Meet the Cover Artist Brooks Xia Hi! My name is Brooks. I am 9 years old. I am in third grade at Cavett elementary school. I have a wonderful family: my hard-working dad, my cleanclean-wash mom, and two messynoisy but cute younger sisters. I have a pet fish named Brooks, Jr. Some of my hobbies include reading books, playing LEGOs, and trading Pokémon cards. I sometimes but barely play video games. I also play the piano and the cello. I also play basketball and soccer. Other than that, I sometimes play ping-pong with my dad. I like playing basketball when it is warm outside. I also enjoy playing soccer outside when it is warm, too. When it is recess at school, I always play Star Wars with my best friends. Drawing is another thing I love and I really don’t remember when and how I started. My sisters and I love drawing pictures. Sometimes we draw pictures to give friends as holiday greeting cards, birthday cards, thinking-of-you cards, and get-well-soon cards. Our friends love our pictures. I have been attending Art Academy Lincoln for almost a year, and I really enjoy working on an art project. I also like writing stories and books. Sometimes I write a book and give it to a friend as a gift. The end.

Nebraska’s 1st Free-Standing Birthing Center Submitted by The Good Life Birth Place
M
ost babies take nine months. This one was in the works for nearly three years. The Good Life Birth Place is the result of a long, concerted push to create a unique environment where certified nurse midwives offer preconception counseling, deliver babies, and provide well-woman care. When it opened its doors in July 2017, the Good Life Birth Place became the first and only free-standing birthing center in Lincoln. The 5,150-square-foot facility at 8020 O Street features three birthing suites, a large waiting room, three exam rooms, an education room, a kitchen, and a family room which walks out to a city park. The ambiance? Somewhere between hospital and home. Plush birthing suites put the emphasis on suite, with full or queen beds, in-room tubs, and labor-friendly Page 6 • LincolnKidsInc.com
showers. Medical equipment is stored out of view, but easily accessible. The Good Life Birth Place is designed for non-complicated pregnancies and moms who desire childbirth that is as natural as possible, with no pain medication and little medical intervention. Laboring options offered at the Good Life Birth Place include hydrotherapy, water births, aromatherapy, nitrous relaxation, and massage therapy. For more information or a tour, call 402-488-6370 or visit GoodLifeBirthPlace.com.

Stage Parents Submitted by Theatre Arts for Kids
T
he label “stage parent” is not usually said as a compliment. TV Shows like Dance Moms, the musical Gypsy, and movies like Mommy Dearest all paint a very specific picture about stage parents. But it doesn’t have to be this way. We can change this stigma! I have been hopefully preparing for years to be a “soccer mom”. I have my minivan, a collection of Thirty-One bags, and five pairs of the same yoga pants from Athleta. I am ready. WAIT! What’s that honey? You don’t want to play soccer? How about tennis? Basketball? Wrestling? Swimming? Dance? Ping pong? PLEASE, anything but theatre! I don’t want to be a stage mom! I’ve thought long and hard about this conundrum. I spent the last 20 years rewriting this label so I can conquer my own fear of it. If my child tells me she wants to do theatre, I will step proudly into my role as a stage mom, and you will NOT find my name on the blacklist. If she wants to do something else, my work will not have been done in vain. Thankfully, the do’s and don’ts can be applied to most activities, and I will gladly share them with you. When someone gives you a compliment about your child, avoid saying “Thank you.” Instead, turn it back around and emphasize how proud you are of the hard work your child puts into the activity. Saying thank you infers that you are happy to take credit for your child’s work or talent. I know, I know! It’s often a force of habit, and honestly, you could play
any part in the show because you have run those lines so many times, but your child was cast, not you, and this is their work and their compliment, not yours. Encourage your child to always fulfill their commitment. If they commit to piano lessons, they need to understand that they have committed to preparation too. Help them set aside time to practice. WAIT! Step away from the piano bench! This is your child’s practice time, not your instruction debut. I know you want to make sure that they are doing it right, but you have hired someone to do this for you. You get to be the good guy! Your only job is to encourage them and make sure that there is time set aside for practice. So then, what can you do? This is the best part. It’s so easy. All you have to do is support your child and very little else. Attend every performance you can and sign up to be the mom that cleans the toilets before the show or another job of equal glory. Do your research and find the best training for them to receive the information that they need to be the best they can be. On that note, this hopeful soccer mom is the director of Theatre Arts For Kids and is passionate about providing excellent musical and stage training for kids of all ages. This summer launches our new training program emphasizing skill building through classes and workshops that will benefit your child in all of their performing endeavors. Check out our summer flier here in Lincoln Kids! Newspaper (left) or visit TAFK.org for more information.

