LIncoln History
About Lincoln University Since its founding in 1854, Lincoln University, the nation’s first degree-granting Historically Black University, has had an internationally recognized commitment to excellence in scholarship and service. Lincoln University graduates have distinguished themselves in many fields including medicine, science, theology, education, law, and the arts. In addition to our more visible graduates – Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall ’30, poet and playwright Langston Hughes ’29, the first president of Nigeria, Nnamdi Azikiwe ’30, and the first president of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah ‘39 - Lincoln University and its graduates have achieved the following additional distinctions: participated in the founding of eight universities in the United States and abroad, created the organization (Crossroads Africa) which served as the model for the U.S. Peace Corps, and published the first Alumni Magazine of any college or university (1884). Lincoln graduates also include the first African American bishop of the United Methodist Church, Roy C. Nichols ’41, and the first African American female rear admiral in the U.S. Navy, Lillian Fishburne ’71. The University’s beginnings can be traced back with recognition to its founder, Presbyterian Minister John Miller Dickey, his wife, Sarah Emlen Cresson, and the first two students - James Ralston Amos and his brother, Thomas H. Amos. Lincoln University was initially chartered as Ashmun Institute in honor of Jehudi Ashmun, the first governor of Liberia, and renamed Lincoln University in 1866 after the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Since its inception, Lincoln has attracted an interracial and international enrollment from the surrounding community and region, and around the world. The University admitted women students in 1952, and formally associated with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1972 as a state-related, coeducational university. A total of 15,500 students have graduated from Lincoln since its founding in 1854.

Lincoln University has had 12 presidents that have made distinctive and significant contributions to the institution’s growth and development. They include Dickey (1853-78); John Pym Carter (1856-61); John Wynne Martin (186165); Isaac Norton Rendall (1856-1906); John Ballard Rendall (1906-24); William Hallock Johnson (1926-36); Walter Livingston Wright (1924-26; 1936-45); Horace Mann Bond (1945-57); Marvin Wachman (1962-69); Herman Russell Branson (1970-85); Niara Sudarkasa (1987-98) and Ivory V. Nelson (1999present). Accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, Lincoln University offers forty (40) academic majors, six (6) pre-professional programs, and five (5) graduate programs to 2,450 students from 24 states and 35 foreign countries. The University has five programs of excellence in Sciences (Chemistry, Phys-
ics, Biology, Computer Science, Mathematics and Environmental Science), Teacher Education, Business and Technology (Accounting and Finance), Mass Communications and the Lincoln-Barnes Center of Excellence in Visual Arts. Currently, Lincoln University is one of the nation’s largest producers of African Americans with baccalaureate degrees in the physical sciences, computer and information sciences, and biological and life sciences. In addition, Lincoln University has the distinction of having 25 of its chemistry graduates

A Legacy Of Producing Leaders (1989 to 2004) to earn Ph.D. degrees in chemistry and related fields. Under Ivory Nelson’s presidency, the Board of Trustees approved changes that redefined the core curriculum and curriculum structure to keep pace with the ever changing face of higher education and prepare Lincoln’s students for success in graduate and professional studies and high potential career aspirations. Lincoln University’s historic campus is located on 422 acres in southern Chester County, Pennsylvania. Lincoln also operates a 200,000 square foot Center for Graduate Studies and Continuing Education in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 2000, the University began massive programmatic and physical plant upgrades. In the eight years that followed, Lincoln University secured $275 million to enhance the physical facilities and redesign the campus’ infrastructure. These funds allowed the University to construct a new High-Tech Science and General Classroom Building (see above) as well as a state-of-the-art International Cultural Center. In addition to new construction, several major renovation projects of the University’s existing buildings were undertaken, including Ware Center, University Hall, Grim Hall, Wright Hall, the Langston Hughes Memorial Library, the Student Union Building and the University’s Center for Graduate and Continuing Education in Philadelphia. It was also during this time that Lincoln achieved its first ever investment
grade rating (A-3 rating from Moody’s Investor’s Service) that resulted in the sale of $40 million in bonds to construct a new 409-bed, air-conditioned residence hall to house its students. In April of 2006, Lincoln University continued its commitment to enhance the quality education and campus life experience for its student body, with the reinstatement of a football program and marching band to commence in fall 2008. The proposed move from Division III to Division II in 2006 also required the addition of a women’s softball team to the athletic offerings. In recent years, Lincoln has provided its male and female students the opportunity to participate in collegiate competition in baseball, basketball, soccer, tennis, track, cross country and volleyball. The Lincoln University track and field athletes have compiled an outstanding record of achievement in NCAA com-
petition, capturing a total of 17 men’s and women’s national championships. In celebrating Lincoln University’s historic past and promising future, we recognize and honor Lincoln’s three historic purposes: 1. To teach honestly, and without fear of censure, what humankind has painfully and persistently learned about the environment and its people. 2. To preserve this knowledge for the future. 3. To add to this store of knowledge. Lincoln University remains committed to preserving its distinction as an intellectual and cultural resource for this region.

