ummer weather has arrived, and after a long wet first half of the year, we have been working hard to bring you an amazing few months of events. Before I go into our fun times ahead, I want to congratulate Bobby Paige, Sr. of Village Barber Shop and Mike and Laci Midgley of Midgley’s Public House, who were both honored as the Stockton Chamber of Commerce Small Business Person of the Year and Business Persons of the Year. Thank you both for all your charitable work giving back to San Joaquin County. Mark your calendars and get ready to spend some time in the Center this summer!   This month we kick off with our events with the community favorite Wine Stroll on Friday, June 21, with over twenty local wineries pouring for charity. This year proceeds benefit the San Joaquin Historical Society and Museum, who work diligently to preserve and cherish local, historical artifacts. Junior League of San Joaquin County will also be out volunteering at registration for their fourth year. Thank you for all your continued efforts to support this event. Phil Johnson    Starting June 27 through August 15, every Thursday night on the Brickwalk from 6:00 - 8:30pm we will have live music, food and drinks! Come out and listen to new aspiring artists from our area.    On Friday, July 19 from 6:00 - 9:00 pm we are bringing in The Killer Dueling Pianos right here to Stockton. What is this, you ask? This duo from Southern California will set up two pianos facing each other on our Brickwalk stage and take requests from the crowd to play your favorite music. Clear your voices and wear your dancing shoes as they will have you singing along and dancing all night!    August 16 brings our first ever Summer Fest, where we will bring in two bands, the fun slide, the chug-a-bug train, food, drinks and fun for the whole family! Come dance to Take 2 — a smoking hot, eight-piece dance band performing the best dance music of all your favorite genres — arriving in the Atrium area next to Bud’s Seafood Grille. On the Brickwalk stage, The Midnighttrain Trio will be rocking the house with classic favorites from Eric Clapton, Stevie Wonder and more.    It’s never too early to save the date for October 19 from 5:00 - 9:00 pm — our annual Halloween Movie Night is back. This year we want you to choose the movie! Go to Facebook.com/LincolnCenterShops and let us know if you wish to see the return of Hocus Pocus or The Nightmare Before Christmas.    Well, this should keep you coming back to the Center and supporting our fantastic merchants. A big thank you to our upcoming event sponsors Big Valley Ford, Lovotti Inc., Mercedes Benz of Stockton and Pacific Storage Company without them our yearly events for the community would not be made possible.    We’re always working on improving your experience while you support Lincoln Center, and there are a few more areas we’ve updated: The Dignity Health Playground area has a new facelift! Located next to Artesian Natural Foods, bring the young ones out to try our new interactive learning equipment. Speaking of learning, do you have a question for us? Need store hours to your favorite retailers, ideas for the perfect gift or have a gift card question? Text Elsie (get it — LC) our new text concierge service. Ask away! (209) 217-1776. Do you need to take a break or get some laptop time in? Take a seat on our new bar top next to Starbucks — there is WiFi!    This month our On the Cover feature brings you, Suzanne Ledbetter — The Fine Foodie Philanthropist — a renowned food blogger in our area. Read her review on page 21 of our fine restaurants, and all they have to offer this summer. She will give you a taste on why Lincoln Center is the epicenter for foodies.    Our Know Your Neighbor this month highlights Pacific Compounding Pharmacy and coowner Marie Cottman. She explains in detail the compounding pharmacy model, who can benefit and the many services they provide from Hormone Therapy to Allergies.    Now get outside and have a great summer — enjoy all our area has to offer! If you need any ideas for gifts, services, and food, don’t forget to text us! Elsie is here to help.

university of the pacific: athletics

It

Janet D. Lucas, Director of Athletics Dressed in clothing from Flair Boutique

BY JANET D. LUCAS

is truly hard to believe that a year has passed since my arrival in Stockton to join the University of the Pacific as the Director of Athletics. What a year it has been! I quickly learned about the pride and connected nature of this special community and university so being so embraced by our neighbors and supporters in such a gracious manner was a priceless gift.    As I reflect back on this exceptional year, I am very proud of the efforts and achievements of our student-athletes, coaches, and staff who are passionate and impactful in their endeavors. This was a year that showcased the successes of our teams, the achievements of our student-athletes, the generosity of our donors, the support of our business partners, the progress of our facility projects, and the many special moments and events that we shared throughout the year.   We represent a program focused on growth and success in the classroom, in competition, and in the community. This life-changing experience is built on the pillars of family, balance, innovation, and a winning spirit strengthened by a foundation and tradition forged through opportunity and generations of realized dreams. When confronted with challenges, our Tiger Family consistently perseveres and overcomes obstacles to achieve excellence. Whether this involves NCAA tournament victories, conference championships, graduating seniors with a sense of purpose, serving our

