Our Ships: The Ideal Base for In-Depth Exploration The small and nimble ships in the Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic

fleet are designed to provide up-close experiences in the planet’s wildest and most remote places. In North America, that means navigating narrow fjords

to reach remote, old-growth rainforests; going ashore on uninhabited islands to stroll atop coastal bluffs; and slipping past shifting sandbars to anchor in serene lagoons rich with marine life.

Each vessel is stocked with a fleet of Zodiacs that allow us to sail without

being dependent on ports or piers,

while our kayaks and paddleboards

let you glide into inlets to watch sea

lions at play or safely observe a bear

feeding in a quiet cove. When we’re not out exploring, open decks and large

windows keep travelers connected to extraordinary views of sapphire seas and the marine life that frequents these rich waters.

We want your time on board to be as rewarding as your time on shore. Our

team of experts—naturalists, cultural experts, and certified photo instructors— will be on hand, giving compelling lectures and engaging in lively conversa-

tions with our guests. Inviting and comfortable public spaces foster a spirited shipboard life, while our sustainable seafood and regional produce program give you a taste of North America’s wild bounty.

ALL IN: Activities and excursions are always included in the voyage price.

The Art of Expedition Photography On a Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic voyage, photography is never an afterthought—it’s central to the expedition experience. Every departure is accompanied by a Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic certified photo instructor (CPI), who helps guests capture incredible images of the places we explore. Select voyages are also joined by a National Geographic Photography Expert—pros like Ralph Lee Hopkins, the founder of our Expedition Photography program. Here, he shares some of his top tips for photographing your adventure so you’ll be ready to zoom in the moment you step on board.

Look for the Establishing Shot

Visually telling the story of your expedition starts by conveying an overall sense of place. You want a striking image that captures the essence of the destination and helps answer the question, “Where did you go on your expedition?”

Use Your Smartphone

As the image quality of smartphone cameras has improved, their use for expedition photography has grown exponentially. You don’t need a ton of fancy equipment to get a memorable shot, and many travelers are now using their smartphones to photograph expeditions.

8

Be Ready for Action

Capturing wildlife behavior and movement may be the most challenging aspect of shooting on expedition. You can increase your odds of success by setting the camera to burst mode—which captures multiple frames with a fast shutter speed—then prefocus where the action is likely to happen.

Embrace the Photographer’s Mantra

Heading out with my camera, I always think of this mantra: light, composition, moment. I look for provocative light, create a strong composition, then wait for a sense of the moment.

Photography Expeditions Our dedicated photography expeditions give travelers the chance to focus their experience on North America’s captivating photo opportunities. On these special departures, a National Geographic Photography Expert travels alongside us, providing inspiration and in-depth instruction for every skill level. Visit expeditions.com/photo for details.

Zoom to Simplify the Frame

The most impactful images are often simple by design. Zoom lenses offer flexibility when it comes to crafting different compositions and eliminate distracting elements from the scene, especially when taking photographs from the deck of a ship. TEST & LEARN: Borrow high-tech equipment from the ship’s OM System Photo Gear Locker.

Southeast Alaska: The Ultimate Classroom Naturalist Kim Baldwin has a dual role aboard the Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic fleet: in addition to interpreting our wild surroundings for guests, she also serves as a certified field educator. Here, she explains how she transforms Southeast Alaska into the ultimate classroom for kids and teens.

10

My role as a certified field educator is to mentor the young people who travel with us and expose them to nature in a way that encourages them to develop observation, communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. Young people are naturally curious, and coming to Southeast Alaska allows that curiosity to bloom. The region is majestic, with snow-covered mountains, temperate forests, glacier-carved fjords, and other wild areas to explore. Traveling by small ship lets us go deep into this pristine sanctuary and witness creatures at close range in their natural habitat. We’re likely to see humpback whales, sometimes engaged in cooperative feeding called bubble-netting. If we’re lucky, we’ll spot black or brown bears along the shore. When the tide is out, they come to the water’s edge to feed—it’s a rare and wonderful thing.   The ship is equipped with a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) that our young explorers can drive along the seafloor to document what is living below us. We also collect plankton, put it under the microscope,

and display it on a large screen to show the microfiber pollution in the water. This is real science, and it makes ecology lessons more tangible for young people. One of the other great draws here is the glaciers—these beautiful blue chunks of ice that we get to maneuver through. On board, we’ll make ice cream sundae glaciers, where we use ice cream and whipped cream to show the difference in densities of the snow on top of glacial ice. It’s a delicious analogy. Another activity involves allowing a chunk of glacial ice to melt and saving the water for watercolor paintings. The paintings take on a different meaning when you’re using 500-year-old ice. Ultimately, we hope these experiences will help young people make connections between conservation and the abundance of life around them, and that they take what they learned in the wild back home. A week in Southeast Alaska could be the spark that ignites a love for nature that lasts their entire lives.

11

Savor the Flavors of Your Destination Sampling local cuisine is a highlight of your ship experience, and we take great care to bring the culinary riches of your destination to every meal you enjoy on board. Our executive chefs design innovative menus that feature modern takes on classic cuisine as well as essential dishes from the regions you visit. In North America, we have also cultivated sustainable farm-to-table programs that incorporate the freshest ingredients into daily meals while supporting local agriculture and seafood industries. Along North American coastlines, the convergence of rich waters and fertile valleys gives rise to a culinary bounty that you can savor along your journey. Ship chefs provision vessels as we sail, shopping at farms for fresh and sustainable ingredients. Our certification as a Food Alliance Supply Chain Ally ensures that dishes are derived from humanely raised animals and that regional wildlife habitats are protected in food production, while our Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch certification means that our seafood is harvested in environmentally responsible ways. For guests, these certifications and relationships with local purveyors translate to menus that are unique to each departure and crafted from what is fresh at the very moment they are on the water. Culinary experiences also extend to your time on shore, with opportunities to meet farmers and fishers and to forge even deeper connections with local food cultures.
