ummer is in full swing and so are the popular Lincoln Center LIVE! events. Our first of the season, the Wine Stroll, was held Friday, June 12. Hundreds came out to enjoy sipping, strolling and shopping – all while raising much needed funds for Child Abuse Prevention Council. Live music played throughout the center as guests strolled from store to store tasting wines from 26 different wineries, and enjoyed shopping for their summer wardrobe. Adding to the experience and ambiance was the beautiful art displayed throughout the center by Art Expressions, a traveling gallery.

wine bar…

incoln Cellar is a restaurant offering a unique experience in wine tasting and food pairing. As home to San Joaquin County’s only WineEmotion, a state-of-the-art wine dispensing system, Lincoln Cellar offers an opportunity for the knowledgeable connoisseur or the developing palate to easily find enjoyment and discovery in trying new wines. Add to that thoughtfully prepared, globally inspired dishes with wine in mind, and the combination equals bliss for the senses!

Alex Moreno, executive chef; Maria Mills and Susan Arismendi, owners; Alycia Moreno, manager

Upon entering Lincoln Cellar, you are greeted with several features that make the space comfortable and inviting. Sliding floor-to-ceiling doors open to expand the interior space to the outside, allowing the beautiful Stockton seasons to take center stage. If there is a chill in the air, a custom stone fireplace and hearth adds ambiance and coziness while guests relax with their favorite wine and comfort food. “We wanted to give a feeling of the calm you feel when you unwind in your favorite spot at home,” states co-owner Maria Mills. The expansive granite and hardwood wine bar is a nice centerpiece to the space, perfect for social interaction. “Engaging and socializing, we felt, was an important piece to making the whole food and wine tasting experience fun. So the idea translates into the design and layout of our space,” adds Susan Arismendi, co-owner. As the feature, and prominent focal point of Lincoln Cellar, the WineEmotion draws attention to itself without saying a word. Beauty and function combine in striking stainless steel and complimentary lighting to create a natural pull as guests move through the space. Simply choose a glass located below and insert your WineEmotion card. Then dispense a pour of two, four or six ounces into your glass.

WineEmotion is an exciting way to venture through different regions and varietals from the locally produced wines to the international. Wines rotate through the WineEmotion, giving guests a regular chance to try a new wine. To treat your taste buds further, Executive Chef Alex Moreno has created a locally sourced, seasonal menu to heighten the wine experience. “When we came together, we realized our passions for food and wine were aligned,” describes Moreno. Building on those passions, a unique menu of sharable entrees was born. “Creating a relationship with the local purveyors of produce, meats and seafood is at the top of my mind. We have all the elements of fine cuisine available to us right here in the Central Valley - fresh, bold flavors take wine pairing to a higher dimension of flavor,” he continues. Like the opportunity to find new favorite flavors by the glass at Lincoln Cellar, the same holds true with your plate. Each season is a chance to start a new adventure. Lincoln Cellar welcomes you for lunch and dinner, accepting reservations for large events and small parties. Take advantage of the private dining room for your next occasion. TheBRIGHT SIDE If we wait until we’re ready, we’ll be waiting for the rest of our lives. Local Teacher Congratulates Students Years Later

– Lemony Snicket

For the past 26 years, retired firstgrade teacher Lorrie Hoslett has sent cards to her former students celebrating their high school graduation. The graduating class of 2015 includes the last group of first-graders she taught at Mable Barron Elementary School before retiring in 2004. Lorrie buys all of her graduation cards at Best Wishes right here in Lincoln Center. She says, “I always get some letters back from parents or the kids. The kids will tell me what they are planning to do after high school or what they remember most about first grade.” Her granddaughter Allison, who happened to be in her very last first grade class said, “She was so caring towards every student. It’s so meaningful to a kid when a teacher, who you never thought you’d talk to again, is sending you a congratulations on your achievement.”

No-Fail Slow Cooker Lemon Garlic Chicken Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 4 hours Serves: 4 Ingredients • 4 lemons • 2-3 heads of garlic • 1 whole chicken • Fresh rosemary, or any fresh herbs • All-purpose steak seasoning or salt and pepper (Pappy’s works great!)

