Isaac Cooper ello. My name is Isaac. I am 10 years old and in the 4th grade. My mom homeschools me along with my H brother and sister. My brother is 9 and my sister is 7. We have a

dog named Wrigley, she is the cutest. My favorite hobby is playing the guitar. I have been playing for about two years now, and my teacher is really fun. I also enjoy drawing. Last semester I took an art class with Mrs. Lisa Cassel and during one class she taught everyone how to draw animals that you would find in Africa. I really enjoyed that class. I love to play video games and climb trees with my brother and sister. I also enjoy reading, playing Legos, and playing Pokemon with my brother and friends. During the year I play sports. I play basketball, football, and baseball. Baseball is my favorite. I am really good at catcher. When I grow up, I think I want to be a teacher or a doctor. I think if I am either a teacher or a doctor, I would really make a difference in the world. Or a professional baseball player. That would be fun.

5 Reasons To Visit Your Family Chiropractor Thrive Family Chiropractic & Acupuncture

T It’s never too early A SMALL ADJUSTMENT NOW CAN MAKE A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE IN A CHILD’S LIFE.

Signs & Symptoms in Children • ADHD • Allergies • Anxiety • Asthma • Autism • Bed Wetting • Behavioral Issues • Colic • Constipation • Ear Infections • Eczema • Frequent Colds

• Growing Pains • Motor and Speech Delays • Nursing Difficulties • Plagiocephaly • Reflux • Seizures • Sensory Disorders • Sinus & Respiratory infections • Sleep Issues • Torticollis

hrive Family Chiropractic & Acupuncture, founded by Dr. Brittney Keller in 2016, is a warm, welcoming, family-friendly place complete with fresh fruit, a coffee bar, children’s play area, and a comfortable nursing room with a changing table. On a typical day, you’ll see smiling faces, friends catching up, kids coloring and playing, and babies giggling. The space is filled with love, laughter, and healing.

Not Your Average Chiropractor When most people hear “chiropractor,” they probably think, “back pain.” The truth is, by the time you have pain, you have a problem that’s been there for a while, negatively affecting your health for far longer than you’ve felt the pain. So, what’s the problem? It’s what chiropractors refer to as “subluxation,” or misalignment within the spine that creates stress and interference in the nervous system. This causes an imbalance in the Central Nervous System between the Sympathetic (“fight or flight”) and Parasympathetic (“rest and digest”) functions. When this happens, we see issues with things like fertility, pregnancy challenges, difficult birth, colicky babies, and childhood struggles. What causes the problem? Stress. Stress can fall into three main categories: physical, chemical, and emotional. Cleaning up your family’s diet, reducing household chemicals, and doing things to relax and nurture your creative side can help reduce stress,

but it is impossible to eliminate it all. This is where chiropractic comes in.

Five Pivotal Stages In Life To See A Chiropractor 1. Preconception. If you’re planning to conceive in the next year or so, the time to prepare your body is now. Your health habits and the amount of stress your body is under now sets the stage for the health of your pregnancy and baby. If you’re having trouble getting pregnant, it may be because of these stressors on your nervous system. Chiropractic care can help to restore health, balance, and fertility. 2. Pregnancy. Chiropractic care during pregnancy can ease the discomforts of pregnancy, benefit labor & delivery, and prepare a healthy start for baby. As baby is growing in your belly, big changes are happening to your body every day. If your pelvis is out of alignment, it causes undue stress on the uterus and involved nerves, muscles, and ligaments. This makes it difficult for baby to get into the ideal position for birth and for labor to progress like it’s supposed to. Chiropractic care can help align and balance the pelvis, promoting opportunity for a natural birth, which in turn can provide baby with healthy immune and nervous system function, and can even foster a calmer and more content newborn.

“Chiropractic” from page 6 3. Infancy. Childbirth, especially if there were any interventions used, is often the biggest stress most of our spines have faced. The sooner we correct subluxations stemming from birth, the less impact they will have on baby’s health. Chiropractic care has been shown to help babies with torticollis, plagiocephaly, ear infections, colic, reflux, sleep troubles, nursing difficulties and more! 4. Childhood. So many children today struggle with conditions like allergies, asthma, ADHD, and anxiety. Chiropractic adjustments can help calm the neuro storm to help children stay coordinated, regulated, and focused. 5. Parenthood. Let’s be honest, parenthood is no walk in the park. When our child struggles, we struggle. We need to remember that when we take care of ourselves first, we can take better care of our family. Our habits, actions, and health are setting an example for our children. Many of us manage

stressors outside of parenthood as well. Regular chiropractic care can help you stay balanced. If you’ve been to more than one chiropractor, you know we’re not all the same. Some see more injuries, while others specialize in chronic pain. Some focus on athletes, and others geriatrics. It’s important to find a chiropractor that aligns with your family’s individual needs. At our office, our doctors know and understand the modern and unique challenges that families face, and are trained in techniques that are gentle and specific to the changing needs of pregnancy, childhood, and adulthood. We also provide a variety of free monthly support groups and gatherings for parents and their children to attend. Dr. Brittney Keller and Dr. Molly Tillman at Thrive Family Chiropractic would be honored to serve your family and help you live your best life. To make an appointment, please call our office at 402-615-6022.

