Few of us realise that when Thomas Edison invented the electrical light bulb just over 100 years ago, he changed the world by giving us instant control over our environment and the freedom to work, play, and learn virtually anywhere and anytime. While Edison’s invention was a milestone in our history, continued innovation has resulted in lighting components that are far more effective, efficient and economical than the basic tungsten filament bulb, yet Edison’s most famous invention still remains the most widely used lighting source today. Lighting design is undoubtedly one of the few industries where there appears to be unlimited potential for transformation, growth and creative design solutions. Until recently, lighting was viewed as a mere necessity; a design component that plays an essential role in our ability to perceive our environment and the space we occupy. While this is true, it is now widely understood that the quality of lighting can also affect our health and safety, impact our mood and even influence the way we behave within certain spaces. Quality lighting systems can enrich the quality of our lives, but retrospective fitting presents many difficulties so the lighting scheme must be envisioned, designed and implemented during the earliest phases of building design. This is the challenge and the role of the lighting designer! Lighting design is ordinarily a highly technical and specialised subject, combining electrical knowledge and engineering with design skills. However, this is the first course of its kind to offer training specifically for interior/exterior lighting design, and it will teach you how to identify, recreate and then manipulate the effects of lighting in a positive manner so that you can design successful lighting schemes for clients again and again. Understanding Light Light is not what we see but what we see by, yet this abstract and intangible design component clearly has a significant influence on our perception of our environment and whether or not our visual experience is pleasant or not. How is it that something as ethereal as light can impact us so significantly and more importantly perhaps, how can it be adjusted and manipulated to enhance our experiences so that we can reap the benefits? The answer lies in a basic understanding of what exactly light is and how we perceive it. Ordinarily lighting theory can be a highly technical and complex subject, but in this course the essentials are explained in everyday language with clear examples to illustrate the relevant points for you as a Lighting Designer. Lighting Effects & How to Achieve Them Lighting can be skilfully used to make a space appear smaller or larger, and it can highlight decorative details and draw attention away from unwanted areas. While different bulbs can drastically affect the way colour appears, the type of fittings will also determine how light is dispersed within a room and whether the result is a warm glow or an uncomfortable glare. In short, effective lighting can create a variety of moods and atmospheres that can be immediately changed with the flick of a switch, and in this context it’s easy to understand how a lighting scheme can make or break an interior design… Just as we have many moods and numerous tasks to perform throughout the course of a normal day, our lighting requirements can change from one moment to the next. These are the most commonly recognised and critical factors in designing any lighting scheme, but they are still just some of the details to consider when you are designing a lighting system for maximum impact. Lamps & Control Systems The convenience of turning off the main light without getting out of bed is a relatively simple one, but it is just one of those little details that makes life more comfortable on an everyday basis. Similarly, the ability to turn on all the lamps in a room with the flick of a single switch is preferable to switching on each lamp individually. While these examples may be simple, they illustrate how a little thought and planning can increase our comfort significantly, yet these details must be considered at the outset… A proper lighting design will take into account how the occupants of a building will live and function within a space, and all the components of that design will be carefully selected to create a lighting system that is as pleasing to operate as it would be to live in. Designing a lighting system for ease of use is not rocket science, it simply requires knowledge of the types of switches and control systems available, along with careful consideration as to how your clients will interact with their environment. Once you learn about the essential components of a lighting system, then you can combine them to create unique lighting systems to cater for your clients individual requirements. Designing a Lighting System Successful lighting designers are confident in their designs and they avoid expensive mistakes because they take the time to identify what their client requires and then develop a design accordingly. Before a lighting designer proposes a lighting scheme they will take into account technical aspects of the required light source along with the clients brief. Award – The Limperts Academy of Design Professional Certificate in Lighting Design (Level 4 – Accredited by Edexcel)
Amount of Study – This Professional Certificate course is delivered in the format of 5 lessons, each of which is followed by an assignment in which you will apply your new skills and knowledge. On completion of all these assignments, you will be asked to complete a Final Project that enables you to demonstrate your ability by designing a lighting scheme for a residential client and communicating your ideas professionally with appropriate drawings and specifications.
Method of Assessment – All assessments are based on completed assignments and project work. Each assignment is awarded a Pass, Merit or Distinction grade and the full grading criteria are explained in detail in the student handbook that accompanies this course. In brief, each lesson is followed by an assignment and these have been deliberately structured to enable you to learn and apply your new skills in the context within which they will be used in a professional setting. Each lesson and assignment builds on previous accomplishments so that you progressively build your knowledge and skillset. At the end of the course, the Final Project provides a way for you to demonstrate how successfully you have integrated all the skills and knowledge acquired throughout the course. With this method of teaching and assessment you will build a portfolio of work and gain confidence in your ability. All our students find this approach extremely valuable.
On average, a single assignment requires 10-12 hours study time, while the final project requires an average of 25-30 hours work. This is a valuable award and clearly it requires commitment to achieve what is required. However, this is a creative and enjoyable subject and “study” in the conventional sense does not apply to these assignments. Committing approximately 4-5 hours per week consistently would enable you to complete the course within the 6 month period. All the coursework is very practical and while students will admit that it takes commitment, they all stress the enjoyment factor and sense of pride and achievement in their work.
Entry Requirements – No previous experience is necessary to complete this course successfully, and there is no prerequisite except for a genuine interest in the subject and an ability to read and write clearly. (Please note that special arrangements can be made for people with learning disabilities. Contact us for further information if required.) We don’t believe in excluding people, and we offer excellent training and qualifications to anyone who is willing to make the commitment that a course of this nature requires. We are confident that if you have a genuine interest and desire to learn, then we will provide you with the best means to achieve that goal through this program of study.
Materials Required – The student pack provided by Limperts Academy of Design contains all the information and instruction necessary to complete this course successfully, while students will obviously need to purchase standard stationery items to complete their assignments. Access to a computer is not necessary, however it will enable you to present written work to a higher standard and to access a wealth of invaluable resources through the internet, including our password protected student website.
Course Fees – The course fees are detailed in our current price list and instalment options are also available. All registration fees, tuition and exam fees are included within the course price and we stress that there are no hidden extras. Students must cover the cost of posting assignments to us for grading, and Limperts Academy of Design will cover the cost of return postage for assignments. Some students prefer to use a courier service to send in their Final Project, and this additional expense must be covered by the student.
Length of Course – Students are permitted up to 6 months to complete the program. Time extensions are available if necessary and this course may also be deferred in special circumstances (such as illness).

