I
once stumbled upon an article about Japanese words that lacked equivocal English counterparts. What prompted the author to publish this list was the fact that these words carry deep, beautiful meanings, and he longed for similar words in English, not just explanations. One of these words, fuubutsushi, which represents feelings, scents, and scenery that evoke memories of a season, is particularly befitting of this time of year. Winter is heavy with tradition and nostalgia. During my milk pumping days, Gilmore Girls was launched on Netflix (score!) and I very much looked forward to my nightly episode while washing pump and bottle parts. I was always intrigued by Lorelai’s love of winter (I’m not too keen on cold weather), and was curious how she could always sense that the first snow was about to happen. Those feelings, the smell—it’s her fuubutsushi for winter, and it brought about pure joy that was oddly catching. For me, the smell of crunchy leaves and feeling the last bit of summer in the sun coupled with a wintery breeze makes me excited for late fall, particularly Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, the past few years have made me worried for this holiday. Every year, Black Friday aggressively consumes more and more of

Thanksgiving, when, ironically, the holiday is there for us to give thanks for what we already have. Some stores even open before the traditional Thanksgiving meal hits the table. Although I feel this is wrong and wish Black Friday would go back to being Friday and leave TG alone, I can source serenity to experience the holiday that I desire, and relish in my fuubutsushi with gratitude. Besides, Black Friday shopping is a beloved tradition for many (just not me) and I wouldn’t want to take away from anyone’s fuubutsushi. In case your are wondering, fuubutsushi is pretty much phonetic in its spelling, pronounced fhoo-buh-tsoo-shee. Although to me it is not the most elegant sounding word, I absolutely adore its meaning. Memories are incredibly powerful, and putting a name to the senses that draw upon memories of a particular season is marvelous. We all experience it, perhaps even at this very moment. It’s what puts the joy in winter.

Community Impact By Leah Kolar, Theatre Arts for Kids
T
heatre Arts For Kids (TAFK) is committed to embracing our community and making a difference within it. Philanthropy plays a big role in TAFK’s music theatre programs, leaving lasting impressions on both the students and our community. On stage, students learn acting, stage combat, music, singing, directing, and stage production; in society, they develop lifelong skills, self-esteem, and humanitarianism through community outreach. Providing scholarships for families who would otherwise not be able to participate in our programs is just a small piece of TAFK efforts. We proudly welcome all children to TAFK! We are thrilled to offer opportunities in our shows and classes for children of all ability levels and welcome children with disabilities of all kinds. TAFK students make this possible through our mentorship program, where a TAFK student is Not just anyBUDDY. Young children and students with disabilities are paired with veteran TAFK performers for mentoring, support, and success. Each year, the TAFK family takes on at least one project to make a difference for others; we have adopted families for gift-giving, raised funds for Bryan Health NICU equipment, and brought the performing arts to Lincoln City Libraries. Our most recent project was an animal adoption fundraiser for the Lincoln
K K
Children’s Zoo. Our current philanthropy is raising funds and gathering items for CEDARS Foster Care program. These projects make an impact on TAFK kids. It is our mission that our students will have gratitude for these opportunities and take pride and ownership of the differences they are making in their community, and that this goodwill will continue throughout their lives. TAFK also offers private singing lessons with continued community outreach through The Voice Studio. Students of The Voice Studio visit and perform at several assisted living and rehabilitation centers throughout each school year, spending time afterwards getting to know the residents. The Voice Studio also performs for local Kiwanis and Rotary clubs, and other community organizations, such as the Lincoln Children’s Museum. This past summer, we proudly launched our Community Impact outreach program. We took our “show” on the road, bringing TAFK performances and education to Clinton and Hartley Community Centers, Educare, and Bryan Health Child Development Center. Next summer the program will be working with hearing-impaired students through Lincoln Public Schools. We are always open to opportunities to make a difference in Lincoln. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram to see what we are up to. If you have an idea for us or are interested in our theatre programs, please contact us at info@tafk.org.

