Valentina Figueroa, 9 Valentina Figueroa is a lovely 9-year-old girl who enjoys spending time with her mom, dad, and big sister Divanys. About a year ago, she moved here from Mexico. Even though it has been a transition learning English, she says that she loves Nebraska. She also loves to watch TV, go out to eat, and take her two puppies, Rocky and Railey, to the park to play. Her favorite place to go eat with her family is Ninja Sushi restaurant. Valentina, or Vale for short, has always loved to draw and create art, and when she grows up she wants to be an artist. When asked about what inspired her to paint “Super Rose” she said, “My art teacher had us pick a flower to draw, so I picked a rose, because I wanted to try a new technique that I thought would work well with it.” Vale also loves dancing and singing and is planning on being a cheerleader in high school. Her favorite colors are black and purple.

Giving Day Raises Nearly $637,400 For Early Childhood Education Scholarships Now Available At Trusted Providers
Lincoln Community Foundation
T
he first-ever Lincoln Littles giving day, held on February 12, 2019, Abraham Lincoln’s birthday, raised $637,397. The giving day, hosted by Lincoln Community Foundation in partnership with Nebraska Children and Families Foundation, raised funds for tuition assistance, which allows more children access to quality early childhood education. The giving day and fund is a significant development toward the Prosper Lincoln Early Childhood community agenda goal of increasing accessible and affordable high-quality early childhood education. “Hats off to this generous community,” said Barbara Bartle, President of Lincoln Community Foundation. “Abe would like this birthday gift. He said, ‘When I do good, I feel good.’ Lincoln, you should feel good today. Thank you for your generous support of the little ones in our community.”
Several Lincoln-based childhood education providers have qualified to receive funding in order to provide tuition assistance for income-qualified families, including CEDARS, The Children’s Place, Community Action Head Start, Educare Lincoln, Dimensions Education Programs at First-Plymouth, Fingerprints Child Development Center, Kids First
Inc., Kids Imagination Station, KinderCare Learning Center, St. Mark’s Preschool/KIDZONE, Westminster Preschool, Willard Community Center, and World of Knowledge Child Development Center. They all are Step 2 or higher in Nebraska’s Step Up to Quality rating scale and are currently serving at least one child from an income-qual-
ified family. Additional providers may receive grants from the fund as soon as they meet the qualifications. Children eligible for Lincoln Littles tuition assistance must attend full-time and be infants, toddlers, or preschoolers. To see if your family qualifies, contact a Lincoln Littles scholarship provider directly or visit lincolnlittles.org. The second-annual Lincoln Littles giving day will once again take place on Abe’s birthday, Wednesday, February 12, 2020. Online donations may be made starting at 12:00 am on January 31 through 11:59 pm on February 12. Donations may also be made in person by cash or check on February 12 between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm at the Lincoln Community Foundation. If you would like more information on how to give to Lincoln’s Littles and help a lot, call 402-474-2345.

Candy Buy Back & Why Sugar Is Bad For Kids Nebraska Family Dentistry
F
or the sixth consecutive year, all Nebraska Family Dentistry locations will be hosting an annual candy buy back in Lincoln from November 1–8. Kids can bring their extra Halloween candy to any of our offices and earn $0.50 per lb.
Why Do We Want To Buy Candy? Candy has a high amount of sugar, which can lead to cavities in kids. According to the latest research, sugar does more than just cause cavities.
How Much Sugar Is Too Much Sugar? According to a study by the American Heart Association (AHA), children as young as one to three years old already consume about 12 teaspoons of sugar per day. Older children consume even more due to hidden sugar in their diets. This is too much sugar. AHA recommends children ages 2-18 consume less than
six teaspoons of added sugar per day and none for children under two.
Why Is Sugar Bad? Simple sugar is pro-inflammatory and responsible for obvious problems, such as cavities. Sugar may also be responsible for more— research is showing some childhood allergies, asthma, eczema, behavioral issues, metabolic syndromes, diabetes, and much, much more have one underlying cause: inflammation caused by high intake of sugar.
What Is Inflammation In Kids? Inflammation in kids itself isn’t a bad thing. It’s a natural way for bodies to respond to stress or foreign particles. The problem is when it becomes chronic, and health and immune systems become affected. There is a strong connection between a kid’s high-sugar diet, their digestive system, and inflammation, all pointing to this important fact: a sugar-filled diet may lead to multiple health problems, ranging from
Changing Dentistry Changing
lives
eczema to behavioral problems to frequent colds and more. Dental decay is the most common childhood disease in the US. We know the health of the mouth can tell us a lot about a person’s overall wellness. At Nebraska Family Dentistry, we care about the well-being of kids. We want to help kids improve their overall wellness by helping them improve their dental health. Can caregivers minimize the risks of candy on dental and overall health? Yes, of course. Check out these four sweet tips on surviving candy overload: •• Choosing. Talk to your child about choosing the right candy. Hard, sticky candy that sits in the mouth for a while makes teeth prone to cavities. Instead, choose things like chocolate that dissolve quickly. •• Planning. Devise a plan that both you and your child have agreed upon to get rid of extra holiday candy. Let your children know that they can earn money by bringing in excess Halloween candy to one of Nebraska Family Dentistry’s five Lincoln locations during the first week in November—we pay $0.50 per pound! •• Timing. Teach your children that snacking on candy all day isn’t healthy. It’s better to pick a time to eat it. Eating candy around a meal high in protein is ideal as it increases saliva production. If that isn’t an option, eating candy any time is okay, just rinse with water or chew sugar-free gum after. •• Scheduling. We all know it’s good practice to see the dentist. Get your child scheduled for their check-up. Check-ups should occur every six months. Make sure your children
brush their teeth two times per day for two minutes, floss, and rinse with a fluoride mouth rinse.

