As we round out February, we celebrate Heart Month with a heartfelt story of three-year-old Brooklyn Bertilacchi fighting congenital heart disease from birth. Join Brooklyn and her family as they work towards raising funds for research on the disease through UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital of Oakland — who recently opened a clinic here in Stockton. And flip to page 20 to learn more about her story. Spring and summer bring many new things to the Lincoln Center neighborhood! Some exciting new tenants to be on the lookout for include Mancini’s Sleepworld, Lean Feast, Havana Leaf & Vine and a new Wells Fargo ATM between Podesto’s Market and Deli and Starbucks. Read more about these four new tenants on page 8. Theadora Boutique has more than meets the eye in-store for spring. Learn about the new adventure Jackie Kromm and her staff are exploring to help women in our community with Breast Cancer on page 16. We also sat down with Tony Phan, owner of Signature Nails, and the new owner of DOMO Japanese Sushi Grill & Bar. On page 22 he talks to us about his many business ventures, how he loves Lincoln Center, and his dedication to our country. Our summer events are right around the corner and you don’t want to miss them. Visit page 7 for a full list of dates for the Easter Bunny, the annual Sidewalk Sale, Wine Stroll, Dueling Pianos, SummerFest and so much more. We hope to see you at the Center for all that 2020 has in store!

LEAN FEAST

405 BENJAMIN HOLT DRIVE

Mancini’s Sleepworld was founded in 1969. With over 33 locations, their warehouse is over 100,000 square feet in size and almost every mattress they carry can be delivered the same day. We are excited to see this move into Lincoln Center in the previous Performance Bicycle location.

Lean Feast is a convenience-based traditional restaurant and online storefront. It provides healthy options for on-the-go meals. A description of Lean Feast might lend itself to a Chipotle/ Subway hybrid with all the conveniences of a clean eatery. Within their restaurant, you’ll find 23 flavors of protein (chicken, steak, fish and ground turkey and more), 13 vegetable options and six carbohydrates to choose from. Customers select their desired portion sizing of a protein, a carb & a veggie–it’s as simple as that! Meals are prepared before the customer and they have the option of taking it to go or dining in to enjoy the experience.

STEP 2: TAKE IT CHEESY First, place your cheese, as this will be the focal point of your spread. Depending on the size of your board, Lexi recommends having anywhere from 3-5 different kinds of cheese: one hard cheese, one soft cheese, and one blue cheese. Lexi’s go-to picks are Trader Joe’s Unexpected Cheddar for a crowdpleasing hard cheese, Cowgirl Creamery’s Mt. Tam

step 4 Add a bit of sweetness and complexity to your board with jams, pepper jellies, honey, and dips. For this board, Lexi added fig butter for a fruity pop and placed honeycomb over the blue cheese, creating a perfect flavor profile of tangy, savory, and sweet.

Getting Intimate WITH

— THEADORA BOUTIQUE — BY TARA VALONE

When it comes to building relationships, Jackie Kromm, owner at Theadora Boutique, strives to make her customers feel like they belong, like they have a place at her store, but also in her heart. If you know Jackie, you know that she is caring, kind, genuine and loving. These feelings radiate through Theadora and how it has evolved over the years. Customer experience is her number one focus, not only to help you find what you’re looking for but directing you JACKIE KROMM to other shops here in Lincoln Center if it's something she doesn't carry. She says, “the best thing you can give a customer is information, and that means if they can't find it with us, they can find it somewhere else in the Center.” Jackie has trained her staff to implement the same approach, and it truly shows.

16

|

LINCOLN CENTER CHRONICLE

Theadora continues to carry a wide range of clothing for different age groups — ranging from 20 “somethings” up to women in their 80s. She notes there's always room for growth, and she is so excited about what is coming in for Spring. New things to look out for this season are new junior brands at a better price point, tailoring to a younger generation, while still satisfying an older generation. Jackie is finding mom and daughter duos shopping more and more in her store and wants to provide a space where the two of them can share their shopping experience so that mom or daughter can find something all under the same roof.

Jackie explains that women are struggling to find what they need, and many women are wanting to prepare for their surgery ahead of time. They have an opportunity to do this through their insurance, but there isn’t a good option in town to purchase the correct garments. Aside from their already tough journey, finding a bra that fits post-surgery shouldn’t be an issue, and Jackie is working to fill that void. Not only does she want to provide their basic needs, she wants to help them feel desirable again — to themselves and their loved ones. She sees patients from all over, and as young as 21, finding it “striking that there are so many women who have Breast Cancer.”

Where Jackie is really excited to grow is where she says there is an untapped market here in town in her lingerie department, but specifically in mastectomy bras. California ranks as one of the top 10 states in the country for Breast Cancer diagnosis. It knows no age, environment or size, but it’s also lacking in its post-surgical offerings.

