AROUND THE INDUSTRY by Kiley McKinna
The Importance Of ‘Vision’
W
elcome to the Limousin365 Annual Herd Sire Edition! As you page through this issue, you’ll find many of the breed’s most relevant herd sires showcased, progressive programs highlighted and several of the breed’s finest spring sales featured in accompaniment with multiple feature stories and industry news. It’s official, the first half of the 2022 bull sale season is firmly in our rearview mirrors and now it’s time to charge into the spring breeding season with optimism and an eye on the future. As I write this column, pondering which direction to head, the most relevant thing that jumps to mind is the spring breeding season. Currently, this very topic is often front-and-center of most conversations I have with breeders across the country. Naturally, the visit is about which bulls to use this spring—what’s worked, what’s new and what’s in demand? With that in mind, and in the spirit of this edition, I’d like to encourage you to truly study your hole card this breeding season. 1. Understand your marketplace and the current cattle industry calls. 2. Be sure to cater to your strengths while working toward improving upon your weaknesses. 3. Be willing to ask questions, poll your customers and follow breeders and industry affiliates. I believe having a firm handle on those three basic concepts and a willingness to ask questions will undoubtedly simplify your breeding decisions, ultimately leading you to the correct breeding solutions and most importantly, lead to sale day success for both yourself and your customers. Now that we’ve uber-simplified your breeding decisionmaking process and established a true basis jump point, let’s take a deeper dive into the process and open the discussion up. I preface the next segment of this column with one of my favorite sayings as it relates to the cattle business, “We’re not building rockets, so let’s not make this rocket science.” With that said, the deeper dive I’d like to take regarding breeding solutions is challenging. In essence,
6
every breeder needs to gain a firmer understanding of the technologies, tools and utilization of research information at our disposal. It may seem elementary at this juncture of our breed’s progression, but the simple usage of measurable performance records, ultrasound data, genomically-enhanced expected progeny differences and feed efficiency testing should be considered when making breeding decisions beyond “the good ol’ eyeball test.” The reason for being that suggestive encompasses a myriad of factors, but most importantly, my personal understanding of the current competitiveness not only within the breed but, also the ‘breed to breed’ market share arm wrestle. With that in mind, that leads me into my next piece beyond technologies and tools—using research and the importance of ‘Vision’. If you’re not familiar with the new North American Limousin Foundation research project initiative, I strongly encourage you to engage and follow along. To paraphrase a recent conversation with our NALF Executive Director Mark Anderson, “NALF is moving along on its research project this Spring with the help of two commercial cow-calf ranches in Montana. They will be breeding three different contemporary groups of sires bred to commercial cows to document differences in feed performance to three different harvest dates along with capturing harvest data differences through third party research at South Dakota State University in the Fall of 2023. Documenting these differences should reveal differences that have a real economic impact to the commercial cattle industry and help underscore our breed’s position within the marketplace. In addition to identifying promotable strengths and area’s of needed improvement.” That said, staying current with not only breed research, but industry research, can be of assistance when contriving your next generation mating solutions. In closing, I sincerely hope you enjoy our Herd Sire Edition issue. It is both a benefit to your respective program and a promotional piece the Limousin breed can be proud of. A big thank you to all of the advertisers, readership and those that continue to support and offer feedback as it relates to your magazine, Limousin365. God bless and I look forward to seeing you down the sale trail this spring. We are all in it together and Limousin proud.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE by Bruce Lawrence
I
would like to start off by thanking my fellow board members and the NALF membership for the opportunity to serve as your 2022 NALF President. NALF started the new year off with one of the largest shows in recent times at the 2022 Cattlemen’s Congress. Paula and I also traveled to NWSS in Denver after the OKC event and enjoyed the opportunity to visit with exhibitors. I would like to also thank the NALF membership for their support in a very successful Genetics On Ice benefit Auction to benefit the North American Limousin Junior Association (NALJA) at the 2022 Cattlemen’s Congress. While we are talking NALJA, the state of Texas is making preparations to host the Texas Two-Step, the 2022 National Junior Limousin Show & Congress in Amarillo, Texas, on June 25 through July 1. I would like to take this opportunity to invite each and every one of you to Amarillo to be a part of this great event. The NALF board and staff are very excited about the NALF Research project that we have been planning the last 15 months. If all goes as planned, NALF will A.I. approximately 450 black, commercial Angus cows on two different ranches in Northwest Montana. We will be working with South Dakota State University to purchase and feed the resulting progeny from this A.I. project. Our staff will work with the South Dakota State University staff in documenting feed conversion and carcass data, along with other information to document the value of using Limousin genetics. If you are interested in making a tax-free donation to the NALF Research Fund (NALRF), please visit NALF.org for more information or contact Mark Anderson at the NALF office. We hope to document the benefits of using Limousin genetics with this program. NALF has been in operation for more than 50 years; this is the very first time third-party research will be conducted that is under the association umbrella. The current board is focused on the targeted investment we are making to promote our cattle through private donations in addition to NALF re-investing some of the profits of the past two years of operations. Hopefully calving season has been a success this Spring for all of our membership. High input cost with feed, fuel prices and additional production expense items continues to make us operate in a challenging environment. Most of us directly involved in the production of Limousin seedstock realize how we have improved the genetics we offer to the commercial cattle industry. It is the intent of
10
our NALF board to promote those advantages to commercial cattle operations throughout the country with our expanded commercial advertising budget. As I am writing this letter, Spring bull sale season is off to an excellent start. I would encourage everyone to attend as many sales as possible to visit with your fellow Limousin breeders and support these breeders with your attendance. In closing, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our staff on a very successful 2021, both productively and financially. I can’t thank them enough for all they do for the association and its members!

NALF Report: April 2022
B
ull sale season is off to a successful start in 2022 at the time of this writing. Early sales through February and early March have been impressive not only in the quality of the genetics offered but also increased sale averages over the previous year. This is happening due to the dedicated effort breeders have made in supplying genetics that are very useful in the commercial market in combination with breeders obtaining additional customers

The National Junior Limousin Show & Congress is not made possible without wonderful sponsors like you! The 2022 Show Planning NJLSC Committee is looking for Award Sponsorships for the 2022 National Junior Limousin Show & Congress in Amarillo, Texas, June 25 - July 1.