Finding the Right Book By Vicki Wood, Youth Services Supervisor, Lincoln City Libraries, Bennett Martin Public Library
W
hether your child is a voracious, average, or reluctant reader, as a parent, you may struggle to find the “just right” book for your child’s age, reading ability, and interest. There are a variety of tools and resources you can use to help with the search. The library staff handles hundreds of books per week, and they know who the popular, award-winning, and classic authors are for all genres of youth books. They also talk with children every day about their reading interests and stay on top of what’s new and trending in the book world. Never hesitate to ask a library staff person for a recommendation. If you want to do a bit of research, NoveList K-8 Plus is one of our online databases you can access from home or the library. Simply choose an age range and a mood—funny & witty, issue-oriented & thoughtful, or spunky & feelgood are some of the choices. There are loads of genre searches too. Keyword
Page 12 • LincolnKidsInc.com
searches, read-alikes, and award winners round out the choices. One of the most powerful functions is the ability to find books like the one your child loved. Let’s say Wonder by R.J. Palacio is your child’s favorite book. You can type in the title, then click on “readalikes” and voila! You are shown a list of titles and short synopsis to entice your child into their next favorite book. I especially love that there are non-fiction choices, too, since many kids prefer that to reading fiction. If your child is a newly independent reader, you may wonder how to assess if a book is too easy or difficult for him to read. The “Five Finger Rule” is a handy way to quickly determine if a book is a good fit. Choose the first full page of text and have your child raise a finger for every word he doesn’t know. If there are five or more words, the book may be too difficult for him to read on his own. If that’s the case, and the child is still interested in the book, suggest you read it together, alternating pages or paragraphs. Speaking of reading aloud, parents should continue this practice until
the child absolutely won’t have it anymore. Reading aloud to an older child is a terrific way to stretch their vocabulary and comprehension a little beyond their current reading level. Use this technique for eliciting family discussion about values, or issues Weaving Our Stories Together, Created by K-4th grade ELL Students at Saratoga Elementary, The ArtReach Project you may have a hard time introducing otherwise. Detour Nebraska
By Karla Goerl, Lincoln Kids! Newspaper
Recommended reading for your Lincoln Kids! by Allison Hunter-Frederick
During the winter I asked parents to share the titles of their children’s favorite books, and below are my top three. To share your recommendations, email me at allisonsbookbag@outlook.com.
FIRST READERS | Board & Sensory Books MUNCH! by Matthew Van Fleet Munch! is a colorful board book with tabs and textures that animate a cast of frolicking critters who show your kids that mouths are for more than just eating food. The animals use their mouths to laugh, hiccup, smile, pout, and so much more. My favorite interactive tab is the one that makes the busy beaver chew his tree branch! One mother stated: “The book is sturdy, the text is easy to add fun vocal inflections to, and the illustrations hold the interest of babies with short attention spans.”
YOUNG READERS | Picture Books & Stories WE’RE GOING ON A BOOK HUNT by Pat Miller We’re Going on A Book Hunt is a picture book about bears that helps kids learn how to select books for their reading level. It teaches children to begin a new book and raise a finger for each unknown word; if all five fingers are raised by the end of the page, it means the book is too hard. Author Pat Miller also teaches readers to be considerate library users. Her enthusiastic bears arrive quietly, use shelf markers, turn pages carefully, and remember to return their borrowed books. Young readers will be engaged by Miller’s catchy verse, which she modeled after the popular action rhyme “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.” One parent wrote: “The rhythm is the best, and you can change your voice to reflect the moods!”
EXPERIENCED READERS | Chapter Books & Series THE KINGDOM OF WRENLY by Jordan Quinn The Kingdom of Wrenly is a fantasy chapter book series with easy-to-read text and illustrations on almost every page. In the first book, The Lost Stone, Prince Lucas is lonely and wishes for a friend, but his parents forbid him to play with other children in the kingdom. When Lucas returns home after running away and hiding in a village school, his parents relent and allow him to play with Clara Gills, the daughter of a seamstress for the royal family. Lucas and Clara get the chance to explore other lands when they team up to find his mother’s missing emerald pendant. One recommendation states: “This is a good beginning chapter book series that my girls love to read on their own.” Allison Hunter-Frederick is an administrative assistant at Bethany Christian Church. She hosts a review blog at allisonsbookbag.wordpress.com, blogs for lincolnanimalambassadors.wordpress.com, and regularly contributes to Neighborhood Extra, Lincoln 55+, and Lincoln Kids! Newspaper.
ong-time Lincoln Kids! columnist Gretchen Garrison published her first book last year, Detour Nebraska. Upon reading the introduction, it’s clear that this book is one with which most Nebraskans will feel an instant connection. It details all the historical, famous, quirky, and little-known stop-offs all over our great state. As I dove deeper into the book, I was flooded with happy memories of my travels throughout Nebraska, especially those of childhood summer vacations. Here are a few of my favorite little detours. Smith Falls, east of Valentine: “Nebraska’s breathtaking seventy-foot-high waterfalls.” (p.76, Detour Nebraska). I remember questioning whether or not we were actually in Nebraska when we visited! Stuhr Museum, Grand Island: As a child, I couldn’t wait for “A Stitch in Time” summer camp where I learned to sew like a pioneer, and stringing popcorn to decorate the trees at “Christmas Past & Present.” (p.94) Buffalo Bill Ranch, North Platte: A kid-friendly historical destination with fun, quirk, and humor (p.108) Lake Ogallala, Ogallala: just opposite of the massive and more touristy Lake McConaughy (p.119), Lake Ogallala is a new annual trip for us. Fort Robinson, west of Crawford: One of my favorite school field trips was an overnight history trip here. Visitors are welcome to room on-site and enjoy horseback riding, paleontology discoveries, museum tours, nature hikes, and more. (p.135) Toadstool Park, Ogalala National Grassland: “Looking more like the moon than Nebraska” (p.138), toadstools are very outer-space-looking, which make hiking through them quite the adventure!
Before my parents hauled me and my three sisters into the Suburban and drove us all over Nebraska, I was pretty sure I wanted to run off to Georgia, California, or heck, even Rhode Island as soon as I graduated from high school. But that family trip changed me, and now I find myself proud to be rooted here, starting my family of friendly Nebraskans. If you are looking to excite your kids about living here in “The Good Life,” I highly recommend grabbing a copy of Detour Nebraska and mapping out your journey. As you read through the various regions and locations, you are likely to recall your own nearly-forgotten but muchenjoyed experiences, and learn new places you hope to discover with your family on your own odyssey. Their habitat will include hand-sculpted rock formations, a flowing stream, and an interactive viewing area, bringing guests up-close to one of the rarest and most endangered cats in the world. The population of Sumatran tigers in the wild is estimated to be 500. With fewer than 90 in captivity, they are the most endangered tiger species. The brothers are part of a worldwide conservation effort. “Saving animals from extinction has been at the forefront of our work for decades. The opportunity to take part in Sumatran tiger conservation is something that our Zoo and community is proud to be part of,” said Lincoln Children’s Zoo President & CEO John Chapo. Nebraska Paleontology: Amazing Fossil Finds Submitted by the University of Nebraska State Museum–Morrill Hall