Ask a community center if they’ll accept candy donations for treats & snacks—some host birthday celebrations for children. Contact a nonprofit counselor or therapist who’s willing to use it in a treat bowl for their patients. Enter your zip code at soldiersangels.org to see if a local business is accepting candy donations for Treats for Troops, or you can ship them directly to the organization, which will disperse it to US troops stationed around the world. You can also save the excess candy to incorporate into baked goods for the upcoming holidays (check Pinterest for an endless stream of ideas). If all else fails, you can always throw away the candy that’s been cast aside. Although it may be wasteful, I think a healthy diet is more important. –LK

Help Your Family Stay Active & Healthy Over The Holidays Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln (PHL)
O
ne common result of the winter holidays is often physical inactivity with overeating. If we eat until we nearly burst and then watch sports instead of play them, the two can combine to make winter the season of added pounds and fitness loss.
Nobody wants to play Scrooge during the holidays by telling families not to enjoy their holiday meals or TV sports. But consider this: the childhood obesity rate has nearly quadrupled since the 1970s, and one in four American adults is clinically obese. With this rise in obesity is an alarming corresponding increase in obesity-related chronic diseases, including diabetes, hypertension,
and heart disease—even in children! Enjoying healthy holidays does not have to mean taking the fun or taste out of them. Parents can play an important role in helping to keep their extended families healthy over the holidays—and year-round—with some healthy holiday tips: Be active, focus on fun, not food. When the family gets together over the holidays, hosts can make a difference by being prepared with active fun everyone can enjoy. Plan a family ice skate, build a snow fort, or take a winter wonderland walk outside. Inside, play charades, get out the board games, Wii Sports, or turn on some music and show the kids the dance steps from your youth.
Help family and guests avoid mindless holiday eating. The host
in us wants to set a sweet treat on every horizontal surface when family comes over for the holidays. The trouble is, people tend to pick up a treat every time they pass by one. Instead of candy and cookies in every dish, set out a plate of fresh fruit with yogurt dip, bowls of peanuts in the shells, or trays of fresh veggies.
Stock the freezer with healthy meals. The holidays are a busy time, and it’s easy to opt for fast food. Stock the freezer with healthy meals to avoid the temptation to drive through somewhere. If you’re cooking or assigning dishes to family members, add a variety of vegetables to the menu so that the majority of leftovers are not desserts, cheesy casseroles, and candied yams. Offer sauces on the side or spoon lightly on portions.
Choose beverages wisely. It’s tempting for adults and kids alike to grab a sugary drink every time thirst hits during the holidays. But think twice about the sodas and other sugary beverages—they can have up to 200 or more calories in each container. To burn off the calories from drinking a 20-ounce regular soda, a 150-pound adult has to walk about three miles, and a 75-pound child has to walk over 5 miles, which might be more challenging to do during the cold winter months. Remember these tips and your family will not only enjoy the winter holidays, but may be healthier once they’re over. Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln (PHL) is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the health, wellness, and fitness of our community. We collaborate with other organizations on joint projects to improve health by increasing physical fitness, promoting healthy weights and good nutrition, supporting breastfeeding, improving vaccination and cancer screening rates, chronic disease management, and patient outreach.

