“All you need is the plan, the road map, and the courage to press on to your destination.”- Earl Nightingale
374 Lincoln Center Stockton, CA 95207
When Phil Johnson graciously invited me to write this month’s editorial, I was honored and humbled. September’s Chronicle highlights the dynamic young leaders — all under 40 — who help to make Lincoln Center the special place that it is.

I couldn’t imagine a better quote for this issue that focuses on the young leaders at Lincoln Center. Along with the many you see throughout this issue, I fit into the category of those under 40 — at least for a few more years! This entire issue has been written, designed and photographed by that same demographic.

As our team sat down and brainstormed this issue, we wanted to highlight the incredible young talent that is the future of not only the Center but this community — and most importantly, give you the opportunity to get to know them. We are featuring young leaders who are here making an impact in food, fashion, fitness and more on a day-to-day basis. Leaders, who believe in being the forefront of fashion, pushing the expectation of food and giving you the opportunity to take care of yourself with the best healthcare, beauty and fitness choices. You may know their faces, but here you get to know their names, who they are and what they do. Lincoln Center has always embraced shopper trends and expectations, while staying true to our core values. The shopping center of today is driven by experience, personalization and relationships. And these young leaders are the trailblazers helping to propel us forward. The cover photo evokes a memory, or even just a laugh I’ve shared, with each and every one of these business owners. Last year, I took a trip to Soldier Field in Chicago to watch my beloved 49ers take on “da Bears” with my mate from the other side of the pond, Ben Mackie — a story for another day — but you catch my drift. And that’s part of the beauty of not only Lincoln Center but the city we live in…it is filled with genuine people. The people who make up this community, and Lincoln Center are amazing. I am so thankful to be able to work alongside all these brilliant and driven minds, and I am inspired every day by each and every one of them. I know in my heart that courageous leaders can have a lasting outcome for our community — as we have seen by those who have come before us, and who will come after us. As we wrap up the summer events here at Lincoln Center, ending with our most successful Car Show ever, we are reminded of the incredible support of all who are associated with the Center: owners, employees, patrons and more. I know I speak on behalf of not only all those featured in this issue, but everyone here at Lincoln Center, that it is our commitment to you to maintain a premier shopping and dining experience. Thank you for believing in us and our continued mission to give the community a clean, friendly, family fun and safe environment. Sincerely, Patrick Dobson, Vice President

