all is officially here - the weather is changing and the wardrobe in your closet is starting to transition. It’s been a hot summer of fun but that is what we love about living in Northern California ... the change of seasons. Of course, with this hot summer the drought continues along with an aggressive fire season. We are thankful for the firefighters and volunteers who are working tirelessly on the Butte, Rough and Valley wildfires, to name a few. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who has been, and continues to be affected by these fires.

1 This promotion is available for a limited time and may be withdrawn at any time. The promotional Annual Percentage Rate (APR) will be 1.99% and will not increase for the Ɠrst 6 months after the date of closing. After the introductory period, the APR is variable and is based upon an index plus a margin. The APR will vary with Prime Rate (the index) as published in the Wall Street Journal. As of 7/1/2015, the variable rate for home equity lines of credit ranged from 4.00% APR to 5.25% APR. Higher rates may apply for lines secured by second homes/investment properties, lines without automatic payments from a F&M Bank checking account, or with a loan-to-value (LTV) at or above 70%. The rate will not vary above 16% APR. Existing F&M Bank equity loans or lines are not eligible. Not all customers will qualify for this promotional offer. 2 This APR is based on an owner occupied primary residence with a LTV below 70% and automatic payments made from a F&M Bank checking account. Alternative rates and terms are available depending on your qualiƓcations. 3 Third party fees generally ranging from $150 to $1,500 may apply. Maximum LTV ratio is 80%. No condos, co-ops and single or double wide manufactured homes. Annual fee of $75 which is waived in the Ɠrst year and waived in future years, if you maintain an outstanding average daily balance of at least $20,000. Line has a 10 year interest-only payment draw period and a 15 year repayment period. During the interest-only period principal balance is not reduced. At the end of this period, your monthly payment will increase, possibly substantially, even if the interest rate stays the same because you will be required to pay down the outstanding principal balance. Always consider paying more than the minimum payment to pay down the principal. Property insurance is required. This information is accurate as of 7/1/2015 and is subject to change without notice. t’s always reassuring to know that business owners love what they do, especially when that business is focused on helping people achieve and maintain good health.

Owner, Marie Cottman and her staff

“It’s fun, what we get to do,” said Marie Cottman, Pharm. D., owner of Pacific Compounding Pharmacy, which makes customized medications for both people and pets. Pacific Compounding Pharmacy has been in business for nearly ten years, and has been in Lincoln Center since the pharmacy first opened. This past August, they remodeled and expanded their space, which means an improved reception area, a more accessible restroom, and two consultation rooms. Another addition is Dr. Kimberly Cockerham, an experienced MD who specializes in facial aesthetics and reconstructive surgery, and is on site for consultations a couple days a week. Patients who wish to repair skin damage from scarring or accidents, or who would like to combat aging, can speak with Dr. Cockerham about bioregenerative therapies. In addition, the pharmacy carries Rx Skin Therapy, which is a science-based, pharmaceutical grade, economical skin care line that was developed by a pharmacist.

Consultation Room at Pacific Compounding Pharmacy

In order to have a medication specially compounded for you, you must have a prescription from your doctor. From there, Pacific Compounding Pharmacy will fill the prescription to specifically meet the needs of the person who requests them. There is a lab on site, including a sterile room, where they compound the medications. The pharmacy has all the different ingredients needed in the lab. They do not duplicate commercially available products, but instead can create a custom order from the doctor by finding the right dosage for each person, or changing the way the medication is administered. For example, patients who cannot swallow capsules can instead be given their medications in liquid form, or as a topical. The pharmacy makes creams, eye drops, capsules, ointments, and suspensions.

The pharmacy doesn’t just fill prescriptions, either. “We pride ourselves on good patient education,” said Dr. Cottman. Consultations are offered on a variety of related topics, particularly bio-identical hormone replacement. Dr. Cottman focuses on helping women feel better as naturally as possible by identifying the underlying cause of their hormone imbalance and then addressing it directly. “We also need to help manage lifestylesleep, exercise, and meal plan- which is why we carry a pharmaceutical grade line of supplements, adrenal fatigue supplements, and the Take Shape For Life program.” Saliva testing for evaluating hormone balance for women and men is also offered. Dr. Cottman and her husband, who also works at the pharmacy, have two children, and a cat and a dog, so their lives are very full. Marie is also a Girl Scout leader, and when she has some down time, she enjoys gardening and scrapbooking. For a line of work that requires such attention to detail, Dr. Cottman sums up what she enjoys about her job with a lovely simplicity: “I like working with patients, and finding unique solutions.” That makes it safe to say that anyone who goes to Pacific Compounding Pharmacy will be treated n with the utmost courtesy and high quality care.

