Discover a Rich Tapestry of Cultures Far from the glittering skylines of their modern cities, Asia and Oceania’s ancient traditions are celebrated amid timeless treasures like the tea houses of Japan, colorful Malaysian trading ports, and Bali’s emerald rice paddies. Journey to secluded villages and sacred landmarks where age-old customs hold strong, and learn about their importance from the people dedicated to preserving them for future generations.

Clockwise from far left: The Japanese tea ceremony is an art form that requires a specially designed room; a woman in a traditional kimono poses in Japan’s historic Ritsurin Garden; National Geographic Orion chef Mikael Sjoberg shops for ingredients at a local Indonesian market; cultural specialist Tua Pittman examines an intricate carving in New Zealand; Aboriginal guides interpret Wandjina art in the Kimberley, home to some of the world’s oldest cave art; the Buddhist temple on mount Tohamsan houses six South Korean national treasures.
7
Life on Board: At Home on the High Seas National Geographic Orion and National Geographic Resolution are destinations in their own right, featuring exceptional amenities and cultural experiences to ensure that your time on board is equally rewarding as your time on shore. Every aspect of your experience aboard our fleet is an opportunity to connect with and celebrate the places you explore.
8
Savor the Flavors of Your Destination
Sampling local cuisine is a highlight of any voyage, and we take great care to bring the flavors of your destinations to the meals you enjoy on board. Our executive chefs design unique and innovative menus that prominently feature sustainably sourced dishes from the regions you visit, as well as wine pairings and guided tastings to enhance your culinary experience. Special onshore excursions, like a visit to a tropical spice garden in Malaysia and a guided exploration of Balinese rice terraces, invite guests to forge even deeper connections with local culinary traditions.
Suite Exclusives
The suites aboard National Geographic Orion and National Geographic Resolution are your elegant retreat at sea, featuring spacious living areas and incredible ocean views. Now, booking one of these beautifully appointed accommodations comes with even more benefits. Our new Suite Exclusives package gives guests staying in eligible cabins access to an array of amenities designed to enhance your onboard experience, including priority booking for spa treatments, an in-room espresso maker, complimentary laundry, and other exclusive perks.

A full-time medical professional travels on board and is on call 24 hours a day.

Wildlife Above and Beneath the Waves The wild allure of Asia and Oceania extends beyond the region’s biodiverse jungles and beaches, into turquoise waters where denizens of the deep rule a fascinating marine realm. From the acrobatic orangutans that swing through Sumatran jungles to the gentle sea turtles that glide amid kaleidoscopic corals, mesmerizing creatures await, whether you wish to explore on land or in the water.

Delight in the chance to spot eight of the world’s 18 penguin species, four of which are only found in New Zealand and the Subantarctic islands. (See pg. 17.)
Yakushima Island’s mossy forests are reminiscent of a wilder, primeval Japan—and a hike here offers the chance to spot endemic sika deer and redfaced macaques peering through thousand-year-old branches. (See pg. 26.)

It’s a thrill to encounter the world’s largest lizards in their Indonesian island home of Komodo National Park—the only place to see Komodos in their natural habitat. (See pgs. 19, 24, and 25.)
In the wetlands of Kushiro Shitsugen National Park, find Japan’s only breeding population of red-crowned cranes—a once near-extinct species that stands five feet tall and is considered sacred by the local Ainu people. (See pg. 27.)
Encounter Crocodiles in the Kimberley On a scenic stretch of Australian coastline, board Zodiacs and glide into the Hunter River’s thick tangle of mangrove forests, on the lookout for the region’s prehistoric apex predator: the crocodile. (See pg. 19.)

At the heart of this epicenter of sea life, Raja Ampat’s reef system is carpeted in a tapestry of corals that harbors 1,500 types of fish, five of the world’s seven sea turtle species, and seven kinds of giant clams. (See pg. 24.)

The Heartland of Adventure: Peter Hillary on New Zealand and the Subantarctic Islands Since boyhood, New Zealander Peter Hillary has traveled his country and the world—first with his father, the renowned explorer Sir Edmund Hillary, and then as a mountaineer in his own right. These days, Hillary adds ‘guest speaker’ to his repertoire, sharing his knowledge of the natural world with our travelers. Here, Hillary gives his hometown perspective on what makes New Zealand an exceptional place to visit, and why the Subantarctic islands are where “the real adventure begins!”
12
Clockwise from far left: Peter Hillary, New Zealand Sub-Antarctic Islands; Peter as a child with his parents; Campbell Albatross in flight above Zodiac along remote Campbell Island, New Zealand; Hiking in ancient beech tree forest, Auckland Island Archipelago.
Do you remember your earliest experiences on the water?
They were on sailing boats, at home in New Zealand. My father would organize yacht expeditions, and we’d bring the boat right up to the edge of a rock pinnacle and make ascents straight from the boat. I quickly realized it’s an incredible way to visit remote destinations.
What is the advantage of exploring New Zealand by sea?
Of course there is the comfort of being settled in your cabin for the duration, but the most important aspect is getting to see places that are difficult or impossible to reach by land or air. This is certainly the case with the Subantarctic islands—you visit little islands where people once lived, but have long since gone. These magical spots have truly been left to the wildlife, and the only way to see them is by ship.
What do you love most about your country?
We have beautiful landscapes and spectacular wildlife, but I love getting out there—even to explore other parts of my own country—and I think that’s a very New Zealand thing. In southern New Zealand, we have the impressive snow-capped peaks of the Southern Alps, and fiord lands much like Norway’s, with flooded valleys reaching into vertical mountains—it’s stunningly beautiful. On the Subantarctic islands, you have beaches crowded with elephant seals and albatrosses, and great rafts of petrels out on the sea.
Why is it important to raise awareness of this part of the world?
The Subantarctic islands are an extraordinary window into what mainland New Zealand was like before humans arrived. It’s a reminder of the impact that humanity has on the natural world, and that we need to preserve these wild, untamed places.
I grew up in Auckland, the largest city in the north.
Join one of our two final departures to the Subantarctic islands on Southern Odyssey: New Zealand and the Subantarctic Islands. (See pg. 17.) 13
New Zealand, Australia & the Subantarctic Islands On a voyage down under, discover Australia’s Kimberley plateau, with its tropical grasslands and sandstone gorges cut by plunging waterfalls and gemlike pools. Or take in the superlative scenery of New Zealand and the rarely visited sub-Antarctic islands, home to a vast array of endemic flora and fauna found nowhere else on Earth.