Just For Women: Care That Delivers CHI Health
I
t’s a fact of life: women go to the doctor more frequently than men. One study found women were 33 percent more likely than men to visit a doctor, even excluding pregnancy-related visits, and 100 percent more likely than men to seek preventive services1. It’s also a statistical fact: females live longer than males. Throughout their lives, women take charge of their own health and make the majority of health care decisions for children, spouses, and aging parents. Sometimes, squeezing health care into their hectic lives can be challenging. CHI Health is responding to the unique needs of women with a full suite of experts, services, and facilities to deliver the latest in care, along with convenience.
Women’s Health 70th & A The Physician Network, a division of CHI Health, opened a new Women’s Health clinic offering services for every stage of a woman’s life—from before family planning to mid-life care and beyond. “It’s important for females to have specialized care at any point in their life, from adolescence to older age,” said Tara Baum, MD, OB/ GYN specialist. Dr. Baum and OB/GYN specialist Kate Klayum, DO, are proud to share their passion for caring for women at the comprehensive clinic. “It’s everything women need—clinical care, primary care, surgery, and, of course, delivering babies,” said Dr. Klayum.
Whether it’s for a same-day appointment or diagnostic service, a friendly team is dedicated to providing a path to wellness for women.
The Cottonwood Birthing Suite at CHI Health Birth Center
CHI Health Birth Center 80th & O As Lincoln’s first freestanding birth center, CHI Health Birth Center answers a previously unmet need with the midwifery model of care—a holistic approach for women who desire a more natural and personal approach to the birthing process. Formerly known as the Good Life Birth Place, CHI Health Birth Center is staffed by certified nurse midwives who deliver care with a personal touch. “This environment is intended to be different. Quiet and homelike,” said Karen McGivney-Liechti, a certified nurse midwife at the center. It’s not solely for birthing. Women can get Pap smears, breast exams, and advice on mid-life care. “Midwife literally means ‘with women,’” McGivney-Liechti said. “We journey with women for a lifetime.”

Exploring The 4th Floor Of Morrill Hall: Cherish Nebraska University of Nebraska State Museum– Morrill Hall
A
ll is still as Barbourofelis crouches, his saber-like teeth gleaming in the light, waiting to ambush his prey. The enormous Bison Latifrons stands majestically nearby. Listen closely, and you’ll hear birds and water. This scene greets guests as they first enter Cherish Nebraska at the University of Nebraska State Museum-Morrill Hall. The recently-opened exhibit tells the story of Nebraska’s past and present through displays, interactives, and digital media. Nine new galleries encompass the entire fourth floor of Morrill Hall. Start with a trip through Nebraska’s past in Landscapes Through Time. See what the area was like when elephants, camels, and prehistoric cats like Barbourofelis roamed the grasslands. View portions of a vertebrate fossil collection that is second in size only to the American Museum of Natural History. Enter Nebraska Modern
Landscapes to navigate our state’s major ecological regions and water systems. Play in the virtual watershed table and marvel at the complexities that make up our current landscapes. Children can crawl through our replica rattlesnake den and cottonwood log. The digital projection globe in Sustainable Earth examines the effects of human activity on our planet. A 5-foot diameter sphere operates like an inside out planetarium with a projector inside. Three continually rotating programs discuss climate, the Ice Ages, and biodiversity. Those who enter Transforming Prairies will learn the story of humans on the prairie from Paleoindians to modern Nebraskans. Try your hand at making the ancient atlatl weapon and hunt and gather food for your family. In the Science Exploration Zone, you become the researcher. Open drawers and pull out artifacts and fossils to examine under microscopes. Or visit with our experts as they conduct actual research in the Visible Lab. Each of our Museum divisions

Local Books Make Great Gifts! Handersen Publishing
B
ooks are the perfect gift for the holidays! Many families even celebrate with a “Christmas Book Countdown.” Here at Handersen Publishing, we think that local books by local authors make even better presents. Check out a few of our titles:
Everybody’s Baby Nebraska native and local artist Karissa Bettendorf has a new book out! Everybody’s Baby is the heart-warming tale of a forest full of animals watching over a sleepy baby who is loved by everyone. Everybody’s Baby is Karissa’s second book published by Lincolnbased Handersen Publishing. Her first book, Dreams, 2018, is also available. The book launch for Everybody’s Baby will be at Francie & Finch bookstore (13th and O Street) on December 11th at 6 pm. Hope to see you there!
Felice the Christmas Fairy Oh no! Felice has fallen off the Christmas tree! With some help from the other ornaments, she must make it back to the top before Santa arrives. With incredible illustrations by UK artist Anja Uhren and Irene Mathias’ clever storytelling, Felice the Christmas Fairy is sure to be a new Christmas classic!
Sharky Dreams of Pizza Yes, we’ve all heard the “Baby Shark” song a million times...ba-by shark doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo! But what about a shark that dreams of eating pizza? Meet Sharky, a friendly shark who dreams of nothing but pizza. One day he meets a boy who can help him, and the two become fast friends. Nebraska duo Nichole and Tevin Hansen bring you the humorous tale of friendship and pizza, Sharky Dreams of Pizza.
Christmas Book Countdown What is a Christmas Book Countdown? This tradition is snowballing in popularity. You might have seen a few social media posts about it during the holidays last year, showing a colorful stack of wrapped books under the tree. Children love unwrapping gifts, and this lets them unwrap one book each day leading up to Christmas. It’s a great way to encourage daily reading and instill excitement about books, especially while school is out and educational activities are on a slide. Families often choose to start the countdown 25, 24, or 12 days before Christmas. A lot of families purchase only a few books to add to their home’s permanent collection. The rest are borrowed from the library and returned after the holidays, which helps keep this an affordable, educational, and kid-favorite tradition. –LK
How Rudy the Rooster Got His Voice Dr. Gina Bittner and Dr. Kelly Kingsley, both professors of education at Peru State College in Nebraska, have teamed up to bring you How Rudy the Rooster Got His Voice. Join Rudy as he wanders the farm in search of his—baaawk-adoodle-doo!!—own voice. With a little help from the other farm animals, Rudy will soon discover exactly who he needs to sound like—himself. All of these books and others published by Handersen Publishing are available on Amazon.com, at Francie & Finch bookstore, and at handersenpublishing.com ($11.99 for paperback or $17.99 for hardback).

