amily and holidays ring strong in tradition here at Lincoln Center. For the last 27 years, I look forward to my Christmas Eve lunch with my four kids and grandson — as my wife Wendy does the same with her Dad and sisters. As we celebrate our 68th holiday season here at the Center, we hope to make Lincoln Center your home for Christmas, sparking new traditions and cherishing the old.    Small Business Saturday kicks off on November 30th with Santa and the train, live music and snow fall on the Brickwalk. As an added bonus, we’re bringing the live reindeer back the entire day too! After this day full of fun, snow will be falling on the Brickwalk daily from 5:00 – 9:00 pm through December 31. On the hunt for the perfect parking place? Let us relieve one less stress with our complimentary valet parking. Take advantage of it every Friday and Saturday before Christmas from 11:00 am – 11:00 pm located near Papapavlo’s Bistro & Bar. Phil Johnson   Saturday, December 7 brings our annual food drive in front of Podesto’s Market and Trader Joe’s from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm. Proceeds benefit the Emergency Food Bank of Stockton, and a big thank you to the baseball teams from both Lincoln and Saint Mary’s High School for helping collect the food donations. To continue the spirit of giving, check out page 9 for a list of Merchants collecting donations for the Coat & Sock Drive. All gently used coats and new socks will be donated to the Gospel Center Rescue Mission through December 31.    Santa is coming to town and will be located in the North Pole at 277 Lincoln Center, between Theadora Boutique and Limitless Escape Games. Cut out the calendar on page 5 with all Santa, snow and the North Pole Express train times. The Snow Village is also in the windows of the North Pole so take a peak as you stroll through the Center. On the cover this month is Santa himself at the North Pole with Nethan (9) and Nicholas (4) DiArenzo, of Market Tavern, and Georgiana (6) Pappas, of Papapavalo’s Bistro & Bar, all dressed in Sassy Pants Children’s Boutique and shoes from McCaulou’s Department Store.    The 2019 Greenlaw Grupe Merchant of the year was awarded to Best Wishes. We presented owner Julie Van Noate with this prestigious honor that recognizes outstanding achievement in the small business category for a merchant who best represents themselves, Lincoln Center and the community in a variety of categories. 30 years ago, Julie took over the store and has not looked back. She continues to innovate and evolve her store to her customer’s needs.    Speaking of Holiday needs don’t forget to order your prime rib and fresh Dungeness crab at Podesto’s Market. See page 27 for a Podesto’s perfect prime rib recipe — you will not be disappointed. Not in the mood for cooking? Food Blogger Suzanne Ledbetter has an incredible review of all our Asian style restaurants on page 30.   Last but not least, on page 17 of this issue and you’ll find our gift guide for all your stocking stuffers, gadgets, clothing, jewelry, home decor and much more. Be sure to visit all our retailers this year to experience exceptional customer service and free custom gift wrapping, all while supporting your local economy.

know your neighbor Starr Donati & Carolyn Walker TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.

Carolyn - I’ve been here in

Lincoln Center now for 55 years watching many changes and transitions through the decades. My husband’s dental practice was here too, so you can say this really has been my home away from home for the majority of my life. I feel the center has never had so much to offer to so many in our community than it does today. What I am proud of still remains and sets us apart from all other centers, is the personal service all our businesses still have to offer. Starr - I’ve been running around this center since I was six years old, remembering while attending Lincoln Elementary waving to my mom during the Halloween parade that we still enjoy watching today. My first job was right here working for Kenny and Iona Hepper at age 15, never imagining that I’d return after graduating from college to work alongside my mom.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU OWNED AND OPERATED FLAIR BOUTIQUE? Carolyn - I worked for the

Heppers, the original owners of the Village Flair, for 16 years and started a small clothing section. When they retired my husband, Lyle, and I purchased the clothing boutique renaming it Flair Boutique which would remain to be ours together for 27 years. Their daughter, Judy, who recently passed away, took over and renamed the gift section Flair Gifts and Accessories. We

truly miss our dear Flair friends and the beautiful gift store that was a such a treasure here in Lincoln Center for so long. Starr - I had been working and managing the store for Mom for 26 years and after we lost Lyle, we started a transition of ownership. 12 years later, here we are and with the help of my husband Joe, we have a beautifully remodeled store. Although Mom works for me now, we still consider ourselves a team!

