There is such a lot to do when planning a wedding and it can take a fair amount of time and money. This guide will be very helpful in making those plans. Your wedding day is hopefully the beginning of a happy and fulfilled life together. So, as you become caught up in all the planning, I have two simple ideas I’d like to share with you.
First, you and your partner will need each other to become the best people you can be. The more talented and successful you are as individuals, the more difficult it is to recognise your own basic need for others, and in marriage, for your partner to grow with you. The total commitment of a marriage – for better, for worse – is something given to us to help us learn how to love. We learn to love by loving another human being - even when we’d rather not and when it might be inconvenient - so that we can mature into the person we are made to be.
My second idea is simply: love needs to grow. More than 13m people watch reality TV shows like The X Factor, The Apprentice, Master Chef, The Choir, Strictly Come Dancing. Why are these shows so addictive? At its best, we enjoy seeing other people develop, but another reason is that they depict a journey; people learn more about themselves and those with whom they travel. The language of the journey is in fact borrowed from the Christian tradition in which life is viewed as a pilgrimage towards God. You are both about to embark on the next stage of the journey: to become the best people you can be. It’s not a journey towards fame, or money, but a journey towards life.
I hope you enjoy the beginning of your journey – the wedding day itself, then moving forward into a happy and fulfilled married life together. Emily Brown

YOUR CHURCH WEDDING
Marrying in Church
There’s nothing like the beautiful backdrop of your local church to really make your wedding day special. Here, The Church of England’s Sandra Millar discusses the implications of marrying in the Dioceses of Lincoln or Peterborough...
In 2018, there will be around 45,000 couples who will decide to make timeless vows in a very special place – a Church of England church. Couples choose to marry in a church for lots of different reasons and there are some things about a church wedding that you just can’t get anywhere else.
Research shows couples believe that getting married is one of the most serious decisions you can make, and the unique vows made in a church wedding reflect the strength of that commitment. The commitment made to each other, supported by God’s blessing and the love and prayers of friends and family gathered on the day, make a strong foundation for a lifetime of love.
For many couples it is the church building itself that shapes the decision about where to have the ceremony – whether old or new, intimate or grand, the Church of England’s 16,000 churches are some of the nation’s most stunning wedding venues, with two-thirds being listed buildings.
The distinctive atmosphere and the feeling that this is a ‘peaceful’ or ‘serene’ place means that for some, the church simply seems like the ‘proper’ place to get married, offering a particularly special experience.
Churches are not only places of outstanding beauty; many of them also hold centuries of history. For some couples there may have been several generations from the same family marrying there. For others, the sense of standing in the place where countless couples have stood before feels like they’re becoming part of history itself, the bigger plan, and their unique story becomes part of the church’s story in that place.
six months or more, have parents who currently live in the parish, or have parents or grandparents who got married in the church, then they can marry at that church.
The vows, the building, and the timeless atmosphere all add a spiritual dimension to the wedding, something that many couples value, even if they don’t hold defined ‘religious’ beliefs or much experience of church-going.
The ceremony includes God’s blessing and prayers for help and guidance through the years ahead, as well as special hymns and readings. Neither the bride or the groom are required to be baptised or confirmed to be married in The Church of England, nor even to be regular churchgoers, although they will always be welcome. All that is required legally is one of seven recognised connections with the church where the wedding is to be held. So, if either the bride or groom-to-be live in the church’s parish, have lived in the parish previously for
“Wherever possible, churches want to say ‘yes’ to couples who want to get married in church.”
If either the bride or groom was baptised or prepared for confirmation in the church, or have attended the church’s services for over six months, that also connects them. Any one of these connections with a particular church will count, so for one couple, there could be quite a few different churches to choose from.
The decision to get married is one of life’s big moments – and big decisions often lead to big thoughts and questions. Planning the wedding day can become stressful, and during the months of getting ready, the church will be there for the couple. Sometimes taking space to join worship gives time to reflect, and many churches will also offer special times for couples to think about the vows and all that being married will mean for them. After all, the wedding day is only the beginning!
The Revd., Sandra Millar, Head of Church of England Life Events said: “Wherever possible, churches want to say ‘yes’ to couples who want to get married in church. It’s such a privilege to be part of this special moment in each couple’s life, and every wedding will be different.” “That’s one of the unique things about marrying in a church – it will be personal and meaningful, from the very first meeting with the vicar to the day itself and beyond. We know from research that couples really love this about a church wedding.” >>

- CHURCH WEDDINGS -
YOUR MATCH, MADE IN HEAVEN SEVEN STEPS TO CHURCH 1. Find a Church: Find your local church and the vicar’s contact details.
2. Call the Vicar: Let your vicar know your good news as soon as you can and the three of you can fix a time to discuss what happens next.
3. Space to Think: Before your wedding, your vicar may invite you to an event to help prepare you for married life together. Many couples appreciate the time and space to think about the vows and the difference they will make.
One couple who married within the Diocese of Lincoln recently said: “Over the two years of planning, the vicar, Nick, took a lot of time and effort to get to know us properly. On the day, everything he said was so personal to us – how we found each other and what we were all about as a couple. It wasn’t ‘just another wedding.’ Nick helped us make it wonderful and we so appreciate everything he did. I wish we could live that day all over again!”
The vicar will do all they can to support the couple in planning their ceremony, from choosing hymns and readings to guiding them through the legal preparations.
Most church weddings will be straightforward, but complications can occur if either the bride or groom are nationals of a country that is outside the EEA, or if one or both of them has divorce in their past.
These are not necessarily barriers, but there will be some additional paperwork, and depending on the circumstances, there can still be a way forward. The vicar will be open to a discussion and will advise, and there’s also lots of helpful advice and information on www.yourchurchwedding.org – whether you are just engaged, close to the wedding day, or have a special role in the ceremony. 18
4. Banns: Banns are announcements in church of your intention to marry and a chance for anyone to put forward a reason why the marriage may not lawfully take place. On these occasions, everyone in your church will also be praying for you. It can be very special and moving, so do go along if you can. 5. Rehearsal: As you get closer to your wedding day, perhaps a day or two before, you will usually have the opportunity to rehearse the ceremony with those who are involved.
For couples already planning a church wedding, the online Ceremony Planner is a great help with choosing hymns and readings – there are extracts of hymns to listen to as well as all the lyrics of some of the most well-loved hymn choices for weddings. There is a good selection of readings too.
“A wedding day is so very special. It should be happy, it should be joyful – and above all it should reflect the love that is at the heart of every marriage. Couples can just ask a church about their hopes and dreams for their wedding day. They may be surprised at the choices open to them – and discover that the spiritual depth of a church wedding can be part of their story too,” adds Sandra. n Visit www.achurchnearyou.com to find a church near you, and plan your Church of England ceremony at www.ceremonyplanner.yourchurchwedding.org.
6. The Big Day: Your vicar will do all he or she can to make the day a personal, meaningful and spiritual experience for you and your guests.
7. First Anniversary and Beyond: Your local church will always be there for you throughout your marriage if you need it. Even if your local church is not the place where you married, they would be delighted to mark your first anniversary by praying for you both. All you have to do is ask. n

