LincolnshireTwinning
Twinning in Lincolnshire THIS YEAR marks an extraordinary number of anniversaries and a broad spectrum of events through the history of twinning. The events have been organised amongst strong local communities. Lincolnshire is a county with an unbelievable amount of courage, strength, sense of community, and above all else, pride. Last month we featured Community Lincs — an organisation trying to support smaller towns and villages within the county. They encourage them to make the most of their identity, and do this in the hope that they come to realise that their community is something incredible and unique. Having a strong sense of community within an area is also a huge part of being one half of a twin town. There are many Lincolnshire towns and villages twinned with places around the world, especially within Europe. Twinning has recently been the subject of great discussion in the national news due to many towns scrapping their twinning arrangements with their continental counterparts. Many towns in Lincolnshire, too, are struggling to keep ties with their twins in Europe, mainly due to funding.
Lincolnshire has around 50 towns twinned with locations in Europe. Last month North Lincolnshire inherited three more twin towns, so Mayor Keith Vickers paid them a visit...
North Lincolnshire Mayor Keith Vickers understands this, and is trying his best to secure twinning in the North of the county. Keith recently took a trip to Clamart to strengthen ties with our foreign counterparts. Town twinning in Europe began unofficially in 1836, between the German city of Paderborn and the French city of Le Mans. The first recorded modern twinning agreement was between Keighley and Poix-du-Nord in France in 1920 following the end of the First World War. This was initially referred to as an ‘adoption’ of the French town. Formal twinning charters were not exchanged officially until 1986. The practice was continued after the Second World War as a way to bringing European people into a closer understanding of each other. Within Europe, town twinning is supported by the European Union, and a support scheme was established in 1989. In 2003 an annual budget of about 12 million Euros was allocated to around 1,300 projects. The Council of European Municipalities and Regions also works closely with the Commission to promote modern, high quality twinning initiatives and exchanges that involve all sections of the community.
Above: Keith Vickers signing the twinning agreement.

“A twinning is the coming together of two communities developing closer ties of friendship.” said Jean Bareth. Jean Bareth was one of the founders of the Council of European Municipalities and Regions. He identified the primary values twinning represents, including friendship, co-operation and mutual awareness. Twinning is the most visible form of European co-operation. It covers a wide range of topics from art and culture, young people, citizenship, sustainable development, local public services, local economic development and social inclusion. The signing of a formal twinning agreement facilitates the setting up of a long-term trusting relationship, but is not legally binding. Its content is not fixed and may be amended depending on the nature of the partnership which is being set up, and according to the wishes of the partner towns. Towns can be twinned for many reasons, including similar size, population, industry, and even just because they offer something unique to the other town. Usually alternate visits to each twin town are organised each year by the mayoralty. With twinning issues being raised in Lincolnshire, an official town twinning visit to France was last month undertaken by the Mayor and Mayoress of North Lincolnshire to strengthen ties, and to set out the future for their twin town agreement.
8
North Lincolnshire Council believes the attendance of the Mayor and Mayoress at the anniversary event will strengthen historic twinning links. “The North Lincolnshire Council recently inherited three twin towns, in Poland, Germany and France.” said Mayor Keith Vickers. The newly-created unitary council took over the link with Clamart established by the former Scunthorpe Borough in 1975. The Mayor and Mayoress visited Le Senateur-Maire de Clamart for celebrations being held to mark the 15th anniversary of twinning with North Lincolnshire. It was also the occasion of the 35th anniversary of twinning with Scunthorpe. “Our area has been officially twinned with Clamart since 1996, following local government reorganisation.” says Keith. “We have now set up a meeting to explore possible ways forward and links for the future of this twinning.” Clamart is especially interested in organising school exchanges with a musical background... and over the next few pages we’ll see a few more of Lincolnshire’s European contemporaries. n For more information visit www.northlincs.gov.uk.

The last visit from Washingborough to Orgerus was for the 20th Anniversary in 2010. Orgerus is also Twinned with Unterdiessen in Germany and it was their 10th Anniversary, too.
For the 20th anniversary, Washingborough enjoyed a carvery and barn dance for their French partners with a buffet... and of course, plenty of wine!
Washingborough holds twinning association events throughout the year, with their next fundraiser on March 3rd, in preparation for the next visit. n Visit the website for more information, and to get involved: www.community. lincolnshire.gov.uk/washingborough twinningassociation.

Quirky Luxury... A £1m restoration of one of Stamford’s most beautiful coaching inns is paying off, as the William Cecil’s first six months have met with huge praise. This month, we recommend trying one of the area’s newest, most quirky and stylish restaurants, situated next to the historic Burghley House estate from which its identity is derived... Words & Photos: Rob Davis.
STAMFORD IS CERTAINLY BEAUTIFUL. The old limestone town with the Welland trickling through has successfully resisted modern architecture and multinational retailers, to leave behind a great looking town full of thriving independent businesses. It is also home to a number of restaurants, some of which are truly exceptional. The latest example is the newly refurbished William Cecil... and we think it’s set to gain a reputation as one of the town’s best restaurants, despite reopening just six months ago. The venue is the sixth addition to Hillbrooke Hotels’s portfolio of quality pub restaurants and coaching inns. A further presence in Stamford is the Bull & Swan, just down the road from its newest acquisition. The William Cecil is a larger project and represents the company’s flagship venue in Lincolnshire. The Grade II* listed William Cecil has 27 rooms, all beautifully — and individually — designed, as well as two dining rooms, three function rooms, spacious bar and a comfortable orangery.
16
Refurbished beautifully, after a
£1m investment, the William Cecil is already establishing itself as one of the best restaurants in Stamford...

“We have some really great ideas for Spring dining and some
really good local ingredients to call upon, so we’re looking forward to the next couple of months!” says Nick Jefford... “It’s important to create somewhere that looks good, somewhere that offers quality.” says the venue’s General Manager, Nick Jefford, “But more important than this was the creation of somewhere that was accessible to all.” “The company’s slogan is ‘quirky luxury,’ and that’s what we’ve aimed to create here. We believe that high standards of dining and professional service doesn’t necessarily need to take place in an environment that’s formal. We want to create a warm place to dine that’s comfortable and enjoyable for all and never feels stuffy.” The two dining rooms are particularly well appointed, with soaring ceilings and large print foil wallpaper creating a sense of space. Varnished original floorboards, heavy traditionally carved chairs and grand fireplaces all create a cosy feel. The smaller of the two dining rooms also features wood panelling which is continued inbetween tables to create separate, enclosed dining spaces. This allows the restaurant to retain its ability to cater for its 75 covers whilst at the same time affording customers their own ‘rooms,’ creating an intimate, environment which is plush and comfortable. The à la carte menu is served in each dining room, and in the bar. The latter also has a further bar menu comprising nibbles, quick bites from olives to open sandwiches, sharing slates (charcuterie, fish and ploughmans) and fish & chips. The Nibbles & Starters section is nine dishes strong, ranging from Hambleton Sour Dough breads and bowls of olives to Thornham Oysters, Smoked Duck Salad and Smoked Haddock. A choice of six main courses follows, from Rump of Lamb served with White Beans, Wild Mushrooms, Creamed Potato & Tarragon, to Roasted Pork Belly, with Buttered Kale, Parsnip & Apple Purée, and Fish & Chips. A further steak section provides rump and ribeye steaks and a monster 20oz chateaubriand option. Each of these is available with a choice of four sauces and five side dishes.
18
A choice of five puddings includes zesty options. These include Passion Fruit & Lemon Posset, a daily-changing Crèmé Brulée, Warm Apple Crumble, or the intriguing Meringue Mont Blanc served with Chestnut Purée & Dark Chocolate Sorbet. A local cheese board created by Stamford’s Cheese Cellar is also available with one, three or five cheeses. Our featured dessert was a Valentine’s Day special; Assiette of Chocolate, rich, dark, with a couple of quenelle of home made sorbet — perfectly designed for two to share! Sunday lunch at the restaurant is offered at a reasonable £19 for two courses, or £24.50 for three. A choice of three starters, four main course options and four puddings are available, but our recommendation would be the Roasting Pot — designed to feed a family of four or six for £45 and £65 respectively. These are prepared to order in around half an hour so families can spend some time together over some nibbles beforehand. Executive Chef Neil Dowson has been in post since the new restaurant was established, and has set up Hillbrooke Hotels’s other kitchens and menus. In doing so, Neil has established an excellent working relationship with local suppliers from Cote Hill to Hambleton Bakery and Grasmere Farm for the venue’s pork. The latter supplements pork from The William Cecil’s nine saddlebacks reared in woodland adjacent to the car park and due to go to slaughter in late January just in time for February diners to enjoy. Other suppliers include Stiltons of Peterborough for its butchery, Coles of King’s Lynn for its fish and local bakery Mimosa for its afternoon teas. Mimosa also supplies the elements of the William Cecil’s afternoon teas and cream teas served alongside tea pigs and home made biscuits. To accompany, a choice of 11 white and red wines each, a couple of rosés, and four champagnes. Flagships are a Pouilly Fuisse at £43, Haut MedocChâteau Bernadotte at £43 and Cristal at £220, with two champagnes available by the glass and a

