amily traditions are present all the time, but shine through at the start of the holiday season. With Thanksgiving only a few weeks away, it reminds me of my own family traditions — I am, of course, the designated potato masher, while my Dad is the expert turkey carver and gravy mixer. You can find my lovely wife, Wendy, preparing the big fella (Tom) the day before he nears the oven. Every job is important on this big day and we leave it to my mother-in-law Gail to distribute the jobs — literally, she hands them out in writing. As for my father-in-law Chuck, he’s the ceremonial grand wine master; we let him tend to the good stuff. This year I’m breaking traditions a little to attempt to cook a turkey on my new Big Green Egg Barbeque from Fat City Brew & Grill! But don’t worry; Wendy will still be on the frontline with Tom in the oven. Speaking of FAT CITY Brew & BBQ Supply read on page 6 to learn about their Turkey BBQ class on November 14th!

Holiday traditions continue at Lincoln Center as we approach the Thanksgiving season and our 64th Holiday Open House on November 15th. The day will kick off with Santa, live reindeer, a horse-drawn carriage and train rides, as well as complimentary family photos in front of the Christmas tree. The Snow Village is back yet again and will be located at various storefront windows throughout the Center and comes complete with a scavenger hunt you don’t want to miss! Our cover this month invites you to drop by the recently remodeled Podesto’s Market. Bernie and Debbie Morganstern’s vision has brought about an amazing, fresh new marketplace — thank you, Podesto’s, for investing and believing in our Stockton Community. For the full story, read on page 19. As the holidays approach, let’s keep our Shop Local Campaign alive! Every dollar you spend at one of our local businesses returns three times more money to your local economy than one spent at a mega chain store. Research has shown a strong correlation between the percentage of small locally owned businesses and indicators of personal and community health & vitality. It’s hard to imagine our community without our 80 plus local restaurants & businesses. All good things come to those who wait and this month McCaulou’s Department Store will be open in Lincoln Center — perfect timing for the holidays. We also have many spectacular events planned for the season ahead from live music, to valet parking, men’s shopping nights, in-store wine tastings and your favorite holiday party restaurants. Grab a ride (page 28) and experience all we have to offer. Happy Thanksgiving! Phil Johnson, President

Mommy & Me

My daughter, Elizabeth and I have a standing date every Friday at Lincoln Center. We start at the play place and then walk to Starbucks for a Chai for me and an empty cup with a splash of milk for her. She loves to greet everyone as we walk through the patio in front of Noah’s Bagels. After, she likes to go into Nothing Bundt Cakes to check out their colorful cake decorations and accessories. Another favorite are the fountains, on the Brickwalk, where she can wile away the day trying to touch the water. After we are done playing in the fountains we walk back to the play place, first stopping in Artesian Natural Foods to say hello to the staff there, who are always happy to say hello. Then it’s back to the tomato slide and asparagus tube for lots of toddler fun. Thank you, Lincoln Center, for providing a clean, welcoming, and safe environment for our weekly mommy-and-me dates!

We want to hear from you!

Blame it on the rain

Da-Vid Alejo of POMP Salon

Hello there, and welcome back! It has been quite a summer! I don’t think I stand alone in a well-deserved anticipation for a winter’s reception to come along. Bring on the glimmer and glitz, the twinkling lights and crackling fires. Before we grab our boots and fur lined coats, keep in mind our hair and skin are begging for a much needed replenishment. Don’t abandon your natural needs; Botugen by “Fanola” is my utmost suggestion for the fix. One of my customers was recently introduced to this product by our wonderful product specialist Teresa Garibaldi. Without petition, on her return visit, she expressed, wondrously, “Da-Vid, I don’t know what’s in that stuff by hair feels great! My color hasn’t faded at all and I have less gray.” I politely interjected, “Your hair looks great, but, come on…less gray?? We’ll go with: your hair is in better condition and considerably less faded.” She concluded with, “Just don’t let me leave without more!” And with that, she was convinced of the astonishing benefits (and she had further convinced me!) of Botugen. So, what is Botugen? I personally equate it to a Botox for the hair. This product rejuvenates tired, damaged, distressed hair, leaving your hair feeling youthful and bouncy. And who doesn’t want healthier, fuller hair?? The need to look great for social occasions is upon us and with the hustle and bustle season approaching, our time for personal care is limited by shopping, dinners and gift wrapping. Let’s maximize our time by using products that have a lasting effect. With hurricane Joaquin knocking at the door we need to be able to rely upon a lasting color and excellent haircut to see us through. So, bring on the parties, the laughter and the abundance of good cheer, let us gather with our families and celebrate the New Year! Keep it dry! I’m out, Ciao! Da-Vid P.S. I am extraordinarily pleased to announce that we will be stockists of the luxury hair care line Oribe! Oribe can be found in, Barney’s New York, Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus and POMP Salon. This Christmas, give the gift of luxury hair care.