About the president and director of Athletics President
Ivory V. Nelson
11th Year
Ivory V. Nelson became the twelfth president of Lincoln University on August 15, 1999, bringing with him more than 40 years of experience in higher education, administration, research, and community service. At the time of his appointment by the Board of Trustees, Nelson served seven years as president of Central Washington University in Ellensburg. While at CWU, Nelson secured $185 million in state funding; the CWU Foundation honored him by establishing a $50,000 Ivory V. Nelson endowed Graduate Fellowship in Chemistry; and the Board of Trustees conferred on him the title of President Emeritus. Prior to his work at CWU, Nelson served six years as chancellor of Alamo Community College District where the Board of Trustees honored him for his distinguished service to the district and for his implementation of a $100 million capital improvements program. He also served one year as acting president of Prairie View A&M University, and three years as executive assistant to the chancellor of the Texas A&M University System. Nelson enjoyed a successful academic career that included receiving the Fulbright Lectureship, teaching graduate and undergraduate chemistry, and serving as department head, assistant dean of academic affairs, and vice president for research. His career in the corporate sector includes assignments as a research chemist for both Union Carbide and American Oil Company. Lincoln University, founded in 1854, the nation’s first degree-granting HBCU, was in decline when Nelson stepped in and turned the institution around. Early in his tenure, he developed a five-year strategic plan with a clear vision supported by solid financial planning and phased construction. He eliminated operating deficits, audit findings, repaid outstanding loans and debt, removed Lincoln University from financial aid probation, secured $40.1 million financing through Insured AAA (A3 Underlying Rating) Bond Issuance, secured $27 million to renovate the University’s Graduate Center in Philadelphia, and secured over a quarter of a billion dollars in state funding for capital construction and renovation projects. He is featured in a 2003 issue of The Black Voices Quarterly, “Catalyst for Success: Chemist sparks Lincoln’s rebirth,” and in a 2005 issue of Main Line Today, “A Big Win at the Linc.” The new academic facilities and apartment-style residence hall enhance the University’s landscape and re-energized the campus and surrounding communities. Approximately $100 million (of the $250 million) is in the pipeline including a Wellness Center, athletic venues, and campus-wide landscaping with a pedestrian mall that will beacon students, alumni and visitors alike. Lincoln University has experienced unprecedented transformation and academic growth under Dr. Nelson’s leadership. He established a master development plan, implemented a new organizational structure, led a delegation of University administrators to review Rivers State University of Science and Technology in Rivers State, Nigeria, academically established five Centers of Academic Excellence in Science, Business, Teacher Education, Mass Communications, and Visual Arts, secured over $18 million in information technology improvements, increased faculty salaries, revised the University’s core curriculum, implemented a comprehensive outcomes assessment process for measuring student success and improving student retention, reduced all majors to a total of 120124 semester credit hours, reduced the number of academic majors from 52 to 38, increased University enrollment, and, after 48 years, brought back football and established a marching band. Dr. Nelson has been involved in numerous public service and professional activities, including member of the President’s Board of Advisors on Historically Black Colleges and Universities, the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO), the NCAA Division III Presidents Council, the Pennsylvania Association of Colleges and Universities, the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce College and University Presidents Council, the Brandywine Valley YMCA Board of Directors, and the Union League of Philadelphia. He is the recipient of numerous academic honors and civic awards including the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund Education Leadership and Educational Excellence Awards, the Philadelphia Tribune’s Philadelphia’s Most Influential African Americans Award, Harlem Week Guardian of Our Legacy Award, The Delta Sigma Theta Legacy of Love Educational Excellence Award, and Miller’s Gallery of Greats. He has authored numerous technical publications, a chapter in one book and a chapter in a monograph. He is listed among the world’s top scientists in a book entitled, Distinguished African American Scientists of the 20th Century. A native of Curtis, Louisiana, he entered the United States Air Force after graduating from high school where he attained the rank of staff sergeant working in crypto analysis with top-secret cryptographic clearance. He received his B.S. degree from Grambling State University (magna cum laude) and his Ph.D. degree in analytical chemistry from the University of Kansas, Lawrence with high departmental honors.