All roads do lead back to Stockton and the Big L.
Distance truly does make the heart grow fonder!
I was born and raised in San Joaquin County and grew up hanging around Lincoln Center as a child; in fact, my grandfather worked, and at one point owned Village Barber Shop. I always had so much fun when I was a kid at the Center, but the best part was always my yearly birthday shopping trips to Campbell’s with my grandmother.
I was born and raised in Stockton; attended San Diego State; stayed for a few years after graduating; then moved to San Francisco where I met a guy from Stockton (my future husband, Garrett)…and the rest is history.
After high school at Tokay, I ventured to San Francisco, Los Angeles and back to the Bay Area before finding my way back home three years ago. I am extremely fortunate to be the Marketing Director for Lincoln Center. My favorite part about working here is that I’m surrounded by the most thoughtful, intelligent people, and am so thankful for the life experiences that have led me here — I am truly where I’m supposed to be. In my spare time I love to cook, travel and hang out with my boyfriend. My dachshund, Frank, accompanies me on many of my travels, and is the cutest, sweetest little guy around. Planning trips to new places and attending concerts are two of my favorite hobbies, although I do frequent Southern California often to see my dad and my best friend. Portland and Nashville are on the bucket list for 2018! Fun fact: I am one of sixteen grandchildren on my mom’s side of my family, and an only grandchild on my dad’s side.
I absolutely love my job! Working as the Events & Community Relations Director at Lincoln Center is a dream come true. We are so active in the community and coming from my previous job in the non-profit sector, I am thrilled to support all the other amazing non-profits in town. One of my favorite things to do when I’m not working is decorating and making old furniture look new again. Thankfully my husband is very handy — we see the vision, and he makes it happen! We just welcomed our second daughter, Elle, on August 12th. We love spending time with her and our 3-year-old daughter, Gracie. Gracie’s favorite place to hang out is Lincoln Center (go figure), specifically the playground, followed by a cookie from Podesto’s — always the way to end the day! Fun fact: On my bucket list is running a half marathon in the Spring. I have a love/hate relationship with running so I’m hoping that having it in print will hold me accountable!
CONRAD BORBA 35 | Graphic Designer STEPHANIE FORBUS 27 | Managing Editor Working on the Lincoln Center Chronicle for the past four years has been one of the most amazing experiences. I have met and built solid relationships with some of the best people in our community because of it – from the Lincoln Center merchants, to people in the community and even our photographers, writers and printers! Every one of them has become such an important part of my life. Having people stop me when I’m out and about to comment on an article they read in a past issue or how much they enjoyed filling out the crossword makes it all worth it! I have loved every second of this experience and can’t wait to see what else is in store for the Center and the Chronicle!
CHRISTYN GIANNINI 35 | Photographer Stockton and Lincoln Center are home to me! Lincoln Center is where I met my husband, it’s where we have girl’s night dinners and celebrate anniversaries, it’s where my husband goes when he needs a gift and where my kids love to enjoy an afternoon. It’s where I can get groceries, lunch, a gift certificate to my Gran’s favorite makeup counter, get my daughter her school uniform and grab a much-needed cup of coffee all without moving my car. How nice is that? Being a nature lover/admirer, sun seeker, artist and designer lends itself nicely to being a photographer. I love capturing a moment that otherwise may be forgotten. Time moves too quickly, and while I can’t slow it down, I can make this moment last forever with a photo.
CHRISTIANA FERRARI 23 | Writer I have been lucky to call Stockton home my entire life. After graduating from St. Mary’s High School, I went to University of the Pacific for my undergraduate degree and am now working on my graduate degree there as well. I have had the pleasure of writing stories for the Lincoln Center Chronicle the past few months and have loved getting to know many of the merchants better!

I was born here in Stockton, raised on the outskirts of town and currently reside in Modesto with my family. My love of graphic design brought me back into town to work for SASS! Public Relations, where I have been for the last year and a half. I am the lead designer for the Lincoln Center Chronicle. Although a lot of work goes into each issue, I love the feeling when the latest issue is printed and in my hands. Working here at Lincoln Center has been awesome. I enjoy meeting new people and love the convenience and variety the Center has to offer.
KATIE KISHI 23 | Writer I was born and raised in Lodi and attended Jim Elliot Christian High School. I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism & Media Studies from CSU Monterey Bay in 2016. Writing started as an outlet for my thoughts. It then became something out of which I wanted to make a career. I love writing because it allows me to organize the details of an event or a person’s story and communicate them with the world. I currently work for SASS! Public Relations and I absolutely love it. Being located in Lincoln Center is a great opportunity to meet new people, see familiar faces, and be a part of a community. I love that the Center has everything I need all in one place.
DARIO LEVENTINI 25 | Photographer Growing up in little Lodi with 3 generations of grape farmers before me, I never would have dreamt I would become a photographer and start a business. Whether I am capturing a couples most special wedding day, or photographing business owners for branding, I am capturing people and showing them the best versions of themselves. I love what I do but more importantly I love the people I get to meet and lives I get to be a part of and I get to call it “work”! When I am not photographing a wine country wedding or a corporate event in downtown San Francisco, you can find me eating & drinking my way through whatever area I am currently in. elping our customers by giving them undivided, one-on-one attention and support is so important to me and our employees. I love seeing our customers outside of work and hearing them tell me that the shoes I fit them with took away their foot or leg pain or how much our run group has changed their life. Over the course of the six years I’ve worked at Fleet Feet I have seen the most amazing customer transformations. Over the years, I have run seven half marathons. I love the satisfaction that I feel when I cross the finish line. My favorite race is Avenue of the Vines that takes place in Woodbridge every May. You can’t beat a race that takes place completely on flat ground and has wine waiting for you at the finish line!

