About the University

S

its founding in 1854, Lincoln University, the nation’s first degree-granting Historically Black University, has had an internationally recognized commitment to excellence in scholarship and service. Lincoln University graduates have distinguished themselves in many fields including medicine, science, theology, education, law, and the arts. In addition to our more visible graduates – Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall ’30, poet and playwright Langston Hughes ’29, the first president of Nigeria, Nnamdi Azikiwe ’30, and the first president of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah ‘39 - Lincoln University and its graduates have achieved the following additional distinctions: participated in the founding of eight universities in the United States and abroad, created the organization (Crossroads Africa) which served as the model for the U.S. Peace Corps, and published the first Alumni Magazine of any college or university (1884). Lincoln graduates also include the first African American bishop of the United Methodist Church, Roy C. Nichols ’41, and the first African American female rear admiral in the U.S. Navy, Lillian Fishburne ’71. The University’s beginnings can be traced back with recognition to its founder, Presbyterian Minister John Miller Dickey, his wife, Sarah Emlen Cresson, and the first two students - James Ralston Amos and his brother, Thomas H. Amos. Lincoln University was initially chartered as Ashmun Institute in honor of Jehudi Ashmun, the first governor of Liberia, and renamed Lincoln University in 1866 after the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Since its inception, Lincoln has attracted an interracial and international enrollment from the surrounding community and region, and around the world. The University admitted women students in 1952, and formally associated with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1972 as a state-related, coeducational university. A total of 15,500 students have graduated from Lincoln since its founding in 1854. Lincoln University has had 12 presidents that have made distinctive and significant contributions to the institution’s growth and development. They include Dickey (1853-78); John Pym Carter (185661); John Wynne Martin (1861-65); Isaac Norton Rendall (1856-1906); John Ballard Rendall (1906-24); William Hallock Johnson (1926-36); Walter Livingston Wright (1924-26; 1936-45); Horace Mann Bond (1945-57); Marvin Wachman (1962-69); Herman Russell Branson (1970-85); Niara Sudarkasa (1987-98) and Ivory V. Nelson (1999-present). Accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, Lincoln University offers forty (40) academic majors, six (6) pre-professional programs, and five (5) graduate programs to 2,450 students from 24 states and 35 foreign countries. The University has five programs of excellence in Sciences (Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Computer Science, Mathematics and Environmental Science), Teacher Education, Business and Technology (Accounting and Finance), Mass Communications and the Lincoln-Barnes Center of Excellence in Visual Arts. Currently, Lincoln University is one of the nation’s largest producers of African Americans with baccalaureate degrees in the physical sciences, computer and information sciences, and biological and life sciences. More than 25 percent of its undergraduate degrees awarded are in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics and computer science. In addition, Lincoln University has the distinction of having 25 of its chemistry graduates (1989 to 2004) to earn Ph.D. degrees in chemistry and related fields. ince

Under Ivory Nelson’s presidency, the Board of Trustees approved changes that redefined the core curriculum and curriculum structure to keep pace with the ever changing face of higher education and prepare Lincoln’s students for success in graduate and professional studies and high potential career aspirations. Lincoln University’s historic campus is located on 422 acres in southern Chester County, Pennsylvania. Lincoln also operates a 200,000 square foot Center for Graduate Studies and Continuing Education in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 2000, the University began massive programmatic and physical plant upgrades. In the eight years that followed, Lincoln University secured $275 million to enhance the physical facilities and redesign the campus’ infrastructure. These funds allowed the University to construct a new High-Tech Science and General Classroom Building as well as a state-of-the-art International Cultural Center. In addition to new construction, several major renovation projects of the University’s existing buildings were undertaken, including Ware Center, University Hall, Grim Hall, Wright Hall, the Langston Hughes Memorial Library, the Student Union Building and the University’s Center for Graduate and Continuing Education in Philadelphia. It was also during this time that Lincoln achieved its first ever investment grade rating (A-3 rating from Moody’s Investor’s Service) that resulted in the sale of $40 million in bonds to construct a new 409-bed, air-conditioned residence hall to house its students. In April of 2006, Lincoln University continued its commitment to enhance the quality education and campus life experience for its student body, with the reinstatement of a football program and marching band to commence in fall 2008. The proposed move from Division III to Division II in 2006 also required the addition of a women’s softball team to the athletic offerings. In recent years, Lincoln has provided its male and female students the opportunity to participate in collegiate competition in baseball, basketball, soccer, tennis, track, cross country and volleyball. The Lincoln University track and field athletes have compiled an outstanding record of achievement in NCAA competition, capturing a total of 17 men’s and women’s national championships. In celebrating Lincoln University’s historic past and promising future, we recognize and honor Lincoln’s three historic purposes: 1. To teach honestly, and without fear of censure, what humankind has painfully and persistently learned about the environment and its people. 2. To preserve this knowledge for the future. 3. To add to this store of knowledge. Lincoln University remains committed to preserving its distinction as an intellectual and cultural resource.

