love the Fall edition. It covers everything from the dog days of summer to back-to-school, trickor-treating, and everything in between. The shift from pool parties & popsicles to crunchy leaves & pumpkin-everything is so visually dramatic, so magical, it’s practically tied with summer as my favorite season. I don’t even like pumpkin spice all that much (shhhh, you heard nothing!), but the warm colors and flavors of autumn make my heart glow and sparkle like the campfires that will soon be filling our weekends. Just thinking about it floods my mind with the sweet smell of apple cider & s’mores... That being said, summer went by way too fast, so we’re trying to sneak in as many parks, day trips, summer concerts, outdoor movies, starry nights, and campouts as possible. Thankfully, LK! helps us check off some of those last summery events, like Grace’s Free Family Fun Night on August 7th (p. 25), and LCM’s Tractors, Trucks, Trains & Planes on August 18. September and October have tons of exciting bucket-list items, too. Check out the following that I’ve cherry-picked—er, I mean apple-picked—from this edition: • See & do everything at the Lancaster County Super Fair, Aug. 2-5 (Kids’ Rodeo, Mutton Bustin’, Exotic Petting Zoo, & so much more, all for FREE—just grab tickets at Russ’s, Super Saver, Casey’s, or West Gate Bank!) • Meet up with family at the Nebraska State Fair in my hometown, Grand Island, Aug.

24-Sep. 3 (Save money with discount days & bundles, including free admission until noon on opening day! StateFair.org.) • Go canoeing at Holmes Lake on Aug. 29 (free!) & grab a Wild Wagon Ride at Pioneers Park on Sep. 22 (p. 14) • Celebrate Nebraska City’s 50th Applejack Festival, Sep. 21-23 (p. 3 & 15) • Play in the streets at Streets Alive! on Sep. 23 (p. 18, new Fun Run/Dog Walk this year!) • Climb the trees at Arbor Day Farm on Sep. 29 & Oct. 13 (p. 3, I am kid-in-a-candystore excited for this!) • Take a day trip & spend a Saturday at Helgoth’s Pumpkin Patch in St. Libory • Attend “Spamalot” for a good laugh at Haymarket Theatre (Oct. 11-13, p. 20) • Catch TAFK’s FREE performance of “Orphans on Broadway” on Oct. 27 (p. 23)

We’re also introducing Kenny to trickor-treating at Boo at the Zoo (p. 2) and Trunk-or-Treat at Grace Lutheran (see below!). Then we’ll wrap up Halloween week with the Kiwanis Pancake Festival on Nov. 3 (p. 27). Of course there’s oodles more to do all season long. Discover more throughout the pages of LK! and follow Lincoln Kids! Newspaper on Facebook & Instagram for updates & new events!

Meet the Cover Artist Clarissa Tan I am 14 years old and starting 9th grade at East High. This painting of Hogwarts combines two of my favorite things: art and Harry Potter. I got into Harry Potter around age 7, when my mom introduced me to the movies. From there, I became seriously obsessed. I listened to the audiobooks 24/7 and repeatedly read the books. We also watched the movies every weekend. Around that time, I was also Clarissa on a recent trip to Japan accepted into the LPS art mentor program. As a young child, I drew tons of pictures, from mermaids to random swirls. These, along with some other pieces, were submitted in a portfolio to the program. So in 2nd grade, I met Max Reis, who would be my mentor and friend for the next four years. He taught me a variety of art genres, and we completed several works together. Although middle school didn’t allow art mentors, we reconnected during the biography project in 6th grade. I chose Max and learned tons about him during our interviews. Aside from art, I also enjoy piano, violin, math, and travel. I’ve been playing piano for nine years now, and violin for 5. I don’t have any pets or siblings, just my parents. Overall, I’m glad my Hogwarts painting was chosen by Lincoln Kids! It looks great on my Harry Potter shelf.