Theadora specializes in providing women postsurgical garments for support and comfort that include not only the bra but prosthetics too. Navigational nurses at our local hospitals are where a lot of women are referred to Theadora through. However, there is one caveat — but another opportunity for Theadora — and that

is accommodating customers, survivors, and patients by accepting insurance. Theadora currently does not take insurance but is something she is working towards, especially with the lack of local availability. Many women are foregoing their insurance covering these garments because they’re in a bind and purchasing them outright from their own pocket. Jackie is anticipating accreditation for accepting insurance in the near future. The passion that lives through Jackie and Theadora is evident — she loves every aspect of her store. From keeping up with trends, shopping for clothing, outfitting Mother of the Bride dresses, pajamas and even catering towards men with the SAXX underwear line, she “feels like the store is more than just a clothing store. There’s a wonderful group of men and women that know us and who we continue to build beautiful relationships with throughout the community. I love seeing how we can help them, and in turn, how they nourish us.” For more information on mastectomy bras, contact Theadora Boutique. 270 Lincoln Center, Stockton Mon – Sat: 10:00 am–6:00 pm Sun: 12:00–5:00 pm 209.474.7407 theadoraboutique.com

You had us at hello. After 120 years, allow us to reintroduce ourselves. If these walls could talk, they would tell tales of humble beginnings when the people of Stockton gathered in 1899 to celebrate the setting of the hospital’s cornerstone. Or perhaps they’d share the stories of the thousands of lives that have been touched since the doors opened more than a century ago. Through the years, St. Joseph’s Medical Center has grown as our community has grown, ready to serve all who enter its doors seeking healing. Thank you for letting us care for you.

Brooklyn BERTILACCHI

A STORY OF PERSEVERANCE AND HEART

BY ARIEL ARMANINO

Only hours after Brooklyn Bertilacchi was born, she was flown via helicopter to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland. Here, she would begin her lifelong relationship with the hospital’s amazing doctors, nurses, and staff. Much to her family’s surprise, Brooklyn was born with a congenital heart defect called pulmonary valve stenosis that was undetected during pregnancy. “Needless to say, as soon as Brooklyn was born our world was turned upside down,” said her mother, Katie. In the last three years since Brooklyn was born, she has undergone a plethora of procedures, including three balloon cardiac catheterizations, as well as an open-heart surgery to place a patch to widen the pulmonary valve. This last surgery, however, was only a temporary fix, and Brooklyn will need to receive a valve transplant within the coming years.

Despite the ongoing surgeries, Brooklyn hasn’t lost an ounce of her free spirit and spunky personality. The 3-year-old loves to sing and dance, play with her two siblings, and could spend hours on the beach with her toes in the sand. She’s described by her family as fun-loving, outgoing, and feisty! “Since the day she was born all of her doctors and nurses have told us how feisty she is, which has helped her greatly along this journey,” said Katie. Brooklyn has undergone the majority of her treatment in Oakland, but with the recent development of a new Heart Clinic near St. Joseph’s Hospital, the Bertilacchi family looks forward to being able to have local access to some of the nation’s top pediatric cardiologists in the nation. “Having this access located right in Stockton helps ease the travel time for patients and families who would otherwise have to take off time from work to travel to clinics located outside of Stockton,” said Katie. “I personally used to have to take a whole day off of work to travel to Walnut Creek or the Oakland clinic for monthly checkups.” And the local access is likely to have a profound impact on the lives of many Valley residents, as congenital heart defects are the most common form of birth defects. In fact, 1 in every 100 children is born with congenital

heart disease, which often accompanies severe conditions requiring ongoing surgical and medical care.

1 in every 100 children is born with congenital heart disease, which often accompanies severe conditions requiring ongoing surgical and medical care. The community has been immensely supportive of Brooklyn and her journey. “Since the day Brooklyn was born, community memberswhether it’s friends, acquaintances, or complete strangers who have heard about Brooklyn’s story-

have continuously offered us their support and prayers,” said Katie. The community has also been hugely supportive of Katie’s annual fundraising efforts, which she calls “Go Red for Brooklyn.” Taking place every February, which is Heart Awareness Month, Katie aims to raise awareness for congenital heart disease, as well as funds to be donated to the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland—the amazing place that has played such an instrumental role in Brooklyn’s journey. Katie’s fundraising first began as a small Facebook fundraiser the first year. Last year, she opted for a GoFundMe drive, which collected over $2,000 in donations for the children’s hospital. “This year we would like to be our best yet! And we are partnering with Lincoln Center to make this happen,” said Katie. During the month of February and through March 15, community members can visit any participating store and make a donation. The first 100 people who make a donation of $25 or more will receive a thank you gift from Brooklyn of a metal heart, made from a wine barrel ring. Donations can also be made online at givingtogether.ucsf. edu/GoRedForBrooklyn. All donations are tax-deductible and benefit the Heart Center at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland.

TONY PHAN | OWNER Tony Phan has been a business owner here in Lincoln Center for over seven years and recently just bought his second business, DOMO Japanese Sushi Grill & Bar. Tony is thrilled to be a business owner in the Center, and constantly raves about the Stockton community that he loves to serve. Learn more about Tony and his journey below!

business owner. After owning a nail salon in Modesto for nine years, I saw a space open up in Lincoln Center and knew that it was the perfect place for me. I’ve lived in Stockton a long time and had heard so much about Lincoln Center. It didn’t matter what season it was; the Center was always bustling and I knew I needed to get in on the action.

