A unit of semen is a live product, therefore it is important that care be taken in semen storage and handling. Frozen semen is a living and vital part of your herd and must be cared for accordingly. Semen is frozen and stored in liquid nitrogen, which reduces metabolic activity making long term storage possible. Anything that we do to the semen to jeopardize this low temperature will damage the semen. The following are a few tips for proper semen storage. 1. Store your semen in a liquid nitrogen tank and never let the level of the liquid nitrogen go below two inches. Monitor liquid nitrogen use weekly in your tank to detect early warning signs of a bad tank. Frost on the outside of the tank indicates your tank is damaged and may need to be replaced. 2. Store your tank in a protected area away from children and livestock. Your best insurance for genetic progress is a good, well cared for tank. 3. Know where you can find an emergency source of nitrogen and have an emergency plan for semen storage if your tank is defective. 4. Keep a good written inventory of your tank to reduce excessive handling. Every time a cane of semen is handled there is a potential for damage. Do not mix different bulls in the same cane or in the same goblet. 5. When transferring semen avoid doing it in direct sunlight and have the tanks side by side making the transfer in less than three seconds. Warming up the semen allowing it to refreeze causes damage. 6. When removing a unit of semen, keep the cane 3-4 inches below the top of the neck tube. Higher in the neck tube temperatures are greater than minus 100 degrees and damage will occur. After securing the straw, allow the canes to drop back into the canister. 7. When you thaw semen, make sure you have an accurate thermometer and keep your water bath at 95 degrees F. Temperatures either higher or lower than this can reduce the quality of the semen. 8. Thaw semen for a minimum of 30-40 seconds. Remember that if any delays occur, the semen is safer in the water bath than a gun where temperature shock can occur. Attempt to use the semen within 15 minutes of thawing. 9. After thawing the semen check for proper identification on the straw. Reading the straw after insemination only proves that you have used the wrong bull. 10. Load your insemination gun in a protected area. Rubbing the gun with a paper towel helps reduce cold shock when you load the straw in the gun. Keep the gun protected by wrapping it in a clean paper towel. 11. Follow the recommended insemination procedures. 12. Keep accurate records of insemination, heat periods and calving dates. All of these are simple procedures, but if they are not followed correctly, you can lose all of the advantages that breeding artificially provides.

Homozygous Polled: A bull with this trait will only sire polled calves, even when bred to horned cows. Homozygous Black: A bull with this traint will only sire black calves, even when bred to mixed color cows. (Test) - Indicates the result was made through DNA testing. Dear Fellow Limousin Breeders and Commercial Ranchers, It is with great excitement that I write my first correspondence in the Limi-Gene Sire Directory! Limi-Gene, Inc. is a storied firm within the Limousin breed and has always operated on the business principles of honesty, integrity, and a genuine willingness to help the customer. I am thrilled to be associated with such a first-class program and eager to begin working on innovative ways to advance the breed. First, I’d like to introduce myself to those I have not yet met. My family, Peterson Limousin Farms, has raised Limousin cattle in Wisconsin for over 30 years. I am an alumnus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison where I studied Animal Sciences and Agricultural Journalism. In December 2008, I founded the website – www. limousinlive.com. LimousinLive began with the vision of serving as an online “hub” of information regarding the Limousin breed. In the first year, LimousinLive received over 35,000 visits and nearly 30,000 videos have been watched. This spring alone, 26 sale catalogs have been viewed over 26,000 times. I am also a contributing editor for Working Ranch Magazine – a farm and ranch publication that goes out to 55,000 of the largest U.S. cattle ranches and feedlots. I am passionate about this special breed of cattle and believe in what it brings to the beef industry! Today’s industry is filled with tremendous promise and opportunity. Technology is expanding our knowledge about the product we raise and the means by which we receive it. Never before have we had this much access to information about the beef product we work so hard to produce. DNA markers, Residual Feed Intake (RFI) data, genomic-enhanced EPDs, etc. – these are all emerging technologies gaining momentum in the industry. Are these tools fool-proof? No. Science never has been and never will be. They are, however, resources that allow us to create a better, more consistent product. This year’s sire directory has a slightly different feel to it. As a breed, we need to continue to place selection emphasis on growth, grade, docility, and fertility. We’ve highlighted sires that have above-average EPDs in multiple traits. Selecting bulls with a balanced set of above-average EPDs is the surest way to significant genetic progress. We’ve again attempted to include as much information regarding these bulls as possible. Igenity & DNA Igenity Profile: “P” or “Pending” results will be available at www.limigene.com. Higher scores are not necessarily better – it just means that the animal has the potential for more of that trait. For the most informed decisions use IGENITY profiles in conjunction with other selection and management tools like confirmation and EPDs. Select the scores which are best for your animals,your operation and your marketing options.

