Linden New Art Inc (Linden) aims to be a centre of creative excellence. As a home for new art we are open to bold ideas, to different ways of experiencing and seeing the world and oneself. We have established a strong reputation as a leading public gallery that focuses on presenting new contemporary art. Our exhibitions, events, printed and online resources provide audiences with the opportunity to learn, debate and explore contemporary art practice. As a key cultural asset for St Kilda and the broader Melbourne community, we are proud to have been supporting contemporary art for over 30 years.

ABOUT US

Linden focuses on presenting the work of mid-career artists to ensure that we support and engage with artists at this critical time in their career development. We believe displaying work by these artists provides them with an important opportunity to create a distinct body of work that extends their practice and brings new work to our audiences.

Linden encourages our visitors to explore new art, experience new ideas and promotes new ways of thinking by providing starting points for conversations about the world that we inhabit. We believe this role is an important part of contemporary art and we aim to foster a curious audience that is open to engaging with new approaches and sometimes challenging viewpoints. Linden’s vision is to be one of Australia’s leading public contemporary art spaces. We aim to: > Exhibit quality new contemporary art by mid-career artists > Support and mentor artists engaged with Linden New Art > Connect with our community by providing exhibitions, education and public programs > Operate a well governed, managed and sustainable organisation.

With 2017 being a year of plunging in, 2018 year has been a year of settling in. We moved into our wonderfully renovated building mid-year and what a magnificent achievement for all involved. The feedback we have had from artists, the community, artworld friends, supporters, donors and stakeholders has been terrific. This has given us a very real energy shot with renewed and successful efforts in fundraising. Even with the many and varied costs of moving back we have finished this year with a small deficit of $4,901. The Board is very pleased with this result as we had to manage the complexity of being out of our building for longer than we had hoped.

CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT

Specifically, I would like to draw attention to the efforts of Melinda and her team. Every one of them had an unrelenting focus on improving and developing our income streams with the following achievements:

> Increasing our core operational funding from the City of Port Phillip from July 2018 to invest more time for staff to work on the programs, events and income generation to ensure our future success > Formed a significant new partnership with the University of Melbourne that will see the Linden team working closely in mentoring and supporting the next generation of arts leaders which is valued at over $100,000 > Increasing our reach by developing the Linden Contemporaries program and attracting 33 members and securing Creative Partnerships Australia Plus1 funding that will match every dollar we raise up to $25,000 by the 31 May 2019. The results speak for themselves and on behalf of the Board I would like to congratulate the team on these successes.

Our first major event for the year was our annual Linden Postcard Show held at Domain House with close to 1,900 visitors – celebrated by a buzzing opening, highly popular community programs, 28 school groups and great feedback from visitors and supporters. Continuing our strategy of building our brand beyond the four walls of our traditional ‘home’ we exhibited Nicole Newman’s exhibition Genaivsheh Shtiklech (Tricky Pieces) at Tasma Terrace in Parliament Place, East Melbourne. This immersive and highly personal exhibition attracted a very responsive audience. To complement the 2018 National NAIDOC theme ‘Because of her, we can!” Linden exhibited work produced for the first time in a public gallery setting at Domain House by a mother-daughter Anangu artists Puna Yanima and Linda Puna. The media response to this exhibition was remarkable and testament to the impact of this sensitively curated exhibition which was accompanied by a soundscape of the women discussing their work and response to country in language. Our Welcome Back to Linden exhibitions with Julia deVille’s Wholeness and the Implicit Order and Natalie Ryan’s Imaging the Dead proved to be blockbuster with 4,000 plus visitors, over $500,000 worth of media coverage and a highly engaged social media following. The work in these exhibitions was stunning, thought provoking and quite beautiful. What a privilege for Linden New Art to exhibit this work! The community engagement program focussed on encouraging conversations on themes surrounding death – often a difficult discussion and yet one that needs to happen. A particularly successful initiative has been our Linden Contemporaries program – a very engaged community of supporters and donors. With an active program of invited guests attending private contemporary art collections we have seen our supporter community embrace this program with alacrity. Notable visits included a tour of the home of Paul Banks and Nick Perkins and the Justin Art House Museum. As we drew to a close of the year the Board took an essential step to refresh and renew board membership. With a long-term member coming to the end of their tenure, Todd Beavis, the Board collectively agreed to my proposal to step down from the Board as Chair and Board member. This step allows the Board to seek two new members and keep our momentum, energy and nimbleness very much alive. May I say thank you to Todd for his many years of thoughtful counsel and guidance. It has been a tremendous privilege to work with such a committed and talented Board. I have learned a great deal and enjoyed working with every board member through some interesting, challenging and exciting times. Catherine Easton has stepped in as Chair supported by Jeremy Blackshaw as Deputy Chair and I am grateful to both. Melinda and her team have been an inspiration and I have been left with an unflinching desire to see mid-career artists flourish. I am confident Linden New Art is well placed to support this cohort and has already built an enviable reputation for this focus. To all our sponsors, supporters and in particular the City of Port Phillip and Creative Victoria – may I say, on behalf of the Board, thank you for the faith and support you have given to Linden – it has been a pleasure working with you. We are on an exciting new path and I will be watching closely and with great pride. SARAH BRENNAN Chairperson 2018 May 2019