community, or excelling on an exam or in a job interview, we set big goals and reach them - all while representing our University and community with pride.   Our advancement as a program is a direct result of the passion, perseverance, and commitment year-in and year-out from over 300 student-athletes, coaches, staff, campus administration, faculty members, alumni, parents, community, and friends. I sincerely thank you all for your dedication to Tiger Athletics. You are integral to the ongoing development and success of this athletics program, your hometown team!   It is exciting to think that we will be welcoming the class of 2023 to campus this fall! As we look forward with anticipation to the 2019-20 academic year and athletic season, you can easily stay connected through our website, www.pacifictigers.com, or through social media. Better yet, come by, check out the action and be a part of the journey!   On behalf of our student-athletes, coaches, and staff, thank you for helping us continue to pursue our mission of “Building Champions for Life”. Your commitment, support, and presence are key to our success, and we are grateful for all you do for Pacific Athletics. I hope you are encouraged and excited by what the future holds for the Tigers!

hange is inevitable around these parts — not only in the seasons, but in our store fronts, gardening and common areas. If we’re not changing, we’re not growing, and we’re always trying to grow into the best version of ourselves, to be able to provide our community with the best stores and restaurants.    With that, we also push our merchants to strive for change, and in this case, Kym Thompson, owner of Elevate Skincare and Spa, formerly known as Kym with a Y was given the opportunity to move into a new location, next to C.R. Porter Home Collections. Kym has always been adaptable to change and constantly looking for growth. From cooking classes, to horse riding lessons, leadership training in the desert of Nevada, drinking Ayahausca with the shamans in Costa Rica, to learning Spanish and interior design — Kym is in constant evolution, and this new beautiful business is just a part of it.   This gave Kym an opportunity for change and there — Elevate Skincare and Spa was born. Priding themselves on a results-driven clinical skincare as their focus, Elevate will also offer pampering facials and massages, including the new-to-Stockton DeepFeet Ashiatsu Bar Therapy massage style, in addition to

continuing their microblading services.    The spa will also bring in new product and experiences — such as a medical tattoo artist, Shawny Ellsworth of @ exquisiteaestheitics specializing in permanent makeup such as areola cover work and under eye camouflage techniques. Another addition to Elevate Skincare and Spa is celebrity doctor, Selene Dunham, MD, from El Dorado Hills who will be available for botox injections, fillers, laser treatment and more. Dr. David Gran will continue providing his Botox and injectables services at the new location.   Skincare is Elevate’s number one focus, and accompanying that is the classic skincare line Eminence Organic Skincare that offers a high grade of vitamin C for those over 40, but Elevate will also be bringing in SkinCeutials, better known for their CE Ferulic, a vitamin C serum that delivers advanced environmental protection and improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. As a stronger product with lipids and retinols, that Kym stresses “Women over 40 will want to start looking into to look their best”.    Change is good, and for Elevate, we’re sure this new location will be great. Call for an appointment today!

on the cover Papapavlos Bistro and Bar

What isn’t to love about Papapavlos? I love the open floorplan, ample bar seating and exposed kitchen. I love that it’s a family run business and that the service is always on point. But what always brings me back is their food! As San Joaquin County’s premier Greek restaurant, there is literally something for everyone’s taste buds on the menu. The salads are always made with fresh ingredients, and have you had their signature salad dressing? It’s the perfect blend of lemon juice, olive oil and secret spices. My all-time favorite dish is their Flaming Cheese. I mean, who doesn’t love a block of kasseri cheese doused in ouzo and lit on fire tableside. It’s a throw back to the days where restaurants presented dishes as theater, and it’s one I want tickets to. I’m also a huge fan of their calamari. It’s lightly crusted, and pan seared with butter, garlic, mushrooms and herbs—this plate is packed with flavor. And if you have room when its all said and done, go for the baklava cheesecake. The sweet layers of buttery baklava are the ultimate match to the rich and creamy cheesecake in a sugar cookie crust.

