The Flooded Future This is a hypothetical thesis, based on scientifically proven data and research. The thesis aims to speculate how life in the warehouse district would be like post-apocalyptic, and how the people of Hamburg could potentially reap benefits from the negatively-deemed rising of water levels beyond the ground planes. A civilian colony, which accommodates the five aspects of live, work, commune, govern and support within a block, is the study vehicle of this project, as a testament to future human living after the rise of water levels beyond existing ground levels.

With global warming and various apocalyptic scenarios being heatedly discussed over the recent years, I am particularly interested in what the definition of life is post-apocalypse. One of the most prominent (and scientifically proven) scenarios is the rise of water levels and flooding due to global warming and glacier melting. This is particularly alarming since most cities develop near water bodies, and two-thirds of the world population today (circa 2013) resides in cities. How do the cities react and respond to positively reap benefits out of this supposedly imminent catastrophe, if you like?

The city centre and HafenCity have developed flood protection methods in terms of dikes and raised floor levels. The warehouse district, or locally known as Speicherstadt, in contrast, is left at its historic level without any sorts of protection. Eventually, as the water level gradually rises over the years, the entire ground floor of Speicherstadt will be submerged, thus rendering Hamburg city centre is prone to flooding, due to its function on that level irrelevant. its location along River Elbe, which tide fluctuations are heavily depended on the conditions of How do the warehouses in Speicherstadt rethe North Sea. Due to global warming and sea spond and benefit from the unavoidable, and expansion, it is predicted that the water levels in spring back to life, just as how Hamburg as a Hamburg will increase by 1.8 to 2m by the end of whole did on a few occasions of catastrophe the century (potentially could drastically increase such as the big fire of 1842, the bombing of due to accelerated global warming over time). WWII, and the big flood of 1976?

The speculated rising of water level in Hamburg draws benefit of hydroelectricity from the flooded basements to the superstructures, creating a network of elevated living post-apocalyptic. Lives thrive, towers rise.

The Civilians’ Colony will be introduced in the middle of the district as a catalyst, and as a testament to future human living when water levels rise beyond the existing ground levels. The tower block is a speculated outcome of how human lifestyle evolves and adapts over the flooded years.

The working spaces in the Working Obelisk are directed to north to receive quality north daylighting for optimum efficiency. 5

The Civilians’ Warren plans are arranged in such a way that enable all rooms to be exposed to the exterior, thus benefitting from both south sunlight and north daylight.

As with the Civilians’ Archives, the dark room of the Cerebral Bay is located interstitially because it requires less daylighting.

6

2 The void in the Civilian Colony is primarily

directed to the south, with huge exposure to the north as well, ensuring the spaces within are sufficiently lit naturally. 3 Because of its precious archive materials,

the Civilians’ Archives is located interstitially within the block facing east, thus only allowing indirect daylighting into the space.

The produce trays in the Cultivation Depot are oriented towards south to receive south sunlighting for maximum yield in produce.

LIVE WORK COMMUNE GOVERN SUPPORT

Post apocalypse, humans will not have the luxury to spread out programmes across the city as they used to, and have to create cities within blocks instead. Elevated streets that will become the primary mode of travelling between buildings, will also become part of the buildings. As opposed to a majority of existing streets at the present as a series of outdoor rooms, the elevated streets are rather, carved-out rooms in internal worlds, with an occasional breath of exterior presence when they bridge between buildings.

2013

A post-apocalyptic city starts from a blank canvas. So is the definition of views and perspectives. A hybrid is born.

The Nirvana of Learning Central Station brings huge quantities of workers and tourists across the Clyde. Exits burst from Argyll Street and Union Street but it is the main entrance at Gordon Street through Robert Rowan Anderson’s Central Hotel that is the front door to the city. Office workers and shoppers turn either direction in thick streams. Gordon Street will be the location for the Central School of English Language and Literacy. How is Gordon Street to be considered a place? What sort of ‘agreement’ is needed? What can the provision of a new school building ‘teach’ Gordon Street? If Central Station is the space of assembly and the city shops and offices are the classrooms, what is the potential of the project sites between the two?

Architecture with a Social Impact A Malaysian study showed the percentage of population in urban areas has increased from 24.5% in 1957 to 50.8% in 1990. We can expect the proportion of the aged population to have escalated parallelly as well. The aged population has its own unique problems and will generate new demands in health and social services, and a new thinking for sustainable development. The design studio extends the exploration of architectural position in proposing strategy to resolve a unique social issue of elderly, within an urban community-themed ‘architecture with a social impact’. The project commences with a group proposal of a masterplan/model/programme that addresses the needs of the required user group, as well as providing spaces that invite interaction with the surrounding community. Subsequently, individual detailed design of a selected portion of the masterplan is produced.

The urban model for aging mainly dominates the organic site, and the young on the grid, with both slowly merging pass each other, creating a concoction of communal and intergenerational spaces. With global warming on a rise, planning without sustainable approach in mind is intolerable. The wetland at the upper end acts as the major green lung of the area, as well as a water filter to the river, which acts as a communal and commercial belt. The solar farm at the lower end turns an otherwise negative area into a positive and profitable one, and enables the area to be selfsustaining in a long run. The challenge of this masterplan is to tackle the interaction between city and nature. When designing from city towards nature, we no longer need to impose a rigid grid-like structure to create an urban model. It is intended to simulate the gridlike pattern of the neighbouring sites, which gradually evolve into a more organic organization, so as to provide a smooth transition between city and nature. The theory takes place in section as well, where building heights nearer to the city tend to be more static and more dynamic as approach nature.

The community centre is designed in such a manner that enables the elderly to gain bearings when they are in the facility, hence the different building heights and facade treatments. The footprints are linked by a family of louvres and sloped roofs, and a series of brick cores, which further emphasizes the loftiness of the spaces. The design also allows for seamless connection between inside and outside, with an alfresco relationship between the building footprints and the covered walkways.

Structural System Study The project sees a happy collaboration with Mr. Samuel Chan Jenn-Au, in which we are required to identify and describe the structural systems used in KL Sentral, Malaysia. designed by the late Kisho Kurokawa. The analysis is translated into a scaled model to understand the materiality, load distribution, function and joint details of each structural system.

The Lair Not having experience in dealing with clients before, this brief calls for a design exercise which briefly exposes the students to the real working world. Understanding the characteristics of the client is crucial in delivering effective design executions. In this case, the client is a Komodo dragon, set in a designated plot in Taiping Zoo, Malaysia. Inspired by the ferociousness and lethality the komodo dragons exude, The Lair offers increasing fear with the decrease in altitude, to a subsequent climax which sees the visitors being surrounded by the lizards, as ‘prey’.

The Grafted Wall The design intention is to create a daydreaming space strongly engaged to the wall. Cut-out panels are used to create void between the two walls, which is specific to the user’s anthropometry, so as to contrast the boxy look on the exterior. Slidable panels are used to camourflage the space when not in use and stand out when in use. A gradual change of opacity in materials creates an airier ambience in space in accordance to manipulation of light and shadow.

An Event to Impress The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) visits The Mackintosh School of Architecture once in every five years to monitor its quality excellence. This time around, four postgraduate students were chosen to organize an exhibition which aimed to showcase a more extra-curricular side of the school. The exhibition involved intensive planning, discussion, collaboration and out-sourcing. Effective teamwork was the key element that contributed to the success of the exhibition. Despite several hiccups in the process, I thoroughly enjoyed setting up the gallery. One of my fifth year renderings was also featured in the exhibition, which made the experience even more memorable!