i Sauternes dessert wine; the menu is robust but accessible too, with house wines from just £17. Just six months into its refurbishment and with beautiful architecture, quirky but lavish decoration, exceptional food and attentive service, the William Cecil will absolutely become one of Stamford’s smartest and most comfortable restaurants. “We’ve had some amazing feedback so far.” says Nick. “We’ve had a really busy Christmas which has been encouraging, but we’re really looking forward to the next few months.” “We’ve some great ideas for our Spring menus, and some really good local ingredients to call upon.” “Our aim is to provide simple, fresh, seasonal food, not complicated, but very tasty. We’re not interested in creating a pretentious environment, just a comfortable and happy one for our customers! n
The William Cecil, St Martins, Stamford Food: Fresh, seasonal food — uncomplicated and enjoyable. Environment: Newly refurbished to the tune of £1m, a Grade II* listed hotel, having opened in July 2011. Comfortable and light orangery, sophisticated bar and two wood panelled restaurants. Food Heroes...
A new bistro in the centre of Horncastle aims to create a stylish venue that remains faithful to Lincolnshire’s traditional values of high quality ingredients and true provenance, celebrating the county’s very own ‘food heroes’... NEW, AND BRILLIANT: That’s the only way to describe The Old Stables in the centre of Horncastle, and for Jonathan White & Chris Wilkinson, the success they’ve already had with their new business is only the beginning.
Cider and Batemans to F W Read’s Poacher Cheese. Naturally, locally sourced beef for the bistro’s ciabattas & sandwiches, and its vegetables are produced locally too.
Both natives of Lincolnshire, Jonathan comes from a farming background and has a real appreciation for the provenance of food, whilst Chris has over seven years experience running his own café on the East Coast.
Just one menu offers all-day dining with hot and cold sandwiches, oven baked potatoes and salad bowls for the Spring months. The Old Stables’s grazing plates and anti-pasto supplement Lincolnshire platters with mouthwatering local produce including stuffed chine and haslet.
The two realised that there was a real need for a bistro that went a little further than most to champion local ingredients and suppliers. After selling their previous business, Johnathan and Chris set about creating The Old Stables in Horncastle’s Market Place.
“On our menus we’ve used the phrase ‘relax, refresh, revive,’ and that’s the character of the place we wanted to create.” says Jonathan. “We wanted The Old Stables to be somewhere comfortable, somewhere to escape to, a sociable, friendly, warm place.”
“We saw the place in April 2011 and decided it was perfect for what we wanted to create.” says Jonathan. “A high quality bistro offering everything from freshly made coffee and home made cake to breakfasts, brunches and lunches.”
The bistro offers dishes using “We really do believe the quality ingredients atmosphere of somewhere you and with standards that dine is just as important as the food itself.” would shame many “We’ve been trading for around four months now and I have to say restaurants...
A homely venue with pine furniture, amethyst & eau de nil colour scheme and a clean, contemporary look, it’s a pretty special looking bistro. Thankfully, the food can maintain the high standards of the environment itself, thanks to both the skill of Chris in the kitchen and the wealth of local suppliers he enjoys working with. Sausages are from Mountains, AKA Boston Sausage, whilst bread is locally sourced and freshly baked. Dairy products are from the East Coast’s Rich Pastures dairy, and a huge number of other local suppliers are used from Skidbrooke
22
we’re delighted with the feedback we have received! Our customers all appreciate the fact that we go the extra mile to provide quality food and good customer service, which is lovely!” There are few venues across the county that manage to strike such a successful balance between providing somewhere high quality, but maintaining a relaxed environment. The Old Stables, however, manages it brilliantly. Additionally, its food is well-produced, generous in portion and beautiful in presentation, making a visit in the near future a must. n

Q uality and Q uantity If you’re daunted by the prospect of hosting a dinner party for ten or so people, spare a thought for the workload of Forest Pines’s Paul Montgomery, whose brigade of 35 chefs produce over 250,000 meals each year! Remarkably, though, the venue’s flagship Eighteen57 restaurant still manages to achieve quality as well as quantity! Words & Photos: Rob Davis.
QUALITY, AS WELL AS QUANTITY. That’s the aim of Paul Montgomery’s brigade of 35 chefs, who produce over 250,000 main courses each year. With a food turnover of £2,200,000 and three restaurants on the site, it’s a huge operation. But for Paul, his flagship dining experience, the recently refurbished Eighteen57 restaurant, is Forest Pines’s ultimate expression of quality, and his favourite responsibility. Forest Pines as a whole is a huge venue; 188 bedrooms, nine conference rooms, a 27 hole championship golf course, spa and health club. Its flagship restaurant, however, is branded separately and exists for both residents and non-residents to enjoy, as a high quality restaurant with a seafood bias. Working alongside just three sous chefs, Eighteen57’s remit is to produce just 7,000 of the venue’s total number of dishes, but to do so in a way that competes with the county’s highest quality standalone restaurants.

“We sat on the deck of the yacht enjoying Bollinger champagne
and caviar, but you know what, I’d much rather be here... that says something about how proud we are of what we’ve created!” Paul’s career seems set to be inextricably linked to the sea, with the Northumberland chef leaving his usual four and five star hotels to pursue a two year stint on a privately owned luxury yacht. “It was for the Swedish entrepreneur who invented the CD!” says Paul. “He owned the yacht and spent his time travelling on it or chartering it out. Catering for private parties of between 10 and 40, we attended the Cannes Film Festival, the Monaco Grand Prix and spent our time sailing in the Mediterranean.” It was an incredible life, and a challenging environment to cater in. You couldn’t nip to the shops so planning was important, but I could get up early and go to Italian, French and Spanish markets when we were moored up, which meant I had a whole world of ingredients to choose from.” The role not only sharpened Paul’s planning skills and forced him to think on his feet, but also gave him a new-found appreciation for the provenance of his ingredients. “Seafood is an obvious example.” he says. “We’ve an excellent provider based in Grimsby, and I still take young chefs down to Grimsby Dock to see where their ingredients come from. Good relationships with suppliers are hugely important as the ingredients are the starting point for any dish.” “Our vegetables are sourced from Scunthorpe’s Turner & Price, our meat comes from the town’s Crawfords and Alfred Enderby provides our smoked fish.” When Paul arrived at Forest Pines some four and a half years ago, his first responsibility was to create a new kitchen amid the investment of over £25m made by owners QHotels. Four times larger than the previous kitchens, he then had the staff, the ingredients and the kitchens to enable the food to compete with the area’s other dining rooms. Eighteen57 is only open from Tuesday to Saturday evening — deliberately co-inciding with the availability of the best fresh fish from Grimsby’s fish market — and provides just 80 covers. An à la carte menu is offered, with nine starters, 10 main courses and
28
eight desserts, but for those who want a dining experience that’s truly luxurious, a six course tasting menu is also offered, for £39/head. For those seeking daytime or more casual dining, the venue has another dining room, the 190 capacity Grill which, as its name suggests, provides more casual dining, leaving Eighteen57 to specialise. Two main course specials are also offered, however, changing on a daily basis to reflect suppliers’ best produce. The restaurant itself has no outward-facing aspects, just a few windows peering into a courtyard. This renders it a little more intimate and tucked-away, further accentuated by low ceilings, lower lighting and darker colours. Dark wood and deep blue (almost oceanic) colours combine with easy listening music, linen napkins and candles to create a contemporary, plush feel. The à la carte dining experience begins with an amuse bouche, whilst a pre-dessert provides a refreshing palate cleanser. Pre-dinner canapés are currently being mooted as a 2012 feature too. Bread is freshly baked in-house, and all ice creams and sorbets are home-made. To accompany, there’s a choice of 18 wines. Highlights during our visit include a seafood starter of Ballotine of Salmon and Poached King Prawn with Caviar and Mascapone, and a main course of 28 day matured Fillet Steak with Seared Icelandic Prawns and Potato Rösti with Baby Vegetables and Jus. Our preferred dessert option was the lavishly cocoa-laden Chocolate Fondant with gooey centre and home-made Vanilla Pod Ice Cream. “Quality is really important to Eighteen57.” says Paul. “Just looking around you can see how many people pass through Forest Pines either on business or to enjoy golf or the spa and health club. It was really important that the restaurant was a separate entity that allowed people to dine somewhere special, away from the more heavily used areas of the hotel. It’s separate because it’s a premium experience.”

i Premium is correct; meals are impeccably presented, in the case of our starter, embellished with finishing touches such as caviar and saffron. Service and attention to detail are both commensurate with the cuisine, and initial suspicions about the size of the venue are quickly laid to rest. A committed team, a dedicated dining room and a clear aim toward quality dining has given Eighteen57 its own identity and real credibility. The AA agrees, and has just given the restaurant its fourth consecutive rosette, whilst the Scunthorpe Telegraph named Eighteen57 the Best Hotel Restaurant in Lincolnshire. It’s little wonder then, that Paul doesn’t regret leaving his private yacht to weigh anchor near Brigg. “I remember drinking Bollinger and enjoying caviar on the deck overlooking St Tropez, but you know, I’d much rather be here... we’ve created something special, and that gives me just as much pleasure!” n

How long have you been with the Lord Nelson? I’m from Barnsley originally, and previously worked with the venue’s Executive Chef, Mark Nesbitt. They approached me following the refurbishment of the Lord Nelson, so six months ago I jumped at the chance to work in a challenging environment that has so many fresh ingredients close by. Which foods are your respective food heaven and food hell? I love Japanese food — its simplicity and freshness, it really appeals. Having worked in continental restaurants I do like French food too, but it’s a bit heavier. My food hell is anything manufactured or processed. No matter what the type of restaurant, quality should be a certainty, not a luxury. What’s the secret to creating a great dining experience? A restaurant that has good customer service and front of house to back up the strength of its brigade. Good service, again, should be guaranteed, it shouldn’t be a bonus.