id you know elephant fossils have been discovered in 90 of Nebraska’s 93 counties? Or that at its inaugural meeting in 1871, the University of Nebraska Board of Regents funded a museum cabinet (collections) to acquire and preserve the state’s plants, animals, and minerals? A new temporary exhibit featuring the history of fossil collecting in Nebraska is set to open Saturday, June 23, at the University of Nebraska State Museum-Morrill Hall. The new temporary exhibit celebrates Nebraska’s paleontology and amazing fossil finds. From early expeditions to a look into the Museum’s fourth-floor redevelopment, Cherish Nebraska, the event will include hands-on activities and opportunities to meet Museum paleontologists. In 1796, a Scottish explorer searching for a “Welsh” tribe discovered the first vertebrate fossil in what is now Nebraska. Paleontologists have since mapped the state’s geology and collected mil-
lions of fossils. These fossils were buried by sand carried from the Rocky Mountains by ancient rivers. This deposition created the best fossil record of mammal evolution in the Great Plains. Thanks to two visionaries, Charles H. Morrill and Erwin H. Barbour, today’s Museum comprises three floors of exhibits (with the fourth on its way!) and over 13 million specimens housed in eight natural history collections. Get ready to journey through the new temporary exhibit to learn how these two iconic individuals came together to create the University’s Museum, build Morrill Hall, and carve a path for the future of the Museum. Along the way, you will learn about early fossil-collecting expeditions, get to know one of the first women to become a paleontologist, and see some amazing fossils and other specimens from the Museum’s collection. Plus, you can learn special details about the Museum’s redevelopment of the fourth floor, Cherish Nebraska.