2018 was another important year for Linden and one that saw us to continue be on the move. During this time of change we continued to partner with a range of organisations across Melbourne whilst our beloved home in Acland Street home was upgraded. The Linden team saw this as an exciting opportunity, to stretch our practice and extend the reach of our exhibitions and events by being In Residence at Domain House at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne and presenting exhibitions and events with a range of partners including the National Trust of Australia (Victoria), the Shrine of Remembrance and the City of Port Phillip library services.

DIRECTOR’S REPORT

Many of our achievements could not have been undertaken without the incredible support and guidance of Linden’s Board and I thank them for their support as we worked in an unfamiliar spaces and environments prior to our return home.

And return home we did, to a stunning building with increased exhibition space and improvements to our space to increase our accessibility in late August 2018. All of this could not have been possible with our dedicated and professional team of arts managers. In particular, our staff Madeline Ferme, Sophie Gerhard, Juliette Hanson, Lyn Johnson, Jasmin McNeill and Tom Pender who have embraced the joys of moving office (more than once) and setting up exhibitions and events in unfamiliar spaces. They share an amazing focus, commitment to raising Linden’s profile and improving our program. I thank each of them for all their hard work and focus in ensuring that we presented a strong exhibition program, a dynamic range of events and forged partnerships with new organisations and spaces to ensure our growth. My thanks also to our dedicated team of volunteers who have welcomed visitors to the gallery. In 2018, Linden presented six individual exhibitions displaying the work of 849 artists. Linden exhibited 1,974 new artworks and 22 previously shown artworks. With so much change, not being open for operation for over five months, our visitation was impacted, and we attracted just under 10,000 visitors to the gallery.

2018 set Linden on an upward trajectory in our development and fundraising activities. From January to October we continued to be stewarded by our mentor, Tehmi Sukhla from the Australian Museum, as part of the Creative Partnerships Fundraising Mentor program. Tehmi worked closely with us throughout the year and we thank her for advice and guidance. Rewarding outcomes from this program were put into place including a Fundraising Plan for 2019-20 and the development of a compelling Case for Support document. With the renovation of the historic home of Linden well and truly underway, we set out with our Case for Support in hand to raise the funds needed so that we could upgrade the back buildings that house our community programs. The document played a vital role in our annual fundraising campaign, with private donations exceeding our target.

