IPMnet NEWS November 2000, Issue no. 83 ISSN: 1523-7893 Š Copyright 2005 IPM NEWS --- international IPM news and programs I. IPM NEWS / APPLICATIONS international IPM news and programs IPMForum Meets to Plan Future IPMForum, an international group of organizations mutually concerned with global advancement of IPM, convened its most recent meeting on 21 October 2000 in Washington, DC, USA, with an agenda that featured presentations to bring members up to date on activities, followed by a discussion of proposed plans for future activities. The session was attended by representatives from a variety of organizations including the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research, CABI, IPMEurope, and the Consortium for International Crop Protection, as well as observers from other closely involved entities. Attendees concluded that current activities, in addition to periodic meetings to exchange information, would continue to center on conducting workshops, involving non-governmental organizations in IPM activities, and providing information via newsletters. Further programy planning is contingent on funding arrangements. It was agreed that CABI, through its Bioscience Division, will again take the lead in organizing the next IPMForum meeting and other activities as appropriate during the coming year. *> A. Little, CABI Bioscience, Silwood Park, Ascot, Berks SL5 7PY, UK. A.Little@cabi.org. GLOBAL IPM NOTES The U.S. state of California reports that its intensive agricultural sector decreased pesticide usage by more than 5.3 mil. kg (11.7 mil. lbs) from 1998 to 1999, the first such decline in three years. *> K. Brunetti Brunetti@empm.cdpr.ca.gov. A strain of a microbial insecticide, originally isolated in 1986, for controlling the greenhouse whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum), has moved closer to registration in Europe according to the EWSN NEWSLETTER. The naturally occurring fungus is Paecilomyces fumosoroseus strain Apopka 97 (PFR 97), marketed as "PreFeRal." *> G. Sterk, info@biobest.be. Studies of Centaurea diffusa (diffuse knapweed), a highly noxious invasive weed in North America, reveal that differences in its root exudates and how these exudates affect competition for resources with native species may help to explain why some invading species successfully overpower existing plant communities. *> R.M. Callaway Callaway@selway.umt.edu.
Treating foliage with a hydrophilic formulation of inert silicate kaolin reduced feeding of adult Diaprepes abbreviatus (root weevil, a pest of citrus and ornamental plants in the tropics) 68-84 percent compared with untreated foliage. *> S.L. Lapointe, SLapointe@ushrl.ars.usda.gov. SPECIAL NOTE Eight Years and Counting In the olden days of radio, program announcers often intoned, "And now a word from our sponsor." Thus, for IPMnet, headed into its eighth year of continuous global IPM information dissemination, it's appropriate to briefly interrupt the flow of articles to salute and gratefully acknowledge IPMnet's sponsors, the Consortium for International Crop Protection, and Oregon State University's Integrated Plant Protection Center, whose leaders conceived IPMnet and took what was in 1993 a bold step by committing resources to an all-electronic, free IPM information program. The result of their foresight and conviction in the importance of providing IPM information worldwide was: creation of the unique and expanding DATABASE OF IPM RESOURCES on the web; support for RADCLIFFE'S IPM WORLD TEXTBOOK on the web (now in a Spanish version) as an unmatched source of IPM information; and 83 issues of IPMnet NEWS provided every month to subscribers in 117 nations (plus a web version) and seen by you and 4,000 others interested in various aspects of IPM and crop protection. The Consortium, the Center, and IPMnet look forward to another eight years of working to achieve evermore environmentally responsive and rational pest management. back to top IPM MEDLEY --- publications and other IPM information resources II. IPM MEDLEY general matters, publications of interest, and other resources for IPM information CIRAD Emphasizes Crop Protection France's state-owned CIRAD (International Agronomic Research and Development Center) recently published it's annual report, CIRAD 1999 (in both French and English versions, including "The CIRAD CD-ROM"), that reflects attention to crop protection efforts across the organization's various crop-focused departments. To more effectively limit the impact of weeds, currently estimated to cause 25 percent of all crop losses and account for 30-50 percent of farmers' time, CIRAD worked with the Crop Protection Service of Reunion to produce AdvenRun comprising a reference