Questions to Ask
IN THE BRIDAL SHOP HOW MANY FITTINGS WILL I HAVE?
q
WHAT SHOULD I BRING WITH ME?
q
Usually you’ll have an initial fitting, then a further one after the changes have been done. The average amount of fittings is two to three. Because of the amount of fittings, it’s worth looking for dresses well in advance of the wedding day. You want to feel confident when you try on dresses. some bridal shops will have strapless bras, heels and jewellery for you to try on with your dress but some may not. Make sure to bring an open mind too! you may surprise yourself with the dress you finally decide on. CAN I BRING MY MUM AND FRIENDS?
q
WHAT EXPERIENCE DO YOU HAVE?
q
It’s always worth asking this question. of course you want your friends and family there with you on the day, but some bridal shops may not have the space for you to do this. If you have a busy lifestyle, it might also be worth asking if they do late evening fittings. It’s less busy at this time so you’ll be able to bring friends.
WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE PRICE?
q
CAN I BRING ALONG A CAMERA?
q
When you buy a wedding dress, you try on the sizes they have in store. They then order that dress closest to your size and alter it to fit. Make sure you find out how much the alteration will cost; some bridal shops include alterations in the price but watch out for these additional costs. A lot of bridal shops surprisingly don’t allow this, but it’s important you ask so you can look over the pictures later and compare them to other styles you liked in different stores. If they don’t allow you to bring a camera or take photos, take a note of the name of the designer and the dress name or number so you can look the style up later online and save them that way. n
If the store is in the Retail Bridal Association, it means the business has been running for more than five years and its standards are checked annually. Check if the seamstress is qualified. Make sure you’re visiting a store with good credentials.
MONEY SAVING TIPS
n The number one rule when it comes to buying
wedding dresses is DO NOT try on a wedding dress that’s over your budget. You either blow your budget or break your own heart! n As a rule of thumb, the more intricate the design, the more it will cost so opt for simpler styles. n Wear your mother’s wedding dress. It puts a personal touch on the day and you save around £1,000. You could equally buy from a pre-owned site. They’ve only worn it once! n Shop at the right time. Like the fashion industry, there are busy times and not so busy times, so get the late summer and winter sales and visit wedding shows for show deals.

Checklist The Bride’s
Make sure you’ve checked all of these things off your list! 1. Sleep You have to get a good night’s sleep before the wedding so try to relax, forget about everything, and get some beauty sleep! 4. Final Touches Reapply lipstick, double check your hair and have one last look before walking down the aisle.
5. Wine and Dine People will want to talk to you constantly throughout the day, so make sure you have time to wine and dine and enjoy yourself with your new husband. 7. Thank You’s The chances are, your friends and family helped out with the wedding planning. Make sure you know who helped, and send out thank you cards after the ceremony and honeymoon.
9. Comfy Shoes Put some comfy shoes under your table at your wedding breakfast - you’ll thank us later!
2. Breakfast You’ve got hours before the ceremony, and you don’t want your vows to be interrupted by a grumbling tummy!
3. Have Fun! Remember to have fun! This is the best day of your life, it will do you no good to be worrying about little details that aren’t going to plan. 6. Tears Arm yourself with tissues. There’s no such thing as a dry-eyed bride and you don’t want mascara tears!
8. Give Yourself Time It’s a woman’s prerogative to spend hours getting ready, especially on their wedding day! Make sure you’ve given yourself and your bridal party plenty of time to get ready in the morning. 10. Essentials Finally, never forget a little bag of essentials - perhaps a bag a bridesmaid can look after - with essentials to look fabulous all day.

Afternoon Tea For Two Vintage styles are becoming increasingly popular in the wedding world, and just a quick glance at Kathryn Edwards’s photographs goes to show how beautiful this theme can be. From lilac bridesmaid dresses to vintage ice cream trucks, this styled shoot is perfect inspiration for a tea party wedding. Photographer: Kathryn Edwards Photography, 07732 222876, www.kathrynedwardsphotography.com.
Traditional can be boring. Almost every bride wants a traditional big white wedding, but traditional, I regret to say, can be boring for your guests.
If you want a wedding day that will be remembered by your guests for years to come, go for a themed wedding.
Little ideas to suit a theme, like an ice cream truck or vintage suitcases or even vintage cutlery and glasses at the tables, will make your guests smile.
Make the theme something you’re truly passionate about, something you love. It may be the glitz and glamour of the 20s or perhaps you’d like a festival vibe. If it’s
40
vintage you’re into, this styled shoot is the perfect form of inspiration.
The suppliers that were used in this shoot cater for weddings across the whole of the East Midlands based in and around Rutland and Lincolnshire.
First of all the photographer, Kathryn Edwards, the organiser of the shoot, clearly knows what she’s doing. The photos are simply fantastic and a perfect example of her work.
As far as a love for all things vintage goes, Darby and Joan is a company that can offer an impressive selection of props, china and a 1966 VW Campervan for your day.
The dresses from dress company Frock aren’t just beautiful but handmade. Frock offers made-to-measure dresses, cut out and made on the premises. Rebecca from Floraldeco has a real passion for floral design and loves creating a unique style for each of her couples.
We particularly love the headpieces in this shoot. They come from Klaire Van Elton who has an eye for design and detail.
To finish off the tea party theme, Yummy Little Cakes provided dainty macarons and buttercream cakes in pastel colours. Over the page, we have a full list of the suppliers who contributed.

