Summer is past and forage conditions are improved for cattle production in many parts of the country. The latest pasture and range conditions indicate that overall range and pasture conditions in the U.S. are 20% poor and very poor compared to 31% last year and an average of 33.6% for this date from 2008 to 2012. Despite the difficulty of relieving drought in the summer, pasture and range conditions improved somewhat through the heat of the summer, aided in part by a cooler than average summer. In the latest Drought Monitor, the percent of the U.S. that has no drought is 52%, the same as it was the week of May 20, 2014. However, the percent of the U.S. with D2-D4 (severe to exceptional) drought conditions was 21.6% compared to 28.3 in May. Marginal drought conditions remain in many regions but generally less severe compared to May. The exception to this general assessment is the far West including California, Nevada and parts of Oregon and Idaho where drought conditions continue very extreme. In fact, significant reduction in D3 and D4 drought conditions in much of the central and southern Plains was offset by increases
in those categories in California and Nevada, thereby masking the improvement in the middle of the country in the Drought Monitor percentages. Range and pasture conditions are improved with lower percentages of poor and very poor condition in most all regions compared to this time last year. Despite the deteriorating conditions in the far West, the percent of pasture and
range in poor and very poor condition in the eight western states is 35.9% currently compared to 56.5% last year. The Great Plains region (including Colorado, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, North and South Dakota, and Wyoming) has 15.1% poor and very poor compared to 28.6% one year ago. The Southern Plains (Oklahoma and Texas)

currently have 25.5% of pastures and ranges in poor or very poor condition compared to 33.5% last year. The eight states in the Corn Belt region have 13.4% poor and very poor conditions, down from 26.3% from one year ago. Only the southeast region has worse conditions compared to last year with 13.1% of pastures rated poor or very poor compared to 3.3% last year. The August USDA Crop Production report included estimates for 2014 hay production. Alfalfa hay production is forecast to be up 10.5% from one year ago, with increases in both harvested acreage and estimated yield contributing to the increase. Other hay is forecast to be down 1.5%, with a 2.6% decrease in harvested acres and yield virtually unchanged from last year. Other hay production was likely decreased by early dry conditions in some regions that delayed hay harvest. In the Southern Plains there are decent prospects for winter wheat grazing this fall and winter. Current soil moisture conditions are
adequate but tenuous. Summer heat resulted in dry topsoil conditions in some areas. Much of the wheat ground is ready for planting in western Oklahoma, with some just waiting for a rain. Wheat planted in early-to mid-September will need timely follow-up moisture to continue growing. Overall, it appears that some recovery of pasture, range and hay production has taken place in many regions. The process will need to continue for many months in some areas. There will likely be some fall stocker cattle demand in addition to strong feedlot demand for feeder cattle. Heifer retention is likely to accelerate this fall and herd rebuilding is likely beginning this year. The fact that heifer slaughter is down 8.6% for the year to date and beef cow slaughter is down 17.4% so far this year, are both indications of herd expansion. Generally better forage conditions will let the cattle industry begin to respond to market signals by doing what producers want to do rather than what Mother Nature is forcing them to do.