Outlook
New cast poised to raise bar in inaugural year in CIAA The men’s basketball program ushers in a new era of Lincoln men’s basketball. Not only are the Lions in their first year as an active NCAA Division II and CIAA member, but distinguished head coach John Hill enters his first season as the Lions head basketball coach. The CIAA veteran must cope with a roster that returns five players from 2009-10. Losing five seniors from last year’s team, senior forward Eugene Smith and junior guard Denzel Mooney are the primary returners. Smith averaged 7.5 points and 6.9 boards per game and was an ever-steady contributor. Mooney, meanwhile, hidden behind those seniors, all of which were guards, showed spurts of brilliance. Although he averaged just 5.9 points per game, he recorded a careerhigh 18 points behind four 3-pointers against a Kutztown team that was ranked No. 7 in the nation. He was a go-to threat from behind the arc but hopes to establish more of a dribble-penetration effort as one of the more experienced back-court members. Point guard Quinton Hector, shooting guard Terron Jones and forward Zane Oxley also return for the 2009-10 Denzel Mooney will be a central figure for the Lions in 2010-11, season. Hector is the likely candidate to run the point this boasting the most experience of any backcourt member. season after earning significant minutes in the CIAA a year a go. Jones, meanwhile, is a jump shooter but has the size to contribute down low. Oxley, at 6-foot-4, will be relied upon moreso than last year to contribute with points in the paint. Among the key members to this year’s squad are Daniel Mack, Derek Archie and Mickel Orr. Mack and Archie provide much-needed size to aid Smith in the block. At 6-foot-5 and 6-foot-6, respectively, last year’s guard-oriented attack may shift down low. Orr will compete with Hector for time at the point. Hill and the rest of this year’s team embrace the task ahead and look forward to making noise in one of the most tradition-rich conferences. With so many new players set to inhabit the roster, the success of the season depends on the ability of Hill to establish his program quickly and mesh together personalities that have not played together before. Hill’s background, though, established him as the clear frontrunner for the highly coveted position. As the head coach of the women’s team at Saint Paul’s College from 1998-2002 and the men’s coach at Virginia State from 2002-2005 he resurrected several programs, turning sub-.500 performances in his first year to contenders in year two. He also embraces his role as an educational figure, recognizing that the impact of a coach goes farther than diagraming plays on the chalkboard. Two of his teams at Saint Paul’s received CIAA Academic Team honors. With Hill in charge, the future is indeed bright for the Lions’ men’s basketball program. As part of that movement, this year’s team is the catalyst.