VENUES
Where to hold the
WEDDING IT’S A DECISION THAT’S FUNDAMENTAL TO YOUR WEDDING - WHERE TO HOLD THE RECEPTION. HERE WE’RE PROVIDING SOME GREAT INSPIRATION WITH SOME TRADITIONAL, MODERN AND SOME QUIRKY WEDDING VENUES TOO... Choosing your venue is one of the biggest but also one of the most subjective - and therefore one of the trickiest - decisions you can make when planning your wedding.
Competition is strong but every couple - and therefore every wedding - is unique, so there’s no ‘one size fits all’ venue that suits all weddings. The advice, therefore, has to be to ensure you view as many as possible before making your choice.
In Lincoln, a visit to the city’s Bailgate Wedding Fair is advisable; held every February and October, five venues all take part enabling you to see not just the venues themselves, but to meet other suppliers across uphill Lincoln too.
THE CITY OF LINCOLN
The city’s wedding venues all offer a slightly different look and feel for your wedding, so viewing each of our five suggested Lincoln wedding venues (opposite) is recommended.
Just outside of the city is Doddington Hall. The stately home is owned by James & Claire Birch, and offers a beautiful setting including breathtaking grounds and versatile wedding packages.
Another quirky venue just outside Lincoln is The Pyewipe Inn at Saxilby. With a riverside 44
MARQUEES, BARNS & TIPI WEDDINGS...
Rural barns or marquees are not simply a great backdrop for rustic weddings, they’re also really versatile and can be configured or decorated to meet your needs. Our tips are The Granary near Boston; it’s a Grade II listed barn with period features like a vaulted roof and exposed beams. Meanwhile, tipis at Lincoln’s Pyewipe, Grantham’s Buckminster Barn’s or Howell Events, near Sleaford are perfect for quirky weddings; the latter provides a rural setting adjacent to a working farm & Saxon church. n
Main: Petwood Hotel. Below: Branston Hall. Below/Right: The gardens at The Poachers Country Inn. Circle: Doubletree by Hilton.
location, this quality pub restaurant offers both conventional function rooms, but also its tipi-based weddings for those seeking something quirky and adaptable. However, Lincoln is just one place for your wedding. If you’re keen to marry elsewhere, what are the options?
NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE
In the North and North East of the county, consider Stallingborough Grange Hotel, which offers a romantic wedding in an C18th thatched country house hotel. With its thatched roof and pretty garden with koi pond, it’s great for photos.
Just over the Humber is The Deep Aquarium in Hull - one of our three ‘unusual’ wedding venue tips (see over), or the Cave Castle Country Club in the East Riding with its crenellated roof and beautiful grounds.

IN THE CITY OF
LINCOLN
THESE FOUR MUST-VIEW WEDDING VENUES IN LINCOLN ARE ALL UNIQUE & APPEALING
“OUR ADVICE IS TO ATTEND AS MANY WEDDING FAIRS AS POSSIBLE AND TO SEE AS MANY VENUES AS YOU CAN - YOU’LL GAIN SOME GREAT IDEAS FOR YOUR WEDDING STYLING TOO...” MID-LINCOLNSHIRE
If you’re looking to marry South of Lincoln, you’re spoilt for choice too, and one of Lincolnshire’s most popular wedding venues is Woodhall Spa’s Petwood Hotel.
n The Stately Home One: Meanwhile Branston Hall is a complete contrast, a stately home built in 1885 and offering function room and marquee weddings.
Beautifully refurbished gardens including the Temple of Atlanta provide space for an outdoor wedding ceremony and there are several function rooms accommodating all different sizes of weddings.
Also in Woodhall Spa is the Dower House Hotel. With true Edwardian charm, five function rooms, and a stone folly, plus neat grounds for your photos. The hotel was refurbished to the tune of £2m less than a decade ago, so it’s the perfect blend of traditional character and modern facilities.
If you’re based near Sleaford, consider the family-owned Carre Arms, with its Victorian conservatory and courtyard offering a wealth of light.
Boston’s Green Welly Inns meanwhile, has a trio of wedding venues in its portfolio including The Poachers Country Inn.
n The Modern One: Lincoln’s Doubletree by Hilton offers spacious function rooms and great views over the Brayford Pool.
Offering bespoke packages for between 50 and 200 people, and 14 rooms and private landscaped gardens plus a ‘blank canvas’ function suite, it’s adaptable to whatever size and style of wedding you’re hosting.
SOUTH LINCOLNSHIRE
In the South of the county, one venue to consider is Grantham’s Irnham Hall. With a newly refurbished summer house and walled garden, the venue also enjoys a convenient location close to the A1, so if you’ve guests travelling from out of the area, access is a cinch. >>
n The Great Value One: The Lincoln Hotel provides a choice of three wedding packages, plus generous discounts for out of season or midweek weddings, plus a convenient location in the centre of the city.
n The Versatile One: Lincoln White Hart, in the Bailgate, offers funky contemporary décor, a choice of function rooms and off-peak discounts too.