Is there life beyond the kitchen? Sometimes... time off is quite limited during the festive season, it sometimes feels like we’re nocturnal, but that’s OK... and even in my spare time I still enjoy cooking for family and friends! n The Lord Nelson at Winthorpe near Newark can be contacted for bookings on 01636 703578. LincolnshirePoetry
L incolnshire Performing
This month is all about the creative arts, from dance to poetry and all the things which have the ability to bring both people and communities together. With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, we look to people who are changing the way we think of poetry... verse is not just for Valentine’s Day and this month our poet laureate proves that it can be found in more places than cards for loved ones... Words: Anna Morrish.
MEET LINCOLNSHIRE’S FIRST POET LAUREATE: Joel Stickley spoke to Lincolnshire Pride this month about how it felt to be chosen, and what poetry means to him. The writer was the first to be chosen as Lincolnshire’s poet laureate and is extremely happy to be playing the inaugural role into 2012. “It’s incredible that these roles exist.” Says Joel. “People often forget about poetry, it’s something you learn at school, and never think of again.” The poet laureate term was initially for six months, but Joel has continued in his role, visiting schools, and contributing to local community projects. “I’ve done a lot since getting the role; I’ve done school visits, readings at county fairs, and had to write a poem every month.” he says. Joel is passionate about his art and tries to spread the message that poetry is more than just words on a piece of paper stored in a library somewhere. “I try to get poetry out there in as many ways as possible, and keep it varied. I try to do unexpected things.” Joel recently performed a poetry reading over an air traffic control centre over the radio system as the planes came in, and is soon to have a poem feature in a stained glass window of a church within the Churches Conservation Trust’s project ArChWay. The project aims to turn rural churches that are disused into community areas of creative art. Joel likes to perform his work live, and finds that performance poetry is one of the best forms to work in.
40
“When you perform you get honest feedback and can really see the public’s reaction. Overall it makes you a better writer.” Poetry is more increasingly finding its way in to the lives of younger generations, with the Latitude Festival boasting one of the biggest poetry tents in Europe. “I love the fact that poetry has become part of festival life.” He explains that poetry should be a part of everyone’s lives, as its not just about flowers and fluffy animals. “Poetry is real, and is a great form of personal expression.” he says. “I find that I am heavily influenced by music, as poetry is all about rhythm and how the piece sounds when being read out aloud.” Joel believes that being passionate about poetry is the key to becoming a successful poet. “You have to love what you do and be committed.” One poet Joel aspires to is John Cooper Clarke from the punk era of the late 1970s. Joel also highly recommends local performance poet John Osbourne from Brigg. n Find Joel’s work on www.joelstickley.com.
For me, it’s all about the rhythm
and music of how the piece sounds once read out...

Lincolnshire in Words... By Way Of Introduction by Joel Stickley BY WAY OF INTRODUCTION is a poem in response to Joel’s appointment on becoming the first Lincolnshire Poet laureate. Joel wanted to write something which was short and light as well as pithy. Joel had to write a poem for each month of his Poet Laureate. To begin he wanted to introduce himself to the people of Lincolnshire:
Into the valley of the A46, the valley of roadworks and limestone bricks, of airfields and wheat fields and beet fields and grey seals; into the valley of Donna Nook.
“I try to get poetry in public in as many ways as possible!”
Into the valley of Market Deeping, of Heckington, Quarrington, Donington, Luddington, Horncastle, Mablethorpe, Winterton, Waddington, Alford and Sleaford and Stamford and Manthorpe and Spalding and Grantham and Epworth and Scunthorpe. Into the valley of Skegness. Into the valley of mean more, but say less. Into the valley of poetry, of knowing we have something to say. Into the valley, then up and away.
Lincolnshire Windfarms by Jane Air An epoch of giant clocks expand across the sea and land swallowing up nature In their impatient spin And rapacious span. A meadow of metal petals flowers in the wind petal propellers spinned. The noses of a squadron of Spitfires, all routed to the ground have nowhere to go. Their egg-shaped engines sit in feathery clouds high up in the sky, rolls of hay below. I tread back lightly as I return to track from my windy trail inside a windfarm gale while a swarm of swallows swiftly swoop and sweep nearby as if reclaiming back their sky
A Walk Through Brigg by John Osbourne When you go for a walk through Brigg look at all the changes. The pedestrianised high street the Oxfam bookshop. Remember the cattle on the land where now, Tesco stands and when Lidl was Safeway and Presto and Grandways. Go for a walk through Brigg stop for a half in every pub until your asking for scraps in Scalinis. s we’ve seen with the work of Joel Stickley, the future of poetry in Lincolnshire looks promising, but it comes from an even richer past. Somersby near Spilsby was once home to one of the most famous poets in history. If anyone was to look for any creative inspiration, they need not look far.
A
There are many poetry forms to consider, and many poets to aspire to, several of which are from Lincolnshire, but this year we celebrate the life of one extraordinary man, and world famous poet. 2012 marks the 120th year since one of the most famous and influential poets in history passed on. The remarkable thing is that this poet came from the small village in Lincolnshire. The man referred to is Alfred Lord Tennyson, who was born on August 6th 1809, in Somersby, Lincolnshire. Tennyson came from a middle-class line, and was the fourth child of twelve. Tennyson had both noble and royal ancestry. Alongside two of his brothers, Tennyson had a collection of poems first published locally at the age of 17.
He was a well educated man, attending Louth Grammar School for four years, Scaitcliffe School, Englefield Green and King Edward VI Grammar School, Louth. He attended Trinity College, Cambridge in 1827 where he published his first collection entitled Poems by Two Brothers published. Tennyson was a fantastic poet, writing some notable poems in blank verse, including Ulysses, which is one of his most popular mythological pieces. In Memoriam AHH, is a poem in memory of his good friend Arthur Hallam, which is often considered to be his masterpiece. In 1850 he became Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom during much of Queen Victoria's reign and he remains one of the most popular poets in the English language. He held the longest tenure of any laureate. Queen Victoria was an ardent admirer of Tennyson's work, and in 1884 created him Baron Tennyson, of Aldworth in the County of Sussex and of Freshwater in the Isle of Wight. Tennyson initially declined, finally accepting a peerage in 1883. He took his seat in the House of Lords on 11 March 1884.
Poetry in Lincolnshire has a rich past, with the Tennyson paid close attention to world famous Tennyson musical qualities of words to emphasise his rhythms and originating from meanings. He was an experimental poet, and created a number of poems Somersby. in an array of subjects, often sensitive ones. Thomas Edison made sound recordings of Tennyson reading his own poetry, late in his life. English Victorian painter and sculptor, George Frederic Watts was a good friend of Tennyson. George first met Alfred in 1857 at Little Holland House in Kensington and in the following years George painted him six times and the two men became lifelong friends. Scottish lawyer and satirical writer Thomas Carlyle also had strong views on Tennyson. “He was solitary and sad, as certain men are, dwelling in an element of gloom, carrying a bit of chaos about him, in short, which he is manufacturing into Cosmos.”Said Thomas Carlyle. Tennyson died at Aldwort on October 6, 1892 and was buried in the Poets’ Corner in Westminster Abbey. n For more information visit the Lincoln City Archives or visit: www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/tennyson.

Lincolnshire’s famous son and the country’s well loved poet Alfred Lord Tennyson set the high standard we have for poetry today...
Marriage Morning by Alfred, Lord Tennyson Light, so low upon earth, You send a flash to the sun. Here is the golden close of love, All my wooing is done. Oh, the woods and the meadows, Woods where we hid from the wet, Stiles where we stay'd to be kind, Meadows in which we met! Light, so low in the vale You flash and lighten afar, For this is the golden morning of love, And you are his morning star. Flash, I am coming, I come, By meadow and stile and wood, Oh, lighten into my eyes and heart, Into my heart and my blood! Heart, are you great enough For a love that never tires? O'heart, are you great enough for love? I have heard of thorns and briers, Over the meadow and stiles, Over the world to the end of it Flash for a million miles.
Crossing the Bar by Alfred, Lord Tennyson Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me! And may there be no moaning of the bar, When I put out to sea, But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam, When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark; For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crost the bar.