HOW DID YOU END UP IN CALIFORNIA?

HOW LONG HAVE YOU OWNED SIGNATURE NAILS?

I moved here from Vietnam when I was younger. I started college at Delta to take some business classes, then moved to Arkansas where I lived for five years and owned a nail salon and restaurant. When I came back to Stockton, I wanted to stick with what I knew and I love being a

I’ve owned and operated Signature Nails for seven years here in Lincoln Center. Prior to opening this salon, I owned a nail salon in Modesto. I really saw an opportunity here in Lincoln Center — I live in town and think this is the best place to open a business.

WHAT PROVOKED YOUR INTEREST IN DOMO? When I lived in Arkansas over 20 years ago, I owned and operated a Chinese Restaurant called Vincent’s. When I was approached to purchase DOMO, I honestly didn’t give it much thought — it just felt right. I have a great relationship with the previous owners, and we’ve had great collaboration on making the switch. Not only is DOMO located in a great spot in the Center, but it has a name and following, so I’m excited to see it grow.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ON DOMO’S MENU?

Asparagus beef wrap.

ANYTHING NEW WE CAN SEE IMPLEMENTED AT DOMO FOR 2020?

I’m working hard to link all my businesses together. We will be launching a membership card where you can gather points at both Signature Nails and DOMO and then exchange the points for nails or food. We’re also working on a quicker turnaround time for lunch — we understand that people have small windows to eat and we want to accommodate that. At the restaurant, we’ll also be targeting three different areas for improvement: service, cleanliness and quality of our food.

BEING A BUSINESSOWNER FOR OVER 25 YEARS, DO YOU HAVE ADVICE FOR THOSE WHO ARE JUST STARTING OUT?

You have to know what you’re doing, and if you don’t research it until you do. Also, location, location, location. You may have to pay more for the best spot in town, but it’s worth it — always.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT BEING A BUSINESS OWNER? I’m a believer in God and thank him every day for all that I have. This country has given me so much opportunity since moving here, so my favorite thing about being a business owner is to be able to give back to my community through my businesses. Like the saying goes, “ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country. – John F. Kennedy. I’m here to help people by giving job opportunities which makes me feel very happy. 300 Lincoln Center Lunch: Mon–Sat 11:30 am–2:00 pm Happy Hour: Mon–Thurs 4:30 pm–6:00 pm Dinner: Mon–Sun 4:30 pm–9:00 pm 209.451.3654 domostockton.com 6565 N. UCSF brings

DR. CHYU

hear t to Stockton BY DR. CHRISTOPHER CHYU OF UCSF PEDIATRIC CARDIOLOGY

In an ongoing mission to provide Caring, Healing, Teaching and Discovering, one of the goals of UCSF Health is to provide resources and access to subspecialty care locally for communities throughout Northern California. The UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital, through its Pediatric Heart Center, has recently expanded its presence in the Stockton area. Dr. Christopher Chyu and Dr. Mark Cocalis are UCSF pediatric cardiologists who see patients in their Stockton clinic. Dr. Cocalis has served the Stockton and Modesto community for over 15 years and Dr. Chyu has created additional clinical availability in Stockton since 2018. Pediatric cardiologists provide expertise regarding congenital heart defects (CHD) beginning in fetal life through early adulthood. Dr. Chyu, Dr. Cocalis, and their colleague, Dr. Walter Li, provide cardiac evaluations and management for infants, children, and young adults for a variety of referral indications. They also offer consultative services for pregnant women that have been referred for fetal echocardiograms. Congenital heart defects affect approximately 1% of all newborns but most of these abnormalities do not require any significant medical or surgical intervention. In cases of complex congenital heart disease, it is common to require close monitoring in an intensive care unit. In some cases, urgent surgical intervention may be required and transfer to advanced level hospital facilities are coordinated with the pediatric cardiologists. UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital has campuses in both Oakland and San Francisco providing

DR. CHYU WITH A PATIENT

services for patients with the most complex congenital heart disease with excellent outcomes and is recognized by the US News and World Report as the highest-ranking program in Northern California. The UCSF pediatric cardiologists also provide inpatient consultative services in the major hospitals of San Joaquin County. These relationships allow the majority of patients with common cardiac abnormalities to remain with their families in these local hospitals. Additionally, if prenatal diagnosis of congenital heart defects is known after a fetal echocardiogram has been completed then families and obstetricians can determine whether the babies can be delivered in local Stockton hospitals or recommend delivery at advanced level hospitals in order to best coordinate care for the babies after delivery. The UCSF Pediatric Heart Center is also integrated with the UCSF Fetal Treatment Center and prenatal counseling and management are offered to families when congenital heart defects are identified. Improving prenatal detection of congenital heart defects with fetal echocardiograms available in the Stockton community provides the opportunity to deliver the best care for patients and families. If a referral to pediatric cardiology is indicated, talk to your primary care physician or obstetrician about the UCSF pediatric and fetal cardiology clinic in Stockton.