The KitchenSide I Julie Van Noate of Best Wishes

USA Pans

t’s the middle of September as I write this and we are in the process of unpacking Thanksgiving to put out on display. We paused thinking that even though we are preparing for that ONE day that all of us give thanks there are fires roaring though our state. Thankful one day? Let us be thankful everyday. Let us find a way to help. I hope and pray these fires are out by now but the devastation they have left behind and the people who are in need are still very real. So again, I know it’s early to be thinking about Thanksgiving but we’d like to help make the victims Thanksgiving as easy and nice as we can. For the month of October open your cupboards and bring in to Best Wishes any gently used kitchen items and gadgets that we will donate to help fill the shelves of someone in need. We will then offer you 25% off to replace your item with a new one or treat yourself to something else you may need or have always wanted from the KitchenSide! I know for sure I have baking dishes, measuring cups and spoons, cookies sheets and muffin pans that could use a new home. Imagine having nothing... What did you use in your kitchen today? THAT’S what they need. How do you even begin to start from scratch? Let’s n help them out!

Mammogram, massage, mimosa. One of these could save your life. Although breast cancer awareness has increased in recent years, breast cancer remains the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women. Nearly one out of every eight women is likely to develop breast cancer in her lifetime. The good news is that survival rates for breast cancer are improving. Like all cancers, early detection of breast cancer greatly improves the chances that it can be treated successfully. Women age 40 and older should have a screening mammogram every year. A mammogram is designed to find breast cancer before it starts causing symptoms, so women should never wait until they suspect symptoms of cancer. Women with a family history of breast cancer have a higher risk of being diagnosed, and are recommended to begin annual mammograms at age 30. Talk to your doctor today about your annual breast health screening. For more information, call St. Joseph’s Women’s Imaging Center at 209.466.5028 or visit StJosephsCares.org/mammo.

othing Bundt Cakes owner, Mike Robinson, his wife Beverly and daughter Cassie enjoy giving back to our community. Often, you will find Mike and his bundt team helping out the Child Abuse Prevention Council of San Joaquin along with other charitable organizations and educational programs. Recently, with the celebration of the bakery’s one-year anniversary, he donated ten percent of his week’s proceeds to the Child Abuse Prevention Council. During the month of October, Mike is focusing his attention on Breast Cancer Awareness. Recently he discovered a local non-profit organization that really spoke to his heart - Kids Taking a Stand. During the month of October, every “pink cake” sold in honor of breast cancer awareness month - Nothing Bundt Cakes will donate 20% of proceeds to Kids Taking a Stand. “We had such an incredible turnout during our birthday celebration week, that I am confidant we will be able to raise a good portion to donate to ‘The Kids’.” More information about Kids Taking A Stand on page 20. Beyond charity, Mike, who is affectionately known as the “Bundt King”, is also working with our new AHL Hockey Team, The Stockton Heat, to become the Official Cake of the Heat. Arena promotions, Birthday of the Night Cake, and Kids Birthday Club will be major focal points, as well as various promotions with players and specials for fans attending games. “We are really looking forward to this relationship as well,” states Mike. As Mike and his team move forward into their second year, they are excited for the future. “One of the many things I love about working in Lincoln Center is the strong support system. We are a family and every merchant does his or her part to help out another. The support doesn’t stop there, it radiates with the people of Stockton. It’s a truly wonderful sight to see. Breast Cancer Awareness Month by Patrick Dobson Vice President of Sims-Grupe Management

O

ver the eight months since losing my wife Melissa to breast cancer, and five years since losing my motherin-law Linda to breast cancer, I have realized as an observer, a caregiver, a husband, a son-in-law, that those with breast cancer are not only fighting this physically, but mentally as well. And every single day the fight continues.

