IPM NEWS / APPLICATIONS international IPM news and programs Parasitic Plant Scientists Organize Some of the world's smallest seeds belong to parasitic plants that are notorious for the immense problems they cause agriculture in less developed zones. L.J. Musselman, a noted international parasitic plant authority, cites two of the worst offenders, the root parasitic genera Striga and Orobanche; the former is estimated to infest and diminish 73 million ha (180 million a.) of cereal and legume production in sub-Saharan Africa, and the latter attacks crop plants throughout the Mediterranean, the Middle East, and beyond. For many years a dedicated, loosely informal core of scientists has focused on control management of parasitic weeds. Now, in light of parasitic weeds' increasing global importance, that group has taken a further step and this year organized into the International Parasitic Plant Society (IPPS). The Society will promote the study and understanding of parasitic plants, with an ultimate goal of defining more effective means of limiting their devastating impact. IPPS is specifically created to exchange, disseminate, and publish information about parasitic plants. The Society also sponsored the recent 7th International Parasitic Weed Symposium, held in France, and has assumed support for the long-running newsletter HAUSTORIUM which offers both electronic and hard-copy versions. Aid for Treating Disease in Lentil Two Canadian scientists have developed a set of guidelines for identifying situations where fungicide application in Lens culinaris Medic. (lentil) is most cost-effective. Growers can use these guidelines by comparing field values against tables that have been devised using predetermined numbers based on a series of risk factors: plant stand, moisture conditions, future predicted weather, and disease development stage. The result is a cumulative total risk figure which, when matched against a threshold value, suggests whether or not applying a fungicide will be monetarily worthwhile. ALL ABOUT LACEWINGS The first volume in 17 years to seriously examine both the biology and role in crop protection of the Chrysopidae, LACEWINGS IN THE CROP ENVIRONMENT, assembles a mass of information hitherto scattered in the primary literature. A section explains how to identify toxic plants; another lists plant taxa by their principal adverse effects. IMMENSE NEW ENTOMOLOGY REFERENCE A fully cross-referenced collection of 28,000 terms, names, and phrases used in entomology, incorporating an estimated 43,000 definitions, has been amassed by G. Gordh and D.H. Headrick and published in 2001 as A DICTIONARY OF ENTOMOLOGY. Listings cover insect anatomy, behavior, biology, ecology, histology, molecular biology, morphology, pest management, taxonomy, and systematics, and, of course, full nomenclature and classification. The 1056-page tome provides the origin, etymology, part of speech, and definition of each included term or phrase. Where meanings have changed, or terms have been borrowed from other disciplines, the impressive hardbound volume indicates the most current usage. MANAGING WEEDS IN THE TROPICS Burgeoning weeds in the world's humid and sub-humid tropic zones frequently constrain crop production, thwart pasture establishment, and impede water-body maintenance. A 2001 work, WEED MANAGEMENT IN THE HUMID AND SUB-HUMID TROPICS, addresses these problems through review of weed biology and discussion of effective management techniques. Long-time weed scientist P.J. van Rijn, and two guest authors, first consider principles of weed ecology, then individually examine weed management specifics for each of nearly 30 main crops grown in the tropics. PUBLICATION & CD NOTES PROGRAM SUMMARIZES RESEARCH RESULTS An updated version of Agricultural Research Manager (ARM), ARM 6.1.8., a software program for establishing, managing, and summarizing herbicide, insecticide, fungicide, nematicide, and other non-chemical research trials, has been released. The full program, offered on CD-ROM, uses 32-bit technology and runs on Windows-based computers, and is said not to require extensive computer experience to operate. ARM is most beneficial when used for field and
green/glasshouse research, and is designed to manage and summarize for a single-trial basis. An add-on program for summarizing across multiple trials is also available as is a data collector program. The well laid out website includes over 2,500 insects and allied organisms, with approximately 50 percent of species illustrated, plus distribution maps for 85 percent of the species. Last revised in 1993, AICN has now been updated and expanded to reflect taxonomic changes, new names, and newly recorded species. U.S. REGIONAL PM CENTERS news, developments The U.S. Dept. of Agriculture has established a network of four federally funded Regional Pest Management Centers (PMCs) to be "the focal point for team building efforts, communication networks, and stakeholder participation" in each region. The concept is based on the importance of strengthening links between production agriculture, research and extension programs, and others involved with agriculture. Each of the four new PMCs will focus on a Western, Northcentral, Northeastern, or Southern region. The PMCs lauch process began in late 2000. Several of the Centers promptly began operations (typically creating a website) whereas others, for various reasons, are still in earlier operative stages. While each PMC either has, or soon will have, an active information dissemination program,
IPMnet has been engaged to help support, amplify, and enhance the four individual efforts. Hence, this new section which will appear in IPMnet NEWS periodically. Beyon the four regional centers, there are numerous other IPM and pest management centers or programs in the U.S. organized at a university, or in conjunction with a specific state government, that have been operating for some time. Several are extremely active and well known, both nationally and internationally. These programs are anticipated to eventually, in various ways, link with the new regional PMCs. *> D.