>> Also in the south of the county, Bourne’s Toft County House Hotel is family owned and has two reception rooms plus the option of a marquee. Its location adjacent to the hotel’s golf course provides a great backdrop for photos and first class hospitality.
NEWARK
Lincolnshire has, of course, also adopted Newark on Trent as its own, and so it would be remiss of us not to recommend a couple of venues in the town too.
The Ram on Castle Gate was refurbished a couple of years ago, and provides an exceptional first floor function room, making it a convenient and surprisingly spacious in-town wedding venue. And finally, Farndon Boathouse just five minutes or so from the town provides a contemporary riverside location with space for up to 100 guests. n
Finding your Venue
Visit www.ukbride.co.uk, which has a range of venues to search through and view, as well as details of upcoming wedding fairs, too.
Toft Country House Hotel, Bourne.
Something Completely Different: Wedding venues that are slightly more unusual...
n The Deep, Hull: OK, so this isn’t strictly a Lincolnshire venue, but it’s worthy of note simply because it’s so unusual! Marry ‘under the ocean’ at Hull’s Deep, a completely unique - and eco-friendly - wedding venue.
46
n Brewery: Marry in a local brewery, such as Batemans Brewery’s Visitor Centre, set in a windmill on Salem Bridge in Wainfleet or Newark’s Pheasantry Brewery (pictured above), a microbrewery which opened in June 2012.
n Make History: Museums, castles and other heritage buildings are incredible backdrops. Boston’s Guildhall lets couples use its stunning banqueting hall, whilst Oakham Castle and Lincoln Castle are also available to couples.

CHECKLIST
Questions to Ask
WHEN VISITING A VENUE HOW MANY DOES IT ACCOMMODATE?
q
WHAT ARE THE FULL COSTS/EXTRA FEES?
q
DO YOU OFFER CATERING?
q
You need to find out how many people your venue can accommodate. The venue will be one of the first things you organise, and wedding plans change constantly, so even if you know you’re having a small number of guests, ask this question. It might only accommodate for 20 and you want 80.
Unfortunately, many venues have hidden costs that you really need to be aware of. Ask about the rental fee, cancellation policy, the payment plan, overtime fee and everything else you feel they might charge you for. This avoids any nasty surprises and gets all the awkward questions out of the way.
You may have already arranged for a wedding caterer, but it’s still worth checking if the venue supply one. It may be a lot cheaper or better quality. It’s good to keep your options open. Remember to ask about hidden fees here too! some venues have a ‘corkage’ fee if you bring your own alcohol. If you hire your own caterers, ask if there are kitchen facilities available - if caterers have to bring in their own refrigerators and ovens, they might charge extra.
MONEY SAVING TIPS n Don’t get married on a Saturday. This is the easiest
way to save money on your wedding. Not only does it cut the costs down on the venue, but all of your suppliers. Have it on a Friday!
n Have your ceremony and reception in the same
place, maybe in the same room. It makes the venue cheaper and you only need one load of flowers.
n Get married in a register office. If you’re not too worried about a big ceremony, this is a good way to save money.
n Book well in advance. If you take your time
and have a really long engagement, the monthly payments are easier to manage and you can do loads more research and comparison.
60
WHAT DATES ARE AVAILABLE?
q
DO YOU HAVE A LIST OF SUPPLIERS?
q
CAN WE SETUP THE DAY BEFORE?
q
If you have your heart set on a particular date and your venue is available on that day, still ask this question. you might discover they’re available on a bank holiday weekend or the price is considerably better on a different day. Weigh up all your options. Sometimes venues will have a list of ‘preferred’ or ‘recommended’ suppliers. It’s important for your suppliers to work well together so it might be worth referring to this as much as possible. Also, if your venue recommends them, they are probably good suppliers to use.
This is a question your suppliers may ask you. Find out when you first book with your venue, and plan your day logically in your head. Ask them about how the whole process works. n

SEASONS Weddings: The Four
WHETHER YOU HAVE YOUR HEART SET ON A SPRING WEDDING, YOU LIKE THE IDEA OF A MID-SUMMER WEDDING OR YOU’D LIKE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OFF-SEASON DISCOUNTS AND HOST A WINTER WEDDING, EACH SEASON HAS A CHARM ALL OF ITS OWN. HERE, WE’VE THEMES AND IDEAS FOR EVERY DIFFERENT SEASON... Words & Themes: Tilly Wilkinson.

Softer Spring Style Spring has a more delicate style with fresh botanicals and flower power...
AU NATUREL Whites & Greens
This has to be one of our favourite wedding trends set for 2018. It’s a cross between the traditional white wedding and the more relaxed informal weddings we see more of today. The soft green colours against the white backgrounds make your wedding look so fresh and this definitely suits the season of spring. 66
NEW - B&G LINCS 2018 Ad on MANDY.qxp 08/12/2017 09:50 Page 67
- SPRING -
EAsTER
Pastel Colours
In conjunction with Easter, pastel colours are popular in spring. Soft greens, pinks, purples and blues often found on the brightly coloured eggs you see in this season tend to reflect on the colour schemes of weddings. As weddings are becoming more informal, more pastel colours are being used rather than one specific shade.
RoyAL AFFAIR Baby Blue & Pink
Sticking to tradition is becoming less and less common, but if this is something that’s important to you, despite wanting your wedding to stay current, go for a royal theme. It may cost a little more than normal, but enjoying afternoon tea, a wedding in a stately home and royal-styled wedding photos is traditional and modern. 67
NEW - B&G LINCS 2018 Ad on MANDY.qxp 08/12/2017 09:51 Page 68
Golden Summer If you’re having a summer wedding, we suggest bright colours and glitter...
GLITTERATI Golds & silvers
Extending from the royal wedding you can enjoy in spring, if you want a high society wedding in summer, go for glitz & glamour. Touches of gold and silver and a wedding full of sparkle and shine will really stick in your guests’ memory. Use sequin runners for tables and dress your bridesmaids in complete sparkle. 68
NEW - B&G LINCS 2018 Ad on MANDY.qxp 08/12/2017 09:51 Page 69
- SUMMER -
LA FIEsTA
Bright Colours
If you’re less bothered about tradition and more interested in having a really great time with all of your friends and family, through a festival wedding! Fill it full of colours, get a great band, have it outside (if you’re feeling brave) and wear a flower crown. This can be quite affordable; get friends and family to help out.
FRENCH FANCy Pinks & Roses
Instead of opting for a simple pink colour scheme, why not have a French themed one? It’s home to the city of love and it means you can have a cheese wedding cake and table names with French words or city names. If you need any more inspiration, watch the film ‘Bridesmaids!’ Although perhaps don’t give away puppies as favours... 69