WHAT IS YOUR MOST PRIZED CLOTHING ITEM YOU OWN?

Starr - I just haven’t been able to

get rid of a black rabbit fur and knit poncho from decades ago. It still looks new and works casual or dressy and still is a cuddle up favorite of mine. Carolyn - Probably for me would be an Elie Tahari long black furtrimmed cardigan sweater. I love my sweaters.

ANY ADVICE FOR THOSE ON THE HUNT FOR THE PERFECT HOLIDAY OUTFIT?

HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED TOGETHER? WHAT IS IT LIKE?

Starr and Carolyn - Our advice

for those on the hunt of course would be to visit us here! We can help you find what’s perfect for you and your lifestyle and we have so much to choose from, even if it’s just a new top to change up a favorite item in your closet.

Starr - We have technically been

here together for 38 years now. And some said it would never happen! We think so much alike it truly has been easy to work alongside each other, keeping it professional at the store and buying at markets together as well. With my husband traveling for his work, and children and a grandchild out of state, I feel it’s such a blessing to still have my mother and be able to share everything that we do.

IS THERE A FAMILY TRADITION YOU TWO DO IN THE STORE DURING CHRISTMAS TIME?

Starr and Carolyn - We love to

IS THERE A MUST-HAVE ITEM FOR THE SEASON?

Starr - I feel a must have item for the season is a comfortable go to bottom - a favorite legging or a jean with a touch of glitz, a track stripe or a fun pattern. Carolyn - At this time of year outerwear is so important so a must have should be a puffer vest or jacket, or something furtrimmed. Even the most special items can and should fit into our comfortable, casual lifestyles.

serve our home baked cookies that start coming out at the Christmas Faire then continue throughout the season in the store. What we also love to do is share in hosting a holiday dinner and celebration with our girls that work for us and their husbands. We couldn’t do what we do without all of their expertise and support throughout the year.

something savory

BY SUZANNE LEDBETTER //FINE FOODIE PHILANTHROPIST

We all know that Lincoln Center is a Mecca for incredible American cuisine. So, when I was offered the chance to go on a culinary exploration of the Center’s other eats—I jumped at the opportunity! I was pleasantly surprised to find such an eclectic mix of Asian eats at five unique restaurants, all offering distinctly different dishes. From dim sum to fresh sushi and spicy garlic noodles, one thing is for sure, Lincoln Center remains the premier destination for foodies in the 209!

DOMO Japanese Sushi Grill & Bar

Our region’s well known teppanyaki hot spot, is great for both family celebrations and business lunches! They served up a hearty bento box loaded with teriyaki steak, edamame, rice, salad, a California roll, and fresh fruit. If that doesn’t sound like a feast—I don’t know what does. The teriyaki beef was tender, juicy, sweet and garlicky! But what really stood out to me was that their miso salad dressing was clearly made from scratch...with a healthy dose of fresh ginger and a hint of sweetness. It made my taste buds come alive and was absolutely delish! I’d be remiss if I didn’t give you a pro tip for dining at DOMO. You must upgrade your starch to the garlic fried rice...it’s moist, garlicky and oh so satisfying! I will definitely be back to Domo with the entire family in tow! Domo Japanese Sushi Grill & Bar

PORTERHOUSE

Sho Mi Japanese Cuisine

New Yen Ching

Next up I headed to New Yen Ching, which specializes in Hunan, Peking and Sichuan cuisine. The open floor plan and natural light make it a welcoming space to sit down and savor a meal of piping hot plate of noodles on a cold winter’s night. The chef brought out the garlic noodles with tender sliced beef and fresh steamed broccoli. This plate was everything you could ever want on a cold winter’s day—piping hot spicy garlic noodles that warm the soul. The combination of green onion, savory garlic and chili oil had the perfect amount of heat and can be enjoyed by everyone. I had no idea how good garlic noodles could be. The New Yen Ching is a must stop for authentic fresh Chinese food with friendly service and plenty of room to get comfortable.