his summer, Nebraska Tourism is again encouraging participation in the Nebraska Passport program now through September 30th, 2018. The Nebraska Passport is a free program that helps travelers and residents discover the hidden gems of our great state, like museums, parks, restaurants, shops, and more! Grab a stamp from Passport stops to become eligible for prizes, awarded upon collecting 10, 25, 45, and 70 stamps. There are also drawings for additional giveaways from various businesses, and all participating children will automatically be given a special Passport surprise.
Tyson, 7, A Sunny Day in Nebraska Maxey Elementary, made at home
This year there are 70 Passport stops across the state. When you visit the destinations, ask them to stamp your booklet or Nebraska Passport app. Purchases are not required to receive passport stamps. Four of the locations can be visited in Lincoln, three of which involve food—a great excuse to spend some of your summer outside of the kitchen and enjoy a special treat. •• Piezano’s is a new Passport stop this year and a perfect destination for family pizza night. •• The Rabbit Hole Bakery in the Haymarket is also new to the program in 2018. Did you know they have gluten & dairy free options? •• The UNL Dairy Store is a return
favorite for handmade ice creams, cheeses, and more! •• Sheldon Art Gallery rounds out the Lincoln locations. Their summer exhibitions (May 29-July 29) are about Cuba. You may want to preview them before walking your child through all of the galleries. Within about an hour of Lincoln, you will find several great locations that bring history to life for children. Not only does the Durham Museum teach you about Omaha history, this summer their interactive displays will bring kids back to both World War II and even farther back to 1607 Jamestown. At Wessels Living History Farm near York, visitors step back into a 1920’s era Nebraska farm. Further west, the Plainsman Museum in Aurora brings early Nebraska to life. Enter a sod house, log cabin and stroll along their indoor town square to learn about the past in a meaningful way. The volunteers at this location add so much to the experience as they share about family history. If you want to explore the outdoors, consider stopping for a stamp at Mahoney State Park near Ashland. New outdoor adventures include a ropes course with zip lines and suspended obstacles. Further down the road, the Fontenelle Forest in Bellevue is another family fun option. If you are heading west, Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center near Denton provides acres to explore and hosts a variety of kid-friendly events throughout the year. On my website, www.odysseythroughnebraska.com, I have noted all of the Nebraska passport locations that are within ninety miles of Lincoln. To see the complete list of tours, visit www.nebraskapassport.com. Passports are available to order now, and all Passport participants are encouraged to download the Nebraska Passport app, available May 1 on Android and iPhone, for special notifications and unexpected changes to business hours. Although hours are posted for all tour locations, you may still want to call in advance before visiting. Trust me. :)

4 Reasons You Should Have Your Kids Talk to Farmers
Submitted by Fallbrook Farmers Market
4. To practice important life skills.
Learning to ask questions of adults in a clear and respectful way is an important life skill that benefits kids as they learn to navigate in the community.
T
he benefits of farmers markets are numerous—wholesome food, outdoor play, and quality family time, to name a few—but one of the most overlooked benefits is the opportunity for your kids to meet and talk to farmers. Why should you have your kids do that?
1. To discover how food is grown or
raised. Typically, farmers that sell at farmers markets love to share how the products you see were grown or raised. You can’t get this first-hand account at a grocery store or restaurant. Kids may see images of farmers, but many have never had the chance to learn from one. 2. To learn how to prepare foods for snacks and meals. Want to know what to do with that fresh kohlrabi? Ask the farmer you’re buying it from! They produce the foods they love to prepare and eat. Your kids might even be inspired to try something new! 3. To apply textbook concepts to real-life farming. Every first grader in LPS learns about life cycles, but how many get to hear about plant, animal, and insect life cycles directly from the farmers who experience them day in and day out? This is their chance to inquire and learn more!
Farmers markets provide wonderful local foods and so much more! Farmers are usually thrilled when kids are curious about them and their products because that provides the basis for building relationships that bind a community together. Join the Fallbrook Farmers’ Market, Thursdays from 4-7 p.m. June 21st through August 9th, and for two new autumn harvest markets on September 13 & October 11. Located in NW Lincoln at 570 Fallbrook Boulevard and operated by the Fallbrook Kiwanis Club, which believes all kids should have opportunities to access healthy food, play outside, read, and serve others.