Back to School Success

Rethinking Physical Education and Recess By Dr. Bob Rauner & Julie Pearson Anderson, Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln

W

hat do kids need from their time spent in school to help them on their journey to success in life? Among other things, most parents would say they want their kids to “do well” in school. “Doing well” in school most often translates to kids doing well academically. With the emphasis on test scores over the last decade, school minutes devoted to things like music, art, and physical education (P.E.) has dwindled, and recess has even been abolished in some cases. While tacking those stolen moments onto classroom time for math, reading, and science sounds like the answer to increasing student proficiency in those areas, there are flaws in that reasoning. The lack of physical activity is taking its toll on student fitness, and that’s bad for developing brains, research says. Additionally, there is a saturation point for learning at which new information is no longer absorbed.

Some elementary schools have incorporated physical activity “brain breaks” into the school day. These fun breaks help kids refocus their attention and emotions and burn off some energy, all of which helps reinforce learning. While brain breaks and unstructured play (recess) certainly have value, they are not a substitute for physical education. P.E. is a curriculum that teaches kids the physical skills to be healthy for life. Multiple research studies have shown that kids who are physically fit are stronger academically and score

higher on standardized math, reading, and science tests. The question is then, how do we keep kids fit when most of their time is spent in schools where P.E. curriculum is decreasing? P a r e n t s often turn to after-school activities, but not all families have the time, transportation, or resources to involve their children in those extracurriculars. Physical health should be made available for all children. It’s time to rethink physical education and recess. Health experts say that kids need a minimum of 150

minutes per week of P.E. curriculum in addition to recess and physical activity breaks within the classroom. In Lincoln elementary schools, P.E. time ranges from a low of 42 minutes per week to a high of 83 minutes per week, far under the recommended 150 minutes. What does that mean for parents? It means that the extra minutes spent on math, reading, and science might be wasted without ensuring the appropriate amount of physical education is met at school. If you want to ensure that your child “does well” in school, help him or her exercise their body and mind by advocating for 150 minutes of physical education curriculum each week, along with daily recess. Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln (PHL) is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the health, wellness, and fitness of our community. We collaborate with other organizations on joint projects to improve health by increasing physical fitness, promoting healthy weights and good nutrition, supporting breastfeeding, and improving vaccination and cancer screening rates.

Healthy Homework Goals Written by Gwelda Carlson, Nebraska Dyslexia Association

T

he purpose of assigning homework is for the child to practice and strengthen academic skills. It’s the quality of homework that matters, not the quantity. “Homework usually falls into one of three categories: practice, preparation, or extension. The purpose usually varies by grade. Individualized assignments that tap into students’ existing skills or interests can be motivating. At the elementary school level, homework can help students develop study skills and habits and can keep families informed about their child’s learning. At the secondary school level, student homework is associated with greater academic achievement.” —Review of Educational

Research, 2006, “Research Spotlight on Homework”, www.nea.org

The National Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and National Education Association (NEA) support the “10-minute Homework Guideline” suggested by researcher Harris Cooper: 10-20 minutes per night in the first grade, and an additional 10 minutes per grade thereafter. The focus for young children should be to cultivate a love of learning. Young children often don’t have the study skills to fully benefit from homework. “A more effective activity may be nightly reading, especially if parents are involved. The benefits of reading are clear: if students aren’t proficient readers by the end of third grade, they’re less likely to succeed academically and graduate from high school.” —Leila Fiester, Early Warning Confirmed, 2013

defined. It is “extra practice” to reinforce concepts learned in class. The amount of time required to complete homework varies from student to student.

Tips for Parents 1. Be involved. Know your child’s

teachers. Set aside time to guide your child during homework time. 2. Schedule a regular study time. 3. Provide a quiet, consistent homework space without distractions and clutter. That means no TV, electronic devices, or loud music. 4. Set a good example. Work on your budget, work-related tasks, or read a book. 5. Praise your child’s work and efforts. Display accomplishments. If you find that your child struggles with schoolwork or homework even after putting in the time, ask for help. Speak up as soon as you can so you can get help before your child falls behind. Your child’s teacher, special education coordinator, speech language pathologist, or school psychologist can provide guidance about what school services are available. Request a meeting and possible evaluation to determine why your child is having difficulty learning. Sunny Day Point ‘n’ Match

