IPM NEWS / APPLICATIONS international IPM news and programs Entomopathogens: Now and in the Future As development and application of biocontrol for managing crop pests continue to accelerate, complexities and controversies have become front page news. Two recent scientific overviews on the topic provide concise examinations and assess future potentials of one aspect, using entomopathogens to control pest insects. Writing in the journal BIOLOGICAL CONTROL, L.A. Lacey et al pose the key question in, "Insect Pathogens as Biological Control Agents: Do They Have a Future?" Entomopathogens, the authors note, should not be compared to pesticides solely on either an efficacy or cost basis. Use of biocontrols offer additional advantages in terms of safety for humans and other nontarget organisms, reduction of pesticide residues in food, preservation of other natural enemies, and increased biodiversity in managed ecosystems. Greater appreciation for the attributes of entomopathogens in the future is envisioned as well as synergistic combinations with other technologies. However, Lacey and colleagues set forth seven keys necessary to realize expanded biocontrol usage: improved performance under challenging environmental conditions (cool weather, dry conditions, etc.); increased virulence and speed of kill; improved formulations for ease of application, increased environmental persistence, and longer shelf life; greater production efficiency; understanding of how pathogens fit into integrated systems and their interaction with the environment and other IPM components; greater appreciation of their environmental advantages; and, increased acceptance by growers and the general public. The most widely used microbial control agent is the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis which, in various forms that are active against Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, and Diptera, is an integral component of widely grown "Bt crops." In his IPM REVIEWS paper, "Bt Transgenic Crops: Risks and Benefits," R.J.C. Cannon observes that the popularity of Bt crops is not without complications and, for consumers, concerns. Bt crops, while reducing usage of primary insecticides, have in some cases triggered upsurges of non-target secondary pest insects that then may require pesticide applications. In years where a Bt-targeted pest remains below pest-level thresholds, the added cost of the Bt enhanced seed may be an unneeded expenditure for growers. Cannon also raises the topic of resistance and the need for establishing refuges. Beyond the need
for closely monitoring resistance development, "a widespread consensus on the necessity for such measures, and an appreciation of the importance of multi-tactical approaches, has developed," he notes. The two papers are part of a growing, thoughtful body of literature exploring the evolution of entomopathogen usage. *> L.A. Lacey, USDA/ARS/YARL, 5230 Konnowac Pass Rd., Wapato, WA 98951, USA. Canadians Set Up Biocontrol Group A newly established research network aims to reduce pesticide use in agriculture and forestry in Canada by replacing pesticides with biocontrols based on using natural enemies of insect pests and disease pathogens. The Biocontrol Network will initially focus on greenhouses and tree nurseries, two fast growing industries, notes network co-leader/founder, J-L. Schwartz. Headquartered at the Universite de Montreal, the new research network will be supported by a grant from the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council, a Canadian government granting agency, and will involve 42 scientists from 15 universities and 7 government research agencies in 7 provinces. Dr. Schwartz, along with co-leader R. Laprade, specializes inBacillus thuringiensisresearch. The network is expecting to train 80 students and postdoctoral fellows in a multi-disciplinary environment during the next five years. Also, the network is said to "have established strong links with Canadian growers, pest control product manufacturers, and other stake-holders, including regulatory agencies, plus environmental protection and consumer groups." *> J-L. Gaudet, GaudetD@em.agr.ca. back to top IPM MEDLEY --- publications and other IPM information resources II. IPM MEDLEY general matters, publications of interest, and other resources for IPM information Notes on Cotton IPM in Turkmenistan [G.A. Matthews, director of the International Pesticide Application Research Centre (IPARC) at Imperial College, UK, recently visited, and offers this glimpse of cotton IPM in, Turkmenistan. (Text condensed due to space limitations).