DEVELOPMENT REPORT

We were also successful in receiving grants from the following funds which will enable us to finish the upgrades and start delivering programs from 2019 towards the refurbishment of the community spaces: > Palais Theatre Community Fund > Federal Government’s Stronger Communities Program Towards the delivery of community programs and events > Elwood Community Grants Program > Palais Theatre Community Fund

Another initiative that received philanthropic support was the virtual reality headsets developed for the Julia deVille Wholeness & the Implicit Order exhibition. The Gordon Darling Foundation generously provided support that enabled this exciting initiative to enhance the audience experience of the exhibition, an experimental first for Linden and Julia deViIle. In October 2018, Linden was awarded a Creative Partnerships Plus 1 Funding grant, which will enable us to match every dollar we raise up to $25,000 until 31 May 2019. This funding will help us leverage partnerships with other organisations to help support the programs and services we provide. This is an exciting opportunity for Linden supporters to double their impact and with the campaign kicking off in late 2018 and we look forward to reporting back to you on a successful result next year. Our Linden Contemporaries program continues to grow in numbers and reputation. We hosted three key events over our first year and thank all the generous supporters who opened their homes and studios to us. We look forward to welcoming you all to an event in 2019. Linden continued to be on the move in 2018, with our exhibition programs being presented at a variety of spaces including Domain House, Tasma Terrace and then back at our Acland Street home. The year began with the popular Linden Postcard Show 2017-18, the design of which was inspired by the work of Mondrian. This exhibition attracted over 1,000 entries and artworks covered every wall. Following in close succession, was Nicole Newman’s exhibition Genaivisheh Shtiklech (Tricky Pieces), which was shown at the National Trust of Australia’s headquarters located at Tasma Terrace in East Melbourne. This exhibition was the result of a partnership with the National Trust, who invited Linden to present a contemporary art exhibition in their heritage spaces. Newman’s intricate sculptures, along with a magical sound track provided a surprising and intriguing addition to this venue.

CURATOR’S REPORT

Our offsite exhibition program came to a close at Domain House with a partnerhsip with the Royal Botanical Gardens with an exhibition as part of the Melbourne Art Fair’s satellite program. Working with guest curator David Hagger and Mimili Maku Arts, we presented Wangka Kutjara, Tjukurpa Kutju. This powerful exhibition was programmed to coincide with NAIDOC week. The work of a mother-daughter pairing was displayed at each end of the gallery space, accompanied by a soundtrack of the artists speaking to each other in language. In late August, we moved back into our renovated home and worked closely with artists Julia deVille and Natalie Ryan to present ambitious and challenging exhibitions that marked our return with a bang! Natalie Ryan’s works resulted from a residency with the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences at the University of Melbourne. Whilst Julia deVille’s exhibition took over the ground floor galleries and featured new holographic work that was supported by deVille’s mentor Dr Martina Mrongovius from New York’s Centre for the Holographic Arts. Rounding out the year was the 28th Linden Postcard Show. Following the positive reception of the grid-like design of the previous show, just over 900 works were hung in blocks according to themes such as animals, landscapes, Melbourne and portraits. Government representative and arts industry professionals were generous in their support throughout the year, in assisting us in the development of exhibitions and officially opening exhibitions. They include: > Roger McIlroy, Art Dealer, who opened Nicole Newman’s exhibition > Anna Wattler, Art Centre Manager, Mimili Maku Arts, for assisting us with Wangka Kutjara, Tjukurpa Kutju > N’Arweet Carolyn Briggs from the Boon Wurrung Foundation, for the opening and welcome to country at Wangka Kutjara, Tjukurpa Kutju > Cr Bernadene Voss, Mayor, City of Port Phillip and author Leah Kaminsky for speaking at the VIP Preview of Julia deVille and Natalie Ryan’s exhbitions > Lisa Skerrett, Producer & Reporter for ABC TV’s The Mix, for opening, Julia deVille’s and Natalie Ryan’s exhibitions to the public > Professor Su Baker, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Engagement) at the University of Melbourne, for opening the Linden Postcard Show 2018-19 VIP Preview > Lucy McIntosh, Bryony Nainby and Penny Teale for judging the Linden Postcard Show 2018-19. Genaivisheh Shtiklech (Tricky Pieces) presented sixteen new works by Melbourne based mid-career artist Nicole Newman. These small-scale sculptures were intended to be somewhat of a puzzle to the viewer.

Handcrafted Perspex boxes contained intricately silver-smithed forms from the natural world and the artist’s own imagination. The works contain hidden messages engraved in Yiddish and multiple layers of meaning to be found in the combination of words, visual puns and surreal imagery.