Giraffes Can’t Dance

The One and Only Ivan

Written by Rosie Winget Illustrated by Lily Lane

Written by Giles Andreae Illustrated by Guys Parker-Rees

Written by Katherine Applegate Illustrated by Patricia Castelao

Sunny Day Point ‘n’ Match is a colorful and sturdy board book that gives parents a fun activity to do with their toddlers. Together families can talk about objects, sounds, seasons, and more. Items to find are illustrated at the top of the pages. Inside the cover is a list of other ways you can use the book, including matching shapes, finding favorite colors, counting related objects, and making sounds from nature. There are several other Point ‘n’ Match titles available to create a collection. One parent told me that reading Sunny Day daily helped their son learn memory and matching skills by age one!

Giraffes Can’t Dance is a fun story with an inspiring message. Gerald is a tall giraffe whose knees are crooked and legs are thin. Unfortunately, although he is excellent at standing tall and munching shoots off trees, he isn’t so good at dancing, which poses a big problem for the giraffe at the annual Jungle Dance. Gerald’s situation ends on a happy note, and readers can find hope in Andreae’s message about self-esteem and perspective. In addition, Parker-Rees’s bold artwork exudes a party vibe and the rhyming text has a lively style that children and parents will both enjoy.

The One and Only Ivan should be on every animal lover’s list of mustread books. The plot drew me in to the world of a gorilla who lives in a glass-enclosed display in a mall. Ivan fills his days drawing bananas, watching television, and talking with friends. I love how Applegate integrates the theme of friendship and hope. Ivan seems content until a kidnapped baby elephant joins the mall menagerie and his friend Stella becomes sick. Slowly he’s forced to remember his past and fight for a better life for himself and his friends. I quickly found myself mesmerized by this easygoing gorilla who has unique ways of expressing himself.

With the goal of reaching all parents in our community about the importance of reading aloud to their child at least 15 minutes each day, a small but powerful group of professionals have been meeting, connecting, and promoting the read aloud message to parents all over Lincoln. Powered by the

focus of Prosper Lincoln on the importance of early childhood literacy, and a grant from the Institute of Library and Museum Services (IMLS), Read Aloud Lincoln was formed by two retired LPS librarians, Nancy Larimer and Mary Reiman. Together they have connected with Lincoln City Libraries and area museums, including Lincoln Children’s Museum, Nebraska History

Museum, Midwestern African Museum of Art, and the University of Nebraska State Museum, with this goal: “To have every child ready to read when entering kindergarten, and continue to build their literacy skills during their early school years. This can happen when parents read aloud 15 minutes a day, every day. It’s the single most important thing they can do to prepare their child for reading and learning.”

Experience a New Exhibit Floor Inside Morrill Hall Submitted by the University of Nebraska State Museum–Morrill Hall

Opening February 2019

V

isitors to the University of Nebraska State Museum– Morrill Hall will soon be able to experience Nebraska and natural history in entirely new ways due to major enhancements to the iconic museum at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (UNL). After being closed to the public for more than 50 years, the fourth level of the historic 1920s-era Morrill Hall will be transformed into state-ofthe-art exhibits using modern technology. Plans include the installation of innovative and interactive science exhibits that will be on par with other Smithsonian affiliates. Expanded educational opportunities are planned for visitors of all ages.

Landscapes Through Time Visitors will be greeted by the iconic ambush predator Barbourofelis and the extinct Giant Bison when

they arrive. Nebraska has one of the best fossil records in the world for the interval of time called the Miocene (23 million years to 5.3 million years ago).

Nebraska Science In this gallery, the excitement of scientific discovery is combined with the dedicated work involved by showcasing collections in the Visible Science Laboratory. Modeled after Smithsonian working lab exhibits, this space will be used to prepare fossils and other scientific specimens by staff scientists and volunteers. Visitors will follow the work of UNL scientists from field to laboratory, richly illustrated by videos, an interactive field station, and an interactive Nebraska research discovery wall, complete with specimens and microscope stations for further exploration.

Science Exploration Zone Visitors are invited to explore their natural history questions, sketch and write about their findings, create their own collections, and in the

warmer months, observe honeybee behavior in a working hive.