MUD AND STUD COTTAGES: believe it or not, some are still standing proudly, but they’re few and far between. Many of the mud and stud buildings which are still standing today date back to the 16th and 17th century, and a beautiful pieces of Lincolnshire architectural history. The traditional mud and stud thatched cottage that is Roughton Moor has been standing since 1688, and continues to do so with great beauty. To appreciate all that Roughton Moor encapsulates, you have to
see it in all its splendor. The cottage is made from the traditionally Lincolnshire mud and stud creation, which uses timber framework made from oak, to ensure the building is stable as well as visually outstanding. All of this can be seen at Roughton Moor, standing with many of its original features. The thatched cottage also has an extension, which fits in perfectly to the older part of the building, and makes the property even more majestic. The extension, which was built around 25 years ago,

Looking at the property you probably wouldn’t realise any extension had been added due to the care and attention taken to ensure the building loses none of its original character. The roof has also just been re-thatched to ensure continued the insulation of the property, and will last another 20 years before needing any further attention. Roughton Moor was last home to the Averson family, who lived here for eleven years. It was home to their family who were extremely privileged to live in such a building that has immense character and charm. Speaking to Jane Averson, she explains that the home is perfect for any family, with many adventures to be had on the grounds, and even around them. The house itself is situated in the picturesque location of Woodhall Spa.

The property’s interior has a wealth of period features from exposed beams to leaded windows.
Woodhall Spa is noted for its mineral springs, cinema, and World War II association, and it is also twinned with Roézé-sur-Sarthe in Pays de la Loire, France. Woodhall Spa is also particularly fortunate in still retaining some fine hedgerows with all their abundant wildlife.
On the grounds you will find a thatched gazebo, tennis courts, and a pond its own island and bridge. There are also kennels, stables, barn, and three garages with electric doors. There is also a huge formal garden which is neatly manicured, along with a kitchen garden.
Roughton Moor sits on the outskirts of Woodhall Spa, and has an incredible amount of land for children to play within, where they can take full advantage of the property’s five acres.
Roughton Moor not only comprises the cottage and gardens, but also a three bedroom bungalow which is currently being used as a holiday let.

Walking from the entrance into the kitchen and pantry you will find authentic period features, with fantastic oak beams embedded into the ceilings. Whilst in the living kitchen, which is a generous size, you will be able to appreciate the oak fittings, newly fitted granite topped work surfaces along with the Aga, which heats the whole room. The cottage is also home to a wood burning stove, and open fireplaces, making the house economical and very ‘green.’ The house is welcoming and well insulated, which is perfect for the cold months of winter. The Name for Choice The Name for Quality “QUALITY AND SERVICE.” says Simon Croft of Lincoln’s Croft Carpets. “It’s what makes us stand out from other retailers.” The High Street businessman’s shop has been established for over six years, and is celebrating its first anniversary in larger premises just off the South Park roundabout. “People come to us with colour and price in mind, and whilst we can compete with even multinational retailers, the level of service that we offer means we get repeat business time and time again, and lots of work via recommendation.”
“Our fitters always move furniture and can take old carpet away with no extra charge.” says Simon. “Likewise we make only a minimal charge for grippers and door bars, and don’t charge extra for stair carpeting.” Of Simon’s stock, there’s an even split of synthetic and natural carpets to choose from, with synthetic fibres now matching their traditionally more expensive contemporaries in terms of feel.
“Still, though, I believe wool has the edge.” says Simon. “It has a natural oil on it and this gives a really nice sheen. The company also commissions and manages builders, electricians, plumbers, flooring and tiling specialists, plasterers and decorators to ensure the minimum amount of stress and a better finished product.
Imagine a kitchen and bathroom supplier that could compete with multinationals on price but still provide designer style and absolutely fantastic customer service for complete satisfaction. Now stop imagining and visit Devonports...

Whilst out-of-town DIY stores may seem competitive, their prices don’t reflect the installation cost, or the cost and time it takes to find and contract tradesmen, and to deal with any problems that arise during the project. Because Stephen is involved with each design and installation throughout, he won’t allow problems to occur as a consequence of poor planning or design, which results in a much smoother service and a much happier customer.

Snowdrops
and
Springtime...
February, says Amy Claridge, is a rewarding period, giving ample opportunity time to admire some beautiful Spring snowdrops and crocus, to celebrate the end of the cold months of winter... DEPENDING on whether or not we have snow in the month of February, my month will be spent either curled up on the sofa or outside wrapped up against the chill in Winter woollies. Despite February being a fairly quiet month in the garden, there are still important tasks to be done. If the weather is fairly mild I shall be outside doing a few jobs. Snowdrop Sundays Jon Lawrence, head gardener at Doddington Hall near Lincoln, will be expecting the first of the snowdrops to pop up this month ready for the Snowdrop Sundays, which starts on February 12th. Once the snowdrops start to put in an appearance, Jon will take care and check them by clearing away any stray leaves should they mask any of the clean, beautiful heads of the first Winter snowdrops.
Claire’s father Antony Jarvis and late mother Victoria continued the good work; Antony estimates that he has planted or moved 150,000 bulbs in the last 25 years. Claire has added her own contribution by adding a further 5000 using some money she inherited from her maternal grandmother Cecily Mathias. Now known as Cecily’s Snowdrops, they have done well since they were planted in 2005. Container Gardening If you have a small garden with mainly containers, don’t forget this month to check they are correctly in order.
Gardeners are this month I don’t just treated to a display Unfortunately, mean glance out of your window to check they are of snowdrops, upright; you need to make they haven’t dried out in crocus and early thesurewinter winds, more so if they are sheltered by walls or aconites...
A Pageant of Spring Situated in the walled and wild gardens at Doddington Hall, the snowdrops represent the start of the Elizabethan family home’s pageant of spring bulbs.
Alongside the snowdrops will be drifts of Crocus Thomasianus. To achieve a spectacular display such as the one at Doddington, it takes not only space but time. Creating A Family Garden Doddington has of course had spring bulbs for many years but the work started in earnest in

porches.
A quick sweep of the hands round the earth will remove any dead leaves, and check for cracks if your pots are ceramic or terracotta. Upcycling in the Garden Perhaps this could be the year you try growing plants in something unusual, perhaps grasping the ‘upcycle’ theme so popular now. This is particularly suitable for large country gardens where modern planters can look to new, too sterile.
Crocosmia Thomasianus, on display this month.
An old dolly tub looks lovely planted with frilly tulips such as China Pink, or lay your hands on a battered butler sink. Just be sure that whatever you use has drainage. A rusty pail planted with mint and lemon balm would capture a rustic, make-do-and-mend look perfectly. Feeding the Birds Whilst you are pottering about making plans for your garden, you could think about the birds. February is the last chance to put up bird nesting boxes if you want to attract them in to your garden. Make sure they are safe and secure, way out of the local cat’s reach. Ventilating Greenhouses It’s natural to want to keep everything warm and cosy during the cold months but on mild days in February it is a good idea to ventilate your greenhouse or potting shed to help prevent fungal problems. In February, Rachel Petheram — whose cutting garden is based at Doddington Hall and from whom I was inspired by the China Pink tulips in dolly tub idea — gets ready for a busy couple of months in February.

QUICK TIPS FOR
GARDENING IN FEBRUARY This is the ideal time to work on improving your garden. For example by constructing paths or patios, restoring the lawn or enriching the soil with nutrients.
Pay special attention to pots and containers this month.
Do you have nesting boxes in your garden? If so, they will need a thorough clean to remove any vermin so that birds that want to nest in the boxes this spring will not be bothered by them. Check whether perennials in beds and borders have been lifted by the frost. Push them back into the soil. If there is no frost, now is an excellent time to plant and replant deciduous shrubs. Many varieties (including hedge plants) are offered with bare roots. If there is a frost or if you do not have time to plant them immediately, you should entrench the roots temporarily. Replant shrubs with as much soil as possible around the roots. This is the best time to remove trees. Leave the removal of big trees to a professional/tree surgeon. They have the right equipment and know precisely how to avoid any damage.
Create nesting boxes to look after your garden’s birds.
Looking Ahead Next month Rachel will be sowing a lot of seeds in preparation of her summer bridal flowers, so February is a time to get her polytunnel tidy, clean pots and trays and ensure there is enough compost to hand. When not heaving compost sacks around the more delicate task of preparing her stock for the Doddington Hall Farm Shop keeps her busy, but you can do what she does at home if you have the know how. “I plant pretty pots and cups up with bulbs which are ‘in the green’,” explains Rachel. “This means I get bulbs which have already shot up, and I plant them with a little compost and moss. The effect is pleasingly simple and adds blooms to the home at a time when we are between festival foliage and springtime flowers.” Seasonal Flowers Rachel pots up snowdrops, grape hyacinths and tetes-a-tetes in particular, favouring them for their small scale and delicate form. A firm believer in seasonal flowers, Rachel prefers to give bulbs for both Valentines’ Day and Mothering Sunday rather than roses and imported blooms.
Early Dahlias and Sweet Peas Other jobs you find Rachel doing in February is the early selection of dahlias, as they are needed for April, and the best ones are snapped up early. At the end of the month, Rachel will be sowing a few extra sweet peas for both aroma and colour. Gentle Pruning A little gentle pruning is also on Rachel’s agenda — anything dead, diseased or dying explains Rachel — plus she will also be making the most of the end of the bare root season, which runs from November to March. If any roses or hedges, which are sold with bare roots, need planting, Rachel will be making sure they are in this month. One last job... One last thing you can do in February is to make the most of its bareness by assessing its layout and design; look at your garden from all angles as well as from inside the house. Try to take an objective look from your most commonly used vantage points and begin to make plans for improving each view as many spaces can be improved with a simple planting of your favourite flowers or colours. n