Books To Grow With A Selection Of Children’s Library Books For Families To Read Together by Lincoln City Libraries
H
i, my name is Karrie, and I’m the Youth Librarian at Anderson and Bethany libraries. One of my favorite things about my job is reading aloud to kids and seeing a book resonate with a child. In this edition of Books to Grow with, I wanted to tell you about our new FUNdamental collection. This small but mighty collection includes 50 high-quality concept books for ages 0-5. Concepts range from things like colors, numbers, and shapes to feelings and rhymes. You can find a FUNdamental display at each of our Lincoln City Library locations. Here are just a few of my favorites: Ten Black Dots by Donald Crews Practice counting to ten with short rhyming text. Each page features a bright, familiar image that contains a number of black dots. Eight dots make the wheels of a train, carrying freight through sun and rain. Touch each dot to help your little one count. And then look at the world around you, what can you count with ten black dots? LMNO Peas by Keith Baker Children young and old will love hearing all about what these peas are up to, from Astronaut peas to Zoologist peas! The letters are large enough to practice tracing with your finger, and the pictures hold many hidden gems, bringing you back again and again!
Duck on a Bike by David Shannon This is my absolute favorite read-aloud at Preschool Storytime. It features lots of animal noises, a fun look around a farm, and an ornery duck. What more could you want? Giraffes Can’t Dance by Giles Andrea Gerald the giraffe is tall, skinny, awkward and clumsy. Every year when the annual Jungle Dance comes around, Gerald feels sad that he can’t participate. This is a perfect self-esteem book, reminding kids that just because they’re not like everybody else doesn’t mean they’re not perfect just the way they are.
Specially-trained children’s stylists All the latest styles for your family Fun play area & video games Adult haircuts & facial waxing, too! Specializing in squirmers!

Mirrors And Windows Lincoln City Libraries
T
he concept of a curriculum for children serving as mirrors and windows was initially introduced by Emily Style in an essay titled, Listening to all Voices, in 1988. This metaphor represents a child’s need to see and recognize themselves and their social milieu in school curriculum and books, as well as offering them a window into the lives and cultures of others. The call for more diversity in children’s literature has risen from a murmur in the 1960s and 1970s, to a roar in the 2000s. In 2013, the New York Times published an article, “Where Are the People of Color in Children’s Books?” They cited the revealing statistic that of 3,200 children’s books published that year, there were only 93 about African American people. In June of 2013, multicultural publisher Lee and Low Books created a graphic illustrating that, although 37% of the US population is people of color, only 10% of children’s books published con-

tained multicultural content. This gap remained steady from 1994-2013. In 2014, the hashtag #WeNeedDiverseBooks was created in frustration by Ellen Oh and Malinda Lo in response to the allwhite, all-male panel of children’s authors assembled for a BookCon reader event. Out of this grew We Need Diverse Books, a non-profit and grassroots organization of children’s book lovers that advocates for essential changes in the publishing industry. They aim to help produce and promote literature that reflects and honors the lives of all young people. And by this, they mean ALL young
people. Their motto is, “We recognize all diverse experiences, including (but not limited to) LGBTQIA, Native, people of color, gender diversity, people with disabilities, and ethnic, cultural, and religious minorities.” It’s easy to see why young people need books that reflect their reality, mirrors of sorts that contain characters that look like them, their family, and community. These stories resonate with shared experiences, whether that child uses a wheelchair or lives in a home where Spanish is the family language. Many people speak of the relief they felt when they discovered a kindred spirit between the pages of
a book—a powerful antidote to the isolation those who feel “different” from the mainstream can experience. Just as powerful is the experience of meeting people unlike oneself in a work of fiction or non-fiction. Books such as these open windows into the larger world, the multiplicity of experiences, points of view, and frames of reference. When we see the world from another person’s point of view, we can move from understanding to empathy and, in the process, come to appreciate our shared humanity. Children’s book publishers have heard the message and librarians, booksellers, parents, and children have reaped the benefit. Our new displays are much more welcoming, interesting, and diverse than ever before. Having a voice and telling your story is essential to feeling represented. We are all better when we expand our tables to welcome diversity and invite in those who have stood on the sidelines for too long. Find out more about this terrific organization, their resources, and booklists by visiting diversebooks.org.