Why You Should “Dad Up And Read” By Lincoln City Libraries in partnership with Read Aloud Lincoln
L
incoln City Libraries and Read Aloud Lincoln have been working hard to spread the word about the importance of reading aloud, every child, every day, 15 minutes a day. Increasingly, research shows that this simple practice can make a huge difference in a child’s life in terms of learning to read, academic achievement, and confidence in school. Many parents know that reading aloud is something they should do daily. A new survey conducted by YouGov for the non-profit Read Aloud 15 MINUTES finds that only 42% of parents read aloud to their children every day, and only 30% do so for at least 15 minutes. How does one bridge the gap between knowing and doing? Like a lot of the work of raising children, parents can divide and conquer. That means that if mom is usually the bedtime storyteller, dad can take on the Saturday trip to the library. If dad reads at bedtime, maybe mom can read aloud while the young ones load the dishwasher. Are there a few books in both parent’s cars or in the diaper bag, so either mom or dad can get in a few minutes of reading during soccer practice or while waiting at the doctor’s office? But why is it important for dads, and other men in a child’s life, to read aloud to them and model the importance of reading? Worldwide research into the role fathers play in the development of their children has found important ways that involved fathers make a positive impact on their child’s life. •• Boys and girls whose dads are involved in their education are more prepared for school and do better academically than their peers. •• A father’s verbal interactions with his child at an early age are strongly related to the development of the child’s language skills. •• Children with involved fathers are less prone to depression, less likely to get into trouble, and have a more positive self-image. Page 8 • LincolnKidsInc.com
Perhaps just as importantly, over the past forty years we’ve witnessed a marked increase in girls’ academic achievement; unfortunately, there’s also been a documented decrease in boys’ academic achievement. There are several theories about why this is happening, but perhaps the most compelling is the assertion that school—reading especially—is being seen increasingly by young boys as a “feminine” activity. How do we overcome this? Here are a few ideas to get you started: Library Time: Make this a special dad or grandpa time, or alternate with making it a family outing. Decide on a number of books to check out and take turns making selections to take home. It’s Not All About Fiction: Some kids and parents prefer books about the real world. Explore history, the planets, sports, or biographies together by choosing a nonfiction book written for youth. Keep It Fun: Read aloud guru Jim Trelease reminds us that human beings are pleasure-centered and that reading is an accrued skill. Make your time together count by letting loose and having fun while reading aloud. Start Early and Don’t Stop Too Soon: Start reading at birth, and don’t stop once your child can read on their own. Newly independent readers need motivation to keep going, and reading books just above their reading level increases their fluency, vocabulary, and motivation. Make Yours a “Print Rich” Home: Make sure there is plenty of reading material, including newspapers, magazines, books, and yes, even word games like crossword puzzles. Let your children see you reading. Share conversations about what they are reading at school. Attend Events: Have fun at the daddy-and-me events occurring at several libraries this fall: “Dads Do” on November 3, and “Breakfast with Dad” on November 10. Check out the links to our dadfriendly reading ideas on our web page, www.lincolnlibraries.org, and follow Lincoln City Libraries and Read Aloud Lincoln on Facebook for more events & inspiration.

Nutcracker Ballet Taking The Stage Early This Year Submitted by Lincoln Company (LMBC)
Midwest
Ballet
F
or 34 holiday seasons, the Lincoln Midwest Ballet Company (LMBC) has captivated Lincoln audiences with its production of The Nutcracker. This year the show is earlier than ever—a perfect kick-off to the holiday season! Traditionally, the ballet is performed the second weekend in December, but due to Lied Center scheduling, LMBC was asked to move the show to December 7th and 8th. The new show times may surprise families who attend The Nutcracker as a yearly tradition. This year, dancers will take the stage on Friday, December 7th, at 7:00 pm, and Saturday, December 8th, at 11:00 am and 4:00 pm. Even without a Sunday matinee, which is historically the best-attended show, we hope to set record attendance this year. Although the 2018 performance dates and times have changed, the quality of the production remains the same. Artistic Director Shari True promises that this year’s performance
will be as magical as ever. The show includes professional dancers from around the world, 188 local dancers, exquisite costumes, magnificent scenery, and a live score. LMBC is the only youth company in the Midwest that performs The Nutcracker accompanied by a live orchestra, with the collaboration between LMBC and The Nebraska Symphony Chamber Orchestra continuing this year. Fortyfive talented musicians will play the classic Tchaikovsky score under the
direction of Dr. Herbert E. Dregalla, Jr. Guest artists Miki Kawamura and Alvin Tovstogray will dance the roles of Sugar Plum Fairy and Cavalier. Ms. Kawamura began her training at the age of ten in Japan, and Tovstogray received his training in Ukraine. Featured student soloists include: Leah Andersen, a junior at Lincoln East High School, as Clara; Emily Yost, a senior at Pius X High School, as Snow Queen; Emma Luci, a junior at Lincoln East High School,
as Arabian Queen; and Kayla French, a senior at Millard West High School, as Dew Drop. While performers and show times change from year to year, the story remains timeless. The Nutcracker debuted to the world 126 years ago and since then has become such a treasured holiday tradition that it recently inspired a new Disney movie, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. LMBC hopes that the movie will spark a renewed interest in experiencing The Nutcracker as it was originally intended—with live symphonic music, classical dance style, lush sets, and ornate costumes suggestive of romantic yesteryears. Audience members attending this year’s LMBC production will experience a fantastic display of performing arts and special effects, including a magical spinning bed, snowflakes falling through shimmering light, and Clara and her Nutcracker Prince flying through the air in a sleigh. Join us this year at the Lied Center for Performing Arts on December 7 and 8 to experience an unforgettable, magical performance.