Expecting Or Not, Women Find Expert Care With Certified Nurse Midwives

xpectant mothers and women at all stages of life are turning to time-honored experts in care: certified nurse midwives. Midwife means “with woman.” The French term for midwife—sage femme—translates to “wise woman.” As one of the oldest vocations in history, midwives are mentioned in the Bible and recognized as far back as ancient Egypt. Today’s certified nurse midwives (CNM) are advanced practice registered nurses with training and certification in nurse midwifery, or the care of women throughout their lifespan, from family planning through menopause, and especially for pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum care. A renewed interest in natural childbirth in the US has resulted in a resurgence in the popularity of midwifery. Since 1989, the percentage of midwife-attended births has risen nearly every year. When the Good Life Birth Place opened in 2017, it became

Nebraska’s only free-standing birth center and was designed specifically for the midwife model of care. Here, CNMs offer preconception counseling, deliver babies, and provide well woman care. Services include: •• Regular exams throughout pregnancy •• Assistance with birthing plan decisions, such as whether or not to use anesthesia •• Help with breastfeeding and infant soothing techniques •• Postpartum medical care for women and newborns •• Well woman care, including Pap smears, throughout a woman’s lifespan For expectant moms, midwife care is designed for non-complicated pregnancies, when the mom-to-be desires childbirth that is as natural as possible with options for pain management and minimal medical intervention (labor induction, fetal monitoring, and episiotomy). The midwife birthing model

includes a wide range of services, including hydrotherapy, water birth, aromatherapy, nitrous oxide, and massage therapy, as well as preconception counseling and newborn screenings. If a patient’s pregnancy becomes complicated or when there’s a multiple birth, midwives collaborate with OB/GYNs and often remain on the medical team and with the birthing mother. That’s one reason the Good Life Birth Place maintains a close connection with CHI Health St. Elizabeth. Many pregnant women who receive prenatal care from CNMs give birth at the Good Life Birth Place. Others deliver a few blocks away at the Maternity Center at CHI Health St. Elizabeth due to personal preferences or medical issues that develop during the pregnancy. The two facilities have much to offer growing families.

Good Life Birth Place, Cornhusker Suite

The Good Life Birth Place has birthing suites, queen or fullsize beds, free-standing tubs, an in-suite bathroom and shower, and specializes in midwife care with

more natural options for delivery. Centered Pregnancy, a group prenatal care model practiced here, has been nationally proven to increase successful breastfeeding and reduce rates of preterm and low birth weight babies.

St. Elizabeth Maternity Center Room

The Maternity Center at St. Elizabeth features spacious delivery suites, whirlpool tubs for water births, state-of-the-art monitoring/scanning equipment, a Level III NICU, and 24/7 access to OB/GYN hospitalist care. Four-week Lamaze and twoweek Express Lamaze classes, plus Breastfeeding, Infant Care, and CPR courses are offered here. Many women don’t realize that midwife care extends before and well beyond childbearing years. With longer appointments and a collaborative approach, CNMs provide annual exams, perimenopause and menopause care, as well as diagnosis and treatment of minor gynecologic problems. You don’t have to be expecting to be interested in midwife care. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 402-488-6370.

Young Dancers Train For Success At True Dance & Company True Dance & Company (TDC)

Y

outh dancers of all ages can find their dance home at True Dance & Company. Boys and girls as young as two years old are welcomed by an exceptional team of experienced instructors. They recognize every dancer’s potential and work hard to encourage and ensure that dancers are meeting or exceeding their goals—whether it be to make a high school or college dance team, or to work professionally in the industry. Classes range from baby ballerinas to advanced turns, jumps, & leaps, and dancers can join at any age knowing that the instructors will provide personalized mentoring, instruction, and encouragement. “It is important to us at TDC to listen to and help achieve the goals of our students. A common goal is to make their high school dance team,” says Director Shari True. “High school dance teams are adding new levels of difficulty to accompany the constant increase of

highly skilled dancers hailing from the competition world, and we want to keep our students at the forefront of that level.” High school teams across the country have added to their requirements many tricks with high extension, succinct unity in turning, and advanced skill. TDC ensures that their dancers have the technical and performance training to compete with this skill level. Tessa Schulte, a Universal Dance Association staff member, teaches a weekly high school dance team prep class. Ashley Durst, a BFA graduate with a masters degree from OCU, one of the top dance programs in the country, teaches the turns, jumps, & leaps class. They also bring to the stage some of the biggest names in the industry to work their competition team, including guest artists from the So You Think You Can Dance circuit, master teachers, and faculty from university dance programs. “Because these master teachers are here for such a short time, it

pushes our dancers to pick up choreography in one or two rehearsals. This skill overlaps when they audition for their high school teams,” says Miss True. TDC is offering a summer intensive again this year with phenomenal guest artists flown in from around True Dance & Company celebrates all of their dancers who the country! auditioned and were accepted on to their area high school dance teams, including 26 students for 2019-2020! NASA Exhibition Coming To Morrill Hall University of Nebraska State Museum–Morrill Hall