e’ve been working at Best Wishes together for three years and have become the best of friends. We have bonded both inside and outside of work. We are so thankful for Best Wishes and the friendship and memories we have made throughout the years. Everyone we work with here is so creative and it’s fun for us to see the look on our customers’ faces as they enjoy a themed display that we have spent hours perfecting. We love giving them inspiration for their own decorating and piecing together things they may not have thought about on their own. Fun fact: Ally was the mastermind behind the entire Lincoln Center Snow Village last year! She spent many, many hours creating the festive Christmas display – and will be doing it again this year! Stop by the North Pole, 265 Lincoln Center, to see her work starting in November. LINCOLN CENTER CHRONICLE | SEPTEMBER 2017
YOUNG LEA DER S
EBONY JOHNSON 29 Visual Lead at Theadora Boutique What is one thing you are most proud of? I'm very much proud of the woman that I've grown to be. What do you like to do on your days off? I really enjoy going to the Farmers Market and also fishing. Describe yourself using three words. Diligent, Sincere, Witty Do you have any pets? I have a Miniature Pincher/Chihuahua Hybrid named Rahpsody What’s on your bucket list? Being that I'm a huge foodie my boyfriend and I have a deal that we will drive across the USA and do the Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives food tour! What do you like to do for fun? Honestly, I'm smitten with a good coffee and hitting my favorite local thrift stores here in town. What is your favorite thing about working at Theadora? Our customers are what make our store what it is. Aside from that I would have to say that I really enjoy attending market and putting together a merchandising story per season. How did you get into the fashion industry? I knew from a young age that I would be in the industry in some way but for me I was introduced to the back story of the industry when I used to model. Not so much my thing but I was able to see the industry from all angles and I knew that I really loved the creative freedom of it all. I decided to study Fashion Merchandising. What item at Theadora can your customers just not get enough of? When I first started here at Theadora our Marlies Dekker bra was hands down the IT item here in
store! But we have gained a huge following for our dresses, specifically our Joseph Ribkoff collection. Who is your fashion icon? I would have to say it’s a tie between Diana Ross and Madonna. When did your passion for fashion begin? As a child, I remember my mom and I would get into it every morning before school because I never wanted to wear what she picked out. I feel like since I was the only girl I was raised extra girly and I was very opinionated about what I wore. I also remember saving all my mom’s scrap fabric so I could make my own outfits for my Barbie's and it just continued from there. As a sophomore in high school I was the President of our school’s Fashion Club and I made it a point to really educate my peers on the industry and have an open forum where we could all get together and talk fashion. What’s been the most fun or satisfying part of working at Theadora? Every aspect of my job is fun! It never feels like work and that's what makes Theadora so special. If I had to pin point one thing that really makes work satisfying I’d have to say it would be our eclectic group of customers. What’s your favorite trend from the past that you would love to see come back around? It’s happening now! The 70's are hands down my favorite fashion decade! From jumbo bell bottoms to big hair, over the top prints, wrap dresses... the list goes on and on. The 70's were so easy yet still so complex. What’s your must-have piece for this Fall? One word... pantsuits. I'm in love! I find that this trend has been around forever. This fall it’s all about structure and a balance between feminine and masculine all in one outfit AKA the perfect pantsuit. n

he energy was at an all-time high as the Young Leaders who own businesses in Lincoln Center gathered at Midgley's Public House for the September Chronicle cover shoot. What really became evident during this round up of these young entrepreneurs, was the recognition of the drive, creativity, enthusiasm and passion that they all possess. They are hardworking, smart, love their community and give back in so many ways. And most of all, they represent the growing number of young business owners who are willing to not only build their businesses, but reinvent them as they go along and provide Lincoln Center shoppers with new, fresh ideas. We have a wealth of talent in these business owners and we are proud to feature them in this issue of Young Leaders in food, fashion, fitness and more.

My mother and father should take all the credit – they are still working fulltime today.

