Introduction
A wise man once said, “never discuss philosophy or politics in a disco environment.” FRANK ZAPPA Dear Friends, Tonight we invoke the creative spirit of Studio 54 and recreate its electric vibe. And even though we weren’t allowed to cover the floors with four inches of glitter or trot everyone in on white horses, we are certain you’re in for a wild night! Just beneath the surface of its reputation for sex, drugs, and disco, the phenomenon that was Studio 54 in the ’70s was built on spontaneity, abandon, and celebrity. From Warhol to Dali, Jagger to Jackson, Minnelli to Ross, it was in fact the artists who defined the era. They came to cut loose; everyone else came to see what they might do. Tonight we bid boldly on incredible work from hundreds of local artists and raise our paddles in support of access to art for all at Pratt Fine Arts Center. We make an important investment in the advancement of artists as we too want to see what they might do. The first to pass through the velvet rope tonight are a dazzling group of board, staff, and volunteers who leant their time and creativity to the auction planning committee. Making a glamourous entrance behind them are Pratt celebrities and auction co-chairs Madeline Dow Pennington and Adam Glant. We thank them for their service and offer them a permanent place on our VIP list. The biggest buzz on the dance floor this evening is the once-in-a-lifetime matching challenge from The Klorfine Foundation. If we meet or exceed our $300,000 goal, they will up their gift to one million dollars! Help us show our immense gratitude by giving generously and rising to meet the challenge in full. Introduction
PRATT STUDIO 54:
ALISON WYCKOFF MILLIMAN is a creative leader in
the Seattle arts community, a philanthropist and visionary. MadArt Seattle, her invention, is a program started in 2009 that supports the work of emerging artists who showcase their art in surprising venues, themes, and creations. MadArt’s new space in South Lake Union is a studio for artists to make large scale works with an emphasis on bringing the public in to see the process. Her work in the community includes leadership positions as past chair of the School of the Arts Board at University of Washington; past board member of the University of Washington Foundation; and numerous other non-profits.
GREG ROBINSON is the Executive Director and Curator
of Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, which opened in 2013. Previously he was Executive Director of the Museum of Northwest Art in La Conner, Director of William Traver Gallery in Tacoma, and Executive Director of Pratt Fine Arts Center in Seattle. Greg has participated in numerous jury processes for exhibitions and awards, and has served on the Betty Bowen Award Committee of Seattle Art Museum for 14 years. He is originally from Seattle and holds a master’s degree in Public Administration from New York University.
ROSANNA SHARPE is a native of the Pacific Northwest and has 24 years of museum experience with a focus on administration, exhibition development, and artistic publications. She holds a BFA in arts administration from Long Island University and an MFA in museum studies from Syracuse University. Rosanna has worked at institutions including the Marywood University Art Gallery in Scranton, PA, Tacoma Art Museum, Museum of Glass in Tacoma, and the Experience Music Project in Seattle. Currently, she serves as the Executive Director of Seattle’s Northwest African American Museum. In June of 2014, Rosanna participated in the Getty Leadership Institute’s Executive Program at Claremont Graduate University. She is currently a board member of the Leadership Management Network of the AAM.