Autumn Romance Autumn is about going for darker colours like our monochrome theme...
RED BERRIEs Purples & Reds
Rich reds and dark purples have made their way into the most popular themes for 2018’s brides. The contrast to other themes brides may opt for, make this theme so refreshing. It really suits the autumn and winter season although this is a perennial theme; it would look great in summer too. 72

MONOCHROME Blacks & Whites
Make your wedding a black tie event in autumn and go for a monochrome theme. There’s a common myth that you can’t wear black to a wedding but we think black and white weddings look amazing! Gold and silver go well with this theme as Rosalind Miller’s cake above proves. Be daring and go for a black wedding dress!
FALLEN LEAVES Oranges & Browns
The most popular theme for an autumn wedding is autumn colours. Undoubtedly, your wedding will suit the surroundings and you can get some really beautiful wedding photos with this theme. We advise you to have a barn wedding if you’re going all out autumnal and decorate your tables with fallen leaves and wood. 73

Winter Wonderland If you’re expecting snow on your wedding day, choose these schemes...
FEsTIVE CHEER Reds & Greens
When you think about a winter wedding, the first thing that comes to mind is Christmas. Why not have a Christmas themed wedding? It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and it will make your day truly magical. Fill it with mistletoe! It also means you can have a full Christmas dinner on your wedding day. 74

soMETHING BLUE
Navy & Cobalt
Often matched with pink or completely themed around navy, our ‘Something Blue’ theme is ideal for winter. It stands out strikingly on a snowy backdrop and is a great colour often associated with this time of year. Navy bridesmaids dresses also look really classy. This is also a theme that you could use in other seasons.
LET IT sNoW Whites & Creams
The closest to a traditional theme, whites and cream-coloured weddings look really pretty in winter. This theme is ideal if it doesn’t snow during the festive season; you could use fake snow on tables or centrepieces full of white twigs. The Pretty Cake Company (left) has a really beautiful white cake that could suit winter or spring. 75

PHOTOGRAPHY AND VIDEO
Capturing your Day
Once the cake is reduced to crumbs and the flowers look tired, your wedding photographs are the record of the day you planned and enjoyed. It’s imperative, then, that a professional has captured every element of your day...
Photography is about freezing a moment in time. And never is that a more necessary skill than on your wedding day, a day which, we’re afraid to say, will fly by all too quickly.
Traditionally, wedding photography was about simply achieving formally posed images of your close family and attendants, but now it’s about much more; recording for posterity close-up shots of table decorations, the flowers and cake... documenting all of the elements of your wedding you’ve painstakingly curated. Trust Me, I’m a Professional...
The necessity of preserving your day makes it all the more necessary to entrust your big day to a professional. Ironically, having just pointed out the necessity of hiring a good photographer, it also falls upon us to warn of the potential pitfalls that the democratisation of photography has also caused. A few years ago, some brides thought that disposable cameras on guests’ tables would yield plenty of photos and eliminate the need to hire a professional. Alas, that’s not the case!
Today’s digital cameras are so commonplace that many enthusiastic amateurs - usually relatives - make well-meaning offers to save brides cash and take on the task of their wedding photography. Technical Skills, Soft Skills...
But no matter how good the camera, there’s no substitute for a professional photographer; one who’s absolutely au fait with their equipment and with the technicalities of photography, but also in possession of the soft skills that wedding photographers need. 82
CHOOSE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER WHAT TO CONSIDER Do you have backup equipment? Backup camera bodies, cards, flash guns etc., to guard against failure.
Have you shot a wedding at our venue before? It’s better for a photographer to be familiar with the location. Do you shoot alone? A photographer with a second shooter, or a husband and wife team, can capture more images or take shots simultaneously. Are you insured? e.g.: Against equipment theft, injury etc?
How will I get my images on a USB, DVD, or in an album... and will I own the copyright?
How much post-production will you put into our wedding and approximately how many images will I receive? How quickly will I receive my images after the day?
Can I provide you with a list of my ‘must have’ shots e.g: to make sure everyone is included in the formal shots?
A professional will have the experience and skill to work around bright sunshine and shadows or overcast days. They’ll have a wet weather plan and they’ll be able to use flash properly and capture tricky shots like the confetti toss.
Many of these skills can evade a photographer, but the real difference is a professional’s ability to deal with the wedding party and wedding guests diplomatically and professionally on the day.
How to Choose a Photographer...
Over the page we’ve photographers from around the county, and you’ll find others on wedding planning websites like UKbride. Decent photographers will invite you along for a consultation and may even offer an engagement shoot. They’ll discuss your budget, the style of photography and options for supplying digital files and albums.
It’s imperative you feel comfortable with your photographer, and that you ‘click’ with them - no pun intended. Husband and wife photographers usually get good results following the groom and bride on the morning of your wedding to capture the build-up. Make sure you view the photographer’s portfolio and understand whether their coverage is traditional, or reportage - candid and unobtrusive.
Budgets range from £500-£2,000 for photographers and depend on the duration of coverage on the day and how they supply images. Be wary, though, of photographers who offer ‘same day’ images - doing so sounds like a selling point, but the reality is that if you obtain your images on the day, they won’t have had the post-production editing which creates great images from ones that are merely good! n