Active Summers Make for Better School Years By Bob Rauner, MD MPH, President, Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln (PHL), and Julie Pearson Anderson, PHL Communications Manager
I
n the summer, kids often fall into one of two modes: active or inactive. Some see summer as a time to relax, sleep-in, and recoup from the demands of the school year. Others see it as a chance to get outdoors and burn off some energy.
The truth is, balance is everything. Kids need adequate sleep, proper nutrition, a chance to de-stress, and physical activity. However, numerous studies have shown that physically fit kids do better academically, so it’s important that kids don’t lose ground over the summer and go back to school ready to learn. Studies tracking childhood obesity confirm that kids tend to maintain or achieve a healthier weight & fitness during the school year, and then struggle over the summer break. So what can a parent do to help their child? Here are some tips and ideas to help kids stay fit and keep healthier weights over the summer: Explore parks and trails. With 125 parks and 131 trails, Lincoln is a great place to experience nature and get some exercise. Check out the family-friendly programs at the Pioneers Park Nature Center, where there’s something for all ages.
Get information about the Nature Center and other Lincoln Parks and Recreation summer fun at lincoln. ne.gov/city/parks/programs.
Speaking of trails, Lincoln is a bike-friendly community. Consider biking as a family down one of the many trails that reach around Lincoln. Don’t have bicycles? Lincoln’s new Bike Share program offers affordable rentals from 19 different stations in the city. Learn more at BikeLNK.com. The non-profit Lincoln Bicycle Kitchen also repairs or provides bikes at no cost to kids in need. For competitive fun, encourage your child to participate in the National Bike Challenge that begins in May. Lincoln took the top spot last year! Kids and families can sign up now at lovetoride.net. Summer programs. There are numerous summer programs in Lincoln for kids, including youth sports through the YMCA and activity programs through LPS Community Learning Centers and Lincoln Parks & Recreation neighborhood centers. Options range from competitive youth sports to non-competitive activities like yoga and dance. Looking for something unique? Try new things with your kids like pickle ball or disc golf. Health, Lincoln’s own social media programming dedicated to health and wellness. Indoor fun. Too hot, or raining buckets? Slip on the sneakers and take the family to an indoor mall. A couple of loops around the interior of Gateway is nearly 2 miles. Add to steps by parking away from the entrance. If you don’t feel like venturing out, Wii Sports or Wii Dance are fun indoor options. Around the house. Kids may groan, but some household chores can count as exercise. Mowing the yard, washing the car, working in the garden, or walking the dog can provide a workout that keeps kids fit. After dark. Spice up classic yard games by adding flashlights, like tag, limbo, and high-and-seek—perfect for a fun evening with friends. Snacking smart. Summer is often synonymous with junk food. It may seem obvious, but the easiest way to keep your kids from consuming junk food and sugary drinks is to simply not buy them. Whether its 12 ounces of fruit juice or 16 ounces of regular
soda, a 75-pound kid would have to walk 5-6 miles to burn off those calories. Kids will snack on whatever is on hand; if healthy options are available, that’s what they’ll eat. A little prep on the weekend can yield healthier food decisions for both kids and parents. Keep them active this summer and you’ll send them back to school this fall healthier and prepared to learn. Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln (PHL) is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the health, wellness, and fitness of our community. We collaborate with other organizations to improve health by increasing physical fitness, promoting healthy weights & good nutrition, supporting breastfeeding, and improving cancer screening and vaccination rates.

Peace of Mind & the Power of Play Submitted by Lincoln Children’s Museum
A
s I was putting my twoyear-old daughter to bed last night, my mind was whirring with questions from the day. Is she going to the right childcare? Should one of us be a stay-at-home parent? Why didn’t we take the chance to move closer to family? Was that show appropriate? Should she even have access to screen time? Was that too much sugar for one day? These are questions I ask myself on a daily basis (and just the ones I feel okay putting into print!). I don’t think being a parent has ever been described as easy, but it certainly seems to be more complicated in today’s society. We do the best we can with all the conflicting information out there, basing decisions off our upbringings and culture and the resources available to us, and we hope we’re providing a childhood for our children that won’t just prepare them to take on the world, but change it for the better.

