am so stoked for all the pumpkin patches & orchards to open for the fall season. Working on this edition brought back a lot of wonderful fall memories we’ve made since starting our family, and I happily took several computer breaks to flip through pictures of them on my phone. A couple of years ago we took Kenny to Vala’s for his first trip to the pumpkin patch. I had Kenny strapped to me in the baby carrier while we were picking apples in the orchard, when he suddenly lunged forward and grabbed a perfect, pink apple right off the tree. He had just turned one and we hadn’t introduced apples to him yet, but he knew exactly what to do with it. It was comical how determined he was to eat that apple. He refused to let it go and ate it right down to the core. Ever since then, apples have been one of his favorite foods, and he eats one almost every day. On page 29 is an ad and coupon for Vala’s Pumpkin Patch & Apple Orchard. Season open is September 13! Grab the coupon now and stick

Adventure. You can learn more about Arbor Day Farm’s happenings on pages 24-25. In the calendar section (pages 41-43), you’ll also find an expanded list of patches, farms, & orchards all within a couple hours drive from Lincoln. Each patch is uniquely different in what they offer, and we enjoy visiting a few different ones each year as part of our family’s pumpkin patch traditions. Lincoln Kids! Matthew Dauel, 11 Matthew Dauel is eleven years old and is in the 6th grade at Lux Middle School. He loves being creative and spends much of his time drawing, painting, or building elaborate structures in Minecraft. He showed a strong creative side from the time he was very young. He began art lessons with Art Academy-Lincoln about four years ago and just loves it. It allows him to try a variety of things that he may not have been exposed to at home or in school. “Endangered World” is a great example of that. Matt loves animals and the panda is one of his favorites. Matt is busy with scouting this year as well. He is a Boy Scout with Troop 93 and has had a blast attending scout camp this summer, learning many new skills, and helping the community. Matt also enjoys going camping with his parents, Joyce and Jeremy Dauel, and spends the summer swimming, fishing, and making s’mores. He loves exploring the places they visit with his dog, Cooper. The rest of his time is spent cheering on the Kansas City Royals, listening to music, watching gaming videos, and hanging out with his friends.

Spanish Immersion For Kids! Aventuras Spanish Immersion Program for Young Children

“The limits of my language are the limits of my world.” —Ludwig Wittgenstein

J

ust a few short months ago, Aventuras opened its doors to its first class of preschoolers. The program teaches age-appropriate curriculum, entirely in Spanish, during a time when children’s brains are most developmentally prepared to learn language. Children play games, eat snacks, make arts and crafts, conduct science experiments, study math concepts, and learn universal social and daily life skills—all in Spanish. Children learn the language without even thinking about it. Research shows many benefits to learning a second language at an early age, among them: •• Improved fluency, minimized or non-existent accent •• Increased problem-solving, multitasking, critical thinking, and mathematic skills

Children make indoor “nieve” (snow) during a unit on weather at Aventuras.

•• Improved listening & concentration •• Enhanced creativity, memory, and mental flexibility •• Ease in learning additional languages, including proficiency of native language •• Higher standardized test scores •• Greater workplace marketability and increased career opportunities Luis and Angela Gonzalez wanted to raise their three children in a bilingual household, but found their children’s exposure to English far out-

weighed their exposure to Spanish. They quickly discovered they needed to do more for their children to be truly bilingual. They looked for classes and found the type of learning environment they desired did not exist in Lincoln—so they set out to create it, and Aventuras was born. Immersion is key. The amount of time a child is exposed to a language directly correlates to the level of language proficiency they gain. One of the best ways for a young child

to learn a language is to hear others speaking it fluently and to gain context through face-to-face communication and social interaction. Communicating with the teachers at Aventuras is the children’s greatest resource to learning Spanish. Since their grand opening in January, Aventuras has expanded their program to children ages 3 and up and is continuously adding new classes. The mission of Aventuras is “to equip young children with an education for bilingualism through an enriching comprehensive preparatory program in a cooperative, encouraging, inspiring and adventurous learning environment.” By bringing up a bilingual or multilingual child, you are expanding their world with opportunities and access to resources, people, places and things, and encouraging an appreciation of culture and diversity. Give your child an adventure to last a lifetime—enroll in Aventuras today! Contact info@aventurasne. com or visit www.aventurasne.com for information or to register online.