A

new temporary exhibition, Sun, Earth, Universe, will be on display at the University of Nebraska State Museum– Morrill Hall through June 2020. Sun, Earth, Universe was developed in collaboration with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Sun, Earth, Universe exhibitions are distributed nationwide by the National Informal STEM Education Network (NISE Network). The Museum, in partnership with the Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience (NCMN), has been awarded the opportunity to host the new NASA exhibit. Part of a nationwide effort, the exhibit is designed to engage audiences in the awe-inspiring fields of earth and space science. This fun and compelling exhibition is for visitors of all ages. Packed with hands-on interactive exhibits and dazzling imagery, this 600-square-foot exhibition will connect visitors with current NASA science research and launch them on a journey to explore the universe! Visitors can follow the designbuild-test cycle of engineering and build a model spacecraft for their own mission to space. Spin a tumbler of 10,000 beads representing all of the stars we can see from Earth and search for the unique one that represents our sun. Reveal hidden images using the same tools NASA scientists employ to explore the otherwise invisible forces and energy of the universe. Take a break in the seating area and play the “Your Mission to Space” board game or help younger visitors pilot rovers across the Mars landscape play table. These fun exhibit experiences introduce visitors to ongoing NASA research in the fields of materials science, heliophysics, Earth science, planetary science, and astrophysics, and encourage them to imagine what the future of Earth and space science might hold. The University of Nebraska State Museum-Morrill Hall will host public program events that highlight the exhibit and space content:

Jewell Schock Museum of Natural History and the Fred G. Dale Planetarium at Wayne State College; and the Strategic Air & Space Museum in Ashland.

Founded in 1988, NCMN supports about 90 research scientists working in the nanoscience area from the University of Nebraska in Physics, Chemistry, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical and Materials Engineering, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, and other departments. The two organizations work with state and national industries in support of Nebraska’s overall economic development. Faculty members of NCMN carry out research concerned with a variety of nanoscience and technology areas. NCMN moved into the new 32,000-square-foot Voelte-Keegan Nanoscience Research Center in 2012 which provides state-of-the-art laboratories, shared research facilities, and administrative space in a central location. NNF has been supported by the National Science Foundation’s National Nanotechnology Coordinated Infrastructure since 2015.

ou can’t talk about birds without talking about bugs. And you can’t talk about bugs without talking about plants. Everything is connected. When you are outside exploring or playing and find a cool plant, see if it has any bugs on it. Perhaps you can see if the leaves have holes and bite marks—that is a great sign that bugs are nearby! If you have Nebraska plants in your yard or local park, then you will have amazing birds to observe, too. Birds need to feed their babies lots of bugs like caterpillars for their chicks to develop enough to leave the nest by the end of the summer. Without bugs there would be very few birds. Even though some bugs like mosquitoes and ticks can

The recital is open to the public. A free will offering will be taken at the door to benefit LMTA-MOP, which provides lowcost music lessons, instruments and their upkeep, and free sheet music to students who would not otherwise afford music lessons. Fiedler has received piano lessons from Dr. Marina Fabrikant through LMTA-MOP and is now paying it forward by fundraising for the Lincoln Music Teachers Association for Give to Lincoln Day. While studying with Dr. Fabrikant, he has consistently received superior ratings in piano performance, theory and ear train-

While Your Child Is Growing, Keep Going! By Lincoln City Libraries

H

ere at the library, we repeatedly remind parents that reading aloud to their children is the most important thing you can do to ensure that your child becomes a fluent reader and has all they need to achieve success in school and life. Sharing books should start at birth and continue through those crucial preschool years. But, is there a stop date? Is it when your child is reading on their own, when they’ve fully embraced their first series, or when they tell you to stop? My answer is always don’t stop. Recent data from an annual study conducted in Europe by Nielson Book Research tells us that “most parents stop reading to their child by the age of eight, with just 19% of eight-to-ten-year-olds read to daily by an adult, across all socio-economic groups, down 3% on last year.” The study explains that at 14%, boys were less likely to be read to daily compared to girls at 24%. What holds true for British children also

holds for American youth. But let’s explore the benefits of reading aloud to your older child and some strategies for making sure the reading happens. Reading aloud to an older child stretches their vocabulary and comprehension a little beyond their current reading level. Children’s books deal with issues many children face growing up. Books can be a gateway into discussing important issues you might have a difficult time introducing otherwise. Share a favorite book from your childhood, or your fascination with a historical period, hobby, or area of the world you’d like to know more about. Books can be both a bond and a bridge in families as children get older. Not sure how to fit reading into an already busy summer? We have some ideas to help. 1. Do a bit of research to discover the best and most well-reviewed

books. Common Sense Media, www.commonsensemedia.org, has compiled a list of 50 books all children should read by the time they are 12. 2. Choose a classic, a book you loved as a child, or a buzzed-about book you’ve always wanted to read. Lincoln City Libraries has a list of the Top 100 Novels for Youth. We’re buying shiny new copies of these books for many of our branches this summer. Look for the printed list at the library or access it online at lincolnlibraries.org. 3. There are hundreds of lists online

