In the livestock industry, new advances are available in genetic selection. As cattle breeders, we have prided ourselves in making informed selections for breeding purposes on the basis of conformation and performance with a few statistics thrown in for good measure. It is possible for us to make the cattle look good on the outside, but what really matters is the quality of the inside. Breeders want to know what is inside the animal before the steaks are on the plate and the advent of genetic DNA markers has made this dream closer to a reality. Experts say there are as many differences within a breed as there are between different breeds. Consistency and proof of product would greatly enhan ce our marketing efforts. Do we all need to be alike and produce the same product? Absolu tely not. The purebred breeder is the cornerstone in the genetic process, whethe r you chose to breed full blood, purebred, or Lim-Flex—all have a place within the Limous in breed. Our priorities should be in the interest of providing the most desirab le sires for the existing cowherds in our area and to meet needs of that mainstream marke t. These purebred breeders also look to each other to develop diverse genetics to change and enhance their production.

This current issue of Limi-Gene catalog presents another tool to contemplate in the production of purebred cattle: the IGENITY profile. Other sorts of profiles are available, but for our purposes and considering NALF’s formal agreement with this company, we display this current DNA information in this form. On the whole, sire owners have been very progressive in considering this addition without having access to all results in advance of printing time. We would like to thank the bull owners for their continued cooperation in this learning process to advance the Limousin breed. Remember, IGENITY profile numbers are in the infancy stage, as bulls are added the more we will be able to analize and use the averages. Igenty Profile: Results available at press time have been included. “P” or “Pending” results will be available at www.limigene.com. F94L results labeled as 0 = no markers, 1 = carrier and 2 = homozygous for the F94L marker.

Homozygous Polled-Progeny: Bull owner has declared that sire has sired all polled calves from matings of a significant number of horned females. Homozygous Polled-DNA: Bull has been DNA tested by MMI Labs and believed to have over 95% chance of being homozygous polled. Homozygous Black-Progeny: Bull owner has declared that sire has sired all black calves from matings of a significant number of red females. Homozygous Black-DNA: Bull has been DNA tested for coat color.

One obvious factor which determines degree of success of AI is the quality of the semen used. Much has been learned about factors affecting semen quality and methods of evaluation and means of maintaining quality through lengthy storage. The commercial AI industry has a tremendous responsibility to sell only high quality semen. To maximize conception rate, high quality semen must be placed in the cow’s reproductive tract. Semen quality at the time of breeding is dependent on the quality of semen at the time it was purchased, storage conditions on the farm, thawing procedures and handling techniques. When semen is purchased from LIMI-Gene, quality at the time of purchase is assured by strict quality control procedures. However, semen purchased from other sources may be of lower quality due to lack of testing, no quality procedures, improper handling and (or) storage and should be considered a possible cause of low conception rates.

Shipping Information • Orders placed at least five shipping days in advance of your insemination date eliminates both delays and added expense. Generally, business day orders placed by the noon hour can be shipped UPS with the following business day counted as the first shipping day. (Check the map for your location and number of days). • Next day, Second Day and Third Day Select are also available at addition charges from UPS. Othre methods of shipping are available upon request. • Discounts apply on orders over $200, $1000, volume purchases and for new customers. • Your semen order will arrive in a Dry Vapor shipping tank. It is equipped with an absorbent material to hold the liquid nitrogen which is not visible. Observe the metal seal which insures the tank has remained closed during transport. A small amount of vapor should be seen upon opening the tank.

• Semen should be removed as soon as possible. The empty tank should be closed, fastened and returned to the spot where the “drop off” delivery was made. UPS “pick up” service will be automatic within 2-4 days as directed by a LimiGene issued “call tag”. • A packing slip is included with your order confirming and identifying the contents of the shipper. Instructions, along with sealing bands are included for the return of the tank.