Star City Nannies

S

ummer is almost over, which means it’s back-to-school time! For a lot of families, autumn = busy. Along with house chores, grocery shopping, work schedules, and maybe a glimmer of a social life for yourself, you now also have to juggle in school drop-off and pick-up, early dismissals, before and after school clubs, sports, lessons, weekend playdates, birthday parties, no-school days, and everything else that kind of piles up during the school year—it’s really exhausting just reading about it! To put it simply, a parent can always use an extra set of hands, and that’s where Star City Nannies can help. Whether you are looking for a part-time helping hand or full time super-nanny, Star City Nannies will help you stay on top of that ongoing list of do-do-do and go-go-go. For full-day care, our nannies are prepared with enriching activities to keep your little ones busy, learning, and having fun all day long. Nannies can help with errands, get children to and from activities, and can even join you on family excursions as an extra set of eyes at the pumpkin patch, state fair, or park. Hiring a nanny can allow you to focus on work and achieving your goals. And a nanny can definitely help you get in some self-care time so you can hit the gym, get a haircut, take a bath, or maybe start painting again or pick up a new hobby. Maybe you just had a baby or your children aren’t in school yet. Perhaps you are going back to work, working from home, picking up a side gig,

or feeling overwhelmed as a stay at home parent. We can help no matter the situation. You know that old saying: it takes a village? It applies to all children and all parents. Let Star City Nannies be a part of your village. Our nannies work with your schedule so that it’s freer and more manageable. Children thrive with consistency, routines, quality one-on-one time, and being around people they know and trust. You get all of that and more when you hire a nanny. So how do you go about finding your perfect nanny? It sounds like more work, right? Give Star City Nannies a call! We take the hard work out of finding the perfect nanny for your family. As Lincoln’s premier nanny agency, we pride ourselves for only working with the best nannies in the business. We only consider highly qualified nannies who are nineteen or older, have at least one year of professional childcare experience, are CPR and first aid certified, pass a thorough background check, and successfully complete an extensive

“Working with Jen and Star City Nannies made finding our summer nanny so much easier than I ever anticipated! This was our family’s first experience in seeking childcare outside of the traditional daycare environment, so I was anxious about the process. All my worries were put to rest during my first few messages back and forth with Jen. She is extremely professional, quick to respond, and a wealth of knowledge for all nanny-related questions (and I had many!). We couldn’t be happier with the lovely nanny Star City Nannies helped us hire, and we will absolutely be using this service again next summer!” — Alissa H.

Libraries Really Are More Than Books Vicki Wood, Lincoln City Libraries

I

n my 30-year career as a children’s librarian, I have heard dozens of authors speak about the evolution of their writing careers— how they knew they wanted to write books, when they found their voice, and who encouraged them along the way. Almost without exception, these writers were encouraged as children, or as teens, by a teacher or a librarian. Most found refuge and inspiration in books and the places that house them: libraries. Libraries are part of an important class of places called “third spaces,” where we go to be inspired, relax, be alone or in good company. Aside from public parks and trails, libraries are one of the few places left that don’t charge us for the pleasure of enjoying and using them. They are truly democratic institutions that welcome everyone, from the youngest child to octogenarians. There are special spaces in libraries for quiet study, co-working, group meetings, tutoring, and relaxing with

the newspaper or a magazine. Children and teens are accommodated with a zone that is just for them and their compatriots. Whether you are seeking specific information or just browsing for your next beach read, libraries welcome you with their well-curated collections which encompass much of the knowledge and imagination the human species has acquired and created. Libraries are especially important to children. It is here where they get their first taste of stories, the all-important way that humans understand the world. Children feel empowered when they get to choose their own books and follow their curiosity to explore and connect the dots of knowledge. Libraries lead children onto the rewarding path of life-long learning. There is a dazzling selection of

new books paying homage to the humble institution, the materials they house, and the magic they contain. The Book Hog by author/illustrator Greg Pizzoli features a pig that loves to collect books but has never learned to read. With patience and a little librarian encouragement, he crosses that momentous threshold from book appreciator to enthusiastic reader. The dynamic duo of Newbery Medalist Kwame Alexander and Caldecott Honoree Melissa Sweet have created an evocative love poem about reading and the joys it can bring in How to Read a Book. The