One of my favorite memories at Lincoln Center was during my first year in business. Lincoln High School art students chalked the sidewalk here in the Center and displayed their work. Many of the kids were my former students, which brought my teaching experience and my store together. I loved seeing that connection and seeing that the students were flourishing. Teaching is so rewarding like that!

early nine years ago, Anthony Jensen received the opportunity to work at DeVons Jewelers here in Lincoln Center. Anthony gained his sales experience from selling Subarus after finishing college at Montana State University, Billings. Once he migrated back to California, he wasn't sure about the direction he wanted to take his career. But Anthony was determined to find a perfect fit. Through a friend-of-a-friend, he started working at DeVons as a part-time ring cleaner during the holiday season. Two years later he found himself as a full-time employee. For Anthony, DeVons is so much more than a job. DeVons started in 1929 in Sacramento, Ca and is still run by the Merksamer family. Six years ago, the company opened its stock to its employees, making it fully owned and operated by employees. This allowed people like Anthony to make a career out of the business’s success. Investing in its employees doesn't stop there. When Anthony first became a full-time employee in 2011, he received the most credible certification from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). GIA is the fore founder of diamond grading and the most respected lab in the world. After being certified, the rest is history. So here he is, nine years into his career, married with two children. Of course, we had to ask what his favorite thing about his job is. His answer? The customers. "Selling jewelry compared to selling cars is so much more fun! Being able to help in the process of a proposal usually leads to birthdays, anniversaries and babies. I love that I have the opportunity to turn a customer into a friend — and that goes beyond the diamonds and jewelry." n Anthony's Fun Facts about Jewelry: Favorite Diamond Cut: round Biggest Trends Right Now: • Halo's • Yellow gold is making a comeback in a big way • Cut of the Year: pear shaped diamond • Color of the Year: green gemstones

We love that most of our family is right here in the Center. With our parents owning Payter’s Grill and our brother, Adam, owning David’s Pizza in Lincoln Center, you never know who will show up in our store – we all love supporting each other. It is a blessing to both of us, being moms of young children, that we can bring our kids to work with us most days and are able to watch them grow up right here at Zuesters. Kindra even met her new husband, Bryan, here in the Center! So, the Center is very near and dear to both of us and our families.

In my spare time, I dance as much as I can. I started dancing right after high school and focused on Tahitian and Hula dancing for 8 years. We performed at competitions and Luaus all over California. When I moved back to Northern California I got involved in hip hop dancing. Now I perform for different artists and shows in the area!

y very first job years ago was at Jamba Juice here in the Center! It’s fun to be back – I’ve been working at McCaulou’s since we opened. It’s great seeing how much our community loves the store and all we have to offer! We have many regular customers and its fun getting to know them by name and learn more about them every time they come in. They are always surprised when I remember what they bought the last time they came in. I find that getting to know my customers really helps them love what they buy.
Fun fact: I spend a lot of my time off reading. I consider myself a book worm and became hooked at a young age. In the last 20 years, I have read over 2,000 books!

I have met so many amazing people from all walks of life here. I really enjoy getting to know the regulars that we see not only at our business, but at all the shops. It brings a different kind of joy when someone recognizes you by name outside of work.

’m proud to be the fourth generation contributing to the family business here in Lincoln Center. My family has been in the grocery business for 47 years, so I have literally grown up here in the Center. I have a lot of memories here – working as a little girl with my grandparents at their store Podesto’s Market, coming to Friday Night LIVE events year after year, and more recently the Brickwalk has become a favorite hangout spot for my friends and me. B
en Mackie, owner of Ben Mackie Fitness, has quite the story behind his journey as an entrepreneur.
Ben was born in England, where he spent most of his early life. He played professional soccer and served in the British Army as a physical trainer. It was through this experience that Ben found his passion for educating others in health and fitness. In 2006 he decided to use his experience in the army to earn his certification at Premier Training International, a prestigious school in diet, nutrition and sports massage. There he gained all the necessary knowledge to grow his passion. After some time working and training in Los Angeles, Ben saw an opportunity to move to Stockton and started growing his network of people in the local community. He coached club soccer at the University of the Pacific and continued his passion for personal training. Ben soon realized the need for elite personal training in Stockton. He envisioned a high-quality product and client experience that met people’s specific wants and needs. Ben emphasized the location of his gym in order to target the right clients. He felt that Lincoln Center was the perfect spot to complete his vision. With high goals, qualified trainers and the newest fitness trends, Ben has been able to continuously grow his business. “The best part of being a business owner is the opportunity to meet all different walks of life, on top of helping others achieve happier and healthier lives,” he said. Ben continues to broaden his horizons with a new addition to Lincoln Center, Ben Mackie Spin & Movement. He is excited to bring the niche market of indoor cycling, barre and yoga to Stockton for the first time. His love for his clients and his social bond with other merchants has made his experience very enjoyable. He hopes to attract both new and existing clients through his new venture. We wish Ben the best of luck as he continues to follow his passion to help others! n