manual and a CD-Rom. The package provides assistance with weed identification and suggests effective weed management strategies. According to CIRAD specialists, the low yields of irrigated tomatoes in the Senegal River basin are primarily attributable to insect pests and pathogens. In collaboration with Senegalese national entities, a "pest and disease" monitoring unit was created and has taken steps to make all crop-involved stakeholders "aware of the risks posed by pests and diseases and the need for integrated control." CIRAD was established in 1984, has approximately 1800 employees scattered all across the globe collaborating with 90 nations, emphasizes the tropics and subtropics, and exists to contribute to economic development through a combination of research, training, and technical information dissemination. *> Head, Crop Protection Program, CIRAD, BP 5035, 34032 Montpellier Cedex 1, FRANCE. New Titles from APS Press The American Phytopathological Society (APS) has published ILLUSTRATED DICTIONARY OF MYCOLOGY based on the 1991, Spanish version, but vastly expanded with nearly twice as many terms and roughly 80 percent more (1,322) impressive black and white illustrations, many by the senior author. M. Ulloa and R.T. Hanlin have produced a 448-page, liberally illustrated, unique hardbound reference that sets forth and helps to standardize the technical and scientific lexicon of mycology. The latest revised volume in the notable APS series of disease compendia, COMPENDIUM OF SORGHUM DISEASES 2nd edition, includes major revisions to the virus and bacterial disease sections, plus updated smut fungi names and information. Editors R.A. Frederiksen and G.N. Odvody orchestrated input from 35 international experts and have produced a 129-page volume incorporating 122 full color photos, plus numerous black and white photos and line drawings. Sections of the softbound work cover biotic diseases, abiotic diseases, beneficial microorganisms, insect pests, and procedures for controlling sorghum diseases. Among new elements of this second edition, a landmark resource on sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench), is expanded coverage of ergot and diseases caused by Fusarium sp. Volume 5 in the PLANT-MICROBE INTERACTIONS series continues the exploration of interesting microbial plant pathogens and symbionts and the responses they elicit on their plant hosts. Editors G. Stacey and N.T. Keen have melded the efforts of 34 international author/specialists with the overall goal of chronicling future plant-microbe interaction research. The 2000, hardbound work's 336 pages present nine chapters ranging from overviews to a treatise on specific techniques and approaches. *> APS Press, 3340 Pilot Knob Rd., St. Paul, MN 55121-2097, USA. The initial title is CHEMICAL PESTICIDE MARKETS, HEALTH RISKS AND RESIDUES, a review by J. Harris, with examples of risks to human welfare in terms of both occupational exposure and residues in food. The softbound, 2000 publication's 64 pages, in addition to emphasis on developing regions, also provides information about developed countries. The series' second title, the 80-page PRIORITIES IN BIOPESTICIDE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES, was prepared by J. Harris and D. Dent (CABI Bioscience biopesticide programme leader) and presents the findings from a survey of more than 100 biopesticide researchers in developing nations. Key results indicated a lack of expertise in the crucial later stages of development and chronic underfunding of programs, pointing to a need for targeted assistance. *> CABI Publishing, CAB International, Wallingford, Oxon OX10 8DE, UK. Featured Paper Polyculture Pest Suppression Questioned Two U.S. entomologists challenge the perception that crop diversity in itself reduces (insect) pest damage. In "Intercropping and Pest Management: A Review of Major Concepts," H.A. Smith and R. McSorley contend that "pest management clearly can be enhanced under certain conditions by polyculture," but add the caveat that "those conditions still remain to be worked out for many specific situations." Most existing data comparing arthropod behavior and reactions in polyculture versus monoculture, the authors note, stem from controlled experiments. While the results from lab and experiment station-based tests are revealing, they cannot necessarily be equated with actual farming experience. The article, liberally illustrated with color photos, concludes that, "Only by testing the results of laboratory and experiment station research under working farm conditions will it be possible to develop a practical theory of pest suppression through polyculture." *> Excerpted, with thanks, from: AMER.
