Author Rebecca Giggs explores how people feel toward animals in a time of ecological crisis and technological change. Her debut book, Fathoms: The World in the Whale, received the prestigious 2021 Andrew Carnegie Medal for excellence in nonfiction. Guests on this voyage will receive a complimentary copy of the book in advance of the voyage for an author-led onboard book club discussion.
As the director of the Alaska Whale Foundation, Andy Szabo studies the fascinating cultural behaviors of humpbacks in Southeast Alaska—and oversees critical research that’s helping to better understand and protect the health of this very special population. On this voyage, he’ll provide a history of the local pods and help guests identify whales using citizen science technology
