WAROUND THE INDUSTRY

Details

elcome to the Limousin365 Annual Herd Sire Edition! As you page though this issue, you’ll find many of the breed’s most progressive programs highlighted along with several of the breed’s finest spring sales featured in accompaniment with multiple feature stories and industry news. It’s official, the first half of the 2024 bull sale season is in our rearview mirrors and now it’s time to charge into the spring breeding season with optimism and an eye on the future.

As we head full speed into the spring breeding season one thing that is important for everyone to keep in mind is, the small details matter! Currently, this topic is often front-and-center of many conversations I have with breeders across the country. Naturally, this time of year conversations are predominately focused on which bulls to use this spring—what’s worked, what’s new and what’s in demand? With that in mind, and in the spirit of this edition, I’d like to encourage you to truly study your hole card this breeding season and keep all the little details in mind that ultimately play huge roles.

There’s No Short Cutting Success

It may seem elementary at this juncture of our breed’s progression, but the simple usage of measurable performance records, ultrasound data, genomically-enhanced EPDs and feed efficiency testing should be considered when making breeding decisions beyond “the good ol’ eyeball test.” The reason for being that suggestive encompasses a myriad of factors, but most importantly, my personal understanding of the current competitiveness not only within the breed but, also the ‘breed to breed’ market share arm wrestle.

With that in mind, that leads me into my next piece beyond the technologies and tools that put the “details” at our fingertips. There’s no short cutting success. That said, staying current with the industry’s

trends and evaluating industry market calls can be of assistance when contriving your next mating solutions. I’d like for you to take a moment to study your hole card and make sensible breeding decisions that satisfy both marketplace acceptance and your program goals.

Marketing Your Product At The Highest Level

Having awareness to the all encompassing “details” and taking care of the little things greatly impact your ability to market your product at the highest-level which ties directly to “there’s no short cutting success.”

Details are an integral part of any marketing strategy. They have the power to captivate and engage customers, making them more likely to make a purchase decision. By paying attention to the smallest details, businesses can create a brand identity that stands out in a crowded market. From the customer relations aspect to the behind-the-scenes organization used to keep your operation in check, every detail counts in creating a cohesive and impactful program.

Additionally, details can help build trust and confidence in your product or service, as they are indicators of care and attention. By providing accurate and detailed information about your product, your business can establish itself as an expert in your field. Overall, details are crucial in marketing as they help differentiate a business from its competitors and drive customer engagement and satisfaction.

In closing, I sincerely hope you enjoy our Herd Sire Edition issue. It is both a benefit to your respective program and a promotional piece the Limousin breed can be proud of. A big thank you to all the advertisers, readership and those that continue to support and offer feedback as it relates to your magazine, Limousin365

God bless and I look forward to seeing you down the sale trail this spring. We are all in this together. Stay Limousin proud

IPRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

would like to begin by thanking my fellow board members for giving me the opportunity to serve as your NALF President in 2024. I appreciate the opportunity to assist the membership of the North American Limousin Foundation as we continue to move the breed forward. My family, like many of you, has a vested interest in seeing the Limousin breed succeed today and in the future. At the time of this writing, it is encouraging to see bull season be so successful for folks who have already conducted their sales in early 2024. Given the decline in the U.S. cattle inventory, it will remain critical to sell high-quality, performance-driven bulls to commercial cattlemen in order to grow the breed into the future.

2024 NALF BOARD OF DIRECTORS

PRESIDENT, Austin Hager ....................................... Karlsruhe, ND

701-626-2345

• hagercc@srt.com

The quality of NALF’s herdbook, with the tools and EPD enhancements achieved over the last five years, gives us the opportunity to mate superior cattle if we are actively engaged in utilizing the tools available to us. From the inclusion of actual carcass phenotypes, genomics and new commercially-focused EPDs and indexes introduced this spring, I feel we are headed in the right direction.

We are excited to add two new EPDs—Average Daily Gain and Dry Matter Intake. These EPDs were both vital in allowing us to add a Feed Efficiency sub-index (FE) and a newly updated Terminal Index (TI) produced by IGENDEC software to better measure cattle that fit today’s fed cattle marketing trends. These primarily consist of grid and formula based marketings that rely heavily on carcass weight, yield grade and quality grade for premiums and discounts.

VICE PRESIDENT, Joey Freund ......................................... Elizabeth, CO 303-841-7901

• freundjoe@outlook.com

SECRETARY, Ronn Cunningham ..................................... Rose, OK 918-629-9382

Thank you to NALF staff, Dr. Weaber, Dr. Spangler and Breed Improvement Committee Chairman, Jerry Wulf for continuing to push the quality of our data to a higher level. Some may not elect to utilize these new EPDs, which is of course your choice, but those of us trying to make superior seedstock that can be effectively utilized profitably by commercial cattlemen need these additional tools to remain competitive in the future.

My family was fortunate to a have the ability to return and exhibit a pen of bulls at the 2024 NWSS this year. We enjoyed the experience as a whole, but especially the new facility NWSS has put in place to exhibit pen cattle. I would encourage those of you who have the ability to exhibit pen bulls to attend this show as we look to grow our numbers. The ability to market your program to others as well as to fellow breeders is important in promoting both Limousin and LimFlex cattle.

We are looking forward to seeing the results of our cattle on test at SDSU this year as we gather both feeding performance and carcass data on the three different contemporary groups of calves currently on feed. We will find out what we are good at and also what we may need to improve upon with the results. We look forward to an exciting year ahead.

CEXECUTIVE SUMMARY

urrently, it is midway through the month of March and we are in the middle of a strong bull sale season at NALF. Demand has been strong for high-quality sires given all the reductions we have seen in the U.S. cattle herd throughout the nation. The January 1 cattle inventory report reported the beef cow inventory of 28.2 million head which is the smallest recorded in the last 50 years.

Reductions in the total beef cattle inventory coupled with historically strong beef demand resulted in the highest fed cattle and feeder cattle prices ever recorded during 2023. Despite record prices, expansion of the herd is likely to be delayed throughout the U.S.

Lingering areas of drought, high input costs, higher interest rates and market risk or uncertainty will most likely delay expansion, resulting in continued high cattle markets over the next three years. Once expansion does gradually return, this will result in further declines in beef production once heifer retention starts in earnest and fed cattle supplies decline even further into 2025 and 2026.