for all ages and interests. I like Brightly for age range lists, www. readbrightly.com, Brown Bookshelf for books written or illustrated for young people by Black creators, thebrownbookshelf.com, our very own Novelist K-8 lets you browse books by mood, setting, subjects, and the important If You Liked setting. 4. Set a reading goal for the summer with your child. Maybe you can commit to reading three novels each, and one together. Make sure your child sees you reading. 5. Make regular trips to the library together to keep reading materials abundant and fresh. The library staff will be sharing five or six of their favorite books through photos on Facebook this spring and summer in a social media campaign called #showusyourstacks. We hope our summer readers will share in the fun by photographing their book stacks, sharing on Facebook, and tagging Lincoln City Libraries and using the hashtag. We can’t wait to see you at the library this summer.

Raising Kids Who Say, “Yum, Broccoli!” Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln (PHL)

P

Training A Child’s Taste Buds

arents often lament that they find it hard to get their kids to eat veggies. With childhood obesity in epidemic proportions, training kids’ taste buds to enjoy and prefer vegetables from infancy and toddlerhood gives parents the best chance at helping their children form lifetime healthy eating habits. It’s not a journey without obstacles. The latest statistics still show 90% of TV or screen/online food marketing aimed at children is for unhealthy food. Research from the Rudd Center for Food Policy & Obesity finds that strong emotional associations are created through advertisements with children able to recognize brands and logos by the time they’re two years old— and once those emotional attachments are established, they are hard to break. The tricks food companies use to get veggies into your kids’ diets, like hiding kale in tater tots or mixing vegetables into fruit purees, don’t really work to develop a veggie habit. Rather, it trains a child’s taste buds to like salt or fruit sugars instead of the distinct flavor of vegetables. Infancy and toddlerhood are critical stages of development that provide the best opportunity to introduce a wide variety of “unmasked” vegetable flavors. Kids need to experience the actual vegetable—how it looks, its taste, and its texture—to help them learn to prefer healthy food, says Dr. Natalie Muth of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

PAGE 18 • LINCOLNKIDSINC.COM

Kids And Gardens Where to begin with that experience? According to multiple studies compiled by the University of Colorado, children who are involved in growing their own food are more likely to eat fresh fruit and vegetables. Allowing your toddler to dig in the ground with you in your garden can set the stage for associating veggies with a happy experience. Preschool can provide another garden opportunity. Educare of Lincoln and Community Action Partnership incorporate gardens into their preschool programming. Southern Heights Presbyterian Church created a two-acre garden called the Food Forest that includes an outdoor classroom for kids. Dimensions Education Preschool program also offers children an opportunity to care for a garden in their outdoor classroom.

School Gardens And Harvest Of The Month Lincoln Public Schools have embraced the value of gardens and gardening to the overall health of children, as well. There are currently 27 outdoor school gardens in addition to a number of indoor tower gardens. Tower gardens are yearround, indoor vertical growing sys-

tems that plug into an electrical source to grow plants using circulating water & nutrients rather than dirt. The gardens not only teach kids about the science of growing, but also provide an ongoing opportunity to taste fresh produce. Learn more about school gardens and the LPS Sustainability program at lps.org/recycling. Further promoting healthy eating, two Lincoln faith-based schools, St. Michael’s and St. Patrick’s, have incorporated “Harvest of the Month” into their curriculum, allowing students to taste test locally sourced, in-season fresh produce or food from their own raised bed gardens. The WeCook program in Lincoln’s Community Learning Centers teaches kids how to make healthy snacks incorporating fresh fruits and vegetables.

Starting A Garden If you’re interested in starting your own garden, you can find gardening-

related classes and educational resources from UNL Extension at lancaster.unl.edu/yard-garden. If you’d like to have or share a plot in a community garden, or are interested in starting a garden at your church, business or shared neighborhood space, contact Community Crops at communitycrops.org. Then dig in with your kids and start them on the road to healthy weights and loving broccoli. Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln (PHL) is a non-profit o rg a n i z a t i o n dedicated to improving the health, wellness, and fitness of our community. We collaborate with other organizations on joint projects to improve health by increasing physical fitness, promoting healthy weights and good nutrition, supporting breastfeeding, and improving vaccination and cancer screening rates.

Farmers Markets How’s It Better Than A Grocery Store?

Farmers Market Coalition & Fallbrook Farmers Market

Y

ou hear about farmers markets all the time, but what does “farmers market” actually mean?

What Is A Farmers Market? A farmers market is where local farmers and food producers sell directly to shoppers at a specific time and location, often once a week. Most markets operate rain or shine during their season.

What Will You Find There? Local farm fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, eggs, cheese, baked goods, plants & more! Markets are also community gathering places with free, familyfriendly events and activities.