xciting things have been happening at Podesto’s Market and Deli! On the cover of this month’s Chronicle is the newly remodeled produce department at Podesto’s Market. The entire store has been remodeled, with energy efficient lights and new refrigeration along with custom designed art décor with quotes from local farmers on the walls in the Produce Department and photos of their famous sandwiches displayed in the deli. Not only that but the whole Market has been painted in warm colors of green, brown and yellow for a more comfortable and relaxing shopping experience. “We support of community and the importance of shopping local, that’s why we do our best to sell and promote local famers, ranchers and distributors,” owners, Bernie and Debbie Morganstern explained. Patrons will also be able to purchase fresh cups of coffee daily from local roaster Trail Coffee (formerly Jesus Mountain Coffee) right inside the store. And if you want a snack to go with your coffee while you shop, the bakery will also be selling more breakfast items. Be sure to make Podesto’s Market your stop for holiday meal shopping, and don’t n forget to call or stop by soon to order your holiday turkey or ham!

Need a lift? New transportation options have arrived! by Caitlin Hamer

W

ith the holiday season approaching, there’s plenty of cause for celebration. Lincoln Center’s many wonderful restaurants offer warm environments to get together with family and friends for some holiday cheer, but it’s important to remember to not drink and drive. Luckily, there are now more options than just calling a cab to get safely to and from gatherings – ridesharing services like Lyft and Uber have made their way to Stockton, and they’re just a few clicks away on your smart phone!

Once a driver has been contacted, the app shows you your driver’s name and photo, details of the car they’re driving, and their distance away from you. You can track the driver’s progress on the app’s map, or you can put away your phone and wait for the text that notifies you that your driver has arrived. Most Lyft cars sport a large, pink mustache on their front bumpers, making them hard to miss!

Both services have gained popularity across the county recently, as they’re safe, friendly, and extremely convenient. It just takes a few simple steps:

Payments are made through the app after your ride is over, so you never need to worry about having cash on hand. Whether you choose Lyft or Uber is purely up to you – both are reliable, affordable, and easy to use, and both use local, background checked drivers.

1. Find and download either or both of the apps from the Apple App Store or Google Play (Uber can be downloaded for Windows phones, but Lyft cannot)

For those who prefer to use a classic cab, or don’t have a smart phone: Yellow Cab Co: (209) 390-9288, AA City Cabs Stockton: (209) 955-1817

2. Create an account with your email address and a valid credit card 3. When you need a driver, simply open up the app – the GPS settings will pinpoint your location, and all you have to do is click to request a driver

Germs: Breaking the Cycle of Sickness By: Ahmid Dredar, MD This is the time of year where germs make their grand appearance, disrupting our routines and quite literally making us sick. To help break the cycle of sickness in your home, your workplace and our community, it is important to practice proper cold and flu season etiquette. 1. Wash your hands more often than you think you need to and try to keep them out of your eyes, nose, and mouth. 2. Give your immune system a boost by eating right, getting plenty of sleep, and exercising regularly. Get your yearly flu shot to help guard yourself from the flu. 3. Be on your guard in cozy spaces. Although many people can be contagious before they realize that they have a cold, it’s best to steer clear of those showing signs of sickness. 4. If you have a fever, stay home for at least 24 hours after the fever has passed. Getting sick is never on anyone’s agenda. If you do get sick, be sure to talk to your doctor if you have questions and to try your best to protect others.

Dr. Ahmid Dredar is a family practice physician with Dignity Health Medical Group Stockton, a network of health professionals providing high quality and compassionate care. To make an appointment with Dr. Dredar or one of our other primary care physicians, call 209.475.5500 or visit DHMF.org/Stockton.