GIRLS
ON FILM A VIDEOGRAPHER IS JUST AS ESSENTIAL AS A WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER
Wedding photography and videography are not interchangeable disciplines. Wedding photography can be more posed, more deliberate, whilst videography can capture things on the day you may have missed; as well as the sounds and the laughter. If your budget will stretch to it, we’ll ALWAYS recommend a videographer and a photographer working side by side on your wedding day. Look for one affiliated with institutions like the Institute of Videographers, and ensure you’re clear about the duration of the finished video, that your professional will obtain the necessary copyright for any backing tracks, and that they’re fully insured. When you’re watching your wedding video years after, you’ll be glad you made the investment, which will typically be in the region of £1,000. n

CAKE
TEN SIMPLE CAKE
DECORATIONS Now on to the most important part about wedding planning - cake! Whether you’re having one, two, three tiers or more, here are the cake trends for 2018. Find one that fits your wedding theme...
2. Au Naturel For an Au Naturel theme, ask your cake maker for a stark white coloured cake and decorate with botanicals and succulents. This is so classy and a relaxed take on a traditional wedding cake.
4. Fiesta If you’re having a party wedding, go colour crazy. Theme it around festival colours like bright oranges and pinks, ask your cake maker if she can style the colours like confetti and top with a flower made from icing.
86
1. Something Blue If you’re having a blue coloured cake, ‘less is more’ when it comes to decorations. We recommend a small array of real flowers or icing flowers depending on the skills of your cake maker; if it’s a relative, decorate with real flowers! 3. Easter Pastels To suit a easter-themed pastel coloured wedding, introduce a number of pastel colours into the design of your cake. Buttercream is ideal for this theme and it would suit a tall single tier. Decorate with a few flowers or personalise.
5. Chocoholics If you’re a fellow chocoholic and it’s vital to you to have at least one chocolate tier, we recommend you show it off. Everyone loves chocolate! Have a naked cake with strawberry buttercream and decorate it with real flowers. This will save you money too as it’s less sugarcraft and detail.
NEW - B&G LINCS 2018 Ad on MANDY.qxp 08/12/2017 09:54 Page 87
6. Grecian Theme If you’re having a Grecian dress, why not opt for a Grecian cake? This is another take on our ‘Au Naturel’ cake. Use soft green tones and add a touch of colour with lavender. Make this sugar craft lavender if you want a vibrant colour.
9. Naked Cake If you’re looking to save money, the best thing to do is to have a naked cake as it takes the cost of detail and time away from the cake maker. Decorate with berries for a summer wedding. 10. Geometric If you want to be really on trend, go for a geometric pattern. We’re seeing more and more cakes at weddings that are incredibly decorated to look like volcanic crystal rocks. We like this style, but to make it a little more feminine, perhaps use your birth crystal or stone and add a geometric pattern to the icing.
7. Ruffled Cake Add ruffles to your cake for texture and to match your dress if this also features ruffles. If you’re having a smaller cake too, this distracts the eye a little more. 8. Pretty in Pink If your wedding has a pink colour scheme, your cake is the chance to really show this off and create a centrepiece of pink. Go all out and make all the elements of your cake feature a shade of pink.
Cake & Carnations...
Your wedding bouquet isn’t the only part of your big day that calls for flowers, so why not add fresh buds to your wedding cake? Perhaps dahlias suit your style or roses - even peonies. No matter what flower you choose to incorporate, fresh florals add a touch of elegance and romance to your cake. It’s also a great way of tying your wedding décor in with your wedding cake decoration. The cake display and the flowers used can be exactly like your bouquets. It’s also a fantastic idea if you’re really struggling on ideas to decorate your wedding cake. Most cake makers would’ve created a cake working with a florist, and if they’re suggested suppliers by your venue, it’s almost guaranteed. n

CHECKLIST
Questions to Ask
YOUR WEDDING CAKE ARTIST HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN BUSINESS?
q
HOW SOON WILL YOU BAKE MY CAKE?
q
The first indication to tell you if someone is an experienced baker is how long they’ve been in business. This question is your background check. It also indicates whether they’re just good at baking or whether they know how to construct and transport cake. If the cake maker is making multiple cakes for a weekend, they chill or freeze the layers before assembling closer to the wedding. Make sure they’re not baking the cake too far in advance; if a cake is frozen for too long, it can dry the layers out. IS TASTING INCLUDED IN OUR FEE?
q
Some cake makers will charge for cake tasting sessions. This will be included in your final cost so make sure you’re aware of this hidden cost before choosing them. It’s also worth asking if they offer a consultation tasting session or just a tasting session; a consultation allows you to discuss your design ideas with them. CAN YOU WORK WITH OUR FLORIST?
q
Double check if the cake maker is happy to work with your florist. The cake maker will bring an undecorated cake to the venue and your florist will then dress it.
MONEY SAVING TIPS n The easiest way to save money on your cake is
having a smaller cake. The smaller the cake, the smaller the cost. n Forget the fondant. Go for buttercream. This will save you loads of money as it’s less labour intensive for the cake maker and less expensive for them. n DIY your cake toppers. Instead of asking for an intricate design, buy cake toppers or try to make one yourself. This will personalise your cake too. n This may seem a strange idea, but you can use fake foam tiers. Your cake maker will work with you to produce a beautifully iced cake with half to slice and half as presentation.
88
HOW DO YOU PRICE YOUR CAKES?
q
HOW DO YOU DELIVER THE CAKE?
q
CAN YOU CREATE CUSTOM CAKES?
q
Most bakers will charge you per serving (how many slices your cake will make), but some will charge on the amount of detail, number of tiers or the amount of time it will take. you may get a completely bespoke price depending on your order. It’s worth knowing just in case you need to cut costs. This is surprisingly one of the most important parts of a cake maker’s job. you need to know what will happen if the cake is damaged in transit, how they’re taking the cake to you, when, and you need to make sure your cake table is ready for it! Some bakers will only work from a set selection of designs with few variations. If you want a really personal or unique cake, it’s worth asking before you get into the design process having already signed the contract.