How Does It Work? When you get to the market, visit the different producers and pay for your purchases at each tent. Take your time and browse, compare different varieties of products, and ask questions. You can use cash and credit cards at most markets. Visit the Information Tent to see if the market accepts SNAP/ EBT, offers SNAP Match tokens, or accepts WIC/ Senior FMNP.

Seasonal food is fresher—you can taste the difference! Farmers market prices are competitive with retail stores and often have more produce varieties. Shopping at your local farmers market means supporting small businesses and taking part in your community.

Fallbrook Farmers Market Join the Fallbrook Farmers Market for our summer season on Thursdays from 4–7 pm, June 6 through August 1, and come to our Free Family Fun Festival on Thursday, June 13th, with awesome vendors, big bounce houses, and the String Beans performing from 6–7 pm! Also, plan to join us for our fall markets on September 12 and October 10 for the opportunity to stock up on local fall produce and fair. Fallbrook Farmers Market is located in northwest Lincoln at 600 Fallbrook Boulevard and operated by the Fallbrook Kiwanis Club, which believes all kids should have opportunities to access healthy foods, play outside, read, and serve others.

ome to The Railyard for LES’ ninth annual Sustainable Living Festival from 9 am to noon on Saturday, July 27th! LES’ signature summer event is free, family-friendly, and full of learning opportunities! It’s a chance for LES to team up with community partners and demonstrate simple tips for saving energy and leading more environmentally friendly lives while having a ton of fun. This event provides hands-on learning for kids and adults to show how each of us can help make the Lincoln area an eco-friendly community through a variety of core STEMinspired activities. You’ll be able to design, build and test a wind turbine, build solar race cars, and learn about recycling and composting by getting up close and personal with some creepy, crawly composters provided by Big Red Worms. Kids will also be able to participate in the Little Lineworkers Rodeo, a spin on what the LES’

Lineworkers do every day. They’ll put on a hardhat, rubber gloves, and safety glasses, change out insulators and sort cables—all while being timed so that they can race to beat their personal best. Your Little Lineworker dressed-up in their kid-sized equipment makes for a great photo opportunity! Current LES Kids Club members will be able to snag an exclusive Energizer trading card and see all the LES Energizers! LES families can sign up to be part of the LES Kids Club at LES.com/kids. We roll out the “orange carpet” for these LES friends! Our electric and hybrid vehicles will return, with Teslas, Chevy Bolts, Nissan Leafs and more. hen I was growing up my brother and I had a fort. It wasn’t something we bought or built, it was just empty space between the wall of the house and a row of bushes, but as a kid, it was so much more. It was where we hung out with friends, invented games, and played make-believe. It was our space to do kid stuff, and it felt magical. My childhood fort is not much different than the magic spots our campers make at Wilderness Nature Camp. Magic spots have been a longtime tradition at our Wilderness Nature Camp. Magic spots are areas off the trails, tucked in the woods, where sticks, fallen leaves, old bark, and other natural loose parts become building material. These spots might not look like a fort to the untrained eye, but to our campers, magic spots are a place to gather, play, grow friendships, and make memories. It is not a surprise magic spots are at the top of many of our camper’s “What

We teach archery, do yoga, go on field trips, and play capture the flag. We are immersed in nature, so muddy shoes and dirty clothes are usually a result of all of the fun. Wilderness Nature Camp is for ages 6-13. Camps take place 8:30 am–5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, June 10–Aug 2. There is no camp the week of July 4th. “Fantastic camp,” wrote one parent, “My kid loved the whole expe-

Young adults gain leadership skills while enjoying the outdoors. Campers participate in team building activities, including a high ropes challenge course on the last day of camp. Leadership Camp participants also have the opportunity to volunteer as Junior Counselors and assist the camp staff during Wilderness Nature Camp. Camp Discovery is a half-day, Monday through Thursday summer program for 3-6 year-olds. This camp, led by the Nature Center’s Preschool Director, is the perfect intro to camp for young explorers. Themes include Outdoor Classroom, Jerome the Gnome, Reptile Ramble, Forest Friends, Mud Pies, and Bubbles, Boats, & Floats. t’s hard for me to believe that I am celebrating 20 years of teaching Kindermusik. Yes, 20 years! That means some of the first kiddos I was blessed to teach may be entering their junior year of college. Incredible! In my estimation, I have worked with nearly 1,500 children, both in my studio and through various forms of outreach. That’s a lot of hugs, bounces, dances, and hand clapping for sure. Do you find yourself asking, What is Kindermusik? and What does it offer my family? Kindermusik is an award-winning international music and movement program for children ages 0-7 years. The following are the key components of the program, and honestly, the very reasons I continue to teach the Kindermusik curriculum exclusively: •• Child-led, family focused. Caregivers are a child’s first and most important teachers. We honor that belief and provide support via our classroom activities and well-

trained educators, but also through our fantastic home materials. Home materials allow EVERY day to be a Kindermusik day. •• We approach learning through the total development of the child, through language and literacy acquisition, social and emotional encouragement, physical skills, and last but not least, the joy of music. •• The potential to follow the full 7-year continuum of learning. A child can start classes as a lap baby, progress to a teetering walker, then verbally expressive toddler, followed by an imaginative preschooler, and finally, a schoolage child beginning to read music and play three instruments. •• ALL children are welcome here. There are no exclusions in our classrooms. Whether your child is following the “typical development” of early childhood or has special needs such as speech delays, developmental delay diagnoses, or physical challenges, Kindermusik is thoughtfully inclusive of all. Avoiding The “Summer Slide” Gwelda Carlson, Nebraska Dyslexia Association (NDA)