Fruitful February
This February lots of rain is needed to maintain Lorraine’s pond’s ecosystem, but one place spirits won’t be dampened is in the newly populated coop as Lorraine takes on a flock of ex-battery hens... WHEN I MOVED TO DAMSON COTTAGE, I had no idea how much I would change.
my birthday, not to mention a hive, tools and of course bees!
It has long been a dream of mine to live this life and really immerse myself in the world of nature. I am learning every day and I am repeatedly impressed by the environment around me. I wouldn’t change it for the world.
I still apply my makeup, if not every day, and my hair usually looks tidy. I don’t think that’s a bad thing, after all certain standards need to be maintained, but now the finer things in life that I appreciate are the tools that help me live this life more successfully.
A Sense of Nostalgia However, there are a couple of things, that I do sometimes find myself feeling a little nostalgic for. I used to be a woman who took considerable time each day to dress and put on my makeup. My hair was always in place and never scrunched under a hat or worse still tied up in a ponytail to ‘keep it out of the way.’ Bumping into someone I know happened all the time and I never wanted to be ‘caught out.’ Frivolous I know but I think this is something that most women will understand!
In the summer months sharing
In the Garden; their company and watching individual personalities Lincolnshire Pride’s their at work has been fascinating. Lorraine Bellis works It’s no wonder hens are the first livestock for from her kitchen garden smallholders. For some time we have been talking in Thurlby near about how to increase the flock. Outback Influences How times have changed. Now I find myself looking at Australian boots made for working in the outback with longing; how comfortable yet smart, how practical yet attractive — though not everyone agrees with that observation! The Finer Things Bruce and his little flock of hens are enjoying the garden and have been a great success.
Betty hatched a chick – Boo, but this is a big garden and a new hen each year won’t make a great difference to the production of eggs.
Battery Empowered A couple of times a year battery egg farmers clear out their entire flock and start again; this is to ensure that the hens are not over a year old and will reliably lay an egg each every day.
The flock, which can be over 1000 birds, are removed from the cages and summarily slaughtered. During their short lives they are caged and restricted. They are pale, featherless and nothing like a farmyard hen as they never experience normal behaviour. Celebrity Campaigns I’m sure many of you will have seen the campaigns to ban the practice of caged hens championed by celebrities like Hugh Fearnely-Whittingstall and Jamie Oliver. From those campaigns we now know there are charities in the country that try to rehome ex battery hens. It will surely come as no surprise to you that I am not a supporter of the practice and last year I decided to take some ex battery hens. However, I missed out by just a few days. So, this year, when the word went around the Twittersverse that it was time for rehoming, I didn’t wait. “How many hens will the empty coop hold?” I asked my long suffering husband. “Thirty, I should think.” he replied, and that was it. On a wet windy Sunday just over a week ago,

PLANT, PRUNE, PICK: JOBS FOR FEBRUARY we set off on an expedition to collect thirty ex-battery hens. Acclimatising to Humane Treatment Several hours later, they became the latest residents of the big coop. Trouble was they didn’t know the difference between darkness and daylight and for six nights they had to be caught and put to bed in the coop. You can imagine how elated I felt when on the seventh night as the darkness fell and the drizzle poured on me, I watched them all, one by one as they filed into the coop to bed. Over the week they have scratched and flapped, fought for a position in the ‘pecking order’ attempted a dust bath and eaten greens from the garden. I can see feathers growing back in bald patches, combs changing colour from pale to red and they all respond to a visit by rushing up to see what food and drink you have for them. It won’t be long before they will be running around the garden as our other hens do. Pond Life The big pond is empty, which is a worrying development. Every winter the massive ‘hole
in the ground’ becomes a pond, as the water naturally rises around the small island in the middle. However, the signs so far, are that the crater will not be transformed during 2012. I do hope this will change, which means I do hope for considerably more rain. Moorhens are regular visitors and their youngsters are welcome additions to the activities here in the spring. More importantly, the lack of water clearly indicates how low the water table has dropped this year. The rainfall has been dismally low throughout the year and that means very difficult conditions for food producers in the coming year. Mulch for Moisture For home growers, the techniques of deep mulching and careful planting will help to make water go further. Deep or raised beds, no dig and the application of compost or well-rotted manure will help to contain the moisture in the soil. Let’s hope we get the rain we need and the year ahead turns out to be a good one. n
n PREPARE BEDS WITH MANURE: Digging beds, mulching and weeding may be necessary, but this may be delayed because of winter weather. n PLANT BARE ROOTED TREES: Pick a native apple or pear tree and give it a home in your garden. n BEGIN TO GROW PEAS: Use a greenhouse or an unheated porch, giving them a head start. n PLANT ONIONS AND SHALLOTS: An expensive crop to buy but easy to grow Make sure the bulb tips are just below the surface of the soil when you plant them to ensure that the birds don’t pick them out.

Strictly Speaking
Brendan Cole, one of television’s most charismatic choreographers and performers from the hit dance show Strictly Come Dancing will be visiting Lincolnshire for one night only this month with his popular show Live & Unjudged... Words: Anna Morrish.
DANCE is becoming an ever more popular art form, popularised in hit television shows such as Britains Got Talent, Dancing on Ice and the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing.
“I wanted to do a theatre tour of some kind. I wrote the show myself as I knew exactly what I wanted to do. It’s the biggest and best show I have ever done.”
This month, Strictly Come Dancing’s biggest star is coming to Lincolnshire, performing his live show around the country and stopping to wow the audiences at Scunthorpe’s Bath Halls, Brendan Cole will come to deliver a fantastic show.
The show encapsulates all that is ballroom dancing, and includes all of Brendan’s favourite dances.
Brendan will appear in Scunthorpe on February 1st, with his successful show Brendan Cole: Live and Unjudged. “It will be my first time at Scunthorpe, but I’m looking forward to it.” says Brendan in an exclusive interview with Pride. “I am hoping to visit Lincoln soon too, as my wife’s grandparents live there.” Brendan has been in the television series Strictly Come Dancing since it began, but wanted to try something else.
92
“It’s better than Strictly because it’s mine rather than me being “I wanted to part of a television production.” do a theatre tour
of some kind, and it’s the best show I have ever done...”
“It’s all about self satisfaction and a sense of pride.”
The show includes Latin dances, the waltz, cha-cha-cha and salsa. This will be the last chance for anyone to see this particular show created by one of the most charismatic choreographers and performers.
The show is filled with incredible dancing from Strictly Come Dancing professionals. There is also a chance to chat to Brendan and to get involved and really enjoy the 14 piece band. Brendan’s brother Scott also appears in the show, and brings an
incredibly fun feel to the show. The show includes a huge amount of comedy, jokes, banter, mischief and so much more. “I get everyone doing the salsa. I understand that a lot of men are brought along by their wives, so it’s important to keep things diverse. That’s we also play all varieties of music, from Michael Bublé, Frank Sinatra, and much more.” Brendan was inspired to do the show by Strictly as so many people love the show, and ask where they can see or do something like it. There is a section of the show where the audience can ask questions, helping them direct the show too. “Audience participation is the most important aspect of the show. You get people asking raunchy questions, and people like to know Strictly gossip. Once we’ve had the audience participation on stage you can’t shut them up its fantastic and makes for a great show.” This audience participation is through a Q&A session and through the group dance, making the audience become part of the show. The whole show has been written, choreographed and organised in full by Brendan himself. The band and music are organised by the music director Barry Robinson, but Brendan does choose individual pieces.