simple title belies the complex word play and captivating images contained inside. This book was built for sharing, so settle in and, as the book implores us to do, “Don’t rush through: Your eyes need time to taste. Your soul needs room to bloom.” For readers in the upperelementary age group, The Library of Ever by Zeno Alexander combines fantasy, time travel, and a spunky young girl, Lenora, who is hired as a “Fourth Assistant Apprentice Librarian.” Her foes are the bowlerhatted “Forces of Darkness” intent on control, censorship, and keeping the populace ignorant. Though there aren’t many legendary librarians, Pura Belpré has a book award named after her for books that celebrate the Latin American cultural experience. In Planting Stories: The Life of Librarian and Storyteller Pura Belpré, this beautifully illustrated picture book biography details the unique contributions of Belpré, a native Puerto Rican who made New York her home, and storytelling her life’s work.

By Lincoln City Libraries. A seasonal collection of children’s library books for all ages to enjoy and for families to read together.

H

i, my name is Sandy, and I’m a librarian at Gere Branch Library. I have the honor to kick off our new Lincoln Kids book recommendation column, “Books to Grow With,” a collection of handselected children’s books available at our libraries. For this edition, I wanted to focus on the upcoming season, autumn, and a variety of subjects that go along with it.

AUGUST

School starts and we start thinking about fall. What better way to kick off the season than with two titles about squirrels. I Can Run, a first reader by Murray Head, is filled with color photographs of squirrels being squirrels. It’s perfect for those who are learning to read, and the large photos and short text make it perfect for sharing with babies (it’s a favorite in our Baby Time at Gere).

For the picture book crowd, I suggest Squirrels Leap, Squirrels Sleep by April Pulley Sayre. Her text pairs perfectly with Steve Jenkins’ art to provide us a glimpse of a typical squirrel day.

Oregon since 1910. George Fletcher, an African-American bronc rider, competed in 1911 for a $350 saddle against two others: Jackson Sundown, a Nez Perce Native American, and John Spain, a white rancher. The book demonstrates how the audience was outraged after racism played a roll in naming Spain as champion. In the end, the goodwill of others was victorious as George received the recognition he deserved and was named “The People’s Champion.” There are several pages at the end with rodeo and western terms and information on the main characters.

OCTOBER

I have the perfect Halloween board book for the very young. It’s Pumpkin Day, Mouse! by Laura Numeroff and Felicia Bond stars the mouse from If You Give A Mouse A Cookie. Mouse has seven pumpkins to decorate, and he paints each one with a different face that conveys an emotion. This adorable book may inspire your family to decorate pumpkins or coloring sheets with faces depicting various feelings.

Subscription To Nature Lindsay Rogers, Nebraska Game & Parks Commission

W

hile searching the internet for things to do on our vacation, I was inundated with advertisements. Some were for an event in the area we were headed, but most were for products and services. And, as I started paying attention to them, I noticed a trend—subscriptions. Subscribe now for a monthly delivery of diapers. Subscribe to receive a quarterly toy kit perfectly matched to your child. Subscribe today for the monthly vitamin kit. Or, the weekly subscription for a meal prep kit. Don’t get me wrong, like 81% of Nebraska women, I am a working mom, so I completely understand the desire to subscribe to these services. These ads made me think of all the time I spend shopping for my family’s basic needs—groceries, clothing, household products, and what seems like a weekly list of birthday party gifts. In turn, this led to me ponder about what I would do with

I need to remember that, although the carpet needs vacuuming, I don’t have time for that right now because the night sky is clear and the stars are waiting for us. We do not need a subscription for a toy kit. Nature has plenty to keep us entertained. From looking for things that start with every letter of the alphabet to searching for symmetry in nature. Plus, there’s always hiking, fishing, kayaking, and just good old fashioned exploring. I do not need a subscription for a vitamin kit. Nature provides me with plenty of vitamins. Daily exposure to the sun provides my body with vitamin D. Spending time in nature also provides a boost to my immune system and energy levels. And spending time outside means I am more likely to exercise and get better sleep. In the end, these annoying internet ads were just what I needed. They reminded me of the “product” that I really want—and need—in my family’s busy life. Nature is waiting, go outside.