This reduction in beef cow numbers actually means the competition for commercial bull customers will increase even more. Until heifer retention begins, which is also dependent on favorable moisture, a smaller beef cow inventory means bull customers will need superior quality bull power to help them produce more pounds per head on each calf weaned and sold over the scale.

There has never been a better time to utilize all the tools available to make cattle that are not only sound phenotypically, but possess superior performance on their EPD trait deck backed by genomics and complete performance data for high accuracy. The tools to help mate superior genetics are there to utilize through your association. Once produced, marketing your program to commercial cattlemen is of paramount importance.

The requirement to produce superior quality genetics relevant to profitability is why your NALF board and Breed Improvement Committee have pushed forward with the release of new commercially relevant EPDs and updated indexes. Both tools are vital to not only building superior seedstock but are also of high importance to commercial cattlemen.

In February of 2024, NALF released an Average Daily Gain EPD and Dry Matter Intake EPD produced by IGS. ADG is simply postweaning gain (YW-WW/160 days). NALF has been pushing for the development of Dry Matter Intake (DMI) over the last three years and IGS has finally completed it. For cattle that have a phenotype available (which NALF now has 5,000 head with intake, RFI and ADG) the

data will increase accuracy. For the remainder of the cattle, DMI will be estimated on growth data which has a very high correlation for accuracy on the trait.

The key to DMI is to remember a lower percentile rank is not necessarily a bad thing. As long as cattle are giving back adequate gain for their intake, then you are still producing pounds efficiently. The real use of DMI is to get to the good stuff. Conversion rates are the most important item to measure and NALF will do this with the new FE Index and updated Terminal Index via IGENDEC that are now being published.

You will find cattle that range in the 50th to 90th percentile for DMI but rank exceptionally well on their new FE (Feed Efficiency EPD) if they are converting their intake. The FE sub-index will be published weekly by IGS and simply measures cost of feed and an animal’s individual intake versus the value of a fed steer on a five year average, adjusted by an individual animal’s gain. The formula for FE is: (Ration cost @ $180 per ton/2000 lbs = -$.14 X DMI EPD)+( Fed market value at $1.17/160 days X PWG) = FE (Feed efficiency sub index).

In other words, the marginal value of gain over feed cost. The higher the FE sub-index EPD, the better or reflective of superior conversion of feed to pounds gained. (Cost of feed based off an animal’s DMI is calculated as a negative number and added back to the market value per pound X an animals post-weaning gain).

The new Terminal Index (TI) was developed via IGENDEC software which is made available by the Beef Improvement Federation. These indexes are customizable, due in large part to Dr. Spangler and Dr. Weaber who were heavily involved with the development. Dr. Weaber was heavily involved with the NALF board for the last two years in formatting, building and weighting of traits for the new Terminal Index for Limousin.

NALF will continue to run $MTI (NALF’s long standing Mainstream Terminal Index), which is primarily calculated off growth traits, Marbling and Yield Grade). The push by the NALF board and Breed Improvement Committee was to develop an updated index that is more reflective of today’s changing marketing environment for fed cattle.

Cattle are now being fed to much larger outweights and the majority of them are now sold on a formula or carcass grids. These grids are heavily dependent on adequate carcass weights, yield grade and quality

grade versus selling cattle live over the scale and sold with a standard shrink 10-20 years ago. The new TI Index encompasses many traits. It is also much more heavily weighted on CW EPD rather than WW and YW growth traits to be reflective of formula and grid cattle.

Below is the formula and list of traits used in the new Terminal Index:

TIi = aCED * CEDEPDi + aWW * WWEPDi + aYW * YWEPDi + aDMI * DMIEPDi + aCW * CWEPDi + aREA * REAEPDi + aFT * FTEPDi + aMARB * MARBEPDi

You can see from the previous formula that CED, DMI, CW, REA, FT and MB are all included in the new TI in addition to the growth traits. The value of the weighting is represented in the pie chart below:

I can tell you after analyzing hundreds of cattle on the new TI with Dr. Weaber, cattle have to have a well-rounded trait deck to excel on the new index, but cattle that have exceptional Carcass Weight, REA, BF EPD (Yield Grade) and adequate Marbling really excel on the new TI. Individual DMI is in the index, but as long as they are providing adequate carcass weight EPD in return for their intake, cattle will do really well on the new TI as long as they are not severely deficient in an included EPD elsewhere.

The new index is built to not only be relevant to the commercial cattle industry, but also be reflective of the positive traits Limousin cattle bring to the industry in terms of superior yield grade, (enhanced by superior REA, CW and overall cutability). Calving Ease Direct is also a weighted lightly into the index to add bonus to sires that excel on calving ease even in the terminal index as well.

NALF will also release a long awaited maternal index soon once IGS has completed their mature cow weight EPD. Please call if you have any questions with the new EPDs and Indexes.

Also, of high importance—please take time to make note of NALF’s new mail address listed below. Have a great summer!

MEMBER AND INDUSTRY NEWS BRIEFS

The NALF office has moved!

Our new address is: 6155 S Main Street, Suite 245, Aurora, CO 80016

All DNA samples will need to be sent to our new address.

Genomic Testing on A.I. Sires and Donor Dams

Members will only be required to genomically enhance A.I. sires and donor dams with the 100K panel versus the 150K test. This will be equally effective from a marker standpoint, and will also be a cost savings to membership, with the 100K genomic panel priced at $57/ hd with free parentage, versus the 150K at $85/hd in years past. This results in a $29/per hd savings to membership. To receive an A.I. sire permit, all sires will be required to have the 100K genomic test with parent verification and be free of any defects versus the 150K testing. Contact Alison at Alison@NALF.org or Tammy at Tammy@NALF. org or at 303-220-1693 with any questions.

Performance Only Data

Members that utilize “performance only” for performance data on their cattle will be able to continue to do so, but those cattle will not receive EPDs beginning September 1, 2022. The NALF board voted unanimously to publish EPDs on registered cattle only. Members utilizing the “performance only” category to record performance data will not receive EPDs on those cattle and must register their cattle accordingly to receive EPD information.

Ultrasound Data and Yearling Weights

Members should be aware that yearling weights taken at the time of carcass ultrasound data collection are not automatically loaded into DigitalBeef. If a breeder wants the ultrasound weights to be used for yearling data, please notify Stephanie at Steph@NALF.org.

Ultrasound barnsheets may be generated and printed from the Member Site on the NALF-DigitalBeef platform. There are instructions for printing barnsheets on the Member Site Help page at NALF.org.