There are six dancers that change costumes after almost every song. There are also nine changes for Brendan in total, which really brings out the glamour of ballroom dancing. Scott Cole also dances in the show, often making fun of his brother and playing jokes — in fact he often gets as great an audience reaction as Brendan. “It’s lovely to come together and see him get such a great reaction. I don’t think I could do the show without him.” says Brendan.
“
The show is all about being the best he can be. He wants people to be wowed and walk away thinking it was a great show.
“The best part is the Saturday night live performance, the adrenaline rush is amazing, and to win was fantastic.” says Brendan.
Since being on the show Brendan has been paired with a variety of celebrities,
The next tour will have new dances, new music and even more glamorous costumes. “The next show will be the best. I have a basic structure, and something I will work very hard on.” Talking about the dances and music they are accompanied with, he tells us that the easiest dance to learn from the beginning is the quickstep, and the most difficult is the Latin Samba due to the rhythm. “A new dance takes about one to two hours to learn. You listen to the music, and it tells you what to do.”
”
Organising the show took over a year and a half and is something I have never done before. The most daunting thing is that you are the boss of this massive production! The travelling can be hard, but it is so enjoyable at the same time...
Brendan has danced regularly from a young age. He and Scott grew up dancing together, yet took different directions in the world of dance. “My mum took me and my brother dancing, and at first I hated it, but it was the competitions I really loved and that made it really interesting.” Brendan stopped competing 10 years ago, but has such an incredible passion for dance that he has now started a string of dance academies.
94
Talking about Strictly Come Dancing, Brendan explains that he will be there next year should they want him. Brendan won the first ever show, and has since been very close to winning the final.
“The worst part for me is that it takes over your entire life. You’re on your feet all day throwing someone about, it takes it out of you physically.”
The show is intimate and personal, allowing the audience to get to know Brendan’s real character. “I seem to have been branded as the fiery one, but I’m actually the opposite. In the TV show you play a character, but I’m actually really laid back.”
“I had the benefit of being able to dance and I want others to be excited by it.”
including Kelly Brook and Lisa Snowdon. The training for strictly is full on, it takes weeks to build on, and it’s gruelling. Yet more and more celebrities take on the challenge, and it’s Brendan’s job to get them up to scratch. He has also appeared on other television shows including as a judge on other dance shows. “The good thing about being a judge is that you don’t get voted off!” Looking to the future, Brendan has the tour of his show, and will be writing a new production for a follow up tour.
“You have to be inspired by the music.” One of Brendan’s favourite dances is the foxtrot, and he also likes to dance to Purple Rain by Prince. “The secret to being a good dancer is to understand your body, the music and your partner. The best tip I can give is to be confident in yourself. It takes years and years to deliver the perfect dance.” n Live and Unjudged will be hosted at the Scunthorpe Bath Hall this February. Tickets cost £25-£30. Call 0844 854 2776 or see www.scunthorpetheatres.co.uk and www.brendancole.com.

Lincolnshire’s OWN ‘BILLY ELLIOT’ Thomas Arnold from Lincoln won a place at the renowned Central School of Ballet in London in May last year, and after six months of training at the School, Lincolnshire Pride has spoken Words: Anna Morrish. to Thomas to find out what it’s like to be a real life Billy Elliot... DANCE IN ITSELF is a physically demanding creative performance art. There is one dance style which is extremely tough on the human body, and seems to almost defy the laws of physics, with the performer taking off from the floor in flight. The dancer can be seen moving in swift movements across the floor, creating the illusion that the performer is gliding from one part of the stage to another without moving a muscle. Originating in the Italian Renaissance courts of the 15th century, and being further developed in France and Russia as a concert dance form, ballet has grown to become one of the most highly thought of dance forms. Ballet has recently become the center of attention in the media, with the popular Hollywood movie The Black Swan, featuring actress Natalie Portman highlighting the physical demands of the art itself. The film portrays ballet in a alternative light, rather than the sensual and poetic art that it truly is.
“
in classical ballet, as well as contemporary dance and musical theatre across the world.
later attended the Elmhurst School of Dance in Birmingham.
To win a place at the Central School of Ballet, applicants must go through an extremely competitive audition process. They must have the correct training, they must have the correct physique, and must have the correct aura of determination about them.
“I did start dancing at a young age, but I don’t think that to become a good dancer you need to start at the age of four necessarily, but if you start at the age of ten or eleven you can train your body well enough to then focus yourself on getting into one of the top two boarding schools that will take you on in dance. The main thing you need is determination, and you need to know that it really is what you want to do.”
Thomas originally found out he had won a place at the renowned school in May 2011, winning one of 38 places that were available to enthusiastic ballet students around the UK. He was chosen from more than 420 applicants, after competing through the various audition processes.
“Ballet is extremely tough, and is not meant for everyone. To progress in ballet you must have the correct physique.” “In ballet, a lot of the skill is how you look and how you hold yourself.” In two and a half years Thomas will be ready to embark on a career path following his attendance at the Central School of Ballet. Thomas hopes to find work in the UK with one of the five main ballet companies in this country. Many students from the school continue with ballet companies throughout Europe, including Barcelona and Estonia.
Ballet training can be strenuous. It’s physically demanding and takes a great amount of dedication. A lot of it is about how you look and how you hold yourself. I do like a good challenge though!
Thomas Arnold is one teenager that understands just how demanding an art it is, having secured a place at one of the best ballet schools in the country. Lincoln born Thomas won a coveted seat at the renowned Central School of Ballet in London at just 16 years of age, and is now studying a degree in the subject in the city full time. Central School of Ballet was established by Ann Stannard and the late Christopher Gable CBE in 1982. The founders wanted a school that truely valued the artistic expression in dance, as well as the importance of technique within the dance form. The Senior School course is one of the most comprehensive dance programmes in the country, and helps students go onto careers
“I found out after my parents, as my dad was the one who opened the letter back at home. They called me to let me know, and of course I was shocked.” said Thomas. “It was a pleasant surprise to find out I had won a place, but it felt like the next step really.” Thomas began dancing at the young age of four, beginning with ballet and then tap dance. “My mum did tap classes and I wanted to join in, so I went along and started dancing from then.” Thomas showed his love for the art from a young age, with his determination and passion for it ever increasing. At the age of six to the age of ten Thomas trained at Janet Revan’s School of Dance in Lincoln, and
”
“The training can be strenuous, it is physically demanding and takes great dedication.” says Thomas. “I prefer to dance to classical music, but I don’t have a preferred piece. I do like a challenge though.” he adds. A typical day starts at 8am with dance classes, and written research undertaken through the day at the School. Thomas then ends the day in a gym session, before finishing around 7pm. One tip he gives to anyone wishing to further themselves in dance, and to anyone wanting to get fit, is to strengthen your core, and perform lots of cardiovascular exercises. “I eat just like anyone else, for me it’s all about the training.” n

When/how did you first meet? We met in a Brazilian nightclub, on a night when neither of us had planned to go out and it just worked out to be one of those great times that happens when you least expect it. There were samba dancers and capoeira dancers who put on an amazing performance and created a really fun and energetic atmosphere. We danced the samba on the tables and bantered over mojitos. It didn’t take long before we exchanged numbers and went out on a proper date along the Southbank the following week. When in the relationship did he ‘pop the question?’ How did he propose? Dinesh was working in America for six months last year. I flew over to visit him in Boston around the time of our first anniversary. He took me out for an ‘anniversary’ dinner to a romantic restaurant overlooking Boston Harbour and afterwards we walked along by the marinas to Columbus Park where he went down on one knee and popped the question! He had brought the ring over from England and he had chosen amazingly well — apart from the size — so I wore it on my thumb for a week! Given it was October, it was freezing cold so we quickly jumped in a cab and headed to the famous Cheers bar. We ordered champagne to celebrate our
100
engagement but the barman said they didn’t stock any, before disappearing out the back. He re-emerged ten minutes later with two glasses of champagne from a nearby restaurant ‘on the house.’ Everyone sat at the bar turned around and congratulated us; a real ‘Norm!’ moment. What were the first things upon which you both decided? The venue! That was easy part! I grew up near Belvoir Castle on the Leicestershire, Lincolnshire border and had always thought it would be the perfect place for a fairytale wedding. As soon as Dinesh found out that the Duke’s cannons could be fired as part of the wedding celebrations and we were to cut the cake with the Duke’s Sword, there was no question jof looking elsewhere. Any differing ideas about your day? Once we found out that the emblem for Belvoir Castle was a peacock, I floated the idea of having a peacock theme as a bit of a joke and it was flatly rejected by Dinesh. However, word ‘somehow’ got around that the ladies should come in peacock colours and it wasn’t long before peacocks feathers featured on the invitations, in the bouquets and corsages, and on the table decorations — it did bring a smile to his face on the day!
3 - Pride FEB 115_Layout 2 16/01/2012 16:54 Page 101
Was planning your big day fraught or enjoyable? Did you both contribute ideas with equal enthusiasm? We did pretty well in dividing up the tasks and our mothers did a lot of the research and leg work so it wasn’t too stressful. My mum knew Katie Watts of Couture Cakes and Liz Foster who does amazing flower arrangements so I managed to spend a few weekends at home trying delicious cakes and choosing the flowers whilst enjoying a bottle of wine. Dinesh knows the creator of Octavia Plum invites so he worked on arranging all the wedding stationary. The biggest disagreement we had was over the making of our wedding rings: Dinesh thought it would be like CDT lessons at school but once we turned up at the Wedding Ring Workshop we both got stuck into melting, milling and filing and ended up with beautifully unique and elegant rings. How did it feel to walk down the aisle? Walking down the aisle was exciting and I
was so focused on Dinesh at the front of the room that I hardly saw our guests on either side. Neither of us were nervous in the run up to the wedding but as soon as I stood next to Dinesh I started to shake a little; he just squeezed my hand and smiled, which helped. We had written our own vows so that we could say words that really meant something to us and reflected our aspirations for our future together. It felt good to make true promises to each other in front of our loved ones — of course we have a copy of those vows... in case either of us needs reminding!

was exciting and I was so focused on Dinesh at the front of the room that I hardly saw our guests...
Where was your reception held? We held a wedding reception on the day at Belvoir Castle but we also had a further, larger reception at a hotel in London once we returned from honeymoon three weeks later so we could celebrate with those who couldn’t attend the actual wedding. Who did you choose for attendants and why? I chose my sister as my maid of honour. We’re really close and she made sure everything was perfect as we were getting ready.