Academic affairs The Academic Affairs division has a core mission of sustaining a nurturing learning environment capable of transforming its learners into academic achievers, professional contributors, and leaders in their fields of interest. The academic year brought continued progress in Lincoln University’s commitment to produce the caliber of graduates who can thrive in the culturally diverse, technological and global society in which they will live and work. The division is proud of its enduring legacy of outstanding teaching and mentoring of a wide cross-section of students. Approximately 2300 from within the United States and 100 from international origins. The university welcomed the class of 2010, the first freshmen cohort to study under a new, more academically rigorous undergraduate curriculum with its more compact, interdisciplinary core. The revised curriculum enhances the recently established five Centers of Excellence, including the new Lincoln-Barnes Visual Arts major in the School of Humanities and Graduate Studies. With selected minor concentrations in Museum and Collections Studies, Museum Education, Museum Communications and Professional Studio, the Barnes partnership seeks to create leaders in the cultural arts and museum genre through a unique educational experience. Unlike any other art program in the nation, the Barnes partnership has the core component of enabling students to study at a museum and come face-to-face with a collection of paintings by world famous artists. The School of Social Sciences and Behavioral Studies continues the advancement of its Center of Excellence in Business and Information Technology, which is equipping its banking, management, and accounting majors in all facets of enterprise resource planning, management, and entrepreneurial development. The uniqueness of this center provides students at Lincoln University the prospect of transforming an idea into a marketable product to create employment opportunities and wealth. The Center of Excellence in Teacher Education and Urban Pedagogy focuses on enhancing the ability of Lincoln University to help reverse the declining number of teachers in kindergarten through high school. This will be achieved by equipping students with the skills to provide young learners with the knowledge and tools to be successful in institutions of higher education or the workforce. Under the guidance of the faculty of the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, the Center of Excellence in Computational Science at Lincoln University will endeavor to be a key player in resolving the most important and complex scientific questions of the 21st Century. The center will concentrate on applications in environmental science, material science and biomedical science. This will enable graduates of Lincoln University to join the ranks of professionals engaged in understanding the complexities of alternative energy and biotechnology and resolving problems that are impossible by theory and physical experimentation alone. Now completing its third year of operation, Lincoln’s Excellent Academic Program in Science (L.E.A.P.S.), a $2.4 million program funded by the National Science Foundation, identifies and provides a pre-freshman summer bridge program for talented high schools seniors (31 in 2006-07) and is a retention-building centerpiece of this Center of Excellence. This program will position Lincoln University to significantly increase the number of science and mathematics majors enrolling in graduate and professional schools. In the area of student research, science majors regularly participate in summer research internships and Lincoln’s annual science fair as well as poster sessions sponsored by the Philadelphia Alliance for Minority Participation and the University of Florida. Furthermore, Lincoln’s School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics has