Sustainable Earth A state-of-the-art digital exhibit, the Sustainable Earth gallery will feature a fivefoot diameter projection globe. Visitors will learn about Earth’s interrelated weather and climate processes and their relationship to Nebraska and the Midwest region.

Transforming the Prairie

Nebraska Ecoregions

This gallery provides guests with the story of Nebraska, from the arrival of the Paleoindians to present-day urban and agricultural land use. Through the lens of how people changed the prairie, this gallery asks the visitor to ponder the value of water and other natural resources, as well as how small changes in how we live can have a significant impact on sustaining natural resources for future generations.

Nebraska has a surprisingly complex landscape, and this gallery orients the visitor to Nebraska’s highly visible, as well as hidden, treasures. Visitors will navigate the major ecological regions (ecoregions) and water systems to understand how they tie together. For more information on the fourth floor renovation project, please visit museum.unl.edu/fourthfloor.

Your Fall Bucket List of Adventure! Submitted by Pioneers Park Nature Center

H

ere are some suggestions of things to do in the great outdoors right here in Lincoln. We hope you can check-off a few from your list this fall! Take a wagon ride around the Nature Center. Come to the Nature Center on Saturday, September 22, from 11am-4pm, for our Wild Wagon Ride Weekend where guests can enjoy a hayrack ride tour of Nature Center areas not usually open to the public. Cruise past the elk, see if you can spy the white-tailed buck, and roll past the bison herd on this unique wagon ride. The wagon is a modified hayrack with bench seating for your comfort. The first ride takes off at 11:30am, with new departures every half hour; the last one will return at 4:30pm. Space is limited. To guarantee seating for you and your family or friends, please purchase tickets in advance ($4 per person). You will choose your departure time when you buy your tickets. Arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled

Page 14 • LincolnKidsInc.com

time to get to the loading zone before departure. Remaining tickets are firstcome-first-serve. Food vendors will be on site during the wagon rides for guest to enjoy during this fun fall day at the Nature Center. Wish upon a star. Stargaze on clear nights this fall. The best time to stargaze is on or around a new moon—August 11, September 9, and October 8—when there is less moonlight in the sky. City lights also often interfere with stargazing, so try to find an area with little-to-no light. Driving just outside of the city can help you see the sky in a whole new way and leave you and your children with a memorable experience. Not sure what to look for? Visit the Hyde Memorial Observatory and learn about the night sky from knowledgeable volunteers. The Observatory, located in Holmes Park, is open year-round every Saturday night: August from sundown to 11pm, September from 8-11pm, and October from 7-10pm. Admission is free! Call 402-441-7094 or visit hydeobservatory.info for more info.

Experience an evening at the Nature Center after dark. Join us for a fall Night Hike on Friday, October 26th, 7:30-9:00pm. It begins after sunset, allowing visitors to enjoy the sights and sounds of the nocturnal natural world. If it is a clear evening we’ll hike to a spot to enjoy the moonrise. An adult must accompany children. The cost is $8.50 per person. Please register by October 24th. Volunteer to help with prairie restoration. The Nature Center is always looking for volunteers! We will be holding a Prairie Seed Collection event on October 13 from 9-11am. Volunteers will collect seeds from the grasses and forbs (flowering plants) in the prairie. These seeds are distributed in areas with less diversity to enhance the prairie ecosystem. No prior experience is necessary. Dress for the weather and wear suitable shoes for walking off-trail in the prairie, and bring work gloves if you have them. This event is open to all ages, children must be accompanied by an adult. All volunteers or parent/

guardians must also sign a waiver before participating. Register to volunteer by Wednesday, October 10. For more information about enjoying the Nature Center or attending any of our events, please contact 402-441-7895, naturecenter@lincoln. ne.gov, or parks.lincoln.ne.gov (keyword: nature program).