It’s simple and there’s no secret, these are the kind of bulls that roam our breeding pastures and helped roar us to a $8,640 bull average at our recent production sale.

A cattle breed, as well as individual breeding programs, are dependent upon commercial acceptance. Throughout the year, we listen to our customers who aren’t quick to jump on fads or propaganda. Heavy muscled, high percentage, purebred bulls that bring a huge boost in heterosis and profits to their pockets are the kind of bulls commercial cattlemen demand.

Call us for semen on these powerful herd sires that can propel your program forward as well.

AGet Connected and be the “Source”

s we all know, there are several places and people where you can buy “seedstock genetics”. As the competition continues to get stronger and stronger, the one sustainable way to keep business and grow from it, is to give the service you would want if you were the buyer. There are many fundamental ideas as well as very creative ideas you can offer as a service element to go a step above and beyond to keep and grow your business to a new level.

CREATE your program: Create a brand that people want to be a part of and enjoy being around.

BE the program: Create an image that represents who you are and what you stand for.

GIVE people a reason to buy in: Create product with heart, and relationships with meaning.

Offer affordable options for trucking or better yet—make it free to a certain location on cattle purchased. If you can, deliver the cattle yourself and step onto the place of the buyer, spending time learning their story and growing that relationship. It is one thing to be able to afford an investment, but it is another expense to bring a new purchase home—help make the investment worth it!

Take time out of your busy schedule to visit new and existing clients while raising a quality product. The lasting impression you leave on people’s minds knowing you took time out of your life to come admire what they have created is a great gesture. Make yourself familiar as to what their cattle operation is all about, so moving forward you can buy, sell or recommend what they have.

Stay connected with certain segments of the industry, be it commercial markets or the highend seedstock business. Keep yourself in a position to assist with the marketing of someone’s product they have raised from genetics they invested in from you.

Offer a helping hand with your knowledge on how to prepare and manage calves through the connections you have made. If it’s a bull that was purchased and there is potential for semen sales, work with the buyer and assist them with promotion, semen collection and the handling of semen for sale. Show community values by moving your frozen genetics privately or through your own auctions, letting the buyer have access to product at a “customer appreciation” price!

Support your client’s advertising and promotional launches through social media in regard to their product.

Treat your clients the way you want to be treated. When issues arise, be kind and work efficiently toward solutions.

Take care of those who take care of your business. Lead with courage, have faith in what you offer, be innovative in the low times, and generous in the high times. At the end of the day, nothing matters more than who we are, how we treat others, and living life with purpose.

~Make the lives of others better, by doing something of lasting value.~

Best Regards,

All In The Family

Twelve miles south of the Canadian border is home to Vaughn Farms. Brothers David and Craig Vaughn raise Limousin cattle in Cavalier, North Dakota, with their families. David and his wife, Brittany, have three children, Wyatt, Remi and Hope. Craig and his wife, Kelly, have two children, Weston and Maggie.

It is a true family effort when it comes to Vaughn Farms. They grow their own hay and feed on the farm, all of the artificial insemination and all the clipping, picturing and videoing of their sale cattle is done themselves. Along with raising Limousin cattle, the Vaughns farm approximately 2,000 acres and pasture another 1,000 acres. Across the 2,000 acres of farm ground, they grow wheat, soybeans, corn, sugar beets, canola and alfalfa.

“Everybody is involved and helps out when they can,” David explained. “We’re family owned and operated. All the day-to-day work is done by us since we try not to hire anything out.”

David and Craig’s father, Tom, purchased the farm’s first Limousin bull from a neighbor in 1978. Vaughn Farms would then grow from 20 females to approximately 50 females in 2001. With the desire to expand, the Vaughns have grown to calving out 150 females each spring.

A noteworthy part of their operation stems from not having purchased a single female in more than 20 years. “Every cow on the farm is born here and raised here,” David remarked.

Another important aspect of their business is their Annual Production Sale, where they sell 45 bulls and 20 bred heifers. Twentynine years ago, they started the production sale and it was called The Dakota Connection. The group of consignors at that time were Vaughn Limousin, Effertz Black Butte Acres, Guthmiller Limousin

and Herman and Judy Symens. Over the years, the Vaughns have kept with their Annual Production Sale and in 2012 they rebranded it as the “Genetics For The Future” Production Sale.

Vaughn Farms has sold cattle into four Canadian provinces and 16 states across the country. “Muscle still matters—people are looking for eye appeal, muscle and big ribeyes,” David remarked.

The cattle Vaughn Limousin raise appeal to both the purebred and commercial cattleman. “Our goal is to have the last one we sell be as good as the first one,” David said.

“All the strides we’ve made as a breed in the last 20 years is why we stick with Limousin. In the past, the cattle could be shallow made with small testicles and kind of wild, but now they’re extremely docile and deep bodied with big testicles and muscle. That’s the driving force behind our bulls—they’re deep bodied, heavy muscled, sound and quiet. People like that,” David explained.

Most notably, DLVL Xerox 023X and TOMV Diesel 619D came from the heart of the Vaughn Limousin program. Both bulls went to purebred operations and gained notoriety through semen sales in the United States.

“Our ultimate goal for the cow herd is to get up to 200 cows. The challenge is finding available pasture in the Red River Valley. Ideally, we hope to sell 50 bulls and increase our bred heifer offering to 20 or 30 a year,” David said.

Growing up David and Craig had several important individuals mentoring and guiding them to help get them to where they are today. “Herman Symens was always helpful, we listened and watched to learn. He was very good at mating cattle and evaluating them. He taught me a lot,” David said.

David is also good friends with Glenn Treftz of Treftz Limousin. “We bounce a lot of ideas back and forth off each other and it’s a good relationship,” David said.

“The main thing for us is honesty. We’re honest with our customers, we have a good product and we stand behind it,” David said. “I believe the breed needs to focus back on the basics of what made Limousin popular in the beginning—muscle and calving-ease. Now that we have docility, depth of body and big testicles, we can compete with anybody.”

REYNOLDS LAND AND CATTLE A Breed Apart

The views in Washington and Oregon were a far cry from the high desert landscape Rod Reynolds spent his childhood calling home. The work was a bit different, too, as the days spent spreading the word of God on a mission with a church didn’t exactly align with the hours and expectations of a cowboy. Rod says there was one thing he looked forward to every month. Like clockwork, as soon as his dad Phil had finished with it, Rod knew his mom would send the Limousin World straight to his mailbox.