Lincoln’s Symphony Orchestra: Deck The Halls! Submitted by Lincoln’s Symphony Orchestra
L
incoln’s Symphony Orchestra invites you to get into the holiday spirit with their annual holiday concert, Deck the Halls, on Saturday, December 1, 2:00 pm and 6:00 pm, at the Lied Center for Performing Arts. Led by Resident Conductor Dr. Tyler G. White, concert-goers will be treated to a wide variety of seasonal favorites, including selections from The Nutcracker, Leroy Anderson’s Sleigh Ride, and a holiday singalong emceed by Jack Mitchell, LNK Today co-host on 1400 KLIN. “Whether you pine for popular tunes or the old standards, this program will showcase all of your holiday favorites,” said Executive Director Barbara Zach. “We are especially thrilled for our community collaborators this year. We know the audience will love what each group will bring to this holiday celebration!” Bell-issimo, a Lincoln-based, audition-only handbell choir, will add its sparkle to open the program. “Playing with the symphony is
Page 10 • LincolnKidsInc.com
just a wonderful thrill for all of us— and to represent handbell choirs, as well!” said Bell-issimo Director Nancy Youngman. “Christmas music especially is all about bells, so this is a beautiful way to come together and celebrate the holiday season.” Three separate dance studios, Dancing Beyond Limits (DBL), Chase Dance, and Tap This! Cloggers, will join the symphony on some selections. “Dancing Beyond Limits loves to engage the community through performance and empower them to embrace the abilities of those with mobility challenges,” said DBL Director Suzanne Dougherty. “The opportunity to perform with professional artists and live music—all while breaking down the barriers surrounding ‘disabilities’—is the highest honor for our dancers and volunteers!” Over one hundred students from Lincoln Suzuki Studios will make an appearance, performing familiar holiday tunes. Cellist Derek Hwang, this year’s Young Artist Competition winner,
will join the orchestra in a performance of P.I. Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme. Hwang won the chance to perform with the symphony after a competitive audition in September. Santa Claus will make an appearance during both performances and will be available for free pictures, courtesy of JamesAnn Photography, in the Ticketholder’s Lobby before the shows and during intermission. In an effort to make all LSO concerts financially accessible, tickets are available for only $15 or $35 each for adults, inclusive of all ticketing and facility fees. Youth tickets for ages 17 and under are available at $5 each, made possible by the Lienemann Charitable Foundation. Tickets are available online at www. lincolnsymphony.com, by phone at (402) 476‑2211, or at Lincoln’s Symphony Orchestra’s box office, 233 South 13th Street, suite 1702. he Lincoln Music Teachers Association Music Outreach Program (LMTA-MOP) provides an opportunity for low income or “at-risk” school-aged children to receive music instruction at reduced rates. LMTA-MOP is now accepting applications for students who are interested in music study and would otherwise not have the opportunity to take music lessons. Nominations may be made by any adult familiar with a child’s talent, interest, and financial need. MOP students may also receive free sheet music, instruments, tuning, and repairs, participate in all LMTA activities, and perform in the community. The program currently serves 50 students who study a variety of instruments from qualified teachers. The program is supported in part by grants, LMTA fundraisers, private donations, and community partnerships with businesses and piano technicians. Music for UnderServed Interested Children (M.U.S.I.C.) is an endowment held at the Lincoln Community Foundation (LCF) to supplement LMTA-MOP. From now through 2019, donations to M.U.S.I.C. will be matched 10% by the LCF. Donations can be made online at www.LMTA.info (Music Outreach Program or MUSIC Endowment
pages), or by mailing a check, payable to The Lincoln Community Foundation with “LMTA MUSIC Endowment” in the memo line, to the foundation at 215 Centennial Mall South #100, Lincoln, NE 68508. LMTA continually searches for teachers of all disciplines as well as business partners. If you wish to become a Music Outreach teacher, business partner, or volunteer, nominate a student, make a donation, or request further information, please visit www.LMTA.info or contact MOP@LMTA.info. LMTA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization of approximately 70 members which offers networking and continuing education for members, as well as activities and performing opportunities for members and their students. Why The Museum Is The Place To Be For The Holidays! Submitted by Lincoln Children’s Museum
L
incoln Children’s Museum has been part of the Lincoln community for 30 years, and after all that time, the Museum has certainly become part of some family traditions. From grandmothers taking their grandchildren to the same place they brought their own children, to parents playing on the exhibits they loved as kids, the Museum is home to lots of nostalgia, especially during the holidays. Throughout D e c e m b e r, Lincoln Children’s Museum hosts one holiday tradition after another. From ushering in Santa and all manner of holiday joy during Holiday Spectacular on the first Friday of the month, to Candyhouse Fun Shop taking place all month long, and ending with Make Believe Midnight on New Year’s Eve, the Museum has all the holiday fun you can want.
Candyhouse Fun Shop is an activity held every weekend in December that really brings families together. “We see families coming back year after year to do Candyhouse,” said Lindsay Bartlett, Director of Community and Learning at the Museum. “They compete against each other to make the best house, or all work together to make it look awesome. Either way, it’s just not Christmas until they build their Candyhouse.” A chance to build your own candyhouse without having to buy the candy or deal with the mess sounds like a great tradition to me! New this year, Make Believe Midnight will have two separate times to accom-
modate even more families with the city’s only family-friendly New Year’s Eve party. The first event of the day will start at 2:00 pm with the big balloon drop and countdown at 4:00 pm, and the second event will begin at the usual 6:00 pm with the balloon drop at 8:00 pm. “We wanted to think about those families with little ones who need to get to bed before eight, but still want to join in the fun of New Years together,” said Tara Knuth, Executive Director. “We have so much fun counting down to the new year—we figured it’d be even more fun to do it twice in one day!” And beyond all these events and activities, the Museum has daily camps during the winter break so that kids ages 4–12 still have a place to learn and play while they’re out of school. These fun themed camps involve handson and interactive elements that
engage children and get them excited about learning in an informal environment. Camps are held around Thanksgiving and Christmas and can be purchased by the day. Meanwhile, the Museum is open for visitors to play throughout the season; it’s the perfect place to bring those relatives who come into town and don’t want to sit around the house. The Museum will only be closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, so be sure to stop by and check things out while the kids are out of school! Visit www. LincolnChildrensMuseum.org for more details on all these events, general information, and daily hours.