was born in Torrance, CA and raised in Long Beach. Before I was born, my parents purchased an independent motel in Long Beach after my dad was laid off from a job he had for 33 years. This was one of the reasons I chose to be an entrepreneur. I always knew I wanted to be in charge of my own future and depend on myself.
I try to give back to the community in any way possible – from AdoptA-Child to Make-A-Wish Foundation and many more. One of the most memorable moments of being able to give back was when I saw a post on Facebook about a young boy who had found a wallet with money in it. The boy had also recently lost his own wallet filled with $100 worth of cash and gift cards, but turned in the one he found anyway in hopes of finding its owner. Upon reading this, I immediately contacted his mom who posted on Facebook about her son’s honesty. I told her to come in with her son, where I gave him a crisp new $100 bill. He was so happy and I loved being able to reward him for doing the right thing. Fun Fact: I’m an outdoorsy, camper, adventurous, jump off a bridge with a bungee cord, speed around a race track, kind of guy. Not sure if you’d call that fun or crazy!

Last month wrapped up the 2017 Lincoln Center summer event season, and what a time! We would like to extend a big thank you to our sponsors: Mercedes-Benz of Stockton and Big Valley Ford Lincoln. Our events wouldn’t be possible without either of these amazing local businesses. The June Wine Stroll was a great turnout albeit the heat — with over 20 local participating wineries and breweries, the event raised much-needed funds for Haven of Peace. Every Fright Night in July was a hit, over and over again. From the rock-climbing wall to The Summit Band, Movie night and some of our favorite acoustic bands in town — we thank the community for joining us for these great events. The Classic Car Show in August was an even bigger hit than ever before. The classic cars took attendees back in time, all while enjoying music from Whiskey Kiss, Group Therapy of Lodi & New and Used. They indulged in the Midgley’s Public House beer and food tent — all while supporting money raised for the Lincoln Center Scholarship Fund. Thank you to the community for coming out to celebrate summer with us!
Thank you to our sponsors:

Sales Associate at Artesian Natural Foods How long have you worked at Artesian Natural Foods? 8 years What do you like to do on your days off? I love to take day trips to the Bay Area, go hiking or visit my niece in Sacramento. What is your favorite food? Vietnamese (Pho & Bahn mi) or Thai (Panang curry) Describe yourself using three words. Quirky, curious, optimistic Do you have any pets? I have a tuxedo cat named Sofie. How long have you lived in San Joaquin County? I have lived here most of my life. I was born and raised in Lodi, and spent about a year each in San Francisco and the Seattle area after high school before moving back to Stockton in 2008. What’s on your bucket list? I would love to travel to all 50 states (6 down, 44 to go) and many more countries; top of the list currently is Vietnam or Japan. What do you like to do for fun? I love to read, go for walks, make jewelry, collage, listen to podcasts and cook for my family. What is your dream vacation? I think it would be fun to visit Iceland and Norway to sleep under the Northern Lights one day. Do you use essential oils? If so, which is your favorite? I love essential oils! I still have the very first bottle I bought about 10 years ago in San Francisco: geranium. Today my favorites are sandalwood,
bergamot and a peppermint/rosemary/vanilla blend inspired by Crunchy Mama Bear. What is your favorite product at Artesian Natural Foods? That's tough! But off the top of my head, probiotics. It's exciting how much research is advancing on the role of our microbiome to our overall health. I love drinking Kombucha! We’ve noticed the customer service at Artesian is stellar, why is that so important to you all? For as long as I've worked here that's always been our priority. It's crucial, and through that we earn our customers trust. Having been a presence in the community for over 40 years, we at Artesian pride ourselves in helping our customers with their health and wellness needs. It's gratifying to know people leave here with the tools they need, empowering them to take their health into their own hands. Are there any unique items available at Artesian? So many! We carry quite a few specialty items, specifically groceries for people with food allergies or dietary restrictions. Our supplements range from multivitamins, to protein mixes, green superfoods, homeopathics, hormonal supports for men & women, to digestive health products such as enzymes, probiotics and fiber. We also stock an extensive skincare selection; one local favorite is Crunchy Mama Bear's skincare line. Do you have a memorable customer story? There have been quite a few over the years. Most recently, a customer shared his experience with me about his journey of detoxing his body of Candida. A former sugar-addict, his testimony of cutting refined sugars and starches out of his diet to heal his gut is pretty remarkable. I love how often my customers teach me on a daily basis. They challenge me to do my own research and, in turn, help others. n