Drawing upon the 2018 National NAIDOC theme Because of her, we can! Wangka Kutjara, Tjukurpa Kutju (language for Two Voices, One Tjukurpa) presented the mother-daughter relationship of Anangu women Puna Yanima and Linda Puna

for the first time in a Melbourne gallery. The duo’s work mapped out sacred sites and documented the everyday life of the Mimili community and surrounding Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands in the northwest of South Australia.

“Wangka Kutjara Tjukurpa Kutju is a very special exhibition focusing on the strength and importance of women in community” The Design Files, 24.08.18 VISITOR FEEDBACK “I loved the exhibition” Anonymous

“Very moving pieces from mother Puna and daughter Linda artists. I viewed their works over and over...so very different where the mother paints with unexpected colours, and a flat map became multi-dimensional to me. The strokes and vibrancy of the daughter so different, but so bold…and with their story I found myself imagining their daily trip to and work at their local cultural centre and their trip home, and their relationship at home… I don’t imagine their lives are easy, yet their works are so alive, and spoke so much to me. To celebrate Linden New Art’s return to our St Kilda home, we presented major solo exhibition of new work by leading Australian mid-career artist Julia deVille. The renowned jeweller and taxidermist will explore the world of holography

and VR in her first solo exhibition since 2014. For Wholeness and the Implicit Order, deVille created an immersive environment using sound, smell and optical illusion, as she reimagined the original Victorian rooms of the gallery. The exhibition was deVille’s largest installation to date.

JULIA DEVILLE

By using technology, deVille engaged her viewers in an exploration of consciousness and reality. She wished to open up a conversation about the implicit interconnectedness of all things and the importance of treating all life with respect; beliefs that form the core of her practice. ARTIST ENGAGEMENT > 80% found involvement in the exhibition did provide enhancement to existing skills that will be important for their future working lives > 50% found the involvement in the exhibition enabled them to experience a sense of cultural identity & belonging > 100% of artists found the exhibition provided new ways of thinking or understanding > 80% found the experience of exhibiting at Linden extremely satisfying

“I created my best body of work, it was the perfect venue aesthetically to present the exhibition.” Julia de Ville, November 2018 MEDIA

“Together they create an elaborate, augmented world, an afterlife, in which deVille’s creatures and the viewer can go on living.” Art Almanac, 01.09.18 “deVille … has undertaken her largest-ever installation in conjunction with Linden New Art … deVille turns the gallery’s Victorianera rooms in to a fantasy museum of taxidermy, antique furniture, audiovisual work and various combinations of the above” John McDonald, The Age, 15.09.18 “Wholeness and the Implicit Order is one those rare opportunities to see some of Julia’s most exciting works to date … I cannot wait to see this show in person” Kylie Dexter, Beautiful Bizarre, 27.08.18 “Almost six years in the making, the scale of this project is immense and blends time-honoured craft techniques like wood turning and taxidermy with the most cutting edge technology.” Art Guide, 11.09.18

WHOLENESS & THE IMPLICIT ORDER

VISITOR FEEDBACK > 92% were very satisfied by their visit. > 95% were very likely to recommend Linden to family, friends or colleagues > 83% found the exhibition to be enriching, moving, enjoyable, captivating, awe-inspiring and thought provoking > 83% found they gained new knowledge, ideas and insight from their visit to the exhibition

To launch our new upstairs gallery space, Linden presented the work of former studio artist Natalie Ryan. Ryan’s practice explores themes that surround the aesthetic representation of animal cadavers and natural sciences, throughout history and in contemporary art. This exhibition presented a series of Ryan’s photographs that depict anatomical veterinary specimens alongside corresponding sculptural works.

25.08.18 > 04.11.18

These works explored the idea of the specimen as portrait and further the artist’s investigation into the connections between art and science. Ryan aims to open up conversations about death and the way we view such imagery.