2011-2012 Lions Media Guide

concluded a major agreement with the School of Engineering of Morgan State University to begin a dual degree program in civil and industrial engineering. Participants will receive a bachelor’s degree in physics from Lincoln and in engineering from Morgan in a three-two format (three years at Lincoln and two at Morgan). Other achievements during the year included approval of Lincoln’s Teacher Certification Programs by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Those programs are Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Secondary Education with English, Spanish, French, Music, History, Political Science, Social Studies Certification, Mathematics, and Biology as cognate areas. Graduate Reading, Elementary Education, and Early Childhood Education also received approval. Significantly, Lincoln University was the only institution—state-related or private independent—to join a consortium of the fourteen state-owned universities and fourteen community colleges to undertake a major “articulation” project. Its purpose is to define general education, course credit equivalency among the schools to ease the transfer of students between the schools. Continuing through 2007-2008, the project will evaluate over a thousand courses in the building of a database of courses (managed by AcademyOne) that are immediately transferable among the 29 participating institutions. Faculty and students continued to distinguish themselves, increasing national recognition for the university. Dr. Kenneth VanDover, of the English and Mass Communications Department, spent a year lecturing on detective fiction and theory and the development of the novel in the University of Vienna in Austria as a Fulbright Scholar. Dr. Emmanuel Babatunde, of the Sociology and Anthropology Department, was appointed a Fulbright Senior Specialist and lectured on anthropology at the Eduardo Mondland University in Mozambique, Africa. Recipients of the Board of Trustees Distinguished Faculty Awards were Dr. Jeffrey Hoogeveen, winner of the Hildrus S. Poindexter Distinguished Faculty Award for Research; Dr. Babatunde, winner of the Soraya M. Coley Distinguished Faculty Award for Service; and Dr. Goro Nagase, winner of the Henry Cornwall Distinguished Faculty Award for Teaching. Dr. Marilyn Button, chair of the Department of English and Mass Communications, received the Christian R. and Mary Lindback Outstanding Teaching Award. Members of the faculty were engaged in continuous research efforts while a $4.2 million award from the Pennsylvania Department of Health was won to study colorectal cancer among residents in Northeast Pennsylvania. Drs. Anna Hull and Karen Baskerville will collaborate on the study. Additionally, the university was awarded a pair of $500,000 grants, one from the Department of Defense to investigate protein dynamics by using a single molecule spectroscope and another from NASA and the Department of Defense to recruit and retain minority physics and pre-engineering majors. Dr. Derrick Swinton will investigate protein dynamics and Dr. Willie Williams is the principal investigator for the grant from NASA and the Department of Defense. Students, on the other hand, achieved national recognition in a competitive academic arena. Senior accounting major Rumbi Tabvuma won first place in a national oratorical contest held in Indianapolis, Ind. Meanwhile, Briquel Sherman, Anthony Sherland and Talisha Cook were among winners at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students held in Anaheim, Calif.

Student Affairs & Enrollment Management In its continuing effort to enhance the quality of the living and learning environment at Lincoln, the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management (SAEM) continued to augment the numerous programs, activities and services available to students at the university. Life outside the classroom is more vibrant and stimulating perhaps than anytime before in the history of the university, given the numerous new initiatives that are currently occurring on the campus. With each passing year, Lincoln becomes more popular as witnessed by the record number of applications for admission that we are receiving annually. In 2006-07, both the undergraduate and graduate admissions offices achieved new enrollment records by enrolling the largest number of new undergraduate and graduate students in university history. With these records, the university also broke its previous year’s record for overall student enrollment by enrolling a total of 2,423 students for the academic year. The university continues also to set records for Open House attendance and the number of visitors to the campus annually. In addition to the great admissions news, Lincoln’s retention rate for first-time freshman increased, showing that not only are more students matriculating, more students are also staying to take advantage of the full Lincoln experience. The division of SAEM continued to offer students a wide array of co-curricular academic support programs and experiential learning experiences via the Learning Resource Center and Act 101 Achievement Program, the Office of International Programs and Services (including study abroad), the Office of Minority Male Health and the Office of Student Life and Development. The LRC and Act 101 Achievement Program continued to offer supplemental instruction and tutoring in reading, writing and math for all students enrolled in developmental courses and provided specialized counseling and programs for students enrolled in the Act 101 program. The study abroad and service learning numbers continue to rise as students continue to study in virtually every continent with new programs in Argentina, Ireland, Ecuador and Cambodia, as well as increased enrollment at the university-sponsored program in Japan. The Office of Minority Male Health continued community outreach efforts on and off campus as it daily demonstrated a concern for the health and welfare of our students and local community residents. The office started a mentoring program with local middle school students and continued to offer its LU Fitness Challenge programs. In addition, the Upward Bound program continued its SMARTS (Stay Motivated and Reduce Teen Smoking) initiative and the Women’s Center and Student Health Services conducted a massive HIV and AIDS campaign and made available on campus rapid testing for students on two occasions during the academic year. The Office of Student Life and Development and Department of Residence Life engaged in collegial competition as it sought to bring new and requested programs to the students of Lincoln University. The office continued to operate the New Student Orientation and Transition Week program and its First Year Experience Program for new students, which is undoubtedly one of the key mechanisms in the increased first-year student retention rate. To augment the positive retention data on first year students, the Office of Student Services began the planning and development of a Sophomore Experience Program, with implementation set for the 2008-09 academic year. One of the greatest areas of achievement within the division has been the provision of services to all students enrolled at the University. During the 2006-07 academic year, safety and security received a major boost with the significant capital purchase of a CCTV camera surveillance system for the entire campus. With the implementation of over 120 cameras throughout the campus, many with point, tilt and zoom capability, the Department of Public Safety is able to visually patrol all 422 acres of the university campus. The immediate payback for this system was seen throughout the academic year as department personnel were able to use this system to prevent and solve numerous cases on campus.