“Like my dad, I always had the desire to raise cattle,” Rod explained. “It was always the dream.”

Even after returning home from his mission trip, Phil still thought Rod needed an education, so Rod headed off to the same college as his brother Rick for a year, but at Christmas time, he had the perfect excuse to pack up and return to the family operation in Sanford, Colorado.

The phone rang and Phil said he just didn’t think they could make it through calving season without Rod. His bags were packed and Rod was on the road before he hung up the phone.

“I just felt the desire to come home,” he said. “It’s been 40-plus years, and I haven’t left since.”

36 • APRIL 2024

He’s the fourth generation of Reynolds to have an ingrained fondness for agriculture, but the family’s story wasn’t built on all smiles and easy times.

Forged With Determination and Grit

Rod’s great-grandfather, Byron, left Utah at an early age.

“He was just a kid,” Rod explains, but poverty pushed the young man out of the house and into the world.

Byron found Colorado to be a little steep and harsh, so he came in with some of the early cattle and settled land in New Mexico. He built up a decent amount of land, but it wasn’t much when it was split up amongst all his children.

Though Rod’s grandfather, Bruce, worked to carve a space out for his family, it was Rod’s father who cemented the Reynolds name in the cattle industry.

Phil served in the Army for a few years. Money came home each month, and when his service was over, enough had been accumulated to purchase 14 Shorthorn-cross females and 20 acres of land.

The homestead sat in south-central Colorado, near the New Mexico border. It’s a pretty flat area surrounded by mountains, but the pretty scenery only offers about eight inches of rainfall a year. Winters prove fairly challenging, earning the title of “harsh” from most locals.

But, despite it all, there’s nowhere else Phil thought better to raise cattle and a family.

His original dream has grown into quite the reality. Today, Rod and his son, Troy, run about 250 cows in the same high desert country that Phil first purchased when he came home from the Army.

“We’ve been here quite a while and developed most of what we have,” Rod explained with a bit of pride. “Basically we’ve grown our own. It hasn’t always been easy, but it’s been good for our family.”

About 175 of those herd numbers are Limousin and Lim-Flex cattle, a choice Troy says has been beneficial for business at Reynolds Land and Cattle.

“We feel like Limousin do more good things than other breeds, especially in our environment,” he said. “We’re different because of the high altitude. We have to have cattle that can get out and go and cover high country.”

Rod said their cattle have to be calm but not lazy. Docility is an important trait, but the cattle still have to be hearty and strong from the get go.

“That’s the way we treat our cattle; we respect them as well as they do us,” Rod said.

continued from page 37

Reynolds’ cattle are a bit different phenotypically than most, Troy adds, describing his ideal type and kind is a moderate framed animal that’s a bit softer made. Maternal qualities are prioritized, and he said their herd is a bit flashier to the eye with attractive heads and necks.

There’s no chasing EPDs for the Reynolds operation, as Troy noted higher performance cattle can sometimes lead to lower PAP scores—a big red flag in their environment.

Thanks to Phil, Rod said their herd has a unique look to them. Though Limousin is now the backbone of their operation, the breed hasn’t always been tied so closely to the family.

The operation started with Hereford genetics, but a trip to a livestock show featuring some of the first Limousin calves in the country drew Phil in.

He eventually invested in Limousin genetics and crossed those with a dairy breed. The Brown Swiss gave the herd “more milk, bone and disposition to start with,” Rod explained. It was a series of breeding

decisions that created success for the family, and dad proudly labeled the cattle “A Breed Apart.”

It’s been 54 years since the first Reynolds man sold a bull, and 2024 marked the 42nd Bull Sale for the operation. The auction happens much the same way anything else does at the ranch: with the help of family.

Troy preps cattle as far as clipping; his wife, Brittin, and sister, Hannah, work the sale block on auction day; and Hannah and her husband, Joe, help when they can with the daily chores and prep work. His other sister, Kylan, helps with marketing efforts. She lives in Nebraska with her husband, Aaron Tenney, who’s the auctioneer for the sale. Arguably the most important task—dinner for customers and guests on sale day—is done by Rod’s wife, Annette.

And though the comradery and quality stock draw a crowd, there’s been one big extra perk noted by Rod’s peers.

“I had a customer once tell me, ‘The difference between this sale and the rest I go to is I can tell this is your life,’” Rod said. “It’s not just in the blood. It’s a passion.”

“We feel like Limousin do more good things than other breeds, especially in our environment.”

While Rod jokingly says he doesn’t know anything different than his cowboy code, that passion he talks about has a history.

“My legacy started with my granddad,” Rod explained. “I think about my granddad every day.”

Grit was the foundation of Bruce’s life. He raised chickens and eggs to make ends meet, along with managing the land. But for Rod, the real success stems from the way Bruce treated people.

“Just the kind of man that he was…I guess I get emotional. Just the integrity. The honesty. The desire to be a good neighbor,” Rod explained.

There are stories of paying taxes on a struggling neighbor’s property and then handing the deed to the family without a second thought. Memories of sending Phil back to the auction yard when a check accidentally accounted for $500 more than what the family had earned that day.

Tale after tale of good deeds and honest moments pour out of Rod’s mouth when he’s asked about his family’s legacy.

“That’s just the way I was raised,” he said, and it’s the way he raised Troy in turn.

In a true full-circle moment, Troy’s tale of falling in love with the cattle industry seems to echo his father’s. He headed off on his own mission trip to the Cape Verde Islands, where he didn’t see a cow for two years.

When Troy came home to Colorado in September 2009, something settled in his heart.

“The minute I hit the back of the horse and saw those cows again,” he recounted, “I knew that was exactly what I wanted to do.”

It’s no real surprise that Rod’s 14 grandchildren are finding their own love for agriculture, too. Those old enough to show are claiming banners, and the younger grandchildren are finding a place in the tractor or the pasture on horseback.

“It’s fun to see those grandkids out here working,” Rod said. “That’s the fun part of it for me.”

While Rod’s teaching the sixth generation why the cattle grazing their property are “A Breed Apart,” there’s no doubt the title belongs just as much to the people as it does the animals.

In all that they do, the Reynolds family always have been and will continue to be examples of passion, kindness and integrity. There’s a call to good character Rod inherited from Reynolds men of the past, but there’s a simple, honest motive that keeps Rod traveling the same honest path.