Herman Symens of Sisseton, South Dakota has been selected as the newest inductee into the North American Limousin Foundation “Hall of Fame”. The induction ceremony will be held Sunday evening, January 11, 2015 at the Double Tree Hotel in Denver, Colorado. This will take place in conjunction with the National Western Stock Show. Everyone is invited to this special event. If you would like to contribute to the two bronze sculptures and a scholarship that will be established to commemorate the tribute to Herman, donations can be sent to any member of the committee: Tom Vaughn, Jerry Effertz, Bob Yackley or Dean Summerbell. Thank you for your support of this worthy endeavor! In addition, a memory book is being put together and we are asking that letters, pictures or other memorabilia be sent to Tom Vaughn. This will be presented to Herman at the induction ceremony. Herman and Judy Symens have been an integral part of the
Limousin breed in the United States and Canada since the early 1970’s. They have impacted the Limousin industry in many ways and have always considered the breed first in their commitment to the beef industry. Their tireless support, generosity, and service to the Limousin breed has no equal. We look forward to seeing a large contingent of Limousin enthusiasts at this special ceremony January 11, 2015. Peterson Limousin Hot Dogs Named Best of MN A panel of food critics from the Star Tribune recently awarded Japanese restaurant Kyatchi with the venerable title of Best Hot Dog Minnesota 2014. Inside the bun sits a 2.5 ounce Peterson Limousin Beef uncured weiner. The frank, which features a snappy casing, has won over many diners with its bold flavor and finger-licking juiciness. Lead food critic Rick Nelson proclaimed, “The snappy-skinned sausages have a lot more umph than your average ball park frank.” Chef Hide Tozawa dresses the dogs a number of ways. One hot dog features house-made sweet curried slaw and another has umami-laden Kewpie mayonnaise. All toppings receive inspiration from Tozawa’s

Tips for Buying Beef at the Store * Choose beef with a bright cherry-red color (vacuum-packaged beef has a darker, purplish-red color).
* Look for beef that is firm to the touch, not soft. * Make sure the package is cold and has no holes or tears.
* Purchase beef before the sell-by date. * Select beef just before checking out.
The reserve grand champion heifer was LG Annika, a daughter of Little’s Black Powder exhibited by Hunter Schmidt.

Economic Value of Managing Genetics
Genetic management can be used to capture added value through the supply chain, explained Lisa Elliott, Assistant Professor & SDSU Extension Commodity Marketing Specialist. “Management tools and protocols should be coupled with complimentary organizational arrangements and marker differentiation mechanisms in order to maximize value capture from the investment,” Elliott said. Elliott identified three key components to managing beef genetics: • Genetic management • Organization design • Marker differentiation mechanisms. The main area discussed was genetic management, what it means and how producers can use it to increase their profitability. What does genetic management mean to producers? Elliott said
genetic management is identifying and employing complementary organization arrangements and market differentiation that reduces transaction costs and perhaps most importantly, increase premiums to producers. Vertical integration, Elliott explained, could limit the transaction costs; however, it can also increase other costs in the beef supply chain due to differences between firms. Added value from genetic management can occur from two different sources: • Value added premiums for higher quality beef products • Improved segregation of beef production that leads to increases in consistency of products and quality yields.
Clason Won Supreme Female Banner at Nebraska State Fair Junior Show The Nebraska Limousin Show, held August 27, 2014 in Grand Island, was small in numbers but high in quality. The grand champion female in the Open Show, a cow/calf pair exhibited by Korynn Clason of Beaver City, NE, went on to be named Supreme Champion in the All-Breeds Junior Show and Reserve Supreme Champion in the Supreme Drive over all breeds shown in the various open shows.
The reserve grand champion Limousin female was AUTO Amario 228A, a 3/2/13 daughter of AUTO Cruz exhibited by Caitlyn Ochsner of Kersey, CO.

Deb Vorthmann Newest Member of The Showtimes “Hall of Fame” Deb Vorthmann of Silver City, Iowa is the newest member of The Showtimes “Hall of Fame”. She was featured in the September/ October issue of the magazine. The Showtimes began the “Hall of Fame” in 2009 and have included new inductees with each issue. To be inducted, individuals must achieve something great in the livestock industry. They may be an exhibitor, judge, show official or someone who makes a great impression. Deb, daughter of Roger and Ann Vorthmann, grew up on a century farm in the rolling hills of southwest Iowa near Treynor. The family raises corn, soybeans, and alfalfa along with their Limousin herd of cattle. For the past 12 years they have held a private treaty sale the last Saturday of September. She began showing in 4-H when she was ten years old. Her Dad did the clipping at that time. Deb showed at her first National Junior Limousin Show in 1988 in Des Moines and has been to every national show since with the exception of one year. Her first show heifer, Amarillo, was purchased at the Iowa Beef Expo. As the saying goes, “the rest is
history”. Deb went on to have had the honor of raising and exhibiting several Bred-and-Owned champions at the NALJA show as well as the NWSS. Her goal when attending the shows was to find the best presented show cattle and watch them being clipped and fitted. Then she would practice what she saw. After much practice, Deb’s work is now near perfection and she is hired across the country to fit cattle for other breeders. In 2002 she was honored to have been selected as the Limousin “Herdsman of the Year” at the NWSS in Denver. Deb is a beef leader for the 4-H club that she was in as a child. She also helps put on a showmanship clinic at the county fair. She is a professor for Stock Show U, where she has the opportunity to share her knowledge with young exhibitors.