“This recipe is the easiest and everyone loves it! I saw it on Pinterest and have made it so many times. I actually made three whole chickens for my cooking club a few months ago and now all of my friends have made it at home for their families.” – Janelle Meyers

Instructions 1. Cut garlic heads and lemons in half and lay in bottom of slow cooker. (You don’t need to peel the garlic heads. Just cut whole ones in half.) Cut the bottoms off the lemons so they lay flat. 2. Add a sprig of rosemary, or any herbs. 3. Remove insides from chicken, rinse chicken and pat dry. 4. Season chicken well, inside and out, with all-purpose steak seasoning or salt and pepper. 5. Lay chicken on top of garlic and lemon slices and stuff the chicken with a garlic head cut in half, and a lemon cut in quarters. 6. Cover top of chicken with additional lemon slices and rosemary. 7. Turn slow cooker to high, and cook for about 4 hours. 8. Let chicken rest for about 15 minutes. 9. Remove from slow cooker, carve and serve.

Both businesses are located in Lincoln Center, and conveniently right across from each other. The Gattos have owned and operated Planet Beach since 2003, relocating the business to Lincoln Center in April 2014. Dan and Marvis Gatto Code 3 Wear, which was Owners, Planet Beach Automated Spa originally a police uniform and Code 3 Wear dry cleaning company, has by Caitlin Hamer been in its location since May 2014. Together, these two successful businesses that are open seven days a week take up much of the Gatto’s time. “We live together, we work together- people always ask us how we do it,” said Marvis, a Stockton native who admits they are both constantly thinking about their businesses even while they’re at home. “It takes patience,” she shared. “You’ve just got to give and take on things,” adds Dan, who worked for the Stockton Police Department for seventeen years before retiring medically. Their understanding of what it takes to work together sums up why their businesses are thriving. Since relocating to Lincoln Center, their Planet Beach store has been one of the most successful of the many franchises in the state. The automated day spa offers a variety of treatments, such as body wraps, weight management programs, infrared saunas, and tanning. all year round, meaning the Gattos spend much of their time there. Dan attributes much of the store’s success to its great location, noting that customers coming to the store can bring their spouses and children to enjoy the other offerings in the center while they shop. Marvis and Dan’s success is also due in part to their time away from their demanding businesses, as they understand they need to take time for themselves and their families. They have two children, two grandchildren, and an English bulldog that Marvis enjoys dressing up. “Our dog relaxes us,” says Marvis. “When we get home he’s just so happy to see us!” The pair also makes it a point to take short trips out of town when they can, and enjoy spending a couple of hours unplugged at the movies. Working together, whether you’re married to each other or not, really boils down to one thing: “We have the same vision of what we want,” said Dan. And with a partnership like that, they’re sure to have many more successful years ahead of them. n Dan’s clothing – Code 3 Wear Marvis’ clothing – Theadora Photos by Red Carpet Studios

Beat the Heat: Stay Hydrated! By Paul Waters, MD, Family Practice

Consistently Voted Best in Stockton

Whatever your plans may be for this summer, it’s important to remember to stay hydrated. With California’s long hot summer days, just a few glasses of water can be the difference between a day of fun in the sun and suffering from heat stroke. So how much is enough? There’s an easy way to tell if your fluid tank is running low. Check the appearance of your urine. If ’s it’s pale and clear, you’re probably pretty well-hydrated. If it’s dark, or cloudy, you may not be getting enough to drink. Medications may change the color of your urine, but you should know what’s normal for you.

Want lower prices?

Check out our

member pricing.

Also, don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink water. By the time you get thirsty, you’re likely already dehydrated. If you are simply hanging out outdoors or exercising for less than an hour, then water is your best option. If you are exercising for more than an hour, you may want to supplement your water intake with a sports drink to replace electrolytes.

Oh, It’s Summer Time. Little League Games, backyard BBQ’s and picnics in the park! Wonderful gatherings, coupled with lots of yummy food, means soda cans and water bottles going into the trash. Keep a trash bag handy so all of those recyclable materials can be gathered. And at the end of the day, drop them off at the recycling center, add to your curbside recycling, or better yet, give to the neighborhood little league team to cash in for their “Championship Game” party! It’s easy. Recycle.

If the Shoe Fits...

Buy It!

By Elizabeth Esau

S

ummer is here and you know what that means! It’s time to pack up your boots and and breakout the sandals, strappy heels and stylish flats. Here are the most popular summer shoe trends, and they are all available at Dennis Shea Shoes.

