gp gALATA PORT Galata Port is the main tourist port in Istanbul, but the official check-in center is quite small and almost indiscernible amoung all the large storage buildings. Our task as a class was to create a port that represented the city as well as held a strong sea side presence. The big twist in the class was, that we were to only have one design.Ten architecture students had to come together and design one port for Istanbul. Our starting point was to travel to Istanbul and study the city firsthand. After exploring the city, we found that there was a strong walking presense that created a sense of filtration towards the water. The buildings would open up to allow for small roadways to cut between them. We wanted to keep this idea of filtration towards the water, while also giving back as much public space as we possibly could. The port design is composed of two major layers; the actual building spaces that allow for pedestrian passage to the water and the rooftop public space that is accessible to all. (The work that follows was created by all the students in the Galata Port studio. We worked as though we were in one firm, all collaborating on one project, with everyone’s work being displayed together.)

PEACHTREE SCHOOL FOR THE ARTS The building site is located on the corners of North Ave and Peachtree St and North Ave and Juniper St. The program is a high school for the arts; it has an emphasis on studio and creative spaces. The idea behind this project is safety; the main focus is creating a space that students feel free and safe to roam as they please. There is a central courtyard that is meant to be the heart of the design, to which many programmatic elements are connected. The courtyard is surrounded by the protective arms of the building. The building program is set up where the public spaces are easily accessible by the parking lot, the semi-public spaces, which are also the higher traffic spaces are along Peachtree St; the highest trafficked road. The private spaces share a common circluation path with the urban context but the private spaces are lifted approximately 60ft above ground level, creating a distinct separation. As added safety there is an outer second skin that wraps around the building. This skin is more than just a safety blanket for the whole school, it is also a sound barrier, sun shade, it is made of a material called Smartwrap, which consists of a thin film of photovoltaics and a thin screen. The Smartwrap wall adsorbs solar rays and turns it into energy to then power the digital screen that can project a multitude of images on it.

bh Atlanta Bath house The building site is located on the corner of Lucky Street and Forsyth Street in Atlanta. The program consists of three different bathhouses from around the world; Finnish Sauna, Japanese Onsen and Turkish Hammam. The pregression through the building is set up as a cleansing journey, where you begin at the sauna, then travel to the onsen and end at the hammam. The circulation pathways are designed to be gathering areas as well, and as people travel though the building they are taken from indoors to outdoors, then back indoors. The idea behind this is emphasizing one’s sense of feeling. Bathhouses are an experience of the body, so taking the body through diverse atmosperes is part of the experience. The program of the building also includes retail on the first floor and a dance space on the second floor.

hm HOTEL MONROE Hotel Monroe is located on the corner of Monroe St and E Park Ave in Tallahassee, FL.The idea was to design a luxury hotel and restaurant, that is contemporary yet respects the context of the surrounding city. Tallahassee is a mix of concrete and brick, the exterior of the Hotel Monroe is created with that in mind. The material of the structure is concrete, and skin is representative of a block-like stacking structure. The idea behind the skin, was to give an abstract representation on the construction process. The lower portion of the building has less voids, to represent the heaviness of the structure and as the viewers eye travels upward they find the balance has switched. The upper portion of the skin is more void than solid, allowing the structure to become visually lighter.

pr Prison Rehabilitation Center A Philadelphia green design competition where participants were instructed to design a workshop, living quarters, retail space and offices for rehabilitated prisoners. One major goal of competition was to have the designers incorporate green strategies into the design. The rehabilitation workshop also had to center around green design. The green strategies incorporated into this design are: Photovoltaic panels, rainwater cistern, daylighting, permeable parking and reflective roofing.

ZERO-POINT Zero-Point was an art collaboration with artist Maurice Clifford, for the Center for Chemical Evolution. Myself and three other classmates, along with artist Maurice Clifford, designed a sculpture around the idea of folding proteins and the helical shape of DNA. The sculpture starts with square panels that are etched with organic shapes meant to represent folding proteins, then a helical shape is cut out of the panels; this shape is meant to represent DNA. Looking through the helical structure towards its “zero-point reveals the natural order that exists within a seemingly complex layered system.