NATALIE RYAN

ARTIST ENGAGEMENT > 100% found involvement in the exhibition did not provides enhancement to existing skills that will be important for their future working life > 90% of artists found the involvement in the exhibition enabled them to experience a sense of cultural identity & belonging > 100% of artists found the exhibition provided new ways of thinking or understanding > 100% found the experience of exhibiting at Linden extremely satisfying

“The benefits of exhibiting at Linden included; exposure to a large audience through the galleries profile, data base and ongoing marketing of the exhibition. A unique space to exhibit with a professional and supportive team. Being involved in a number of events and activities with the public, some of which incorporated external perspectives from other industries around the conceptual themes of the show. As Linden continued to be on the move in 2018, we remained committed to delivering a range of rich and engaging programs throughout the year. Our community engagement programs focused on developing strong partnerships with like-minded organisations and building our audience reach surrounding our St Kilda home in August. In early 2018, Linden introduced Visual Thinking Strategies to our education program. Visual Thinking Strategies supports students of all levels to express oneself and listen to peers through carefully facilitated group discussion. Using the artwork on display in the exhibition, students engage in critical thinking through an open-ended discussion about what they see.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT REPORT Linden’s community engagement programs thrived through a willingness to take risks, experiment and respond quickly to our audience feedback. Our programs offered opportunities for visitors and schools to explore, challenge and deepen their connections with the themes and ideas presented in our current exhibitions. Our programs also continued to provide opportunities for artists to engage in professional development through our Artist Speakeasy’s. Throughout 2018, Linden created new partnerships with: > The Art Room and HoloCenter, New York to deliver masterclass workshops > Alternating Current Art Space to engage with new artist audiences > The Shrine of Remembrance for a special collaborative event called The Art of War > Melbourne Art Fair, The School of Life, Melbourne Writers festival, the Death over Dinner movement and i.e. Community for a range of special events.

IMAGE > Visitors at Linden’s Community Day, 2018. Photograph > Theresa Harrison Photography. 48

Linden continued successful partnerships with: > The City of Port Phillip Libraries to program Crafternoon’s and Artist Speakeasy’s in their venues > The Royal Botanic Gardens to deliver programs alongside our exhibitions and > The National Gallery of Victoria to present their kids on tour program. Linden’s willingness to experiment and be adaptable to our audience feedback was key to the ongoing success of our community engagement programs while Linden was on the move. Linden introduced: > Free drop in activities throughout the exhibitions including a community wall and family activity called Mapping My Home > A new structure for On Holidays at Linden as a free drop in activity for kids and family throughout school holidays > A Community Day for St Kilda locals to celebrate the return to our St Kilda home > Four week long art classes responding to the desire of participants for opportunities to deepen their skills development > A new event series called Strange Bedfellows to further engage creative thinking and find the connections between unrelated topics. Linden greatly benefited from partnerships with like-minded organisations to capture new audiences and bring them home with us to St Kilda. Through programming events in external venues and building new partnerships, we were able to deliver a successful range of experimental, entertaining, educational and adaptive community engagement programs. “The students thought that the volume of work was incredible and it made the students realise how hard artists work to produce an exhibition such as Julie deVille’s. The Visual Thinking Strategies conversations were most valuable as students have begun critical thinking sessions this year, so it was excellent to link critical thinking with the artworks.” Kymberley Peace, Art & Design Teacher, Melbourne Montessori School, October 2018 MELBOURNE MONTESSORI SCHOOL After the success of the first school group tour from Melbourne Montessori School, year 7, 8 & 9 art students returned to Julie deVille and Natalie Ryan exhibitions for Visual Thinking Strategies conversations, a curator tour, observational drawing activity and a writing task to further contemplate the themes and ideas explored in the exhibitions. Learn new skills in our special artist-led masterclasses. DRAWING MASTERCLASS > WAYS OF SEEING In this Drawing Masterclass, artist Erika Gofton from The Art Room will lead you to use the language of drawing as a way to not only see, but to also understand personal objects that are precious to you. Ways of Seeing takes inspiration from the exhibition Genaivisheh Shtiklech (Tricky Pieces) by Melbourne-based artist Nicole Newman. Aspects of Newman’s personal history often appear in her artworks, such as Untitled 11 (2015, pictured) which carries the Yiddish phrase “A sach mentshen zehen, nor vainik fun zai farshtaien” which means ‘many people see, but only a few understand’. This phrase represents the priority Newman gives to creativity in further knowing oneself, and in understanding the world around us.Participants must bring a selection of small objects to draw. These can be personal objects, old photographs or natural objects like plants, fossils or animal bones. All other materials provided. No previous drawing experience necessary. MASTERCLASSES

