In the livestock industry, new advances are available in genetic selection. As cattle breeders, we have prided ourselves in making informed selections for breeding purposes on the basis of conformation and performance with a few statistics thrown in for good measure. It is possible for us to make the cattle look good on the outside, but what really matters is the quality of the inside. Breeders want to know what is inside the animal before the steaks are on the plate and the advent of genetic DNA markers has made this dream closer to a reality. Experts say there are as many differences within a breed as there are between different breeds. Consistency and proof of product would greatly enhan ce our marketing efforts. Do we all need to be alike and produce the same product? Absolu tely not. The purebred breeder is the cornerstone in the genetic process, whethe r you chose to breed full blood, purebred, or Lim-Flex—all have a place within the Limous in breed. Our priorities should be in the interest of providing the most desirab le sires for the existing cowherds in our area and to meet needs of that mainstream marke t. These purebred breeders also look to each other to develop diverse genetics to change and enhance their production.

This current issue of Limi-Gene catalog presents another tool to contemplate in the production of purebred cattle: the IGENITY profile. Other sorts of profiles are available, but for our purposes and considering NALF’s formal agreement with this company, we display this current DNA information in this form. On the whole, sire owners have been very progressive in considering this addition without having access to all results in advance of printing time. We would like to thank the bull owners for their continued cooperation in this learning process to advance the Limousin breed. Remember, IGENITY profile numbers are in the infancy stage, as bulls are added the more we will be able to analize and use the averages.