The student body and university community continue to be excited about the passage and implementation of the Student Enhancement Initiative, a Board of Trustees approved resolution that returns football and a marching band to the campus and allows Lincoln to transfer from NCAA Division III to Division II intercollegiate athletics and affiliating with the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. All academic buildings on campus have or soon will be renovated. In 2006-07, a $12 million renovation project began on the Student Union Building as well as Phase I of making the campus wireless. To augment all that is happening programmatically, the university is continuing to renovate and build facilities to meet the needs and desires of current students and to attract new students. The year represented another step in sustained determination by the division to make Lincoln University one of the most student-centered campuses in the nation. FISCAL AFFAIRS Major renovations and input for design, quality control and coordination on the many Commonwealth-funded construction projects took place on the main campus. During the year, Physical Plant personnel provided assistance of capital projects in progress. The maintenance and upgrade of our facilities during this period included: • LLC Auxiliary Boiler • University Hall Renovations and Furniture/Fixtures/ Equipment • Ware Center and Furniture/Fix tures/ Equipment • Back-up Generator • HVAC Systems and Controls • Asbestos Abatement • Roof Upgrades • Life Science Ventilation Upgrades The university is in the planning stages of additional upgrades or new construction. They include a $40.5 million General Classroom and Technology Building, an International Center and renovations of Langston Hughes Memorial Library and Wright Hall. Additionally, plans are under way to construct a tennis court and softball field and an academic center for learning and counseling. All of these efforts contributed to a new look and the air of anticipation as most academic buildings and the campus landscape will undergo modernization or be supplanted by larger, new structures and a dynamic new vista. In addition the Graduate Center campus is undergoing a dramatic transformation. An outside developer is investing $29 million to completely renovate and modernize the building. The university will occupy two floors in the renovated facility. The building will house efficient, all new equipment and interiors at one of the premier locations in Philadelphia. Information Technology (IT) infrastructure, risk management, disaster recovery and improved administrative systems were the issues driving the direction of the University’s Information Technology department. Many upgrades supported the renovation of the new buildings including replacement of the University’s voice mail system, completely new equipment and furniture for renovated buildings, expansion of the wireless network, conversion to a new, renumbered direct dial phone system for better security, new security cameras, a new administrative LionCard to allow electronic payment across the campus for auxiliary enterprises, including laundry, books, meals and copying in the library. New pianos also have been purchased and Smartboards have been placed in classrooms. The implementation of the new Datatel COLLEAGUE system for general ledger, accounts payable, purchasing, payroll, budgets, admissions, billing, student housing and registrar remained at the forefront of IT operations. During the year, all relevant users began intensive Datatel training to prepare for the upstart and smooth transition to the new system. The upgrades in IT and refurbishments in Physical Plant highlighted the university’s efforts to provide a safe and efficient work environment and maintain our facilities and support services at a level conducive to learning.

Season Preview

Lincoln University head men’s basketball coach John Hill embarks on his second season at the helm and faces an uphill battle. The Lions begin the 2011-2012 season facing stiff challenges as Lincoln was picked to finish sixth in the Northern Division in the Preseason CIAA Coaches Poll. But Hill would be quick to point out that it’s not where you start the season, but how you finish that season. RETURNERS The Lions return five players off last year’s 4-23 team, including All-CIAA First Team and All-CIAA Preseason Team member Denzel Mooney. Mooney (SG, 6-4, 200, SR, Baltimore, Md.) had a phenomenal junior season. He registered 24 double-digit scoring games, including scoring more than 30 points four times. Mooney, who ranked 18th nationally in scoring, had a career-high 37 points in a loss to Bowie State. For all of his accolades, Mooney, who became the first Lincoln University men’s basketball player to earn All-CIAA honors, averaged 21 points (second in the CIAA), 5.2 rebounds (17th in the CIAA) and 2.6 assists (14th in the CIAA) per game. He enters his final season just 136 points shy of 1,000 for his career. Joining Mooney is Terron Jones, who played in all 27 games last season. Jones (PF, 6-4, 200, SO, Bronx, N.Y.) had a solid freshman season for the Orange and Blue. He registered eight double-digit scoring games, including pouring in a career-high 22 points in the CIAA Tournament against Shaw. A solid free-throw shooter, Jones was 28-of-33 from the charity stripe for 85 percent and averaged 4.0 rebounds per game. Richard Glover played in 25 games, starting in 14 for the Lions during his sophomore season. Glover (SG, 6-1, 205, JR, Baltimore, Md.) scored in double figures twice, including a career-high 12 points, while going 6-of-8 from the free-throw line against Central State. He averaged 3.5 points and 2.1 per game. Dominique Stewart returns for his sophomore season after playing in 23 games as a freshman. Stewart (PF, 6-6, 190, SO, Islandia, N.Y.) earned 12 starts last season and scored season-highs of five points twice. He shot 47 percent (15-of32) from the field and finished the year by averaging 2.4 rebounds and 2.0 points per game. He pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds, including 10 on the defensive glass at Fayetteville State. The last of the returning players is Eric Johnson. Johnson (SG, 6-0, 190, SR, Allentown, Pa.) saw limited action last season, playing in a pair of