My bridesmaids were some of my best friends from different times of my life; from secondary school, university, working life and living abroad. They are all fabulous and inspiring women who have all influenced me over the years and it was great to have them with me when we were getting ready. What was your dress like? My dress was designed by Ian Stuart and I found it at London Bride Couture in Pimlico. As soon as I put this dress on it felt perfect. The dress was a fitted vintage gown made of taffeta cangiante, covered with beaded French lace and had lace covered shoulder straps. Luckily I was able to dance in it, as Dinesh was worried that our first dance was out the window once he saw how long it was! Any friends or family you’d like to thank? We would like to thank our parents, our step sister Lucy for singing during the ceremony and our brother Ajit for a brilliant rendition of Wendy Cope’s poem, ‘After the Lunch.’ Anyone you want to recommend? We would recommend our award winning photographer and videographer Nick Grove, who did an amazing job and was the epitome of professionalism – we hardly knew he was there! Did you have a honeymoon? If so where, and most importantly, did you enjoy it? Our honeymoon was two and a half weeks long, but we managed to pack in three holidays!
First we had a relaxing week on the beach in Zanzibar before a week in Kilimanjaro. Walking through the night under the starry sky, then seeing the white glaciers loom out of the darkness before the sky turned red, then orange, and then feeling the heat of the sun on our faces was the most awesome experience. We ended our honeymoon in luxury in the Serengeti where we went on Safari for a few days. That too was an incredible experience and we would love to return to Africa at some point. How are you finding married life? Married life has so far treated us well, although we have had a busy month back at work, but we are excited about buying a house together. n
i
And finally, do you have any top tips that you can give for future brides? I would suggest practising your walk down the aisle. I wish I had savoured that a bit more and not been as keen to get to the altar! I had walked my sister down the aisle at her wedding last year and I held her back just as we got to the front of the church... we had almost broken into a sprint!

Wedding Style For the Whole Bridal Party With wedding dresses, bridesmaids’ dresses, groomsmen and chair covers all provided for, Haverholme Priory’s KMG Bridal Studio is just perfect for brides wanting to ensure everyone looks great on the big day! THE PERFECT LOOK for your big day is easier to achieve than you think. Owner of KMG Studios, Lindsey Gosling took over in April 2010 and two years later, the business has gone from strength to strength. Based in the beautiful Haverholme Priory near Sleaford, just next to wedding stationery supplier Dreams to Reality, the business stocks wedding dresses and dresses for bridesmaids, but also outfits for the groomsmen too. “The aim was to create somewhere that brides would find relaxed and convenient.” says Lindsey. “When my sister and I were shopping for her wedding dress we found the experience could be quite stressful. Our approach is different; we’re relaxed, and we really do take pleasure in making brides feel comfortable and happy!”

In addition, groomsmen are well catered for in a separate area from the bride herself with Peter Posh hirewear including tailcoats and Prince Edward jackets, waistcoats, cravats and ruches.
Bridal dresses at KMG include Sophia Tolli gowns, a high end designer renowned for unique and quirky designs — KMG and KMG is Lincolnshire’s Bridal Studio exclusive stockist. Meanwhile, Romantica gowns are traditional, popular and stylish with a good mix of A-line and column gowns.

From Dreams To Bridal Reality Offering brides-to-be the most elegant way to communicate, we this month meet businesswoman and designer Frances Roxburgh of Haverholme Priory based bespoke wedding stationery company, Dreams to Reality... ELEGANT, VINTAGE, STYLISH: just three words to describe the wedding stationery of one of Lincolnshire’s most impressive studios. A Lincolnshire girl through and through, owner Frances Roxburgh studied for a degree in law and forensics, but found her true calling when planning her wedding to husband Oly back in 2006. “We were looking around for wedding stationery, but it all seemed a little samey... nice but impersonal.” Frances took matters into her own hands, literally, by crafting beautiful stationery for her day, and was soon called upon by family and friends to create stationery for them, too.
Whilst some couples try to create their own stationery on their home PC, Frances says that her customers really do get what they pay for.
Leaving her day job in November 2008 to create her own studio, the business woman’s The stationer recommends budgeting between list of happy customers grew until £250 and £500 — which is good value Frances and her team relocated to considering Frances’s materials are always of Haverholme Priory in July last year, a much higher quality, supplemented conveniently situated next to wedding with hand-finished details such as dress studio KMG Bridal. Make Your Dream Wedding a Reality A WEDDING OR BABY NAMING CEREMONY conducted by an independent celebrant is a blank canvas waiting to be painted. It’s an exchange of vows and an exchanging of ring with accompanying verses can be chosen by you and you can have the opportunity of selecting your promises or composing your own words. These ceremonies can be carried out at a suitable location chosen by you to make your day special, following a formal civil ceremony held at a register office. This format is based on the French tradition where all weddings, by law, have to take place in the register office and are then concluded by a ceremony in the church or hotel afterwards. By celebrating the marriage in this manner, you are able to invite more guests than is normally permitted to attend a register office wedding. Where to Hold a Ceremony Unlike register office ceremonies, you can hold your celebration at a location of your choice including: your own garden or home, a favourite restaurant, a hotel or on the beach.
Making couples’ dreams a reality, Independent Celebrant Philip Spicksley outlines how a civil ceremony can overcome some of the legal and practical limitations of where to hold your special day...
Celebrations Following Weddings Abroad Nowadays it is popular for couples to fly to a foreign country to get married. When they return to the UK they often feel the necessity of having a blessing ceremony to which they can invite all their family and friends who missed out on the wedding. This is another instance when the services of an independent celebrant can be enlisted; the ceremony can take place early evening and be followed by a party. Wedding Ceremonies Following a Register Office Ceremony Some couples do not reveal that the wedding is being celebrated before the main wedding reception. The few people that go to the register office and the main body of the guests at the reception may be kept in secret about more personalised ceremony conducted prior to the reception and allows all your guests to be included in your special day, rather that the ones who are able to attend the register office.
A civil Perhaps a register office celebration can provide a registrar to overcome legal or cannot go out to a licensed for practical difficulties weddings venue at the time The type of celebration is ideal you want to hold your ceremony. when you for those who do not want a church wedding or the expense You may also find difficulty in marry... of hiring an extravagant venue, but securing the service of a register. a more informal celebration in their own garden or smaller function suite. Sports clubs like Lincoln City and Scunthorpe United are even offering supporters the opportunity to have their ceremony on their pitches. Children Included If the happy couple have children from a previous relationship, then a ceremony can be designed which is not only a wedding celebration but also incorporates the whole family.
By including the children, the celebration will be of cementing the family together. Philip also provides baby naming services for the whole family to enjoy too.
Some local authorities are cutting back on registers and carrying out fewer and fewer weddings. In these circumstances couples can ensure that their wedding is on the day they want it and at a place they want, by engaging an independent celebrant. Couples may wish to have their weddings in the evening and follow through with an evening function instead of having a full afternoon and evening party. In these circumstances the ceremony can take place at any time in the evening. Whatever your wishes for your special day, there are ways and means by which to make your dreams come true, by choosing an independent celebrant. n