Patrick, Brady, Melissa and Stella Dobson

“These women are enduring a fight WE cannot imagine.” – Patrick Dobson

Melissa Galvin-Dobson

As each month moved on and as October was inching forward, I felt it was my duty and purpose to stand up and create as much awareness as I could to ensure that the courageous bold fights that these two beautiful women endured does not go unnoticed - alongside the hundreds of thousands, no, actually millions of other women. To make sure this month of “pink” - even though some argue has been turned into a marketing tool - continues to thrive, and that we ALL wear Pink. Because it is real. It is very, very real. When someone you love is diagnosed with cancer, you start to question absolutely everything: what you do, what you say, who your friends are, how you parent, who you are. You question doctors and treatments and hospitals and healthcare. Not because you probably really question them - you’re just really scared of losing someone. You think about dying. You think about living. You doubt, you fear, and you breathe sighs of relief. You feel guilty when you have fun and when you go to work; you’re angry, you’re sad, and you’re grateful all at the same time. It plays with your head. And it made me realize this: Some days, I felt like there was overwhelmingly too much to say about my wife’s fight against breast cancer. Then, I felt like I had nothing to say - or that I didn’t have a right to say anything at all. Who am I to write about cancer? I didn’t have cancer; my wife had cancer. And that’s just it. People with cancer are fighting. THEY are fighting to one-day feel normal. To stop having to live in their ‘new normal’ to one-day return to ‘normal’ activities that we take for granted like: giving your children a bath, or riding a bike, or helping with homework, or being able to volunteer in your child’s first kindergarten class, or attend your eight-year-olds soccer games each week because it is just physically impossible to get there. Or just being able to enjoy your favorite meal, which has suddenly turned into the worst thing you have ever tasted. Or looking in the mirror and not ask why. Or wake up after chemo and remember the day before. Or not have to take any medicine. Or not have to have a doctor’s appointment scheduled. Or not have to lose your hair. Or not have people ask how you are doing. Or not have to wonder what gossip people are saying about the progression of the fight. Or hoping to fall asleep not having to pray with every inch of your soul that the cancer isn’t progressing - or - just praying to wake up one more time. And the list goes on ... beyond our realm of thinking unless you have endured this fight. These women are enduring a fight WE cannot imagine. I cannot imagine and I have been as close to this disease as possible. But still I don’t know. WE don’t know. I don’t understand. WE don’t understand. One thing that is for certain, one day we will have a cure! Wear Pink. Wear it proud. Smile at that beautiful woman and just know that she is the STRONGEST person n you have ever seen.

Understanding Her Health Needs by Leslie Brennan

H

ere at Artesian Natural Foods we understand the importance of women’s health. We carry natural products that support the many health issues that women commonly face such as breast cancer, menopause, hormonal imbalance, pre-natal nutrition and urinary tract imbalance. We even carry natural cosmetics. Breast cancer can be draining mentally, physically and emotionally. We want you to feel the best you can while fighting this awful disease. At Artesian Natural Foods we offer a wide variety of supplements to support you.

Mike and Leslie Brennan of Artesian Natural Foods

The onset of menopause can start as early as age thirty-five. Hot flashes, night sweats, weight gain and the feeling of being on an emotional roller coaster are very common although the severity can vary among women. There are many natural supplements that can support this transition. Some of the many supplements that can help are Black Cohosh, Dong Quai and Vitex. A healthy diet helps too and caffeine, sugar, even red meat can aggravate the condition. Many factors contribute to hormonal imbalance such as age, environmental toxicity and stress. We recommend testing to determine hormone levels. Pacific Compounding Pharmacy located right here in Lincoln Center offers hormone testing. For the most accurate readings we suggest saliva testing. A Blood test from your physician is another option. Artesian Natural Foods offers a variety of hormone support supplements that can help alleviate some of the discomfort. Proper pre-natal nutrition and supplementation are vital to the developing baby. Mother should feed herself as she wants to feed her baby. A well-balanced diet abundant in healthy vegetables and proteins and free of refined sugars is essential. The brands Garden of Life and New Chapter have excellent quality pre-natal supplements that are whole food nutrients and are best sellers here at Artesian. They provide nutrients that may be missing in a pregnant women’s diet. Urinary tract imbalance can be a problem for women of any age. They tend to be more common in menopausal women. A good probiotic directed at urinary health can be very helpful.