Jeff Randall AUCTIONEER
Jeff Randall is one of the most highly requested auctioneers at the Stokes Auction Group, Inc. Since 2001, Jeff has conducted over 600 Benefit Auctions for Philanthropic Organizations all across the United States, which is an average of more than 46 per year. The Stokes Auction Group, located in Edgewood, WA, specializes in supporting nonprofit agencies and charitable causes in reaching their fundraising goals. Our team provides seminars, pre-event consulting, on-site support, professional auctioneers, ringmen and materials to support your event. We serve groups of all sizes in their efforts to achieve financial success.
Nichole DeMent READER
Nichole DeMent is an artist and cultural producer with nearly two decades of nonprofit arts and teaching experience. As Executive Director for CoCA (Center on Contemporary Art) in Seattle, she creates a wider appreciation for emerging and experimental arts, as well as support for individual artists through a robust membership program. She’s worked to empower artists across Washington by leading professional development workshops with Artist Trust. Her own artwork can be found in numerous private collections and the Swedish Medical Center Art Collection; she is represented at SAM Gallery and Waterworks Gallery in Friday Harbor, WA.
Entertainment LADY JANE DJ is one of the few women DJs in the Northwest. She first became interested in spinning vinyl in 2000 after listening to local Seattle DJs. Her love for music inspired Lady Jane DJ to experiment with several genres of music. Soon her mixing abilities landed her several guest spots and residencies around Seattle, Maui, San Antonio, San Diego, Phoenix and Vancouver, Canada. Through the years Lady Jane DJ has also participated in teaching DJ workshops and performing at street festivals and museums. Lady Jane DJ delivers a crowd pleasing DJ performance that has audiences really getting down to boogie! JODY KUEHNER is a Seattle-based dance artist, director, drag queen Cherdonna Shinatra,
and 2010 Spotlight Award winner. Her choreography has been presented by many contemporary dance venues including On The Boards, Velocity Dance Center, Bumbershoot, CityArtsFest, Northwest Film Forum, Century Ballroom, and Methow Arts. As Cherdonna, she currently performs regularly with drag queen superstar BenDeLaCreme (RuPaul’s Drag Race); and the awardwinning international sensations Kitten LaRue and Lou Henry Hoover. Kuehner/Cherdonna was the recipient of a 2014 Velocity Dance Center “Made In Seattle” award. Kuehner teaches Professional Contemporary Dance at Velocity, is Resident Choreographer for the LGBTQ youth choir Diverse Harmony, and has developed a Drag You workshop which she has taught nationally for movers of all backgrounds and abilities.

Bidder’s Guide BIDDER NUMBERS
You will be given a bidder number on a card at the registration desk as you enter. All sales will be recorded by that number. If you and your guest requested separate bidder numbers, you will each receive a packet listed under the individual names. If you requested a shared bidder number, you will receive a single bidder packet with two bidder cards enclosed.
SILENT AUCTIONS
To bid on items in the Silent Auction, write your bid number opposite the dollar amount on the bid sheet. You must use pre-printed bid amounts. You may skip lines if you wish. In order to guarantee your purchase of a silent auction item, enter your bid number in the “Buy It Now” box. There may be only one number in the Buy It Now box. The person whose number appears in the box will immediately own the item. At the close of each Silent Auction, an auction staff person will circle the highest written bid for each item. In the event of a dispute, at the discretion of the auctioneer, final oral bids will be taken from those who have already placed written bids.
LIVE AUCTION
The Live Auction will begin simultaneously with dinner service at 7:30pm and will continue until all items have been auctioned. To make a bid, hold up your bid card. The highest bid number acknowledged by the auctioneer will be the purchaser. In the event of a dispute between bidders, the piece may be withdrawn and new bidding initiated at the discretion of the auctioneer.

RAISE THE PADDLE AND THE KLORFINE FOUNDATION MATCH
During the Live Auction after item #35, Auctioneer Jeff Randall will invite guests to Raise their Paddle in support of Pratt’s mission. New this year is a special opportunity from the Klorfine Foundation: if Raise the Paddle reaches $300,000, the Klorfine Foundation will give Pratt $1 million. Any amount raised under $300,000 will be matched dollar-fordollar. Once Jeff Randall announces the level at which you would like to participate, hold your bid card high until he reads off your bidder number.

