CHOOSING YOUR

WEDDING DRESS

Many brides want to start looking for their wedding dress immediately but buy in haste and you’ll repent at leisure. Take more considered approach, visit as many retailers as possible and always make appointments so you can be assured of one-to-one attention... l Keep a scrapbook of ideas before visiting retailers you know what dresses to start looking at. l Try as many styles as possible many brides choose a completely different dress to the one they thought they’d buy.

l Don’t take an entourage wedding dress shopping take just one trusted advisor. l Set a budget and stick with it. l Decide on underwear and shoes beforehand - different dresses require different bras.

Generally the more formal your dress, the longer your veil should be. Typically a shoulder or elbow-length veil will be 22-25”. To your hip, look for a 45” veil. The most popular length of veil is around 72” - this is nearly floor length. Standard terms used for trains are Chapel (three feet from the waist), Cathedral (nine feet from the waist) and Royal Cathedral which is longer than nine feet.

MATERIALS, GIRLS: Chiffon: lightweight satin, less shiny. Organza: Stiffer than chiffon, use for multi-layered skirts. Taffeta: Crisp, usually shiny. Silk: Heavy and glossy, Duchesse Satin is lighter and less expensive.

BUYING ABROAD Brides are often tempted to save money buying cheap replicas of designer dresses, usually from the Middle East. Many brides have been disappointed with the quality of the dress they receive, and with no fittings and adjustments possible with mail order dresses, we’d exercise some caution.

DISCOUNT DRESS If you’re buying your dress, veil, tiara and shoes from one retailer, try and negotiate a discount.

DRESS FITTINGS Always ask your retailer if fittings are included, how many and when why will occur.

HIDING ARMS If you’re conscious of your ‘bingo wings’ try a dress with capped shoulders or elbow length gloves.

DRESS FINDER Try an online dress finder like the one of www.ukbride.co.uk. You can visualise a style and find a retailer stocking a particular dress.