Reducing the Risk of Calf Scours in Fall-Calving Herds Fall calving has several advantages. One of the least discussed advantages to fall-calving is the reduction of risk to an outbreak of scours. Neonatal calf diarrhea (commonly called “calf scours”) is one of the most costly disease entities in the beef cattle business. Fall-calving herds have the help of the hot, late summer sunshine to reduce the buildup and spread of the pathogens that cause calf diarrhea. Whether you have spring or fall-calving cows (or both) there are some key management procedures that will reduce the likelihood of a scours outbreak in your calves. These procedures are meant to decrease the pathogen exposure to the newborn calf. • Calve in clean and dry areas. • Calve heifers earlier than the cow herd. • Avoid congregating. • Avoid hay feeding in calving pastures by setting aside pastures during the summer to stockpile forage for utilization during calving time.
• Move pairs to larger pastures promptly. • If hay is fed, use hay feeders and move feeders frequently. • Use biosecurity and biocontainment measures for all herd additions. • Isolate, quarantine, and perform appropriate tests on all herd additions. • Introduce pregnant herd additions at least 30 days prior to the start of calving season. This will allow time for exposure to new pathogens, antibody development and secretion of antibodies into the colostrum. • Do not add calves to the herd until the youngest calf in the herd is over 30 days of age. Buying a calf at a livestock auction or from a dairy for a cow that has lost a calf can introduce diseases that your herd may not have immunity against. Isolation and treatment: • Remove sick calves from the herd immediately. One sick calf can produce overwhelming pathogen exposure by shedding
e v o L n i F all
as many as 100 million bacteria or viruses per milliliter of feces (500 million bacteria and or viruses per teaspoon of feces). • Visit with your local large animal veterinarian to determine best treatment options for the pathogens affecting your calves.
• Treating the sick calves should occur after handling the well calves. Clean and disinfect all equipment. Clothing, boots, gloves, etc. worn while treating sick calves should not be worn when handling well calves.

Prepare for a Successful Spring Calving Season Someone once said, “Success occurs when Opportunity meets with Preparation.” Planning for next spring’s calving season can help increase the chances of success. There are several steps that would be good to conduct in November or December to ensure success in February, March, and April, according to an Oklahoma State University Extension news release. • Equipment: Before calving season starts, do a walk-through of pens, chutes and calving stalls. Make sure all are clean, dry, strong, safe and functioning correctly. • Protocol: Before calving season starts, develop a plan of what to do, when to do it, who to call for help (along with phone numbers), and how to know when you need help. Make sure all family members or helpers are familiar with the plan. It may help to write it out and post copies in convenient places.
Talk to the local veterinarian about the protocol and incorporate his/her suggestions. Your veterinarian will be a lot more helpful when you have an emergency if you have talked a few times during regular hours. • Supplies: Always have the following: disposable obstetrical sleeves, non-irritant antiseptic, lubricant, obstetrical chains (60 inches and/or two 30 inches chains), two obstetrical handles, mechanical calf pullers and injectable antibiotics. Many lubricants have been used and one of the best lubricants is probably the simplest – non-detergent soap and warm water. Do not forget the simple things like a good flashlight with extra batteries and some old towels or a roll of paper towels. It may be helpful for you to have all these things and other items you may want to include packed into a bucket to make up an obstetrical kit so you can grab everything at once.