his year marks Nebraska City’s 50th anniversary of the AppleJack Festival, a city-wide celebration of the harvest season. This year’s festival, held September 21-23, is an AppleJack Flashback featuring fan-favorite events from years past, including water barrel fights, apple baking and peeling contests, go-cart races, and more! If you’ve never been, it’s the perfect year to attend! Nebraska City is one of our state’s oldest towns. The nationally-known AppleJack Festival brings well over 60,000 visitors to the small town of 7,347 (2016 census). Between the parade, craft fairs, car show, carnival, fun run, and of course delicious food, there is plenty of exciting family activities to make braving the crowds worthwhile. doughnuts and apple fritters are worth it to me. The festival’s schedule is available at GoNebraskaCity.com. There’s plenty of apple-picking and fall festivities that take place all season long, making Nebraska City a fun town to visit. Nearby orchards and pumpkin patches host entertainment, kids’ activities, and acres of youpick apples, pumpkins, vegetables, and other fruits! Our family really likes the Tree Adventure at Arbor Day Farm, which includes a 50-foottall tree house, scenic trails, nature explore classrooms, and more. We’ve even bought a family membership a few times to make our visits more affordable, despite not living in town. How did Nebraska City become famous for apples? Long ago, J. Sterling Morton, an early Nebraska resident, founded Arbor Day, the now national April holiday. He and his wife’s desire for a tree-filled world resulted in the Arbor Day Farm and orchards. The Morton’s original estate, the Arbor Lodge State Historical Park at Arbor Day Farm, is open to the public year-round (does not require a

park permit) and the historic 52-room mansion is available for group tours (call 402-8738757 to schedule). Discover all the family fun of Arbor Day Farm at ArborDayFarm. org. A list of their fall events can be found on page 3. Not traveling this fall? Bring the apple ambiance to your home with these family-favorite books:

ith fall arriving, birds will start migrating back to their southern homes, like Texas, Mexico, or all the way down to the jungles of South America. Our feathered friends that were visiting Nebraska and places north of here for the summer will soon take to the sky, and many times will travel all day and night to reach their destinations. For their long journey ahead, migratory birds will need nutritious food sources like bugs, berries, and seeds—and you can help! Autumn is a great time to plant fruit-bearing shrubs and bushes for birds. Native Nebraska dogwoods, elderberry, and chokeberry bushes offer sweet, sugary berries that give birds the energy they need to endure

their long flights. You also get the honor of watching native and visiting birds enjoy these berries if you have them in your yard. Look for meowing Gray Catbirds, lovely patterned Cedar Waxwings, and possibly even the more rare and sneaky Swainson’s Thrush.

mentoring that the young people receive through 4-H plays a vital role in helping them achieve future life successes. In Lancaster County, there are four ways to get involved: •• Help form a new 4-H club •• Be an independent member •• Join an existing 4-H club (limited availability) •• Participate in 4-H activities, such as camps Families are encouraged to help organize a new club—which is a lot easier than you may think! It’s great if you know other adults interested in starting a club with you, but if not, 4-H can set you up with other volunteers wanting to help start a club, too! For more information, call Extension at 402-441-7180 or go to www.lancaster.unl.edu/4h.

Be Flood Safe! Submitted by City of Lincoln Watershed Management Division

D

uring heavy rain events, curbside gutters can quickly turn into rivers as water is carried to storm drains. If there is too much water, streets can become flooded because there is nowhere else for it to go. Sometimes there is so much water, you can hardly believe your eyes! Flooding does not happen every day, and seeing it can be very exciting for children. As fun as it sounds, playing in floodwater is not safe. Floodwater can contain chemicals such as oil, anti-freeze, fertilizers, and pesticides. It can also carry bacteria that can make you sick. Floodwater is murky and can hide hazards like washed-out roads or holes in the ground. It also picks up everything in its path and moves it around. Sharp objects can lurk just below the surface and cause injury if you step or trip on them. Always use caution when walking, bicycling, or riding in a car near flooded areas. If floodwater is blocking your path, do not attempt to cross! It only takes six inches of fast moving water to knock you off your feet. And it only takes 12 to 18 inches of fast moving water to carry away a vehicle, even a large SUV. Floodwater deep enough to reach the bottom of a vehicle can also cause it to stall and become stranded. Play it smart, play it safe. If you encounter floodwater: turn around— don’t drown!