A Perfectly Imperfect Gardener/Habitat Maker Andrea Faas, Pioneers Park Nature Center

I

am not a perfect gardener. I’m a little sloppy, a little lazy, and slightly obsessed with plant sales (emphasis on sale!). My gardening skills are just okay, but sometimes being lazy about it has improved my ability to be a habitat maker. What does it take to make a habitat? Living things need water, food, shelter, and space. If you have outdoor space, you can create a habitat, too!

Water Start with water in a birdbath, saucer, or possibly a water fountain. Fresh water will attract all kinds of wildlife like insects, birds, small mammals—maybe even a fox! Keep the water clean and switch it out periodically to get rid of mosquito larva. I keep a couple of birdbaths in my yard and also have saucers on my porch, which I fill every couple of days. The squirrels love the water, especially in the winter.

PAGE 26 • LINCOLNKIDSINC.COM

piles. In the fall, I rake most of the leaves to put in my compost pile, but I leave a lot on my flower beds to provide cover for insects and insulate plants that might not survive a harsh winter. Another benefit of leaf mulch is that it breaks down in soil, which will feed my garden. In the spring, I clean out the beds slowly and wait until the last frost to remove the rest of the leaves.

Food My yard is full of food— quite literally if you check the compost pile! My yard boasts raspberries, berry bushes, bird feeders, and flowering plants. I like to have perennials, plants that come back year after year. Perennials that are native to our region or local area will survive better and tolerate the extreme weather patterns. Fall is an excellent time of year to plant perennials, since the heat of the summer has passed. Perennials are often on sale at the end of the season, and may not always look great since they can be root bound (when the roots have grown around and around inside the container). Before you plant them, water the plant well the day before. When planting, loosen

Space

and break apart the roots so that they will spread out in the soil. Mark where you planted your plant, then you know where to look for it in the spring!

Shelter This is where being a little lazy is a good thing! Don’t do a great job cleaning up your garden. We all need shelter, and many types of wildlife will shelter in piles of leaves, dead sticks, plant stems, and compost

Finally, habitats need space. If you, your neighbors, and our parks work together to create habitat spaces around town, we will have lots of wildlife! Butterflies, bees, birds, squirrels, rabbits, and foxes all benefit from our efforts to provide a variety of spaces where they can find the water, food, and shelter they need to survive! We look forward to seeing you this fall at Pioneers Park! Join us for Wild Wagon Weekends Sep. 22 & 29, info on p.27! TOP! Don’t cut down that shrub. A dried-up plant may not make your yard look so pretty, but it does a whole lot of good for wildlife—especially birds. Winter will soon be upon us, and by leaving those non-flowering shrubs and planting native fall plants in your yard, you will provide shelters and food sources for birds. It will help them survive the frigid winter weather, as well as provide migrating birds with their basic needs to help them make it through their long migration route. Native plants are important to our birds and bugs as food sources, shelter and habitat, and as nurseries for nests. Hello, Pumpkin Season! Close

to

Home

By Gretchen Garrison: Mother, Teacher, Blogger, Author, Nebraska Enthusiast. www.OdysseyThroughNebraska.com

B

ecause my birthday is in October, the pumpkin has become a symbol of both fall and happiness for me. This large overgrown squash is not only good for making delicious desserts, but also savory soups and pasta sauces (Meal Makeover Mom’s pumpkin pasta recipe is the best!). Before cooking, do you consider pumpkin a fruit or vegetable? Technically it is a fruit, yet more people consider it a veggie. Some say its classification depends on what we’re doing with it! Whether you like your pumpkins sweet, savory, or carved, they are sure to play a part in your fall festivities.