Direct Lighting When a light source shines directly into a space, the kind of lighting is called direct lighting. This kind of light is usually sharp, has a smooth texture. If not used well can cause glare. Gives out a lot of light. It is great for focused accent lighting, for example, to highlight a sculpture in a room, or light up a show window. It brings out a sense of energy into a space because of thesharp clean natureof light.
Indirect Lighting Lighting by means of luminaries such that almost none of the light emittedfrom the lamp reaches the workingplane directlyand is instead reflectedeither off the luminaire itself or some reflective surfaces close by. Indirect light fixturesdistribute 90 to 100 percent of the light upward. The ceiling and upper walls must be clean and highly reflective to allow the light to reach the work area. They provide the most even illumination of all the types of fixtures and the least direct glare. However, using only indirect lighting can lead to ceilings with too much light and create a comparatively gloomy effect underneath. If the beam of light is reflected off the surface of the luminare itself, it is imperative that the luminare does not gather dust otherwise it will decrease the total output of light substantially .
There are 4 basic ways in which light is dispersed from a luminary. This effects the form of the light emitted as well as influences factors of glare, light intensity etc. If the light falls on a smooth reflective surface, it retains its smooth texture, but may add to the existing glare in the room

Diffused lighting Lighting by means of luminaries such that the light passes through a translucent surface is called Diffused Lighting. Such type of lighting is soft and glare free. However, the total light output of the lamp always compromised to the lesser or greater degree. Such luminaires are usually used for ambient lighting or external landscape lighting where high intensity lighting is not required.
If the light falls on a rough or textured surface, it gets dispersed in different directions and hence it looses its sharp form.