New You
We’ll create a new you: that’s the promise of a new health and beauty business near East Heckington. Serendipity’s Mandy-Louise and Alex Walker have created a haven of tranquillity just off the A17 at Elm Grange Studios, promising innovative treatments never before seen in Lincolnshire... Words: Rob Davis.
SERENDIPITY: the term for a happy occurrence, like finding the ideal place for your new health and beauty business purely by chance. For 20 years Mandy-Louise Walker has been conducting health and beauty treatments across Lincolnshire, operating on a mobile basis. With her young children recently beginning full time education, Mandy began to look for permanent premises and happened upon Elm Grange Studios near East Heckington last November. Less than a month later she and husband Alex opened Serendipity Health & Beauty, offering a range of holistic, beauty and aesthetic treatments. Holistic Health Never before seen in Lincolnshire, Mandy offers LavaShell and LavaBamboo warming massages, using heat to soothe the body’s muscles. In addition, she and Alex can perform Indian Head massage, Reiki, Hopi ear candling and a range of body wraps and massages. Beauty Treatments Mandy’s beauty treatments include hair removal with threading and waxing, ‘HD’ style lash and brow treatments, plus spray and cosmetic tanning. Treatments at Serendipity use Dermalogica products, with facial treatments from £30 to £60, plus a range of manicures and pedicures using OPI products. Also available are gel nails from Gelish by Harmony, cured under a UV lamp for long-lasting nails which resist wear and chipping, lasting up to three weeks. Aesthetics In addition to the usual health and beauty treatments, Serendipity is about to unveil a whole range of aesthetic treatments unavailable elsewhere in the area. These include microdermabrasion, hair removal with IPL lasers, and the availability of Flabélos machine used to aid weight loss.
Also due to make an appearance at the venue is the revolutionary LipoLight treatment, which uses LED lights to provide weight loss — users report that they can drop a dress size simply by using the machine for a course of treatments. “We’re offering some really impressive treatments and we’re constantly training to ensure the service we offer is as relaxing and as effective as possible.” says Mandy. “We will also launch monthly specials in February — featured treatments with 25% off — and our Platinum Membership scheme; a £100 annual fee that provides 25% off all treatments and 50% off monthly specials. For Valentine’s Day, we’re offering the opportunity to buy your loved one a gift voucher for £50 or over and receive a complimentary half-body massage or for over a £100, a full body massage. Either of which can be used yourself or passed onto your loved one!” n Serendipity is based at Elm Grange Studios, East Heckington, Boston PE20 3QF. Call for bookings on 01529 469542 or 07830 821821. The Pre-School of Choice for those seeking Quality Education
An Interview with Emma McClarkin MEP and Our Representative for Lincolnshire and the East Midlands It was a first for the College when shortly before Christmas two of our 6th form students were involved in a video conference call with Brussels. Declan Wilkinson and Daniel Higginson are currently studying Business in King Edward’s 6th Form. As part of an assignment required them to interview someone successful they thought of Emma who had visited the college on a previous occasion because they had been impressed by her approachability and willingness to engage with the students.

quickly made them feel at ease. The interview started with general questions about Emma’s own time at school at school and whether or not it had been a positive experience. She replied that her time at school had been very enjoyable and mentioned how useful studying French had been now she is in her current role.
Emma was first elected at the European election in 2009 as a Conservative Party MEP. She was only 30, making her the youngest British MEP.
One of the things our students were keen to know was what advice she would give to women in order to be successful in what still is a predominantly male profession and whether, given her age, she has found it difficult at times to be taken seriously. Emma’s advice to women was not to be daunted by that fact but to do what you love and to play to your strengths.
Emma was a very obliging interviewee and was happy to answer all the students’ questions and her geniality
Emma was a delight to interview and the students would like to take this opportunity to thank her again for giving up her time so willingly.

AUDI A4 2.0TDi £26,555 For: Well equipped, build quality. Against:320ED has economy edge. CONSCIOUS of the imminent arrival of its arch enemy, Audi has given its A4 a mid-life facelift, with more efficient engines and an updated interior. A revised 2.0TDi engine allows Audi to undercut BMW’s 320ED model on price but it can’t quite match it for economy and performance — CO2 is 112g, whilst 60mph takes 9.3 seconds. As with BMW, avoid sporty models for better ride comfort. You’ll be endowed with climate and cruise control, but a £1,100 Technik upgrade will add sat nav and leather seats. n

Until BMW reveals its 4x4 3-Series, Vauxhall is the only model to offer all wheel drive on its family saloon, but whilst its sport tourer derivative offers a more stylish estate, its boot space is hindered by the car’s sloping roofline.
A great looking car that can compete respectably in its sector, the Insignia isn’t a bad car, but rivals from names like BMW are just as affordable and are cheaper to run. n
Each of the family cars featured here rival their German counterparts but tend to offer more standard equipment and better value for money... is it still worth paying a premium for a luxury car badge? High MPG, Low Tax Saloons
VOLVO S60 1.6 DRIVe SE Lux £27,695 For: Very well-equipped. Great safety options. Against: Slower than rivals featured here. AN INTERESTING ALTERNATIVE to mainstream executive brands, Volvo’s S60 represents a more stylish, less stuffy model from the maker traditionally associated with safety and sensible saloons. As a 1.6 engine, its eco-tuned diesel unit is smaller and slower than its rivals’ engines, but with 65mpg combined economy and more than 70mpg achieved on motorways, it’s more economical and cheap as a company car. Inside, sat nav, leather, parking sensors, Bluetooth and climate control create a luxurious experience, and Volvo’s quirky cabin with a ‘floating’ centre console is
a contemporary, well-trimmed and comfortable place to be — Volvo also has a reputation for designing better seats than any other car manufacturer. Performance suffers from the eco-friendly adjustments, with 60mph reached in more than 10 seconds, but refinement and ride are both first class and the Volvo makes an interesting, respectable alternative to eco-friendly offerings from, mainstream executive and family car brands. The car is also available as an estate, badged V60, and whilst it’s more contemporary than Volvos of old, the firm has retained an emphasis on safety with adaptive cruise control, lane departure, blind spot monitoring and pedestrian detection systems all designed to work alongside the driver in preventing accidents. n
New Model Roundup... NEXT MONTH’S new registration promises a slew of new models designed to tempt buyers. Honda’s Civic is aiming to take a slice of the C-sector currently dominated by the Focus and Golf, with a more conservative design and greater equipment. A new rival in the form of the Mercedes B-Class will provide additional choice with a high quality cabin. Meanwhile, BMW’s 3-Series is an all-new model with four engines at launch and hybrid, estate and 4x4 models to follow. New 4x4s include the Ford Kuga and Mercedes M-Class, and Porsche will release the Cajun to rival Range Rover’s Evoke. Look out, too, for the Mini Paceman coupé model, Citroen’s DS5 family car and hot hatches from Vauxhall, Seat, Peugeot and MG, as well as Volkswagen’s new Beetle. Electric vehicles for 2012 include Renault’s Fluence, Toyota’s Prius Plug In, Chevrolet’s Volt and Vauxhall’s Ampera. n

The Chattertons Family Team... Offering a Specialist Service to the County WHEN A RELATIONSHIP BREAKS DOWN the resulting situation can place a huge amount of stress on the whole family. At such times the assistance of a Family Lawyer is required who can guide you through in a calm and professional manner, and provide practical solutions to problems which can, at first, seem insurmountable. Chattertons Solicitors are one of the largest firms in Lincolnshire and have a specialist Family Law Department offering just this sort of support. The work of a Family Lawyer is varied, and the Chattertons team is regularly called upon to help in situations such as Divorce, Civil Partnership disputes, and disputes between separating co-habitees. This can involve resolving the financial issues arising from separation including a transfer or sale of the family home, pension sharing and attachment, how the family business might continue post separation, cohabitation agreements, pre-marital agreements, disputes between parents over their children, including contact and residence, and applications by grandparents in relation to contact and residence with their grandchildren. The family team is headed by Eleanor Thornton, a partner in the firm and a widely known and highly regarded family lawyer, who is based at the Sleaford office. Eleanor says, “We are able to provide help and assistance if you are ending a relationship, embarking on a new relationship, dividing property or finances or have issues concerning children. My team comprises well trained and experienced family solicitors and lawyers who cover the whole county, in Sleaford, Boston, Grantham, Lincoln, Spalding, Horncastle, Stamford and across the border into Newark. We offer a truly specialist service in all areas of family law.” Chattertons has invested heavily in the technology necessary to ensure that wherever clients are based in the county the service is streamlined and efficient, and recent developments at the firm have consolidated this county wide presence. The recent merger with Spalding based firm Knipe Miller has strengthened Chattertons’
existing presence in Spalding and in the south of the county where the firm already has other established offices in Boston and Stamford. Eleanor added, “The combined practices now operate from 12 Broad Street in Spalding and have almost doubled Chattertons size in the town.” Eleanor’s role incorporates the Spalding office with her Sleaford base, and experienced Legal Executive Patrick Skells is also on hand to offer family law advice from the Spalding office. The firm’s family work at Boston and Horncastle is covered by Solicitor Robert Smith who is a Partner in the firm and divides his time between the two offices. Along with the other members of the Family Law team, Robert is able to offer a free 30 minute appointment by request at both offices, giving clients the opportunity to explore broad issues specific to their case prior to instructing the firm.
office, have recently taken on the challenge of building on and strengthening the service for clients in the Newark area. Jo and Liz will be available to see clients at Newark and are both enthusiastic at the prospect. Liz said, “Newark is a town I know well, and I have many existing connections there. Jo and I are both really excited at the prospect of developing the practice there.” Family breakdown is one of the most stressful experiences anyone will suffer. People often suffer both emotionally and financially. The Chattertons’ family team is able to offer expert and confidential advice, with the sensitivity, support and guidance necessary to help resolve difficulties as quickly as possible. n
The firm strives constantly to improve the service available for clients. Solicitor Liz Graham, based at the Lincoln office just off Doddington Road, and Legal Executive Jo Chidlow, based at the firm’s Grantham
