The kick-off event for public input into the Port Stanley Harbour Secondary Plan took place at The Village Square Coffee House at the corner of Main and Bridge Streets. It was a fun meeting, if a little bit crowded. The meeting was sponsored by Central Elgin with both Mayor David Marr and Port Stanley Councillor Dan McNeil in attendance.

Open note to the community of West Lorne/West Elgin I would like to introduce you to a business that has been in continuous operation since 1932. The business I am introducing is Branch #221 of the Royal Canadian Legion.

The mandate of the Royal Canadian Legion is to support Veterans and their dependents, and the community we live in. Membership is open to the public for anyone wishing to help in this important work.

The annual Poppy Campaign which will be starting on October 27th this year and

will continue until November 11th is one of the ways we accomplish this mandate. All money raised in the Poppy Campaign is used for this important work. No funds raise in the Poppy Campaign are used to pay Legion bills or buy supplies for the Legion Club room.

The Legion Club room is open every day from 2:30 till 7:00, and is open to the public. Membership in the Legion is not necessary to enjoy our hospitality but please think of joining. Tuesdays we have fun darts from 7 till whenever. On the second and fourth Fridays we serve a meal from 11:30am to 1:00pm. The cost of this meal is $10:00 per serving. Take out is available by calling 519-768-1890. Please watch the paper or read the sign at the corner of John Street for the main course. The first Sunday of each month we have a breakfast from 9:00am till 12:00 noon. The cost of the breakfast is $8:00 per serving. Saturday we have burgers and fries from 12 till 2:00pm.

Prices are available at the bar. On Friday night we have started euchre night at 7 p.m. and our meat draw from 8:00 pm till whenever.

The Branch is running an exciting new game called “Catch The Ace”, detail at the bar.

Please come out and support the Branch because without the community support we will not be here. The work of the Royal Canadian Legion will continue just not in West Elgin/ West Lorne. If you once were a member please think about becoming involved again.

Tradition of spring cleaning With spring finally on its way, many people take part in the tradition of spring cleaning, de-cluttering and purging the old to make way for the new.

Our homes are often the main focus of our spring cleaning, but it’s not just a one season job – cleaning, tidying, decluttering, sweeping, cooking and taking the garbage out are daily or weekly tasks that can prove to be quite a challenge for many seniors or adults with a disability especially when dealing with additional challenges of mobility and health. VON’s Home Help program will alleviate some of these challenges by providing essential homemaking services that allow seniors and adults with a disability a way to maintain their home.

Clients impacted by the program report that “this [Home Help] has made our

life easier,” and “without this service, I would not be able to stay in my home.”

Clients who have other commitments and obligations appreciate the extra help this program offers with the day to day tasks they are finding more difficult to complete: “With your service, I am able to get other things done, especially freeing me up so I can take better care of my husband and I’m able to get some rest from my busy schedule.”

Home Help services can include: light housekeeping (vacuuming, dusting, sweeping, emptying the garbage etc.), meal preparation, laundry, grocery shopping or errands. Services are delivered by trained staff, can be regular or flexible and are available Monday through to Friday between 8:30 am – 4:30 pm for a small fee.

trol of Lake Erie in 1813, driving the British out of western Ontario, killing the Native American leader Tecumseh, and breaking the military power of his confederacy. The war was overseen by British army officers like Isaac Brock and Charles de Salaberry with the assistance of First Nations and loyalist informants, most notably Laura Secord.

The War ended with no boundary changes thanks to the Treaty of Ghent of 1814, and the Rush–Bagot Treaty of 1817. A demographic result was the shifting of the destination of American migration from Upper Canada to Ohio, Indiana and Michigan, without fear of Indian attacks. After the war, supporters of Britain tried to repress the republicanism that was common among American immigrants to Canada. The troubling memory of the war and the American invasions etched itself into

the consciousness of Canadians as a distrust of the intentions of the United States towards the British presence in North America.

Rebellions and the Durham Report The rebellions of 1837 against the British colonial government took place in both Upper and Lower Canada. In Upper Canada, a band of Reformers under the leadership of William Lyon Mackenzie took up arms in a disorganized and ultimately unsuccessful series of small-scale skirmishes around Toronto, London, and Hamilton.

The Burning of the Parliament Buildings in Montreal −1849 In Lower Canada, a more substantial rebellion occurred against British rule. Both English- and French-Canadian rebels, sometimes using bases in the neutral United States, fought several skirmishes against the authorities.

The towns of Chambly and Sorel were taken by the rebels, and Quebec City was isolated from the rest of the colony. Montreal rebel leader Robert Nelson read the "Declaration of Independence of Lower Canada" to a crowd assembled at the town of Napierville in 1838. The rebellion of the Patriote movement was defeated after battles across Quebec. Hundreds were arrested, and several villages were burnt in reprisal.

Between the Napoleonic Wars and 1850, some 800,000 immigrants came to the colonies of British North America, mainly from the British Isles, as part of the great migration of Canada. These included Gaelic-speaking Highland Scots displaced by the Highland Clearances to Nova Scotia and Scottish and English settlers to the Canadas, particularly Upper Canada. The Irish Famine of the 1840s significantly increased the pace of Irish Catholic immigration to British North America, with over 35,000 distressed Irish landing in Toronto alone in 1847 and 1848.

was a puppy till he was old enough to enter the rigorous final training stage.

