IPM NEWS international IPM news and programs Nobel Laureate Calls for IPM IPM is on Nobel Laureate Norman Borlaug's short list for actions needed to help address a "building catastrophe" on African farms that are "locked in a downward spiral" with declining crop yields, depleted soil nutrients, and a need to plant ever greater land areas to meet increasing food demands. In a recently published commentary, Dr. Borlaug said that, "Africa desperately needs the simple, effective high-yield farming systems that have made the first world's food supply safe and secure, and kept its wild species from extinction: chemical fertilizers, improved seeds bred for local conditions, and integrated pest management (with pest- icides)." These "basics" are needed to stave off malnourishment and wide-spread hunger and illness, he noted. Borlaug believes that, just as with the Green Revolution of the 1960's, there is an enormous global challenge to significantly expand food production while making an effort to "save the planet's wild- lands." Chem Sales Down, GM Up in 2001 Conventional" crop protection product sales fell 7.4 percent to US.8 billion in 2001, while sales of biotechnology-related pro- ducts (including sales of genetically modified [GM] crops and their associated technology fees) surged 12.9 percent, to US billion, according to recent reports. Among major agricultural chemical companies, most logged sales declines in conventional ag chem products last year, intensified by product line divestitures and global monetary conditions. Several medium-size firms reported sales increases compared to 2000, mainly due to product line acquisitions. The leading agchem companies in millions of US dollar sales were reported to be: Syngenta, US,323; Bayer, US,278 (but expected to rise to number 1 with acquisition of Aventis CropScience); Monsanto, US,212; DuPont, US,842; BASF, US,114: Dow Chemical, US,842; and, Makhteshim-Agan, US4. excerpted, with thanks, from various sources.
Pachyderm Pests Prove Persistent Scouting, traps, mechanical control, feeding deterrents. Why don't they call it IPM as they should?" rightly asks IPM scientist E.G. Rajotte, commenting on a multi-tactic plan to manage what is doubtlessly the largest of vertebrate pests threatening crops, Elephas maximus (Asian elephant). A team of scientists has launched a unique initiative to reduce crop raiding by Asian elephants in an Indonesian province. The scheme integrates guard towers built out of local self-rooting tree trunks then wrapped in barbed wire, tripwires, and harmless-but-fiery chili juice impregnated ropes that cause a powerful but short term irrita- tion in the eyes and nasal membranes which is unpleasant and temporar- ily incapacitating. Conflicts between farmers and elephants have been raging for some time. Elephants confined to ever smaller forest blocks increasingly venture into farms for food. The results have been disastrous: farmers lose their crops and sometimes their lives, and elephants are either killed, or captured and confined to "training centers." Once alerted by the tripwires, guards in the towers will use sirens, spotlights, whistles, and firecrackers to persuade the pachy- derms to move off. For particularly aggressive animals, such as soli- tary males, a vehicle fitted with a siren and spotlight will be called to herd animals back into the forest. In areas where vehicle access is impossible, five tamed elephants and their handlers will keep wild elephants at bay. THE FUTURE OF WEED MANAGEMENT In the preface to his new publication, MOLECULAR BIOLOGY OF WEED CONTROL, J. Gressel sets the stage by directly stating that "Weeds are the major crop protection constraint to food production." In between that clear pronouncement and a massive reference list, the hardbound volume critically assesses the impact of new molecular biology tech- niques on the science of weed management and also points out areas in which weed science has influenced molecular biology. A wide ranging discussion addresses aspects of both engineered and natural herbicide resistance. BIOPESTICIDES DATABASE From a description of microbial biopesticides (MB) including mode of action and spectrum of control, to a global listing of MB manufacturers and sup- pliers, a newer website offers a wide range of useful information and pertinent links. The "Database of Microbial Biopesticides" (DMB) ippc.orst.edu developed by W.I. Bajwa, forms one of the newer elements in the suite of data and knowledge bases that comprise the well regarded Database of IPM Resources. GROWERS REPORT THEIR IPM ACTIONS In their own words, nine west- ern Canadian canola (Brassica napus or B. rapa) growers report their pest management activities for one growing season in a straight-forward web feature, "IPM Jour- nal." Each growers' entry follows a chronological format and is rich in personalized experiences and a variety of approaches for coping with weeds (the major problem), insects, and diseases. EQUIPMENT, MATERIALS, & SERVICES SPECIMEN HOLDER IMPROVES VIEWING A new, low cost specimen holder for minute species has been de- veloped to aid in low-temperature scanning electron microscopy. De- signed by E. Erbe, the device is made from scrap metal and allows a 90-degree tilt for observation of the edges of flat specimens. It also can be used to obtain
side, front, and back views of specimens normal- ly mounted with just the top side exposed. Rotating samples in the new holder between each observation/recording yields a series of micrographs comprising a 360-degree view of the object/specimen. Whereas standard holders permit only limited viewing and can cost several hun- dred dollars, Erbe's holder was inexpensively made and has far more versatility. Featured Paper Search for a Plant-Based Vole Repellent Rodenticies and herbicides are the current primary means of con- trolling voles, a major vertebrate pest in orchards and other crops. P.D. Curtis, et al conducted research on candidate plant species that might be used as a non-lethal, but effective, repellent. U.S. REGIONAL PEST MANAGEMENT CENTERS news, developments Pest Management Plan Session Slated Growers, commodity leaders, researchers, and others will gather 25-27 June 2002 at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, CANADA, to convene an International Pest Management Strategic Plan (PMSP) for Dry Peas, Lentils, and Chickpeas, with a goal of identifying research, regu- latory, and education needs for pest management in these crops. The event will follow a workshop format and draw participants from both western Canadian provinces and western U.S. states, accord- ing to information from the U.S. Western Region Pest Management Center (WRPMC). Discussion will follow a pest-by-pest approach to cover all
current pest management practices as well as those under development. Space is available for observers who wish to have a seat in the audience area.