YOUNG LEA DER S Lindell insisted on taking a door-to-door approach to build a thriving business, and at 52 years old, his relationships were built from scratch. After 17 years of lightly encouraging (or perhaps strongly convincing) Kate to join the team and eventually take ownership of the firm, she propositioned her father to consider other options. “If I’m unable to build this business for myself within a year, I want you to choose someone else,” Kate told her father. And just like her hard-working dad did two decides prior, Kate began knocking on Stockton doors and further developing her entrepreneurial tactics. Kate confesses, “It was a very humbling time, talking to people who didn’t want to talk to me. Upon every temptation to back out, I thought of my father – who had so much to lose at that time, with two mortgages and two kids in college. He didn’t quit; neither would I. There was no plan B.” Kate was encouraged by her progress, and after the first year, was ready to learn the logistics of taking over the Edward Jones branch. The time with her father has been priceless for their relationship and their clients. “My dad brought clients to retirement; I bring them through retirement.”

t’s a warm Stockton evening and most are cranking up the AC and kicking up their feet. Financial Advisor Kate Lindell, however, is only beginning her nightly routine after a taxing (pun totally intended) yet rewarding day at Edward Jones. With a new pair of Fleet Feet shoes and Meyers Optical shades, Kate’s evening cool-down begins. Upon the return of a casual 7-mile run, she begins planning her next venture with local non-profit God Speed Track and Field Club, a Christian youth organization Kate discovered while working out at Lincoln High. With balanced interests in work, fitness, and charity, Kate takes advantage of many opportunities Stockton offers its residents and serves as a shining example of how Stockton’s young professionals are making lasting changes in our city. Kate’s journey into asset management began with family ties. Her mother worked as a Branch Office Assistant before a cross-country move to California, and once they settled in Stockton, Kate’s father was recruited to join Edward Jones to start the Stockton office. While others in the industry are handed leads and client lists, Mr.

The pressure of providing advice and strategic planning for others is thrilling for Kate, and her mind is constantly churning with portfolio solutions. But because this go-getter doesn’t do well with “down-time,” she says, many of her professional brainstorming sessions occur after the Edward Jones doors close. From 5:45am yoga classes to nightly runs, Kate stays balanced and focused through an intentional health-centered routine. “Stockton is improving how it brings fitness communities together,” she says. “The #werunstockton movement (see Facebook and Instagram) for example, documents a group who has set out to run every street in Stockton, in an attempt to share a message of hope and bring encouragement to our neighborhoods and our residents.” Today, Kate and Branch Office Assistant, Jennifer Thomas serve many friends, families, and community members out of their Lincoln Center office, a spot they plan to love for many years to come. “Our clients appreciate our space here. They’re able to stop by on their way to grocery shopping or fitness class. We’ve been approached by business parks, but no space compares to Lincoln Center!” Kate also adds that her whole life is “done at Lincoln Center” – from nail and hair appointments to grocery shopping, she’s thankful for the one-stop-shops that accommodate her busy schedule" When asked for her best piece of financial advice, Kate simply replies, “Come see me!” Thanks, Kate, we’d love to. n