games. NEWCOMERS The Lions have eight newcomers, including five transfers. Lincoln will have a pair of brothers as a new addition to the 2011-2012 roster in George and Justin Jackson. George (PG, 5-11, 175, SO, Baltimore, Md.) will look to make an immediate impact at the point guard position. He comes to Lincoln University from Coppin State. While spending a year at Coppin State, George played in 22 games, starting in seven. He averaged 16.2 minutes, 3.0 points and 1.2 rebounds per game. He dished out 29 assists and was 19-of-26 from the free-throw line for 73 percent. Justin (SG, 6-0, 175, SO, Baltimore, Md.) comes to Lincoln from Morgan State University where he saw limited action last season. He played in 16 games, averaging 4.4 minutes and 0.7 points per game. Chris Kinney (PF, 6-6, 230, SO, Washington, D.C.) makes the small trip from Takoma Park, Md., to Lincoln University. He played last season at Washington Adventist University. Prior to WAU, Kinney, who played at Theodore Roosevelt Senior High School helped guide the school to the 2008 City Championship with a 24-6 record. Derrick Washington (PG, 6-0, 170, SO) comes to Lincoln from Independence Community College. Prior to ICC, Washington played at Calvin Coolidge High School where he was named Team MVP and earned Capital Classic honors. The final transfer is Kenneth Sharpe. Sharpe (SG, 6-3, 175, JR, Chester, Pa.) played last season at Frank Phillip Junior College. He attended George Washington High School in Philadelphia, Pa., where his career bests were 37 points, eight assists, eight rebounds and four steals. Hill added the right blend of newcomers and transfers as three players will make their collegiate debuts. Kyle Aiken (PG, 6-0, 185, FR, Randolph, N.Y.) was a two-time All-County, All-Conference selection at Randolph High School. His career bests include 36 points and 14 assists. Jai Kellman (SG, 6-2, 160, FR, Brooklyn, N.Y.) played at George Westinghouse High School where he captained the Warriors during the 2009-10 season. He poured in a career-high 42 points at Queen City Prep. Nyerere Pritchett (SG, 5-10, 185, FR, Middleton, Del.) comes to Lincoln from Charter School of Wilmington. He was selected to the 2010

All-State team.

THE SCHEDULE

The Lions begin the season in the PSAC-CIAA Conference Challenge as Lincoln plays host California (Pa.) and meets Clarion on the second day of the challenge. The first home game for the Lions is Nov. 16 against Millersville and two days later, Lincoln takes on rival Cheyney at the Liacouras Center at Temple University. November continues to be an extremely busy month for the Lions as Lincoln plays host to Goldey-Beacom on 22nd. The highlight of the month comes Nov. 25-26 as the Lions travel more than 800 miles to play in the Fresh Coast Classic at Wisconsin Lutheran College. Lincoln opens classic play against Fisk University and will meet either Bowie State or Cheyney on the second day. “Our participation in the Fresh Coast Classic will provide an opportunity for the student-athlete to experience visiting the Midwest part of the United States,” Hill said. “Many of our student-athletes have only been fortunate enough to enjoy the eastern portion of the country. The goal is always to provide a learning environment that will allow the student-athletes to be enhanced intellectually. This trip’s exposure will be remembered when reflecting upon their collegiate basketball experiences. “Most of the players do not know we are visiting Green Bay Packer territory, whose fans are known as the Cheese Heads. Overall, it’s a great HBCU basketball event in the Midwest that provides a tournament atmosphere like no other this early in the season. We are looking forward to the challenge of spirited competition and enjoying the City of Milwaukee.” Lincoln ends the month of November by traveling to Washington Adventist on the 30th. The Lions will play only three contests in December - vs. Pfeiffer (3rd), at Holy Family (13th) and at Central State (16th). Lincoln steps into CIAA play as the calendar flips to January. The Lions travel on the 5th to Saint Augustine’s College, before playing host to three straight games against Livingstone (7th), Johnson C. Smith (9th) and Fayetteville State (12th). Lincoln may enjoy that three-game homestand, but the Lions hit the road for four consecutive games starting on the 16th against Winston-Salem State. Lincoln takes on Shaw (19th), Elizabeth City State (21th) and Chowan (23th). The Lions conclude the month with a pair of games starting on the 28th against Bowie State and the 30th versus Virginia Union at Manuel Rivero Hall. Lincoln starts off February with three straight home games as the Lions play host to Virginia State (2nd), Elizabeth City State (7th) and against Chowan (9th). The Lions spend the next three games on the road, first against Bowie State on the 11th in a CIAA televised contest. Lincoln plays on the 18th against Virginia Union and 20th at Virginia State before playing host to Washington Adventist for Senior Day on the 23rd. The CIAA Championships start on Feb. 29 in Charlotte, N.C., at the Time Warner Cable Arena.