“The people before me were just solid, good people. Integrity wasn’t anything you even thought about. We’ve tried to continue that,” Rod said. “In the next life, when I get there, I hope my dad and my granddad are not disappointed..”

“Docility and calving ease are the two number-one things for a commercial rancher. And the docility of the Lim-Flex is really great. But calving ease is top of the line. She has to be able to produce a calf without a lot of problems.” - Shane Whiting, Commercial Cow/Calf Producer

“Using a Continental breed such as Limousin or Lim-Flex on a British-based cow herd gives you the best of both worlds –the maximum combination of a balance between gain, feed efficiency and carcass quality.” - Dr. Kee Jim, CEO of Feedlot Health Management Services

“Genomic testing, breeder focus and the heritability of carcass traits have enabled all of us as seedstock producers to make rapid genetic gain in carcass quality. In fact, the marbling EPD value in our breed reflects an improvement of 0.25 to 0.35 for both Limousin and Lim-Flex, making them very comparable to other Continental breeds.” - Dan Hunt, Seedstock Cow/Calf Producer

Darron & Jeannie Uhl Named NALF “Commercial Producer Of The Year”

Darron and Jeannie Uhl of Battle Creek, Iowa, were selected as the North American Limousin Foundation (NALF) Commercial Producer Of The Year for 2023. The award was presented at the NALF Award Ceremony and Genetics On Ice Benefit Auction January 1, 2024 in conjunction with the Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

The Uhls have been farming, feeding cattle and operating a cow herd since 1996. They run a 200-head Angus-crossbred commercial cow herd and feed 1,000 head annually. Over the years, the operation has grown to about 2,000 crop acres.

In addition to their own home-raised calves, they also purchase Limousin-cross calves. The Uhls purchase their bulls from Leonard Limousin of Holstein, Iowa.

They market their home-raised calves at 1,500 lbs. at 16 months of age. They strive to hit a Yield Grade 1, Choice with 65-66% yield. Feed conversion is a major consideration, and they only purchase bulls that have feed conversion of at least a 5 lbs. to 1 lb. (grain to gain). They also select bulls with an YWT EPD higher than 130 and an actual ribeye

at 12 months larger than 16”. They sell directly to Cargill in Schuyler, Nebraska. All of the calf crop is sold as finished cattle, mostly on the grid.

The Uhls strive to maintain 95% of the calf crop that will weigh over 700 lbs. at seven months of age. In the next few years, they will try to expand their home-raised herd to 300 cows because their two sons are interested in joining the operation.

The number one priority for Darron is weaning weight plus final harvest weight. They are cognizant of docility as the behavior of the calf contributes to higher weight gain. Darron said Limousin bulls have always been easy to work with, and in his 30 years using Limousin bulls, they have never experienced a bull with a bad attitude. The Uhl family relies on detailed records for analysis in determining their following year’s herd goals and improvements.

Darron is a member of the Iowa and Ida County Cattlemen’s Association, and he has served in various service positions within their church. The Uhls were nominated for this prestigious award by Mark Leonard, Leonard Limousin of Holstein, Iowa, and the Iowa Limousin Association. Congratulations to Darron and Jeannie Uh!

Mark & Tammy Anderson Named NALF “Promoter of the Year”

Mark and Tammy Anderson were named NALF Limousin “Promoters of the Year” at the Genetics on Ice Benefit Auction January 1, 2024. The award ceremony took place at the Embassy Suites in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

They have worked tirelessly to oversee the research project that was established in 2021 by the North American Limousin Research Foundation (NALF). Mark and Tammy first met with the ranchers in Great Falls, Montana, in November of 2021. They traveled back to the two ranches to help breed over 450 commercial Angus cows in the spring of 2022. They made additional trips to the Montana ranches for pre-weaning, weaning, and finally for the shipping of the calves to South Dakota State University in November of 2023.

The time spent at the ranches included gathering the calves, tagging, branding, vaccinating and record keeping to ensure that the project was carried out with integrity. Mark and Tammy adhered to the breeding schedules, coordinated cleanup bulls, and played an integral role in the execution of the research project. They put in many hours of time, work, and commitment to see the project through.

Mark and Tammy both work for the North American Limousin Foundation. Mark has served as Executive Director since 2011. Prior to that, he worked with Producers Feedlot for 30 years. Tammy worked for State Farm for 30 years before joining the NALF staff in 2018.

They enjoy camping, fishing, and spending time with their two sons, Cooper and Tanner, and their four grandchildren. Congratulations to Mark and Tammy Anderson of Eaton, Colorado!

P Bar S Ranch Named NALF “Commercial Marketing Booster of the Year”

Like most successful seedstock producers, the roots of 2023 North American Limousin Foundation Commercial Marketing Booster of the Year are planted firmly in the commercial cattle industry.

Paul Sisemore owns P Bar S Ranch, a 6,000-acre seedstock operation in Sand Springs, Oklahoma. Paul originally thought he would raise a few of his own to consign to production sales. But the more Paul got involved the more his operation grew.

Today, Paul’s sizable seedstock herd is made up of Limousin, LimFlex, Red Angus and Black Angus cattle. As the property lines of the ranch started stretching farther and farther and calves kept hitting the ground, Sisemore penned a new slogan for the operation: The Little Ranch with the Big Genetics. While the ranch nowadays cannot be accurately described as being little in stature, Paul hasn’t wavered in his quest to raise and acquire top genetics. As such, he believes Limousin cattle bring traits to the table that help him, as well as his long list of customers, attain genetic success.

Since their first production sale in 2007, P Bar S Ranch has doubled the pasture land and the number of mother cows. Ranch manager Elgin Elmore has witnessed this growth firsthand over the past 15 years he has served as manager. Given Elgin’s dedication to quality and mindset focused on productivity, Paul says there’s no question just how valuable Elmore is to the operation. Elgin echoes the same level of high regard for Paul, as he says there is no better person in the business to work for.

P Bar S continually incorporates new technologies and breeding strategies to help produce the quality genetics they are known for. In the 30 years since Paul first started his journey, the cattle herd has grown in size, quality, and notoriety. But several things have certainly stayed the same. P Bar S Ranch never has, and never will, stop striving to raise, promote and stand behind the best genetics in the cattle industry.

Understanding Cattle Grazing Personalities

Matching herds to landscape can support animal growth and ecological needs.

Not all cattle are the same when it comes to grazing. Some like to wander while others prefer to stay close to water and rest areas.

