IPM NEWS / APPLICATIONS international IPM news and programs Pest Information Group Formed A group of European scientists has formed the International Society for Pest Information (ISPI) to promote information exchange that contributes to the development of pest management methods which "are effective and safe for humans and the environment." The non-profit Society's aims are directed towards common benefits and goals and its nature is altruistic with no commercial interest, according to its published Articles of Organization. Membership is open to all who agree to the indicated provisions. ISPI, launched in January 2001, has started to assemble and maintain databases for pest lists, beneficial organisms, literature, and contact information for relevant organizations and individuals. GLOBAL IPM NOTES Rice farmers in the Philippines now record the lowest levels of insecticide use of any rice growers in Asia, while achieving some of the highest yields per hectare in Southeast Asia. *> International Rice Research Institute press release, IRRI@cgiar.org. Modified atmosphere treatments, such as lethal exposure to CO2 and N2, were found to have strong potential as a disinfestation technique for arthropod pests in greenhouses. *> D.A. PUNGENT PEPPER PUBLICATION PLEASES If there is anything about Capsicum spp. (peppers) that isn't discussed in NORTHEAST PEPPER INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT (IPM) MANUAL, it's probably not worth noting. The 145-page, 2001 work warms up with discussions of nomenclature, descriptions, and even pungency ratings, all accompanied by lush, full-color photos (there are over 200). Then come the meaty chapters ranging from general IPM strategies to highly specific sections on insects, weeds, diseases, with a nod toward vertebrate pests, all couched in a rational pest management approach. A separate "Pesticide Supplement" presents ratings and product information. Editors T.J. Boucher and R.A. A PAIR FROM APS PRESS ** A new hardbound work, FUSARIUM: Paul E. Nelson Memorial Symposium, comprises revised versions of papers presented by a contingent of international authorities at the 1997 event organized to commemorate Prof. Nelson, supplemented by contributions specifically prepared for this 2001 volume. Editors B.A. Summerell, et al, grouped the text into sections covering taxonomy, genetics, ecology, pathology, and mycotoxicology. The 408-page volume includes numerous illustrations and is designed to complement an earlier definitive work by Nelson. ** A multi-author work published in 2001, STEM RUST OF WHEAT: From Ancient Enemy to Modern Foe, offers historical insight into important research on Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici in the 20th century. Editor P.D. Peterson, and a handful of colleagues, have infused this 168-page, hardbound overview with intriguing background, introduced with a foreword by Nobel Laureate N. Borlaug. A TRIO FROM KLUWER ** As titled, the massive hardbound FIELD MANUAL OF TECHNIQUES IN INVERTEBRATE PATHOLOGY, Application and Evaluation of Pathogens for Control of Insects and Other Invertebrate Pests, is designed to provide background and instruction on a wide range of techniques and their use in field evaluation of entomopathogens. Editors L.A. Lacey and H.K.Kaya have assembled an acclaimed international contingent of
contributors to produce this extensive monograph. The 932-page, year 2000 work is organized in 10 sections and 38 chapters covering the essentials from basic tools to sophisticated procedures. Three chapters discuss evaluation of Bt transgenic plants. ** ADVANCES IN RICE BLAST RESEARCH, the Proceedings of the 2nd International Rice Blast Conference convened in 1998, provides an overview of research on the rice-blast pathosystem. The hardbound monograph was edited by D. Tharreau, et al, to incorporate 39 papers addressing all aspects of rice blast fungus, genetics, and molecular biology. In his introduction, co-editor J.L. Notteghem observes that despite all the advances in breeding for resistance, "only simple strategies for resistance durable enough to be manageable will have an impact" at the farm level. The year 2000 publication has 376 pages and is volume 15 in the "Developments in Plant Pathology" series. ** In his introduction to FUNGAL PATHOLOGY, editor J.W. Kronstad describes the year 2000 monograph as "presenting an overview of the current areas of activity and common themes that pervade research on these important organisms." Taken together, the 12 included chapters contributed by international scientists in this hardbound work provide an extensive update on recent progress for many plant pathogenic fungi responsible for significant economic problems. PUBLICATION NOTES IMPACT OF AN RR CROP IN DENMARK Researchers in the Danish Ministry of Environment and Energy's National Environmental Research Institute (NERI) recently published FLORA AND FAUNA IN ROUNDUP TOLERANT FODDER BEET FIELDS, a 40 page study that found, in this instance, use of transgenic crops increased biodiversity compared to traditional herbicide treatments. The report, by N. Elmegaard and M.B. Pedersen, noted both arthropod and floral differences including increased predator populations apparently attracted by greater prey density. The authors suggest that delayed application of glyphosate led to emergence of a wider weed species range and consequently more host material for phytophagous insects. ONLINE LIBRARY INITIATIVE More than 20,000 individuals in 157 countries have signed an open letter supporting "the establishment of an online public library that would provide the full contents of the published record of research and scholarly discourse in medicine and the life sciences in a freely accessible, fully searchable, interlinked form." Signees contend that the "permanent, archival record of scientific research and ideas should neither be owned nor controlled by publishers, but should belong to the public" while recognizing scientific journal publishers' right to a "fair financial return." EQUIPMENT, MATERIALS, & SERVICES DEVICE IMPROVES FUMIGATION A need to investigate alternative methods and products for soil fumigation of crops after the phase out of methyl bromide has led to development of new field equipment. For more efficient and safer injection of telone, an existing fumigating gas, a combination of a 76 cm (30 in.) rolling coulter, knives, and delivery tubes place the gas 30.5 cm (12 in.) below soil surface while effectively negotiating field residue. Incorporated sealing devices immediately backfill some soil in the trench to slow or eliminate fumigant escape. Trailing press wheels then close the soil over the trench and seal in the gas. NEW TRAP SNARES FRUIT FLIES A newly designed, patented device couples chemical and visual stimuli to attract, trap, and if desired dispatch Ceratitis capitata (Mediterranean fruit fly). Shaped to mimic the three dimensions of host fruit, the trap incorporates both clear and yellow sections to take advantage of the flies' instinct to fly toward light. The chemical stimulus is based on a trio of compounds ammonia, putrescine, and trimethylamine in ratios that can be varied for different purposes. Featured Paper Threshold-based Programs Produce Benefits New approaches to insect pest management for cotton grown in West African nations can reduce pesticide use and environmental impacts while improving economic returns, according to research reported by CIRAD (Centre de Cooperation Internationale en Recherche Agronomique pour le Developpement) scientists P. Silvie, et al, in CROP PROTECTION. Based on sampling, insect identification, and establishment of thresholds, pesticide use was cut by 40-50 percent. Specific procedures varied by country, but generally avoided calendar-based application of current pesticide levels.