individually. The effort it takes to reach out to more commercial producers on an individual basis works, especially when the genetics provided through the purchase has immediate positive economic impact on their bottom lines. Like it or not, today’s environment is an accelerated inflationary one that coincides with reduced cowherd numbers across the U.S. Even though we can expect to see increased prices for cattle, production costs have increased rapidly as well. Utilizing superior genetics is the only way to offset this, once fixed production costs have been lowered. Higher feed prices will predominate in the country given concerns with higher fertilizer prices, fuel, weather volatility and global disruptions. Cattle that have superior feed efficiency all while adding more production pounds that can additionally capture quality and yield grade premiums will be in demand now more than ever. As sustainability becomes more of a focus in today’s agriculture enterprises, Limousin has a good story to tell given its superior feed conversion rates. All cow/calf operations have a good story to tell here. Rotational grazing that promotes superior pasture growth and utilization of forage is unique to this industry. Plants absorb carbon from methane production in the recycling of methane. Most farming enterprises engaged in crop production do this as well with carbon utilization as methane breaks down. Few industries can claim this in their production practices. Running cattle that have superior feed conversion will be a strong asset moving forward, not only in reduced feed cost and the production of efficient pounds, but also from a sustainability aspect as well. The Limousin breed has always been known for superior feed efficiency but documenting that on current genetics is highly valuable moving forward. The importance of turning in performance data on birth weight, weaning weight and yearling weight is critical. More NALF members are also taking it a step further and are now capturing intake and feed conversion data on their sires and progeny of those sires to further document performance data. continued on page 14

Blessed with 42 Years of Success
continued from page 12 The superior cattle have extremely high value to all sectors of the industry. We all look for cows that lower maintenance cost in the cow/calf sector, but progeny out of those cattle that move into the production chain at the grass, stocker and feedyard levels have real economic advantages as superior conversion rates have a major advantage in terms of reduced production cost. Since 65-70% of the cost of beef production is in feed cost, we need to continue to promote the advantages the Limousin breed has in this trait. Eventually we will have an additional EPD to reflect dry matter intake, this can be combined with average daily gain data to find cattle that possess superior feed conversion capability. If you haven’t been able to capture intake data, it makes it even more critical to turn in your new progeny’s existing weight trait data to capture growth differences on your cattle. Ultrasound data is critical as well. If you are not able to capture harvest or actual carcass data, ultrasound data to record backfat, marbling and ribeye differences are still very effective and allow you to sort superior cattle for carcass traits and increased accuracy. Folks that have had successful bull sales the past few years are doing this as their customer base is increasingly demanding all the performance data and genomics they can get on bull purchases. As they say in the country, nothing is more expensive than buying a cheap bull that does not have superior performance in all aspects and is backed up by data. Tie in the genomics to increase accuracy on purchase value and the commercial buyer has more data than ever before to evaluate potential purchases. Make sure you are doing your best to supply that to your existing customers; it will help attract new customers as well. NALF is also moving along on its research project as well this Spring. With the help of two commercial cow calf ranches in Montana, we will be breeding three different contemporary groups of sires to commercial cows to document differences in feed performance to three different harvest dates along with capturing harvest data differences through third party research at South Dakota State University in the Fall of 2023. Documenting these differences should reveal differences that have real economic impact to the commercial cattle industry. We will keep you updated as we move forward with this project the NALF board has devoted much time and effort to. We appreciate your efforts and support as members of the association as we all work together to move the breed forward in a positive direction!

MEMBER AND INDUSTRY NEWS BRIEFS A.I. Sire and Donor Dam Information Reminder
All A.I. sires and donor dams born in 2015 or later are required to have a GGP-HD genomic profile on file in addition to parent verification for sires and sire verification for donor dams. Animals born before 2015 do not require the genomic profile but do require either parent or sire verification through SNP DNA typing. They must also be tested for any genetic condition (AM, NH, Proto, etc.) that they are a potential carrier for. A.I. sire permits are recommended on any new A.I. sire and can be added by contacting either Alison at Alison@NALF.org or Tammy at Tammy@NALF.org or at 303-220-1693.
Ultrasound Data and Yearling Weights
Members should be aware that yearling weights taken at the time of carcass ultrasound data collection are not automatically loaded into DigitalBeef. If a breeder wants the ultrasound weights to be used for yearling data, please notify Stephanie at Steph@NALF.org. Ultrasound barnsheets may be generated and printed from the Member Site on the NALF-DigitalBeef platform. There are instructions for printing barnsheets on the Member Site help page at www.NALF.org.

Riding Shotgun Who’s Leading Your Herd As we travel the highways and by-ways of the Limousin family and breed, we often cuss and discuss the cattle business, sports, politics, great cheeseburgers and most of the time, the promotion and marketing of Limousin cattle. Through “Riding Shotgun” we invite you to join us in the righthand seat, so that we can let you in on what we find to be our marketing pet peeves, shortcuts and some of the favorite habits of top-flight professional producers. Grab a cup of coffee and take the ‘shotgun seat’—we are pleased to have you riding along.
A
s the days get longer and catalogs start showing up online and in the mailbox, it’s time to consider the question that should be
Registered Limousin Bulls FOR SALE PRIVATE TREATY
Solid 18-month-old registered purebreds from a dedicated fall calving herd. Economically priced and ready to work. Honest cattle from an honest program, backed by customer service.
on your mind everyday and all the time—do I need a new herd bull? As I listen to my favorite sports shows, they talk about new coaches, new quarterbacks and who is leading the program. I think your seedstock business is much like a team—it needs to be a coordinated effort, with lots of talent to get you across the finish line. I think if you are a progressive seedstock operation you also need to evaluate your current options and think about your program for the future. Years ago, a very successful and insightful breeder, when asked when he starts looking for his next herd bull, gave an answer I think is telling. “I start looking for my next herd bull the minute my current one goes out with his first cows.” He was always on the lookout and had found that it might take a while and that he needed to always be ready to find not only a replacement, but also a compliment to the current head of the program. I also think that even if you think you are the greatest AI technician in America, you need a herd bull that can keep your cows bred in a timely fashion and on that year when you just don’t have your best stuff in the AI chute. Mother Nature made the best heat detector and breeding machine in the world—she put four legs on him and sent him off to get the job done. Don’t short yourself when it comes to a clean-up bull. I think you will find that down the road a lot of your replacement females will come out of the clean-up bull, so make sure he can handle the load if the first team goes down. Product Driven by Randy Ratliff
I
n the next 2-3 years I believe we are going to see the best things to ever happen in the cattle industry! We currently have fewer cows in the country, and the seedstock breeders that keep replacements back and increase their inventory will receive very big dividends. Feed and moisture will be keys to the future, but program success will come down to the quality of the product and the service given to the customers. There is a tremendous amount of money to be made in the seedstock business! After a strong run during these first few months of bull and female sales in 2022, it is evident we have a high demand for our product, but that is only if they check all the boxes. In analyzing our business models, whether it be Fullblood, Purebred or Lim-Flex, if the conformation fits well with a strong EPD profile from a reputable source then the sky is the limit. It has become more and more evident that the programs receiving the most premium for their product are those that have serviced their customers well, more than just the night before the sale. A text, phone call, email, handwritten note and/or an appreciation gift is vital to sustaining business relationships. Commercial
cattlemen have many options when it comes to what breed of bulls they use. They may love the Limousin product now, but if there isn’t exceptional customer service to go with it there is always a chance of losing future business. Though these ideas may seem elementary and mundane, we must keep the little details in mind at all times. One thing I know for certain is the Limousin and Lim-Flex products are as good as any breed of cattle in the country. We have structure and soundness like no other breed, desirable looks and conformation, and most importantly, our breeders are some of the finest folks in the industry. But with growth and the future of the breed in mind, we must continue providing unique and special customer service to ensure that next level experience. I challenge us all to be better, do better and continue to treat everyone just like we would want to be treated. Best Regards, Randall O. Ratliff Ratliff & Co.