Coaching staff and roster Head Coach
John Hill
1st Season
Coach John Hill enters his first year patrolling the Lincoln bench. Boasting seven years of Division II head-coaching experience and another 13 seasons as an assistant, Hill has an established ability to build programs into conference and national contenders. “Coach Hill’s coaching experience and philosophy support the mission and priorities of the University necessary for a successful athletics program,” said Lincoln Director of Athletics, Dianthia Ford-Kee. “He understands the importance of establishing champions in the classroom and on the court. We look forward to Coach Hill and his staff building a program that our campus, alumni, local community and friends of the University will find entertaining and representative of Lincoln’s tradition of excellence.” From 1998-2005, Hill served as head coach at two separate CIAA institutions and earned the distinction of being a rigorous recruiter that demanded character both athletically and academically. As the architect of memorable women’s basketball teams at Saint Paul’s College, he spearheaded the Lady Tigers development from a 2-22 team in his first year in 1998-99 to one that never dipped below .500, finishing the next year at 15-11 and 2000-2001 at 17-9. In his fourth and final season in Lawrenceville, Va., SPC went 17-11. Following that successful venture into women’s basketball, Hill took the head men’s basketball position at Virginia State University for the 20022003 season. In a 5-11 inaugural year, the Trojans upset No. 10 Shaw University. Over the next two seasons, VSU went 14-12 and 13-14 for a 32-37 mark during his tenure. Hill’s teams defeated five ranked teams in addition to Shaw including Pfeiffer College (No. 7 nationally) and Queens College (No. 1 in the Northeast Region) in 2004-05. Having found the necessary formula for turning struggling programs into perennial winners while at Saint Paul’s and Virginia State, Hill became the ideal candidate for the position at Lincoln. The Lions finished 2009-10 4-22 while completing the transition from NCAA Division III to NCAA Div. II. “Lincoln University is in an ideal basketball location to recruit from metropolitan areas spanning from New York to Washington D.C. within a two-hour radius” Hill said. “No other CIAA school has that ability.” Two of Hill’s Saint Paul’s College teams won the CIAA Team Academic Award and one was honored by the NCAA. “I recognize as a leader, I have an obligation to explore all resources that will enhance the academic achievement of each student-athlete,” he said. “It is vital to generate a program atmosphere that fosters a winning attitude toward graduating and competing successfully in athletics.” After his stints as a head coach, he returned to the assistant capacity he occupied from 1990-1998 in order to gain additional insights from wellestablished programs. The last four seasons, he served under Shawn Walker as an assistant coach at Elizabeth City State University, where the Vikings earned bids to the NCAA Tournament in 2006 and 2007, won the CIAA Men’s Basketball Championship in 2007, and this past year, ECSU finished as runners-up. The teams accumulated a 74-42 record including back-to-back 20-win seasons in 2007 and 2008 while housing three all-conference players. Highlighting the group were three-time CIAA Player of the Year Anthony Hilliard and 2009-10 CIAA Rookie of the Year Angelo Sharpless. Prior to his time at Elizabeth City State, he spent the 2005-06 season as an assistant at national power California University of Pa. In a 17-11 season, the Vulcans earned a No. 9 ranking in the East Region and the first NCAA bid of Hill’s career. From 1990-1998, he served as an assistant men’s basketball coach beginning with his alma mater Greensboro College (1990-92) before moving on to Bloomfield College (1992-93), Kean University (1993-95) and Winston-Salem State University (1995-1998). Hill holds a bachelor’s of science degree in sociology and psychology from Greensboro College and a master of science in sport management from the California University of Pennsylvania. He is currently a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches, the Black Coaches Association and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.

Ahmad Moore
2nd Season
Coach Ahmad Moore is entering his second season as an assistant coach with the Lincoln University men’s basketball program and fifth year as the Director of Intramurals. In his inaugural year on a collegiate bench, four players averaged in double figures and aided in an upset of CIAA foe Bowie State in the final week of the season. Moore will play a major rule in assisting Coach Hill in developing this young team for the rigourous and stiff competition of NCAA Division II and the CIAA. Coach Moore gained coaching experience by coaching as a player-assistant coach at Frenchburg Job Corps (1994-97), where he averaged 32 points per game, and as the head men’s basketball coach at Great Onyx Job Corps (2003-05). Prior to his coaching career, he enjoyed a succesful collegiate playing career at South Florida Community College and Kentucky State University with a tenure at Frenchburg Job Corp Trade School sandwiched in between the two schools. He then obtained his bachelor’s degree in physical education with a minor in recreation from Kentucky State University. He is a member of the National Intramurals Recreation Sports Association (NIRSA). Moore and his wife Apryl reside in Maryland, and they have one daughter, Kimberly Elise.

We have joined institutions across 22 conferences and independents in committing to safe, fun, and entertaining sporting experiences on Division II campuses. We have signed the pledge to create and continue family-friendly experiences for everyone.
NCAA Division II presidents and chancellors affirm that athletics events should reflect the values of higher education and the mission of each institution. Division II emphasizes learning and development in a personal setting. As chancellors and presidents, we are concerned about the uncivil behavior exhibited at college athletics contests and thereby pledge to work together to make respectful, family-friendly events a standard of the Division II experience.
