IPMnet NEWS December 1998, Issue no. 60 ISSN: 1523-7893 Š Copyright 2005 IPM NEWS --- international IPM news and programs I. IPM NEWS / APPLICATIONS international IPM news and programs IPM Emphasized for Asian Vegetable Production Integrated Pest Management, an important current focus, also forms a clearly articulated core for future programs and projects envisioned by the Taiwan-based, internationally operational Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center (AVRDC) as spelled out in its recent publication, VEGETABLES FOR POVERTY ALLEVIATION AND HEALTHY DIETS, A Plan for 1998-2002. According to the multi-program plan, IPM is expected to be "made an integral part of production systems." AVRDC, in collaboration with national agricultural research systems, anticipates establishing "prototype IPM units making timely use of a variety of insect and disease control practices," strategies that will include use of improved insect- and disease-resistant lines developed at AVRDC. The Center also aims to work with cooperators to improve "community-based IPM Programs for pest control." More refined IPM component technologies biocontrol, trapping, and other tactics will be pursued for those disease and insect pests that are priority targets in veg- etable production on small- to medium-size farms. In making the case for accelerating IPM research, as spelled out in the plan (publication 98-476), AVRDC points to the economic gains already realized from a system it developed for reducing the impact of Plutella xylostella L. (diamondback moth) while cutting use of insecticide. Application has declined in Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines, with the latter country realizing an annual saving of US million, as well as less environmental impact, notes AVRDC. Teetes as chairman, Board of Directors, and appointed R.E. Ford as Executive Director. Teetes is an entomologist at Texas A&M Univ. (USA), and Ford, a plant pathologist and 20-year CICP Board member, recently retired from the faculty at the Univ. of Illinois (USA). Current executive director G.A. Schafers, after four years of dedicated service, opted for a new
position leading the Consortium's Africa programs. M. Kogan, Oregon State Univ. (USA), was elected Vice President and A. Alvarez, Univ. of Hawaii (USA), became Treasurer. In addition to changes in leadership, delegates affirmed CICP's continued support and development of IPMnet which has successfully completed five years of activity pioneering global electronic dissemination of IPM-related information. The study also found that local farmers had accurate knowledge of key pest insects, but knew little about natural enemies and biocontrol. > I.O. VAST STUDY OF SOFT SCALE INSECTS A recently published massive, two-volume study addresses SOFT SCALE INSECTS - THEIR BIOLOGY, NATURAL ENEMIES AND CONTROL, and presents a contemporary portrait of the Coccidae, one of about 20 families in the scale insect superfamily Coccoidea. The hardbound work (476 and 442 pages, respectively) edited by Y. Ben-Dov and C.J. Hodgson covers a full spectrum of knowledge about this insect family, and most importantly, methods for its management. A distinguished squadron of international authors contributed to this comprehensive and informative effort. The broad coverage is envisioned to be a useful resource to all entities dealing with soft-scale insect pests and their man- agement, especially vol. 7b which encompasses natural enemies and control issues, though the full set provides an unparalleled landmark resource. The event brought together researchers and representatives from industry and non-governmental organizations to discuss and assess the application and challenges of biocontrol agents, microbial pesticides, and genetically engineered crops. The 304-page softbound work, edited by J. Richter, et al, considers and weighs numerous factors and presents case studies. INSECT VIRUSES A new, three-part study presents an in-depth overview of INSECT VIRUSES AND PEST MANAGEMENT. Part one of the 620-page, hardbound work explores the use and rationale of insect pathogenic viruses, which is followed by a segment devoted to a global survey of current practices and technical studies. The text covers environmental and external factors impacting viruses. In the 1998 volume's last section, authors F.R. Hunter-Fujita, et al, discuss and show via extensive illustrations practical protocols and detailed technical procedures for working with viruses. FMI: J. Softbound, 1158 pages. The well-established and widely accorded reference, THE PESTICIDE MANUAL A World Compendium, published by BCPC, is now available in CD format. The Council is offering a fully functional, time-limited trial disk to introduce features such as hypertext, web links, and other searching facilities. Additionally, BCPC invites interested parties to download a demonstration version of the Manual from the website: www.bcpc.org/cdrom FMI: BCPC Publications Sales, Bear Farm, Binfield, Bracknell, Berks. Editors R.J. Marks and B.B. Brodie have marshalled a contingent of contributed chapters into a coherent, 424-page work, POTATO CYST NEMATODES: BIOLOGY, DISTRIBUTION AND CONTROL, that offers a synthesis of current practical knowledge and related global research for a serious pest. With five sections, 19 chapters, and a series of full color photos, this 1998 hardbound title comprises a definitive examination of Globodera sp. Overcoming a daunting challenge, CABI researchers, editors, and programmers have organized and prepared a massive knowledgebase as a CD-ROM that surely ranks among the most comprehensive global sources of crop protection data currently available. The first module of the CROP PROTECTION COMPENDIUM, while emphasizing Southeast Asia and the Pacific, provides quick access to detailed, illustrated data for major insect and weed pests associated with 150 important world crops, plus natural enemies, regional distributions maps, and extensive data, all in color. The cleverly designed system incorporates a linking system that allows users to switch between a raft of informative screens and resources. A free, fully interactive demonstration Windows version of Module 1 is available. Work is well along on Module 2 containing additional information. A "compendium tour" can be downloaded from: pest.cabweb.org/cpc/cpchp.htm. FUNGICIDES IN CROP PROTECTION provides a concise, 232-page review of this group of pesticides and their use in cropping systems. The softbound, 1998 text, by H.G. Hewitt, covers performance, resistance, markets, legislation, perspectives of both crop producers and crop consumers, and concludes with a summary of trends in fungicide usage.