Enroll in Express Pay when you check in. By registering for Express Pay, you can avoid standing in line to pay for your purchases at the end of the night, and can proceed directly to pick-up. To participate in Express Pay, you may provide a designated check-in assistant with a signed imprint of your credit card, or a signed check made out to Pratt Fine Arts Center. These will be kept on file for the event, and at the close of the evening, your purchases will be paid as you have directed. Receipts for those items you purchase will be delivered to you at your table during the evening. A statement of all charges will also be mailed. If you do not make a purchase during the evening, your charge slip or check will be shredded.
CHECK OUT
Pratt Fine Arts Center accepts Visa, MasterCard, American Express, cash, and personal checks as payment for auction purchases. Express Pay participants will have received a copy of their bid form(s) at their tables. They may proceed directly to pick-up without being obliged to stop at the cashiers first. Those not using Express Pay should stop at the cashiers’ station after 9 pm to receive a statement of purchases based on their bidder number and to make payment. You will need to show this purchase statement with proof of payment to the assistants at the pick-up station.
SALES TAX, DEDUCTIBILITY, AND SERVICE FEES
No sales tax will be charged for purchases made during this event. Pratt Fine Arts Center is a registered 501(c)3 charitable organization. If your purchase price for an item exceeds its fair market value as stated in the catalog, the overage may be deductible as a charitable contribution. Please consult with your financial and tax advisor for details. Art and experience purchases will be subject to a standard 10% processing fee which will be added to your purchases upon check-out. These fees allow us to provide you with quality auctioneer services, accurate data entry staff, and professional cashiers.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Pratt Fine Arts Center reserves the right to add or withdraw items to or from the auction without notice. Every attempt has been made to describe and catalog all items accurately, but all items are offered “as is, where is.” The values listed are estimates of fair market value only. Items have not been appraised. Each person attending the auction assumes all risks and hazards related to the auction and items obtained at the auction. Each attendee agrees to hold harmless from any liability arising there from Pratt Fine Arts Center, its elected and appointed officials, members, and employees, the auctioneer, the auction company and its agents and employees, the event organizers, sponsors and volunteers connected to the auction.
Items become the property and responsibility of the purchaser upon receipt. All sales are final the night of the auction. Buyer is responsible for removing all artwork and other purchases from the auction premises at the close of the event.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Pratt Fine Arts Center is proud to serve as a lasting tribute to Edwin T. Pratt, a man who devoted his life to improving the quality of life for all people. Mr. Pratt served as Executive Director of the Seattle Urban League from 1961 to 1969. His assassination in that year by unknown assailants was deeply felt by many Seattleites who depended on Pratt’s calm leadership during a period of social upheaval.

Printmaking has been Leslie’s passion since she first discovered it as an undergraduate in art school where her intended major was sculpture. She never looked back and later graduated from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia with a BFA in Printmaking and Book Arts. Leslie primarily works with linocuts and woodcuts. As a mother of a profoundly autistic child, she finds tremendous relief in the therapeutic nature of printmaking.

In 2013, as a recipient of the National Science Foundation’s Antarctic Artist and Writers program, April Surgent conducted eight weeks of fieldwork in the Antarctic. Based at Palmer Station, located on Anvers Island along the Western Antarctic Peninsula at 64°46’ S, 64°03’ W, this location is one of the fastest warming regions in the world. April used resource materials gathered during her fieldwork in her latest series of glass engravings that depict the Antarctic. These engravings, inspired by the photographs of the Antarctic, debuted at Traver gallery in November 2014 and continue to influence her work today.

Christine Lee uses layers of colorful translucent ink to give her work depth, complexity and richness. The results are often otherworldly, fragmented landscapes on paper. Though Lee's background is in Industrial and Environmental Design, she began her life as an artist nearly seven years ago after becoming a mother. History has always fascinated Chris Crites. The majority of the images from which his paintings are based come from books and Washington State archives of the 1890s through 1950s. A book of crime photographs from the 1940s particularly captured Chris's attention. For him the characters and crime scenes were forbidden glimpses into the history of human interaction. The most intriguing of these images were the mug shots, portraits of people who had just been caught. Though often the real story has been lost, Chris tries to bring new life to these practically discarded portraits of personal and criminal history. Intrigued by the texture, Chris began painting on paper bags with a limited color palette in the late 1990s and has continued this ongoing color experiment ever since.

Angie Dixon’s distinctive style is a blend of traditional Asian brush and ink painting (Sumi) with her love of the Pacific Northwest. A BFA from the University of Washington, graduate studies at Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou, China, commercial fishing in Alaska, mountain climbing, and a fascination for cave paintings all contribute to her unique blend of mystic expression. Her recent collaboration with Richard La Londe adds sculptural glass to her repertoire. Dixon’s solo exhibitions include galleries in Juneau, AK, Tokyo, Japan, Sarasota, FL, and Seattle, WA. She illustrated the 1986 REI calendar with her sumi nature paintings and her work is part of the corporate collections of American Airlines, McCaw Cellular, and the University of Alaska.