DG = Average Daily Gain- genetic potential for rate of gain. TN = Tenderness - Represents an animal’s genetic potention for tenderness, “10” being the most tender. MB = Marbling Score - USDA Choice has minimum marbling requirements. Marbling points indicate how much intramuscular fat is present in the carcass and thus propensity to make the Choice grade. CH = Quality Grade - Higher scores are more likely to fit into prime grades. The Igenity profile reflects the percent grade. YG = Yield Grade - Lean yield is an estimation of the percentage of the carcass that is red meat - this is not dressing per-

centage. Lower Igenity scores reflect a higher percent of red meat yield. Higher Igenity scores reflect lower red meat yield. FT =Fat Thickness - Lower Igenity profiles scores indicate less external fat, while higher scores reflect more external fat. RE = Rib eye Area - Lower Igenity profile scores reflect smaller rib eye areas, with higher scores reflecting larger rib eye areas.

PG = Heifer Pregnancy Rate ST = Stayability - Chance a heifer will stay in the herd until 6 years old. CE = Calving Ease DC = Docility - Higher score indicates more acceptable behavior. F94L = Myostatin - results labeled 0 = no markers, 1 = carrier and 2 = homozygous for the F94L marker. RFI = Residual Feed Intake - Net feed efficiency is defined as the difference between an animal’s actual feed intake and its expected feed requirements for maintenance adn growth have been met. Efficient animals eat less than expected and have a negative or low RFI, while inefficient animals eat more than expected and have apositive or high RFI.

IGENITY® Partners with North American Limousin Foundation (NALF) Ground-breaking agreement takes adoption of DNA technology to new level

In late 2008, NALF entered into a distribution agreement with Merial to create the infrastructure needed for inclusion of the comprehensive IGENITY® profile and genotypes for myostatin F94L into NALF’s performance program. The myostatin F94L allele is uniquely prevalent in Limousin cattle and has significant favorable effects on ribeye area, fat thickness, yield grade, retail product yield, tenderness and presumably the efficiency with which feed is converted to case-ready, retail product. Based on preliminary data, F94L appears to have slightly adverse but manageable effects on birth weight, calving ease direct, milk production, scrotal circumference and marbling. Multiple trait selection using F94L genotypes and EPDs for other traits can be used to exploit the benefits without the negligible side-effects. Many of the bulls in this 2009 Limi-Gene Sire Directory also have IGENITY® profile scores provided. The scores for the various traits range from 1 to 10 and are associated with the sum of the effects of multiple DNA markers. Similar to EPDs, the scores and related effects are breeding values (BV = 2 X EPD) that serve to rank and predict genetic differences among animals. Profile scores and their effects are provided in the table below. Generally, the profile scores are most informative for traits that are not evaluated by EPDs and for animals with EPDs that have low or moderate accuracy. As technology advances, results from DNA tests will be integrated into EPDs when available for respective traits, providing enhanced accuracy. Combining all sources of information (pedigree, performance and genomic) for a given trait into EPDs and indexes will maximize accuracy and result in the least ambiguous and most reliable selection decisions.