tructured literacy is the umbrella term adopted by the International Dyslexia Association to unify and encompass evidence-based programs and strategies that are aligned to the Knowledge and Practice Standards (KPS; Cowen, 2016). There is substantial evidence that the effectiveness of structured literacy benefits all students, but is vital for those with dyslexia. Some of the more common literacy practices typical in many schools, such as guided reading or balanced literacy, are not proven effective reading instruction for up to 15-20% of the population.
Structured Literacy •• Is designed for remediation •• Is supported by evidence-based, scientific research that helps children and adults with dyslexia and other reading difficulties learn to read and spell •• Teaches students to decode words; break words into phonemes in order to read them •• Teaches students to encode words—break down words orally into syllables and phonemes in order to spell them •• Is individualized; students progress at a pace allowing them to develop fluency and automaticity at the word level •• Provides diagnostic and prescriptive; instructors monitor skill development with each step, and lessons are built upon observations in previous lessons •• Includes continuous feedback and positive reinforcement •• Develops metacognition: being aware of what and why they are learning, and how to apply newly taught skills •• Provides simultaneous multi-sensory instruction: visual pathway; auditory pathway; kinesthetic/tactile pathway
6 Key Elements of Structured Literacy There are six key elements of structured literacy instruction. They include instruction that is highly explicit and systematic, addressing all necessary components of literacy.
•• Phonology. The study of sound structure of spoken words. •• Sound-Symbol Association. The ability to map phonemes (sounds) to symbols (letters), both in visual to auditory (reading), and auditory to visual (spelling). •• Syllable Instruction. A syllable is a word or part of a word with one vowel sound. Students are taught the six basic syllable types: closed, vCe, open, consonant-le, r-controlled, and vowel pair. Syllable division is a key component for both decoding and encoding. •• Morphology. A morpheme is the smallest unit of meaning in the language. •• Syntax. The system for ordering words in sentences so that meaning is communicated and understood. •• Semantics. The aspect of language concerned with meaning. Structured literacy follows a scope and sequence which dictates the order in which concepts and content are taught. Sequential instruction follows a logical and developmental progression moving from simple to complex. Systematic instruction is highly organized and delivered with logical procedures and routines regularly to build automaticity. Explicit instruction is when concepts are explained directly and thoroughly and modeled by the instructor to ensure the purpose is clearly defined. There is no single approach we consider right or wrong. However, evidence strongly suggests that Structured Literacy instruction prevents reading failure when students are identified in their early years. The Nebraska Dyslexia Association is a non-profit organization providing information and support to parents and the public on reading problems as well as striving to improve educational opportunities for students with reading, writing, and spelling deficits. For more information, contact the NDA: www.nebraskadyslexia.org or 402434-6434.

The 35th Season Of The Nutcracker Promises To Be Magical Lincoln Midwest Ballet Company
T
his is Lincoln Midwest Ballet Company’s 35th season performing The Nutcracker with professional guest artists, dazzling costumes, and a live orchestra. Our founder and artistic director, Shari True, has created a production that the Lincoln community has come to cherish. LMBC is the only youth ballet company in the Midwest that performs accompanied by a live orchestra. While the majority of the people who attend The Nutcracker are from the Lincoln area, in the past three years, audience members have traveled from 31 states and Ontario, Canada, to enjoy the holiday magic of this show. This year’s performances are held on Saturday, December 14, at 2 pm and 7 pm, and Sunday, December 15, at 2 pm at the Lied Center for Performing Arts. Tickets are now on sale. Some things to watch for this year are new costumes that Head Costumer, Maralee Maldavs, has created for the Jester Doll, the Columbine Doll, and the Harlequin