Nan Wonderly works out of her Ballard studio using recycled tin on wood. Her choice of medium grew out of travels through South African townships, Vietnamese markets and the Cuban countryside, where resilience and shortage reveal the creativity that surfaces under any conditions. The tin used in Daydreaming at the Old Mill comes from household items; a picnic basket, tea containers, a vaporizer. In a collage of imagery from the 1950-1980s, it evokes a halcyon stillness just out of reach. With a degree in Linguistics from Pomona College and a passport, Nan Wonderly has been exploring foreign cultures since youth. Earlier this year she completed a six week residency in Italy, which culminated with a solo exhibition, studio tour and artist’s talk. Her work can currently be seen at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art.

Deborah Paul is a self-taught tin artist living in Seattle’s Fremont neighborhood. She has been working with recycled materials since 2007 when she was a finalist in the Red Bull Art of Can in Chicago, Illinois. Robert Radcliffe began working with metal at Pratt in 2010 and has been unable to stop. He is captivated by the tactile qualities of hot metal as it moves, particularly during hand forging. Bronze moves a bit more easily than steel but is unforgiving when overheated. Fourteen Upset Corners is named for the process used to forge the corners and angles, pushing metal into sharp angles rather than staying with the soft curves that naturally emerge when metal is bent.

Hannah DeBerg is a Seattle-based scientist and artist. She holds a PhD in physics and is fascinated by the physics of biological systems. In the lab, Hannah studies the structure and function of a protein that controls the heart rate. Outside of the lab, she paints and creates fused glass objects inspired by biological design. The Erythrocyte Series represents elements of red blood cells (also called erythrocytes) and their vascular environment. The smooth, circular design of the plates evokes the cyclical journey of erythrocytes as they travel through the circulatory system. The central stripe reflects the confined spaces that make up the vascular architecture through which these cells travel on their life-sustaining journey.

As a retired carpenter and contractor, Jed Johnson has worked with wood for most of his life. Now retired, he is exploring the artistic side of the medium through furniture building and woodturning, and by carefully studying wood's unique characteristics. Northern Lights is created from pin oak wood, which has a dramatic open grain that accepts color beautifully. The color and direction of the grain are reminiscent of aurora borealis; thus the name.

She learned a great deal studying with Jef Gunn and Larry Calkins at Pratt Fine Arts Center, and began teaching at Pratt using wax as an element in sculptural collage with Rickie Wolfe. Encaustic has been her focus for the last 12 years. It is the one medium that affords all the other materials she has worked in to overlap and inform one another. Stephanie has shown her work in Seattle, Minneapolis, New York, and Atlanta. Her work is in several corporate collections. In 2014, she was a panelist for the Inside Art program at Town Hall, and her collaborative work with RobRoy Chalmers was featured on the cover of Artvoices Magazine in fall 2014 with an accompanying article.

Paul Wunderlich was born in 1927 in Berlin and studied in Germany at Landeskunstchule in Hamburg during the late forties and early fifties. Juan Alonso-Rodriguez arrived in the United States from his native Cuba in 1966, one month before his tenth birthday, leaving behind his immediate family. He is a self-taught artist whose transition from music to visual arts coincided with his move to Seattle in 1982. His work has been exhibited throughout the US, Canada, and Latin America and is included in many permanent collections including the Tacoma Art Museum, Portland Art Museum, Museum of Northwest Art, and Microsoft. In the Limitations Project, certain embedded constraints of the natural world are communicated through technological and computational processes. The visualizations generated by custom software, and inspired by organic systems, are returned back to the material from which they originated. In this case, a modified branching algorithm is rendered in wood through CNC machining. The routed design is then filled with black powder and ignited, thereby exploiting a secondary limitation of the material. Peter Rand is an artist working with video, installation, interactive media, sculpture, socially engaged art, and performance. His work focuses on a variety of topics ranging from identity, urban spaces, technocentrism, synesthesia, and the absurd. He holds an MFA in Media Art from UCLA, and has been a contributing artist for public works in Dallas, Rome, and the City of Santa Monica.

German-American artist Richard Lindler painted figure subjects, often of an erotic or enigmatic character. Born in Hamburg in 1901, he grew up in Nuremberg where he studied the piano at the Conservatory, then enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He fled Eurpoe in 1941 to the US where he became very successful as an illustrator for magazines such as Vogue, Fortune and Harper’s Bazaar. Lindler began to paint seriously in the early 1950s. His first solo exhibition was held in 1954 at the Betty Parsons Gallery in New York. His early images were inspired by memories of Germany, including the tradition of toy-manufacturing in Nuremberg, the theatre, and the German Expressionist cinema. Beginning in the 1960s, he drew many of his themes from the vulgar, garish, and fetishistic aspects of New York life. Lindler painted full time from 1965 until his death in New York in 1978.

