IPMnet NEWS August 1999, Issue no. 68 ISSN: 1523-7893 Š Copyright 2005 IPM NEWS --- international IPM news and programs I. IPM NEWS / APPLICATIONS international IPM news and programs Monarchs, Milkweed, and Misconceptions Fallout following a recent report of 40 percent mortality from a limited, laboratory study in which monarch butterfly larvae were fed milkweed (Asclepias sp.) leaves hand "dusted" with corn/ maize pollen containing Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) triggered responses from an array of scientists and several publications, characterized by the opinion that "the impact on monarch butterflies is overblown." Writing in the July 1999 issue of ISB NEWS REPORT, R. Irwin found that while an attempt was made in the trial to visually match laboratory leaves with the same density of Bt-containing pollen as on leaves collected in the field, the amount of pollen actually found on milkweed plants adjacent to or several meters from corn fields varied and was likely to be much less. Moreover, lepidopteran susceptibility to Bt is, notes Irwin, a long known fact, and not a recent discovery. Monarch watchers also noted that since these lepidopterans tend to fly in open areas and to lay their eggs on smaller milkweed plants along fencerows, in ditches, and in pastures, there is low probability that they would select milkweeds in the middle of a corn field with plants tall and mature enough to disperse pollen. In practice, farmers raising corn generally control (or eradicate) most milkweed plants growing within their field boundaries. A front page article in the 15 June edition of GENETIC ENGINEERING NEWS quoted several authorities, including D. Pimentel (Cornell Univ., where the study was conducted) and others, who pointed out a potential for an unwelcome return to heavier usage of "harder" pesticides if Bt-modified corn was banned. On a different track, future development of corn varieties that target Bt gene expression to the corn plant's stalk could eliminate risks associated with Bt protein in pollen. While the results of the extensively publicized study were labeled "intrinsically credible," several factors, including Bt-corn currently accounting for approximately just 20 percent of the crop (in the USA), the increasing trend to establish non-Bt refugia next to fields, and the nature of monarch behavior, together appear to ameliorate any dire threat of severely impacting the "Bambi of the insect world." New Biofungicide Available A German firm recently announced Contans WG, a new biofungicide for control of sclerotinia rot caused by the fungi Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and Sclerotinia minor, among the most destructive diseases affecting over 380 ornamentals, field crops, vegetables, and herbs. The product is said to have specific antagonistic action against the survival structures (sclerotia) of the plant pathogens S. sclerotiorum and S. minor. This biological fungicide contains 1 x 10E9 active spores per gram of the soil fungus Coniothyrium minitans. The spores of C. minitans germinate in the moist soil. Once applied and incorporated into the soil, the mycelia of C. minitans attack, and destroy within two to three months, the pathogen's black sclerotial bodies in the soil. PLANT DISEASES: AGROECOLOGICAL APPROACH Costa Rican plant pathologist L.F. Arauz has prepared a liberally illustrated treatise including color photos that delves into extensive detail on numerous aspects of identifying and combatting plant diseases. The 467 pages of FITOPATOLOGIA, UN ENFOQUE AGROECOLOGICO, provide an overview of descriptions, diagnosis, and management methods covering diseases, nematodes, and other disease vectors. Published in 1998, the attractively produced softbound work (in Spanish) offers both analytical and practical perspectives, all within an agroecological framework. (Asparagus officinalis) to watermelon (Citrullus lanatus). The softbound, 1999 volume first addresses general aspects of IPM, plus disease, insect, weed, and vertebrate pest management, then lays out crop specific recommendations for various pest management alternatives, accompanied by important cultural information. Editors S. Reiners and a team of experts have produced a clearly designed 305-page compilation that offers a single, up-to-date data source; regardless that it is targeted at the state of New York, the very reasonably priced volume provides a universally handy and thorough reference. The softbound work stands as a comprehensive interdisciplinary compendium covering a wide range of management strategies and issues that can aid critical decision-making for all involved with citrus growing, protection, storage-handling, and shipping. Special emphasis has been given to IPM practices. Editors L.W. Timmer and L.W. Editor D.D. Buhler has drawn on the foresight and analysis of an international cadre of contributing weed scientist/authors to examine the future thrust and challenges of one of agriculture's oldest problems. The 289-page, softbound work presents innovative approaches, as well as review chapters, with the overall goal of stimulating discussion on a broader, more enlightened view of weeds and their effective management within an ecological framework. Editor-in-chief T.R. Roberts introduces the overall work as being "designed to provide easy access to information on the degradation and metabolism of all major classes of agrochemical in commercial use." The hardbound PART 1, HERBICIDES AND PLANT GROWTH REGULATORS contains 869 pages and systematically analyzes products in 31 herbicide classes, plus more than a dozen growth regulators.
