IPM NEWS international IPM news and programs Canada: Anti-Resistance Refugia Practices Adopted A recent survey revealed that nearly 90 percent of more than 1,700 corn growers in Canada's Ontario, Manitoba, and Quebec provinces have voluntarily adopted key refugia practices as an integral component of planting transgenic Bt corn devised to combat crop damage caused by Ostrinia nubilalis (European corn borer). The two critical insect resistance management (IRM) practices gauged by the survey involved devoting at least 20 percent of corn land to non-transgenic varieties, and second, arranging transgenic and non-transgenic plantings to be no further than 400 m. (440 yds.) apart, or even closer. The survey results appear in an article, "Voluntary Refuge Program Draws Overwhelming Support," by O. Roberts (Univ. of Guelph) in the March 2002 edition of ONTARIO CORN PRODUCER (on-line version) at . The survey was commissioned by the Canadian Corn Pest Coalition (CCPC). The Coalition has developed and promulgated several IRM strategies and carried out a monitoring, education, and communication program to gain acceptance. In 2001, Bt transgenic corn accounted for at least 35 percent of the 567,000 ha. (1.4 million ac.) of land planted with corn in Canada. The CPCC study showed that a significant percentage of producers growing Bt corn had a high level of awareness of IRM requirements. Now the CPCC seeks answers to why a small percentage of growers have not adopted the recommended IRM tactics and joined in the effort to avoid blunting the effectiveness of Bt technology. excerpted, with thanks, from the Ontario Corn Producers' Association website. 100 An Oh So Brief Editorial Note 100: a daily newspaper cranks out that many issues before the end of April each year. Weekly magazines need nearly two full years to reach the century point. But for a monthly newsletter, publishing 100 issues requires over eight years and thus represents a fairly significant landmark. Hence, it is appropriate in this 100th issue of IPMnet NEWS to salute you, the supportive readers representing 122 countries, and your contributions of information reflected in the NEWS. Many other existing periodical sources include IPM information; still others focusing on IPM have flared into print, only to wither and disappear well before eight years elapse. HOW TO DO IT RIGHT With a clearly stated title, SAFETY EQUIPMENT HANDBOOK, A Practical Guide to Pesticide Safety Requirements, offers an informative, up-to-date summary that, while geared to UK conditions, is globally applicable. The 2002, softbound work makes extensive use of full color photos and a very easy to follow, highly attractive format to cover all aspects of pesticide safety ranging from personal safety equipment to handling and disposal. Various sections also offer useful information for sources of safety equipment as well as important regulations and other data sources. The 74-page work was edited by pesticide application authority T. Southcombe. Tucked inside each copy is a freestanding, 4-page, plastic laminated leaflet, PROTECTING YOURSELF, The BCPC (British Crop Protection Council) Guide to Using Pesticides Safely. THREE TITLES FROM ACIAR ACIAR, the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research, recently published several new titles including: BIOLOGICAL CONTROL OF WATER HYACINTH 2, a 91-page study by M.H. A CASE OF POLLEN FLOW The complex and unique case of herbicide resistance transfer that occurred among Brassica napus varieties in Canada is succinctly reviewed and analyzed by J. Westwood in, "Cross-pollination Leads to Triple Herbicide Resistance," pg. 3-5, in the March 2001 issue of ISB NEWS REPORT. NEW ON-LINE IPM COURSE The Bankok-based Asia-Pacific Regional Technology Centre (APRTC) has launched a new on-line course, "Introduction to Integrated Pest Management," as part of its e-Learning series. Topics cover: the definition, history, and development of IPM; fundamental concepts; range of tools available to the IPM practitioner; IPM strategies specifically tailored for conditions of the Asian-Pacific region; and a summary of where to find IPM information and resources. APRTC director R.T. Raab noted that, "this course deals with one of the most fundamental concepts associated with sustainable agriculture." Participants, Dr. Raab said, have "an opportunity to interact with a diverse group of experienced Asia-Pacific agricultural professionals." Featured Paper Herbicide vs. Handweeding Studies conducted in the savannah of West Africa revealed that using herbicide to control Imperata cylindrica (speargrass) in maize and cassava provided better control than handweeding, as well as higher gross economic benefits. In their paper, "Response of Speargrass (Imperata cylindrica) to Cover Crops Integrated with Handweeding and Chemical Control in Maize and Cassava," D. Chikoye and colleagues concluded that, because of the need for repeated handweeding of I. cylindrica, their results suggest herbicide-based weed management was the optimal approach, especially in areas with labor shortages. *> D. U.S. REGIONAL PEST MANAGEMENT CENTERS news, developments New Insect Pest Threatens U.S. Soybeans Populations of a newly identified insect pest have exploded from virtually unknown to a full blown crop threat in the U.S. midwest and northeast. The unwelcome arrival, Aphis glycines Matsumura (soybean aphid), was first noted in soybean fields during 2000, but now has been found in 16 states.