Julia Heineccius is a currently a visiting faculty member at Oregon College of Art and Craft in Portland, and has been an instructor in the jewelry studio at Pratt since graduating with an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2012. A member of Seattle's SOIL Gallery, you can see more of her work at SOIL in September 2015 as part of a show asking artists to reshape the gallery environment into a hybrid community space. These earrings were made using a technique that shapes molten metal by smashing it directly into a carved mold. The resulting unique cast sterling silver pieces are then delicately soldered to rings to create movement, selectively oxidized grey, and set with a yellow diamond at the base for some rock’n’roll twinkle.

Sigal Druckman creates glass jewelry woven with gold and silver wire. Her unique and untraditional glass beads take the shape of a nets and gears with multiple colors and effects. Sigal’s jewelry evolved when, while flameworking, she was inspired to create woven and knitted effects in glass. To further enhance the woven appearance, she began integrating gold-filled and silver wire. In each piece, she works to create harmony between the metal and the glass materials.

Jessica Landau was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi, raised mostly in rural South Carolina, and earned her BFA at Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia. Landau lived in Hawaii from 2003 to 2014, during which time she studied and worked at Pilchuck Glass School, Penland School of Crafts, the Netherland’s Glass Corner and Studio 19 in Great Britain. She assisted with the glassblowing program at Punahou School in Honolulu, Hawaii from 2008 to 2012, when she began dividing her time between Hawaii and Seattle. Landau currently works as a Teaching Artist with Hilltop Artists-in-Residence program in Tacoma, where juvenile delinquents are mandated by the court to use glassblowing as a community service project. Landau is on the faculty at the Schack Art Center in Everett, Pratt Fine Arts Center in Seattle, and at UrbanGlass in Brooklyn. Landau is currently a full time member of the glassblowing team at Chihuly Studio in Seattle.

In jewelry, she’s drawn to the natural world, creating pieces that are inspired by the pattern of river rocks on a beach, or the stamens of a flower bud, or the ripple of the wheat fields in the Palouse. Her rustic pieces are all held with simple kinetic connections that allow for movement, providing ever-changing compositions that shift with the wearer and encourage play. Shannon Weber is a working artist and instructor of mixed media sculpture from Oregon. Morgan Madison is a Pacific Northwestbased artist. He attended Lewis and Clark College in Portland, OR where he received a BA in Studio Art. Andrew Horch is an engineer during the week and a rabid glassblower on the weekends. He is currently exploring some of the more unusual properties of reactive colors in blown glass. These are colors that, when combined chemical interactions, create new colors or textures. For example, some colors separate when overlapped, thus creating textures. Others create halos. Focusing exclusively on reactive colors, Andrew has been working in Pratt’s hot shop for the last few years. Blue Swirl Vase is made by layering reactive colors on top of each other and then raking the glass to form patterns. In this piece, subtle color halos can be seen at the boundaries between the different colors. They give the piece more depth than would occur if standard, non-reactive colors were used.

Delores Taylor works in pâte de verre, a kiln cast glass process that involves painting with glass frits and powders. She earned a BA in Business and worked in the transportation industry, before leaving to to run a full time business in art. She studied and was a technical assistant to Etsuko Nishi at Pilchuck Glass School. At the Corning Museum of Glass, she studied under Kimiake and Shinichi Higuchi. Nihar Desai is a glass artist born in Bombay, India but currently residing and working in Seattle. Nihar started exploring the glass medium as a hobby in late 2010. It has since then evolved into a passion, which he hopes to turn in to a full time profession in the future. He has taught multiple classes, as well as assisted glass artists such as John Hogan and Eric Anderson. Nihar’s work is largely inspired by these artists and the things he sees around him. After earning her BFA in sculpture from Ohio University, glass quickly became the driving force in Karen Willenbrink-Johnsen’s life. She moved to Washington State in 1987 and soon afterward she began working as an assistant to the legendary glass artist William Morris. Ryan Blythe studied industrial design and glass at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), where he embarked on his glassblowing career under Michael Taylor’s instruction. After leaving RIT in 1994, Ryan attended Pilchuck Glass School and studied under Czech glass master, Petyr Novotony and later Maestro Dino Rosin. He has worked under the direction of numerous artists, including Leon Applebaum, Mitchell Gaudet, Scott Benefield, Richard Royal, Dale Chihuly, Lino Tagliapietra and more. Dan worked as a studio assistant, flameworking instructor, and independent artist until 2007. Since then, he has been running the glassblowing department for an architectural lighting firm. He also continues to create glass pieces in his personal studio. As an avid outdoorsman, Dan is often inspired by nature’s patterns and shapes. With its endless potential for color, luminosity, and variety of form, flameworked glass is a fantastic medium to convey the beauty and intricacies of nature.