f you are interested in making the world brighter for your child, a music education is the perfect gift. The following is a list of some of the proven benefits of listening to and making music: •• Music stimulates the mind, improves mood, and brings people together. Children are ready to make music earlier than you might think. •• Children who study an instrument learn about discipline, dedication and the rewards of hard work. •• Playing a musical instrument strengthens eye-hand coordination and fine motor skills. •• A study at the University of California at Irvine demonstrated that children who participated in music instruction showed dramatic enhancements in abstract reasoning skills. Researchers have found neural firing patterns suggesting

that music may hold the key to higher brain function. •• Research at McGill University in Montreal, Canada showed that elementary age students who were enrolled in music lessons scored higher for general and spatial cognitive development, the abilities that form the basis for performance in math and engineering. •• Students who make music have been shown to get along better with classmates and have fewer discipline problems. •• Just listening to music can fill a home with joy and add an extra

dimension to children’s lives. People who make music enjoy these benefits many times over. Consider the gift of music education to your child. Check out the Lincoln Music Teachers Association (LMTA) website, www.LMTA.info and click on Teacher Directory for a list of qualified teachers. LMTA welcomes teachers in all fields to join our active group.

You Will Love Lacrosse! Written by Carson Leaser, LSW student, Rampage lacross player, Lincoln Junior Rampage Youth Coach

O

ne day when I was five years old, I saw my now-favorite team, UNC, playing lacrosse on ESPNU. I quickly learned that this game was so much more than something airing on ESPN. Lacrosse is a game given to us by the Native Americans in Canada, and I’m so thankful they invented it! Lacrosse combines the speed of hockey, quick passing of soccer, and plays similar to those of basketball. The day I got my first stick, my life was forever changed. My dad could tell by my smile that this sport was going to be something special for me. I remember my first game when I tried my best but didn’t score. Then, in the second half of the last game of

that season, I finally got my first goal; it was the happiest moment of my life! Now, after scoring hundreds of goals, I am playing my freshman season on varsity. I have a true love for the sport, and I’m sure you will love it, too. Come give it a try this Fall, who knows, I could be your coach! Lincoln Jr. Rampage Fall Season runs Sundays, Sep 9-Oct 28. Our Trip to Guanajuato: A City for Families Written by Karla Goerl, Publisher, Lincoln Kids! Newsapper

T

his summer we took our first international family vacation. We’ve taken a few road trips before, nothing extravagant, but this year sang a different tune. Grandma and “Bumpa” moved to Mexico, so we saved up, bought three plane tickets, and flew south for a few weeks. Guanajuato City, nestled in the mountains of Central Mexico, is an excellent destination for traveling with kids. The city is known for it’s friendly, family-centric community that inspired parts of Disney’s Coco. We never once felt unsafe or unwelcome. Tourism for the city hasn’t hit the mainstream yet, so crowds were mostly comprised of locals when we visited in May. That was a turning point for me: all of the sights, culture, trinkets—it was all there as a part of everyday life, not just for tourism. It’s an affordable city, too. Most of our entertainment cost less than $3, if not free. Souvenirs were often handmade works of art sold directly from the artist for a few bucks. Multi-

These local artists flaunt their Coco pride! Kenny was fascinated by the colorful Catrina!

course, high-end fine dining meals cost about $20 per person, including a generous tip, and delicious street food was often under a dollar per plate! There were definitely places where you could spend a lot of money, like the modern shopping mall or one of the fine art or ceramic galleries, but we mostly enjoyed exploring and supporting the small shops, street vendors, and little grocery tiendas stocked with farm fresh produce, cheese, crema, fresh breads, and even fresher juice, and always costing way less than expected.