Spring Festival: The Other New Year By Chris Heselton, Confucius Institute
T
he holiday season is upon us and before we know it the new year will be here. But did you know that not everyone in the world celebrates the new year on January first? Those who follow the lunar calendar—many Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese people in China and East Asia—will ring in the Lunar New Year on February 5th. The Lunar New Year is known as the Spring Festival, or chunjie (chwuhn-jyeh) in Chinese, because it marks the beginning of the turn towards spring. Spring Festival is like Christmas and New Year combined into one. The most important thing about the holiday is to be with family and friends on New Year’s Eve. Families spend days preparing staggering quantities of sumptuous dishes for a homecooked feast, including traditional dishes like dumplings and whole cooked fish. During the evening’s festivities, family members crowd in the living room and chat or play Mahjong, often with the television on in the background tuned into the annual Spring Festival Gala. From time to time, friends and neighbors stop by to bai nian—bring New Year tidings. At the stroke of midnight, Chinese cities often erupt into a cacophony of fireworks to ward off evil spirits, misfortune, and bad luck in the New Year. At some point in the evening, the children break from their activities to wish adult family and friends guo nian hao—pass the [new] year well— followed by a personalized wish for them. Adults are then obliged to hand over a red envelope containing money in return for their well
wishes, and kids quickly learn to approach any remote acquaintance of the family with new year tidings. Nowadays, people even send digital red envelopes on their mobile devices. Grandparents might receive “Good Health! May you live as long as the eastern peak.” Children may wish blessings of a baby to a newly married uncle, or good luck in finding a job with a good salary for a recently graduated aunt. It’s a fun, thoughtful tradition for both kids and adults. Here are some common Chinese phrases shared during the Spring Festival:
more than English and Spanish, and more and more companies are looking for Chinese-speaking employees. Plus, Chinese is a fun language to learn! The Confucius Institute at UNL offers evening and weekend Chinese classes for kids and adults from ages 6 and up. The next session starts January 22. Natural History Mystery Escape Room Experience! Submitted by the University of Nebraska State Museum–Morrill Hall
T
ry your luck at the new escape room experience inside Morrill Hall. Step back in time to the 1890’s where you and your group will try to help Nebraska Museum Director Erwin Barbour lay claim to the discovery of the world-famous Agate Fossil Beds. During his first fossil collecting expedition, Barbour was fascinated and distracted by strange, ten-foot-tall spiral sandstone formations known as the “Devil’s Corkscrews.” Preoccupied with the weird corkscrews, Dr. Barbour missed out on the discovery of a lifetime at Agate. Your group will have one hour to rewrite history by searching Dr. Barbour’s workroom to uncover clues, solve puzzles and decipher codes. Surrounded by vintage lab equipment, real fossils, and other authentic natural history objects, your unique escape room challenge is to find the professor’s field book

and missing Agate fossils. This ticketed experience is presented in conjunction with the temporary exhibit, Museum Builders: A Story of Fossils & Friendship, which tells the story of two remarkable men, Erwin Barbour and Charles Morrill, who built a grand museum in Nebraska: the University of Nebraska State Museum-Morrill Hall. In the exhibit, visitors learn about the earliest fossil explorers and get to know one of the first women to become a paleontologist. Amazing fossils and other museum specimens are also on display. Visitors learn why Nebraska has the best fossil record of mammal evolution in the Great Plains, which is why paleontologists come to Nebraska to collect millions of fossils. The escape room can accommodate up to ten people per game and lasts approximately one hour. You may choose to purchase the entire room for your group or purchase individual tickets. If you purchase individual tickets you may have a shared experience with other muse-
um visitors. A minimum of four participants is required for the escape room to operate. Participants are asked to arrive 15 minutes ahead of their scheduled time. The team will be given a brief introduction to the escape room, safety rules, and the accompanying exhibit. To purchase tickets, please call the Museum at 402-4722637. Tickets must be purchased at least 24 hours in advance; at this time, we are not able to accommodate Photo courtesy of The University of Nebraska State Museum—Morrill Hall walk-ins. lthough the 2018 Winter Olympics seem like a distant memory and the next set is three years away, never fear! Even though skiing and snowboarding are not exactly available in Nebraska, other winter sports definitely are. Here are three that you can enjoy nearby.
Ice Skating Lincoln presents two local opportunities for gliding on the ice. The Lincoln Railyard in the Haymarket features an outdoor ice rink during winter. This season opens on November 30th at 5 pm with a holiday fair. Daily admission covers the skate rental fee: $6 child, $9 youth and adults ages 12+. If you bring your own skates, you can enjoy up to one hour free per day after checking in. For safety reasons, youth under 18 need to have an accompanying adult within sight, and children under 12 must have an adult on the

