IPM NEWS / APPLICATIONS international IPM news and programs Report: Pesticides Will Remain Important in U.S. A committee chartered by the prestigious U.S. National Academies' National Research Council (NRC) concluded in a newly released report that chemical pesticides will continue to play a significant role in U.S. agriculture for at least the next decade, but also called for increased research, development, and deployment of alternatives. The NRC's Committee on the Future Role of Pesticides in U.S. Agriculture found no justification for completely abandoning chemical pesticides, not only because the environmental compatibility of pesticides is improving, but also because effective and affordable alternatives are not yet widely available. "No single pest management strategy will work in all ecosystems," noted entomologist M.R. Berenbaum, the Committee's chairperson, "so chemicals need to be part of an ecologically-based framework that can safely increase crop yields." The 258-page report, THE FUTURE ROLE OF PESTICIDES IN U.S. AGRICULTURE, offers a wide-ranging sequence of pragmatic recommendations advocating increased investment by both public and private sectors aimed at creating and "maintaining a diversity of tools for maximizing flexibility, precision, and stability of pest management." The Committee identified a series of promising opportunities for increasing benefits of, and reducing risks posed by, pesticide use, such as: promoting scientific and social initiatives to increase the competitiveness of pesticide alternatives; paying increased attention to so-called "minor" crops; and, providing incentives to develop and implement alternative pest management strategies. Threat of Vast Blast May be Past A management strategy jointly explored by scientists from the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and Yunnan Agricultural Univ. (China) successfully and rapidly controls blast, a traditionally devastating fungal rice disease. The relatively simple strategy, as outlined in the colorful IRRI ANNUAL REPORT 1999-2000, involves interplanting
different varieties of rice side-by-side in the same field. Field results revealed both a significantly lowered incidence of blast, plus increased crop yields. "The key," observed T. Mew, head of IRRI's Entomology and Plant Pathology Div., and an architect of the strategy, "is to use different varieties, with different resistance genes. Never plant the same varieties every season. Rotate them. Achieve an equilibrium," he explained. The process has an additional important benefit: substantially reduced fungicide usage. The Weedbuster Week poster won the "Communicating Weed Science" award, and the 700 attendees (representing 70 countries) at the Congress took away 250 copies of the poster in a handout version as well as badges, stickers, posters, and fridge magnets. Walton commented that, "Weedbuster Week got great coverage, generated a lot of interest, and hopefully this is one of the early steps in Weedbuster Week becoming international." > C. WEEDSHOW 2000 is designed to raise the profile of environmental weeds, and the individuals linked with their management, through a combination of workshops and panels of experts along with an opportunity for numerous involved agencies, industries, and community
groups to share achievements, display products, and disseminate information. According to the organizers, WEEDSHOW 2000 is timely because: 1). Weeds "remain one of the greatest threats to the extent and quality of the Australian environment;" 2). Weed management strategies across all levels of government and the community have dramatically evolved during the past decade; and, 3). Two New Titles from APS Press In 1999, North Carolina State Univ. (USA) hosted a 2.5-day conference designed to: stimulate development of new concepts and approaches for implementation and integration of emerging technologies in IPM; provide a forum for interdisciplinary education and the sharing of perspectives among disciplinary specialists that will be necessary to sustain the success of IPM; and to, identify constraints, problems, and needs with respect to the development, implementation, and adoption of emerging technologies in IPM. Proceedings of the event, which attracted attendees from 14 countries, have been published in 2000 as EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES FOR INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT: CONCEPTS, RESEARCH, AND IMPLEMENTATION, by the American Phytopathological Society (APS), edited by an interdisciplinary team of G.C. Kennedy and T.B. Sutton. OTHER RESOURCES FRUIT FLIES - TWO NEW INFORMATION SOURCES THE PACIFIC The latest phase of a multi-national sponsored project, "Regional Management of Fruit Flies in the Pacific," (RMFFP) began in 1997, embraces 22 Pacific Island countries and territories, and recently published a new, 145-page website, PACIFIC FRUIT FLY WEB www.pacifly.org. The informative website illustrates and describes the 24 economic fruit fly species occurring in the Pacific Islands region (distribution, biology, host fruits, economic importance, monitoring, and recommended control methods). Discussion covers fruit fly status in each country, including information on all species present, achievements in fruit fly research and management, and current status of quarantine surveillance. The site also lists and illustrates fruit fly control methods and provides access to nearly a dozen earlier advisory leaflets. > L. PLANT DISEASE COMPENDIUM ONLINE Extension scientists at Oregon State Univ. (USA) have developed a comprehensive plant/crop disease information resource written in clear, understandable text and featuring tons of color photos. The latest ONLINE GUIDE TO PLANT DISEASE CONTROL (plant-disease.orst.edu) allows readers to select a plant, or a disease, click on a menu, and let the site's extensive database deliver the desired data. For example, clicking on "wheat" brings up a list of 28 diseases, each of which can then be accessed for details and specific management recommendations. Other interesting material is included such as a discourse on nematodes, improving spray efficiency, and a description of fungicide families. While the site is aimed at the Northwestern section of the USA, a large share of the information contained could well be useful in many other regions. The site was authored by pathologists J.W. Certain key weeds are described in depth. For each weed, there follows a brief analysis (in a reader-friendly format) of the specific biocontrol agents, the year first released, the status and degree of control, and the type of damage.
