We strive to collect and preserve neon, electric, and kinetic art; believing that neon illumination brings together art, technology, and science in a one-of-a-kind way.

the brief: The Smithsonian Institute has launched an initiative to extend its network to include a grouping of alternative and novelty museums. To do so, it has put out a request for proposals expressing what each museum might do if chosen.

the details: Blue and green will not be used due to the way competitors utilize them in a strong way. Using a consistent sans serif typeface has been identified as the most effective route.

building: The basis for many historical neon signs was a simple sans serif typeface or hand-done script with clear letterforms.

Process

Although, while being made, neon signs are commonly thought of as shapes, not letters or words. Focusing on the basic forms that create letters became an important step in the ideation process.