T

he “summer slide” is the loss of academic skills, including reading ability, that occurs during summer break. Students who don’t engage academically during the summer months are at risk of falling behind their classmates. According to the National Summer Learning Association, lower-income children lose two to three months of

reading skills during summer break, and that this loss accumulates year after year, while higher-income students make slight gains academically. Their findings reveal that the summer slide accounts for two-thirds of the reading achievement gap between low- and middle-income children by the time they begin high school. Research shows that reading and enriching activities can eliminate the loss of learning over the summer for low-income children. Establishing

summer reading habits can provide a foundation for success.

How To Avoid The Slide 1. Provide access to books. Public

libraries are free for anyone to enjoy their books on site, and library cards to Lincoln City Libraries are free for Lincoln & Lancaster County residents, providing the opportunity for local families to take home books at no cost. 2. Let your children select reading materials themselves. Children who choose the books they want to read tend to read more and maintain more interest in reading. Children who feel that reading is fun tend to read more often. Reading encourages creativity, imagination, and continued learning. 3. Involve your child in library programs, like the summer reading challenge and the daily story times and activities that are free for children and families. Children who participate in library programs benefit academically & socially from story times and ac-

tivities designed to engage youth and enhance reading & library experiences. 4. Read aloud to your children for pure enjoyment and to improve your parent-child bond. Reading aloud also expands vocabulary, fosters concentration, and teaches discipline. A squirming toddler eventually gains the ability to focus on longer and more complex stories. Reading is a fun way to help little kids sit still and listen. 5. Read to yourself, too. Children tend to be encouraged to read when they observe their parents enjoying reading as well. 6. If your child has dyslexia or struggles with reading, summer is an opportune time to get help from a tutor specializing in structured, multisensory instruction. A good tutor can be a lifeline for a student with learning difficulties. For information on helping the struggling reader, writer, speller, contact the Nebraska Dyslexia Association (www.ne-da.org) or call 402-434-6434.

Don’t Be Scared, Be Prepared! City of Lincoln Watershed Management

F

loods can occur anywhere— even in Lincoln. In fact, Lincoln has had many floods throughout its history. Some floods grow slowly, over many hours or days, while other floods, called flash floods, grow quickly. Flash floods can happen in just a few minutes, even when it isn’t raining. Floods can be scary, but being prepared can help you feel less scared. It is important to know what to do if a flood occurs, no matter where you live, but it is especially important if you live in a flood-prone area (low spots, near water, a dam, or levee). Talk to your family and create a plan for what you will do during a flood.

Creating A Plan •• Choose an out-of-town friend or family member to call in case of an emergency. •• Make a list of things that should be moved away from flood water. Is there an area of your house that would stay dry during a flood?

•• Choose a meeting spot. Where will your family meet if your neighborhood is evacuated while you’re not at home? •• Create an emergency kit. What will you need during an emergency?

Emergency Kit Check-List: •• Water (ready.gov suggests one gallon per person per day for 3+ days) •• Non-perishable food •• Manual can opener •• Extra clothing, blankets •• Stocked first aid kit & medications •• Battery, crank, or NOAA radio •• Flashlight •• Extra batteries •• Emergency whistle •• Backup cellphone charger/battery •• List of household members and emergency contacts sealed in a watertight container or bag. Can you think of other items to include in your emergency kit?

Remember: Turn Around, Don’t Drown! Do not play in or near floodwater. If floodwater is blocking your path,

do not attempt to cross! It only takes six inches of moving water to knock you off your feet. And it only takes 12 to 18 inches of moving water to carry away a vehicle.

Flood Watch vs. Warning FLOOD WATCH

Be Prepared! A Flood Watch means conditions are favorable for flooding. It does not mean flooding will occur, but it is possible. Be prepared to take action.

FLOOD WARNING

Take Action! A Flood Warning means a flood is already occurring or will occur very soon. It’s time to take action. If you live in a flood-prone area, follow the flood plan you and your family created.

FLASH FLOOD WARNING

Take Action Immediately! A Flash Flood Warning means a flash flood is already occurring or will occur very soon. Flash floods can happen very quickly. Take action immediately! Do not wait, move to higher ground. Stay away from streams, culverts, and ditches.