Calamari, Papavlo's Bistro & Bar

Market Tavern

This place has it all. An eclectic menu, killer cocktails and a chill vibe. I like to hit up Market Tavern on Friday afternoon with a girlfriend to wind down the week. The first thing I do is ask for the cocktail menu, because their bar game is on point. With a master mixologist like Arezou behind the bar, you can count on drinks crafted from seasonal ingredients with an inventive flair. One of my favorite summertime sippers is the Havana, an ode to Cuba’s rich rum history! Its effervescent, herbaceous and boozy—just the way I like my drinks. As for the grub, we always, and I do mean always, order the bacon and kale pizza! It’s garlicky goodness and the drizzle of honey take this pizza to next level status. And while there are so many tasty dishes to choose from, I recently stumbled upon a new menu item that knocked my socks off. The pork belly fried rice is unbelievably tasty, with crispy, tender chunks of pork belly, edamame and savory bok choy. Be sure to order it with a fried egg and Chef’s spicy sauce. It might make you sweat, but I promise it’s worth it to experience the perfect marriage of flavors.

Prime Table Steakhouse

Pork Belly Fried Rice, Market Tavern

This swanky steakhouse delivers the best in fine dining. The luxurious green leather booths combined with old world charm, make this the ultimate place to celebrate something special. Start with one of their newest cocktails, A Star is Born. An exclusive libation made with absolute

elixir and cotton candy—trust me! Its sexy, strong and just the drink to get your celebration started. And since I know I’m going to indulge when dining at Prime, I usually start with the blistered shishito peppers. Chef Nick DiArenzo knows simple ingredients make a winning combo, which is why he seasons the peppers with Hawaiian lava salt and fresh lemon juice. But let’s be honest, we come here for the steaks. Where else can you find certified 60 day dry-aged steaks? These gorgeous cuts of meat are everything beef should be. I tend to go for the 16 oz. bone-in ribeye because I love the added flavor from the marbling of fat that melts as it cooks. You also must order a few of their delectable sides to accompany your aged steak. Some of our favorites are the loaded baked potato and the brussel sprouts with cauliflower, onion and bacon. It’s a marriage made in heaven. If you aren’t a red meat lover, that’s ok. You can choose from Mary’s chicken marsala, buttery salmon or cauliflower steaks. Honestly, they are all delicious!

Midgley’s Public House

Feeling like you want to indulge? Look no further than Midgley’s Public House for the ultimate comfort food with a twist. Depending on my mood, it’s a serious toss-up between the avocado fries and the poutine. I mean first of all, when do you ever see avocado fries on a menu? Exactly! They melt in your mouth and are served with a spicy siracha ranch that I wish Midgley’s would just sell in a bottle. When it comes to lunch, there are simply too many delicious dishes to choose from. I adore their wedge salad because it’s practically a meal in itself. The hearty combination of bacon, blue cheese, hard-boiled egg and tomatoes is almost too good to be true. On the other hand, if I had to pick a staple, it has to be the steak sandwich. Chef Midgley layers a tender 10 oz. New York steak with caramelized onions, blue cheese and zingy A-1 on a crusty ciabatta roll. Garnished with lettuce and tomatoes, this dish is a behemoth of flavor! I’d also be remiss if I didn’t tell you about their bar scene. It’s lively, welcoming and down right delicious. I’m a huge fan of M.P.H Vodka Soda. I know it sounds simple, but it’s perfectly balanced. Crafted from Beluga Noble Russian Vodka, apple, pear, honey, rosemary and soda water, this libation is packed with flavor without all the calories. It’s a win-win if you ask me!

