INTRODUCTION
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) signed into law in 1990 has made it illegal to discriminate against the disabled in access to goods, services, and employment. It is the responsibility of the owner of goods and services to be knowledgeable in aspects of these accessibility guidelines. The University of California, Davis is the home to over 30,000 students. Many of these students are disabled. Disabilities such as cerebral palsy and vision impairment make navigating the university campus much more difficult. Current ADA signage guidelines lack a consistent form of directional signage for interior use. The following guidelines seek to create a wayfinding system that is in tune with the university’s own branding guidelines. Additionally, it hopes to create more accessible spaces and a consistent method of placing and designing directional signage and other physical wayfinding materials for the interiors of buildings.

No other types of arrows are to be used for directional signage.
REQUIRED SYMBOLS ›› The International Symbol of Accessibility is required when not all restrooms, entrances, or elevators in a building are accessible. ›› Public TTY’s should be identified with the International TTY symbol. ›› Telephones with volume control are identified with a pictogram. ›› Areas where assistive listening systems are required should display the international Symbol of Hearing Loss.

SUMMARY
Signs identifying rooms or spaces must use raised characters and braille. These signs must be mounted in a consistent location: on the wall next to the door on the side of the handle. Temporary signs (7 days or less) are exempt from following the guidelines. Temporary signs may include but are not limited to: ›› Directories ›› Company names ›› Occupant names ›› Building addresses Signs should have a non-glare finish and must contrast with the background. The contrast value between the Light Reflectance Value of the image or type and the background should be at least 70%.

SUMMARY
Directional signage is not traditionally required to be in consistent locations. However, to assist the wayfinding of those who are impaired visually, mentally, or physically, it has become important to establish a consistent system of placement. A designer should be consulted before placing directional signage to be assured that it is placed in consistent and intuitive locations. Signs should have a non-glare finish and must contrast with the background. The contrast value between the Light Reflectance Value of the image or type and the background should be at least 70%. If directional signage cannot be placed in a manner that is consistent or intuitive, it is probably best to instead consider the tactile paving system detailed inthe next section.

ELEVATOR tiles indicate a path directly to the elevator
CROSS tiles indicate an alternative intersection
PAUSE tiles indicate an open area where many different paths may be taken

SUMMARY
The tactile pavement system is an alternative form of wayfinding that uses a combination of large vinyl type on the floor in addition to tiling patterns that help assit in the wayfinding of those who may be physically impaired, visually impaired, or both. Someone who is both blind and in a wheelchair will be able to navigate a space in a university and know which direction to head to find a certain class number especially if this system is used in conjunction with consistent directional signage. The material of the tiles should be sturdy enough to emit strong tactile feedback and audio feedback if a wheelchair were to roll over it. It should also not protrude so much that it becomes a constant tripping hazard.