Struggling Readers will Improve with New Bill Written by Sheri Baumgartner, Resource teacher & dyslexia specialist, Cathedral of the Risen Christ Elementary, on behalf of the Nebraska Dyslexia Association
A
s a teacher, I cannot express how excited I am about the passage of LB1052! My degrees in elementary and early childhood education serve me well to teach preschool & Pre-K, but when I began helping my school’s most struggling students, I realized just how ill-prepared I really was. Like most classroom teachers, I was qualified to teach in a way that reaches 80% of students. I was not aware that there would be 20% of students for whom learning did not come easily, and I had not received instruction on how to reach them. All of this surprised me, because I also hold an early childhood special education endorsement. In my training, there was discussion about ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, autism, Asperger’s, and more. Never was there any mention of dyslexia, dyscalculia, or dysgraphia, the primary learning disabilities in reading, math and writing. Two and a half years ago, I was educated about dyslexia and related conditions. I began to see that this was not an isolated issue within my school or my world. I knew I needed more tools than what I had, so I trained and became qualified to screen for dyslexia and to provide the reading instruction that students with dyslexia require in order to become good readers. Last year, our school began screening students for dyslexia and implemented an early intervention program. At fall, every first grader is screened using C-TOPP (Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing). Every student who scores below average, or
lower in at least two subtests, qualifies for elective tutoring. Children whose screening yields characteristics of dyslexia are paired with a tutor. These in-school tutors provide free tutoring twice a week using an evidence-based Orton Gillingham program. Last fall’s screening at Cathedral of the Risen Christ identified five children in need of phonological processing support. Two of these children blossomed into great readers after receiving tutoring for six months. Another child in fourth grade was convinced that he was stupid and incapable. In fifth grade we implemented tutoring and accommodations for him; he went from reading two grade levels behind to reading on grade level after just one semester. As a current sixth grader, he is no longer placed in resource classes and has made the honor roll twice; he continues support and accommodations in school and at home. Another student in sixth grade who participated in the program went from reading at a second-grade level to reading at a fourth-grade level. We see successes, big and small, with the Orton Gillingham program. And while it is time intensive, it is not unachievably expensive or difficult. I also have a personal connection to dyslexia. My oldest child struggled throughout school. I was reassured by teachers that she was behind, but she would catch up. As a young mother, I was unaware that ‘catching up’ does not happen often, and not without rigorous interventions. As I received my screening training, I realized that her reading and writing habits, techniques, and struggles were likely the result of dyslexia. She was found to display characteristics consistent with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia. Knowing the cause of my students’
It’s time to schedule school & sports physicals!
learning struggles made me seek a remedy. My only regret is that this knowledge came later than it should have. Students deserve more than to sit in a classroom and not know how to read their textbooks, write a story, or solve a multi-step math problem. It isn’t their fault that they are in the 20% minority who access information differently, and they shouldn’t be penalized for it. I firmly believe that most teachers want to help their struggling students, but often lack the knowledge and tools to do so. I also believe that the access to a good education is a basic right of every student and should be granted to all, whether they attend public, private, or home schools. Bill LB1052 will place the power to change students’ lives in educators’ hands. LB1052 stipulates that starting in the 2018-2019 school year, every student with characteristics of dyslexia shall receive evidence-based multi-sensory structured literacy instruction. Starting in July 2019, all Nebraska teacher education programs shall include instruction in best practices for teaching reading, and the science and signs of dyslexia, plus interventions, accommodations and assistive technology for dyslexia.

What Has Nature Done for You? By Lindsay Rogers, Wildlife Education Specialist, Nebraska Game & Parks Commission
I
t seems as though we often think and decide in terms of what does this mean for me, whether it regards the stock market, job market or supermarket. With that in mind, I thought I would take this approach when talking about nature and wildlife, what do nature and wildlife have to do with me? Well, for starters, there is the air you breathe. Animals breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. Plants, on the other hand, work in reverse. They “breathe” in carbon dioxide and release oxygen. Without plants, we would quickly use all the oxygen in the atmosphere and not survive. Plants also provide us with food. Humans plant many of these plants in the form of agricultural crops, but some are native plants. And then there are the bees,
Page 28 • LincolnKidsInc.com

butterflies, wasps and even birds, which help pollinate our plants. In Nebraska, some of the crops that require pollination from animals include apples, clover (critical to feeding cattle in many operations), tomatoes, cucumbers, and pumpkins. Think about Halloween without the squash bee—there would be no pumpkins to carve! Beyond plants, nature provides us humans with so much more. Bats are
an excellent example. They not only are incredibly amazing to watch, but they also help control insect populations. A single little brown bat can consume over 1,000 insects in just one hour. I doubt I could find a safer, more effective insect control at the hardware store! And, don’t forget about snakes. Yes, even snakes have something to offer you. Snakes eat mice, rats and other nuisance animals that have a
way of getting into our homes and spreading diseases. Without snakes and other rodent predators like hawks, owls, and foxes we would be inundated with rodents! If you want to think of things from an economic point of view, let’s investigate ecotourism. Simply put, ecotourism is a type of tourism which involves visiting natural areas and observing native wildlife in a way that conserves the land and its resources. Tourism is Nebraska’s third largest industry, and ecotourism is a large, growing part of this industry. Without nature, we would be missing these wonderful opportunities and revenue sources. All in all, nature has a lot to offer you, but don’t take it for granted. Nature needs your help, too. This summer, take time to plant some milkweeds—the butterflies will thank you. Decide to go chemical free in your quest for a weedless garden—the pollinators will thank you. And, most importantly, get out and explore, wonder, and wander in nature—your kids will thank you!