Ambient Light Ambient light is all around us, is not from an obvious source - the rays have light have bounced arou nd so much that objects are evenly lit from all sides, and is so soft that it creates hardly any shadow. Ambient lighting is essential for the general comfort and safety of a work space. But used in isolation it can make a space boring and kill any play of light and shadow. Therefore it should almost always be used in combination with other types of lights. Ambient light luminaires should be dimmable so that they can lend themselves to different moods during different part of the day.
Luminaire groups such as spotlights, directional downlights, directional recessed floor luminaries and task lights all contribute to accent lighting Task Light Task lights emit their light downwards onto a work surface where a specific task such as read ing, cooking, studying, washing is to be carried out. As with accent light, it is highly directional and focused over a small area. The source of the light should be hidden with a shade to prevent glare. They are offered with narrow-beam or wide- beam light distribution. They should be rotatable and tiltable to ovoid glare on the task surface. Task lighting maximizes visibility for task work while saving energy by allowing ambient light levels to be lower. Task lighting can easily be controlled with occupancy sensor systems. In this way, when no one is in the work area, task lights, computer monitors and other nonessential equipment can be turned off, thereby cutting down on enery requirements

Direct -indirect light fixtures distribute light equally upward and downward. They reflect light off the ceiling and other room surfaces. Little light is emitted horizontally meaning direct glare is often reduced.

Most common luminaire groups for ambient lighting are pendants, but low- voltage downlights are also commonly used in office spaces for ambient light Accent Light Accent light is very directional and focused over a small area. It enables good appreciation of form and surface structure. The focused light produces pronounced shadows and good modelling ability, as well as brilliance.

HIGH INTENSITY DISCHARGE LAMPS Gas -discharge lamps offer long life and high light efficiency, but a re more complica ted to manufacture, and they require electronics to providethecorrectcurrentflowthroughthegas.
High Intensity Discharge or "HID" is the term commonly used to designate four distinct types of lamps. They are high pressure sodium, low p r e s s ur e s od ium , m e ta l h a lid e , a n d mercury vapor . Each requiresa fewminutes(one to seven) to come up to full output.Also, if power to the lamp is lost or turnedoff, the arc tubemustcool to a given temperature before the arc can be restruck and light produced. Up to seven minutes(for mercuryvapor lamps) may be required These lamps generate light by sending an electrical discharge throughan ionized gas. The character of the gas discharge critically depends on the frequency or modulation of the current. Typically, such lamps use a noble gas (argon, neon, krypton and xenon)or a mixtureof thesegases. Most lamps are filled with additional materials, like mercury, sodium, and/or metal halides. In operation the gas is ionized, and free electrons, accelerated by the electrical field in thetube, collide withgas and metal atoms. Some electrons circling around the gas and metal atoms are excitedbythesecollisions, bringing them to a higher energy state. When the electron falls back to its original state, it emits a photon, resulting in visible light or ultraviolet radiation. Ultravioletradiation is convertedto visible lightby a fluorescentcoating on the inside of the lamp's glass surface for some lamp types.The fluorescentlamp is 8 perhaps thebestknowngas-discharge lamp.

My name is Nabeel Hassan Ali, I am 26 years of age and I come from Sitra in Bahrain. After gaining my qualifications I started work as an Electrical Engineer with a prestigious consulting company in Bahrain.
Before signing up for the course with Limperts Academy of Design I was a project manager in the construction industry, with a degree in Civil Engineering.
Part of my role here led me to look into lighting design and I needed to find a formal qualification to be able to meet the requirements of my work. I searched on the internet and came across Limperts Academy of Design and found out more about their Lighting Design Certificate.
Whilst I had always had a keen interest in design generally, it was not until I bought my first house that I really developed an interest in design.