Avocado Fries, Midgley's Public House

Shrimp Stuffed Avocado, Bud's Seafood Grille

Bud’s Seafood Grille

If you haven’t been to Bud’s Seafood since they renovated the restaurant, make plans to get there this weekend. It’s bright, welcoming and still as delicious as ever. With new summertime sippers on the menu, try the Titanic. It’s a spiked berry lemonade made from a tasty blend of strawberry vodka, raspberry liqueur, lemon juice and Cointreau. You can thank me later. I also love to start with the Shrimp stuffed avocado. The fleshy green goodness is stuffed with Bay shrimp, celery, green onions, dill and parsley. For lighter fare, you simply can’t go wrong. And while so many of my dining buddies go for the legendary Bud’s Beef (it is delicious), I can’t help but choose something from the seafood side. With so many fresh-fish options, it’s tough to choose. But since I’m a sucker for Sand Dabs, I order up a heaping plate. It’s my go-to fish dish and it’s not something you see very often on local menus. Lucky for us, Bud’s delivers in a big way with a lightly breaded version, sautéed to perfection and delicate as a flower.

know your neighbor INSIDE PACIFIC COMPOUNDING PHARMACY WITH OWNER:

MARIE COTTMAN

How did you get involved in the compounding practice? About 20 years ago, while I was working at Green Brother’s Pharmacy across from St. Joseph’s hospital, we found the need for custom-made medications, especially Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement (BHRT) which was an underserved area in pharmacy practice. I attended some seminars to improve my skills and the compounding part of the pharmacy began to grow! What is your education background? I received my Doctorate of Pharmacy, or Pharm. D. Degree, from UCSF and I teach compounding at UOP here in Stockton. What is the difference between a compounding pharmacy and a pharmacy? We are a retail pharmacy that dispenses drugs like most others, but we also buy pure powders and liquids so we can make custom medications that you cannot get at a regular pharmacy. These include capsules, liquids, creams, suppositories, and lollipops. We are also the only retail pharmacy in the county, and one of only a few in Northern California, that makes sterile eyedrops and injections! What services do you offer? Can you provide a brief description as well? We make and dispense custom prescription medication and offer consulting appointments for women and men to help balance their hormones and provide medication reviews for people with multiple prescription. We also can use patient’s own blood to make Autologous Serum Eye Drops (ASEDs) for treating dry eyes and we can concentrate their blood to make platelet-gel spray help heal chronic wounds. You offer appointments for private consultations, what do most people see you for? Most consultations are women seeking information about ways to treat menopausal symptoms, like hot flashes, as well as adrenal fatigue. My husband,

ALL GOLF GOLF & DISC GOLF

who is a pharmacist as well, likes to say I specialize in the “Middle age, middle weight, middle energy women that just don’t feel good!” Who can benefit from your medications? Kids or elderly patients that can’t swallow pills. Pets that need unusual strengths. Cream combinations in high strengths. Also, we compound medications tailored to the patient’s specific needs. For instance, if someone is allergic to dyes or fillers, we can make medications without them. Or if they’ve had a unique problem, like mouth cancer surgery, and they need a lollipop for pain on the roof of their mouth. Usually, we help people after all the regular medications have failed to help their problems, so we generally are handling the toughest cases! Basically, we’re experts in figuring out how to get the drug you need to the place you need it. It’s really rewarding work. Do you specialize in other areas you’d like the community to know? Hormone Therapy is my specialty, but this is a very large subject! The sex hormones are best known for menopause symptoms, but they also affect adrenal function, thyroid functions, and mood levels. It can be a very complex balancing act.

Do you offer specialty products that are unique to your store? Yes, I believe that we are the only local providers of both Dr. Wilson’s formulas for Adrenal Fatigue and the Rx Skin Therapy line of antiaging serums. We also carry a pharmaceutical grade line of vitamins as well as doTERRA oils. We know allergies can hit hard here in the Central Valley, do you offer medications or have any recommendations? Absolutely. We’re experts at getting drugs delivered to where they're needed and with allergies, the sinus cavities are under constant attack from pollen and other allergens. We offer a nasal-nebulizer that enables a capsule of powder we make to be turned into droplet mist and deposit onto the nasal tissue. Those capsules can have a variety of anti-inflammatories and other medication to help with chronic allergy problems. It seems as if the majority of your patients come to you for hormone imbalance treatment, can you elaborate on what our hormones do for our body, why they are important and how you help? To begin, hormone is a general term for a chemical made in one part of the body that is released to tell another part of the body to do something.