You Can Have Your And Eat It, Too
With rising feed costs and an increased focus on sustainability within the beef industry, feed efficiency is more than a buzzword, it’s rapidly becoming a battle cry in an industry challenged to do more, with less. By incorporating today’s Limousin and Lim-Flex genetics into your crossbreeding program, you can capitalize on the breed’s inherent feed efficiency advantage while still banking the premiums paid for high quality, high yielding carcasses. That’s two ways to profit, instead of one!
/// “Feed accounts for somewhere between two-thirds and three-fourths of the input costs of the feeding phase. So, feed intake and the utilization of those feed resources really gets at the heart of profitability in our business.” Dr. Bob Weaber, Director of Eastern Kansas Research and Extension Centers
“Using a Continental breed such as Limousin or Lim-Flex on a British-based cow herd gives you the best of both worlds – the maximum combination of a balance between gain, feed efficiency and carcass quality.” Dr. Kee Jim, CEO of Feedlot Health Management Services

GENOMIC TESTING ENTERS THE SHOW RING
T
he North American Limousin Foundation (NALF) is constantly looking for ways to improve the Limousin breed, and often uses the National Junior Limousin Show & Congress (NJLSC) as a way to move big ideas and improvements forward. Junior national shows are a unique show each summer for cattle breeds - exhibitors have the opportunity to showcase their cattle, knowledge and professionalism while breeders flaunt their best genetics and get a close-up look at the competition from across the country. Everything about the week, from competitions to livestock shows, help improve breeds to be their very best in a one-week showcase. For the Limousin breed, this week also represents a time filled with fun, reuniting with long-distance friends and the opportunity to better a breed known for its muscling, maternal ability, feed efficiency and profit-added value. In 2022, the NJLSC is being held in Amarillo, Texas at the TriState Fairgrounds June 25 to July 1. The NALF and North American Junior Limousin Association (NALJA) boards are excited to offer a brand-new show with goals to increase education and improve the breed - the Phenotype/Genotype (P&G) Show. “We are excited to present the Phenotype/Genotype Show,” said Mallory Blunier, NALF Director of Media and Activities. “This will be a separate blow-and-go show at Junior Nationals this summer where the judge will look not just at the cattle phenotypically, but also at their EPDs.” The P&G Show will have one judge who ranks the animals before the show, based solely on their expected progeny differences (EPDs). Then, will judge the cattle classes during the show based on phenotype, or physical appearance. Once the two shows have been judged, scores from each will be combined 50/50 to determine overall class rankings and champions. “So, even if an animal is first in class in the phenotype portion, the final placing could be completely different based on the genotype ranking,” said Blunier. “The final placings will be determined on that combined score from genotype and phenotype.” The P&G Show will be a separate show to enter for this year’s Junior Nationals with champion banners and buckles and class winner prizes offered for the show. The difference in entering this show is that all cattle must be genomically tested to enter. “Animals that are not genomically tested will not be allowed to show,” said Blunier. “DNA could take up to 6-8 weeks to process
32
and we recommend sending DNA in as soon as possible. While the testing normally costs over $57 per head, NALF is covering the cost of genomic testing for cattle entered so there is no additional cost to the exhibitor.” A large portion of cattle shows today focus solely on the phenotype of cattle, or more specifically how the genotype of an animal makes itself known through observable, physical traits. Phenotypes can include hair color, presence or absence of horns and any general overall appearance. The genotype of cattle are shown not by physical appearance, but through EPDs, which have helped improve the cattle industry for nearly four decades. For this show, the judge is not only looking at EPDs, but genomically-enhanced EPDs. For cattle testing, genomics identify each animal’s EPD accuracy utilizing marker subsets that are identified for each trait. Genomics give producers early insight to an animal’s quality because of the progeny equivalents generated by genomic testing. The P&G Show judge will receive a list of classes that include entry numbers, birthdate and EPDs/$Values (CED, BW, WW, YW, MK, TM, CEM, SC, ST, DOC, YG, CW, REA, MB and FT) along with percentile breakdown. Blunier said the show will provide a great educational opportunity to the breed, as well as improve overall breed statistics by adding more genomically tested cattle to the herd book. “We’re really hitting it as an educational opportunity to get more information out to the juniors that revolve around EPDs,” said Blunier. “Limousin is not just bringing the heat in the show cattle industry, but we are also creating waves in the feedyards and seedstock operations and that is why we feel this is a good opportunity for juniors to learn how EPDs work.” The NALF and NALJA boards are excited to offer the P&G Show this summer and hope that all who make the trip to Amarillo will enter in the show. “We encourage all who are not participating in this event to come watch and play along too,” said Blunier. “We will have activities for participants to test their skills and see how they rank the animals compared to the judge.” Entries for Junior Nationals will open mid-spring and are due May 15. Recording Greatness by Megan Silveira
Excellence can be found in every element of Fuchs Limousin.
34
A
stack of old papers rests on a desk. The papers are weathered with age and hold smudged fingerprints on the corners from how often they’ve been handled, yet the information on each sheet is still pristine and accurate. Gary Fuchs fondly recalls the record keeping practices of his grandfather who started Fuchs Limousin in 1970. The herd of cattle has changed with time, but Fuchs said his grandfather was devoted to the upkeep of the operation.
• APRIL 2022
“Limousin cattle are easy to maintain in our environment,” Gary said. “They’re easy to look at. They’ve got the right balance of muscle to them. The cows are easy keepers in the pasture.”
“My grandfather was a tedious record keeper,” he explained, remembering how each cow’s information was printed on their own piece of paper. “He was meticulous. He always did the best to care for the animals.” Fuchs and his grandfather spent hours together on their land in Cameron, Texas — land the Fuchs family has called home since 1937. Their bond was “a typical grandfather-grandson relationship,” with an agricultural twist. Fuchs said his grandfather was dedicated to passing on the practices of good stewardship. From ensuring grass was available for grazing
year-round to never overstocking a pasture, Fuchs remembers his grandfather as being dedicated to doing the best he could with their central Texas cattle operation. “You treated things right,” he explains. “From your property to your animals to your customers – everything was treated correctly.” After his grandfather passed away in 1984, Fuchs took over the business and has been working to carry on the legacy ever since. Today, Fuchs Limousin boasts 80 head of registered, breeding-aged cattle and spans about 300 acres. Though Fuchs has been a fan of the Limousin breed since he first walked the pasture alongside his grandfather, he said his appreciation for the livestock has only grown with time. “It’s hard to describe something you grew up with, but for me, [Limousin cattle] are easy to maintain in our environment here,” he explains. “They’re easy to look at. They’ve got the right balance of muscle to them. The cows are easy keepers in the pasture.” The operation currently centers around females, as Fuchs is building herd numbers from his own calf crop. “We’re going to grow up to 30% more cattle here, but I’m pretty focused on raising cattle rather than buying them. I’m kind of stubborn that way,” he adds with a chuckle. “We’ve bought cattle, but I have a certain affinity for the ones we’ve raised.” In addition to raising cattle he’s proud to keep on the property, Fuchs also owns and operates Ideal Poultry Breeding Farm with his two sisters – another family business started by his grandfather. The farm is home to 40,000-50,000 laying hens and hatches upward of five million chicks each year. Fuchs describes the company as a specialty niche business as they raise and sell almost 200 varieties of chickens to feed stores or backyard flock owners. “Just like folks have cattle to enjoy, they have chickens to enjoy also,” he explains. “We fit into that part of the business world as well.” In both the poultry and cattle businesses, Fuchs emphasizes the importance of family. His wife, Susan, helps with both operations and their sons, Stephen and Nathan, help manage the cattle and hatchery. continued on page 36