Gardening for the Birds BirdNerd Blurb

B
ird and nature lovers are still celebrating 2018 as the Year of the Bird, and this summer there are many fun and simple ways for the whole family to join the fun. One of the best ways is to plant native plants…together! Native trees, shrubs, flowers, and grasses make excellent habitats and food for our feathered friends; they especially help birds when migrating, nesting, and feeding chicks. If you’re not sure what to plant, check out the Plants for Birds database at Audubon. org, type in your zip code, and a locally-specialized list will generate. Plant your selections in your garden, backyard, or, with permission, in a school, church, or other community yard. Some places even host neighborhood planting events!
Oftentimes, planting and tending garden is seen as an adult-only chore, but it can easily become a fun family activity! Start the season by taking a family outing to a local nursery to pick out plants. Then, spend an afternoon outside together and get to planting! Infants & babies can enjoy the fresh air in a pack-n-play or backpack-style carrier, while older children can help dig up the dirt, gently loosen roots, place seeds, and make friends with worms! Remember to wear sunscreen and protective clothing, keep well hydrated, and head inside for breaks on hot days. Continue the fun by using your new plants for learning! Count petals and leaves, and get creative with trimmings. Children can research and learn about their chosen plants and help set up a care routine. Younger children will also enjoy using the colors, shapes, smells, and textures for sensory development. Don’t forget to enjoy birdwatching together! Birds will soon be spending time in your family garden, too. Continue to learn from your gar-
den by counting, tracking, describing, drawing and photographing the different species in a bird journal.

When to Help Baby Animals Submitted by Pioneers Park Nature Center
I
n the spring and summer, baby birds, bunnies, and turtles are common in our neighborhoods and parks. Here are some tips to keep in mind when trying to decide if an animal needs help from humans. Baby Mammals • Baby squirrels found out of their nest will likely be rescued by their mother. If they are not in danger, leave them be so the mother can find them. A mother rabbit will leave her nest unattended during the day. Do not worry if you don’t see her, as she will likely return when it is low light and safer to feed her young. Mother deer leave newborn fawn hidden in the grass or brush and will periodically return to that location throughout the day to feed and care for her young. Baby Birds • First, take a look at the bird to establish maturity. Does it have feathers? If so it is a fledgling and is learning to fly. The mother is probably not far away and will bring it food until it is strong enough to fly, which may take few days. If it is younger than a fledgling and doesn’t have full feathers yet, it is ok to put the baby back in its nest—the parents will continue to care for it. Remember to give the mother time to return without humans present. If you go back hours later or the next day and the babies have not been cared for, then it might be time to call for assistance from your local wildlife rehab or rescue group. Turtles and Hatchlings • Turtles lay eggs in late summer and fall. Young turtles spotted in the spring are likely hatchlings from fall that spent winter in the nest. The mother turtle does not stick around to care

If it is safe for you, you can help the turtle move across the road in the direction it was trying to go, even if they are going away from a pond. It is likely a female on her way to make a nest. Injured Animals • When any wild animal is injured (bleeding, puncture wound, broken bone, etc.) you will want to reach out right away to a rescue or rehab group so the animal can receive proper care:

Summer Care Tips for Pets By Charleen Engberg, Dir. of Volunteers and Education, Capital Humane Society
S
ummer can be a fun season to spend quality time with your pets. In addition to your normal play and interaction together, consider some new activities. Try new recipes for healthy treats, like peanut butter popsicles for your dog. Read books out loud to your furry friends—it gives them attention while keeping your reading skills polished.
Independence Day can be a lot of fun for people, yet is often a very stressful holiday for pets. They may run away and get lost due to the noise and smell of fireworks. And, like people, pets may also be injured by the fireworks. Your pet will appreciate being kept safe inside away from these possible dangers during this holiday. Additionally, remember these tips to help prevent heat stress, heat stroke,
and other summertime ailments: •• Never leave your pet in the car. Even with the windows down, it can become dangerously hot very fast. To prevent a tragedy, leave your pet at home in the comfort of air conditioning. •• Your pet needs clean, cold water at all times. •• When outside, make sure your pet has access to shade. Air should be able to circulate, so shade under a tree is better than an enclosed space like a shed or dog house. •• Walk your dog during the cooler hours of the day, such as early morning or in the evening. Asphalt and pavement can be very hot on a dog’s pads, so walking in the grass may be a better choice. •• Cars can leak anti-freeze in the summer. Anti-freeze has a sweet taste and can be fatal to your pet, even when only small amounts are ingested. Keep pets away from areas where antifreeze is
Page 32 • LincolnKidsInc.com
used and thoroughly wipe up spills immediately. •• Lawn fertilizers and pesticides can be harmful to pets. Avoid recently treated areas and consider pet-safe alternatives for your own yard. • D iscuss health concerns with your veterinarian and ask them about proper flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives. Be smart and make informed decisions for a safe and happy summer. All your friends at Capital Humane Society thank you for being kind to animals and taking good care of your pets all year long. Out of the Box? Litter Training Your Feline
P t T lk
with Allison Hunter-Frederick, Reader, Writer, Blogger, & Animal Lover AllisonTalksPets@gmail.com
I
f you’ve ever faced the challenge of a cat not using its litter box, you’re not alone. At least 10% of cats have litter box problems. It’s a common reason cats are surrendered to shelters. To spare your cat this fate, there are two things you can do: 1) take your cat to the vet to treat an underlying medical condition; and 2) if your cat receives a clean bill of health, try behavioral intervention. By the time they’re four weeks old, most kittens will have been taught by their moms what and where the bathroom is. However, when you bring home a new kitten, it’s still important to show her the litter box location. It may also help if you take her front paws and show her how to scratch the litter after her first few meals and naps. The same steps apply when bringing in a stray cat, except you may need to start with the material he
likely used outside, such as soil, sand, leaves, or grass. You can slowly transition to store-bought litter over several weeks. Help him develop a routine of using the litter box by calling him to it after he’s eaten, played, or napped. Praise him for approaching the litter box, then for getting in, and again for using it. What about a cat who occasionally misses the litter box? Never punish her when she’s near the litter box. You’ll be teaching her that a litter box is a bad place, making her more likely to avoid it in the future. Clean and treat soiled areas with an odor-neutralizing product and, if possible, visually change the area by adding furniture or decorations. Finally, if your cat sniffs around a forbidden area, redirect her gently but firmly towards the litter box. If your cat stops using the litter box entirely, put on your problem-solving hat by asking yourself the following questions: •• Is the litter box clean? Scoop the waste from the box daily, and clean it with soap and water weekly.
•• Is the litter box in the right location? Cats don’t like to soil near where they sleep or eat, so put the litter box somewhere else. Many cats prefer quiet and calm spots. •• Is the litter box the right type? Some cats fear covered boxes that hinder escape, while others feel more secure in them. Similarly, some cats detest the noise of self-scooping boxes while others aren’t bothered. •• Is the litter box the right size? Cats need to have room to turn around and give the litter a few kicks. The recommended size is 1.5 times the length of the cat (not counting the tail), and as wide as the cat is long. Also, the recommended depth is 6 inches, but kittens and seniors will need at least one lower side •• Do you have enough litter boxes? The rule of thumb is to have at least one more than the number of cats, and to have at least one on each level of your home. •• Is the litter the right type? Most cats prefer unscented, clumping litter. However, cats can be choosy
about litter, so be prepared to try several types if necessary. •• Did you change anything in your house around the time your cat stopped using the litter box? If so, consider changing it back. If your cat still regularly misses the litter box, you might need to retrain him. Email me at allisontalkspets@ gmail.com or consult your veterinarian or feline behaviorist for advice.

We Are All Creative
By Tamara Kay, Executive Director
artreachproject.org “Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while”
A
– Steve Jobs
s an artist, most people respond to me by quickly dismissing themselves, “Oh I’m not an artist,” they say. Would you believe it if I said that EVERYONE is? Maybe the operative word should shift Page 42 • LincolnKidsInc.com
from “Artist” to “Creative.” Yes, research shows that we are all extremely creative! In 1968, Scientist George Land, who developed the Transformation Theory (a theory of natural processes that integrates principles of creativity, growth, and change), designed and conducted a Creativity Test on children ages 3 to 5. He tested the same children at ten years of age, and again at 15 years of age. The shocking results were as follows: The creativity in 5-year-olds was 98%, by age ten it was 30%, and as 15-year-olds it decreased to 12%. The same test was given to 280,000 adults which showed the average level of creativity was a mere 2%. The conclusion? Non-creative behavior is learned.
Not your typical art studio, The ArtReach Project is passionate about creating not just art but artists. We believe that creativity is a skill that can be learned as well as recovered. It’s an abstract process of which many people find uncomfortable. Void of stepby-step rules to follow and performance evaluators, creativity naturally flows from the desire to explore and a spirit of curiosity. Skill training is important, yes, but in the context of cognitive awareness and realistic exercises. What does that mean? It means that learning to think like an artist is as important as learning to be one. It’s creativity training, and it’s what we specialize in. We recognize that creativity, once lost, can be intimidating and this is where self-criticism and the
fear of failure have moved in. We promote a non-competitive environment where “idea sharing” is a vital component and focus on instruction and the freedom to make independent decisions are carefully balanced. We believe it’s important to let the process lead the way to the product and not the other way around. We play with ideas, generate experiments, and allow possibilities to occur. At The ArtReach Project, we believe that creativity is more than a way of life, it’s a lifeline. Stop by this summer and join a project, play in our creative space, or sign up a child for one of our Creative Summer Camps. We are devoted to finding ways for you to engage your creative side that not only benefit you but our community as well.