Flower Power...
Finding your Florist Find a local florist on www.UKbride.co.uk, or at www.interflora.co.uk, which represents 1,300 expert florists nationally.
Flowers are not only naturally beautiful, they’re an incredibly versatile resource for decorating the church, reception, your wedding breakfast tables and of course, for carrying through your colour Images: Interflora. scheme to bouquets and buttonholes...
Don’t underestimate flower power when it comes to implementing your chosen wedding theme. From bridal bouquets to church arrangements and buttonholes, we all expect to see a degree of fancy floristry at a wedding, but by including flowers on your chair covers and tables, for example, you’ll be able to really style your wedding and create beautiful props for your formal photos too. Top: Tall table arrangements give height in old venues with lofty ceilings, and ensure guests on opposite sides of a table
92
can still see one another. Left: Use flowers to decorate your cake; consider single colour and ombre colour schemes.
Seek out a really good independent florist and budget between £500 and £1,500 for their skills. Approach them with an idea of your colour scheme, the date of your wedding and the style you’re seeking, taking any colour swatches with you.
Generally, all flowers are available all year round, but those which are native and in season - i.e.: those which won’t need to be imported - will prove the best value. Combine expensive ‘best’ flowers with filler foliage, and cheaper blooms to achieve both bulk and luxury carrying though your colour scheme. n

- FLOWERS -
THROUGH THE
SEASONS
Top: Trailing bridal bouquets look dramatic. Consider floral ‘frames’ for photos, or around doorways and table plans. Top/Right: Don’t dismiss quirky foliage such as wheat, shown here, for a rustic look... or thistles for winter weddings.
Above: This blue and white arrangement has been created with irises and peonies. Hand-tied arrangements can look loose and relaxed, or tighter and more formal. Left: Don’t forget buttonholes for the groomsmen. Ideas and further wedding inspiration at Interflora.
Early Spring: Use bowls of hyacinths or primula on your tables, violets and even cheaper, abundantly available flowers like narcissi. Mid-Late Spring: Lily of the valley, lilacs, anemones, dicentra and freesias, plus irises and tulips. Summer: Carnations are abundant and inexpensive, as are peonies. Lavender is exquisite for rustic weddings, whilst phlox is a useful native flower. Roses are plentiful and versatile, but can be expensive, whilst gypsophila is a versatile filler flower for bulking out your posies and arrangements. Hydrangeas look bulky and are a great filler flower, whilst zinnia will look good as part of contemporary table centrepieces. Autumn: Calla lilies are great for those seeking an autumn colour palette, dahlias produce large dramatic flower heads. Sunflowers may be available in late summer/early autumn, and gerbera will be available too. Winter: Choose roses in pure crystal white or vermillion red, and amaryllis too. Don’t underestimate the potential for the use of bright red berries and consider narcissus paper white too. White lilies make a great winter flower for weddings, as do gardenia and filler stems like gypsophila and hypericum. n

DO’S AND DON’TS
The ‘I Do’s’ & Don’ts to a
Stress Free Wedding
Planning your wedding is fun, but it can be stressful at times. To ensure you have a stress-free wedding day and a fun planning process, make sure you follow our Do’s and Do Nots! They’ll make sure that when you eventually say ‘I Do,’ you’re a lot calmer and more relaxed...
Do
PLAN FOR THE RAIN
Definitely have an indoor weather option. There is no point at all in worrying about it raining on your wedding day. It also means you can avoid last-minute stress when you’re obsessing over the forecasts in the weeks leading up to the big day.
96
NEW - B&G LINCS 2018 Ad on MANDY.qxp 08/12/2017 09:55 Page 97
Do
REMEMBER TO SEND THANK YOU NOTES
Do remember to send thank you notes to all your guests for attending and making your day special, but also remember the people who worked hard to make your day such a success.
Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff
Every bride after their wedding always says, ‘it was the most perfect day’ and ‘I don’t know what I was worrying about.’ The small details won’t matter at all and you’ll completely forget about them when it comes to walking down the aisle so don’t think about them now. Of course there will be things that go wrong on the day but it will still be perfect to you when you look back on it. Not everyone’s perfect; you can’t plan to have a flawless day because it just isn’t realistic.
Perhaps it was the officiant, the florist or maybe even the venue! You kind words will be highly valued and appreciated.
It also avoids the possibility of stress in the future. Some people may even be offended that you hadn’t thanked them for their work, and it puts you in their good books too. Especially make sure to thank family and friends who helped with planning.
Don’t
Date Do Have Nights...
And make sure they’re not related to weddings at all! Planning a wedding does not have to take over your life and make sure it doesn’t. Schedule them and make sure you spend some quality time with the man of your dreams who will make all of this stress worth it in the end!
ATTEMPT TO ‘DIY’ YOUR WEDDING MAKEUP
It’s tempting to save a bit of cash and do your makeup yourself, but take the stress away of getting the perfect wing on your eyeliner and hire a professional. You’ll appreciate a pamper before the day too!
Don’t
Forget your girls! As well as date night with your future hubby, have girly days with your bridal party! Go to a spa and just relax and unwind. Don’t talk about wedding planning at all and just enjoy a good gossip and a spot of R&R. This can definitely be worth it when you’re in the throes of serious wedding planning and your girls will appreciate it too. If not a spa day, do something fun like go karting! It will help to take your mind off the subject. 97
NEW - B&G LINCS 2018 Ad on MANDY.qxp 08/12/2017 09:55 Page 98
Don’t
- DO’S AND DON’TS -
Forget your groom... Make sure your groom is involved too, and don’t just go ahead and plan the whole thing yourself; the day is about both of you.
Do
WEAR IN YOUR SHOES AROUND THE HOUSE
Walk around in your wedding shoes regularly! If you haven’t broken your wedding shoes in, definitely do this or you could get some very bad and uncomfortable blisters on the big day especially if you’re planning to wear them on the dancefloor too!
Don’t
Be antisocial all day
Don’t be on Facebook and Twitter all day. People will be sending you congratulations and you’ll want to respond and take photos, but they’ll understand if you leave it to the day after. Don’t take your phone so you’re not tempted to overuse it.
98
DO: STICK TO YOUR AGREED WEDDING BUDGET... This is one of the most important rules! Stick to your allocated budget! This is tricky to do, but there’s nothing that will stress you out more than money problems and not having a Pinterest-perfect wedding. Be realistic with what you can afford, and don’t look at anything - especially wedding dresses - that is above your pricetag. Use popular website like www.ukbride.co.uk to plan your budget properly.
NEW - B&G LINCS 2018 Ad on MANDY.qxp 08/12/2017 09:55 Page 99
Don’t
IGNORE EXPERT ADVICE
Don’t Try to make everyone else happy
Don’t aim to stick to traditions or what your mother-in-law wants. Do what makes you and your husband happy and do make your wedding reflect your personality.
Listen to your photographers, your florist and you cake maker. Let them tell you what works best. Don’t try and be a wedding expert and to really help with wedding stress, hire a wedding planner. Experts are great so don’t be scared to rely on them and use their knowledge. They ar only there to try and help.
Do
Do
Have Dance Lessons
If you’re stressing over the first dance and your two left feet, it’s very normal to have dance lessons before the big day. It’s something fun to do with your husband to be and it stops you stressing over not doing it right or tripping over. It also means you look amazing on your wedding day and can give your guests a good show!
BE REALISTIC ABOUT YOUR WEIGHT LOSS GOALS
At the end of the day, all that matters about weight is that the dress fits. If you plan to lose too much weight, this can add heaps of stress onto your already stressful wedding planning. Set a doable goal.
Don’t sit divorced couples next to each other...
Not only will this be immensely awkward for the couple or parents involved, you could be nervous that a family drama will go down. In which case, it’s best to avoid it at all costs. Just seat divorced couples farapart or people who don’t get along far apart, especially if you’re having a free bar! This way you don’t even need to worry about it.