Tundra had a very unique foster home since he was raised by 5 young ladies, in a shared apartment, while they all pursued their educational goals.

They did an exceptional job of providing Tundra with a loving environment where he was socialized; house trained and given the initial life lessons that prepared him to become a successful service dog.

The LIONS Foundation of Canada Dog Guides provide service dogs; at no cost, to Canadians with physical or medical situations qualifying for assistance.

Property values in Port Burwell are on the rise!

The Municipality of Bayham is committed to making Port Burwell beaches more attractive and has recently made several upgrades to the East Beach parking area allowing for more organized and increased parking space. New benches are being installed downtown by the Municipality and the vendors are getting ready for the increased tourism flow.

As of late, there have been many newcomers to our Port arriving from many destinations. Any homes that have been listed for sale are being gobbled up and quick. There is now a very limited inventory of homes for sale. The house pricing in Port Burwell and surrounding area have always been a bargain, but this is changing rapidly due to the increased interest and people who have seen the potential of our little Port town.

In the last week or so another large commercial property has been purchased for future development. The developer is planning to build in the next 3-5 years.

Many of the new residents have seen the potential of the town with its wonderful beaches, great little shops and eateries. The Port Burwell Provincial Park is booked solid for most of the summer months. Port Burwell has so much to offer!

Public Engagement and Communications Plan The Municipality of Central Elgin (Municipality), supported by Dillon Consulting (Dillon), is developing the Secondary Plan to lay out the long term vision and plan for the repurposing of the Port Stanley Harbour lands and their planned integration with the adjacent waterfront areas in Port Stanley.

The Port Stanley Harbour Area Secondary Plan (Harbour Plan) will build on previous work to identify land use designations and policies that will guide detailed planning and recommend the location of specific land uses, such as parks, recreation, retail and tourist commercial, housing (both primary and second/vacation homes) and infrastructure investment.

The Harbour Plan will be the statutory plan needed to take the harbour lands from vision to action.

Through a community-wide public dialogue, the engagement and communications process for the Harbour Plan will contribute to the development of a plan that has a high degree of community support.

April brings spring showers, hopes of summer and of course IBS awareness month. Irritable Bowel Syndrom (IBS) is a chronic, often debilitating, disorder of the gut. Symptoms include Abdominal pain, Bloating, Constipation and/or Diarrhea.

There are no medical tests to confirm or rule out a diagnosis and yet it is the most common gastrointestinal condition worldwide. IBS is defined by abdominal pain and altered bowel habits for a period of at least three months and the incidence of IBS in Canada is between 12-20%. IBS is more common in women than men. Symptoms of IBS often develop in patients before age 35 and almost always before age 50. Initial onset of IBS-like symptoms in a patient older than age 50 can be a red flag, possibly indicating another, potentially more serious, condition. Symptoms can be triggered by some foods or stressful life events. Many patients end up going through a long process of eliminating various foods and still do not have significant relief.

While there is no cure for IBS, a number of therapies and strategies can be used to control the symptoms. Increasing fiber is one of the most common recommendations made to IBS patients, with the intent of reducing pain and regulating bowel function. However, studies show that insoluble dietary fiber, like wheat bran, is unlikely to improve symptoms. Soluble fibre such as psyllium (Metamucil) works best, but may lead to gas, bloating and abdominal distention if added too

rapidly. A slow introduction is best. Limited data suggest that peppermint oil, thought to relax smooth muscle in the gut, might improve symptoms of IBS in about one out of three patients treated. Side effects reported in studies were rare.

The usual dose of peppermint oil for adults with IBS is 0.2 to 0.4 mL given three times daily, in enteric-coated liquid-filled capsules. When examining probiotics, 1 in 4 people saw improvement in their symptoms. Probiotics with Bifidobacteria appear to be most effective.

Other therapies include loperamide (immodium®) for those individuals with predominantly diarrhea related IBS (IBS-D). Bulk forming laxatives like Metamucil are preferred to stimulant laxatives such as ex-lax® or senokot®. Prescription medications have also been used-options can be discussed with your doctor or nurse practitioner.

Pooled data show that psychological therapies (e.g., cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy, hypnotherapy) can improve overall symptoms of IBS. However, relaxation therapy alone does not offer any benefit. Take care of yourselves and each other.

LENSLA Held Its Second Annual General Meeting The Lake Erie North Shore Landowners Association (LENSLA) held its second annual general meeting Tuesday evening at Port Stanley’s Royal Canadian Legion. The dinner meeting was attended by about fifty people.

LENSLA is a group of individuals with properties along Elgin County’s Lake Erie Shoreline who share an interest in good stewardship of the land.

Another surrender story..........Mats and Luke were surrendered after their Mom downsized into a trailer.

The thought was that the two, supposedly indoor boys, would not be happy in the trailer park with the large number of dogs that lived there. Both boys are, understandably scared and confused. Mats is coping by hiding himself under his blanket as much as possible. Luke prefers to cram himself into the corner of their cage. Mats is a 10 year old, declawed tabby and white male with gorgeous green eyes who quickly warms up when he is being petted. 8 year old Luke is mostly black with white toes and a white goatee and is also front declawed.