hen frequent Domo customers walk into the restaurant, they often ask, “Is Anthony working today?” Anthony Allen is one of Domo’s most popular employees – he creates a unique experience for every customer. Anthony has worked at Domo since it originated over seven years ago. He is known for his vibrant personality and distinct style. As Head Bartender, he gets to experiment with different drinks and create his own for the menu. He focuses on presentation, saying that he likes to give customers something they can’t get anywhere else. “I like to use very bold color choices because it makes it memorable,” said Anthony. For example, the bright-colored “Hello Kitty,” a customer favorite, is a mixture of grapefruit vodka, X-Rated, Watermelon Pucker and Sprite. Anthony garnishes the drink with his signature cherry blossom carved out of lemon rind.
32
Before coming to Domo, Anthony worked for several corporate restaurants. He mentions that working for a local business in Lincoln Center is more laid back. “A place like this gives me a lot of freedom without having general managers and district managers to worry about. It allows me to be a bit more of myself,” he said. Being in Lincoln Center, Domo has a loyal community of customers. “The clientele we get here is definitely a fun niche. Lincoln Center has been nice because it has its own reputation and history and there are a lot of people who faithfully come to the center because it’s their routine,” said Anthony. Not only does Domo have a family-feel, it allows Anthony to do other things he enjoys. He is an active member of the Stockton Community Theatre and performs in shows. He was also nominated for an Elly, an award honoring outstanding achievements of community theaters and artists in the Sacramento area. Customers may love seeing Anthony, but he enjoys seeing familiar faces too. He notes that one of the best parts about being in Lincoln Center is getting to know people and freely and creatively expressing himself. n

What is one thing you are most proud of? Stockton’s perception of our vision with food and beverage. The support from the community has been overwhelmingly positive.
What is your drink of choice? That’s a loaded question. Honestly, there are so many elements to enjoying a drink but the true art is balancing it with your food choices and environment. It really depends on where I am and what I’ll be eating. I’m forever eating…
How long have you worked at Market Tavern? I was lucky enough to be handpicked by Phil Wong and Nicolas Diarenzo in the beginning stages. Market Tavern will be 4 years old in October and Prime Table will be one in December. What is your favorite food? I’ve thought about selling my soul for pizza. Is there a recovery group? Hi my name is Arezou Soleimani and I’m addicted to pizza. Describe yourself using three words. Loyal, Competitive, and Brash Who are the people that matter most to you? My sister, my parents, Mathew Wood and Bryan Laber. They belong to me. They pick me up, they motivate me to be a better person and defend me to the ends of the earth. What is your favorite thing about working at Market Tavern and Prime Table? Phil Wong and Nicholas Diarenzo. Working for two progressive people who never compromise the exclusive ingredients they use and never cut corners. They push and challenge me to be better every single day.
What do you enjoy the most about bar tending in the Center? How safe we are. I love knowing that people understand that we are a restaurant first. Our bar is fun and lively, but our guests are classy and well behaved. Where does your inspiration for your cocktails come from? The world around me. We live in the most agriculturally rich region in the world and many still buy frozen, processed and preservative laden products from everywhere else! My inspiration comes from keeping it simple. It’s not a fresh craft cocktail if you start with pre-flavored “peach whiskey.” Make your own! What are you most proud of with the drinks you serve? I love that I can tell everyone where the ingredients come from. I love it when customers watch us juice fruit or pluck edible flowers. They really appreciate all the hard prep work that we do every morning! n