Dolls. The costumes she is replacing were some of the oldest in the production. Maldavs said she decided to give them a whole new look “with a new color scheme that will bring a beautiful new feel to the party scene—we are excited to reveal them this year!” At the Saturday night performance, twin girls Chloe and Gracie O’Brien will be gliding across the stage as Angels in Act II. Mother Ginger, Jessica Broadfoot, will be hiding a few more Bon Bons under her enormous skirt this year,
all ready to delight the audience with their tumbling skills! Auditions were held in September, and 173 local students were cast in the show. Featured student soloists include: Emma Luci, a junior at Lincoln East, dancing as Clara; Grace Herron, a senior at Lincoln East, dancing as Snow Queen and Arabian Queen; and Meg Workman, from Omaha, dancing as Dew Drop and Jester. Other graduating seniors performing this year include Anneliese Hinrichsen from Lincoln Southwest,
and Abby Collier, Rose Copes, and Rylee Tucker from Lincoln East. The professional guest artists include Camila Ferrera and Chris Lingner, from Indianapolis Ballet, performing as the Sugar Plum Fairy and Cavalier, and Glenn Kelich, also from Indianapolis Ballet, performing as the Nutcracker Prince. The annual production of The Nutcracker is a Lincoln holiday tradition that many in the community deeply cherish. Leslie Tien has the Tchaikovsky score memorized. She has played the cello in the orchestra every year since 1984. When asked to share her fondest memory, she said, “My best memories are of my daughter coming to see the ballet, starting when she was about five. She’d dress up in her fancy Christmas dresses and spin around like a ballerina. She’s 23 now...and has never missed a year.” The 35th performance of The Nutcracker promises to be magical for the musicians in the orchestra pit, the dancers and gymnasts on stage, and the audience members who attend the show!

ith the fall season in high gear, many birds have migrated south to find food. But Nebraska has a lot of resident birds that stay here yearround, like woodpeckers, nuthatches, and chickadees. Winter is an excellent time to watch birds. As the weather gets colder and wetter, a great way to watch them is by having a seed or suet feeder. This extra food will help the birds keep on fat to stay warm through the winter months. Also, native berry and nut trees can help feed Blue Jays, Robins, and more. The winter season also has fun family community science events to participate in, including the Christmas Bird Count,
Project FeederWatch, and the Great Backyard Bird Count! So bundle up and enjoy the cooler weather and winter birds in your backyard.

Turkey Vultures – Nature’s Cleanup Crew Pioneers Park Nature Center
I
f you live in or around Lincoln, you have likely seen a few turkey vultures flying around. They are common to Lincoln and North America, and you may even know of a roost in your neighborhood. Turkey Vultures are unique and interesting animals with an important role in the animal kingdom—they are scavengers, eating carrion (decaying animals). While that does not sound appetizing to us, turkey vultures can be thought of as nature’s clean-up crew, taking care of otherwise stinky messes. They also likely have excellent immune systems, which allows them to feast on carcasses without getting sick. A few distinguishing characteristics can help you identify these vultures from hawks and eagles. Vultures are easily spotted as a large bird, with a wingspan of almost six feet. In flight, turkey vultures tend to have slow wing beats, meaning they do not flap their wings very often. Instead, they glide through air ther-

mals. Since a turkey vulture does not hunt live animals, they do not need to be fast or stealthy and can be a “lazy” flier. Their preference to glide and soar instead of steadily flapping also makes them appear to be wobbly fliers. When watching these birds in the sky, look for their finger-like feathers stretching out at the end of their wings. Another clue to help ID the vulture when soaring is that their wings spread out in the shape of a
‘V.’ Their silhouette will look black, however, their feathers are brown and black. If you see a turkey vulture up close, you will also notice that they do not have many feathers on their head and that their head is red. The baldness is thought to be an adaptation to prevent their not-so-clean meals from sticking to their head. Up close, you will also notice their large nostrils. Turkey vultures have
a great sense of smell, allowing them to find food located miles away. Even compared to their relative, the black vulture, a turkey vulture has a superior sense of smell. The scientific name for the turkey vulture is Cathartes aura. Turkey vultures are in the Cathartidae family, along with black vultures and condors. Cathartidae comes from katharsis, meaning to clean or purify. The next time you see a turkey vulture flying overhead, appreciate the bird for its effort to help keep nature clean. The Pioneers Park Nature Center is open Monday through Saturday, 8:30 am–5 pm, and Sunday, noon– 5 pm, except on Christmas and New Year’s Day. More Experiences Leads To A Love Of Nature Lindsay Rogers, Nebraska Game & Parks Commission
W
hen my daughter was young, she was often apprehensive about doing things on her own. She was reluctant to go outside by herself. She insisted we go with her on every ride at the amusement park. And she would never go to the basement alone. Although it seemed she was often attached to my leg, I knew what she needed was experiences. It is through experiences that we gain confidence. As an adult, I know the concept that experiences lead to confidence. The first time I had to present to a large audience, I was nervous. Now, hundreds of presentations later, I thrive on public speaking. When I first became a parent, I was terrified. Eleven years later, I am confident in my abilities (and confident that my mistakes do not make me a bad parent). I know these things because I have experience. The same concept is true when we head out into nature. I often hear
people say things like, “I can’t go fishing, I’ve never been before.” Or, “I don’t know how to go camping. The last time I camped, my parents did everything.” And then there is, “I can’t identify birds, I don’t even know the difference between an eagle and a hawk!” But here’s the deal—the first time you tried to walk, you had never done that either. The first time you tried to ride a bike, it was likely a dismal failure. And, the first time you saw a giant heron flying over-
head, you didn’t care that you didn’t know what it was. We only begin to feel comfortable and confident in doing things when we do them over and over, sometimes failure after failure. We become more knowledgeable after making errors. We truly learn from our mistakes. So stop making excuses and start making mistakes. Head outside to go bird watching and misidentify a swallow; you’ll eventually learn that it is not a sparrow. Take time this weekend to go to a local park
and explore the plants. Which plants have long, skinny leaves? Which plants have wide, broad leaves? No need to worry about correctly identifying them, that will come with time. Venture to an area state park to try fishing. Through experience, you’ll learn how to cast the lure and reel it in. Even if you don’t catch anything, you’ll have fun trying! As you and your child explore nature, you’ll be gaining experiences. As you look for shapes in the clouds, you’ll gain creativity. As you wait daily for a bird egg to hatch, you’ll gain patience. As you watch a squirrel search for its hidden seeds in the cold of winter, you’ll gain empathy for living things. As you explore tiny tracks in the snow, you’ll learn observation skills. In time, these skills will lead to a wealth of knowledge that is useful for not only exploring and appreciating nature, but also for your everyday life. Nature has a lot to teach us. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Instead, focus on making memories.