2011-2012 Lions Media Guide

1. What are your expectations coming into the season? We have taken on this season with great enthusiasm and optimism for much progress. We are a program that’s trying to rebound from many challenges of our past. So, this season will be marked as the first of our rebuilding process. Nonetheless, OUR GOAL is to prepare to be successful and very diligent about improving each day. I expect us to compete at a level in which we can deliver at least a .500 season. With the return of Denzel Mooney and a talented recruiting class it’s conceivable for us to have a fair amount of success. WISH US THE BEST…GO LIONS…!!! 2. How do you build off of your first year? You know we have four players returning from last year’s team, which had the opportunity to gain a great deal of game time experience. We are also fortunate to have the Central InJohn Hill tercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) leading Head Coach scorer returning in Denzel Mooney. Our plan is to build the center piece of the program around and upon the experience of the student-athletes whom were here last season. 3. Denzel Mooney is the featured player and had an outstanding season. Talk about his character and the level of play he brings game in and game out? Denzel did in fact have an exceptional year last season, marked by being Lincoln University’s first All-CIAA recipient in basketball. He is a young man who emerged as a leader last season and has continued to do so in setting positive examples for our new players. His work ethic and commitment to being the best is unquestionable. He exhibits a passion and sincere desire to help others around him reach their goal as it benefits the common good of the whole program. Denzel has really embraced a mindset of SUCCESS for Lions Basketball and has been intentional in communicating that we must be prepared to WIN. Every night he looks forward to the challenge of been a consistent contributor for his Team. He is a fearless competitor who understands the presence of his leadership is needed each night to navigate us to victory every game. 4. Talk about the returning players and what do you expect from them? We have five returning players from last year’s team. Each of them had the opportunity to receive a gainful year of experience under Coach Hill’s basketball philosophy. These players were able to get a lot of game time experience, which should beneficial to the program this season. The returning players we will be depending upon are Terron Jones, Dominique Stewart, Eric Johnson, Richard Glover and Denzel Mooney. Each of these young men are prepared to be consistent contributors that will aid in the optimistic surge for change in the program. My expectation of these guys is for them to serve as informal leaders, and help the new players adapt to the rigorous demand of the CIAA basketball season. More importantly serve as ambassadors for the program and Lincoln University at large. 5. The CIAA is such a tough conference. What do you expect from your team in Northern Division play, but overall against conference foes? As a program we have come to understand the tough and competitive natural of the CIAA. Last season, we only won one Northern Division game, which I expect to improve upon that effort this season. The Northern Division will be the toughest in the CIAA this season but we expect to be in the mix of the top half of the division. The program is in a phase of trying to earn the respect of our conference foes and that’s only accomplished by winning games. We have to demonstrate on a nightly bases Lincoln is NOT going to be at the cellar of this league every year. Our goal is to work in becoming a respectable program by winning on a more consistently. We will continue to get better and that you can count on as we move forward in our building process. Team motto, “Champions Under Construction”