Artesian Natural Foods 145 Lincoln Center (209) 952-8787 artesiannaturalfoods.com Monday – Friday: 10:00 am – 6:30 pm Saturday: 9:30 am – 6:00 pm Sunday: 12:00 – 5:00 pm

Everyone wants to look their best with great looking skin and hair. We have a large selection of natural skin and hair care products here at Artesian. Included are hair dyes that contain fewer harsh chemicals. We have a selection of fragrance-free cosmetics, shampoos and conditioners for the chemically sensitive. Ingredients are easily read and understood. Many have organic ingredients and are lacking or very low in preservatives. Cleaner ingredients cause less irritation and reaction, especially when skin is sensitive. We’ve recently added a line of organic bamboo Ecowear by “Boody” just for fun. The under garments and socks for both men and women are made from fabric that is plant-based and pesticide free. Boody fabric carries the Ecocert Organic Certification. These products are seamless and very comfortable. Regardless of your individual needs our educated staff is here to help you. The Importance of Stretching-

and How to Incorporate it into Your Plan by Jillian Barlet B.S. Kinesiology Certified Pilates Instructor Personal Trainer

Jan Gilliland, Ben Mackie and Jillian Barlet of Ben Mackie Fitness

Y

ou hear it often, how important it is to stretch out your muscles. Whether you’re in a dedicated fitness routine or not, a regular stretching program in addition to strength training and cardio is a vital part of your well being. Regardless of the type of exercise you perform, stretching your muscles after your workout can help increase mobility and range of motion, which otherwise may have tightened up from excessive stress. Do’s and Don’ts of Stretching: • Stretch out large muscle groups AFTER your workout • Stretching is not a warm up for workouts • If you are unsure of what stretches to do, consider seeing a physical therapist or personal trainer for advice • You’re never too young or too old to stretch

Ben Mackie Fitness 840 W. Benjamin Holt Drive (209) 955-0360 www.benmackiefitness.com

My favorite form of cross training to my heavy weight lifting program is Pilates on the reformer. Most people are familiar with Pilates Mat classes, but the reformer is a machine that uses your body weight in addition to the resistance of springs. With the use of springs, the stretching exercises become an active stretch as if another individual was pushing against your jointshowever you’re in control, an ideal situation. It can be adjusted to fit your height, leg length and arm length, which is unlike any other piece of equipment. Pilates on the Reformer has very low impact on the joints and also incorporates many prone and supine exercises, which takes away the element of gravity pulling down on the joints. While there are many exercises on the reformer simply for stretching, you can also complete a total body workout on the machine. This form of cross training has helped me avoid injuries over the last 14 years. I highly recommend it to clients of all ages and backgrounds! For more information on Pilates sessions at Ben Mackie Fitness, please n call (209) 955-0360.

Raising Awareness for a Continuous Fight by Jackie Kromm

A

wareness and support for women battling breast cancer is something that goes beyond one particular month dedicated to the fight. October is a very special month aimed at bringing awareness to this devastating disease but for women fighting the fight it’s a daily battle 12 months out of the year. It’s this reason that we at Theadora feel strongly about empowering women. Whether it’s the desire to feel comfortable or supported in intimates and clothing we are committed to making sure women have what they need while fighting the fight. We carry products ranging from post surgical mastectomy camisoles with drainage tubes, to mastectomy bras and prosthetic fillers. Our knowledgeable staff is here to provide services and products that bring women comfort. I am a certified fitter and can guide you through the process with ease ensuring you will get the products you need to make you feel and look great.

Theadora Boutique 270 Lincoln Center (209) 474-7407 Monday – Saturday: 10:00 am – 6:00 pm Sunday: 12:00 pm – 5:00 pm

It’s all about celebrating women no matter what the cause. Women bonding together to help one another through times of trouble are a very powerful thing. Never underestimate the power of a woman! Especially those who are on a mission! Theadora Boutique, with the help of Market Tavern, is hosting our 2nd Annual Battle of the Bra’s event. The first event last October was a huge success and so it seemed only fitting to make this years fundraiser even bigger and better. The out pouring of support for Battle of the Bra’s last year was tremendous and actually gave me chills. Women battling cancer are the most courageous people I know and when fighting back there is no one tougher. Decorate a bra with your friends or coworkers to be auctioned off October 22 at Market Tavern. Be creative, get involved and help make a difference. For more information about our Battle of the Bra’s event visit Theadora Boutique’s Facebook page or give us a call at (209) 474-7407. n