Every night it was almost as if the entire city joined at the city center in a celebration of life. The atmosphere filled with music, art, food, and people of all ages enjoying each other’s company and respecting one another. Local children invited our son to dance and play, and we relaxed and smiled as he jumped in eagerly. We did a lot of walking. We strolled through neighborhoods of hot pink, cerulean, and seafoam green houses, drove through the iconic winding tunnels beneath the city, and kissed on the legendary Callejon del Beso. We fed the birds, toured museums, and stood in awe as world-class chalk artists covered the sidewalks with masterpieces depicting the blending of cultures. We even toured a nearby pre-Hispanic Otomi pyramid and archaeological site, Cañada de la Virgen, excavated just 20-some years ago. We never stopped exploring, and we never grew tired of the adventure. We gained far more than we ever expected from this journey. We unearthed fragments of ourselves that were buried with parenthood, redis-

covered our desire to have more art in our lives, and grew closer and stronger as a family. Guanajuato’s culture of artistry, history, and family respect left a welcome impression on our hearts. If you want to take a big trip but aren’t sure where to go or how to plan it, check out the group tours offered by Jan & Kevin Carper below. They put together a new expedition each year, filled with bucket-list attractions and breathtaking adventures.

House Training Dogs

Pet T lk

with Allison Hunter-Frederick, Reader, Writer, Blogger, & Animal Lover AllisonTalksPets@gmail.com

H

ouse-soiling by dogs is a frequent problem. It’s one of the most common reasons dogs are surrendered to shelters. There are three things you can do to avoid this fate: potty train, address possible causes, and manage inevitable accidents. Begin house training your puppy when she’s between three and four months. Be patient. You’re teaching her to control her bladder. Training can take up to a year. Follow these steps: •• Control your puppy’s diet. Feed her several small portions throughout the day. Remove access to food between meals. •• Schedule your puppy’s potty breaks. Take her out first thing in the morning, last thing at night, and after she eats, drinks, naps, and plays. Take her outside if she cries or paces. •• If your puppy’s about to relieve herself inside, say a quick “No!” and take her outside. •• When home, take your puppy outside on a leash to the same spot each time.

Reminder! Keep your pets safe this Halloween!

•• Praise and reward your puppy for successfully relieving herself outside. Let her know she achieved a great victory. •• Never punish your puppy for relieving herself inside. She won’t understand what she’s done wrong, and she may become afraid of you. Your dog isn’t having accidents to punish you. There may be environmental or emotional stressors affecting his behavior. The following list offers possible causes and remedies: •• Submissive Urination: Does your dog pee when you come home or when he meets new people? Kneel at his level when you greet him, avoid eye contact, don’t immediately touch him on his head or ears, and try tossing a treat when he greets you. •• Excitement: Does your dog pee when excited? Kindly ignore him until he’s calm, then pet with slow, even strokes and speak in a soft, soothing voice. •• Fear: Are loud noises keeping your dog from relieving himself outside? If the sound is temporary, take him to another area or on a walk. If the noise is consistent, use distractions and

Decorations can pose a hazard. Keep watch around candles & cords.

Keep candy, especially chocolate, out of your pet’s reach. If your pet is in costume, make sure they can they move, see, hear, breathe, & communicate normally.

neath. If your dog has accidents everywhere, try putting your dog in a belly band or dog diaper. •• Clean Your Dog: Regularly clean your dog’s skin with warm soapy water and a soft cloth to prevent rashes and burns. Keeping his hair short around his bottom and tail will make clean up easier. Contact your vet if there are red or swollen areas. •• Clean Your House: A decent petodor remover may reduce the chance of your dog having recurring accidents in the same places. To find all the places he might have peed, use a black light. Your dog will always want to please you. If she’s house-soiling, she needs your help. With time and patience, your home can once again be a clean and cheerful one. If the messes are persistent and you’ve exhausted all attempts, remember to keep your veterinarian involved, and email me at allisontalkspets@ gmail.com for helpful advice and encouragement!

rewards to teach him to accept noises as a part of life. •• Changes in Routine: Have there been recent changes in your life? Allow your dog time to adjust and resume a routine as soon as possible. •• Separation Anxiety: Does your dog act distressed and relieve himself when left alone? Consult a specialist. •• Marking: Is your dog urinating on vertical surfaces? Have your dog spayed or neutered; consistent correction and obedience training may help, too. Sometimes a dog’s incontinence is untreatable. Here are some suggestions to minimize the mess: •• Protective Covers: If your dog consistently wets in the same places, try laying down plastic covers or potty pads. Place old bedding on top of the plastic covers to help your dog accept them. If your dog has accidents while it sleeps, try an elevated mesh bed with a potty pad under-

An Interview with a Red Panda By Hunter Reeves, Lincoln Children’s Zoo

What do you like to do in your free time?