Pumpkin Books + Activities Pumpkin Soup by Helen Cooper is considered one of Lincoln City Library’s Top 100 Picture Books. It’s the tale of animal friends who cook

this special soup together. You can cook the soup, too, since the book includes the recipe in the back. It’s Pumpkin Time by Zoe Hall may seem simple, but this story appeals to all ages. Learning to watch the changing of seasons is great for kids, and the illustrations may inspire your children to create colorful fall pictures. How Big Could Your P u m p k i n Grow? by Wendell Minor is entertaining, has beautiful illustrations, and creates the opportunity to talk to your child about size and dimension. When you bring pumpkins home this fall, grab a vari-

ety of sizes and let your children guess their weight, then weigh them together to compare. How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin? by Judith McNamara is a great title to introduce sorting and skip-counting. After you’ve counted your seeds, save them for roasting! Rinse and clean your seeds, toss them in butter or oil and sprinkle with salt, then bake at 300 for about 45 minutes, stirring occasionally. Enjoy your healthy snack!

Pumpkin Patches Pumpkin patches provide the perfect backdrop for fall family fun, traditions, and memories. Depending on the experience that you are looking for, there is probably a location that fits both your budget and your activity level. These are some of the pumpkin patches within an hour of Lincoln:

Avoca: Bloom Where You’re Planted Bloompumpkinpatch.com Beatrice: Korner Pumpkin Patch Find them on Facebook Bellevue: Bellevue Berry Farm & Pumpkin Ranch Bellevueberryfarm.com Ceresco: Martin’s Hillside Orchard Hillside-orchard.com Gretna: Vala’s Pumpkin Patch Valaspumpkinpatch.com Lincoln: JK’s Pumpkin Patch Jkspumpkinpatch.com Roca: Roca Berry Farm Rocaberryfarm.com To learn about more pumpkin patches found across the state, please search Gretchen’s blog, Odyssey Through Nebraska. Thanks to ravenous neighborhood black squirrels, Gretchen Garrison’s children are often deprived of the pumpkin carving experience. Hopefully her abundance of pumpkin decor takes a bit of that sting away, and their pumpkin patch experiences will continue to be an annual tradition. Gretchen is busy writing two more books that will be released in 2020, so her kids may have to be content with canned and stuffed pumpkins this fall. Check out her first book, Detour Nebraska: Historical Destination & Natural Wonders.

Celebrating 35 years of memories & traditions! Visit Vala’s Pumpkin Patch & Apple Orchard this fall! Located between Lincoln & Omaha, exit 439 off I-80. Vala’s is fun for all ages! Pumpkins vs. Squirrels : Who Will Win This Halloween? Karla Goerl, Lincoln Kids! Newspaper, with expert advice from wikiHow,

e have a pumpkin problem at our house. As soon as our pumpkins hit the porch, it’s us versus the squirrels. Now, I love squirrels. They are super adorable and one of my favorite critters, but our neighborhood squirrels can be quite vicious. They once took revenge and chewed through my fuel line when we stopped refilling our bird feeder—ahem, I mean squirrel feeder. That same week they totaled our neighbor’s car for doing the same thing. Ever since then, we’ve called our neighborhood pack of squirrels the Squirrel Mafia. The Mafia doesn’t mess around with Halloween. They make quick work of pumpkins. It starts with a couple nibbles in the morning, and by noon the pumpkins are completely gutted and our stoop is a mess. Last year they were especially ruthless—we were lucky to get one full day with our pumpkins before the feast began. While scroll-

ing Facebook last autumn, I noticed nearly a dozen friends posting about this very battle, so this year, we are going to make several attempts to deter the Squirrel Mafia.

Plan A: Petroleum Jelly I hope this one works. It will be the simplest, most attractive, and least-irritating fix—plus, we have a ton of Vaseline left over from the diaper days. We will pretty much coat our pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns in a thick layer of Vaseline. WikiHow states using a vapor rub makes for an added repellent, as squirrels do not like eucalyptus or menthol. It is possible that this method will last the entire season, too, with just one or two applications.

Plan B: Dog Hair For obvious reasons, squirrels do not like dogs, so the theory is that if we place our pumpkins on a bed of dog hair, the squirrels will smell the dog and stay away. For aesthetic reasons, I’m not super thrilled about this method, but if we give this a try, I am

hoping I can work the dog hair into a pile of straw or hay without it losing effectiveness. The dog hair would also have a positive impact for wintering birds, as it’s a great material for building & furnishing their nests.