“Kids Taking A Stand”started in 2007 with three children selling lemonade in their front yard one afternoon. As the name implies, these kids are raising money to fight cancer - particularly breast cancer, since the disease has personally affected each of their families. It all began shortly after Kriste Merin, of Stockton, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her two sons, Mason and Gavin, and their friend Sydney Seligman were bored one day and looking for something fun to do. They ransacked the pantry and sold snacks as well as lemonade in the front yard. That day they earned over $100! When they were finished they decided it would be great to donate the money to a worthy cause. The kids brainstormed several ideas and decided since breast cancer was something that had affected them so closely, they would like to help other patients and families deal with this life altering experience. Having seen the gratification that came with raising funds and helping others, Haley and Lexey Seligman and Brooke and Natalie Davis decided they wanted to be a part of the lemonade stand the following year. Now each year, more and more kids are joining in. Last year over 50 kids took part in the Lemonade Stand. Gavin Merin, 12 explains, “I do the lemonade stand every year because I love helping people. Every dollar we make helps patients in treatment. I look forward to that special day in my life every year.” The Lemonade Stand has become an annual tradition these families and their supporters look forward to every year. Since their beginning, “Kid’s Taking a Stand” has a raised over $110,000! Each year the children have decided to donate to specific funds, such as the St. Joseph’s COPE Fund and Patient Navigator program. Natalie Davis, 13 says, “I do this for the smiles on the faces of those affected by cancer. I love helping them and making them feel good about themselves.”

2014

2007

They are currently planning for their 9th Annual Lemonade Stand, which will take place on Sunday, October 25 in the front yards of the Merin and Seligman homes. Help support this cause by stopping by to purchase a glass, shirt and other goodies, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm at 5444 St. Andrews Drive, n Stockton. Donations can also be mailed to that address. Checks should be made payable to Community Foundation of San Joaquin.

How do you know if you have a hearing loss? by Debbie Bond

H

earing loss occurs to most people as they are. Hearing loss can be due to the aging process, exposure to loud noise, certain medications, infections, head or ear trauma, congenital (birth or prenatal) or hereditary factors, diseases, as well as a number of other causes. There are some 28 million people in the USA with hearing loss. Hearing loss is the single most common birth “defect” in America. Hearing loss in adults, particularly in seniors, is common.

You may have hearing loss if… • You hear people speaking but you have to strain to understand their words • You frequently ask people to repeat what they have said • You don’t laugh at jokes because you miss too much of the story or the punch line American Hearing Aids • You frequently complain that people mumble 880 W. Benjamin Holt Drive • You need to ask others about the details of a meeting (209) 227-6386 you just attended Monday – Friday: 9:00 am – 5:00 pm • You play the TV or radio louder than your friends, americanhearingaids.biz spouse or relatives • You cannot hear the doorbell or telephone • You find that looking at people when they speak to you makes it easier to understand them

If you have any of these symptoms, you should see a hearing aid specialist to get an Audiometric Evaluation (AE). This is a diagnostic hearing test performed by a licenses Hearing Aid Dispenser. It is not just a test in which you press a button when you hear a beep. Rather, an audiometric evaluation allows the hearing dispenser to determine the type and degree of your hearing loss and it tells how well or how poorly you understand speech. After all, speech is the single most important sound we listen to. Written hearing tests, “dial a hearing tests” and other online hearing tests are not 100% accurate, and are certainly not diagnostic tests, but may be utilized as screening tools. These screenings are usually free and can be scored within a few seconds. These types of tests may help validate that a hearing problem exists. So you’ve been tested, how is hearing loss measured? The scale accepted by most hearing professionals is as follows: Normal hearing (0 to 25 dB HL) Mid hearing loss (26 to 40 db HL) Moderate hearing loss (41 to 70 db HL) Severe hearing loss (71 to 90 db HL) Profound hearing loss (greater than 91 db HL) Don’t wait. Get your hearing tested today!