Home Study - It’s about time Limperts Academy of Design specialises in Home Study training programs, so you can enjoy freedom and flexibility with the peace of mind that you will have all the support and encouragement you need to complete your course successfully. Choosing Home Study simply means that no matter who or where you are, and no matter what amount of free time you have, you can study your area of interest at a time and pace to suit you; rather than committing to a full-time or part-time schedule of study at a college, the course material is delivered directly to you. Upon registration, you will be sent our detailed course manuals, which are powerful learning tools that include all the practical and technical information you need, with language and illustrations that are easy to understand and free from unnecessary jargon. You will also be assigned a personal tutor who will review all of your assignments, providing you with detailed feedback and guidance. Your tutor will be available to offer help and support whenever you need them and you can contact them directly by phone, fax or email. Many of our Home Study courses are also accompanied by audio programs on CD, which have been designed to motivate you and give you the benefits of a “classroom” lesson. Detailed feedback sheets & progress reports – with each assignment you complete you will receive a detailed feedback sheet highlighting your strengths and weaknesses and offering advice on how you can continue to improve. If your grades are low then you will be told exactly what you need to do to improve, and when your grades are high you will be told how and why you’ve achieved them. We believe it’s important for you to know how your work compares to what will be expected in the professional design industry, so that when you are ready you can venture into the design world with ability AND confidence!
Audio CD’s – many of our courses are accompanied by audio CD’s in which you will be personally guided by Maria Flynn through key aspects of the program. The Academy has formed an alliance with Edexcel International who are one of the largest and most respected validating bodies in the world, with centres in over 100 countries and representatives on every continent. Limperts Academy of Design Higher National Diploma (HND) programs & Professional Certificate programs are validated by Edexcel International. Courses accredited by Edexcel are amongst the most sought after qualifications and they are recognised and respected by employers and higher education institutions around the world. The Professional Certificate award is a level 4 qualification with 120 associated learning hours.

Your Questions Answered Why do all our courses have deadlines? Research has repeatedly shown that there is a significantly higher rate of successful completion on courses where students are given a deadline versus when they are allowed unlimited time. Our course deadlines are very generous and allow maximum flexibility, which is one of the major reasons why people choose home study. In addition to this, they provide the additional motivation you may need to schedule regular time for course work, so that you can build momentum and become actively engaged in the course process. If you want to really learn valuable new skills and knowledge that can change the direction of your future, then you have to be prepared to put aside a little time each week. At the end of each course description in this prospectus, we provide details of how much time you should expect to set aside. How quickly will I receive my course materials? All courses are dispatched on the last Friday of each calendar month. We use a courier service and delivery should not take longer than 2-3 days unless you are in a particularly remote area. Please allow up to one week for delivery as delays can occur for a number of reasons. If you would like to receive your course materials sooner, you may prefer to download our electronic version and save the cost of postage and packaging. How quickly will I receive feedback from my tutor? All assignments are graded and returned within one week at most, from the time we receive your assignment at our office. Your assignment will be returned to you with a detailed feedback sheet, indicating your strengths and weaknesses. Feedback sheets are e-mailed to overseas students to speed up the process and special arrangements are also in place for email in assignments on some courses. What happens if I fail? Each course assignment is returned to you with detailed feedback to tell you exactly what you what your strengths and weaknesses are so that you can continually improve your work to meet the standards required. If any of your course assignments are below standard, they will be returned to you by your tutor and you will be asked to re-submit the assignment, taking on board the tutor’s comments and feedback.

This doesn’t happen often, but even so, it’s all part of the learning process and that is what any course is essentially all about. Is there an exam? Design is unlike traditional academic subjects and examinations of the conventional kind are not appropriate for testing these types of skills and knowledge. On completion of all course assignments, you will be given a Final Project that incorporates everything you will have learned throughout the course into one complete assignment. The project question will be a typical job requirement or client brief, so that you gain experience and are confident in your ability and can apply your knowledge in practical scenarios. You must pass both the coursework AND the Final Project in order to receive your award and the grading criteria are explained in detail in the student handbook that accompanies each course. By the time you have completed the coursework, you should know what is expected in the Final Project, and the grades you will have been receiving on your coursework will give you a strong indication of the final grade you are most likely to receive. At that point, it is very unlikely that you will fail to achieve the standard required on the Final Project. In the event that your project does fail, you will be given the opportunity to resubmit once for a nominal fee. Who will be my tutor? All our tutors are practising designers and professionals who are actively working in the industry, who teach on a part-time basis. When you send in your first assignment, you will receive details of the tutor who has been assigned to you and how you can contact them. Are there any additional costs not included within the course fee? Our course fees represent excellent value for money, and everything is included in the price, we stress that there are no hidden costs. All of our course manuals have been specifically written for each program, they are very thorough and contain all the information needed to complete the course. Additional reading lists are provided to students who wish to conduct further research but it should be re-iterated that the course materials have been specifically created to be the best guide available and the manuals provided take the place of any “essential reading” list.