something savory

85ºC Bakery Café

I was so excited to try 85ºC Bakery Cafe, one of the center’s newest hot spots, and a national chain. With a vast array of Taiwanese and Chinese pastries, I was overwhelmed by the menu. I opted for an assortment of savory and sweet pastries along with one of their signature coffees. The Chocolate Pearl charmed me with its beautiful exterior—a shiny lacquered dark chocolate exterior adorned with an ornate gold leaf. But it’s what was on the inside that won me over. A combination of creamy chocolate mousse and ganache, it is a chocolate lover’s paradise. If you want to try something a little outside the box, grab a Matcha Red Bean Roll. The cake is fluffy, not too sweet with a chewy, crunchy texture from the addition of red beans. To wash it all down, I chose the iced sea salt coffee which was just the icing on the cake! A satisfyingly smooth combination of an iced Americano coffee with sea salt cream.

Sho Mi Japanese Cuisine

New Yen Ching

Ironically, as a frequent diner at Lincoln Center, I had never ventured to one of the cornerstone restaurants. Sho Mi is practically an institution in Lincoln Center…and for good reason! With a kicked back vibe and quick service, Sho Mi makes it the perfect spot to grab a quick business lunch or dinner before date night. With its vast array of fresh sushi rolls, sashimi and traditional Japanese dishes, there is something for everyone’s palate. I chose to go for a combo of comfort food and over the top sushi, because why not? The Loco Amor sushi roll is a massive behemoth of goodness. Loaded with fresh crab meat, shrimp, cucumber, spicy tuna, fried scallops and topped with crispy onion rings, this roll will satisfy all your sushi cravings. It was truly a special roll and one that I look forward to savoring on another visit. I also devoured their Spicy Pork Belly Ramen loaded with pork belly, soft boiled egg, spinach, corn and bamboo. But it’s the spicy umami broth that had me swooning. The depth of flavor was like a warm hug on this particularly chilly day. I regret not discovering Sho Mi before, but I am certainly glad I finally made it through the doors for a memorable meal.

85˚C Bakery Café

Dynasty Seafood Restaurant

The grand finale on my Tour of Asian eats led me to Dynasty Seafood Restaurant and I am so glad it did. The hospitality, cuisine and variety of dishes have me longing to revisit with a large group, mainly because I want to try another 20 items. With an expansive dining room and communal, family style tables, there was so much to discover. From the deep-fried shrimp balls to the crab and pork dumplings, I loved every single plate that came out of the kitchen. The pork buns were at the top of my list. The dough was fresh, fluffy and filled with tender chunks of sweet BBQ pork. I also devoured the Su Mi, a dim sum dumpling dish with buttery shrimp and pork that blew me away. And if you are in the mood for something a little sweet, opt for the creamy egg tart, with a dough reminiscent of a crumbly shortbread. The egg custard is creamy and moist with the perfect hint of sweetness.

SERVING A

s one of San Joaquin County’s longest standing non-profit organizations, the Emergency Food Bank of Stockton has spent the last 51 years fighting hunger in our community. According to Executive Director Mary Lucero, the mission of this vital organization is “to build a stronger community by providing healthy food, nutrition education, and hope to San Joaquin County residents who find themselves in need.”   The Food Bank fulfills this mission through multiple programs, which reach upwards of 100,000 local residents each year. In fact, for 2019, the Food Bank is projecting an overall distribution of 6 million pounds of food in San Joaquin County. And while the Emergency Food Bank is committed to tackling hunger on a day-to-day basis, their efforts are also big-picture centric. With a targeted focus on educating people on the importance of proper nutrition, they hope to create a future of improved health for our community as a whole.   In addition to their Main Pantry in Downtown Stockton, the Emergency Food Bank serves people county-wide through its Mobile Farmers Market Program. This program visits 62 sites within San Joaquin County, providing pantry staples, fresh produce, and nutritional education to residents in resource-deficient areas with limited access to traditional supermarkets and fresh foods.   The Emergency Food Bank has also piloted a new plan in Stockton called the Childcare