TORNADOES It’s tornado season in Nebraska. You’ll hear tornado sirens when a tornado warning is issued, when there’s a confirmed sighting, or during a drill. Tornadoes favor the afternoon & early evening, but can occur at any time, year-round. You could be anywhere when the alarm sounds. What should you do? Indoors: Go to the tornado shelter or a small interior room in the basement or on the lowest level. Avoid large open rooms & windows. Cover your head. Pillows, blankets, a helmet, or a sturdy, heavy table can add protection. Take pets if time allows. Mobile Homes: Even if tied down, leave and move to the nearest substantial shelter ASAP and follow the above instructions for “indoors.” Outdoor or in a Vehicle: Shelter in a nearby sturdy building—NOT a shed/storage building. If shelter isn’t available, lay flat in a low ditch or ravine and cover your head & neck. Be mindful of flood waters. Distance yourself from your vehicle or other heavy objects that could land on you. Do not shelter under an overpass. Sources: National Weather Service; NEMA

Summer Safety For Families Safe Kids Lincoln–Lancaster County

K

ids can be funny, adventurous, and smart. Kids are also like sponges, watching us just as closely as we are watching them. Here are some summer safety tips for your family that will help your kids learn ways they can explore and still be safe.

Bikes, Skates, & Walking We have a simple saying: “Use your head.” Wear a helmet when using a bike, skates or skateboard. Parents remember, kids learn from watching you, so it’s essential that you model proper behavior. Wear a helmet when riding a bike.

PAGE 30 • LINCOLNKIDSINC.COM

Children under ten years old should only cross the street with an adult or older sibling. As kids get older, they are anxious for a little more freedom, and walking to places like the playground could be fun. Encourage your kids to make eye contact with drivers when crossing streets. Practice with your kids to look left, right, and left again when crossing the street. Always cross at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks. Teach them to never run or dart out into the street between cars or cross between parked cars. Most injuries happen mid-block.

Water Safety What a great way to spend the summer—splashing around, playing games with water toys, and learning to swim. Teach kids never to go near or in water without an adult present. Water wings and noodles can create a false sense of security for kids and should not be used in place of life jackets. Whether you’re swimming in a backyard pool or a lake, children need to

learn how to swim and should never be allowed to swim alone. Home pools or spas need a proper drain cover or shut off function to prevent long hair, loose clothing, and body parts from getting trapped. Backyard pools need to have four-sided fencing at least 4 feet tall with a self-closing, self-latching gate to prevent a child from wandering into a pool area unsupervised. It is city ordinance LMC: 8.36.020.

Playground Safety Older kids usually become more adventurous on the playground and start to take more chances. Check the playgrounds where your children play. Look for age-appropriate equipment and hazards like rusted, broken equipment and dangerous surfaces. Avoid playgrounds with non-impact absorbing surfaces, like asphalt, concrete, grass, dirt or gravel.

Home Safety Burns caused by direct contact with fire are common among kids ages 5–9. Actively supervise kids

in the kitchen and around electrical appliances, and teach them how to behave responsibly. Don’t allow children to use a microwave by themselves until they are both tall enough to reach it safely and able to understand that steam causes burns. Make it a habit of placing matches, lighters, and other dangers in a safe place out of children’s reach and sight. Visit our website for more injury prevention tips and our calendar of events, safekidslincoln.org Safe Kids Lincoln-Lancaster County focuses on six of the leading causes of unintentional injury to children 14 years old and younger: child passenger safety, child pedestrian and bike safety, fire and burn prevention, water safety, home safety, and sports injury prevention. Coalition goals are to increase community knowledge on preventing unintentional injury of children, identify and modify environmental safety hazards within our community, and reduce child injuries by initiating and supporting policy development and law enforcement efforts. Keeping Pets Safe During The Summer Capital Humane Society

D

o you consider your pet to be an important member of the family? I know I do. The flooding disaster that affected much of our state this past spring is a powerful reminder that planning for emergencies is critical. Instead of frantically reacting, being prepared can help you in such events, like floods, tornadoes, and even summer heat and holidays. Here are some helpful pet tips for disaster preparedness and summer safety. Plan: Print off and complete the disaster preparedness handout in the pet owner resources section of our website, capitalhumanesociety.org, which provides helpful evacuation information and details how to prepare a pet emergency kit. Research: Prepare for potential problems by educating yourself using reliable resources, such as the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), to learn more about how to provide the best care for your pet. Exercise: When temperatures are high, walk and exercise your dog in the earlier and later hours of the day when the temperature is cooler. Use good judgment when your pet is outdoors—they can overheat quickly. Veterinary care: Talk to your veterinarian about preventatives for fleas, ticks, and heartworm. Ask about proper summer care and general preventative healthcare. Essentials: Pets need access to cool, fresh water and plenty of shade if they are outside in the summertime. As a rule of thumb, if it is too hot for you, your pet will appreciate the air conditioning, too.

