Introducing Mr Yanga Giyose- Attorney….. 2

20 Questions with

Yanga Giyose- Attorney

Question 1 Welcome! Please introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about you. My name is Yanga Giyose, I am a new father, a husband, lawyer and ManagingDirector of Giyose Sefume Attorneys.

Question 2 How long have you been practicing as a lawyer? So this is now my 8th year practicing as an attorney.

Question 3 What was it that made you decide to pursue law as a career? I loved the formality of the law and how it allowed everyone . even those with the meekest of personalities and the smallest of voices, to be heard. Personally, Ive always figured that through the practice of law, I could have a better understanding of how the world of business works and how relationships between corporations could be built and maintained.

Question 4 So as a child, what was your dream career?

What was your favorite Subject in high school?

Funny enough, when I was younger, my passion was more towards electrical and mechanical engineering.

My favorite subject in high school was without a doubt, history. It gave me an insight into the past and the workings of the world.

I had an unquantifiable amount of interest in everything that used electricity, from led lights to radios and megnatic motors. It horrified my mom when I constantly dissected most of the electric appliances at home. I didn’t really fix much but mostly did a lot of breaking (laughs). So to answer this question, I’d say no, I didn’t think I’d end up in Law at all!

4

Question 5

lessons I learnt regarding history are that, although there are two sides to every story, history belongs to the victors.

Question 8 Which module convinced you that you were on the right career path? I wouldn’t really pin point one module per se, but I did have a few favorites. I liked the law of succession, business enterprises law, labour law and intellectual property. Question 6 When applying for university, was Uj your first choice? To be honest, I knew from the get go that I wanted to head to Johannesburg and start my life in the city of gold. I was excited to be out of the Eastern Cape and to learn new languages as well as experience different cultures. Most importantly, I was keen to be part of the Joburg hustle.

6

Question 7 What attracted you to Johannesburg? Before moving to Joburg, I haden’t really traveled much outside of the Eastern Cape. To me, Johannesburg was the Metropolis, a city with diverstity and abundant potential.

“I was excited to be out of the Eastern Cape and to learn new languages as well as experience different Cultures. Most importantly, I was keen to be part of the Joburg hustle.”

Question 9 What is your best university memory? (Laughs) There are too many to count! I would say though, that I do miss the sense of community and the relationships built over the years. I also miss the freedom from consequences more than anything.

“There are too many to count!”

Question 12

Question 10

How was the experience when you had two other partners in your first law firm?

When did you decide that you wanted to be your own boss and run your own law firm?

Having two other partners was honestly great! We could bounce ideas off each other and had far more reach in terns of market access.

. The decision to go off on my own was really informed by my experiences. I wanted complete control over my career in law. I wanted the freedom to pursue the type of law I wanted to, and to claim back the passion I had lost over the years.

Question 11 What would you say were the challenges in starting up your own law firm? The challenges we faced in the beginning were lack of credibility and numbers in clientele. We were literally living from hand to mouth for the first couple of years.

“I wanted complete control over my law career.”

Question 14 What is the most rewarding thing about running your own law firm? The most rewarding thing has been building credibility with those clients who gave us an opportunity. Receiving text messages of gratitude from our clients is extremely gratifying. It reminds us that we are impacting lives in a positive manner.

Question 13 How is the experience of currently working with one partner? The experience now isn’t too different to my initial experience, when I had two other partners. The positive factor in my current partnership is that- although our day to day management differs, we still have the flexibility to find common ground. We have a greater understanding of what we need to do in order to evolve and grow.

9

Question 15 What kind of legal services does you firm provide? We provide corporate and commercial law services. Mostly focusing on the built environment, fund management, employment, and sports and entertainment law space.

10

Question 16 What is the most stressful part about dealing with clients? I’d say trust is usually the major challenge. New clients are overtly cautious when dealing with us for the first time. Establishing a relationship becomes a process because clients aren’t familiar with us yet.

Ques tio n 17 What was the funniest moment you’ve had while in court? The funniest moment has to be when I visited the Kempton Park Magistrates Court to take on a client’s case. After winning the trial, my client ran after my opponent screaming “fire! Fire! You will not succeed.” That was funny! (Laughs).

Question 18 Is there a victory case that meant so much to you, that you just had to celebrate? Yes. I once had a complex commercial case in the local magistrates court. My opponent approached me to cancel the court session but when I told him my strategy in continuing, he under estimated me! Needless to say, I went hard in that courtroom and we ended up winning the case. Unfortunately I couldn’t celebrate that victory because it was my father’s funderal that weekend.

Question 19 What advice would you give an up and coming lawyer with a desire to start their own independent firm? My advice to prospective business owners, not only lawyers, is to do the research first. Learn as much as you can about what’s required from you. Be prepared for the challenges that lie ahead. They will test you but always be firm in your purpose and dedicated to your craft.

Question 20 Thank you so much for pulling though and having a chat with us Mr G. We appreciate it. Please provide any websites or social media pages where one can find your company. Here is the link to our Website: http://www.giyosesefume.co.z a/ My work email address: Yanga@giyosesefume.co.za
