Sun‘s out. Garden‘s blooming. BBQs everywhere are firing up. The days are long and we’re all energized to make the most of them. The long awaited infusion of light has the whole town abuzz. The feeling is all too familiar, tapping into something we all know to be true: there’s simply no place like Seattle in summertime. Inspiration abounds and we inevitably apply our increased, sun-charged energy to creative projects. Whether it’s an artful culinary display, a sunny fashion statement, or an innovative approach to a home improvement project, creativity flows in excess. I hope you will harness that energy and make the most of your summer. Come to Pratt for professional instruction or set up a DIY project in the back yard; either way, I’ve got some ideas to spark your creativity!
• Bust out the paints and capture the gorgeous NW landscapes • Fire up the forge and hammer out some new garden stakes • Rev up the band saw and make yourself a new deck chair • Glass up the garden with unique sculptural elements • Craft the perfect necklace to compliment your favorite sundress • Make a mini-scrapbook to display at the family BBQ
The inspiration is endless! What are you waiting for? We’ve got projects to do! Cheers,
Steve Galatro Executive Director

One of the greatest gifts of any artistic community is the sharing of knowledge, experience and perhaps most importantly but often hard to adequately describe, the artist’s raison d'être. The latter can’t exist without an ecosystem that’s supportive of those efforts and Pratt Fine Arts Center and its students have been incredibly fortunate to have a long-standing relationship with two of the most talented and acclaimed artists in the Pacific Northwest, glass artists Sabrina Knowles and Jenny Pohlman. Pohlman and Knowles have been working together for over two decades, producing an oeuvre of distinction now residing in prestigious collections such as the Museum of American Glass and the Tacoma Art Museum. They have had a wonderfully symbiotic relationship with Pratt since the early 1980’s that has benefitted both the artists themselves and the Pratt community for which they care so deeply. Their extensive and generous involvement with Pratt continues far beyond the Pohlman Knowles High School Scholarship created in 2000. Jenny serves as a trustee on the Board of Directors, and both women have taught at Pratt, produced entire bodies of work in its hotshop, and credit early exhibitions of their work at Pratt as pivotal moments in their collective careers. Piper O’Neill recently sat down with the two women in their sunny West Seattle studio to discuss their collaborative process, their involvement with Pratt, and the driving force behind their powerful body of work created thus far.

PO: How did you initially get
involved with Pratt?
SK: I got involved with Pratt
through the prompting of my sister, Mona. In 1984 I took my first glassblowing class at Pratt and fell in love with the medium and the positive vibe at Pratt. In 1985 I made a shift in my life and decided to go back to school in the fall. I also committed myself to doing volunteer work for Pratt prior to my entering school. At the start of school in the fall I stopped my volunteer work, however, I continued to assist people in the hotshop, doing a little blowing myself and charging the furnace. Eventually I ended up as the hotshop coordinator, teaching beadmaking and off-hand figurative sculpting in the hotshop, and also renting myself. I would work at Pilchuck in the summer and practice what I had learned at Pratt in the fall, winter and spring. I did this for many years.
JP: I walked through Pratt’s doors in September 1990, after working on staff at Pilchuck through the summer. I was oriented on how to use the coldshop and sandblaster. At that time I was working solo, creating small books with sandcarved glass covers. From there I engaged in the hotshop, began teaching teens in the summers, taught adult classes, took classes, and began renting the hotshop and metal shop. Pratt was, and still is, an incredible resource for me as an evolv-
ing artist. I’m taking a class on framing this weekend, in fact. PO: What is unique about
Pratt and its hotshop and how has that affected your work?
SK: Accessibility, afford-
ability, and comradeship are what I truly find unique about Pratt. Through my time spent at Pratt I have developed many life long friendships and I believe that is true for many people.
To be able to come in and work independently, on your own schedule is amazing to me. There are very few facilities that you can take a class, attain access, and work in the studios (in multiple mediums) in the states. Pratt is truly a jewel in Seattle’s crown. JP: Pratt not only offers people the opportunity to take a vast array of classes, but also offers the opportu(continued on page 17)

nity to rent their professional studios, I was able to learn in class and fine-tune my skills working independently in the studios. By working in Pratt’s studios I became knowledgeable of what equipment I needed when I set about to establish my own studios. (Just last year I took screen-printing and after learning the technique and equipment needed, set about creating a printmaking studio in our studios.)

to both Jenny and me. He would come down from the office and hang out in the hotshop while we worked. This interaction made us feel really good (because he was the big cheese) and it also empowered us. We built our first solo show at Pratt which pretty much sold out and that was the start of it all. After that show and our first 2-month backpacking trip in Africa, Greg offered us a show at the space Pratt rented from COCA. For that show we developed many of the series that we worked on for the next decade, and of course, we made all the work at Pratt.

sion of technique. Regarding concepts, I think I can speak for both of us: we work on intuition and instinct and it may take much more time for us to completely understand why we are being driven in the directions we are taking; which brings up another point, we seem to be pursuing many directions simultaneously, working feverishly in chaos, just catching glimpses of what might be the future. It’s exhilarating, exhausting, frustrating and fascinating. We’re rushed. PO: You have amassed an
your process and concepts or themes you are addressing in your new work? SK: We are using a silk
screening technique that we learned at Bullseye Glass and Pilchuck last year. However, in those two classes we worked using kilns, so one of our goals was to incorporate this technique into the hotshop. We have several different approaches. The one in the hotshop deals a lot with portraiture- taking images from our various travels and presenting them in a unique way. Another body we are developing is what we call “ghost imagery” and another that speaks to the way people see things differently. We have made good progress but still have a way to go.
JP: It’s still very fresh for me and everyday I see more opportunities in the progres-

SK: I am inspired by our
travels, from the people we meet and the histories we learn. For these new works what inspired me first was the amazing beauty of the Himba women. In our photography of them it’s as though the portraits are saying something, what that something is exactly is a complete mystery to me, but extremely compelling. It made me want to incorporate it into to our glassblowing process to see

if we could come up with something that might compel the viewer in a way that it did me. We are still in the discovery phase of this work; it is evolving on a daily basis so some of the “why’s” and “what’s” are still out in the distance. For me there is nothing better than to get out in the world and to experience first hand what the lands we are in can teach us. Learning about the history of a country and its people is enlightening for me and it is when I am happiest. I guess our collection of objects helps me remember our trips. Each piece tells a story. JP: The tactile objects I collect are all handmade of natural materials, mostly functional, some craft. Most are worn and old. To me they are memory boxes; they are portals to a different time, climate, and culture. They anchor me in the now and simultaneously transport me. Our intent with all of our work and designs is to create contemporary work that is timeless, that can be accessed by any culture at any time. Through our travel we access people of many different cultures, religions, and status. Our experiences have increased my understanding of just how we are all one.