Noise: Fourth of July celebrations can be fun for people, but are often very stressful for pets. Fireworks can cause physical injury, and many pets end up getting lost because they are afraid and will try to run from the noise. Your pet will appreciate being protected from these possible dangers by being kept safe inside. Remember to check on your animals throughout the festivities. Treats: Consider researching healthy recipes for making cool treats for your dog, such as peanut butter popsicles. Know that some foods, such as grapes, raisins, chocolate, and onions, can be poisonous to pets. Identification: Be sure your pets are wearing proper ID and that their microchip information is up to date. In the event of an emergency, proper identification will help ensure they can reunite with you. Organize: Make your pet’s care a priority by planning for emergencies as well as daily activities. If your pet’s needs are not on your to-do list, they are more likely to be ignored. Car Safety: As with children, never leave your pet in a car! Even with the windows down, it can become too hot very fast and your

pet can suffer and die. The inside of a car can quickly climb 40 degrees on a sunny day, with the windows up or partially open, and even if it’s a relatively cool 70 degree day (heatkills.org). Capital Humane Society appreciates all you do to take good care of your animals. Pets depend on us to make kind, responsible decisions. Be mindful and take the time to educate yourself so you can provide the best possible care for the furry members of your family. Limit location visibility. Many apps, like camera and social media platforms, enable location services with default permissions, which means that photos will embed location data wherever it was taken, potentially leading predators directly to your children’s home or school. Disable location in the phone or app settings, and talk to your children about the dangers of publicly sharing photos of themselves in recognizable locations. Check their profile privacy settings often to make sure posts and photos are viewable only by friends.

Watch Out For Downloads Your follow supports our business.

PAGE 32 • LINCOLNKIDSINC.COM

Downloads could contain malware or viruses. Equip your home with a

good cybersecurity system, such as a Windstream Shield package, that provides your family with malware and virus protection. Educate your family to never click on suspicious links in emails, direct messages, or texts, especially if they don’t know the sender.

Monitor Your Child’s Activity Some kids are fine with restrictions on what they can and can’t do online; others might not understand the limitations and could push back or rebel, which can be dangerous if they know how to hide their online activity from you. If you can’t beat them, join them! Follow your children on all social media platforms, check out their gamer profiles from time to time, and keep up with trending apps.

Keep A Low Profile Assist with profile setups for your children. Talk to them about the importance of not sharing information with strangers and the tricky

ways predators may try to obtain personal information via chats and other platforms. Have your kids use avatars instead of uploading their photos to their social media profiles, and discuss the importance of refusing friend requests from strangers.

Set Some Rules Establish rules for your children’s online activity, such as when they can play video games and for how long. Disable certain features that you don’t want them to have access to. Keep the conversation open and positive, that way if something seems “off" or if a concern arises they can feel comfortable coming to you about it. Let them know that they have earned a high level of trust with their responsible behavior.

Stephanie Laux is a field operations consultant for Windstream in Nebraska. She and her team at Windstream work to ensure that families are protected against the dangers of the online world. For more information on how to protect your kids online, visit Windstream.com.

or some people, music is a hobby. For some, a career. And for some, it is simply an everyday part of life. Studying music is proven to improve your mood, promote physical health, and even boost test scores. By studying music, students gain confidence and skills they can use in their everyday life. They learn to persist until the task is finished, and they don’t shy away from a challenge. Students become accustomed to

trying new things, and they learn to make decisions that suit them personally. Music gives everyone the opportunity to explore—not just the art itself, but the person they can become through its presence in their lives. At Fleur de Lys, we offer private voice and piano lessons, and we focus on the individual needs of every student. A little bit of hope is all a child may need to continue fighting, and a wish definitely gives a lot more than a little hope. A wish makes all the difference. Fourteen-year-old wish kid Lily was diagnosed with a rare vascular malformation called KlippelTrenaunay Syndrome (KTS) when she was just a few days old. Lily’s parents were stunned with the news. The Lautenschlager’s world was shaken, but together as a family, they knew they would face Lily’s diagnosis head-on. There was only one thing that Lily really wanted for her wish, and that was a service dog. He has given Lily independence and strength. The doctor’s appointments and surgeries will never stop, but neither will this wish and what it will provide for this family. Kahoot has given a sense of hope to the entire family. He has brought them together in a way that doesn’t revolve around medicine and obstacles, but around laughter and love. Lily’s wish gave her a friendship that can’t be traded for anything, but most importantly, her wish gave her hope. Imagination By Tamara Kaye Creative Director and Founder

ebster defines imagination as “the ability to form a picture in your mind of something that you have not seen or experienced; the ability to think of new things.” Now imagine this...a world without creativity. A thought, a hum, an idea, a swirl, a twirl...what if all of these things didn’t find ways to knock on the PAGE 44 • LINCOLNKIDSINC.COM

doors of our imaginations each and every day? And what if the people who take them seriously didn’t write that song you love, or that book that changed your perspective, or that painting you stop and stare at every time you walk past it? What else would we share in the absence of those things? What language would we speak to express that thought after mere words failed? There would be no need for crayons, for instruments, for stages, maybe even for that camera on your cell phone. How would we ponder anything? Or daydream? Or contemplate the things beyond what our senses perceive? How would we think new things, the

kind of things that light up our minds, or bring us joy, or help us heal? What better way to share being human than to celebrate, encourage, and express kindness through something we all have in common: our imagination. It has the power to change everything, including our perspective on our own self and story. It is waiting for us everywhere we go and can be found everywhere we look...but especially in each other. People are important. Moments matter. May we never forget this.