Recognizing those personality differences could help ranchers select herds that best meet grazing needs on rangelands, leading to better animal health and environmental conditions, according to a new paper from the University of California, Davis, published in the journal Applied Animal Behaviour Science.

“Cattle can actually be beneficial for the rangelands,” said lead author Maggie Creamer, who recently earned her Ph.D. in animal behavior at UC Davis. “Vegetation in rangelands actually need these kinds of disturbances like grazing.”

Ranchers can add elements to the rangeland such as water, mineral supplements and fencing to influence where cattle graze, but little research has been done on how those efforts affect individual cows. Considering personalities could save money.

“If you’re spending all this money to add a management tool in order to change the distribution of your animals, that’s a huge cost to ranchers,” said Creamer. “Thinking about other tools, or selecting certain animals with these grazing traits, might be a better way to optimize the distribution on rangeland rather than spending a

bunch of money for something that may ultimately not pan out for all your animals.”

Effects of Grazing

Livestock graze on an estimated 56 million acres in California, and healthy rangelands host native vegetation and animals, foster nutrient cycling and support carbon sequestration.

Uneven grazing can degrade water quality, soil health and habitats. Optimizing grazing — including the even spread of cow pies — can improve the ecosystem while also reducing fuel loads for wildfires.

To better understand individual grazing patterns, researchers went to the UC Sierra Foothill Research and Extension Center in Browns Valley and tracked 50 pregnant Angus and Hereford beef cows fitted with GPS collars.

The Research

The cattle, which were tracked from June to August over two years, had access to 625 acres of grasslands and treed areas ranging in elevation from 600 to 2,028 feet. In the second year, a new watering site was added at a higher elevation.

Across the two years, the cows showed consistent and distinct grazing patterns even when water sources changed. Age and stage of pregnancy did not affect patterns, though cattle tended to clump near water and rest sites on hotter days.

The cows that ventured into higher elevations and farther from watering sites had more variability in their grazing patterns than those that stayed at lower elevations near water. That suggests it may be harder for non-wanderers to adjust to some landscapes.

“Thinking about the topography of your rangeland and your herd of cows can benefit both the animals and the sustainability of the land,” said Creamer, who next month begins work as a postdoctoral scholar in North Carolina.

Gauging Personalities

Keying in on personality type may sound difficult, but the researchers also found some clues as to how to pinpoint the wanderers and homebodies. Unlike cattle at feedlots, the breeding cow population, especially on rangelands in California and other western states, live largely “wild” lives and are rarely handled, save for vaccinations and weaning.

Research due to be published later this year found that paying attention to individual cow reactions during those events can help determine personalities. The cows that appeared more passive during those handling interactions tended to be nomadic.

“We found that you can maybe predict those hill climbers if you kind of look at how they act when the veterinarian or rancher handle them,” said senior author Kristina Horback, an associate professor in the Department of Animal Science at UC Davis.

Informing Practices

For ranchers, the findings could be invaluable, said Dan Macon, a livestock and natural resources cooperative extension advisor in Placer and Nevada counties for UC Agriculture and Natural Resources.

“Any time we can improve our understanding of cattle behavior, particularly at the individual level, it can improve how we handle livestock and manage the landscape,” he said.

Macon said that during the recent drought, it was hard to get cattle into higher country, but if ranchers could have selected the nomads, it may have saved money in terms of ranch labor and other efforts.

“If you ask a rancher who has been attentive to their cattle over many years, they know the personalities,” Macon said.

For Creamer and Horback, the research opens new doors into understanding herd behavior and dynamics, one that could be a cheaper alternative to high-tech solutions.

“Animal science tends to look overlook the mind of the animal when searching for solutions to challenges,” Horback said. “It’s always been a direct line to genetics for immunity or nutrition, but nothing about the mind of the animal. And that’s such a loss. There’s so much we can learn from behavior in the end.”

The Russell L. Rustici Rangeland and Cattle Research Endowment supported the research.

ANew Guide Helps Producers Maximize Values of Cull Cows

new resource developed by the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and CattleFax helps cattle producers maximize profitability from their culling decisions. “Right Way. Right Time. – A Guide to Cull Cattle Management” is now available at www.ncba.org.

“The purpose of this guide is to draw the producer’s attention to quality defects that affect the value of cull cows and bulls when they go to market,” said Jesse Fulton, director of the Nebraska Beef Quality Assurance Program.

With effective planning, cull cattle can be a significant source of revenue and should not be overlooked. In essence, cull cattle are market cattle. This new document addresses key problem areas, provides strategies for making timely culling decisions to prioritize animal welfare, and is designed to help producers capture more value through effective management regarding cull cattle.

“Buyers are looking and bid accordingly based on cull animal condition and present defects,” Fulton said. “Through timely marketing, before the condition of the animal deteriorates or the onset of defects, producers can get the most value for their cull animals.”

For cattle producers across the country, whether beef or dairy, cull cattle are part of doing business. Animals age, they no longer breed back, and their health deteriorates. Incorporating culling decisions into an operation’s best management practices benefits both animal welfare as well as the producer’s bottom line.

“While the value of the animal is top of mind, we also want to draw attention to the welfare of cull animals,” said Fulton. “These animals have helped pay the bills during their time on the operation. Producers owe it to the animal to ensure their welfare as they make their way into the beef supply chain.”

According to the 2022 National Beef Quality Audit, the market cow and bull sector provides an alternative product and a secondary value to animals once their original purpose is no longer suitable. When it comes to product fabrication, market cows and bulls are typically associated with ground beef production. However, over time, the industry has realized that some market cows and bulls have the potential to yield valuable primals to be fabricated and sold as retail cuts and to the restaurant trade.

Slow-Moving Feedlot Dynamics In The Cattle Markets

Cattle herds have felt a total reduction in calf production of 2.72 million head.

The March Cattle on Feed report showed February placements at 109.6 percent of one year ago. Placements were anticipated to be higher year-over-year, but the total was slightly above average prereport expectations. February feedlot marketings were 103.4 percent of last year, close to expectations. February had an extra day due to leap year, which accounts for some of the February increases. Some of the increased February placements were also due to weather disruptions in January that delayed cattle movements. In fact, combined January and February placements were up just 0.6 percent year-over-year.

