Experience Northern Europe from a New Perspective

Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic are united in a shared mission to take curious travelers deeper into wild and storied places that paint a richer picture of our world. Together, we craft itineraries that inspire and transform, pushing the boundaries of discovery to offer wholly unique experiences led by the foremost experts on your destination.

Small Ships Built for Discovery

A fleet of small, purpose-built ships play host to our Northern European voyages. The 81-cabin N ational Geographic Explorer is the quintessential expedition vessel, equally at home on the high seas or in small harbors. Our state-of-the-art sister ships National Geographic Endurance and National Geographic Resolution each feature 76 cabins, sleek Scandinavian design, and special amenities such as infinity hot tubs and twin saunas.

For our voyage through Scotland’s highlands and islands, we charter the 25-cabin Lord of the Glens, one of the only ships of its kind that can navigate the open waters off the country’s coastline and narrow inland waterways, like the scenic Caledonian Canal.

Savor the Flavors of Your Destination

Sampling local cuisine is a highlight of European travel, and we take great care to bring the continent’s culinary riches to the meals you enjoy on board. Each ship’s executive chef designs innovative menus that feature essential dishes from the regions you visit, while special onshore experiences—like a cream tea in Cornwall and a herring processing demonstration in Iceland—invite you to forge even deeper connections to your destination through local culinary traditions.

with Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic

Actively Explore Every Day

Our itineraries feature a range of activities designed to immerse you in your spectacular surroundings. Hike the soaring peaks of the enchanting Lofoten Islands, try your hand at Irish hurling, or spend a day immersed in the ancient traditions of a Faroese town. No matter the expedition, you will be able to explore your way—and at your own pace—every day.

Travel with a Veteran Team

Explore with an expedition team that is passionate about understanding the world around us: historians who give context to medieval castles and ancient stone circles, cultural experts who

interpret traditional dances, archaeologists who bring the ruins of antiquity to life. Many of our veteran guides are based in the destinations we travel to and have worked with us for decades.

Take Great Photos with the Pros

A Lindblad ExpeditionsNational Geographic certified photo instructor (CPI) travels aboard every voyage and a National Geographic Photography Expert joins select departures. These pros are available to assist travelers with everything from camera settings to composition. On select ships, travelers also have access to a complimentary OM System Photo Gear Locker that allows you to test new lenses, camera bodies, and more.

ALL IN: Activities and excursions are always included in the voyage price.

Faroe Islands.

Our small ships sail deftly among windswept archipelagos, through historic canals, and into open water, inviting you to see Europe’s seascapes through the eyes of the explorers who came before. Wake up daily in a new destination, without the hassle of boarding trains, transferring at airports, or changing hotels.

Expertly Crafted Coastal European Adventures

In the northern reaches of Europe, little-known wonders are found along captivating seafronts—treasures like an ancient basalt sea cave in Scotland; the Callanish Standing Stones, which predate Stonehenge; and a glittering Icelandic glacial lagoon.

To sail Northern Europe with Lindblad ExpeditionsNational Geographic is to encounter both the iconic and unfamiliar, exploring a wide range of geographies to gain unique perspectives on the threads that connect their histories and cultures.

We take you to the front doors of grand medieval cities and picturesque harbors, approaching them in an authentic, time-honored way and immersing you in their illustrious histories. And the special experiences we arrange on shore with local chefs, fishermen, musicians, and art curators help you forge deeper connections to the cultures that helped shape these storied places. Explore Northern Europe with Lindblad ExpeditionsNational Geographic and discover a fresh perspective on the continent’s timeless treasures.

Introducing a New Icelandic Voyage

We are thrilled to announce that we have added a captivating new voyage to our selection of Icelandic offerings: Fire & Ice: An 8-Day Sail Around Iceland, poised to set sail in 2025.

Our newest expedition in Iceland will complete a full circumnavigation of the island nation, allowing complete immersion in its many wonders during eight adventurefilled days, and complementing our six-day Wild Iceland Escape and ten-day Circumnavigation of Iceland

An abundance of nonstop flights from the United States make travel to Reykjavík effortless; fly from the eastern seaboard in just over five hours and find yourself amid Iceland’s otherworldly landscapes. Exploring aboard our fleet, you’ll enjoy the added ease of unpacking once and letting us take you along remote coastlines brimming with unique wildlife and geological wonders.

Goðafoss Waterfall, Iceland.

Go Beyond the Blue Lagoon

The area in and around Reykjavík has become a popular stopover for travelers who want to take in the sights of the capital and soak in the famous Blue Lagoon. But the authentic heart of Iceland lies in its remote landscapes, rugged interior, and hard-to-reach coastal gems—and exploring by expedition ship on any of our Icelandic itineraries is the perfect way to venture deep into the country’s most secluded corners.