The John Breslow Ice Hockey Center is an indoor rink located near the Saltdogs Stadium. Admission and skate rental are both charged: $6 adults, $5 youth, and $3 skate rental. A variety of punch cards and yearly passes are available, as well as group outings and birthday parties. If you don’t mind a short drive, Eugene T. Mahoney State Park near Ashland offers an outdoor ice skating pavilion connected to the Activity Center. The Activity Center is a huge year-round indoor jungle gym with concessions. The ice pavilion usually opens mid-November. You will need a park entry permit, available online at www.outdoornebraska.gov, or at

Curling
As you may have guessed, the John Breslow Hockey Center is a place where kids & adults can learn and play hockey. Lessons and events are offered seasonally. It’s also where you can catch the UNL men’s and women’s club teams practicing and playing. If you are more into watching hockey than playing, Lincoln’s junior ice hockey league, The Lincoln Stars, practices and plays home games at The Ice Box, a rink established for the team. Curling is a longtime sport that has only recently come to light. Stones, houses, and sweeping are all a part of this Scottish match. Although this sport has not quite made its way to Lincoln yet, it is available in the Omaha sports scene. The Aksarben Curling Club has leagues that you can join. The North American leg of the Curling World Cup is taking place in Omaha on December 5th-9th. Books about curling: •• Curling by Claire Throp •• Ice Hockey and Curling by Laura Hamilton Waxman.

Every Child Deserves Good Health Submitted by Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln (PHL)
Y
ou may have heard it said: if you don’t have good health, you don’t have anything. Unfortunately, it is also true that if you don’t have anything, you often don’t have good health. A recent health mapping project undertaken by the Community Health Endowment of Lincoln provides an interesting snapshot of neighborhood health. Would you have believed there was a 20-year difference in life expectancy from one Lincoln neighborhood to another? Lincolnites who live in our wealthiest neighborhoods live up to 20 years longer than our neighbors in the lowest income communities. Here, as in other cities across the country, racial and ethnic minorities and lower-income individuals are overrepresented amongst Americans fighting chronic diseases, like diabetes and hypertension, that can shorten a person’s lifespan. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is seeking to remove barriers to good health through
their Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH) program. Five-year REACH grants support local efforts to ensure that every child and their family, no matter their race or ethnicity, education, income, location, or any other social factors, can achieve their full potential and live a healthy, productive life. How do we know these kinds of programs work? A recent national study by the University of Kansas, the largest and most wide-ranging of its kind, looked at the success of community-based efforts in promoting healthy weights in children.
The study showed that comprehensive community programs, especially those focused on physical activity and nutrition, were associated with healthier weight, and the longer the programs and policies were in place, the more successful they were. However, the study authors said one size doesn’t fit all—nor reach all. To be most effective, programs need to be adapted to meet the needs of groups with the highest health challenges. The REACH grant was designed to do just that. Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln, in collaboration with other local non-profits, is one of only 31 REACH grant awardees in the United States. Through projects supported by the REACH grant, our coalition with the Malone Community Center, El Centro de las Americas, and other community partners will work to provide support and education on healthy choices and behaviors to those who need it most, where they live, go to school, work, and worship. The coalition will also work to connect medically underserved children and
families to resources that can support good health, active living, and good nutrition. Every child deserves a chance to live a healthy life. Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln (PHL) is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the health, wellness, and fitness of our community. We collaborate with other organizations on joint projects to improve health by increasing physical fitness, promoting healthy weights and good nutrition, supporting breastfeeding, and improving cancer screening and vaccination rates.