The March 1 feedlot inventory was 11.838 million head, up 1.3 percent compared to 2023. Feedlot inventories have been stubbornly

slow to adjust down compared to cattle inventories generally. The U.S. calf crop since 2018, the largest calf crop in the last decade, has decreased by 7.5 percent. This is a total reduction in calf production of 2.72 million head in that six-year period. The 2024 calf crop is expected to be lower still with a smaller beef cow herd coming into this year. The calculated feeder supply on January 1, 2024 was the lowest in data available back to 1972.

However, feedlot inventories have remained relatively large despite declining cattle numbers. The total U.S. cattle on feed inventory

on January 1, 2024 was actually higher than the total cattle on feed on January 1, 2019, following the peak calf crop. Feed inventories continued to climb until 2022. The January 1, 2024 feedlot inventory was down just 1.8 percent from the 2022 peak.

The monthly cattle on feed reports tell the same story. Average monthly feedlot inventories continued to climb until the September 2022 peak of 11.836 million head. The 12-month moving average of monthly feedlot inventories declined from October 2022 to October 2023 before increasing to the current level of 11.62 million head in March 2024, down 1.8 percent from the peak. Recent increases in feedlot inventories are due to short-run changes in timing of cattle, i.e. pulling cattle ahead, but are not sustainable given the smaller overall cattle supplies.

The average monthly feedlot inventories decreased to a low of 10.375 million head in 2014 as head rebuilding began. One of the primary reasons that feedlot inventories have remained as high thus far is due to the continued placement and feeding of heifers. At some point, increased heifer retention will lead to more pronounced decreases in feedlot inventories, perhaps to levels similar to the 2014 low. It’s not clear when that will happen as herd rebuilding appears to be progressing slowly and drought continues to be a threat to the size of the beef cow herd. Other factors have contributed to maintaining feedlot inventories, especially additional days on feed and heavier finishing weights. The year-over-year increase in Mexican cattle imports in 2023 may also be contributing to the current increase in feedlot inventories but do not explain the generally larger feedlot inventories in recent years. Total feeder cattle imports from Mexico and Canada have been down over the period.

On January 1, 2024, the total feedlot inventory represented a record of 16.5 percent of the All Cattle and Calves inventory in the country. However, decreased cattle numbers and herd rebuilding will inevitably lead to smaller feedlot inventories in the coming months.

Across Breed EPD Adjustment Factors

Source Across Breed EPD Adjustment Factors

National Cattle Evaluation (NCE), and the resulting Expected Progeny differences (EPDs), have resulted in substantial genetic change since their inception. Typically EPDs are only comparable within breed; however, since 1993 the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC) has produced a table of additive adjustment factors which can be used to compare the genetic values of individual animals across breeds.

When producers find themselves in a bull selection situation including multiple breeds, the EPDs can be compared by adding/ subtracting the appropriate adjustment factors to the EPDs resulting from the most recent genetic evaluations for each of the 18 breeds. These factors adjust the EPDs to an Angus basis.

The table below shows the current adjustment factors needed to compare four EPDs across breeds.

As an example, we will look and Birth and Yearling Weight EPDs of three bulls from three different breeds selling in the OSU Cowboy Classic sale on April 7, 2024.

Lot 29 is an Angus bull:

Birth Weight EPD = 2.2; Yearling Weight EPD = 144

We are also considering the Lot 58 Hereford Bull:

Birth Weight EPD = 2.6; Yearling Weight EPD = 123

And the Lot 71 Brangus Bull:

Birth Weight EPD = -0.9; Yearling Weight EPD = 56

No adjustment is needed for the EPDs of the Angus bull. Note the Birth Weight EPD adjustment factor for Hereford is 0.8 and for Brangus is 2.7. The Yearling Weight EPD adjustment factor for Hereford is -39.3 and for Brangus is 11.6. Therefore, below we show the EPDs adjusted to an Angus basis:

Lot 58 Hereford Bull:

Birth Weight EPD = 2.6 + 0.8 = 3.4

Yearling Weight EPD = 123 – 39.3 = 83.7

And the Lot 71 Brangus Bull:

Birth Weight EPD = -0.9 + 2.7 = 1.8

Yearling Weight EPD = 56 + 11.6 = 67.6

Using the values from the table helps when bull selection decisions involve several breeds. In this example, assuming Yearling Weight is the trait of primary interest, we would expect the Lot 29 Angus bull to sire yearlings weighing approximately 60 pounds heavier than the Lot 58 Hereford (144 – 83.7 = 60.3). The Lot 58 Hereford bull should sire yearlings weighing approximately 16 pounds heavier than the Lot 71 Brangus bull (83.7 – 67.6 = 16.1).

The adjustment factors are based on comparisons of progeny of sires from each of the breeds in the Germplasm Evaluation Program at USMARC in Clay Center, Nebraska. These factors are released near the beginning of each year to facilitate the use of these tools during the spring bull buying season.

Brooklyn Thompson

Named NALF Media

And Activities Assistant

Brooklyn Thompson is a hardworking woman and likes to look at her glass half-full. She sees potential in everyone and everything and loves working with others. She is excited to be in a working environment that will challenge her mind to grow. “I’m not afraid to wear many hats, do the work that others won’t and do my best at making sure all jobs are done the right way the first time.”

Thompson is a mother, wife and livestock producer. She is also a lover of Casey Donahew music, traveling and spending time with her family.

Thompson’s story began on a small family owned and operated farm in Lathrop, MO, where she raised livestock alongside her parents and three sisters. Since she was a little girl she has had a passion for livestock, agriculture, photography and writing.

Brooklyn started a hobby photography business in 2012, graduated high school in 2016, attended college at Iowa State University (201719) and graduated from Kansas State University in 2020 where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Communications and Journalism. After graduating, she moved to Maryville, MO, where she now raises show lambs with her husband, Adam and their son, Brue.

“I am beyond excited to begin this adventure at the North American Limousin Foundation as the Media and Activities Assistant. I’m excited to grow and expand my strengths and abilities as a working woman and mother in agriculture at NALF,” Thompson said.

“My hope is that Brooklyn and I will create a media department that is second-to-none as we continue to improve the breed and set standards for the beef industry. I am excited to have Brooklyn join our team,” said Mallory Blunier, NALF Director of Media and Activities.

Brooklyn’s first official day with NALF was March 11, 2024 .