John Hill

Head Coach Second Year • Greensboro College, 1990

J

ohn Hill enters his second year patrolling the Lincoln bench. Boasting eight years of Division II head-coaching experience and another 13 seasons as an assistant, Hill has an established ability to build programs into conference and national contenders. In his first year at Lincoln, he transformed Denzel Mooney into an All-Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association player. Mooney is the league’s reigning leading scorer, averaging 22.1 points per game. That figure also ranks No. 11 in all of Division II. Defensively, the Lions were among the most consistent in the nation. From 1998-2005, Hill served as head coach at two separate CIAA institutions and earned the distinction of being a rigorous recruiter that demanded character both athletically and academically. As the architect of memorable women’s basketball teams at Saint Paul’s College, he spearheaded the Lady Tigers development from a 2-22 team in his first year in 1998-99 to one that never dipped below .500, finishing the next year at 15-11 and 2000-2001 at 17-9. In his fourth and final season in Lawrenceville, Va., SPC went 17-11. Following that successful venture into women’s basketball, Hill took the head men’s basketball position at Virginia State University for the 2002-2003 season. In a 5-11 inaugural year, the Trojans upset No. 10 Shaw University. Over the next two seasons, VSU went 14-12 and 13-14 for a 32-37 including five victories over nationally ranked teams. “Lincoln University is in an ideal basketball location to recruit from metropolitan areas spanning from New York to Washington D.C. within a two-hour radius” Hill said. “No other CIAA school has that ability.” Two of Hill’s Saint Paul’s College teams won the CIAA Team Academic Award and one was honored by the NCAA. “I recognize as a leader, I have an obligation to explore all resources that will enhance the academic achievement of each student-athlete,” he said. “It is vital to generate a program atmosphere that fosters a winning attitude toward graduating and competing successfully in athletics.” After his stints as a head coach, he returned to the assistant capacity he occupied from 1990-1998 in order to gain additional insights from well-established programs. The last four seasons, he served under Shawn Walker as an assistant coach at Elizabeth City State University, where the Vikings earned bids to the NCAA Tournament in 2006 and 2007, won the CIAA Men’s Basketball Championship in 2007, and this past year, ECSU finished as runners-up. The teams accumulated a 74-42 record including back-to-back 20-win seasons in 2007 and 2008 while housing three all-conference players. Highlighting the group were two-time CIAA Player of the Year Anthony Hilliard and 2009-10 CIAA Rookie of the Year Angelo Sharpless. Prior to his time at Elizabeth City State, he spent the 2005-06 season as an assistant at national power California University of Pa. In a 17-11 season, the Vulcans earned a No. 9 ranking in the East Region and the first NCAA bid of Hill’s career. From 1990-1998, he served as an assistant men’s basketball coach beginning with his alma mater Greensboro College (1990-92) before moving on to Bloomfield College (1992-93), Kean University (1993-95) and Winston-Salem State University (1995-1998). Hill holds a bachelor’s of science degree in sociology and psychology from Greensboro College and a master of science in sport management from the California University of Pennsylvania. He is currently a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches, the Black Coaches Association and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.

The John Hill Philosophy I am committed to providing the best possible educational opportunity for each of my students. I recognize that intercollegiate athletics may provide some students with the most meaningful learning experience during their college careers. An important factor in the positive impact of such experiences is the quality of the coach. Technical knowledge is only a part of what it takes to be a successful coach. A coach has to be able to relate to and communicate with people in general and his students in particular. A coach must know what motivates each individual, and must understand each student’s reactions to varying circumstances. You cannot do this without being open minded, honest, and fair in your interactions with others. Students are developing human beings. As a coach, my primary responsibility is to guide the social, emotional and cognitive growth of my studentathletes. Contests and practice sessions will encourage the greatest individual development. Opportunities will be provided for students to learn the value of persistence, the necessity of fitness, the importance of competing within the rules, and the comradeship of small groups. Other benefits of intercollegiate competition are present. Many of these values - tolerance, sacrifice, unselfishness, determination, confidence, emotional control and discipline - are difficult to measure. Nonetheless, they are most often carried over into the student’s adult life. Lastly, participation in intercollegiate athletics should be enjoyable. The student-athletes should take pride in the opportunity to represent the University. Long after the scores have faded, the students should remember the people they played with and the unity of purpose they developed through working together. They should not cherish the honors or the statistics; what they should cherish are the relationships.