Student Success Requires Ratcheting Up Reading Instruction Written by Sue Helms, Title 1 Teacher, Arapahoe Public School, and Eileen Vautravers, M.D., on behalf of the Nebraska Dyslexia Association
I
n 38 years of teaching elementary school, I have seen many common traits in my students who struggle with reading, writing, and/or math. About 20 years ago I had the opportunity to attend the International Dyslexia Association’s Conference in Denver, Colorado. Since then, I have taken every workshop, training,
and class about dyslexia that I could get my hands on. As I acquired more knowledge on the subject, I realized that the commonalities I’ve observed in many struggling students are apparent characteristics of dyslexia, and that those students probably have the condition (I say ‘probably’ because I do not hold a license for the screening and diagnosis of dyslexia). Throughout the years, many parents have suggested that dyslexia “runs in the family” and is likely a source of struggle for their child. Although I am
not trained to confirm their assumptions and have been discouraged from telling an unsuspecting parent that I suspect their child may have dyslexia, I am able to teach using strategies I’ve learned that are designed to help students who might have dyslexia. Recent legislation is now empowering all Nebraska teachers to do so. LB 645, passed in 2017 by Nebraska legislature, contains the definition and characteristics of dyslexia, placing it in state statute for the first time. Common signs of dyslexia include: difficulty learning and remembering alphabet letter names, shapes, and sounds, difficulty recalling the names of objects, and struggling with sequencing, like counting numbers, listing the days of the week or months of the year, and reciting the alphabet. Some students with dyslexia have difficulty rhyming words, learning nursery rhymes and songs, and naming the beginning or ending sounds of words. Other students at risk for dyslexia may have difficulty following instructions. Some may substitute sounds in words, such as aminal instead of animal, or words in sentences, such as was for saw, or confuse “after” with “before” or “above” with “below.”
LB 1052, passed in July 2018, requires all teachers to provide instructional strategies designed for students showing common characteristics of dyslexia. A school psychologist’s diagnosis of dyslexia is no longer required for a teacher to implement these appropriate teaching strategies necessary for the student to learn to read. We must educate the teachers of today and tomorrow about how to help these struggling students succeed! LB 1052 states that beginning with the 2018-19 school year, every student showing characteristics of dyslexia shall receive evidence-based, multisensory, structured literacy instruction. Starting in July 2019, all Nebraska teacher education programs shall include instruction in best practices for teaching reading, the science and signs of dyslexia, as well as the interventions, accommodations, and assistive technology for dyslexia. In addition, the Nebraska Department of Education shall distribute their Dyslexia Technical Assistance Document to all school districts, ESU’s, and teacher education programs. A llison’s BOOK BAG Recommended reading for your Lincoln Kids! by Allison Hunter-Frederick
Everyone experiences loss throughout life, but the causes will differ, as will our reactions. The following books introduce the subject of death to youth; the first is an informative read for families, and the latter two are in story form, one for younger readers and the other for older readers. Allison Hunter-Frederick is an administrative assistant at Bethany Christian Church. She hosts a children’s book review blog at allisonsbookbag.wordpress.com, blogs for lincolnanimalambassadors.wordpress.com, and regularly contributes to Neighborhood Extra, Lincoln 55+, & Lincoln Kids! Written by Laurie Krasny Brown Illustrated by Marc Brown Designed for families with young children, When Dinosaurs Die tackles the challenging subject of death in a thorough, helpful manner. Causes of death covered by this book include old age, poverty, suicide, & war. Feelings about death range from angry denial to a poignant prayer for a father to return to life. The authors illustrate colorful cartoon panels, depicting scenes, such as honoring a loved one who has died, reactions to death, and different ways culture & faith explain death. This book is a must for families. When Dinosaurs Die is part of the Dino Tales: Life Guide for Families collection, which offers titles covering subjects such as Divorce, Good Health, and Friendship.
By Tomie dePaola
A true story, Nana Upstairs & Nana Downstairs is a sweet picture book in which dePaola draws on his childhood memories of visiting his grandmother & great-grandmother, who lived together. I love how his relationship with them slowly unfolds. His Nana Downstairs would bake him a cake to eat, and she’d twist her hair into a cow’s tail that she pinned on top of her head. His Nana Upstairs would eat candy mints with him, and she’d tell him about the “Little People” of Ireland. One day, his parents share the news that Nana Upstairs has died, offering encouragement and comfort as young Tommy copes with the loss. This multi-generational story will bring smiles and tears.
By Kathryn Erskine Mockingbird is a realistic story about tenyear-old Caitlin, who sees everything as black & white due to Asperger Syndrome, and how she deals with the shooting of her brother. Caitlin doesn’t want to hear that Devon will always be with her in a different way; she wants Devon around in the SAME way he always has been. When her counselor asks if the funeral made her uncomfortable, Caitlin thinks about how comfortable it would have been covering herself with a sweater, putting her head under a cushion, and reading her dictionary; because she couldn’t do these, Caitlin decides that she’d been uncomfortable. Mockingbird not only gives readers a genuine view of grief, but also strikes a perfect emotional chord.

“Haha! Look at Phoebe! Her neck is so long!” “Covered with fudge spots! Tall as a tree!” “At least five times the size of me!” And Phoebe just wept. What else could she do? She knew all the things they were saying were true! Where most necks at the Zoo were quite small and quite plain, Phoebe’s was tall like a giant polka-dotted candy cane. Although she was without holiday joy, Phoebe was always good… Eating all her romaine lettuce, as a good giraffe should. Way up north on this same snowy night, Old Santa Panda was wrapping animal gifts in delight. “Sweet candy carrots,” he laughed, “will be loved by the tree ‘roos!”
He shook his fluffy red cheeks (and his tummy shook too). As Santa Panda planned to spread Christmas glee, He noticed that there was no star on his big Christmas tree. He couldn’t believe he had missed the star, That signified it was Christmas for all no matter who they are. Then Santa Panda got an idea, so witty he was, and dashed away, “The animals at Lincoln Children’s Zoo could help, I think, in some way!” When E.J. the Santa Panda arrived at Animal Kingdom The first animal bedroom was so very black, He tripped on the rug and fell flat on his back. So dark he had to crawl close to the bed, And squint very hard at the bush baby’s head. The room was obscure, he couldn’t see anything at all He decided to move on, this bush baby too small. But all this took time, and filled Santa Panda with gloom, While slowly he slumped toward the next animal’s room.
Through the door he’d just opened he saw in surprise, A neck long in length, and immediately felt energized. His eyes were adjusting but the spots were all there, And there lay… but wait now! Who would you suppose? You guessed it! It was a young giraffe named Phoebe! E.J. the Santa Panda stood with a grin on his face, He started to shake her (very gently of course) to wake. Phoebe could scarcely believe her big eyes! You can just imagine her joy and surprise. Phoebe listened to Santa Panda’s worried plea That Christmas could not begin without the star atop the tree. “It’s a tall order,” he asked, “but could you save the day? Your neck is just long enough to put the tree topper on the right way!” And Phoebe broke out into such a big grin, It almost connected her ossicones to her chin! Phoebe found the star next to Santa Panda’s Christmas tree,
And happily put it at the tippy top with ease. Phoebe saw Santa Panda’s face and knew, Christmas was here, and his smile meant “thank you.” He selected a gift for her that was just right, A small little journal with a flake of snow white. She opened the book and saw a handwritten note, “Dearest Phoebe,” Santa Panda wrote, “You understand now the joy that is Christmas, Don’t ever let someone treat you with malice. For your long neck has saved our holiday fun, In my heart, you are number one. There are bullies everywhere but you should not be scared, For you are so beautiful and strong,” he declared. With a tear in her eye and joy in her heart, Phoebe looked up to the sky and whispered,
“Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”