continued from page 35 Gary Fuchs took over the family business in 1984 and has been carrying on the legacy ever since. Today, Fuchs Limousin boasts 80 head of registered, breeding-aged cattle and spans about 300 acres on property the family has called home since 1937. Fuchs has always valued working alongside family, though he’s found his family ties stretch beyond his own home. It is this sense of shared love for livestock and the people behind the cattle that led Fuchs to serve on the North American Limousin Foundation Board of Directors. Though Fuchs admits he never pictured himself serving on the national level, he was always raised with the philosophy that you serve the organizations you’re a part of. So, when he received a phone call from his peers asking if his name could be added to the 2013 ballot for the NALF board, he said yes. The chance to serve the Limousin breed was one he found himself saying yes to on more than one occasion. Fuchs served two three-year terms in total, a couple of which were spent as treasurer and the last two spent as president. “Probably the best experience I’ve had as a breeder was the chance to serve on the board,” Fuchs said. “I got to meet a lot of people, visit a lot of ranches and attend a lot of sales. It was just a really good experience.”
In addition to giving back to the industry and making new connections, Fuchs said serving on the board was a unique opportunity to learn more about the strengths of Limousin cattle. He has always believed a good animal offers the best of both phenotype and genetics, and during his years as a director allowed him to help further promote this message with breeders. “I always tell people you’ve got to be able to go out in the pasture and like what you’ve got,” Fuchs said, “but I’m very aware of the pedigrees, EPDs and things like that.” continued on page 38

DNA testing and emphasizing genetic progress was something Fuchs promoted while on the NALF board, and are practices he currently implements in his own operation. Practicing DNA testing and emphasizing genetic progress was something Fuchs promoted while on the board, but they are also practices he implements in his own operation. In addition to participating in Limousin programs, every female at Fuchs Limousin has been DNA tested and the operation participates in whole herd reporting. In upcoming years, Fuchs hopes to promote the breed to other local cattlemen within a 50-mile radius of his operation. Fuchs plans to market not only his cattle but their genetic excellence as well. While he said commercial breeders around Cameron do not typically focus on EPDs, he is eager to help them discover the importance of genomics in the herd. As Fuchs works with his family to continue to make these ambitions a reality, he will continue to keep the traditions of his grandfather alive. From the most detailed records, to the care given to livestock and the land where they graze, Fuchs strives to uphold the philosophies born when Fuchs Limousin was first founded. READY TO RUN Cattle prices are headed higher, despite recent geopolitical pressure.
J
by Wes Ishmael
ust when the pandemic was making enough progress to boost hopes, along came Russia’s attack on Ukraine, rocking global commodity markets and supply chains. Spot Kansas City Wheat futures closed at $12.00/bu. to end the first week of March. Spot Corn futures on the CME were at $7.56. Spot West Texas Intermediate Crude Oil futures (CME) rocketed $20/bbl. higher the same week. Feeder Cattle futures declined $9.59/ cwt. over the course of two weeks. Surging grain and oil prices were tied to port closures in Russia and Ukraine, as global markets rationed available supply. Wheat dragged other feed futures higher, which were already escalating for the same geopolitical reason. “The Ukraine-Russia war has been the catalyst for the explosion in wheat prices, however the foundation was set through several events that caused limited exportable global supplies,” explained Aaron Smith, crop marketing specialist at the University of Tennessee (UT), in his early-March weekly market comments. “Ukraine is estimated to contribute 4.3% of global wheat production, 11.6% of global wheat exports and less than 1% of global ending stocks. Russia is estimated to contribute 9.7% of global wheat production, 16.9% of exports, and 3.8% of global stocks. The two countries are responsible for 28.5% of global wheat.” Keep in mind supply chains were still hamstrung by politics and pandemic-disrupted supply chains before the Russian attack. “Every time the cattle market begins to make a push to stronger prices, something unexpected happens that directly impacts cattle prices,” explained Andrew P. Griffith, UT agricultural economist at the University, in his market comments. “This conflict halfway around the world is not expected to overpower the fundamentals
40
that are driving cattle prices higher, but the conflict will certainly increase volatility, which means prices will likely decline in the near term to unexpected levels. However, prices will most likely recover and challenge future contract highs as the initial shock works its way through the market.”
Cattle Prices Poised for Extended Increase
The futures prices Griffith refers to were just beginning to demonstrate coming strength before the Russian war stalled progress. Negotiated cash fed cattle prices finally breeched $140/ cwt. and 5-weight steer calves were commonly commanding more than $200.
CattleFax provided an extraodinarily optimistic cattle price forecast during its Outlook Seminar in February.
With cattle numbers declining, front-end fed cattle marketing approaching pre-covid levels and beef demand continuing strong, CattleFax projected the average fed steer price this year $18 higher year-over-year at $140/cwt. with a range of $130-$155. The organization forecasts the average feeder steer price (800 lbs.) at $172 with a range of $158-$184, and the average calf price (550 lbs.) at $205 with a range of $180-$230. Moreover, CattleFax forecasts utility cows at an average of $75/ cwt. with a range of $65 to $85. Bred cows are expected to bring an average $1,850/head with a range of $1,700 to $2,000 for load lots of quality, running-age cows. The feeder cattle and calf supply will be 675,000 head fewer than last year, totaling 25.5 million head, according to CattleFax. Fed cattle