IPMnet NEWS is indebted to Dr. Matthews for generously providing this material at IPMnet's invitation.] Since independence, Turkmenistan, located east of the Caspian Sea and with a predominantly arid environment, has increased the area in wheat production, reduced that in alfalfa, and continued to grow cotton both Hirsutum and Barbadense as its main crop. Additionally, many horticultural crops are grown and some heated glasshouses provide vegetables in winter. Extremely hot summers and cold winters cause there to be relatively few insect pests. Helicoverpa armigera is a major pest in some areas, but as in neighboring Uzbekistan, emphasis has been on biological control, with release of Trichogramma and Habrobracon parasitoids reared in bio-laboratories, especially in areas near the Uzbek border. H. armigera populations are very low compared with other cotton growing countries, possibly due to winter plowing reducing survival between seasons. In the absence of extensive insecticide use, many other entomophages coccinellids, lacewings, and Orius spp. can be found in the fields. Whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) was a major pest 8-10 years ago, thought to be primarily due to its survival in glasshouses. Tomato and cucumber production in heated glasshouses is now delayed until October, after the first frosts have decreased field populations. To reduce any migration of whiteflies to cotton in June, glasshouse crops are sprayed, at present with imadacloprid, before the crops are uprooted. Nevertheless by June, crops outside glasshouses can support a whitefly population, albeit controlled to some extent biologically. A smooth leaf variety of cotton is grown as it has some tolerance to whitefly infestations. Cutworms, thrips, and aphids are also early season pests, but with the IPM program, pest infestations are extremely low. Pesticide use is almost entirely confined to a seed treatment with bronopol to protect seedlings from soil pathogens, especially as initial growth is slowed by low night temperatures in May. Mechanical cultivation has been the major method of weed control, but generally fails to remove many weeds within rows. Cotton would no doubt benefit from a band of herbicide applied at sowing, but at present herbicide use is limited to some of the wheat crops. Scientists at the Cotton Research Institutes in Turkmenistan would welcome receiving information, reprints, and contacts from other countries. Carpinera has compiled a near-encyclopedic reference covering pest insects and other invertebrates that attack vegetable crops in N. America. The large format, hardbound volume, entitled HANDBOOK OF
VEGETABLE PESTS, incorporates reviews from over a century of entomological literature, and yields an in-depth, comprehensive profile of the nation's veggie loving insect pests. The main body of the text, supplemented by 270 full color photos and dozens of black/white drawings, presents extensive descriptions by class, order, and family; another shorter section of the 740-page work offers a guide to pests by the vegetable crops they attack. Among the major insect orders, the primary villains are Coleoptera and Lepidoptera. The 2001 volume contains a huge reference list. *> Academic Press, 525 B St., Suite 1900, San Diego, CA 92101-4495, USA. E-mail: KKuehner@acad.com. Phone: 1-619-231-0926. Website: www.academicpress.com. VEGETABLE DISEASES ATLASES Brimming with lush, full-color photos throughout, a pair of older publications provide benchmarks for thorough, clear, and logical reviews of all aspects of pathogens in tomato and cucurbit crops. Originally published in French, then English in 1994 by Manson Publishing, UK, then reprinted and published by others, and now in mid-2001 available from Iowa State Univ. Press (USA), the two works of Institut National de Recherche Agronomique plant pathologist D. Blancard and colleagues are: A COLOUR ATLAS OF TOMATO DISEASES - OBSERVATION, IDENTIFICATION AND CONTROL, 212 pages, over 300 color photos; and, A COLOUR ATLAS OF CUCURBIT DISEASES - OBSERVATION, IDENTIFICATION AND CONTROL, 299 pages, 472 color photos. Both hardbound volumes are printed on high quality paper and employ color-coded sections to expeditiously present material to aid in diagnosing and treating diseases. Illustrations and text examine in detail pathogen-caused abnormalities in leaves, stems, roots, and fruit. Each large format book covers causative factors and diagnostic guidelines for key pathogens. *> ISU Press, 2121 S. State Ave., Ames, IA 50014-8300, USA. E-mail: Woo@isupress.com. Fax: 1-515-292-3348.