CIAA THE HISTORY OF THE CIAA

The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) was founded in 1912 as the Colored Intercollegiate Athletic Association and is the oldest African-American athletic conference in the nation. Although the membership has changed since 1912, the CIAA consists of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) spanning the east coast from Pennsylvania to North Carolina. The membership: Bowie State University, Chowan University, Elizabeth City State University, Fayetteville State University, Johnson C. Smith University, Lincoln University of Pennsylvania, Livingstone College, St. Augustine’s College, Shaw University, Virginia State University, Virginia Union University and Winston-Salem State University is comprised of both private and public colleges and universities with enrollments ranging from 1,100 to over 7,000 students. Currently, eighty percent of CIAA alumni reside in Maryland, North Carolina and Virginia. The CIAA is incorporated in the District of Columbia and is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization. The conference is headquartered in Hampton, Virginia and is governed by the twelve Presidents and Chancellors of its member institutions. The conference holds championships annually in the following sports: Men’s and Women’s Cross Country; Volleyball; Football; Men’s and Women’s Indoor and Outdoor Track; Men’s and Women’s Basketball; Women’s Bowling; Men’s and Women’s Tennis; Golf; Baseball and Softball. In addition to its outstanding basketball history, the CIAA pioneered the divisional conference football championship game format. In 1970, after dividing the conference into Northern and Southern Divisions, the CIAA played the first conference football championship game in college football history in Petersburg, Virginia. The first black college football game was also played between CIAA schools, Livingstone and Biddle (now Johnson C. Smith) in 1893. Academic success is a staple of the conference. The CIAA recognizes the academic achievement of its student-athletes annually by naming its top student-athletes to the Commissioner’s All-Academic Team. The conference also recognizes the Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year for student-athletes who have excelled on the field and in the classroom. CIAA student-athletes have achieved success in the professional ranks. Ben Wallace, former basketball standout from Virginia Union University, was named to the 2004 Olympic Team and was instrumental in helping the NBA Detroit Pistons win the 2004 NBA Championship. Charles Oakley also from Virginia Union has played with the Chicago Bulls, New York Knicks and Toronto Raptors. Darrell Armstrong of Fayetteville State University recently retired from the NBA New Jersey Nets and Ronald Murray of Shaw University currently plays with the NBA Chicago Bulls. Most recently, Greg Toler of St. Paul’s College was selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the 31st round of the 2009 NFL draft. Former CIAA alumni who found success in professional sports include Earl “The Pearl” Monroe (Winston-Salem State University), Sam Jones (North Carolina Central University), Earl Lloyd (West Virginia State University), and Bobby Dandridge (Norfolk State University). The late John McClendon and C.E. “Big House” Gaines are coaching legends and pioneers. CIAA alumni list boasts some of the country’s prominent leaders. They include: the late Reginald Lewis (the owner of the first black billion dollar business - Beatrice Foods); the late Maynard Jackson (first black mayor of Atlanta, GA); Douglas Wilder (first elected black governor - Virginia); Art Shell (the first black NFL head coach in the modern era); and Andrew Young (the first black United States Ambassador to the United Nations). The CIAA receives significant support from corporate America. Over the past ten years companies such as Alltel, Anheuser Busch, Bank of America, Coca-Cola USA, Food Lion and Ford Motor Corporation, Glaxo Smithkline, Geico, Nationwide Insurance, Nike, McDonald’s, Russell Athletic, the American Red Cross, the United States Army, Navy and Marine Corp have assisted the conference in securing $10.5 million in scholarship money for the member institutions and an additional $23 million for other championships and television. With the help of these sponsors, the CIAA can boast its position as the first NCAA Division II conference to have its tournament televised as part of Championship Week on the Entertainment Sports Programming Network (ESPN), the cable television giant. One of the nation’s premier sporting events is the annual CIAA Basketball Tournament. Touted as the third most attended basketball tournament among all NCAA divisions, the first tournament was a 2,000 seat sellout in Washington, D.C. The CIAA Tournament recorded consecutive sellouts in the 20,000 seat RBC Center, located in Raleigh, NC when the city was awarded the event in 2000 and 2003. The 2011 CIAA Tournament, in its sixth year in the “Queen City”, Charlotte, NC, boasted over 190,000 fans during the course of the week, while making an economic impact of over $44.3 million. Since the year 2000, the CIAA has generated over $266.06 million in economic impact for the state of North Carolina and over $16.5 million in overall scholarship dollars for CIAA member institutions. Tournament Week offers events for every social palate including parties, numerous educational and healthy-livings components, step shows and a battle of the bands. The men’s and women’s tournaments are held simultaneously and their respective championship games are on Saturday night. The CIAA has received national recognition by being featured in EBONY magazine for six consecutive years, USA Today (front page cover story) and in Essence magazine. The Tournament has also been an annual staple of the Steve Harvey and Tom Joyner Morning Shows. The CIAA Tournament is televised into more than 57 million homes nationwide. In 2005, the conference partnered with ESPN, which included coverage on ESPN Classic, ESPN Plus and ESPN In-Game. ESPN reaches over 99.5 million homes. For the 2010 tournament, the CIAA entered into a first-ever partnership with TV One, a television network that chronicles African-American culture and achievement, to broadcast the men’s quarterfinals and semifinal rounds. The CIAA is undoubtedly celebrated as a conference of “firsts”. Its innate spirit of ingenuity and innovation continues to keep the CIAA in the forefront; blazing trails for other conferences to follow. As the CIAA enters into 100 years of excellence in athletic competition, the conference and its member institutions continue to build on the rich and honorable traditions of its past; while providing leadership into the future.