continued from page 40 slaughter will decline 400,000 head to 25.7 million head. Commercial beef production will contract over the next several years; starting with a 2% decline in 2022. Kevin Good, vice president of industry relations and analysis at CattleFax, pointed out U.S. beef cow inventories fell more than 700,000 head from last year and are nearly 1.6 million less than the cyclical peak. This year, the beef cow herd will be near 30.1 million head.
Drought Will Decide Expansion Opportunity
Specifically, the beef cow inventory on Jan. 1 was 30.125 million head, which was 718,500 head fewer (-2.3%) than the same time last year, according to USDA’s Cattle report. That was the fewest since 2015 and was the largest year-over-year decline since 1996-97, according to David Anderson, Extension livestock economist at Texas A&M University, in a February issue of In the Cattle Markets. He added the report included a significant revision of 314,000 fewer head in the previous year’s beef cow inventory. Although drought contributed to the decline in beef cows, Anderson said calf prices, relative to costs, also forced some culling. Beef heifers held for replacement of 5.611 million head were 191,600 head fewer (-3.3%) than the previous year. “That is the fewest replacement heifers held back since Jan. 1, 2014,” Anderson said. “While fewer replacements would be needed with a smaller cow herd, a reduction this large indicates some expectations of more herd contraction.”
The calculated feeder supply outside of feedlots of 25.537 million head was 676,000 head fewer (-2.6%) than last year. Dairy cows of 9.375 million head were 67,400 head fewer (-0.7%). All cattle and calves of 91.902 million head were 1.888 million head fewer (-2.0%). “The inventory report indicates we are headed toward less beef production and higher prices,” Anderson explained. “A cow herd of this size should also lead to some expectations of calf prices approaching the rarified air of the years following the Texas 20102012 drought. The current drought and its development over the coming months will dictate a lot about the cow herd over this year. But, good beef demand should also pull prices higher on top of available supplies.” As of March 3, nearly 60% of the Continental U.S. was suffering some degree of drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. Specifically, moderate to exceptional drought covered 59.2% of the country compared to 46.6% at the same time last year when drought was already a problem in some regions. La Niña remains firmly in control of the ocean-atmosphere system, and that is unlikely to change this spring, said meteorologist Matt Makens, during the CattleFax Outlook Seminar. Barring any change to the La Niña outlook or sudden warming in the Gulf of Alaska, Makens explained that likely means dryness continues across the Southwest and South with warm temperatures. The Northern Plains and Corn Belt are expected to have wetness farther east this spring and drier conditions for this summer, with temperatures closer to normal versus last year.

With that weather outlook in mind, CattleFax expects planted corn acres this coming season to be 91.8 million, with a trend-line yield of 180 bu./acre. CattleFax expects soybean acres to remain near steady at 87.2 million acres.
Before the latest price surge, USDA expected more moderate feed prices later this year.
“Feed prices during 2022 are likely to be slightly lower than 2021. Corn prices in the first part of 2022 are expected to be above a year ago reflecting a forecast 2021-22 crop year average of $5.45/bu. However, prices later in the year are expected to be below 2021, reflecting a decline in the season-average price to $5.00/bu. for 2022-23,” according to World Agricultural Outlook Board analysts. “Soybean meal prices in the first part of 2022 will reflect a 2021-22 crop year average of $410 per ton and prices in the fourth quarter are expected to reflect a market year forecast of $375 for 2022-23.”
That’s from February’s Livestock and Poultry Outlook presented during this year’s Agricultural Outlook Forum. “Significant drought in 2022 will have more noticeable impacts on cow markets, change the timing of feeder cattle and ultimately feedlot production, and will have more implications for the industry in subsequent years,” according to Derrell Peel, Extension livestock marketing specialist at Oklahoma State University, in February market comments. “There is potential for the drought to push cattle inventories significantly lower than planned and set up a market reaction similar to 2014-15 in the next couple of years.” Peel pointed out the beef cow herd continues to decline from its cyclical peak in 2019. If drought is not a limitation this year, he explained net profit potential will likely determine whether herd liquidation continues and by how much. continued on page 44

continued from page 43 “Higher cattle prices and expectations of continued higher prices may have producers interested in slowing liquidation, holding cattle numbers steady or even expanding,” Peel said. “However, the extent to which higher prices leads to expectations of higher profitability — and a desire to expand the herd — will be tempered by higher feed and other input costs.” As input prices increase along with cattle prices, Peel explained in subsequent market comments that producers must adjust cattle production and marketing to maximize profits. “Economists model this decision mathematically resulting in the rule that profit maximization is the point at which marginal revenues equal marginal costs. This balance occurs when the value of the last unit produced equals the additional cost of producing that last unit,” Peel explained. “Of course, cattle producers don’t use mathematical models to maximize profits but should use marginal thinking to adjust to changing market conditions. Marginal decision making means that production is adjusted at the margin, i.e. with minor modifications and tweaks to production systems rather than major changes.” Peel cautioned there are short-run and long-term considerations and risks to making adjustments. “Care should be taken that short term efforts to manage higher costs should not, for example, jeopardize herd health by cutting vaccination programs or skimping on nutrition and risking decreased future herd productivity,” Peel explained. “Markets are extremely volatile now