New Tools To Improve Profit and Efficiency

Improving production and efficiency of feed utilization are key strategies to improve profitability and sustainability for beef producers. With feed costs continuing to rise and accounting for the vast majority of variable costs of cattle during finishing, selection for improved efficiency should be a part of every commercial cattleman’s breeding plan. New tools are available to assist commercial producers identify the most valuable and profitable bulls for use in their herds. The new tools include genetic predictions for dry matter intake, average daily gain and a new sub-index to predict differences in feed efficiency. A new Terminal Index (TI) that combines dry matter

intake, calving ease, growth and carcass merit also debuts. TI is a powerful new tool that utilizes the latest selection index modeling in iGENDEC to provide a prediction of a net merit for progeny sold on the rail.

Dry matter intake (DMI) is based on individual feed intake measures of cattle during confinement feeding. The trait is reported as the genetic difference in pounds of expected average daily dry matter intake of progeny. The trait is computed using both feed

intake records reported by seedstock producers and post-weaning growth data. DMI and post-weaning gain have a strong genetic relationship so information provided on the growth of an animal provides valuable information for predicting feed requirements. DMI is best utilized as an economically-relevant trait in construction of an endpoint aligned selection index as it represents a direct cost to production. Selection directly on DMI without regard to other traits is strongly discouraged.

Post-weaning average daily gain (ADG) has long been recognized as a key indicator for improved efficiency in beef cattle and is reported in differences in pounds of daily gain during the post-weaning period. Cattle that better gain have more favorable dilution of maintenance cost. Dilution of maintenance reflects the relative differences in energy an animal allocates to growth above maintenance costs. Animals with more favorable ADG typically allocate a lower percentage of intake to maintenance through either lower maintenance requirement, increased gross intake or a combination both. Selection for ADG independent of other traits will result in larger mature weights of cows and fed cattle.

A new feed efficiency (FE) sub-index has been created by the researchers at International Genetic Solutions, NALF’s genetic evaluation partner. The new FE sub-index puts differences in DMI and ADG in context. Without some measure of the relative input: output relationship it’s difficult to know if increased DMI or ADG has a positive effect on efficiency. The FE sub-index is an economic index that reports the difference in expected value of gain less the cost of feed to achieve that gain. FE is reported in dollars of marginal profit and will be particularly useful for providing context of the value of changes in DMI and ADG genetic potentials.

A new Terminal Index (TI) has been constructed to identify sires that produce the highest profit potential fed cattle. The new index was created using the most recent 10 years of USDA reported fed cattle and grid pricing data, K-State reported feedlot cattle performance and NALF data. The bio-economic index represents a leap forward in selection technology and was developed using the iGENDEC platform. The new TI index models the use of Limousin sires on Angus based cows will all calves marketed on a value-based carcass grid. The units reported represent expected differences in profit per mating.

Together, the new suite of feed efficiency-related genetic predictions and the new Terminal Index offered by the North American Limousin Foundation provide users of Limousin and Lim-Flex bulls unparalleled opportunity to drive improvement in feed efficiency, profit and sustainability in fed cattle production.

Ihope spring calving finds you well! It has been very enjoyable the last eight weeks watching bull sales online and seeing the incredible Limousin genetics throughout the country being offered. Whether you are looking for Limousin, Lim-Flex or Fullblood genetics, there is something for everyone that will add value and genetic variability to your herd.

I often receive calls regarding mating questions and the resulting percentages when using a certain bull on a specific female, or the trend in numbers of a whole herd with the selection of a particular bull. I utilize both the Progeny Calculator and the Genetic Trends section of Digital Beef often. Both are located in the Tools section of your Digital Beef member site and can help analyze both the direction of EPDs, as well as percentage makeup of different matings. If you have any questions or would like to further explore these, feel free to reach out anytime.

Another topic that comes up often is EPDs. While I could go on for pages breaking down EPDs individually and the science behind them,

the average breeder does not have the desire or time to review EPDs on an in-depth level. A helpful solution to this are the percentile ranks. Percentile ranks are listed on every animal on the third line of the animal detail screen.

Instead of having to analyze directly what a 14 calving ease direct or a 1.8 birth weight EPD numerically equates to, we can refer to percentile ranks. An animal with a BW EPD of -2.3 equates to a percentile rank of 4, meaning the animal has a lower BW EPD than 96% of the population. Both Purebred/Fullblood and Lim-Flex cattle have their own set of percentile ranks, so they are not compared against each other. Numerical EPDs and their corresponding percentile rank can be found on the Percentile Ranks chart in Digital Beef, under “For Your Information” on the left-hand menu.

Something very important to keep in mind, especially when evaluating the numbers of purebred cattle, is the classification of high

percentage animals. These animals will not be designated by NPM or NFM, but instead by NXM or NXF. The Limousin percentage of this group is not high enough to be considered a Purebred (87%), but from a mating standpoint, depending on the NALF percentage of the bulls and females used, will still result in a purebred animal. High percentage bulls can offer significant advantages in many aspects, while not necessarily having to sacrifice a purebred classification on a calf.

With respect to percentile ranks, high percentage cattle are compared against both Purebred, Fullblood and Lim-Flex cattle. There is no specific set of percentile ranks for high percentage cattle, so when evaluating them numerically, keep this in mind.

For example, CJSL Data Bank 6124D ET, a highly used 81% NXM, has a marbling EPD of 0.09 with a percentile rank of 50. This is compared against the entire herdbook. If a breeder is considering using him instead of an 87% bull, a 0.09 marbling EPD would be considerably higher (a percentile rank of around 15). His YW of 130, percentile rank 10, would be closer to a percentile rank of 2 when compared to the entire herdbook.

As breeders, no one knows the goals of your program and your customer base as well as you do. It is an exciting time to be in this breed, and I encourage you to reach out if you have any questions

It Takes A Village

You have heard the saying “it takes a village” and that is never more true than in this industry. Since starting college, I realized how much work every person in my family does.

You never understand how much your family does for you to succeed until you take a step back. Especially in an industry like this, it is definitely a team effort. From the parents and grandparents standing ringside at shows, to the parents or others in the barns everyday with you or when you can’t be there yourself, even the people you may not call mom or dad but are still always there for you in whatever way we may possibly need.

I used to think I needed to do everything by myself to make sure I was successful, but I quickly realized that was not the case, no one

person succeeds solely on their own. This applies to many aspects of life, sometimes you have to step back and ask for help. I am guilty of trying to do it all on my own but that normally results in feeling overwhelmed with all the things needing to be done and, in the end, nothing gets done perfectly because I am only one person. This would often lead to disappointment.

I have learned that letting others help lightens the load and makes life much more enjoyable. You have to be willing to accept help from others because in the end, it really does take a village.
