With all that is happening in the world, we want to continue to bring positive content that highlights individual`s inspiring stories. We are all unique as human beings and that is our greatest asset. Our magazine is on its fifth issue and we still feel as fortunate as ever by being able to tell people`s unique journeys towards greatness. 20 Questions with Owen Lentz-

Question 1 Please introduce yourself Tell us a little bit about you. Hi, my name is Owen Lentz And I live in Bethesda just outside of Washington DC, USA. I have been living in the US for 17 years and I`m married to my wife Erin. We have two daughters, Raegan and Piper. My wife and I are art teachers And we have been running our own family business of art schools for 17 years now. I am also involved with rugby coaching at a local club, the Potomac Exiles.

Question 2 At what age did you Start playing rugby? I started playing tackle Rugby at 8years old At Queen`s College Boys Primary School.

Question 3 When did you realize that You had talent for the sport? I think I realized when I was in matric that rugby Could be a career. My Border U/19 coach had such an impact on me that year. Rugby also `runs` through my veins as my cousin De La Rey Du Preez is a Springbok. Both my uncles played for Border Rugby and they also played in the front row too (laughs).


Question 4 What is your best primary school rugby memory? My best primary school rugby Memory would definitely be my U/9 rugby season. Were unbeaten That year with no points scored against us. We scored 256 points in 13 Games while conceding 0 points. We played against all the big schools too which makes this memory pretty special.

Question 5 Let`s talk high school rugby. In which grade did you start playing first team for your school? I started playing first team rugby for My school when I was in grade 11 at the Age of 17.

Question 6 What is your best high school rugby memory? Jeez that’s a tough one. There’s so many! One that I can think of is my U/15A year when we played against Grey Bloem. We played an amazing game but unfortunately, we ended up losing to them. On that same day, the U/15B team had an injury and I had to go on as a replacement. We won that game, and what made it so special was that my best mate was captian of that team. Also, beating Grey Bloem was a big deal back then because they were always so tough to beat.

Having played for Queen’s, I am sure you had rival schools. which other boys’ school was your worst rival?

When did you get your first selection at provincial level while at school?

This is also a tough one(laughs). The school that I wanted to beat the most was Selborne College because they always had such a good team. But, the school that I would call my worst rival was Dale College.

My first provincial selection was when I got selected to play for the Border U/19 team, at the Craven Week tournament, in 1998.

“We won that game, and what made it so special was that my best mate was captain of that team.”


Question 9 Apart from excelling on the rugby Pitch, which other sports were you Good at during your school days? My other sports were primarily waterpolo and swimming. I really enjoyed waterpolo! I did athletics too with events such as shotput, discuss and ran the 400m. I wouldn`t consider my self a star in athletics but I was pretty Competitive. In waterpolo I received my provincial colors for Border U/18 B.

Question 10 Let’s talk about your SA U/21 days. How was the experience of being selected to represent your country at that level? Being selected to represent South Africa at U/21 level was a huge honor. The world cup was held in Australia. Getting to play alongside guys like Joe Van Niekerk, Adrian Jacobs and Jean De Villiers was incredible. Coming from a smaller union(Eastern Province) made it more special. Having a guy like Josh Fowles, whom I played against since U/9 rugby was also pretty cool.

Question 11 Was your move to the USA A short or long term plan? My move to the US was neither short nor long term. It was sort Of an open ended plan.

Question 12 How did you feel when you debuted fort the USA rugby team? I was very excited when I made my debut for the eagles!

“I’d say my toughest opponent at interational level was Mark Regan.”

How was the experience of playing against the the Boks at the 2007 world Cup? You know, they say time flies when you’re having fun. That’s the way I could describe that game. It was a blur to be honest as the game was quick! It was fun though. There were a few guys from our SA U/21 squad, so we enjoyed the occasion, ‘going’ at each other.

Question 14 At international level, Who was your toughest Opponent that you faced? I’d say my toughest opponent at international level was Mark Regan, England hooker. I played against him at the ‘07 world cup.


Question 15 What is your best memory from that world cup in 2007? Zee Ngwenya’s run around Bryan Habana to score the try of the tournament is right up there. That as a memoriable moment to to witness.

Question 16 Are you hoping to coach at MLR Level anytime soon? Not yet as I still want to coach at a lower level. It would be good to get involved, but first I need to improve more as a coach.

Ques tio n 17 Away from rugby, what are your hobbies? My hobbies are crossfit, walking my dogs and stand-up paddle boarding.

Question 18 How has the pandemic affected how you guys operate your business? The pandemic affected us badly just like anyone else. We had to close down for the lock down period. We had to adjust quickly so we lauched our virtual and online classes. We also had virtual summer camps and online birthday parties whereby we would also send kits to our students as gifts.

Question 19 Do you and your wife have any Expansion plans for the art School? Maybe across the Country? For now we don’t have any expansion plans, especially with the uncertainty around person-person classes. It wouldn’t be worth it. But hey you never know what the future holds. So we’ll see.

Esports -The future looks too bright! The last two decades has been enormous for esports as it has soared sky high to become a billion dollar industry. Esports athletes have become celebrities and arenas continue to fill up as much as Madison square Garden. During this pandemic, esports has had a major opportunity to seize The online gaming market and make it its own.

The game has grown to the extent that countries around the world are investing in developing and nurturing young talent. The objective is to have these guys/girls represent their home nation in the future. Educational institutions have begun offering scholarships to gamers with potential. It really is an exciting time for the online gaming world.

FIBA basketball hosted its first esports tournament and the numbers it did, were out of this world. Formula 1 announced its first esports race coming soon. More and more major sports are realizing the potential revenue that esports could bring. We can’t predict the future, but as it stands, the world is going digital and the sports industry is cashing in on this wave.

2. Virtual reality Virtual reality has really exploded onto the scene with major tech companies such as Samsung, Google and Oculus to mention a few, leading the charge. The best trait about this tech advancement is that it doesn’t require a lot of speacialized knowledge. To work in VR, one needs basic programming skills. VR has gained most of its momentum in the gaming world.
