Part 1 Identify the Main Character – Harrick the Wizard Owl
Once upon a time, in a forest deep in the Misty Mountains lived a young owl named Harrick. Harrick is often lively and curious and belongs to a clan of wise wizard owls who protected the forest from evil powers since the dawn of time. Harrick, together with his many friends in the forest, lived a harmonious and happy life and cared deeply for one another.
Part 2 Identify the task or the problem to cope with – Journey to the North
Harrick’s grandfather, Heimdall, a grand wizard owl who has mystical powers and spells, led the clan for many centuries. But as years go by, he became weaker and frail, and needed someone to take his place. When Harrick turned three, his grandfather told him that he would one day be the leader of the clan. To learn the spells and gain powers, Harrick must travel to Utupia, a place located a thousand miles away in the north to find the sorcerer owl who only wakes up every hundred years.
You must go to Utupia!
Harrick was afraid and nervous. All his life, he was well taken care of and never had to worry about anything, and now he has such a huge responsibility to bear. Heimdall, sensing his grandson’s hesitation, smiled and told Harrick that everything will be fine. Self believe is important, he said to the young Harrick, and what he was doing is a noble thing he was going to protect the future of his clan and forest friends.
The night before Harrick left for the grand journey, his mother told him should he encounter any difficulty during the journey, he could receive help by chanting a spell three times and a Robin would appear. Remembering this in mind, he kissed his mother good bye and departed.
Harrick’s route to Utupia was a long and challenging one. The weather was very harsh – it was hot as summer during the day and cold as winter during the night. The constant pouring rain made flying hard and forced Harrick to make frequent stops. He was also often concerned with his own safety as there were many bigger birds like the Eagles and Hawks roaming around for prey like him. During the night, Harrick found it difficult to find a place to rest as most trees were taken by other birds .
Part 3 Things that hinder the main character – The Evil Vultures After a long and tiring flight, Harrick finally had a glimpse of Utupia from the skies. Happy and relieved, Harrick started speeding up, hoping to reach the sorcerer as soon as possible. Suddenly, he felt a huge dark shadow appeared above, and then charging towards him. It was a group of gigantic vultures, and they seem furious that Harrick is flying around their part of the sky. They circled him, demanding who he was and where he was flying to. Harrick, full of fear, told them that he was looking for the sorcerer owl and he was a part of the wizard owl clan from the Misty mountains.
The vultures did not believe him and told him that if he continued lying they would eat him alive. Harrick then thought of his mother’s spell, and started chanting to save his dear life. “Hoo, Hoo, Hoo”… he chants.
Part 4 Things that help the main character – Raquelle the Peacekeeper
In an acorn tree not far away, Raquelle the Robin was just back from her daily hunt for food when she heard a familiar chant. Raquelle belongs to a clan of peacekeeping Robins who have been safeguarding the peace in the Northern skies for a long time. Surprised as she has not heard of this chant for a very long time, Raquelle knew something bad was happening. Without hesitation, she flew towards the direction where the chanting comes from.
“Stop! What do you think you are doing?” she exclaimed while Harrick was just moments away from being attacked by the evil vultures. “This young owl is an intruder! He wants to see sorcerer and claims he is from the Misty Mountains.” Upon hearing that, Raquelle looked at Harrick, and asked questions about his family to which he answered with confidence. Harrick further explained that his grandfather is now old and frail; so he needed to see the sorcerer to learn the spells and powers to protect his clan and forest.
Knowing that the vultures will not allow Harrick to pass even though he had spoken the truth, Raquelle chants a spell on the vultures and froze them. “Go, enter Utopia now! I can’t hold them for long!” With all his might, Harrick flew down to Utupia, hoping everything will go smoothly.
Part 5 The main action: Whether (and how) the character succeeds or fails in their task – The Sorcerer’s Test Harrick was very exhausted but was relieved that he is not far away from the sorcerer’s place. He continued his journey until he found himself in front of a big gate, leading to a huge castle. As Harrick proceeds to knock the gate, two owlets appeared and brought him in.
“What business do you have here, grandson of Heimdall?” a deep voice filled the entire hall as Harrick walks in. Shaking in fear, Harrick tried to explain his intention to meet the sorcerer. “My grandfather is old and frail, he wants me to come here and learn from you.” Without any words, the sorcerer led him to a dark room at the end of the hall.
Harrick then found himself in the room filled with books – it was a library. “Now if you could master all three Books of Spells within three days, you will be finally worthy a wizard owl. If not, you shall work for me forever.”
The Book of Spells were so difficult to master that Harrick almost gave up. But he knew everyone were counting on him back home, so he persevered through. After three long nights, he finally got everything in him and was ready to face the sorcerer.
“You did well. Now go home and be the next leader of the misty mountains.” Harrick cried with joy and thanked the sorcerer for his teachings. Harrick now feels like he is a part of something great.
Part 6 What happens after the main character’s success or failure – The Great Harrick
Harrick returns to a home without a leader – his grandfather had died while he was away. Filled with grief, Harrick promised to continue his grandfather’s legacy. However, as news travelled far to the North, the evil vultures were planning to take over the forest.
In the fifth evening of Heimdall’s funeral, a dark shadow casted the skies above the mountains – the evil vultures have arrived. They started attacking the homes of the forest creatures and captured some of the wizard owls. There was no spell powerful enough to chase these vultures away.
Harrick, with his newly mastered powers, chanted an ancient spell that turned the vultures into pigeons, thus restoring peace into the forest. The forest creatures and the clan of wizard owls cheered on the victory, and celebrated Harrick as their new and worthy leader. And they live happily ever after.