Mobile Farmers Market, which specifically targets childcare centers in low-income areas. In addition to receiving fresh fruits and vegetables, the children, daycare staff, and parents receive training on how to create a healthy atmosphere and the importance of exposing children to wholesome, nutritional choices as early as possible.    Another notable program that sets the Emergency Food Bank of Stockton apart is their Pantry Partner Program, in which they provide resources and stock the pantries of approximately 15 other locations across San Joaquin County—effectively reaching an additional 30,000 people each year.    With such a large reach, the Emergency Food Bank requires a lot of manpower, and even more heart. The organization operates with a large number of community volunteers and a set staff of 14 people— the majority of whom were recruited off of the food line itself. Upon joining the Emergency Food Bank and getting to know her team, Mary said she was very surprised to find out that most of the staff members were once recipients of the Food Bank’s services, be it as adults or as children. Now, these incredible individuals pour themselves into the organization that once helped them. “I’ve never worked with a staff that has so much passion for what we do and who are so willing to go above and beyond what is asked of them,” said Mary. “I’m just so admirable of it.”    For Mary and the Emergency Food Bank team, the people who they serve are their driving force day in and day out. They are community members from every culture, walk of life, and background. “We’re serving children,

local philanthropy

families, veterans, the elderly,” said Mary. “People have this image that it’s only the homeless population and it’s not. It’s the working poor and people who are doing really important jobs but are still struggling.”   The Emergency Food Bank of Stockton is at its very core, our people feeding our people. Staff and volunteers work tirelessly to ensure that no one in our community is forced to go hungry. More than fresh produce and canned goods, to the residents of San Joaquin County, the Emergency Food Bank of Stockton serves hope.   Volunteering, food donations, and monetary donations of any size are all welcomed ways to help support the Emergency Food Bank of Stockton. Follow them on Facebook @ EmergencyFoodBankStockton to stay apprised of all future news, events, and drives. LINCOLN CENTER CHRONICLE | DECEMBER 2019

in memory 2019 brought the loss of one too many influential people who were apart of the Lincoln Center family. Our hearts go out to their families and loved ones as we approach the holidays. They will forever be in our hearts and memories. JUDITH “JUDY” LYNNE FLYNN

RICHARD “SPIKE” MOORE BRIGGS

Judy was a staple around Lincoln Center for as long as we can remember. She started working for her Mother, Kenneth and Iona Hepper, at Village Flair. In 1982 she proudly took ownership of the business which then became Flair Gifts & Accessories. She had a love of beautiful things and was an expert buyer. Judy was also affectionately known as “The Queen of Christmas” where Flair Gifts became the go-to destination for beautiful and meaningful Christmas decor and heartfelt holiday, as well as yearround, gifts. She cherished that her customers left her store with pride and were overjoyed with the beautifully wrapped packages to honor any special occasion. Her “Flair Family” was held so close to her heart, she honored and appreciated them always. She will be missed.

Spike, owner and operator of The Ally Shop, a men’s fashion boutique, opening in 1951, and moved to Lincoln Center in 1984. Spike named his store after the famous Bay Area ship’s captain and raconteur Spike Africa (from whom Spike inherited his nickname) and ran the store for over 20 years, working well into his eighties. Spike also had an eye for interior design and a special gift for creating an “atmosphere” with music, art, good food, and great conversation. Spike was a cheerleader for the Stockton area, loving the weather, the people, the Delta and the proximity to San Francisco, the ocean, and Sierra ski resorts. He never considered making his home anywhere else.

CAYETANO BARAJAS

AUGUST 7, 1956 – SEPTEMBER 4, 2019 It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of our very own Chug-A-Bug train conductor, Cayetano Barajas. We will miss him dearly around Lincoln Center, especially during this holiday season. If you have enjoyed or currently love the train ride here at Lincoln Center, be sure to treat Neva, his wife, with the utmost respect this season as she will continue warming the hearts of children through their legacy with the Chug-A-Bug train.

STEPHEN RICHARD NOSSE

LOUIS “LIONBOY” VELEZ

Stephen “Steve” Nosse, 55 of Stockton passed away quietly after a long battle with cancer. Steve was an integral part of the Lincoln Center Chronicle for a few years, and we will always be thankful for his hard work and dedication at SASS! Public Relations for over three years.