Beef Demand Continues Strong
So far, despite higher retail prices, consumer beef demand continues to support cattle price potential. Wholesale beef demand will likely slow in the coming year, but cutout value should hold steady near an average of $280/cwt., Good said. During the CattleFax Outlook Seminar Good explained global protein demand continues to rise, and U.S. beef exports are expected to grow by 5% this year to 3.7 billion lbs., supported in part by tightening global protein supplies. Likewise, CattleFax sees continued domestic consumer beef demand strength this year. Good explained inflation is also driving beef prices to a higher trading range. The USDA All-Fresh Beef Retail Price should average near $7.15/lb. this year, ultimately resulting in more margin in the system. While U.S. median household income increased last year, historically high inflation is affecting low-to-middle income Americans the most, Good says.
International consumer beef demand is extraordinary.
U.S. beef exports shattered previous volume and value records in 2021, surpassing $10 billion for the first time, according to year-end data released by USDA and compiled by the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF). December beef exports totaled 121,429 metric tons (mt), up 1% from a year earlier, while value climbed 33% to $991.8 million — the third largest month on record. Volume in 2021 was up 15% at 1.44 million mt — 7% more than the previous record set in 2018. Export value soared to $10.58 billion, up 38% from 2020 and shattering the previous record (2018) by 27%. “The beef export results are truly remarkable, especially considering the COVID-related obstacles in the global foodservice sector and all the supply-side and logistical challenges faced by the U.S. industry,” says Dan Halstrom, USMEF President. “Obviously, our large Asian markets accounted for much of the growth, but it really takes broad-based global demand to reach these impressive levels. So this success story is not just about Korea, Japan and China – but also a strong performance in Taiwan, excellent growth in Central and South America and a rebound in Mexico and Southeast Asia.” Beef export value per head of fed slaughter equated to a record $407.22 in 2021, up 35% from the previous year. Exports accounted for 15% of total beef production and 12.8% for muscle cuts only, up significantly from the respective 2020 ratios of 13.5% and 11.3%. ucked away in a storybook setting, down a long, private lane in Boonsboro, Maryland, is the multi-generational Thomas and Son Farms—a purebred Limousin and Lim-Flex operation rooted in generations of family history and nestled in the beautiful landscape of Washington County, Maryland. The trio of brothers, Chris, Daniel and Lonnie Thomas, were raised as the sixth generation on this very farm by their parents, Tracy and Brenda Thomas. The farm has been in the Thomas family since the early 1800s. Their ancestor, Solomon Thomas, purchased the original farm in 1882 from his parents, George and Sarah Thomas. The home Tracy and Brenda live in today was built in 1857 and served as a hospital during the Civil War. The Thomas family has continued growing throughout the years. Chris and his wife, Kelsey, have a five-year-old son, Landon, and a three-year-old daughter, Carter. Daniel and his wife, Bryanna, have a seven-year-old-son, Luke, and a three-year-old daughter,
Maci. The youngest of the three brothers, Lonnie, is married to his wife, Allyson. Cattle have been in the family for multiple generations. They had dairy cattle until 1988 when they dispersed and shifted their focus to beef cattle. In 1989, Tracy and his father, Donald, purchased their first group of Limousin-influenced crossbred cattle. They ran registered Limousin bulls on their crossbred cattle and soon Chris acquired his first purebred female. In 2001, Chris purchased his first registered Limousin heifer, KC Holy Foly, for $800. From there, over the course of four to five years, Chris and his younger brothers, Daniel and Lonnie, purchased 1520 registered calves that they exhibited at shows across the country during their junior show careers. Seated on the original 250 acres, Thomas and Son Farms has grown to become a name recognized across the country for superior Limousin and Lim-Flex genetics. They farm approximately 800 acres

continued from page 48 Back home at the farm, Chris and Lonnie make the breeding decisions together, but Lonnie and Clayton Schowe are the day-today manpower behind the cattle operation. “Not everybody comes here to walk through our barns because we are so far East and that’s a battle we face. We have plenty of local bull customers and we also have bulls that sell to large programs across the country, but it makes it tough to sell show heifers,” Chris explained. “We really enjoy the show heifer business—we get to meet a lot of new people and travel the country,” Lonnie remarked. “We try not to build our cattle all the same, that way we have variety for our customers.” Each fall in October, the Thomas family hosts their annual Halloween Hunnies Show Female Sale. “Doing this sale privately we are able to be more personal with our customers and figure out what they need and want,” Lonnie said. “Chris and I pick our cattle apart harder than most anybody else would so that we’re able to explain them and tell people about them. We want to give people a visual without having to come to Maryland,” Lonnie said. The operation keeps approximately 20 replacement heifers back each year. They also keep 15-20 bulls to sell and the rest of the females are available as replacements. In addition, they sell beef from 40 fat steers each year to private customers. “We try to find the niche in everything, because we don’t like to waste a single calf,” Chris said. Today the Limousin breed is benefiting leaps and bounds from the exposure seen throughout the country. The new, increased demand for high-quality Limousin and Lim-Flex show females has opened an entirely new opportunity for Limousin breeders. “As a result of such demand, we as breeders are able to do more flushing and place more quality females across the country. This is what the breed needs so that we are able to funnel the money spent on elite show females directly back into the breed to continue building and improving the breed. We can do more flushing, put in more embryos and acquire a

donor female from another Limousin breeder. That circulates money back through the breed. It brings a totally different perspective to the breed,” Chris said. For Chris, “It’s not just the show cattle—it goes both ways. We have to give and take a little bit when it comes to performance and show cattle. You’ll create a market that everybody can see and utilize. If someone comes to our sale, my top show heifer might not be what they’re looking for, but my third or fourth best show heifer prospect has really big numbers, looks good and all of a sudden I have a double market. I have the show market and I have people coming in saying ‘wow she looks good and has big numbers, I can breed her a lot of ways.’” The future of the Thomas and Son Farms program is bright. “I want to raise elite show heifers, but I also want those females to turn around and make the Limousin breed better as cows,” Lonnie said. “I would like to raise a few more elite Crown Royal-type bulls and I want TASF to be known as an overall elite Limousin breeder, especially east of the Mississippi. I want people to think of us not only for elite show females, but for cows and bulls as well,” Lonnie said. “We take great pride in the fact that our cattle are well numbered. You can use our A.I. sires both ways and excel—performance wise and in the show ring. We have to keep in mind that it’s not just one way or the other, we’re all in it together,” Chris said. The Freund family focuses on family values and the Limousin breed. by Megan Silveira