il is a Seattle-based artist working in a variety of materials and forms. This peice was made by slumping a casted, molded form bubble wrap. By trapping this form in a suspended state that does not allow for popping, the work deprives us of our ability to satisfy the urge we all have with bubble wrap. It also alters our perspective on what can be seen as art by transforming a product that is primarily used in glass art to protect it. In an age of immediacy, this piece acts as a reminder to slow down, be patient, and look at our surroundings and materials in new and different ways. il has recently exhibited at Center on Contemporary Art (CoCA), Leary Gallery, David Smith Gallery, Artprize and Artist Trust. Carolina Andersson is a Seattle-based jewelry artist. She studied metalworking/ jewelry-making in Milan, Italy and in Seattle, WA. These pieces are inspired by dogwood flowers in the spring, the delicately textured petals and gold decorations are diffusion bonded to the silver with a technique known as Keumboo, which involves first depleting the surface of sterling silver to bring up a thin layer of fine silver to make the gold adhere. Carolina applies a dark patina to create a more dramatic piece. All pieces are entirely handmade and finished by hand. Carolina currently shows and sells her work at Velvet da Vinci in San Francisco, Flying Shuttle in Seattle and other galleries in the area.

Leslie Thiel has been a Pratt contributing artist over 10 years. Typically choosing to work in glass, Thiel has recently been working in metals, believing that by exploring new mediums she can better articulate her vision. This piece was inspired by a trip to the southern part of the United States. Southern Beauty is about finding the jewel in hard times. Hard work is recognized and appreciated even if not spoken. Southern Beauty is felted from wool with a bezeled cubic zirconia incorporated into the felting process. Cut copper makes up the base of the structure. It is all strung on nylon coated stainless steel cable and finished with sterling silver findings. Within this boldly colored flock of sparrows, Cavalieri illustrates elements from the past, present and future. Cavalieri has been exhibiting painted, air brushed and silk-screened stained glass since 1997. He is a New Yorker, currently based in the East Village of Manhattan. This fireplace tool set is made from Lisa’s Continuing Blacksmithing class demonstration on the pineapple twist/diamond dogbone form. The class examples were then forged into functional fireplace tools in her studio, Firelight Forge. The traditional form of the handle, paired with the more modern design of the base brings the classic design into a contemporary setting, something Geertsen very much enjoys incorporating in her work. She owns and operates Firelight Forge located in the Equinox Studios building in Georgetown. Eva Isaksen was born and raised in Bodø, Norway and has lived and worked in Seattle since 1986. Combining collage, printmaking and painting techniques, she creates complex multi-layered compositions to investigate nuances of nature. Material and environmental dialogue within her vision as organic forms, seasons, cycles, growth, and regeneration transforms into order, repetition, and rhythm. Martin Blank’s work is about carving space, creating tension between sculptural forms that evoke compelling landscapes that are revealed by the juxtaposition of sculptural elements. Blank grew up in the Boston area and earned a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. He began his professional career working with Dale Chihuly before opening his own studio in Seattle. Blank’s work is part of public and private collections throughout the world including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Corning Museum of Glass, Millennium Museum Beijing, Tacoma’s Museum of Glass, and many more. Anna Skibska studied at the Academy of Art in Wroclaw, Poland in the Department of Painting, earning her degree 1984. Mission Ripe represents two different but connected bodies of work for Bryan. His artwork is in the collections of King County, City of Seattle, and Microsoft and he has shown nationally and locally. Ali VandeGrift and Brennan Kasperzak met at Penland School of Crafts in 2008. They kept in touch after leaving Penland as both of their individual practices grew. A few years later Brennan proposed making Ali’s beads on a grand scale. They have been collaborating on the large-scale work since spring of 2013. This dialogue of scale and translation of technique from flamework to the hot shop has opened a world of possibilities by joining their different skill sets in the creation of new and innovative works of art.