ART CLASSES > WATERCOLOUR PAINTING Learn from one of Melbourne’s foremost botanical artists John Pastoriza-Piñol in this exciting new workshop series. Open to all skills levels, John takes you step-by-step through the process of botanical watercolour painting. Offered on four Thursday afternoons in May 2018, John will be sharing his specialised knowledge of composition and drawing techniques, painting application and colour theory. Classes like this are always more fun with friends and discount prices are available. John is a contemporary botanical artist based in Melbourne. Rich luminous hues and gorgeously exotic and rare botanical specimens epitomise John’s work, however his are much more than mere flower paintings: closer inspection reveals a certain ambiguity of form and intent directing us towards a complex narrative. A master of his medium, his perfectly executed watercolours remain true to the accuracy that is vital to botanical illustration, yet they have a fluidity and sensuality that stirs the viewer to experience more than a mere marvelling of technique Dates > Time > Venue > Cost > Attendance >

Thursday 10, 17, 24 & 31 May 3PM-5PM Emerald Hill Library & Heritage Centre, 195 Bank Street, South Melbourne $220 +$125 equipment kit per person 7

“THANKYOU for the terrific fast paced workshops. I thoroughly enjoyed the challenges of learning a new way of doing watercolour. The venue was very convenient accessible by public transport, the space, the tables and being able to use the little kitchenette were great. Had fun my other classmates and maybe we can meet up again at a follow-on class.“ Johanne Singleton - 5 stars

Our Special Events are a little bit different to our other events. They’re about experimentation and discovery of new and contemporary ideas. THE ART OF WAR > SPECIAL EVENT IN COLLABORATION WITH THE SHRINE OF REMEMBRANCE The Art of War is a unique conversation with artists Matthew Sleeth, Wendy Sharpe and Tanja Johnston from Australian National Veterans Art Museum (ANVAM) as they discuss the intersections of art and war. Hear what these artists learned as bystanders in conflict zones, and what it was like to confront the political and cultural realities we don’t see in the media. Joining the panel, Tanja Johnston will share the art programs ANVAM have developed to work with returned soldiers. Presented in collaboration with the Shrine of Remembrance. Date > Time > Venue > Cost > Attendance >

Tuesday 1 May 6PM-7.30PM The Shrine of Remembrance $5 90

SPECIAL EVENTS

PANEL FEEDBACK “Many thanks to you (Jasmin & the Linden New Art team) for your kind invitation to speak about my work at ANVAM. I enjoyed sitting alongside Matthew & Wendy, listening to their engaging experiences in the field. Thanks too Melinda for your insightful questions.” Tanja Johnson, Head of Arts Programs, ANVAM, 07.05.18

“Thanks for inviting me to be part of the event, it was a really interesting discussion and I thoroughly enjoyed myself.” Matthew Sleeth, 03.05.18 PARTICIPANT ENGAGEMENT Specifically, the results indicate: “I enjoyed the diversity of the experiences from the various guest panellists” Peter Morris, 16.5.18

“I was not sure what to expect, but thoroughly enjoyed the insight that the artists gave. It was an excellent discussion and the moderator was great.” Alissa Duke, 12.5.18 “We were presented with various artists interpretations of war – from the sublime to the ridiculous (the sign about iced coffee in a nation torn by conflict just made me want to laugh). It just goes to show that when on talks of war different people see in different ways.” Mark Moore, 11.5.18

“The event was far more relaxed that I expected, which was excellent. All the speakers were extremely interesting to listen to.” Gordon Trail, 11.5.18 “It was a really good presentation from two artists that were sent to a war zone and expressed a good story about Australian soldiers. Tanja gave a real insight into veteran artists who have suffered from going to a war zone. Very compassionate art therapist.” Rose, 11.5.18