he Colorado town is called Elizabeth. It’s just southeast of Denver when looking at a map, but in person, the high plains stretch wide and far, adorned with short grass. Beyond the timber sprinkled throughout the town, a ridge known as Palmer Divide can be found. In 1970, Joe Freund found himself standing on the north side of the ridge, watching a small creek trickle to the north. He knew without a doubt he had found a landscape worthy of being called home. Since the day his father purchased the land, Joey Freund found his paradise on Earth — Running Creek Ranch. Though nowadays the urban sprawl is slowly creeping closer, Joey and his family are staying true to their roots. They run 1,000 Limousin cows on the ranch, selling their bulls primarily to commercial customers. “We’ll sell about 100-160 two-year-old bulls, which is kind of unique,” Joey explains. “There’s not a lot of two-year-old bulls being sold, but it’s worked out well for us.” In addition to their age, Running Creek bulls must exhibit performance and longevity. The country they are being turned out into after being sold is high country. At altitudes upwards of 9,000 feet, Joey said it takes a special kind of animal to thrive in Colorado and surrounding states. “It takes a different kind of bull to run in that kind of country,” he said. “Limousin bulls have always been good at that — they’re adapted to the environment.” He adds that the breed isn’t known for being affected by high altitude disease or brisket disease. It was this unique feature that was one of the reasons Joey’s father first purchased their herd of halfblood Limousin in 1980. Joe found a man in North Park, Colorado, who needed a place to run some cattle. Six months after those cows came to Running Creek Ranch, the man was ready to sell and Joe was ready to buy. Joey still remembers the words his dad used to brag on the animals. “He said, ‘That’s the nicest bunch of cows,’” Joey recalls. “They required less hay and forage to maintain themselves and still were productive and fertile. By doing so, you are always helping your family in a selfless manner,” Ethan said. “Having the ranch has allotted me securities in life. My dad taught me to chase my goals and to know that he would always have my back. Raising cattle has truly been the best thing for me.” Joey considers it an honor to raise his children in the agriculture industry. He instills in them the same values his father pressed upon him.
Compared to other breeds, the principals at Running Creek Ranch have found their Limousin females require less hay and forage to maintain themselves while remaining productive and fertile.
62
A perfect example is the way the family feeds cattle. Each morning, one member of the family heads out to the barn and hitches up a team of draft horses to a hay rack to deliver feed to the herd. It’s a tradition that stems back to the beginning of the Freund’s time on the ranch, as Joe was always passionate about draft horses. This unique feeding system isn’t the only truly form of horsepower on the operation, either. Joey said the family uses horses to move cattle on the property in addition to feeding with a team of horses. “It’s a little bit like old country,” Ethan explains with a smile. “Horses don’t break down near often as tractors or need any hardware updates. It just makes it easier, and you feel closer to the cows. It’s all I’ve ever known.” Ethan said his entire family has a deep sense of pride for their way of life, and his father is always eager to help secure the future of the ranching lifestyle. It’s this love that first led Joey to serve on the National American Limousin Foundation (NALF) Board of Directors. He was asked to join the board six years ago and has been involved ever since. “The comradery and the people you meet – it’s just great,” he explains of the position. “Every year you’re just trying to help steer the breed in the right direction.” Beyond connecting with cattlemen across the country about the work that excites him, Joey said he truly enjoys the business side of things, as well. He’s always willing to put in the work on the business side of things to help members accomplish the goal of promoting the breed further. “It’s been nice to see him get to represent us on our side of things,” Ethan explains. The younger Freund cattleman said the board is built of all kinds. From those driven by the desire to breed elite show heifers to others like Running Creek Ranch working to supply the next bull calf crop, it’s important for all segments of the industry to be represented, Ethan said. For Joey, serving is a way to help ensure the future of the Limousin breed and help create a successful industry his children and generations to come can call home. Joey’s biggest hope is that the way of life he treasures can stay preserved in Elizabeth, Colorado, at Running Creek Ranch. Since he took over the day-to-day operations from his father, he has kept the

herd consistent with what Joe had hoped for the herd when he started the family’s journey in the Limousin breed. “Time goes by so fast,” Joey said. “It basically goes back to the great way of life — all the good times and the things we’ve done through the years. We’re truly blessed.” ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Megan Silveira is a freelance writer originally from Denair, California. She is currently based in Saint Joseph, Missouri. Study Shows Eating Meat Extends Life Expectancy
H
as eating meat become unfairly demonized as bad for your health? That’s the question a global, multidisciplinary team of researchers has been studying and the results are in — eating meat still offers important benefits for overall human health and life expectancy. Study author, University of Adelaide researcher in biomedicine, Dr. Wenpeng You says humans have evolved and thrived over millions of years because of their significant consumption of meat. “We wanted to look more closely at research that has thrown a negative spotlight on meat consumption in the human diet,” You says. “Looking only at correlations of meat consumption with people’s health or life expectancy within a particular group, and or, a particular region or country, can lead to complex and misleading conclusions. Our team broadly analyzed the correlations between meat eating and life expectancy, and child mortality, at global and regional levels, minimizing the study bias, and making our conclusion more representative of the general health effects of meat eating.” Published in the International Journal of General Medicine, the study examined the overall health effects of total meat consumption in 170-plus countries around the world. The researchers found that the consumption of energy from carbohydrate crops (grains and tubers) does not lead to greater life expectancy, and that total meat consumption correlates to greater life expectancy, independent of the competing effects of total calories intake, economic affluence, urban advantages and obesity. “While detrimental effects of meat consumption on human health have been found in some studies in the past, the methods and findings in these studies are controversial and circumstantial,” You says. Senior author of the study and University of Adelaide Emeritus Professor Maciej Henneberg says humans have adapted to meat-eating from the perspective of their more than two million years evolution. “Meat of small and large animals provided optimal nutrition to our ancestors who developed genetic, physiological and morphological adaptations to eating meat products and we have inherited those adaptations,” Henneberg says.
64
But with the strong development of nutrition science and economic affluence, studies in some populations in developed countries have associated meat-free (vegetarian and vegan) diets with improved health. “I think we need to understand that this may not contradict the beneficial effect of meat consumption,” nutritionist on the study Yanfei Ge says. “Studies looking into the diets of wealthy, highly educated communities, are looking at people who have the purchasing power and the knowledge to select plantbased diets that access the full nutrients normally contained in meat. Essentially, they have replaced meat with all the same nutrition meat provides.” Co-author and University of Adelaide biologist, Dr. Renata Henneberg says today meat is still a major food component in the diets of many people around the world. “Before agriculture was introduced, 10,000 years ago, meat was a staple food in the human diet,” she says. “Depending on which minor groups of people you study and which meat types you choose to consider, the measure of meat’s role in human health management may vary. However, when all meat types for all the populations are considered, as they are in this study, the positive correlation between meat consumption and overall health at a population level is not sporadic.” Co-author, anthropologist at the University of Adelaide, and biologist at the Polish Academy of Science, Dr. Arthur Saniotis says the findings are in line with other studies that show cerealbased foods have lower nutritional value than meat. “While this is no surprise to many of us, it still needs to be pointed out,” Saniotis says. It highlights that meat has its own components contributing to our overall health beyond just the number of calories consumed, and that without meat in our diet, we may not thrive. “Our take home message from the paper is that meat-eating is beneficial to human health provided that it is consumed in moderation and that the meat industry is conducted in an ethical way.” Source: The University of Adelaide