YOUNG LEA DER S Michael & Laci Midgley MIDGLEY'S PUBLIC HOUSE
39 38
By: Katie Kishi
I
t doesn’t take much to see Michael and Laci Midgley’s passion for the community. As the owners of Midgley’s Public House, they strive to have a personal relationship not only with Lincoln Center, but with the Stockton community as a whole. Head Chef Michael Midgley always wanted to own a restaurant, but the first three years of Midgley’s Public House has been more than he ever dreamed of. When looking for a location for his restaurant, Lincoln Center was the perfect fit – and has been supporting him ever since. The Midgleys can’t say enough positive things about Lincoln Center. “They have done nothing but facilitate our success,” said Laci. Another part of the restaurant’s success is credited to Michael’s appearance on reality television. He was a winner of Cutthroat Kitchen and a contestant on Top Chef. On his way to earning “celebrity chef” status, he appeared as a judge on Knife Fight and Top Chef Masters. The couple also competed on Restaurant Startup.
The Midgleys always try to incorporate Lincoln Center in promotions, such as on social media and Michael’s radio show, “Mondays with Midgley” on KJOY.
These experiences in the spotlight have opened many opportunities for the Midgleys. Midgley’s Public House continues to gain exposure and attract customers from great distances.
Living just down the street from Lincoln Center, the businesses play important roles in the Midgley family. “Our kids go to school right next to the Center – we have home, school, work, shopping at Podesto’s – everything’s right here,” said Michael.
“Celebrity Chef” is not Michael’s only title, though. He is also an official Brand Ambassador for Certified Angus Beef. Under this name, he gets to “geek out on beef” at conferences and implement what he learns into his own restaurant. His favorite meal to make – the barrel steak sandwich and prime rib. Michael and Laci have both worked in other areas around town, but they say nothing compares to the benefits of being in Lincoln Center. “The people in the Lincoln Center office always make sure they drive traffic to businesses,” said Michael. “They have an awesome team that’s building on everybody’s success.”
“We are literally neighbors of the Center and we believe in supporting our neighbors,” added Laci. Aside from supporting fellow Lincoln Center businesses, the Midgleys give back to the greater Stockton community. They do an annual golf tournament to benefit First Tee of San Joaquin and donate to local charities every month in the form of dinners, gift cards and auctions. “We believe that if we do as much as we can for our community then our community will support us,” they said. “Our success is success for the community.” n

oving Planet Beach to Lincoln Center has been so positive for us and our members. It gives us a place to call home. I enjoy the atmosphere in Lincoln Center and the positivity it brings to Stockton. I love the fact that we, as a Center, come together and do great things for our community. And, who doesn’t love the summer events here?
Aside from donating to various organizations and charities, we volunteer at the local Emergency Food Bank and take part in donation drives throughout the year. I love volunteering on the softball field too. For the last five years, I’ve helped out with the varsity softball teams at Cesar Chavez High School and Stagg High School. Our goal is to help the girls stay on track and lead them to making positive decisions on and off the field. When I am not working, I love being outdoors, camping and playing softball.

Take it Easy on Your Shoulders this Fall
I
By Jaicharan Iyengar, MD, Board-Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon
With the end of summer near, and cooler temperatures on the horizon, comes an invitation to go out and enjoy the great outdoors. Whether you are playing sports, or finally tackling those backyard projects, there’s no end to the list of things to do. As an orthopedic surgeon, I encourage you to play it safe and be mindful of your shoulders. Of all the joints in the body, the shoulder joint has the greatest range of motion, making it essential for many sports and daily activities, but also vulnerable to injury. In addition to sports that involve throwing, any repetitive overhead activity such as hammering, painting, and doing yard-work can put a lot of stress on your shoulders. The important thing to remember is that if you feel pain, do not attempt to play or work through it. Doing so could add to your injury. Instead, stop the activity and give your shoulder a rest. Apply ice and take over-the-counter pain medication. If the pain is sudden and severe, or does not improve within a week with home treatment, ask your doctor for a referral to an orthopedic specialist. Don’t let shoulder pain throw a wrench into your fall plans. Be mindful of any joint pain you feel and rest when you need to.
Dr. Iyengar is a nationally-recognized orthopaedic surgeon practicing with Alpine Orthopaedic Medical Group. Dr. Iyengar specializes in surgical and non-surgical care of the shoulder, elbow and knee. He is also the Team Physician for the University of Pacific Tigers and Stockton Ports. To learn more about Dr. Iyengar, visit alpineorthopaedic.com or call 209.948.3333.

was born and raised in Stockton and take great pride in this city! I have built great friendships since I started working in the Center over 14 years ago. I started out working at Campbell’s for nine years and after that was lucky enough to stay in Lincoln Center and come to work for Gary Long! It’s fun to see customers come in here that recognize me from Campbell’s.

When I’m not working, chances are you will find me fishing, playing paintball or airsoft with my friends! Fun fact: My wife, Liz, and I adopted our rescue dog Miles from the very first Bow Wow Meow event held here in Lincoln Center many years ago. He has been the best addition to our family!
