X -PLORATION & X-PERIMENT
X-PERIENCE & X-CITEMENT
X X-TENSION OF THE CITY
The new SMU-X building will be designed to reflect the vision and ethos of SMU-X. It will form a distinctive landmark in response to its prominent location in the city. Envisioned to be open, porous and welcoming, the SMU-X facility will foster community and collegiality. The building will reflect its role as a Campus Connector, with strategic physical links to neighbouring SMU Buildings (e.g. School of Law and School of Accountancy), and meaningful connections to the urban fabric of the City. Targeted to be the forefront of learning and teaching facility, its architecture also aims to encapsulate the ‘experimental spirit’ of the place.
The SMU-X Vision X-PLORATION & X-PERIMENT To support a new teaching/learning methodology, which is integral to the SMU experience, focused on collaborative and hands-on learning
X-PERIENCE & X-CITEMENT To create a vibrant 24/7 student hub, in the heart of SMU campus core
X-TENSION OF THE CITY To strengthen SMU’s character as a city campus, one which is intricately connected to the city fabric

X-tension of the City The new SMU-X facility is imagined to be a distinctive landmark with a strong civic presence, embracing the greenery at Fort Canning Park and Campus Green while retaining the key essence of SMU being a city campus. With a 5-minute walking radius between SMU-X and the other SMU facilities in the vicinity, SMU-X is set to be the new campus hub for SMU, strengthening its synergistic relationships and programmatic links with the respective campuses, as well as reinforcing the campus core.

Designed to merge with the vegetation and pavement of Stamford Green and Campus Boulevard respectively, the North Plaza sets itself as a social anchor and public frontage to the surrounding public facilities. The lattice sunshading device on A-South 2 interfaces with the Campus Boulevard, with selective learning pods protruding out from the vertical surface, activating the Campus Boulevard, enriching the traversing experience through the walkway.
X-ploration & X-periment
Informality and dynamism of spaces characterize SMU-X - for example, the walls defining the Activity Studio can be conveniently folded away to make space for larger collaborative zone, allowing seamless blending between the two learning boundaries. This ever temporal quality of spaces foster creativity and individuality for users to experiment and personalize learning spaces according to corresponding needs.
from City in Garden to City within Nature We envision the Choa Chu Kang section of the Rail Corridor as a pilot ground for a truly integrated development, combining park and open space planning, landscape design, infrastructure design and housing community planning and design. The result is a creative way to use land, resulting in not only more efficiency but also new and unique living experiences – City with Nature. The existing concrete drain will disappear into the landscape and the barren rail corridor will be transformed into a forest which enriches biodiversity as well as the quality of everyday life of the community. This will be a community that enjoys more green open space, grows up with the forest, marvels the transformation of the landscape with every thunderstorm and has the unique privilege of having the Rail Corridor as their commuting and recreational amenity.

An Oasis by the Waterway The brief calls for a development with 2440 units, on a site with a building height limit of about 18 storeys (AMSL 64m). A key design challenge therefore, is to ensure good sense of scale and intimacy within such a large development as well as to safeguard meaningful open spaces for social interaction and community bonding. As the site is at a strategic location fronting Serangoon Reservoir, there is opportunity to create a unique housing development which capitalises on its privileged position close to the water.
The Market Street, The Social Boulevard and The Jetty Promenade are special social nodes created on site and interlinked to form the main ‘social corridor’, defining the main social pathway within the development. These are seamlessly integrated with the Common Green, the Park Connector and the water edge, to define the social realm for the site.

Four distinctive precincts are created within the site, creating more intimate living clusters which achieves the required yield and density whilst ensuring a good sense of scale and community.
A series of green open spaces are purposefully created and interwoven together to form The Green Tapestry - an integrated green open space over the entire site, providing meaningful settings for a variety of community activities.

SMU UNIVERSITY SQUARE
Columns amongst Trees The University Square, once it is suitably sheltered and provided with the right public furniture, lighting and even sound system, can be a conducive outdoor study or hangout space for students and the public on normal days. It can also be turned into an event space, used by SMU or shared with the City for events such as the annual Lighting Festival. Its location and design also forge a stronger visual relationship with the reflecting pool in front of it, as well as the forecourt of the Singapore Art Museum across the road. It gives this part of the SMU Campus a much stronger relationship with an important historical building, further enhancing the symbiotic relationship of SMU and the City.

Commonwealth View, Tanglin Halt, Singapore
I
walked past this area every single day for 10 months, oblivious of the beauty of Tanglin Halt. It was only until this fine day I paced my footsteps slower that I discovered this hidden gem. An awkward shot too - I had to climb 8 flights of steps, extend my phone out precariously, wait for the right moment for this snap. I was lucky that this Aunty decided to carry a red bag too, which I think complemented the background quite nicely. “Aunty! You dropping all your coins!!! Been doing quite a bit of thinking on the caption itself, and I guess it does bring out the fun and localness of the shot. Haha - this is a fun photo package in short!

happy collaboration with Publicworks, this design explores the selective use of materials to accentuate highlighted corners of the 3 room HDB unit. The renovation work is targeted to complete by mid March 2018, by which Mr. Aries Ong can proudly call this revamped unit his abode.

The key feature sees the continuity of space being effectively enhanced by removing the existing store, extending the living space towards the yard, allowing daylight to flood the space from both ends.