O

ne of the most popular animals at Lincoln Children’s Zoo is small with red fur and most of all adorable! Of course, we are talking about red pandas. In this interview, we are going to climb through the dense bamboo forest of facts to learn about all things red panda. Over a fresh bowl of water and bamboo snacks, we sat down with our very own red panda, Tinkerbell, or Tink as she prefers, to get her insights on red pandas and our Zoo.

What is your favorite snack, gummy bears? Gummy bears? No! Typically, I love to eat bamboo. My favorite snack has to be grapes though.

Where are you from? Originally, I am from the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI) in Virginia. But I moved to the Lincoln Children’s Zoo in the Spring of 2015 to help save my species through their breeding program—and also to show off my Husker red!

Painting is one of my favorite activities. I like to use lots of colors, and my zookeeper, Davi Ann, helped me master using a paintbrush!

Where is your habitat located within the Zoo?

If your species is native to Virginia, why aren’t you called the Virginian Panda? I was only born in Virginia! Red pandas are naturally found in Asia where we live in the high forests within the Himalayas.

What are some fun enrichment items you like to play with in your habitat? I have lots of toys to play with. I love when my keepers give me a new toy— especially if it is big and I can climb all

over it! Unfortunately, I can’t ride a bike, but I like to stay active by jumping and playing with many of the toys you probably like to play with.

If you are a panda, why aren’t you black and white? I am only a distant relative to the giant panda; instead, I am more closely related to weasels, raccoons, and skunks. But personally, I think I am so much cuter. And did you know I’m actually the original panda? The giant panda was discovered after I was!

Currently, I live next to the Animal Kingdom, across from the Bobcats, Apollo and Zeus. Generally, they are good neighbors, although Apollo usually sings Moana a little too loudly before bed. Soon E.J. and I will be moving into a habitat near the new entrance of the Zoo in the expansion area. I am so excited to get a break from Apollo’s singing! Tink may be the smallest of the Zoo’s red pandas, but she definitely has the biggest personality! Please join us on August 25 for the Red Panda Run, a 1-mile fun run through the Zoo! It’s free for parents! Register by August 8 to guarantee an official Red Panda Run t-shirt. LincolnZoo.org.

Create a Meaningful Space for Art

By Tamara Kay Creative Director and Founder

Discover who you are. And the life you were created for.

I

magine a place where you encounter creativity the moment you walk in the door. The welcome is so warm and inviting that time seems to slip away, and leaving this place is the furthest thing from your mind. For now, you think you just want to drink it all in and listen to what’s stirring inside you. Perhaps you hear a voice you knew long ago when you Page 42 • LincolnKidsInc.com

were young and the world was a place full of wonder. Maybe you sense an urge to express something, but you never seem to find the time. Maybe you have something screaming inside, but no one seems to be listening. And it could be that you are still a child and colors and textures and shapes fascinate you and you love to play with them, to put them together in different ways. As people created to live abundantly, it is imperative that we find a space and time to imagine together, to be curious together, to grow together and to inspire each other. Gathering in a space that allows for the freedom of creativity to be woven into our thinking is truly important. It helps us to make meaningful connections

with each other and our world while having FUN together. A creative space is a place you go to make sense of it all. A place where it is safe to meander through sights, smells, sounds, and thoughts. It must feel like home, full of comfort, much like walking into a hug. It should be

a place to explore, but yet a place you k nowyou belong. Creating a meaningful space for art helps us all to live fuller, richer and more interesting lives. We all need time to relax, be inspired, and add texture and meaning to our days. Please accept our invitation to join us in our community art space and gather with us around the table of creativity. We love to inspire, but even more than that, we love to BE inspired. Visit our website for the latest classes, projects, and events, and then come find us, we can’t wait to welcome you. The ArtReach Project is located in Gateway Mall.