Checklist The Groom’s
Make sure your groom has checked all of these things off his list! 1. The Rings This has got to be the most important thing to remember. It’s the best man’s responsibility but make sure to keep checking he has them! 4. Go Easy on the Alcohol Don’t have too much to drink before the ceremony. Nothing worse than a groom slurring his ‘I Do.’
2. Breakfast Champagne is not a good idea on an empty stomach and you won’t eat for hours into the day.
9. Special Something Remember to get your bride a special something for the morning of the wedding.
6. Timings Make sure you’re aware of how long everything takes!
5. Schedule Make sure you know the order of the day. This is the most important day of your lives. Show that you’ve paid attention by having a good idea of the plan for the day. 7. Thank You’s The chances are, your friends and family helped out with the wedding planning. Make sure you know who helped, and give them a word of thanks in your speech.
3. Fresh Trim Shave and do it well or get a barber to give you a clean cut shave and a fresh haircut, not too different or short.
8. Best Man’s Speech Whilst it’s important to think about what you’re going to say in your speech, be aware of what your best man might say and mention anything sensitive you really want him to leave out! 10. Stay Hydrated Finally, weddings are thirsty work! You’ll be talking all day so make sure you keep hydrated! 103

TRANSPORT
Travel in Style 1
Go Modern: Opt for executive transport like a modern Mercedes saloon, or modern Rolls Royce and you’ll enjoy a refined ride.
Wedding transport is not just a practical consideration, it involves choosing the vehicle from which you’ll alight at the church. It will also appear in your photos and waft you to your reception... so ensure you travel in style with our suggestions! This page: Modern, and refined Mercedes E-Class executive saloon from Classic Rolls & Bentley. Stretched limo with plenty of leg (and dress!) room from Boston
Limoscene & Wedding Cars. Cool retro VW camper from VW4Weddings. Opposite: These 1930s style Beaufords provide the ability to drop the roof and travel in style; Lincolnshire
Wedding Cars. Classic 1967 Daimler V8 from KR Classic Cars. Or, for something unusual, why not take a trip on the Rutland Belle.
To transport your bridal party to your hen night, or take along family in your wedding car, stretched limousines provide an abundance of legroom and the ability to transport up to 10 people, depending on the model.
Modern vehicles will also have equally modern touches, too, such as air conditioning; handy on a very warm summer day in a bulky dress!
NEW - B&G LINCS 2018 Ad on MANDY.qxp 08/12/2017 09:56 Page 105
2
Classic Cars: Otherwise, few cars can provide a sense of occasion like a classic car, from Rolls Royce saloons to classic Jaguar models or even 1930s style Beauford cars - replicas of vehicles from the hot rod era. Expect a little less legroom, but if you’re planning a summer wedding, you can seek out a convertible model and enjoy being on show for all to see!
As the expression goes, ‘they don’t make ‘em’ like they used to,’ and wafting along in a classic car is the ultimate way to ensure you arrive at the church or reception venue in style!
3
Horse Power: A third option is to hire a horse and cart. Ideal for country weddings, from open traps to enclosed carriages, arriving by horse power is better when you’ve a short journey to make, though access may be problematic with a bit of a step up.
Other options under this category include ‘pumpkin’ carriages, but we prefer the traditional open style. Some suppliers even offer the option to remain at your reception venue and provide younger guests with horse and cart rides too.
And naturally, beautifully turned out horses will look great in your wedding photographs!
4
Something Different: Of course, if you’re seeking something a little unusual, there are many suppliers some a little further afield - happy to oblige.
We’ve seen country weddings with brides or grooms arriving on a tractor, we’ve seen pleasure cruises like The Rutland Belle used as a pre-reception drinks venue, and we’ve witnessed brides arriving via helicopter.
We’ve also known hen nights with brides travelling by fire engine or stretched Hummer and to really treat the groom, you could also hire a supercar - an Aston Martin, or Ferrari - to ensure the groom arrives in style too! n