Last Resort: Repellent After the fuel line incident, we used a product called Critter Ridder on the underside of my car. It is highly effective, and I am certain this will keep the squirrels from nibbling our pumpkins, but it will be our last resort. It’s basically pepper spray in a squirt bottle. With kids in the house, I would rather not have it

N

around. I would not want to apply it to any pumpkins that children or pets can get to. Plus it requires wearing safety glasses & gloves, and it’d need reapplied every few days or with rain. For pumpkins, wikiHow suggests looking for a squirrel (or deer) repellent that has high amounts of putrescent whole egg solids—aka, rotten eggs (sorry, neighbors!). I really hope the Vaseline works. I plan to post updates on our battle versus the Squirrel Mafia on Facebook. If you want to follow along, head over to our page, Lincoln Kids Newspaper, and give us a like! Your follow is a huge support and it means a lot to us!

Halloween Safety Tips For Pet Owners Capital Humane Society

E

ach year, hundreds of local children visit the Pieloch Pet Adoption Center as part of a field trip with their school or childcare center. During their visit, Capital Humane Society’s humane education program teaches them about responsible pet care, the role of the humane society, and the importance of being kind. Many of the visiting children care about animals and want to know how they can aid our mission. One of the best ways is to be a responsible pet owner and take excellent care of the pets they already have at home. One example of being a responsible pet owner is to remember to be safe on holidays and special occasions, like Halloween, which is right around the corner. Here are some useful tips for pet owners during Halloween: •• Candy, especially chocolate, needs to be kept out of your pet’s reach. It can make them very sick or may

even be toxic. Keep your Halloween candy in a place where your pet will not be able to access it. •• Candles and cords used in decorating can cause problems. For example, pets may chew on wires or knock over lit candles. Use these items with caution and try to keep them out of your pet’s reach. •• If you plan to dress up your pet, make sure the costume fits and doesn’t impede your pet’s ability to move comfortably. They still need to be able to hear, see, breathe, and communicate normally. Do

Free games & trick-or-treating in a safe environment.

not force your pet to wear a costume if they exhibit stress or behaviors that make it clear they are uncomfortable while wearing it. •• Be sure your pets are wearing their identification tags in the event that they slip out the door or gate. Consider microchipping as it will significantly increase the odds of your pets being reunited with your family should they get lost. •• Have a plan for safely confining your pet when opening doors for visitors. You don’t want to risk the pet slipping out and becoming lost. Some dogs are quite protective and

do not like it when trick-or-treaters come to the door. Securing pets in a room until the door bell stops ringing will help keep everyone safe. Thank you for being responsible pet owners. With proper planning & education, you can prevent big problems for your pets. It is inspiring to know that so many young people are interested in our work at Capital Humane Society, and want to have a positive impact on the lives of pets. Their decision to be responsible and kind helps make this a better world for people, pets and other animals in our community. Please visit our website for helpful handouts and information on adoption, events, donating, volunteering, and fostering. New App Makes It Easier To Raise Funds For Your School Box Tops for Education

G

earing up for back-toschool season is no longer just about new backpacks, teacher assignments, and school supply lists. For schools, summer is also a reminder that they have their work cut out for them in trying to secure additional funding to provide students with the best possible education. While schools have many ways to fundraise and advocate for expanded federal, state and local budgets, parents can turn to innovative programs like Box Tops for Education to raise money for things like classroom supplies, technology, field trips, and playground equipment. In fact, since its inception in 1996, when only a select few General Mills cereals were part of the test launch, Box Tops for Education has raised more than $913 million for over 70,000 schools just by paying 10 cents for every Box Tops clip, which has grown to a long list of participating food and household products.

Even Better, The New App Has Simplified The Entire Process. No longer do parents, teachers and other community members have to cut out and then physically drop off dozens, or even hundreds, of Box Tops clips at their local school. Instead, they’re now able to use the Box Tops for Education app, downloadable for free via iTunes App Store and Google Play, to scan their receipts from any retailer right on their smartphones.

The new Box Tops for Education app makes it easier than ever to earn money for your school!