David’s work demonstrates a personal vocabulary within the framework of the narrative through the parallel and stylized world he imagines. The work is a metaphorical reflection of himself and the world as he interprets it and conveyed as a visual riddle. Thomas Thelen began making paddles after retiring 15 years ago as a professor of biology in Washington State and moving to the Big Island of Hawaii. Throughout his life he paddled—as far north as the Arctic Circle and as far south as Bora Bora. Prior to making paddles Thomas expressed his artistic side by painting and sculpturing but eventually focused on paddles to demonstrate the beauty of wood. He used no stains and only relied on the wood alone to showcase its natural splendor. Each paddle is unique. He employed a variety of woods (including Hawaiian woods such as koa, milo, mango and monkeypod) and a large variety of styles.

Carrie Grula grew up outside of Philadelphia and started blowing glass at Bucks County Community College. She continued her glass education at Rochester Institute of Technology and graduated with a BFA in glass from Alfred University in 2007. Since college, Carrie has relocated to Seattle where she continues to work with glass.

Each of Carrie’s large glass cylinders are hand blown in Pratt’s hot shop. These two-tone vessels start off with blowing a glass cup in the desired cylinder color. Once made, the cup is then temporarily held in a hot kiln. Carrie then starts a secondary white bubble which she will blow into the hot colored cup. This combined mass is then shaped into the desired form. When the cylinder is cooled a resist is applied to the outer surface of the vessel and the pattern is carefully cut out by hand. Parts of the resist are removed and the exposed surface is then sandblasted through the colored layer to the white layer underneath. The remaining resist is then peeled away exposing the two-toned pattern that flows continuously around the surface of the piece. Dale Chihuly’s Basket series began as a simple exploration of form rather than surface. Inspired by the effects that time had upon a collection of woven baskets, making them appear somewhat misshapen and rumpled, he decided to allow natural forces rather than traditional tools to shape the forms. Chihuly began composing sets of multiple elements, progressively drawing contemplation inward within the form. Art historian Linda Norden remarks, “If one looked into these groupings of Baskets rather than at them, new worlds opened up and one could lose oneself to the seduction of forms within forms within forms.”

The Jasmine Basket evokes the continued grace and timeless elegance of Chihuly’s Basket series. Two golden yellow vessels, accented with distinctive contrasting lip and body wraps, compose this 2010 Studio Edition. The smaller element is endearingly cocooned within the environment of its larger counterpart, together conveying an air of gracious unity. Hand blown and signed by the artist, the pair together measure approximately eight inches across. Included are a specially designed Plexiglas vitrine and a companion book, Chihuly Baskets. Georgia Gerber grew up in rural Pennsylvania tending to farm animals and riding horses. She studied art and bronze casting at Bucknell University before moving to Seattle to attend University of Washington’s MFA program. Gerber’s first post-graduate casting was at Pratt, she spent the next 32 years working from her private studio/foundry/gallery on Whidbey Island. Georgia Gerber has over 70 public installations throughout the country, including Rachel the Pig at Pike Place Market and Cows, Frogs, and Turtles at University Village. The stylized grace of Deer with Wren is influenced by primitive animal artwork and guided by lessons of a long career exploring the limits of blending nature with sculptural form. The addition of the wren was inspired by birds that commonly perch on the backs of horses and cows. Gerber likes the feeling that comes from combining different species. Sometimes it is comical, sometimes tranquil, but always a focal point. In this case, she thinks of the wren emotionally as a harbinger of spring, and artistically as a counterpoint to the flowing lines of the deer – with its upright tail feathers echoing the shapes of the deer’s ears. www.georgiagerber.com

Pushing glass beyond the anatomy of the vessel, Ethan Stern’s work is an ongoing exploration of abstraction, color, texture, and light. Drawn to a richer, more luminous glass surface, Ethan explores texture by carving and engraving the surface of his work. Glass artist Julie Conway is the owner and designer of Illuminata Art Glass Design, a studio that creates functional and sculptural glass art works. Her first molten blob of glass was formed in 1997; she has never looked back. Currently Mark Rudis works in the mediums of metal sculpture and printmaking. He attended the University of Washington and Cornish College of the Arts where he earned his BFA. Working for numerous established artists such as Ginny Ruffner, Bertil Vallien, Ed Kienholtz and Marvin Oliver, Rudis is experienced in a multitude of artistic disciplines. He presently teaches at Pratt Fine Arts Center and works at the Museum of Glass in Tacoma.