Winter Pet Safety Tips Capital Humane Society
T
he holidays during the winter season remind us to be thankful. At Capital Humane Society, we are always thankful for responsible pet owners who provide proper care to their animals. Protecting pets from cold weather and holiday hazards is important. Many accidents we see are preventable. The tips below can help you to avoid pet emergencies, expenses, and worry. •• Keep pets away from areas where antifreeze is used or stored, and be sure to wipe up any spills immediately. Antifreeze has a sweet taste many animals find attractive and can be fatal to your pet even if only small amounts are ingested. •• Consider using pet-safe products for deicing on your property and embittered antifreeze in your car. •• After walking your pet outdoors, take the time to wipe off their paws and underbelly after returning so that no chemicals are ingested. •• Pets need to wear identification tags in case they slip out of the
house or yard. They don’t want to be roaming around lost in freezing temperatures. Microchipping is also an important form of identification, and greatly increases the odds that lost pets will be reunited with their families. •• Pets will be most comfortable indoors where it is warm. •• Heat lamps and space heaters need to be used with caution to prevent burns and fires. •• Animals may crawl under the hood of your car to find warmth on an engine. Knock on the hood of your car or honk the horn to alert an animal to leave and avoid injury. •• Do not leave pets in the car. Temperatures can drop dramatically and your pet can freeze. •• Time outdoors during extreme cold should be limited to avoid frostbite and hypothermia. Your dog may benefit from wearing cold weather attire such as a coat or boots when on a walk. •• If your pet must be outdoors, they need a safe shelter with dry bedding that is off the ground. Straw can
provide good insulation. Be sure there are no drafts in their structure. It is very important your pet has access to water that it is not frozen. •• The holidays are filled with food and treats, several of which pose a danger to your pets, like chocolate. Keep dangerous food out of your pet’s reach, and let your guests know not to feed them table food or plate scraps. •• Holiday decorations can be hazardous as well, such as light strings,
cords, tinsel, glass ornaments, and handmade food-based decor. Keep these items out of reach. Some festive plants are toxic as well. Contact your veterinarian if you have questions or concerns about your pet’s health. Quick action can save lives. Please take the time to make safe decisions and be proactive. All your friends at Capital Humane Society wish you and your pets safe & happy holiday celebrations.