The app automatically recognizes participating products, and funds are instantly added to your chosen school’s earnings online. Then, twice each year, schools receive a check from Box Tops for Education to buy whatever they need. “When Box Tops for Education began 23 years ago, clipping and mailing Box Tops was the best way for us to run the program,” said Erin Anderson, Box Tops for Education’s platform manager. “But over the years, technology has advanced at incredible rates, opening up all kinds of new opportunities. By going digital, we will be able to create efficiencies in our fulfillment processes, better understand the health of the program, show supporters their contributions in real-time, and attract more brands to participate.”

Convenience aside, shoppers using the app have two big advantages: •• The ability to see for themselves, right on the app, how their shop-

ping habits directly impact their schools. •• A chance to win one of five $20,000 makeovers for their school by scanning receipts containing at least one participating product between now and November 15, 2019. Receipts must be scanned within 14 days of purchase, and as the program fully transitions to a digital format, traditional Box Tops clips found on packaging will still be accepted until they expire. And, yes, “double-dipping” is allowed. Meaning, for a limited time only during the packaging transition, savvy shoppers can earn double the cash by submitting traditional Box Top clips to your school’s coordinator and also scanning receipts containing participating items through the app. Those without smartphones are encouraged to give their receipts to a friend, neighbor, or family member to scan on their behalf. For more information, or to see a full list of participating products, visit www.BoxTops4Education.com.

A Note from Lincoln Kids! Karla Goerl, Publisher

B

ox Tops for Education is an awesome, simple program. It’s literally school funds just sitting there on stuff I regularly buy, and all I have to do is turn them in. Think about it, if you buy just one box of participating cereal every week, in one year that ads up to $5.20. Doesn’t seem like much, but if every cereal-eating kid turned them in, the numbers are eye-opening. The average elementary class has 26 kids, and if they all turned

in one cereal Box Top each week for a year, that’s over $135 in class funds from one product that we’re already buying, that often just gets tossed in the trash. Now, do that with all the BTFE-participating products that we purchase regularly (I probably collect an average of two per week), and multiply that by each grade level, and you can quickly see how these $0.10 funds have the potential to become thousands of dollars annually—but we all have to participate. Please don’t throw away school funds. Grab your phone and download the app. If you don’t think you’ll remember to scan in your receipts, set up reminders, like a weekly alarm on your phone, or hang this article on your fridge or inside your cupboards so you see it when you put away groceries. Start the habit now and watch the dimes add up! I’ve been turning in Box Tops to the neighborhood school since before I even had a kid—it’s easypeasy fundraising and our schools can use it! The new BTFE app is very streamlined and super user-friendly. I downloaded it, set up my school, and submitted my first receipt within 10 minutes of coming home from the store. The best part? The app processed my photo for maybe 30 seconds, and then instantly showed me what I earned for the school. It’s pretty slick! I usually save up clips for six months or so before turning them in, and, unfortunately, some clips expire before that happens. I also catch my husband tossing a box into the recycle bin without clipping the Box Top, so I often dig through our recycling, searching for the BTFE emblem. I’m excited the program is going digital—it’ll get more people and products to participate. I’m always happy to find Box Tops on new packages. I especially love buying bulk items like General Mills cereal, Finish dishwasher tabs, Ziploc bags, and Hefty trash liners from Sam’s Club or Costco, where the bulk-size package often has bonus Box Tops, too. For your kid’s school supplies, Box Tops can now be found on Paper Mate pens, pencils, and erasers, as well as Kleenex multi-packs. Do your schools a favor and don’t pitch the potential funds! Together we can make a huge impact for our schools, and more importantly, our children. Please download the new BTFE app today! FALL 2019 • PAGE 33

Audiobooks Support Reading Skill Development Written by Deanna Dreher, mother of a dyslexic student, on behalf of the Nebraska Dyslexia Association (NDA)

