Sleep Study Eat

My client is a student, the five key spaces chosen are eat, study, sleep and cleanse. Eating area is located nearest to the exit as eating is the first and last thing the client does before heading out.The client daily activities usually revolves around the study and sleep area. Hence, the two spaces are combined.

Colour Scheme

Dinining area is the first space the client goes to. It is important that the space is inviting and warm so that the client can feel safe and relaxed. Yellow use make the client happier and space brighter.

Warm Tone

Perspective of eating area in warm tone It is important the client get a good night sleep so the colours should not contrast each other too much. Blue and neutral colour such as white and grey which has a calming effects and are used.

02: Retail

Brief:

CLAY

In relation to the location of the shop, create a shop that matches the location. With the first floor toilet and the facade of the second floor having to remain the same.

05

Design Intent

Located at buffalo street which is rich in India culture. The shop CLAY sells traditional handmade terracotta pottery and offers pottery making workshop that allows people to learn traditional pottery making. The customers are tourist and locals. The space is open and minimal to allow concentration in pottery making and attention to display potteries.

Shelf Ideation

The first shelf is made up of 3 different cuboids. It is created by stacking. It’s interesting shape makes it a focal point for retail space. The second shelf is created from a rectangle that is placed up and down resembling a wave shape.

Lighting Ideation

Material

Glass used allows the space to be open. Tiles, cement and solid surface is perfect for wet areas and are easy to maintain. The colurs allows the space to feel be pleasanting to the eyes.

Lighting Ambience

In order to make the shop feel welcoming and traditonal, warm white light is used in the space. This allows the customers to feel more at ease and hence spend more time in the shop. To achieve the ambience, general light, accent light and task light is used.

Selected area chosen is the retail area. It is important that the space feel welcoming and traditonal. Warm white light is used to achieve it. General, accent and task light is used in the space. Perspective render of a shelf in the retail space. Spotlight is used to shine on the pottery pieces. This brings attention to the potteries in the retail space.

Client’s requirements: 1. Reception area ( With seatings) 2. 12 pax conference room 3. Pantry / Breakout area 4. Server room of 1.5m x 2m 5. Utility area (2m x 3.5m) 6. 15 Y-workstations or 16 L-workstations Meeting Room

Deliverables: 1. Content page – showing drawing list 2. Furniture layout plan 3. Partition layout plan – showing wall finishes 4. Floor Finishes layout plan 5. Electrical / data / phone layout plan 6. RCP 7. Schedule of Finishes 8. Physical material board on A3 board – for company assigned.

Research: Uber is an open and fast paced company seeking for change and their staff have sense of belonging. It is important that the spaces encourages productivity and open concept. The pantry encourages the meeting and gatherings of people. Work stations should be situated near each other to allow the staff to feel a sense of belonging in a team.

Narrative Analysis

Alice in the Wonderland: Chapter 5 “neck would bend about so easily in any direction, like a serpent....curving it down into a grateful zigzag”

This grateful and bendy movement of the neck shows fluidity.

“Three inches”, “skrinking rapidly”, “shoulders were nowhere to be found....when she looked down, was an immense length of neck”, “gotten back to my right size”, “brought herself down to nine inches”.

From this narrative, repetition and rythmn can be seen from the changes in Alice’s size.

“suddenly came upon an open place”, “I’ve gone back to my right size” and “began nibbling...again and did not venture...near the house till she had brough herself down to nine inches high”.

Openess can be seen in the literal meaning of the open place that Alice stumble upon. It can also be shown in the acceptance and openess towards transition in her size which previously she had trouble accepting.

Ideation

First model

Rythmn: seen from up and down platforms. Repetition: seen from open and enclosed landings.

Fluidity: seen from circular spatial movement. Openess and Enclosure: seen in strips.

Brief:

Contraints:

As a pair, read on Alice In the Wonderland Chapter 5, identity at least 2 words indicated below and create a 9mx9mx9m space.

1. double-volumed (at least 2-storey) 2. contains a void (able to oversee the floor below) 3. a staircase to travel from 1st to 2nd storey (or 3rd storey) 4. intervention must be derived from the narrative provided with specific spatial functions and constraints. 5. Use only the following spatial elements to transform the narrative into tectonic form and space within the boundaries 6. minimum of 2 words is translated in the model

a. Enclosure/Openness b. Solidity/Fluidity c. Exteriority/Interiority d. Tension/Compression e. Orthogonal/Diagonal f. Rectilinear/Curvilinear

g. Horizontality/Verticality

h. Symmetry/ Asymmetry i. Addition/Subtraction j. Balance/Imbalance k. Rhythm l. Emphasis

Second model

Rythmn: seen in increasing height of strips.

Fluidity: seen in circular spatial movement .

Openess and enclosure: seen in the strips and gaps between them.

Final model Openess and enclosure: seen on open space on the second floor (openess) and on the first floor (enclosure).

Fluidity: seen on the pattern on the wall.

Fluidity: seen in circular spatial movement .

Rythmn: seen in increasing height of strips. Openess and enclosure: seen in material used like glass (openess) and wood (enclosure)

Brief: Based on pattern identified in Thailand interiors, create a 3mx3mx9m space with the same pattern seen on ceiling, walls and furniture.

Group Pattern identified:

Requirement: Groups of 4-5 + 1 x Thai student and Individual: 1. must be: - single-storey - consisting of floor, wall, ceiling (on all surfaces) - 1 x iteration with 3 different functions | wall, screen, furniture, ceiling 2. must be derived from the imageries provided with specific spatial functions and constraints. 3. Making the paper model 9m x 9m x 3m(H) @ 1:50 (human scale to be included): Use only modelling techniques to transform the imageries into architectonic form and space within the boundaries: a. Scaling b. Folding c. Sliding d. Stacking e. Weaving 4. Dialectics of Tectonic Space The transformation may address some words, if not most, of the following dialectics/aspects of tectonic space. Individual After the feedback on the group project, I am given a choice to change the design or refine it. I decided to change it.

Pattern identified

The pattern identified is the tiling pattern found on the roof.

Ideation

Sketch model Model 1:

The model is created by folding method. Pattern created by mirroring the roof tiling.

25

Model 1

The model is created by folding method.

Final Model

Design Statement: A space that functions as a pavillion. People can enjoy the scenery around and rest and relax in the space. The model is achieved through folding and derived from the pattern identified on the Thai roof. Rythmn, openness and enclosure, curvilinear are design principles used in the model.

Brand

Shiok is a local dessert shop that sell anything chocolate. Its target audience are locals especially teens. In order to convey that the products sold are good. The local slang shiok is used to show that the chocolate products are good beyond words. Chocolate bars are made to form words to convey that the shop sell chocolate and the bit marks on the chocolate show that the chocolate is so irresistable that it is being eaten.