A big part of Miriam Di Fiore’s childhood passed among trees in a town near the Atlantic Ocean in Argentina. The forest has a deep and symbolic meaning for her. Her work is not so much an interpretation of wooded landscapes, but rather a simple, respectful translation in glass of a little part of her wonderful world where she has spent some time in the company of trees. She feels that glass is an emotional material, without borders, that can change with the source of the light or the point of view. The steel display stands were hand-forged by Lisa Geertsen.

Felicia Wartnik and Micki Lippe collaborated on this piece for an exhibition entitled 3x2 Redux. Felicia’s method of stamping molten glass was combined with Micki’s metalsmithing techniques to create a custom stamp. After several custom-stamped glass trials, Micki set the most successful one in metal and crafted an additional wire leaf. Felicia has worked in flameworked glass for many years and currently teaches at Pratt. Micki has been making fine art jewelry for many years and also teaches at Pratt.

Naoko Morisawa’s artwork is made by hand of thousands of very small slices of oil-dyed wood-chips on board. The variety of wood grain is very beautiful and the pattern is never the same. When seen from a distance, her objects look like paintings but the details of the work and mosaic technique slowly emerge as the viewer comes closer. Look closely and see the vibrancy and movements of the wood patterns. By using wood mosaic, Morisawa shows the life and energy of her medium.

Lee Campbell’s art work strives to seduce the observer to interact with it, to have a tactile connection to the art. On arriving in Seattle, Lee fulfilled a lifelong passion to work with glass. He studied glassblowing and glass casting at Pratt Fine Arts Center. His continued studies have enabled him to become a teaching assistant for casting classes at Pratt. Lee’s enthusiasm for casting bronze has led to the combining of these materials in his work. Lee teaches the Advanced Bronze Casting classes at Pratt. Lee has been a teaching assistant at Pilchuck Glass School during the summers of 2009 and 2013. Lee continues to add to his set of skills by taking classes at Pratt Fine Arts Center, Pilchuck Glass School, and Penland School of Craft. Lee Campbell’s work has been shown nationally.

Demetra's work is inspired by the storytelling tradition of woven tapestry; she sees herself as weaving with glass to connect the viewer with the story of the natural world. Demetra has received international recognition for her woven glass nest and flora sculptures, and is the 2014 NICHE Award winner for Best in Flameworked Glass. She exhibits her work internationally, including shows curated by the Oakland Museum of California, SF Museum of Craft+Design, National Liberty Museum, and was recently juried into Hungary's prestigious Triennial of the Silicate Arts. She teaches nationally, and maintains a private studio in San Francisco where she creates her work. She also serves as Co-President of Glass Alliance of Northern California, and actively volunteers to give back to the glass art community.

This immersive, three-day encaustic workshop taught by artist Colleen Monette takes place in Waitsburg, WA, about 20 miles northeast of Walla Walla, over the weekend of September 11 – 13, 2015. The class is limited to 12 people total, so you and your guest will enjoy personalized attention and lots of time for artistic exploration.

On day one, Friday, you will be introduced to the basics of painting with pigmented wax, including fusing, incising, and layering. You will delve into the myriad of ways to manipulate the wax through collage, stenciling, and embedding, as well as learning photo transfers. On days two and three, you will continue to create, with additional demos/techniques, and will also experiment with 3-dimensional sculpture, building forms on Saturday, and waxing them on Sunday. Cappy Thompson and Dick Weiss are good friends who have been working as glass artists for 40 years. Every December for the last six years, Cappy and Dick have worked together at Pottery Northwest. Sometimes they paint on forms of their own making. Sometimes they decorate forms made by the resident artists. Sitting side-by-side, they paint and pass the objects back and forth. Together they decide when the piece is complete. Collaborating has been one of the great pleasures of their creative lives.