Adrenaline tells your heart to beat faster. Dopamine tells your brain you are experiencing pleasure. Insulin tells your body to store sugar. Sex hormones, like estrogen and testosterone, have many functions from tissue growth to mood, to energy and metabolism. If your body doesn’t have the right building blocks to make the hormones to send specific messages, you’ll see symptoms of that imbalance. The good news is that we can add back the hormones your body needs. Our focus is on add-back therapy for sex hormones, but doctors also do add back therapy for thyroid problems, adrenal problems, and in diabetes. What are your most popular products people can walk in and buy in the same day? Hands down, Dr. Wilson’s Adrenal Fatigue supplements are our best over-the-counter (OTC) items and they can be a great way to start dealing with fatigue and that two o’clock bonk that many of us have. Can you elaborate on the Rx Skin Therapy products you carry? The RxSkin Therapy is a skin care line that is made from pharmaceutical grade ingredients to help fight aging and they don’t require a prescription to purchase! This skin care line was created by a pharmacist for patients who were not getting the results they wanted from other popular lines of products. We sell them with a 60-day money back guarantee! Patients see the best results when they use the entire line with cleansers, topical serums, and glycolic acid peels.

Are there common misconceptions people may have about your business that you’d like to clarify? Because we make medications from scratch, they usually are not ready in 10 minutes! It takes time and diligence to ensure they are made correctly. Our motto at the pharmacy… as fast as we can without rushing.

Weber House

Revealing the rich heritage of our region. 20,000-gallon redwood tank. A J.I. Case Vineyard Special tractor from 1929. Stockton founder Charles Weber’s first home. These are just a few of the items showcased by the San Joaquin County Historical Museum (SJCHM). Along with them are 50,000 other items representative of the rich history of San Joaquin County.    According to Executive Director Kristina Swanson, SJCHM offers residents a chance to step back into time, to a period that helped shape the agricultural community we know today. “We offer the community a place to learn and relax,” Swanson said. “The museum allows us to contemplate our place [as San Joaquin County residents] in history.”    SJCHM rests on 18 acres of land located at Micke Grove Park and features a number of themed buildings with displays, a restored schoolhouse, a vineyard, an oak grove, and a gift shop. Swanson recommends residents come to the park in the morning to enjoy the beautiful oak grove. “I love coming to the park [at this time],” Swanson said. “All of the staff and volunteers here share the same joy. This is genuinely a special place.”   The museum maintains an archival collection that includes historic records from the county and the cities of Lodi and Stockton, as well as books, maps and other items showcasing our county’s history. It features water rights records, more than 7,000 photographs, agricultural equipment from the 1880s to the 1970s, and extensive records of the Weber family and Lodi farmer-turned-philanthropist William G. Micke.

Another interesting aspect to SJCHM is its genealogy collection. It includes directories for Stockton, Lodi and other cities during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It boasts a collection of plat books that provide visual evidence of landholding from 1876 to 1919.    In addition to their exhibits and extensive artifacts, SJCHM also offers education programs that serve thousands of children each year. Most notable are their Valley Days, Pioneer School Days and Critter Corral. While the museum features permanent exhibits, there are some that change throughout the year. The newest exhibit is “Cloth as Community: Hmong Textiles in America”. It features 28 textiles – flower cloths and embroidered story cloths – by members of the Hmong community. A hmong flower cloth (Southeast Asia) is one of the world’s great textile traditions and is an excellent example of cloth as community. The exhibit opens Saturday, June 22, 2019, and will close Sunday, October 20, 2019.   Swanson said it’s important to support the museum so they can continue to preserve and exhibit the rich culture of San Joaquin County. The museum offers a membership to residents who want to connect with the fascinating stories of the county. Member benefits include free admission, parking, use of the research library, access to a newsletter, and much more. They also offer volunteer opportunities and host fundraising events throughout the year.   One upcoming fundraiser is

the Holt 75 Tractor Centennial Celebration. On Saturday, June 22, 2019, the museum will honor the family of Benjamin Holt with a celebration under the beautiful oak trees on the museum’s grounds. All the funds will support the museum’s exhibits, play areas, and awardwinning living history educational programs. For more information, call Kristina Swanson at (209) 331-2055.   “We want San Joaquin county residents to recognize the museum is their museum,” Swanson said. “To visit, volunteer, donate, or join. To want to come here to reflect on the past, and to look toward the future.” To learn more about membership, volunteer opportunities, sponsorships, how to donate, and other fundraising opportunities, please visit: www.sanjoaquinhistory.org.