FDA Okays Genome-edited Beef Cattle Trait
T
he U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced it has made a low-risk determination for the marketing of products, including food, from two genome-edited beef cattle and their offspring after determining that the intentional genomic alteration (IGA) does not raise any safety concerns (low-risk determination). The IGA results in the equivalent genotype (genetic make-up) and short-hair coat trait seen in some conventionally bred cattle, known as a “slick” coat. This is the FDA’s first low-risk determination for enforcement discretion for an IGA in an animal for food use. “Today’s decision underscores our commitment to using a risk and science-based, data-driven process that focuses on safety to the animals containing intentional genomic alterations and safety to the people who eat the food produced by these animals,” said Steven Solomon, D.V.M., M.P.H., director of the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine. “It also demonstrates our ability to identify low-risk IGAs that don’t raise concerns about safety, when used for food production. We expect that our decision will encourage other developers to bring animal biotechnology products forward for the FDA’s risk determination in this rapidly developing field, paving the way for animals containing low-risk IGAs to more efficiently reach the marketplace.” Based on the agency’s review of scientific data, the FDA has determined that the product is low-risk and does not raise any safety concerns, and the FDA does not expect the product developer of the IGA to pursue the FDA’s approval prior to marketing (enforcement discretion). To date, the FDA has made low-risk determinations for enforcement discretion for many other IGAs in animals for non-food uses and also has approved applications for five IGAs: in groups of goat, chicken, salmon, rabbit and, most recently, in a line of pigs.
IGAs are alterations made using molecular technologies that introduce changes to the genome of an animal. The IGA in these cattle, known as PRLR-SLICK cattle, was introduced using a genome-editing technique known as CRISPR. The IGA can be passed on to offspring, allowing the trait to be shared through conventional breeding. There are conventionally bred cattle with naturally-occurring mutations that result in the same extremely short, slick-hair coat. Reports in scientific literature indicate that cattle with this extremely short, slick-hair coat are potentially able to better withstand hot weather. Cattle that are comfortable in their environment are less likely to experience temperature-related stress and may result in improved food production. Although PRLR-SLICK cattle have an equivalent trait to those cattle with a naturally-occurring short hair coat, they are not currently in commerce. The product developer plans to use the genetic products from these two animals with select customers in the global market soon and anticipates meat products will be available for purchase by general consumers as early as two years. The FDA reviewed genomic data and other information submitted by the product developer confirming that the IGA in genome-edited PRLR-SLICK cattle is equivalent to naturally occurring mutations that have arisen in several breeds of cattle as an adaptation to being raised in tropical or subtropical environments. The data also confirmed that the IGA results in the same slick-hair trait as in cattle found in conventional agriculture. Further, the food from the cattle is the same as food from conventionally bred cattle that have the same slick-hair trait. The FDA does not expect farms or facilities not owned or operated by the developer that are producing and breeding these low-risk PRLRSLICK cattle using conventional breeding techniques to register with the agency. The low-risk determination was provided to Acceligen.

s cattle ranchers, is there really a season better than spring? Calves are hitting the ground, bull sales are in full swing and it’s time to start thinking about syncing, breeding and getting ready to start the process all over again. It’s truly satisfying seeing the results of last year’s carefully thought-out mating decisions, and how we can assess and utilize those decisions to improve our bottom line. I had the privilege of attending the Limousin events at the Black Hills Stock Show in Rapid City, South Dakota, this year. It was a great experience getting to travel to such a beautiful part of the country and watch a bull show and sale of such deep quality from top to bottom. Yet another example of what an exciting time it is to be in the Limousin breed. While at Black Hills, I also attended the South Dakota Limousin Association banquet and caught up with breeders. It was an honor to be included in such an event, and I thank each and every one of you for making me feel welcome. Another reason I enjoyed my South Dakota visit was getting to lay out to our membership one of the most exciting projects I have
been a part of in my 10 years at NALF. As we gear up for spring, we are putting into motion our long-awaited research project through the North American Limousin Research Foundation. With additional revenue generated the last two years, NALF has been able to allocate more funds toward commercial advertising, as well as gift the Research Foundation $45,000. In order to back up our advertising, our research project will officially be moving forward this May. Starting with two Angus cow herds of approximately 225 head each out of Montana, cows will be broken up and bred into three groups of feeder cattle: Limousin sired, Lim-Flex sired and Angus sired. Approximately 198 steer and heifer calves will be backgrounded and then delivered to South Dakota State University at 600-650 lbs., where they will enter the grower phase for 85 days, followed by finishing, and finally harvest. continued on page 70

Tissue samples will be collected on each calf to determine the sire group in order to correctly capture and identify carcass data to incorporate into the NALF herdbook. Each sire group will look to keep growth traits high, while holding birth weights moderate. Primarily, the objective of the study will be to evaluate the influence of each sire is progeny Angus cows. The calves will be fed to three different days on feed endpoints of 245, 280 and 315 days. We will measure growth performance, efficiency of dietary net energy utilization and carcass characteristics. When the study concludes in 2024, we hope to prove that Limousin and Lim-Flex influenced cattle have an advantage in efficiently and profitably converting feed to carcass weight, even when taken to heavier outweights. With Limousin and Lim-Flex genetics, we can produce cattle that meet and exceed quality grade and yield grade targets when compared to straightbred counterparts, while producing heavier carcasses. Through this project, we would like to show that cattle feeding profitability is driven by more than just one trait. Quality grade, yield grade and superior feed efficiency must all be factored into the profitabily equation of finished cattle. Harvested cattle need to achieve an acceptable quality grade level while reducing as many yield grade 4s and 5s as possible. Additionally, with the government becoming increasingly involved in the sustainability of agriculture, it is as important as ever that the beef industry stay as efficient as possible. Projects of this nature are labor intensive, financially demanding, and can be downright daunting to take on. It takes us out of our comfort zone and into the great unknown. As we navigate through this, it is important to remember we are all on the same team. Your Board of Directors and NALF staff have put countless hours into this project, and we want to see it succeed as much as you do. Keep in mind that while opinions may differ, we are all in it for the same reason: we believe in the Limousin advantage and are Limousin proud. I encourage anyone with questions to reach out to NALF staff or your Board of Directors. Those that are interested in donating will receive first access to research results from the Research Foundation, so please let us know if you would like to contribute. We know what these cattle can do, and it’s about time the rest of the industry knows it!

JUNIOR SCENE by Shelby Hubbard NALJA President
H
ey y’all! I hope all is well in your part of the country! If you are like me, you have been looking for warmer weather and summer to be here. In Oklahoma, we had a few cold spells and let me tell you that was plenty for a girl who loves the sunshine. With sunshine beaming that means Junior Nationals is quickly approaching. I may be a little biased, but the Junior Board has been working their tails off to incorporate numerous new activities for the junior members. Just a few examples we have decided to revamp the tenderfoot-mentor program and we will be incorporating a Genotype/Phenotype show into the week. The importance of the Tenderfoot program is for an experienced junior member to be paired with a younger junior member so their

junior national experience will be enjoyable and not intimidating. This year we are having a tenderfoot kickoff Saturday night and then a scavenger hunt Sunday afternoon. We understand there will be a few junior members that will still be traveling on Saturday night, but we do not want them to be turned away from coming to participate on Sunday. We encourage everyone to participate because it is a way to meet new people and visit with long-time friends. The scavenger hunt is a week-long activity, so be prepared for a competitive week among junior members! The Junior Board is excited about the Genotype/Phenotype show and hope it will relay the importance of both genotype and phenotype to the juniors. This show will consist of a judge ranking animals based