A

udiobooks increase word exposure, vocabulary, and build background knowledge, all of which are critical learning skills. Audiobooks allow children to read books of interest, making them more likely to continue to engage in reading for pleasure. Research has shown that many successful adults with dyslexia learned to read by pursuing topics of interest. Audiobooks have given my children a sense of independence over their learning and reading. The National Library Service (NLS) offers a program called the Talking Book program for the blind and disabled. A brief application affirming your reading disability must be signed by a licensed professional (criteria vary by state, but in Nebraska it must be an MD or DO). Program members receive a very durable talking book machine that reads cartridges that are sent and returned by

mail—all for free, no return postage collected. You can order from a large selection of books over the phone or online, which are often read by volunteers. LOC.gov/nls. BARD is the app version for the NLS program. Rather than getting audiobook cartridges and a machine, BARD is a downloadable app for internet devices (Kindle, phone, tablet, computer, etc.). It’s similar to Libby, Overdrive, and Hoopla, except that there are no limits on how many books you can have checked out, and there are no waiting periods. The books come from the NLS library and are not usually professionally produced. Access is automatic once your NLS application is approved. BARD is available for free download via smart devices and accessible at nlsbard.loc.gov. Bookshare is an ebook library for people with dyslexia, disabilities, and visual impairments. Access is free for qualifying US students and $50/year for qualifying non-students. It uses mostly text-to-speech rather than human recordings. Users can

read along as it highlights the words, and can customize their experience by choosing their preferred voice and adjusting the reading speed, text size, color, and contrast. Bookshare can be used on phones, tablets, computers, and other devices, and uses much less storage. Since it uses TTS primarily and doesn’t rely on human readers, the selection is virtually unlimited. Bookshare.org. Learning Ally has a large library of human-read educational and textbooks, as well as popular fiction and nonfiction titles for readers of all levels. There are youth, college, and adult memberships. Documentation is required, and an annual membership currently costs $135/year. Financial assistance may be available for those who qualify. Learningally.org. Lincoln City Libraries provides free audiobooks and ebooks through Libby, Overdrive, Hoopla, & TumbleBook. Overdrive is the library’s online digital library, and Libby is the downloadable app created by Overdrive. Hoopla is another library platform that offers streaming movies & shows, digital books, comics, and more across smart devices, including TVs. TumbleBooks are animated, talking picture books. These services are free for anyone with a library card (which is also

free) and offer a great variety. They do not have ads or commercials, but some items & popular titles may have a waitlist. Consider the benefits of a screen reader on your computer or other devices. For compositions, my family loves the voice typing feature in Google Docs. My kids will compose entire essays using voice typing and then go back and edit later. It’s wonderful for encouraging creativity and writing, even when the actual writing and spelling is beyond their current abilities. Multilingual houses can use Google’s voice typing, too, because it supports a wide variety of languages. For more information on dyslexia and related reading, writing and spelling difficulties or accommodations, contact the Nebraska Dyslexia Association: www.ne-da.org or 402.434.6434. Plan to attend the annual Nebraska Dyslexia Association Fall Celebration, October 19, 9-11 am, at Gretna High School, to hear individual journeys with dyslexia and recognize outstanding achievement. Finding The Link Between Art And Nature At Everett Art Academy

By Tamara Kaye Creative Director and Founder

ometimes the best things are the quiet things. The hidden things. The overlooked things. But once you find them, spend time with them, and really get to know them, they will teach you more than you can imagine. This is what the Summer Everett Art Academy is all about. PAGE 44 • LINCOLNKIDSINC.COM

The ArtReach Project has always had summer programming available to the public until this year when a quiet thing happened and an opportunity opened up. Together with artists David Manzanares and Rikki Neumann, and with the help of Carolyn Butler from the Nebraska Wildlife Federation, the Everett Art Academy was created under the supervision of Everett CLC Director Charity Iroumanya. This eight week series of free summer art camps was developed exclusively for the students at Everett Elementary School. Each week, we explored the connections

between art, nature, and our community. We discussed concepts such as resilience, heritage, diversity, families, and cooperation while studying plants that are native to Nebraska. While discussing roots, we explored family trees and the roots we have within our own families. We learned that the ironweed is the first plant to emerge after a fire and as such, we can learn about resilience and how to overcome obstacles in our own lives. We discussed the migration of plants and animals and how so many of us have moved not only between neighborhoods and cities, but

between states and countries as well. We drew, painted, sculpted, wove, planted, and played with all sorts of natural things, all within the walls of Everett Elementary School. It happened quietly, and it’s one of the best things that I’ve ever done. You can find some of the artwork the students created in the LK Art Gallery, and when you come upon it, you will know a little bit about it. Enjoy!

Please stay in touch & see what’s new. Follow The ArtReach Project on FB & IG.