Turning The Tale: Asking Your Kids “Why?” By Lindsay Rogers, Wildlife Education, Nebraska Game & Parks Commission
E
ver since my son started talking, I was inundated with his perpetual “why?” questions. This is especially true when we are outside exploring. Why is this rock pink? Why does that tree grow that way? Why are there so many turkey vultures? There also are the “what if” questions. What if praying mantis and a hornet got in a fight, who would win? What if we climbed to the top of the tree? What if a grasshopper was a big as us? The questions seem to never end. And, although these questions sometimes make my brain hurt, I always appreciate them. Why do I appreciate these “why” questions? Because asking “why” is the first step to becoming a critical thinker. Children have an innate sense of wonder and curiosity; by asking “why,” children are learning to comprehend the world around them. These constant questions help to build vocabulary, concepts, and understanding.
Research shows that children under five years old ask an average of 100 questions daily; by middle school, this has dropped to nearly zero. The reason for this is varied and includes the fact that as children grow they understand the world better, they need to ask fewer questions to gain new knowledge, and they are better able to use past information to answer their questions. But, a big part of the decline in asking questions is due to the fact that our society rewards the answer—not the process of asking questions. Throughout the day our children are flooded with questions focusing on rote knowledge. What is 2+2? What are the stages of a butterfly’s life cycle? By focusing our children’s attention on the answer, we are training our children to ask fewer questions. While fewer questions seem to be the dream of many parents, think about this: the process of asking questions is critical to growing the process of creativity. By asking “what if” and “why,” children are challenged to
think critically and use past knowledge to dream up an answer, even if it is not necessarily the correct answer. Preposterous answers and silliness are excellent examples of creativity. If we look at this from an adult perspective, scientists have built careers out of asking “why” and “what if.” Artists are constantly challenging themselves to be creative and experiment with new designs or processes. And, regardless of a specific career path, adults need the ability to creatively problem solve. In fact, a poll of 1,500 CEO’s identified “creativity” as the number one “leadership competency.” A study of IQ scores shows that each generation has IQ scores approximately 10 points above the previous generation. This is not shocking; children are exposed to more knowledge and our understanding of the learning process is expanding. But what is shocking is that our measured creativity has been declining for nearly 30 years. Children are less creative today than they were in the 1980s. Luckily, the solution is simple: turn the tables on our children. Ask
them “why” questions, and have fun with it! Why do you think elephants are not pink? Why do you suppose a tree’s covering is called bark? Head outside and start exploring! Start noticing the little things—golden leaves versus red leaves, the pattern of pinecones, the tiny bird tracks on fresh snow. Ask questions, even (especially) if you do not know the answer. Remember, the importance is asking these “why” and “what if” questions—and having fun!

Feeding Winter Birds BirdNerd Blurb

hhhh, the smell and feel of autumn in the air means winter is upon us. It also means that it can get difficult for our local feathered friends to find food. You can help provide meals for birds in many fun ways. A great way to start is by feeding the birds with nutritious seeds, sweets, and suet! Experiment with several varieties of bird food to see what is most successful for your yard and feeder (some feeder holes are too small or too big for some seeds), and log your findings in a bird journal for referencing in winters to come. To start, try filling your feeders with black oil sunflower seeds or safflower seeds, both of which attract a wide range of winter birds. If you don’t have a feeder, you can fill a plate or tray and place it on the ground or a deck railing. Some seeds may get mushy or go rancid when wet, so check your plate or feeder after precipitation. Another great way to help birds in winter is to offer them delicious berries. Incorporate berry bushes in your yard or garden to provide birds with sugar from the fruit and shelter in the branches. Try your hand at making seed & berry mixtures, but be wary of prepackaged mixes, as several lower-quality mixes contain dyes and junky fillers. Suet cakes and feeders are very inexpensive and easy to hang from

just about any tree branch. Suet, whether rendered from animal fat or plant-based, gives woodpeckers and nuthatches tasty fat to get through the cold months. Making suet cakes and ornaments is a fun family activity—check out the simple DIY suet recipe below from Audubon.org.