Women’s trends With paramount music festivals like Coachella, Outside Lands and Lollapalooza reaching record high ticket sales every year, the bohemian look has become the new face of summer! Influences from the 60s and 70s are back and prominent in today’s fashion. Gladiator sandals, or “glads” as they are referred to, come in all different styles from just above the ankle to just below the knee in a wide range of colors. We suggest styling with high waist shorts and a crop top or a flowing lightweight dress with a headpiece, long necklace and an assortment of rings.

This 70s favorite has made an exciting entry on the runway this summer. More designers are taking the beloved classic and redesigning it into a more edgy look. Available in several colors, these simple sandals can be paired with almost any outfit. Many recommend with jeans, rompers or lounge wear.

Dennis Shea, owner of Dennis Shea Shoes

For those always on the go, the pointed flat is an easy, attractive shoe to throw on in a hurry. Life doesn’t always go as planned so when things go array, you need to have a back up plan. The pointed flat can be worn with a suit, dress, shorts, skinny jeans or harem pants. Always keep a pair on hand!

Dinner parties, lunch dates or shopping with friends, your go to heel is one with an ankle strap. Supportive yet stylish and suitable for any occasion! Wear with cropped pants and blazer, a cocktail dress or nice jeans and a cute top.

Men’s Trends

For those seeking for a more lavish look, the penny loafer is your shoe. Appealing more toward the older generation, this elegant shoe speaks for itself. Sleek and sophisticated, penny loafers pair well with cocktail attire.

This ankle length desert boot is a must have, not only for summer but for all seasons. Originated in the 1950’s, the Chukka Boot was a sought after boot for its robust and simple design. Now, years later, the shoe is still a desired look, complimenting several different styles. Highly recommended to be worn with nice jeans, a button up and blazer.

The perfect casual shoe for the summer! Sperrys, commonly known as “boat shoes”, are a clean, classic shoe designed to be worn with shorts and t-shirt or khakis and a polo. They are easy to wear and available in many styles for men, women and children.

Stylish Shades for All

When it comes to sunglasses, not all shades are equal. By Stephanie Forbus

S

unglasses have come a long way – from practical and protective to a staple fashion accessory. These days you’re never fully accessorized without an amazing pair. Sunglass trends come and go (and come back around again) so don’t be afraid to repeat your favorite style from past decades! While many of the classic styles are still in, we are seeing interesting new trends emerging this year. Many styles and shapes work for both men and women and you’ll never truly know what works on you until you try them on. Not all frames are equal. There’s always a good reason to try on another. Too bright! Too dark! Too big! Too small! Take the time to try on as many pairs as needed to find “the one” for you! With all these new trends – and old trends back in style – you’ll find something you love. Let the knowledgeable staff at Great Spectacles and Meyers Fashion Optical help you pick out a stylish pair, whether trendy or timeless.

1This promotion is available for a limited time and may be withdrawn at any time. The promotional Annual Percentage Rate (APR) will be 1.99% and will not increase for the first 6 months after the date of closing. After the introductory period, the Annual Percentage Rate (APR) is variable and is based upon an index plus a margin. The APR will vary with Prime Rate (the index) as published in the Wall Street Journal. As of 6/1/2015, the variable rate for home equity lines of credit ranged from 4.00% APR to 5.25% APR. Higher rates may apply for lines secured by second homes/investment properties, lines without automatic payments from an F&M Bank checking, or with an LTV at or above 70%. The rate will not vary above 16% APR. Existing equity loans or lines are not eligible. Not all customers will qualify for this promotional offer. 2This APR is based on an owner occupied primary residence with a loan to value below 70% and automatic payments made from an F&M Bank checking account. Alternative rates and terms are available depending on your qualifications. 3Third party fees generally ranging from $150 to $1,500 may apply. Maximum loan-to-value ratio is 80.0%. No condos, co-ops and single or double wide manufactured homes. Annual fee of $75 which is waived in the first year and waived in future years, if you maintain an outstanding average daily balance of at least $20,000. Line has a 10 year interest-only payment draw period and a 15 year repayment period. During the interest-only period principal balance is not reduced. At the end of this period, your monthly payment will increase, possibly substantially, even if the interest rate stays the same because you will be required to pay down the outstanding principal balance. Always consider paying more than the minimum payment to pay down the principal. Property insurance is required. This information is accurate as of 6/1/2015 and is subject to change without notice. Ask us for the current index and margin. NMLS 435145.