Editor’s Note: Reading this article brought back many memories of touring cathedrals while on family road trips. I still pop into churches to view the architecture and stained glass whenever I travel, but somehow haven’t done this in my own city yet. Thank you, Gretchen, for the inspiration! Gretchen’s activities reminded me of my childhood. My mother would help me, my sisters, and our neighborhood friends make puff-paint stained glass and melted wax suncatchers. The wax suncatchers were my favorite. Grate crayons with a cheese grater, sprinkle some shreds between two pieces of wax paper, and iron on low until the wax melts. Once it’s cool, cut out a design, like a heart or star, and hang it in the window. This project requires some adult assistance with the use of a grater and hot iron, but makes a nice opportunity to teach safety with these domestic tools. For puff paint stained glass, take black puff paint and outline a design. Then, once it dries, paint the sections with watercolor or India ink. –LK

Vegas, Baby! Karla Goerl, Lincoln Kids! Newspaper
T
hink Vegas is only for adults? Think again! Last year we took our two-year-old to Vegas over the holidays and had ourselves a wholesome blast. If you don’t have Las Vegas on your family vacation wish list, you might want to pencil it in, because as it turns out, Vegas is a city bursting with family fun.
dle through MGM Resorts online. Here is our ultimate list of things to see and do with kids in Vegas.
Bellagio Conservatory
Walking a skywalk
We booked direct flights out of Central Regional Airport in Grand Island. Eppley Airfield in Omaha also offers direct flights, so getting to Vegas is a snap. We packed the essentials in our carry-ons and only checked a pack-n-play (checking it cost less than renting one from the hotel for the week). Our flights were short and sweet and didn’t cause any interruptions to meals or naps. Getting around Vegas is fun in itself. We always try to experience as much public transportation as we can while we travel—it’s cheap thrills and good experience. In Vegas, we recommend grabbing seats on the Deuce, a double-decker bus that runs up & down the Strip, The Monorail, which makes seven stops along the Strip (we saved with multi-day passes; children 5 & under are free), and the free trams that connect a handful of casino resorts. My #1 piece of advice when visiting Vegas is to bring good walking shoes. Even with all the ride options, you will still do a lot of walking. What you do in Vegas may determine where you stay, and vice-versa! Before traveling, I did a bit of research and made a bucket list based on cost and age-appropriateness (I know attractions add up fast, and thankfully there are plenty of free kid-friendly sites). We also saved money by pre-purchasing a three-admission entertainment bun-
Bellagio: This is my favorite place in Vegas. The massive Conservatory & Botanical Gardens is a stunning display of floral art that changes seasonally, with animated elements, sculptures, and incredible photo opportunities. Touring it is free! While inside the Bellagio, we also suggest viewing the huge chocolate fountain at the Patisserie. Outside is the world- famous Fountains of Bellagio, the massive, choreographed & illuminated fountain show. This free, spectacular show runs daily every 30 minutes in the afternoon and every 15 minutes at night. Caesars Palace: Walk the glitzy Forum Shops and take in the fantastic indoor-outdoor atmosphere, sculptures, giant exotic fish aquarium, and hourly animatronic show, Fall of Caesar, all free (aside from whatever shopping & dining you do). Circus Circus: People of all ages are sure to enjoy the Adventuredome theme park, carnival midway, & free circus performances that happen every half hour. Excalibur: We loved the Fun Dungeon arcade. The Excalibur also features the Tournament of Kings live dinner show and a 4-D movie theatre. Flamingo: Another awesome and free thing kids are sure to enjoy is a stroll through the Flamingo Wildlife Habitat to see exotic plants, flamingos, pelicans, turtles, and more. Mandalay Bay: The Shark Reef Aquarium is hands-down one of our fave ticketed attractions. There’s a jungle temple with animals, a ray experience, aquarium tunnel, and a shipwreck. There is also a new Polar Journey exhibit that we plan to see next time. We also really enjoyed the free tram ride that took us from the
Excalibur to Mandalay Bay. Mirage: Outside is a huge fire & water show with two volcanoes, a lagoon, and fire shooters. Mirage is also home to Siegfried & Roy’s Secret Garden with tigers, lions, leopards, and the beautiful Dolphin Habitat. We appreciate that admission is an all-day pass so we could come and go. The Linq: walk the Linq Promenade to grab a bite, witness street artists, snap photos, and see zipliners above. You can also purchase tickets to the High Roller Observation Wheel, which takes you on a fascinating trip above the skyline for amazing views and photo ops. The Venetian: We could spend an entire day touring this hotel, from the coffered ceilings with oil replicas to the Grand Canal Shoppes and St. Mark’s Square. Touring the Venetian is free and I suggest taking time to do so. It is impeccably designed to make you believe you are outdoors in the streets of Venice. You can even purchase a serenaded gondola ride. Other kid-friendly sites include the Ethel M. Botanical Garden &
Indoors at The Venetian
Chocolatier (free tours & samples!), snapping a free photo with the the iconic Fabulous Las Vegas sign, shopping at the Downtown Container Park and letting the kids play in its huge free Tree House & Play Zone, and the Fremont Street Experience (a bit risqué, we recommend daytime if you take the kids). Las Vegas truly is fabulous and offers experiences for all ages that you simply can’t get elsewhere. It’s a quick, easy, and exhilarating destination and we can’t wait to go back. Visit www.VisitLasVegas.com to begin planning your trip!