Tidbits About Turtles By Jamie Kelly, Pioneers Park Nature Center
Y
ou can always see box turtles at the Nature Center. No it’s not because we have a large population of box turtles running wild in the Lincoln area, but we do have six that live at the Nature Center as part of our live animal exhibits. Many of the box turtles at the Nature Center are in captivity due to injuries. When you visit the Nature Center you might meet Lewis, Lola, Koopa, Speedy, Stumpy or Lucky. The oldest is Stumpy with an estimated age of over 55 years old. Let’s learn a bit more about our friendly, curious, and (in our opinion) cute box turtle friends. Terrapene ornata, commonly known as the ornate turtle or western box turtle, is the only terrestrial turtle in Nebraska. It is small, about 6 inches long, and is brown with yellow lines or markings. Box turtles are omnivores, eating plants (including fruit), insects, worms, small vertebrates, and even at times carrion (dead, decaying animals). The ornate box turtle, once com-

mon throughout most of Nebraska, is often found in grasslands, including short, mixed, or tallgrass prairies, and areas with sandy soils, like the western and central (Sandhill) parts of the state. Loss of habitat has reduced the range of the box turtle in Nebraska. In the US, the ornate box turtle is found throughout the Great Plains region. Box turtles have existed for over 15 million years and can live to be up to 100 years old. All turtles are in the order Testudines; their earliest known

relatives date back over 220 million years ago (the beginning of the Triassic era, when dinosaurs existed). The shell is made up of two parts: the top part is called the carapace, and the bottom part is called the plastron. The bottom part of the shell is hinged, allowing the shell to enclose the head when retracted. Unlike some cartoon characters you may have seen, a turtle cannot crawl outside of its shell—it’s actually part of the turtle’s skeleton. There are plates that
cover the shell called scutes. These scutes are made of the same material as your fingernails. Scutes are also the name of the horny plates found on the back of a stegosaurus. There are small differences between the male and female box turtles. The males have a slightly thicker tail and a more concave plastron (bottom shell), but the easiest way to tell boys from girls is eye color. Female box turtles will have yellow-to-brown eyes, and males will have reddish eyes once they are a few years old. We have both male and female box turtles at the Nature Center. Remember, never take a wild turtle home to keep as a pet. If you see an injured turtle call the local wildlife rescue or rehab so that it can get the proper care and hopefully be released back into the wild. Visit the box turtles and other exhibit animals at the Pioneer’s Park Nature Center, Monday-Saturday 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, or Sunday noon to 5:00 pm. The Nature Center will be closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.

How To Find Answers To Your Pet-Related Questions By Charleen Engberg, Dir. of Volunteers & Education, Capital Humane Society
A
re you looking for practical information about how to prepare your pet for your baby’s arrival? Or how about tips to successfully clean up pet stains and odors? Do you need advice on how to manage your cat’s rough play or your dog’s barking? You’ll be glad to learn that there are valuable handouts available on The Capital Humane Society website that provide answers to these and other pet-related questions. The handouts explain pet behaviors and why they may be happening. You will learn successful ways to correct inappropriate behaviors using reward-based training and proven techniques. The key to success often involves patience, consistency, and an educated approach. The handouts also address ways to prevent many problems from starting in the first place. For example, with the cold weather and holidays coming up, pet owners can help prevent several occurrences by remembering the following:
•• Antifreeze has a sweet taste and can be fatal, even if an animal ingests only a small amount. Consider using embittered antifreeze. Keep pets away from areas where antifreeze is used or stored, and be sure to wipe up any spills immediately. •• Use pet-safe products for deicing on your property. •• After walking your pet outdoors, take the time to wipe off their paws and underbelly so that any residual deicing chemicals cannot be ingested or cause irritation. •• Pets need to wear identification tags in case they slip out of the house or yard and are lost in freezing temperatures. Microchipping is an important form of identification that greatly increases the odds of pets reuniting with their families. •• Pets will be most comfortable indoors where it is warm. Time outdoors during extreme cold should be limited to avoid frostbite and hypothermia.
•• Heat lamps and space heaters need to be used with caution so your pet doesn’t get burned or overheated. Regularly inspect this equipment for fire prevention. •• Animals may crawl under the hood of your car to find warmth on an engine. Knock on the hood of your car or honk the horn to alert an animal to leave and avoid injury. •• Do not leave pets in the car. Temperatures can drop dramatically and your pet can freeze. •• If your pet must be outdoors, he or she needs a safe shelter with dry bedding off the ground. Straw can provide good insulation. Be sure there are no drafts. It is important the pet has access to fresh water that isn’t frozen. •• Foods, such as chocolate, can be harmful or even fatal to pets. •• Holiday decorations and plants can cause injury. Keep them out of your pet’s reach. Capital Humane Society is an excellent resource for adopting a
new companion pet, as well as for helping you work with the pets you already have at home. To discover all the valuable topics covered for dogs, cats and small critters, go to the pets section on our website at www.capitalhumanesociety.org. Thank you for taking good care of your animals. celebrate birthdays at The Nest, families can make art together at our family art events, neighbors can attend our events and workshops, and artists can join our efforts to beautify the neighborhood through our mural projects. At the very least, we hope that walking into The Nest offers a creative retreat for anyone who wants to stop by. Come see us, see what’s new in our city, and support local art efforts to estab-
lish a way for a creative culture to flourish. You can follow us on Facebook, The Nest LNK, for more info about our upcoming programs, events, and ways to get involved!