STRANGE BEDFELLOWS > QUANTUM MECHANICS & BIBLIOTHERAPY Strange Bedfellows is our new series of talks where we present two guest speakers each discussing a separate topic. First up, we’ve got quantum mechanics and bibliotherapy. Because not many of us really ‘get’ quantum physics, or even know what bibliotherapy is, we have invited leading physicist Professor Raymond Volkas from the University of Melbourne, along with bibliotherapist Sonya Tsakalakis from The Literary Hand. The evening will go something like this: Each of our experts will present about their topics for 20 minutes only. Then it’s over to you. Ask a question, any question. But here’s the thing: both speakers must answer your question! Your question could be about quantum physics or about bibliotherapy - or something totally random just for the fun of it. Let’s see what happens and what interesting connections between these two topics can made. We have prizes for the quirkiest questions. This isn’t about art, it’s about what makes these two topics Strange Bedfellows. Date > Time > Venue > Cost > Attendance >

Saturday 1 September 5.00PM-6.30PM The Local Taphouse, 184 Carlisle Street, St Kilda East $25 includes a drink & hot chips on arrival. 20

DEATH OVER DRINKS Join artists Julia deVille and Natalie Ryan to have one of the most important conversations that Australia is not having. Inspired by themes surrounding death as explored in deVille & Ryan’s solo exhibitions, Death Over Drinks invites you to have an honest conversation about the taboo topic of death. Hosted by Rebecca Bartel, who brought the Death Over Dinner movement to Australia, participants will be invited to raise a glass to someone who has passed, before joining in the difficult conversation about how we might prepare for our own end of life. CELEBRATE HALLOWEEN > A NIGHT OF BETTER CONVERSATION DEATH We’re all going to die. Conversations about death needn’t make for a grim evening. In talking about the unspeakable, we’re going to consider what benefits there are in coming to terms with our mortality. A Night of Better Conversationis a chance to engage with minds moulded by forces different to our own, and to go beyond our comfort zone by taking risks in what we are willing to share. This event is presented in partnership with The School of Life. Date > Time > Venue > Cost > Attendance >

Linden remained “On the Move” in 2018, before making the exciting return to our St Kilda home in August. The return presented an opportunity to generate excitement amongst our loyal and local audience and gain media attention in the lead up to the renovation reveal. Linden continued to face the challenges of communicating different exhibition and event locations throughout the year. The location venues included The National Trust, Shrine of Remembrance, Port Phillip Libraries, Domain House, Alternating Current Art Space and Acland St, St Kilda. To achieve this, we created specifically designed target marketing for each venue to reach their relevant audiences including a banner on the building at The National Trust, computer screen savers for Port Phillip Libraries and customised A3 frame for Domain House. These strategies were employed alongside our standard communication channels for our existing audiences.

COMMUNICATIONS REPORT

We ensured to bring back the new audiences developed while “On the Move” by overlapping our last exhibition Wangka Kutjara, Tjukurpa Kutju at Domain House and exhibitions Julia deVille Wholeness & the Implicit Order alongside Natalie Ryan Imaging the Dead in our St Kilda home. Taking advantage of our front of house staff greetings, mailing list database and printed marketing, we communicated our move back to St Kilda to our growing audience. In the lead up to our return to St Kilda, our task was to document the renovations, tease our audience with nice photos and keep the excitement about the upcoming shows. We had high engagements with our audience via our social media channels showing snippets of the buildings with workers, the new top level and the freshly renovated windows. Linden reopened the building and new gallery spaces with our much anticipated Julia deVille and Natalie Ryan exhibitions. These exhibitions were featured widely in the media including The Age, Australian Financial Review, Australian Arts Review, Broadsheet, ABC TV & Radio and local newspapers.

74

Once back in our St Kilda home, some new strategies were also activated with the creation of visitor guides including “After an Opening” to help our new and returning audiences to better plan their visit to Linden New Art and the St Kilda surrounds. These visitor guides highlighted the most interesting assets of St Kilda with our favourites food, bars and music places. In 2018, Linden embraced the challenge of being “On the Move”, developing a new audience outside our St Kilda home and reconnecting with our St Kilda audience in our much-improved home.