Cruise by Zodiac to the base of thundering waterfalls. Sail from the open ocean into towering fjords and watch them narrow as you approach volcanic beaches. Go ashore in small towns and villages that were only accessible by water up until the late 20th century. Along the way, take in Iceland’s hidden beauty and secluded rural cultures with the local guides, experts, and musicians who accompany our journey.

Exploration for Every Generation

Our expeditions to Iceland have something for everyone: the grade schooler fascinated by Vikings and Icelandic folklore, the teenager or college grad with a newfound interest in the climate sciences, the grandparent who wants to observe arctic terns and puffins. Each voyage offers a range of activities, from leisurely photo walks along black-sand beaches to thrilling mountain bike adventures through the remote highlands.

We also recently began offering our exclusive program for young explorers —the National Geographic Expeditions Adventurers program—on every departure of our three dedicated Icelandic voyages. Now, guests 18 and under can learn to explore Iceland like scientists with the help of our certified field educators, who are experts at using the wild as a natural classroom.

Explore Beyond the Ordinary

Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic voyages are expertly curated to include unique destinations and excursions that reveal a different side of Northern Europe. Alongside our knowledgeable expedition teams and handpicked local experts, enjoy unexpected adventures, from an immersive village visit in the Faroe Islands to a hurling demonstration in the Irish city of Cobh

Get a Bird’s Eye View of the Lofoten Islands

Hike the Northern Reaches of Continental Europe

Venture to Sørøya, a pristine Arctic isle off the northern coast of Norway, and set out on foot to discover this incredibly remote, windswept wilderness of emerald peaks and high-mountain lakes. (See pg. 24)

Try Your Hand at Hurling

Visit a local hurling club in Cobh for a demonstration of this stickand-ball game with Gaelic origins. Meet the players, then pick up a wooden hurley and try your hand at passing the sliotar down the field. (See pg. 16)

The Old World Through a New Lens

In his three decades as a Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic certified photo instructor (CPI), David Cothran has helped our guests photograph 100 countries on all seven continents. Recently back from Northern Europe, he is newly energized by the region's richly varied offerings, which he believes are best viewed through the lens.

Wherever I go with Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic, I focus on helping travelers tell the stories of their voyage. In Northern Europe, I think the best stories are found in the back corners and tiny islands—and because we are traveling the region by ship, we have rare access to beautiful and wild places, like the magnificent bird cliffs in northern Scotland and the turf-roofed cottages of the Faroe Islands.

We always see things in these remote places that make surprising and wonderful photography subjects. Of course, we still visit some big cities and

famous sites. But we focus on going beyond the expected highlights because we want to experience Europe through the eyes of the people who live there—that is, in a richer, more complex way.

The continent is such a wonderfully diverse place—there are so many different environments, people, and cultures. And it’s a wonderful place for serendipity. When you join us here, be ready for unexpected moments, and you’ll find many interesting stories to tell through your lens.

Travel in Good Company Mary Robinson

On 2025 departures of Ancient Isles: England, Ireland & Scotland, travelers will be joined for a portion of their journey by the renowned Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland, chair of The Elders, and the former UN special envoy on climate change.

Mary Robinson is one of the world’s most respected advocates for climate justice. Her new book, Climate Justice, has received praise from former world leaders and the environmental and human rights community.

Robinson is a graduate of Trinity College and Harvard Law School. She holds honorary doctorates from more than 40 of the world’s most elite universities and is the recipient of the Indira Gandhi and Sydney Peace Prizes. Robinson served in the Irish Senate for 20 years before ascending to the Presidency in 1990. She is widely regarded as a groundbreaking leader who helped shape modern Ireland in a period of rapid economic growth.

In 2007, Robinson became a founding member of The Elders, an independent group of global leaders formed by Nelson Mandela to tackle the world’s most pressing issues. She was appointed as the UN special envoy on climate change in 2016 and has sounded the alarm when extreme weather events have disproportionately affected the world’s most vulnerable populations.

Robinson is looking forward to returning to the Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic fleet as a guest speaker on the Ireland portion of our journey. She brings the thoughtful leadership of a former head of state, a grandmother’s passionately felt concern for the future, and the compelling stories of the thousands she has met traveling the world as a champion for climate justice and human rights. Among our travelers, she is known for sparking meaningful conversations and framing climate issues in solvable terms, leaving guests hopeful and inspired to change the course of our planet’s future.
